I wonder if we think that Jesus’ ministry is over until he returns in his glory? We might think that Jesus worked hard during his thirty-three years on the earth, so he is enjoying a well-deserved rest. That, of course, is far from the truth. Jesus did not ascend into heaven so that he could leave the Church - he ascended so he could lead the Church. Just as his death and resurrection were central, so is his Ascension and his future return. The Ascension is a reminder that the victory of the gospel is secure. His future return informs us that all is not fully realized, that there is still work for us to do. Another important fact that we can draw from the Ascension is that our bodies matter. We know this precisely because of the effort Jesus made after his Resurrection in proving to the apostles that he was not a ghost. He said: “Look at my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” (Lk 24:39) The fact that Jesus retained the wounds on his body proves to us that our efforts in sharing the life of the gospel will require sacrifice. Our bodily and physical presence is important, not merely our spiritual understanding. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we offer God all that have; body, soul, and spirit, safeguarding the precious gift of God within. Jesus is now standing at the right hand of the Father. He may have lingered for some days and weeks after his resurrection, but he is not lingering now. He has joined the wondrous Trinitarian circle once more, the same circle of love from which his humanity issued forth. Just as Jesus’ presence at God’s right hand strengthened the early members of the Church in their persecution and suffering, so we have the confidence that Jesus is still in charge. He is the main celebrant of every Mass we attend, he is inspiration of every prayer we say. We live that hope. Jesus Christ is watching over us now and forever. The Ascension promises that Jesus will finish everything he has promised. That is Good News, indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia. Blessings, Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo Jesús,Les doy la bienvenida a "LA BUENA PALABRA", nuestro podcast diario donde los Misioneros Redentoristas de la Provincia de Baltimore comparten la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Soy el Padre Manuel Rodríguez, redentorista, de la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Hoy es jueves, 9 de mayo de 2024, en la sexta semana de Pascua.La lectura del evangelio de hoy es de Marcos capítulo 16: versos15-20. Estamos usando la lectura de la Ascensión de Jesús al cielo. En muchas diócesis de los Estados Unidos se celebra en este día, pero hay otras diócesis, como la diócesis de Brooklyn, que celebra este domingo, el 12 mayo. Utilizamos el Evangelio de Marcos que es el de la Ascensión de Jesús. La misión que Jesús encarga a sus discípulos es una misión clara y poderosa: "Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el evangelio a toda criatura" (Marcos 16:15). Este mandato no solo fue para los discípulos en ese momento, sino que también se extiende a todos los que siguen a Jesús hoy, es decir, a nosotros.La Gran Comisión, como se le llama, es un recordatorio de que el mensaje del Evangelio no es exclusivo para un grupo selecto de personas, sino que es para todos, en todas partes. No hay límites geográficos, culturales o sociales para la obra de Dios.¿Qué significa realmente predicar el Evangelio? Va más allá de simplemente compartir palabras; implica vivir una vida que refleje el amor y la gracia de Cristo, siendo testigos vivos de su poder transformador. Ciertamente predicamos con nuestras acciones más efectivamente que con nuestras palabras.El pasaje continúa describiendo los signos que acompañarán a los que creen: expulsarán demonios, hablarán en nuevas lenguas, tomarán serpientes y, si beben algo mortal, no les hará daño. Estos signos no son simplemente espectáculos para impresionar, sino manifestaciones del poder de Dios que respalda el testimonio de los creyentes.Sin embargo, es importante no malinterpretar estos signos como un mandato para buscar activamente experiencias milagrosas. Más bien, son ejemplos de cómo Dios puede intervenir en nuestras vidas cuando nos rendimos a él y confiamos en su poder.El versículo 20 concluye con la afirmación de que los discípulos "fueron por todas partes y el Señor actuaba con ellos y confirmaba su palabra con las señales que los acompañaban". Esta es una promesa reconfortante: cuando obedecemos el llamado de Dios y proclamamos su Evangelio, no estamos solos. Él está con nosotros, obrando a través de nosotros para cumplir su propósito.En resumen, somos llamados a ser portadores del Evangelio, llevando esperanza y vida a un mundo necesitado. Que nuestras vidas sean testigos vivos del amor y la gracia de Cristo, y que confiemos en que Dios está obrando en y a través de nosotros para su gloria.Que el Señor les premie por ser discípulos misioneros de la Buena Nueva.

