7 Thyroid SUPERFOODS You Should be Eating Every Week
Add these 7 thyroid superfoods to your diet to naturally support thyroid function. What is a thyroid superfood? Well, a superfood is just a food that has more nutrients per unit compared to other foods. There's nothing magical about these superfoods except that they provide more of the nutrients that your thyroid needs compared to other choices. This means that by changing up the foods you put into your body you can ensure that you are giving your thyroid the best shot it has to function at optimal levels. Please note that these foods will not magically heal or fix your thyroid, though! But, all things being equal, it would be better to consume these foods because of the nutrients and benefits that they provide to your thyroid compared to others. 7 Thyroid Superfoods include: #1. Blueberries Blueberries are low in sugar and high in phytonutrients (plant compounds). Antioxidants in the form of anthocyanin and polyphenols help fight free radicals in your cells and prevent cellular damage. 1 cup of blueberries = 85 calories, 21 grams of carbs, 24% vitamin C, 36% vitamin K. How much? ½ to 1 cup of blueberries each day, frozen or raw. #2. Seaweed Seaweed is the best food source of iodine but the concentration can vary based on numerous factors. 1 gram = 16 to 1984mcg of iodine. #3. Maca root 2 tablespoons = 91 calories, 20 grams of carbs, 4 grams protein, 1 gram fat, 2 grams dietary fiber, 133% DV vitamin C, 84% DV copper, 23% DV iron, 16% DV potassium, 16% DV B6, 11% DV manganese, 8% DV niacin, 7% DV of calcium, 6% DV of riboflavin. Use 1-2 tablespoons each day in organic powder form in a morning smoothie. #4. Brazil nuts Eating brazil nuts is the easiest way to get selenium into your diet aside from supplements. 1 brazil nut = 68 to 91mcg of selenium but concentration can vary by a lot so watch for signs of selenium toxicity. #5. Coconut oil One of the best fats to cook with! Coconut oil provides your body with a pure source of energy. How much? 1-2 tablespoons per day. #6. Garlic One of the best nutrients available. Also adds a ton of flavor to foods. If you don’t like the taste use 500 to 1500mg of garlic capsules per day. #7. Mussels (can opt for other shellfish) Mussels great source of protein jam-packed with thyroid-specific nutrients. 150g of mussels contain 18 grams of protein for 129 calories and almost 1 gram of omega 3 fatty acids. Consume 1-3x per week for best results. How to Sleep for Better Thyroid Health & Weight Loss
This video outlines my best tips and tricks to get better sleep. Sleep is probably the single most important therapy that I know of when it comes to treating just about ALL diseases and conditions. Want to lose more weight? Get more sleep. Want to reduce inflammation in your body? Get more sleep. Want to improve your autoimmune disease? Get more sleep. Want to age better? Get more sleep. Getting 8 hours of sleep every night is probably the single closest thing we have to a "cure" for these conditions and is something that we ALL need and can all get more of. Every time I talk about the importance of sleep, though, there are a number of people who ask HOW they can do it. Well, here's your answer! These are 12 tips and tricks that I've used successfully on either myself or my patients to help them get better sleep. List of tips: #1. Get a sleep divorce Sleep in a different room from your partner/spouse. #2. Set your temperature 1-2 degrees cooler Lowering the temperature in your house or around your body can improve the depth and quality of your sleep. #3. Have more sex (earlier) Having more sex is great for better sleep but make sure you have it early in the day! Having sex right before bed may make falling asleep difficult. #4. Take supplements Some supplements, such as melatonin, can definitely help you fall asleep faster. #5. Use a screen shader Screen shaders are built into most devices and they allow you to naturally block out blue light. #6. Keep a worry journal A worry journal can help you get rid of thoughts that race through your mind at night and keep you from falling asleep. #7. Use a white noise machine Using white noise or other sounds can help you fall asleep and reduce the chance you wake up from small noises. #8. Eliminate caffeine/coffee Cut back on coffee or caffeine by at least 50% from whatever your daily dose is! Some people are very sensitive and need to be off of it for good. #9. Use meditation Meditation is incredibly helpful at helping you calm down and can help with anxiety. #10. Wear blue light blocking glasses If you can't get your device to block blue light then you can use blue light blocking glasses at night to prevent circadian rhythm disruption. #11. Change your pillow Play around with the texture and firmness of your pillow. The right pillow can make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. #12. Massage therapy and chiropractic work Using massage therapy or chiropractic work can help ease muscle tension and improve the depth of your sleep. Using FAR IR Sauna to Treat Hashimoto's Naturally (How it works & why you should consider it)
