How To Progress With The Weaknesses & Limitations You Truly Have
When I’m interviewed on other people’s shows about drive, often the first topic they’ll bring up is my claim that everyone has drive. Further, that everyone has just as much drive in them as anyone else. When I explain it, everyone agrees and accepts this new revelation. However, in this space of self-improvement, I bristle at the concept of “no fear” and “no limits” and “no excuses.” This is the perception I embraced as a kid and took into my life. It was great as a pro cyclist where you push yourself past your limits. But overall in life, to disregard the truth of our weaknesses and limitations is foolish. I know. I have been a fool so many times. In my recent show with Harvard and MIT professor Jeff Karp, his story starts with tremendous difficulties as a kid in school. They wanted to hold him back in 2nd grade. His grades were terrible. He was labeled a troublemaker. He was embarrassed by teachers in front of his class. What I appreciate is he didn’t just justify all his issues. He accepted them and said, “Yes, I really have trouble with my attention and how my brain does and doesn’t work.” And he didn’t justify it with his ultimate success as an Ivy League professor. He just took it all scientifically and spiritually and said, “Hey, here are some tools I figured out that can help you, like they helped me.” We do have personal weaknesses. We do have limits. We do have things we will always struggle with, and they do matter. Drive with me a moment and let’s talk about how we can progress and succeed anyway. With growth, grit, and grace. Two Small Shifts To Make Getting Off The Coach & Doing Something So Much Easier
Think about all the “shoulds” in your life. All the things that come to mind that you should do, and that feeling of, “ugh”. And the feeling of, “I know I should, but…” and there is a list of things to do you don’t even have conceptualized. It just feels like a lot. And it can keep us stuck there. Idling in park and not driving…anywhere. Driven, but stuck. This happened to me the other day and I tried something that worked. Then low and behold the very next day the concept was scientifically defined for me by Harvard and MIT professor Jeff Karp as we talked about the message in his new book, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature's Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action. The concept is called “lowering activation.” Drive with me a moment and I’ll unpack it so you can use it too. 5 Keys To Hack The Mind Game Of Your Life
Take every self-help resource. Every therapy session. Every spiritual resource. From them all we are striving to program, or reprogram, our brains. In order to get us driving further and faster with less effort. Less anxiety. Less complexity. Less limits. Saying life is a mind game can be incredibly depressing, or empowering. My goal in this short message is to empower you. And me. I need this reminder every day. We all live in our own, personal matrix. We really do. Understanding, embracing, and accepting this can be life altering. My inspiration is Harvard and MIT professor Jeff Karp who I just had on the show. His new book, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature's Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action, is a great showcase in how life is a mind game and how we can intentionally get ourselves LIT for success. Bioinsperationalist Jeff Karp | How To Harness Nature Through Science To Free Your Mind & Take Action
Most of us think we are driving through our lives with automatic shifting, like almost all cars nowadays. But in truth, our life is a stick shift and we must manually shift gears. And most of us habitually live in first to third gear. We go about living in our minds with a lot of limitations, blind spots, and ignorance. So I bring you, Jeff Karp. Jeff started life with some big struggles. Amidst some undiagnosed issues, he did so poorly in school they wanted to hold him back in second grade. Teachers literally put blinders on him and embarrassed him in front of class for not paying attention. He was labeled a troublemaker. But at age eight a teacher asked him about how he was thinking, and it opened up such a new world for Jeff that he cites it as his first spiritual experience. He went on to adjust how he learned and today is a member of the National Academy of Inventors. He is a Professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT and a Distinguished Chair at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Karp has dedicated his research laboratory to bioinspired medical problem solving, which he explains at the top of the show as studying phenomena in nature and replicating them through science. His lab’s technologies include a nasal spray to neutralize pathogens, a tissue glue that can seal holes inside a beating heart, targeted therapy for osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, needles that automatically stop when they reach their target, and more. His new book however is focused on you and your brain and the vast, untapped potential he says you can ignite with some tools. And you can upshift in your life. Drive further and faster with less effort. The book is called LIT, which stands for Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature’s Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action. Some would call it brain hacks but it’s not. It’s just brain ability we generally are unaware of. So join me in a conversation to learn more about how you can utilize some tools to get your brain…LIT. You can learn more at Dr. Karp's website here: www.jeffkarp.com. A Guide To The Most Beneficial Meats