El Espíritu Santo, Hermano Eligio y YoEl evangelio de hoy nos enseña como trabajar en comunidad, mejor dicho como trabajar en FAMILIA. Me hace recordar algo que un viejo amigo me ayudó entender. Su nombre fue Eligio Encarnación. Fue un hombre casado con una buena esposa y varios hijos. Fue un hombre del campo, un agricultor. Además, Eligio formó parte de un viejo grupo de hombres que habían salvado y preservado la fe católica en Puerto Rico desde el tiempo cuando los españoles habían conquistado a Puerto y habían expulsado todos los sacerdotes católicos de allá. Eligio fue un llamado CHEO. Los Hermanos Cheos habían sido formado por dos hermanos que tenían el nombre José, o sea Cheo. Los Hermanos Cheos defendieron y preservaron la fe católica en Puerto Rico hasta y aún después de Puerto Rico tener de nuevo sacerdotes católicos. Eligio y Hermano Jesús, otro hermano Cheo me ayudaron predicar cuando yo casi no sabía hablar en español. Algún día yo predicando en una Misa decía…NOSOTROS CAMPESINOS. Después de la Misa Eligio, agarrando mis manos me dijo: Estas no son manos de agricultor, de campesino”. Yo le respondió: “Puede ser que tienes razón, Eligio. Pero digo Nosotros campesinos porque me siento viviendo en solidaridad y en santa comunión con Uds. hombres del campo. Por eso hablo así. En el evangelio de hoy Jesús dice esto en la Ultima Cena: Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío. Por eso he dicho que tomará de lo mío y se lo comunicará a ustedes". Es que Jesús siempre vivía y se sentía en unión y en solidaridad con su Padre y con el Espíritu Santo cuya primera venida celebraremos pronto. Por eso, aunque no tengo las manos arrugadas de un campesino creo que mi querido amigo Eligio con sus manos del agricultor, creo que Dios, Jesús por el Espíritu Santo hacía unas cosas hermosas con nosotros como espero que seguirá haciendo con todos Uds. queridos hermanas y hermanos.

OPORTUNIDAD PERDIDA Yo soy un sacerdote redentorista. Tengo los 84 años y vivo en esta comunidad con otros redentoristas que tenemos problemas de salud. Por eso no estamos en el ministerio activo sirviendo en parroquias y predicando como hacíamos antes. Pero como todos Uds. somos hijos de Dios que cada día intentamos amar a Dios un poco mas con todo nuestro corazón y no con únicamente un diría yo pedacito de nuestro corazón. Pero a veces se nos presentan oportunidades de darle a conocer nuestra fe en Jesucristo. Pero el otro día yo perdí una buena oportunidad de hacer eso. Yo les explico. Por la tarde yo salgo a un parque al lado de una laguna bonita cerca de donde vivo acá. Voy vestido no de cura sino con camiseta sencilla. Aquel día al cual me refiero mi camiseta tenía la frase escrita en inglés que dice BELIEVE. O sea. TENGAN FE. Una señora que iba pasando con sus amigos y su perrito. “O!! Tu crees. En que crees?¿Tu crees en Santa Cló?.Casi siempre para mi hablar con gente desconocida es cosa muy fácil por el temperamento alegre y espontáneo que tengo. Pero aquel fue un momento muy incómodo para mi. No sabía que decir. No quería responder en broma. Pero a la misma vez no tenía el valor de decir en aquel momento: “La verdad es que creo en Dios y sobre todo creo en Jesucristo que creo yo vine para enseñarnos en carne y vivo el amor de Dios”….Como les dije eso fue una oportunidad que yo, sacerdote viejo pero mucho antes de ser sacerdote hijo de Dios, Hermano salvado por la Pasión y Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús quien me ha regalado su propia mamá María para ser la mía también…El evangelio de hoy habla del odio o por lo menos el desprecio que sus discípulos iban a recibir por darle a los demás testimonio de su fe en él y amor para èl..Pido sus oraciones para que yo mas tarde ni Uds. pierdan ninguna oportunidad de decir si CREO y entonces explica un poco en quien creemos y por qué.