Did you know that getting into the sauna 3-5 times per week may actually be able to treat Hashimoto's thyroiditis? FAR IR sauna has a number of benefits that you as a Hashimoto's patient should be aware of so you can take advantage of them. First, let's talk about what a FAR IR sauna is and how it compares to a regular Finnish sauna. The FAR IR sauna contains a combination of both heat and light waves that have therapeutic benefits. Both the Finnish and FAR IR saunas heat up the body and cause sweating but the penetration of the FAR IR sauna is greater which is why it's probably better for detox. FAR IR light waves can penetrate several centimeters into the skin which is enough to get into subcutaneous fat cells, some ligaments/joints, and even some superficial organs. We also know that heating up the body induces many beneficial changes to both enzymes, proteins, and even genetic changes. These occur as your body tries to get back to its normal state. The triggering of these proteins and enzymes enhance the detoxification process which make sauna therapy so effective. What type of benefits will getting into a FAR IR Sauna provide? Check them out below: #1. Detoxification #2. Reduced inflammation #3. Weight loss #4. Relaxation and stress reduction #5. Improved immune function #6. Pain relief #7. More energy #8. Better sleep Want to get these benefits? You'll want to spend at least 15 minutes 3-5 times per week in a FAR IR sauna. Try to get a deep sweat while you are in there. FAR IR sauna therapy is safe and effective as long as it is done correctly. Does Keto Cause Thyroid Problems? Keto & Hypothyroidism
Should you avoid the keto diet if you have thyroid problems? Will the ketogenic diet cause hypothyroidism or low thyroid function? The answer is maybe. I'm not a huge fan of keto for thyroid patients for a few reasons and we will be discussing those reasons below. Having said that, there is a time and a place for using the keto diet if you have thyroid problems. Will keto cause thyroid problems? Probably not, but it may trigger it in some people or make it worse in others. It’s not the keto causing it per se but it’s the fact that you were probably bordering on hypothyroidism anyway and that just happened to be the trigger. It’s also the case that some people who do keto with existing thyroid disease will get worse. Not most, not all, probably not the majority, but some. So that is a risk worth considering before you go on it. Some of the pros of the keto diet include: May cause rapid weight loss (sometimes but not always) Impact on insulin and blood sugar Treats depression, cognitive function, and memory May be better for appetite control Some of the cons of the keto diet include: May not work as well for women as men May reduce free T3 levels and increase reverse T3 levels (appears to be proportionate to carbohydrate intake) May increase cholesterol levels May deplete minerals/nutrients Easy to do wrong (unhealthy versions) Key takeaways for thyroid patients: 1. Keto can work for thyroid patients, I’ve recommended it on thyroid patients and have seen success. 2. I’m hesitant to recommend it long-term as it hasn’t been well studied. 3. Healthy keto is probably much healthier than the standard american diet, so if you like eating that way and the alternative is worse, then it’s probably okay to continue the keto diet. 4. As a thyroid patient, if you have tried other diets without success, then trying a keto diet is probably okay. If it leads to weight loss then the pros probably outweigh the cons. 5. If you feel worse on the keto diet or you see that your thyroid gets worse, then stop doing it! 6. If you want to be safe, keep an eye on your thyroid lab tests after starting it. If you both feel worse and see a drop in your thyroid labs then you have an answer. If your thyroid labs get worse but you feel better then it’s unclear what you should do from there. Body Fat Hormone Guide - What Your BODY FAT Tells You About your Hormones
This body fat hormone guide explains what your body fat tells you about your hormone levels. Have fat in your upper arms? It could be from your estrogen and progesterone. Have fat in your bell? That's cortisol. The list goes on. Your hormones give you a LOT of information about what is happening inside of your body. The food that you eat is important in determining body fat accumulation but your hormones tell that fat WHERE to go. Let me rephrase: Eating a lot of extra food WILL cause weight gain but where that body fat accumulates depends on what is happening with your hormones. You can use this information to get valuable information about your hormones and which hormones you may have a problem with. Why is this important? Because it's often hard to pinpoint hormone problems and it's even more difficult to understand hormone lab tests. Many doctors do not specialize in this area so they are also less than helpful. This body fat guide is NOT a perfect science, however. Often times you may suffer from a combination of hormone imbalances which overlap with one another. But, in my experience, this information is usually very helpful. Body fat hormone guide: Fat on your upper arms/lower legs is usually caused by imbalances in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Body fat in your belly or abdominal