Our bodies drive everything we do, so in an effort to get them in the best shape possible, in this episode we are talking about meat. Eating meat or not is one issue, but if you choose to, are they all equal? Absolutely not. Again, we’re talking about food, the items we ingest every day that are intended to build, repair, heal, and help us flourish. So if the next meal has meat, does it contain the natural ingredients it was intended to? Ingredients that give us life? Or is it made up of synthetic hormones, antibiotics, waste products, and an overall soup of refuse and pharmaceuticals? It matters, hugely. The type of meat to a degree, but moreso, the lifestyle of the animal it came from. Medical doctor and Function Medicine expert Randy James and I walk through meat to help you understand what will best support your drive. 2 Ways To Practice Being Present & How It Is Actually Of Value To You
I met with a group of guys this morning to talk about being present. It's actually a group of Colorado guys from Denver and Colorado Springs who adventure together. We mountain bike, run, hike, raft, paddle board, camp, ski and basically revel in the outdoors. But we also journey to go deep. The guy who founded the group talks about Outer Terrain and Inner Terrain. The concept of "being present" is in vogue today, but I find two problems present - One, it doesn't sell well, being present doesn't sound valuable and fun at face value, and two, most people think it just means not daydreaming or being on your phone and paying attention to the environment around you. So what is valuable about being present and is it more than just paying attention to your surroundings? Drive with me a moment... Why It Is So Hard To Be Well & How To Reframe Your Mind To Live Healthier
We are generally driven to do the right thing in our lives. We practice personal hygiene, we get the kids off to school, we work and pay the bills, we pay our taxes and we attend social functions and are generally nice and serving to people. But why is it so hard to do the right things for our health and wellness? I just had a long conversation with Dr Tom O’Bryan in the previous episode where he basically showcased that today’s chronic illness and disease is primarily of our own doing. Primarily, not all. I’d rather hear this news than hear it’s all being done to me. If my ill health is mostly my own doing, then I have control over getting healthier, which is great! But the question I pose today is, why is it so hard? Why does our drive seem so hard when it comes to being well? Let me get the cards on the table for you to try and make it more understandable and easier to grasp, and therefore, change. Dr. Tom O’Bryan | 7 Lifestyle Adjustments To Reduce Your Chance Of Disease By 95%
7 Lifestyle Adjustments To Reduce Your Chance Of Disease By 95%. That seems an almost preposterous claim. I’ve studied health and wellness for three decades and been heavily involved in Functional Medicine for 15 years. And the message in this show speaks truth. My guest is Dr. Tom O’Bryan, a world-renowned Functional Medicine educator I’ve known of for years and finally connected with. He is the author of You Can Fix Your Brain and The Autoimmune Fix and known for his research on gluten. He now has a profound, 7-part docuseries for you, called the Inflammation Equation, where he unveils the underlying mechanisms in the development of 14 of the top 15 causes of death in our world today. You’ll learn from Tom and the world’s top medical experts about the simple steps you can take to stop dis-ease from becoming disease. This conversation is a candid overview of just what inflammation is. Think of an injury you incur and you have swelling. That's the body doing what it's supposed to do. Yet today with the massive and growing amount of toxins in our environment and on the end of our fork, our body is always in a mild to acute state of inflammation and it will go on till it grows, encounters a weak spot in your system, and finally manifests as a disease. Our culture is fighting valiantly to find cures for diseases while the world's best informed realize we are all feeding the disease. And you can't cure a problem that we are actively feeding. Listen in to this show to find real answers and hope for your best chances to ward off the disease culture that is being accepted as the norm. It doesn't need to be your norm. Go to inflammationequation.com for the docuseries. And next up, Tom O'Bryan and a deep dive into inflammation and how to mitigate it in your body. The Most Nutrient Dense & Beneficial Veggies You Can Eat
Your body is the vehicle for all your drive, so we seek to strengthen it for you in this episode. We live in a culture where many people don’t eat many vegetables, and if they do, they gravitate towards the least beneficial. Food is your best medicine, so here is your guide to getting the most out of your veggies. And the goal? Make veggies half or more of every meal. Not the side. Meat and grains and other are your side. But to vegetables, not all are created equal. In a recent episode, Dr James quipped about his kids going for the most sugar-full veggies like carrots and snap peas and it sparked a listener to ask which veggies were in fact, “better”. We intended to discuss the “better” foods in five categories but found just getting through veggies was a complete episode. To give you some Cliff’s Notes, his “top tier” picks for the most nutrient dense veggies were broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, spinach, cabbage (especially purple) and kale. Tier two? Peas, corn, carrots and okra. Why? You’ll serve yourself well to understand, so in this episode Dr Randy James and I break it down. Quick call out to my new friend, Kathy. She’s been a listener for years, loves these health focused shows I do with Dr James, and this week surprised me by showing up at his practice, True Life Medicine, here in Colorado. She flew in to become a patient.. I came out to see someone in the foyer and she recognized my voice, not realizing my studio is in his office building. We had a great visit. You can check out what Randy can offer you at truelifemedicine.com. Got any questions? Hit me up, [email protected]. OK, next up, Randy and I give you the lowdown on the best veggies. Enjoying The Ride vs Achieving The Destination - Which Is More Important?