Hoy Jesús les dice a nosotros:: "Yo soy la verdadera vid y mi Padre es el viñador.Entonces Jesús nos dice a nosotros sus discípulos: . Ustedes ya están purificados por las palabras que les he dicho. Permanezcan en mí y yo en ustedes. Como el sarmiento no puede dar fruto por sí mismo, si no permanece en la vid, así tampoco ustedes, si no permanecen en mí. Yo soy la vid, ustedes los sarmientos; el que permanece en mí y yo en él, ése da fruto abundante, porque sin mí nada pueden hacer. Entonces Jesús, siguiendo con el ejemplo de él como la viña y nosotros como los sarmientos, mejor dicho, nosotros como los ramos que forman parte de una viña o de cualquier planta. Jesús habla de lo que hace un agricultor para que los ramos produzcan más y mejores frutos. El proceso de llama “la poda”. La Poda es cuando el agricultor corta o las hojas o parte de los ramos que son enfermos o débiles. Eso es lo que le pasó a Saulo cuando Jesús le llamó y le explicó a Pablo que Pablo estaba persiguiendo y hiriendo a Jesús mismo cuando Pablo perseguía a los seguidores de Jesús. Jesús fue como un agricultor con Pablo. Jesús estaba haciendo la poda a la mente y al corazón de Pablo. A lo mejor Pablo sufría mucho al darse cuenta del daño que había hecho a Jesús y a los cristianos. Pero lo hermoso de la poda de Pablo, dura como era, fue que Pablo se hizo un apóstol grande valiente y gozoso de Jesús. De esa forma Pablo iba cumpliendo lo que Jesús dice en este trozo del evangelio de Juan que hemos oído hoy. Juan presenta estas palabras de Jesús: Yo soy la vid, ustedes los sarmientos; el que permanece en mí y yo en él, ése da fruto abundante, porque sin mí nada pueden hacer. Pablo, al caer de su caballo. Pablo al oír las palabras de Jesús Pablo al visitar a tantos países hablando de Jesús…PABLO PRODUJO MUCHO FRUTO…frutos de amor, frutos de fe, frutos de Nueva y Gozosa Vida para los que le hacían caso y seguía a Jesús. Queridos hermanas y hermanos es mi firme deseo y esperanza que Uds. y yo sigamos uniéndonos a la viña divina y humana quien es la PERSONA DE JESÚS.Tus comentarios si [email protected]

Fourth Sunday of Easter – BApril 21, 2024 Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter.Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to John. Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."The gospel of the Lord.Homily The principal image in this Sunday’s readings comes from the gospel, where Jesus proclaims: “I am the good shepherd.” This is one of the favorite images people have of Jesus and many homes have pictures or statues of Jesus as the good shepherd protecting his flock and holding a sheep in his arms or carrying it on his shoulders. But that peaceful image does not fit well with his pronouncement today: “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Jesus willingly gathers us together, but at great cost to himself. And we ourselves, as his flock, are not supposed to just sit passively under his protection, but are called to actively enter into the mission he received from God the Father. That is the whole question of knowing, which in the scriptures goes beyond intellectual knowledge to include sharing of life. So, when Jesus says: “I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father,” he is sharing his life with us so that we can enter into the same relationship with God that he has. And that, too, has its cost, because Jesus repeats: “and I will lay down my life for the sheep.” It is not enough to just follow after Jesus, we must also become like Jesus. We know Pope Francis’ famous phrase that the shepherd should smell like the sheep. Here Jesus almost turns that around; the sheep should smell like Jesus. Just as the Son of God took on our humanity in everything but sin., we need to become more and more like Jesus. We see that in the reading from Acts. Just as Jesus was hauled before the Jewish court to give an accounting of his preaching and miracles, now Peter is hauled before that same court, the Sanhedrin, to give an accounting of his healing of a cripple and subsequent preaching Jesus’ name. The same one who denied Jesus three times, now openly declares, “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved," before the very ones who condemned Jesus to death. In the inspiring words of his letter, John tells the believers that they are God’s children now, but more awaits them: “we shall be like him, for we shall see him as his is.” In the meantime, we are called to live, suffer and witness with and in Christ Jesus. So that we don’t think of ourselves too special as Jesus’ flock, he also says: “I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.” I pray that the joy and peace of our lives in Christ be an invitation to others to know and follow our Lord and Savior.