body fat is usually caused by insulin resistance and problems with cortisol. Body fat in the trunk or neck area is usually caused by excess cortisol (this is when your cortisol actually starts to increase). The inability to build muscle mass or decreased muscle mass is usually caused by decreased testosterone. Body fat which is evenly distributed over your entire body is usually caused by thyroid problems and/or leptin problems. Fat in the thighs, butt, and breast area is usually caused by high estrogen. Weight fluctuations of 5-10 pounds that occur monthly are usually caused by progesterone problems (usually a high progesterone). Once you identify which problem you have you can then start to treat it with supplements, hormones, lifestyle, and so on! 6 Root Causes of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Avoid/Treat THESE Triggers)
These are the 6 most common root causes of Hashimoto's thyroiditis including triggers that you should avoid. These triggers can CAUSE a Hashimoto's flare up. Today we are going to be discussing the most common root CAUSES of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease and must be triggered before it manifests in YOUR body. When we talk about the root cause of Hashimoto's what we are really talking about are those things that trigger Hashimoto's in thyroid patients. These triggers can either cause Hashimoto's directly or lead to a flare-up. Understanding these triggers is very important because it may help you direct and target your treatment. If you can do this then you may be able to reduce or reverse your condition. These are the top 6 most common root causes that I see: #1. Stress (emotional, physical, social) Stress from ANY cause is probably the single most common trigger of Hashimoto's that I see. This stress can either be physical such as a car accident, it can be social such as a divorce, or it can be emotional such as problems with your spouse/work life, etc. #2. EBV viral infection EBV stands for Epstein Barr virus and it is a virus in the herpes family. This viral infection has been known to trigger Hashimoto's in susceptible individuals. Some people end up with chronic low-grade EBV infections that can be treated. #3. H. Pylori bacterial infection H. pylori stands for Helicobacter pylori and it is the bacteria responsible for the development of gastric ulcers. It is also an important factor in the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The good news is that this bacteria CAN be treated with prescription antibiotics and herbal antibiotics. #4. Nutrient deficiencies Nutrient deficiencies, especially Vitamin D, zinc, selenium, and iodine, can all increase your risk of developing Hashimoto's. Selenium and glutathione play a protective role in your thyroid gland and prevent damage from inflammation. #5. SIBO/SIFO (bacterial/fungal overgrowth syndromes) SIBO refers to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and SIFO refers to small intestinal fungal overgrowth. #6. Gluten sensitivity (Celiac & NCGS) Both Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity (nonceliac gluten sensitivity) result in damage to the gut lining and increase your risk of developing Hashimoto's. Avoiding gluten is an easy solution if this is your problem! Do you know what triggered or caused your Hashimoto's? This list isn't exhaustive but it includes some of the most common triggers! How to Make Your Thyroid Medication More Effective (6 EASY Steps to Feeling Better)
These steps will make your prescription thyroid medication MORE effective. You'll feel better by using these proven tips. Many thyroid patients have been prescribed thyroid medication yet they don't feel much different once they start taking it. Has that happened to you? You've probably been told that the only way to help you feel better is to adjust your dose but that may not be entirely true. It turns out that there are some things that YOU can do, which are within your control, which can help make your thyroid dose more effective. In other words, you can help your body feel better without adjusting your thyroid medication dose to make that dose of medication feel like it's more powerful. And that's exactly what we are going to talk about today. Below you will find 6 strategies that will help do just that: #1. Increase T4 to T3 conversion with supplements. Supplements like zinc, selenium, and guggul extract can help improve T4 to T3 conversion. The more T3 thyroid hormone you have floating around in your bloodstream the better you will feel. You can take these ingredients in supplement form and I have a product which contains all of them (T3 conversion booster). If you don't want to use my product you can get them from other sources as well! #2. Change WHEN you take your thyroid medication The next thing you can do is change what time of DAY that you take your thyroid medication. Some people experience BETTER absorption by simply taking their thyroid medication in the evening. #3. Increase cellular sensitivity to T3 using supplements Some supplements can also help your body become more sensitive to T3 hormone that you create or convert. Ingredients such as Vitamin E and Vitamin A help with this process. If you are not