It will surprise you for me to say, it depends. We all have something we want and the clarity of what we want and why is what makes up our drive. The cultural and high achiever perspective is to but super disciplined, give everything up for the sake of the end goal, delay all gratification for the sake of the prize and never, ever, ever quit! Well, we all know of people who did this and never found any joy. So let's talk about this and break it down so you can apply it to your drive. 6 Steps To Being Authentic When You Are a People Pleaser
We've been talking about belonging and how true belonging is not merely "fitting in." Thanks to Ritu Bhasin, author of We've Got This, for bringing us to the concept. For all of you who are people pleasers...who don't like conflict, the idea of being authentic can feel scary and feel like to be natural we've got to offend people. I just can't embrace this but I'm learning how to better navigate being authentic, while not being confrontational. Walk with me a minute and I think I can bring you some understanding and comfort that will let you be you, while also being more true to yourself and at peace with others. How To Belong To Yourself When You Are A Tool
In my previous episode with Ritu Bhasin, author of We Got This, we dove deep into the concept of belonging and she wisely stated we must first begin by belonging to ourselves. Few of us were ever taught anything about our relationship with ourselves and to many, like me, the very concept is obtuse and awkward. It's taken me a long time to recognize that some people are just...good with themselves. They are comfortable in their own skin. And I want that. I want peace. I'm tired of the anxiety of never measuring up to myself. And you can’t measure up when you think of yourself as merely a tool to get things done. Which many of you do as well. Let’s get the issue on the table so we can course correct. Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! Ritu Bhasin On How To Find True Belonging Vs Merely Fitting In
One of the key drives of our lives is to belong. To truly belong where we are known and accepted and respected, if not loved. We often mistake fitting in for belonging. We perform to fit in at school, at work, at church, or with family. And that’s the rub, we’re performing. We’re not being ourselves. And we don’t find true belonging. My expert on belonging is Ritu Bhasin, who is a global expert on diversity, equity, and inclusion and has worked with hundreds of world-renowned organizations to help guide people to becoming their authentic selves, which as you’re about to hear is step on in belonging. Ritu has been a professional speaker for almost 15 years and has presented to 100,000s+ people globally. Her book is called We’ve Got This: Unlocking The Beauty Of Belonging. We discuss the first step in belonging is belonging to yourself. And this is the hardest step. We talked long on what being authentic really entails, when almost all of us were taught to perform. We discuss the difference between being untrue to yourself and adapting to others out of respect and love. And we cover issues of personal credibility and how those who are marginalized in any way have more barriers to cross on the path to belonging, and how they can advocate for themselves. Connect with Ritu at ritubhasin.com. Next up, we talk about how to achieve one of your greatest drives of all, the drive to authentically, belong. An Exhaustive Review Of The Best Sleep Habits
You are driven by your values and today we discuss the value of feeling good, and we look at sleep. Think about this, everyday we must eat. But we can eat junk food and feel like crap, or we can eat wonderful, healthy food and feel great. It’s the same with sleep. Everyday we sleep, and we can do some things and get horrid, non-rejuvenating sleep, or we can do other things and get great, recharging and refreshing sleep. I’ve learned I can’t always judge my sleep on how I think I slept. Sometimes I’m out like a light, wake in the morning feeling ok, only to crash later in the day. And other times where I feel I tossed and turned some, I wasn’t ready to wake up when I did, but I had good energy for the day. This show is about the tangible habits we can employ to give ourselves a better chance of getting quality sleep. I’m talking with medical doctor, functional medicine expert and my close friend, Randy James. As we unpacked good sleep habits we were a bit surprised to realize just how many integers there are regarding our sleep. From the food we eat prior to sleep, to our mattress, to light and sound and even the topic of our last waking thought. What we thought would be a quick run through of our list turned into a much longer discussion and resulted in even us realizing just how many things can influence our sleep quality Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! Attachment Style Expert Thais Gibson | How To Recognize & Rewire How You Relate To People
I state we are all driven by our desires or our fears. Positively or negatively. In relationships, the same holds true and it’s explained and defined by our attachment styles. As a child you experienced attachment to others a certain way and this was your programming going forth for all relationships. Friends, this is immensely significant. You can quickly find out your attachment style and open a whole new world of understanding and opportunity for your life, from relationships to how you work to how you perceive your spirituality. I sat down for a long talk with Thais Gibson. Thais has become the authority on attachment theory and styles. She has a Ph.D. with nearly a decade of experience running a successful private practice and engaging with over 30,000 clients through individual sessions, workshops, and an educational platform. She created the Gibson Integrated Attachment Theory™, which unites traditional attachment theory, developmental psychology insights, and potent subconscious reprogramming techniques that are woven throughout the course material within The Personal Development School. Thais founded the Personal Development School when her private practice got fully booked with a 2-year waitlist. It quickly expanded to thousands of members and counting in 115 countries. The school has over 38 million views on social media. I encourage you to go to personaldevelopmentschool.com now and take the free Attachment Style quiz. If you want to join the membership and gain access to her courses, use code Kevin25 and get 25% off. You might want to take the quick quiz before you listen to this so you can have a better understanding. Stop & Notice How Your Life Philosophy Is Driving You - For Better Or Worse
We all live with a life philosophy. We have guiding principles, beliefs, and expectations that influence everything we think and do. But most people are unaware of the philosophy they are living under and don’t realize they are being mindlessly guided to destinations, not of their conscious choice. You are most people. I am too, on any given day that we don’t stop and take captive what is going on, and decide and choose what we want to be going on. Why You Don’t Want To Wait For Something To Happen & How To Trigger Your Drive Now
It’s become a perspective in our culture that you are waiting for something to happen, so you can respond and become extraordinary. Our movies often show someone just existing through life, then all the sudden the world is going to end by a giant meteor or a plague and they rally to save themselves and others. Or they fall into a vat of chemicals or get bit by an insect and develop superpowers and a villain emerges. Zero to hero. We love the stories, but they permeate our culture and we start thinking that’s what life is. It isn’t. Most incredibly successful people had no big event that spurred them on. They simply looked around and noticed something they didn’t want, or they got an idea of something they did want, and they just started walking toward it. Drive is not found. It’s already in you and it’s just looking for a reason to get out. Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! You Have As Much Drive As Anyone, Only The Fuel & Destination Is In Question
This is the biggest myth I’m on a mission to dispel, that some people are driven and others are not. It’s a lie. And I want you to tell yourself and everything this good news. When you are on the couch binge watching shows and binge eating chips, it’s not because you have a lack of drive. When your kid wants to do nothing but play video games while your friend’s kid is a star athlete and valedictorian, it’s not because your kid lost the genetic lottery and has no drive. We all have all the drive we need. As much as anyone else. It’s only what is fueling our drive, and what destination we truly want, that’s in question. Following is a short analogy to drive home the point. Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! What Drives Celebrity Realtor Ryan Serhant | 3 Ways To Stand Out From the Crowd & Build Your Following
Ryan Serhant is one of the most successful and well-known real estate brokers in the world. Ryan is known as a star of Bravo’s Emmy-nominated Million Dollar Listing New York, its spin-off show Sell It Like Serhant, and for his appearance in the film While We’re Young alongside Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, and Adam Driver. He founded his own real estate company, SERHANT., that has grown to more than 300 agents and over 100 full-time employees across New York City, Long Island, the Hamptons, and Florida and has amassed over 6 million followers across all social platforms. If you remember the old TV show, Lifestyles of The Rich & Famous, Ryan is the guy that’s gotten famous selling those houses, and living that lifestyle. He’s the guy everyone would point to and say is Mr Driven. Like he got a supernatural dose of drive and everyone else pales in comparison. And that is why I sat down to talk with him. I wanted to uncover what made him tick, and how he’s a mere mortal like the rest of us. So you’ll hear what drove him as a kid, where he went wrong, and why today he wants to become the most well known name in real estate in the world, simply because he wants the challenge and is bored otherwise. The other half of this conversation is about branding. Ryan got to where he is by becoming an expert in branding. He has a new book titled, Brand It Like Serhant: Stand Out From the Crowd, Build Your Following, and Earn More Money. I dug deep into his 3 keys of branding, which are 1) Discover Your Core Identity, 2) Consistency Is Key, with a focus on social media, and 3) Shout It from the Mountaintop, or rather, how to. It’s incredible information that Ryan has proven. He even went so far as to look at my social media and website and give candid, constructive criticism. This is not only a master class in drive, but a master class in branding you won’t want to miss. You’ll also hear at the end of the show, Ryan looking at his watch and being dumbfounded at how long we’d talked, claiming it was the longest conversation he’s ever had with someone and his wife is going to be jealous. I took that as a great compliment. Enjoy. Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! What Drives Authentic Leadership Expert Kristen Hadeed
I’m back with authentic leadership expert Kristen Hadeed to talk about what drives her as she influences other leaders around the world. Kristen is a prolific speaker and personality people in key leadership roles are turning to for advice on how to lead by connecting with your people, whether they are your kids or your employees or coworkers. Kristen’s book is Permission To Screw Up: How I Learned to Lead by Doing (Almost) Everything Wrong. We cover her practices of walking, journaling and why she gets consistent therapy. And Kristen speaks to her journey away from everything having to be bigger and bigger and stepping back to pursue the quality of life, relationships and fun that she values. At the end I encourage her to pursue her idea of maybe gardening, and doing it poorly. And a gift for you, Kristen has a renowned program called the Human Leadership Program. How To Manifest When You Don't Believe In Manifesting
Today the buzzword in self-improvement is manifesting. People seem fairly polarized on the topic, either fully embracing it as magical or fully rejecting it as evil. I’ll admit I’ve struggled with the concept of manifesting for a long time. I believe in a God and I don’t think I’m it. I don’t think you are either. But I feel where there’s smoke there is often fire, and my parents taught me not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. So I’ve been studying this concept of manifesting and found a way I can embrace it, and think many of you will resonate as well. Authentic Leadership w/ Kristen Hadeed | How To Lead & Connect As Your Authentic Self
The fact you are listening to this podcast tells me you are driven to influence others, and influence is leadership. So whether you want to positively influence your kids or friends or coworkers, or you want to lead a company or organization, you need some leadership skills. However, the term of leadership covers a lot of ground and has a lot of baggage that may not be relevant for you. Which is why I’m doing this series on Authentic Leadership and I’ve brought in Kristen Hadeed. Kristen Hadeed has a great story of unintentional leadership that now has her on stage around the world teaching other leaders what she calls, human leadership. Which I’d say is leading while being a good and serving human. Kristen was in college and started cleaning people’s homes to generate some income. She got more requests and ended up hiring people to help and from it and ultimately created a company that cleaned student apartments and dorms, staffed only by students. But she made so, so many mistakes that helped her learn how to really lead people by connecting to and caring about them. Kristen’s book is titled Permission To Screw Up: How I Learned to Lead by Doing (Almost) Everything Wrong. It’s a wonderful book, which is why Simon Sinek wrote the forward. In this show Kristen and I discuss what authentic leadership is and can be. And we get into talking about not only the value of trying and failing, but the necessity if you are doing anything worthwhile. Kristen is a bright light and we resonated so much we intend to do more work together. And a gift for you, Kristen has a renowned program called the Human Leadership Program. A ticket costs $299, but if you use this special link you get in free. Literally free - https://kristenhadeed.myflodesk.com/qjrsjl9vug. Charles Duhigg: How To Drive From Mere Communication To Actual Connection
Here in America we are massively overfed, and often undernourished. Likewise we are in an age of dramatic overcommunication, and under-connection. And here lies the opportunity. This is the superpower. To evolve past mere communication and get to connection. This is where the magic happens. If you can connect, you can influence. And you’re about to learn that you in fact, don’t know how to really connect. Or at least, you can do it better and more consistently. My expert for the series is Charles Duhigg. I got to know Charles intimately on a beach in Florida, nearly a decade ago. He wasn’t there, as I was on a getaway with my wife and I was devouring his book, The Power of Habit. I have it right here, marked up and tattered. Still my favorite resource on habits. So when I got contacted by his agency about having him on the show, and that his focus this time was communication, I said schedule it. Immediately. And…he delivered. You’re about to hear how to do what few people do well, and you can make the change…immediately. And benefit…immediately. CHARLES DUHIGG is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on bestseller lists and has been translated into 40 languages, and Smarter Faster Better, also a bestseller. His newest book, Supercommunicators: How To Unlock The Secret Language of Connection, is available February, 2024. Charles writes for The New Yorker magazine and is a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Business School. He has been a frequent contributor to CNBC, This American Life, NPR, PBS’s NewsHour and Frontline. The bio says you were also, for one terrifying day in 1999, a bike messenger in San Francisco. Transforming Conflict w/ William Ury | How To Engage In & Rise Above Any Conflict
We begin a series on conflict, or more specifically, the possibilities within or around conflict. We seem to be a world more at conflict than ever. What Drives Your Health | How To Keep Choice Pollution From Giving You Anxiety
This is a What Drives Your Health episode and we look at how choice pollution is feeding into your anxiety. This is not what we want fueling our drive. When you are faced with too many choices, you are inclined to do…nothing. Or if you’re like me you just make a rash decision just so you can move on. Taking time to figure out the best decision can cause stress and from this we are generally suffering from decision fatigue. Now think about the reality of life today that always has an infinite amount of choices for anything at any given moment. It produces a culture of anxiety. We’re calling it “choice pollution” and in this episode Dr Randy James of True Life Medicine and I talk about the problem, the solution and the anti anxiety drugs being prescribed for it. Inner Mastery w/ Hitendra Wadhwa | How To Transcend & Respond vs Justify & React
This episode is part 3 in my series on Inner Mastery. We think what drives us is the desire for something...out there. It's having a goal and wanting the goal so much that we're motivated enough to do what it takes to achieve it. This is how we parent. I've done it too. Provide an incentive. "Here is what you'll get...what you can have...if you'll get up and do the work." It can work, but it's a short term solution. Once the prize is achieved you go back to square one. What we want is to be people who are always motivated toward positive results. Again, you are always driven. But your drive is fueled by fear or desire. You can be driving backwards, you can be driven off on time wasting detours. You can be driven to massive wrecks. We all want to be driven to wake up daily and make positive progress toward fulfilling destinations, and regardless of the destination, be enjoying the ride. This comes from inner mastery. Note, don't hear "mastery" as a noun. A destination. Think of it as a verb. More like...inner mastering. Always growing. My expert in part one and two was Hitendra Wadhwa, a professor at Columbia Business School where his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular classes. Hitendra’s new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success. Here I have my brother and frequent co-host, Jared Angaza on to discuss these five keys, as in my long talk with Hitendra we never got past the first key, purpose. Next are wisdom, growth, love, and self-realization. My interest is digging into how we have cultural meanings programmed into us and misperceive all five core energies, and how we can get them flowing to better inform and direct our drive You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. Inner Mastery w/ Hitendra Wadhwa | How To Transform Into Your True Self
In this episode we look at a key myth about drive. That it comes from focusing on an external motivation. You are driven to make more money, secure a certain relationship, attain a position, have an experience, etc…It’s always “out there.” And yet all those things are simply items we focus on to get our inner self, driven. My book is about unlocking the drive inside you, and though I do in fact use external motives as tools, the work happens…inside. So here I kick off a series on Inner Mastery. My expert is Hitendra Wadhwa. Hitendra is a professor at Columbia Business School and Founder of the Mentora Institute. His class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular at Columbia Business School. Hitendra’s mission is to discover, codify and teach the laws of success in life and leadership. His research integrates the latest science of human nature, ancient wisdom, studies of great leaders, and the personal journeys of everyday heroes. Hitendra’s new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success, and is endorsed by Arthur Brooks who we just had on the show for the second time, as well as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, and 8 time Olympian Apolo Ohno. What Drives Your Health | IBS, SIBO & How To Poop More Frequently & Effectively
This is our What Drives Your Health episode, because the physical body of you is the vehicle for everything you drive towards! If it’s compromised, so are all your efforts. Here we’re looking at IBS, SIBO & How To Poop More Frequently & Effectively. I’d say that is not a sexy topic, but being bloated, gassy and constipated is definitely not sexy and we want to help. IBS, irritable bowel syndrome, affects nearly everyone to some degree, even those living a very clean, healthy and active lifestyle. Diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, abdominal aches and pains and general discomfort down there should not be “normal” and there is hope to address it. I’ve had my own bouts with these issues, so I really feel your pain. When you do a search in Google and type in, “How often should you…” the number one search is “wash your hair”, number two is “poop”. You are not alone. In this episode Dr Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and I talk candidly about IBS, SIBO, poop and more. Quick note…hearing all the incredible messages on the What Drives You podcast is powerful. To help it really take root in your life, I invite you to join us in the Drive Tribe online community and join the daily discussions where we go deeper, together, on all the show topics. This community has been a long time coming, and the time is now. We give a primary focus to what is driving us, and what is driving others…to us. We want to influence others with how we feel we can help them. We want to help you drive your influence so you are impacting other people for good. Let’s help each other drive further, faster, and enjoy the ride. Interdependence w/ Kevin Miller | The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action
We are wrapping up our series on Interdependence and how it supports our overall drive far more than our independence. There is a place for both, but our focus on being independent is limiting us. This is my Big Idea, Big Takeaway & Big Action episode where I pull out the key highlights from our series. My expert for the series is Interdependence Expert & International Trauma Facilitator, Thomas Hübl, whose new book is titled, Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma—and Our World. In part three I broadened the discussion with a friend and collaborator of Thomas’, William Ury who is one of the world’s best-known experts on negotiation and co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation. William’s new book is called POSSIBLE: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict, and we have a series with him coming up shortly. Interdependence w/ William Ury | How To Connect With Someone’s Trauma Even If They Are Accusing You
We are continuing our series with part three on Interdependence and this is a candid conversation getting to the heart of understanding each other’s traumas in order to resolve conflict. We began with Interdependence Expert & International Trauma Facilitator, Thomas Hübl, whose new book is titled, Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma—and Our World. Here I continue the discussion with a friend and often collaborator with Thomas, William Ury. I often bring on past guests for this part three segment, but William is actually a future guest. We spent three hours together recently and I discovered he and Thomas were more than well acquainted and had done much together. William Ury is one of the world’s best-known experts on negotiation, and the co-author of Getting to Yes, the world’s all-time bestselling book on the topic with more than 15 million copies sold. He’s a co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation and has devoted his life to helping people, organizations, and nations transform conflicts around the world, having served as a negotiator in many of the toughest disputes of our times and consulted with the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon. His upcoming book you can preorder now is titled, POSSIBLE: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict, and we’ll be digging into it here on the show in the coming weeks. But these two men, Thomas Hübl and William Ury are called on by countries and organizations around the globe to bring peace to relationships, whether nation to nation, or person to person. What Drives Your Health | You Don’t Have A High Blood Pressure Medication Deficiency - It Is Caused By Something
High blood pressure medications have become one of the most common prescriptions in our culture. Current stats put about 50% of Americans on high blood pressure, with people needing it at younger ages all the time. Like many ailments we accept this as a norm and taking blood pressure meds is like having your morning coffee or tea, just a norm. But at the core, there is a reason our blood pressure is high! High blood pressure is a symptom of the body not doing what it’s supposed to do. Or in truth, the body is trying, but it can’t overcome…something we are doing to it or not doing for it. There are little side effects to the medication itself, but what else is going on? Being overweight is the primary correlation but then you have seemingly fit people like actor Will Smith who was on them too. How does that happen? I’m joined by Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert. Misbelief w/ Kevin Miller | The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action
I wrap up our series on Misbelief with The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action where I distill it all down to what most stood out to me. What I see are the foundational fundamentals of the issue so we can better understand, embrace, and take action on how to better serve ourselves and humanity with our beliefs. Or as you’ll soon hear, our letting go of beliefs, as we tend to understand them in our culture. Our catalyst again has been Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics Dan Arielly and the message from his book, MISBELIEF: WHAT MAKES RATIONAL PEOPLE BELIEVE IRRATIONAL THINGS. Most of you are aware that my father had a surprise cancer diagnosis recently. Six weeks later he took his last breath here on earth. This has shaken me, in a beneficial way, on various fronts. I find myself questioning my quote, beliefs, regarding spirituality, money, health & wellness, and relationships. You will hear more from me on this in coming episodes. But it goes to further showcase to me how we limit ourselves and cause harm to ourselves and others when we wrap ourselves up in the concepts of beliefs You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. Misbelief Discussed w/ Jared Angaza | Reject Your Beliefs & Strengthen Your Faith
We continue our discussion on misbelief and strive to get to the heart of how our beliefs primarily exist to serve and protect us. However they are seldom if ever, fact. I want you to hear that. Few if any of your beliefs are fact. They are not right and other’s are wrong. And a dramatic amount of your current problems and stresses and relational issues are due to your unhealthy relationship with your so called beliefs. Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics Dan Arielly claims they are mostly in truth, “misbeliefs.” His book, MISBELIEF: WHAT MAKES RATIONAL PEOPLE BELIEVE IRRATIONAL THINGS, is our muse for this series. My co host this discussion is my brother, Jared Angaza. Who every once in a while I’ll remind you that while our last names are different and we look nothing alike, we have the same parents. Supposedly. But through a lifetime of pursuing wisdom, we’ve seen the early beliefs of our upbringing…change. Evolve. Get rejected. So we’re going to try and get to some root issues of what our beliefs are actually useful for, and when they are not. And ultimately I hope we can showcase the great freedom there is in trading in the word belief, for the term of…faith. Misbelief w/ Dan Ariely | How To Keep Our Beliefs From Imprisoning Us
You’ve heard me talk often as of late about what I’ve grown to believe are the dangers of our individual and cultural beliefs. We all want to know what is and what is not and be able to count on it. That’s human nature. But the more I’ve learned in my lifetime, the more of my past beliefs I no longer believe. I just assume then, that many of my current beliefs, I may also change as I continue to learn more. So then what value are beliefs? And how much trust do we put in our beliefs? This is a controversial topic, as we want to believe, our beliefs, are truth and fact. But…they are not. If you can’t accept that, either run from this episode, or take a deep breath and open yourself to…freedom. Our guide for this series is Dan Arielly. Dan is an Israeli-American professor and author. He serves as a James B. Duke Professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. Ariely is the co-founder of several companies implementing insights from behavioral science. What Drives Your Health | How To Have Your Healthspan Match Your Lifespan
The culture talks about “life span”, which is how long we live from the day we are born until the day our heart stops beating. Health span however, is how long you are well and able. Do you care more about living to be 100, in a nursing home, in a wheelchair, hooked up to oxygen, wearing diapers, and completely devoid of any conscious thought, or being active and able in body, mind, and spirit, well into your sixties, seventies, or eighties? Dr Randy James and I recorded this segment following our weekly, Friday guys gathering where we share our lives together. One of the guys had just spent time with his family and witnessing his elderly mother who could not get around much and was not able to join the family in much of any activity other than eating. While we want to be sensitive, he was just aware she has peers who are fully capable in body and mind and he’s aware of her lifestyle choices that have not helped the disability she finds herself in. Randy and I have a candid and I hope compassionate discussion on this and it brings to light what our goals are, and how our daily actions are supporting these goals. Happierness w/ Kevin Miller | The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action
We wrap up our series on Happierness featuring Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks, and Oprah Winfrey, who just co authored the book, “Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier.” In the last episode I also talked with my brother, Jared Angaza, and we discussed further aspects of this grand, cultural pursuit of happiness and what is at the root of it. This is my Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action episode to distill it all down, and I found six primary issues around happiness that stood out from our conversations. Let’s walk through them together You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. Happierness w/ Jared Angaza | How To Understand Your Natural Set Point For Happiness
We continue our series on Happierness which we kicked off with Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor, Arthur Brooks. Arthur’s new book with Oprah Winfrey is called Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. This issue of happiness is significant to me for two reasons: 1) happiness is such a hot topic because we as a culture are not finding ourselves…happy, and 2) I feel we are mostly dealing with the symptoms regarding happiness and not the root issues. To dig further into what I feel are root issues, I have with me…Jared Angaza. Jared is a strategist, activist, and storyteller behind many influential brands and campaigns. And he’s my brother and business partner and someone who I ponder the topics of drive and motive and meaning with…a lot You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. What Drives Happiness Expert, Atlantic Columnist & Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks
We continue our series on Happierness with happiness researcher and evangelist Arthur Brooks. This is part two where we go behind the scenes to find out What Drives Arthur in his personal life as he strives to practice what he preaches. I appreciate that Arthur is up front with the fact that he’s not naturally prone to be in a so-called, happy state. He must proactively work at it. Me too. Arthur again is a Harvard Professor, a columnist at The Atlantic, a very in demand speaker, and author of 12 books. I had him on the show in 2023 for his book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. The message in that book continues to influence me. This time he’s back with his new book co authored with Oprah Winfrey, titled, Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. Arthur is a very intentional person and deeply considers all areas of his life. When I asked him about his values regarding his career he spoke to his efforts to stay aware of the why of what he does as opposed to just the what. In his pursuit of health I found it interesting that he cited he’s not necessarily happy to be exercising, but it helps him be less unhappy overall. This episode is quite an interesting journey through the lifestyle of one of our cultures leading experts on happiness.