sensitive to the T3 that you create then you simply won't feel better. #4. Improve your gut to increase thyroid medication absorption If you want to feel better then you need to make sure that your thyroid medication is getting absorbed by your intestinal tract. #5. Stop taking medications that BLOCK thyroid medication absorption and function Did you know that prescription medications can block or limit how much thyroid medication you absorb? These medications can also slow down thyroid function independent of how they impact absorption. #6. Take it CORRECTLY Lastly, you need to make sure you are NOT taking your thyroid medication with food, coffee, juice, or other drinks. Doing so will limit how much thyroid medication is getting into your system! Prefer to listen via podcast? Living with Thyroid Problems? (7 Things ALL Thyroid Patients Should Know)
So you've been diagnosed with a thyroid problem? What does the world hold for you? What's it like living with hypothyroidism or low thyroid function? That's exactly what we are going to be talking about today! Your thyroid controls and regulates most systems and hormones in your body and, as a thyroid patient, you should be aware of the potential problems that this may cause in your life. But let me make this clear: Just because you have thyroid disease does not mean you need to suffer! There are always ways to both feel better, manage your weight, and control your symptoms (more on this below). With that in mind, here are 7 things that all thyroid patients should know: 1. It will be harder for you to lose weight compared to someone else 2. Doctors may not take your symptoms seriously 3. Some thyroid problems can be REVERSED or CURED (but not all) 4. Some days you may feel better than others 5. Your dose of thyroid medication will likely change throughout your life 6. You may not need to be on thyroid medication forever 7. If you are treated correctly you can get back to 100% (or close to it) Some of these may seem depressing but let me assure you that they are not! You CAN live a completely normal life even with extreme thyroid problems as long as you are treated correctly. Signs You Are Taking Too Much Levothyroxine (When to LOWER Your Dose)
Signs you are taking too much levothyroxine and when to know if you need to lower your dose. It's quite common for thyroid patients to accidentally take TOO much levothyroxine. Levothyroxine is the most commonly used medication to treat low thyroid (of all types). Unfortunately, it only works if you are using the correct DOSE, however! And there are many people out there right now, perhaps you, who are taking either too much or too little. The side effects associated with taking too much or too little are almost the complete opposite. If you've been taking levothyroxine or Synthroid and you are NOT feeling better then this video is for you. While it is more common for people to not take ENOUGH levothyroxine (meaning their dose is too small) there are still plenty of people out there who are taking too much levothyroxine. When you take too much levothyroxine you will start to experience some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism as well as a few added symptoms associated with the medication itself. Top 5 Prescription Weight Loss Medications (Use THESE)
These are the top 5 best prescription weight loss medications on the market. These weight loss meds actually work and I've personally used them on many patients with success. I've been helping people lose weight for a long time and over the years I've been able to test many different weight loss medications. I've found that while there are many prescription weight loss medications available, only a handful actually work very well. In this video, I will walk you through the top 5 best prescription weight loss medications available on the market, which ones I prefer to use, what you can expect while using them, how they work, and more. Before you jump in, make sure you understand that while prescription weight loss medications can be very effective, you should never just use them by themselves. If you are serious about weight loss you should combine these weight loss medications with other changes such as adjusting your diet, reducing your stress, exercising daily, and balancing your other hormones. If your plan is to jump on one of these medications and lose a bunch of weight, it's probably not going to happen! But these medications can be very effective if used correctly and if combined with a healthy lifestyle. The top 5 best prescription medications for weight loss include: #1. Saxenda/Victoza Saxenda is FDA approved for weight loss and is probably the single most effective medication on this list. #2. Invokana/Farxiga Invokana and Farxiga are not FDA approved for weight loss but they can help. They work by helping your body eliminate or pee out sugar from your kidneys. #3. Naltrexone Naltrexone is a part of one FDA approved weight loss medication known as Contrave. Naltrexone is not as effective as the others but it is very safe. #4. Metformin Metformin is commonly used to treat diabetes but it does have some weight loss benefits. Don't expect much from metformin though because many people are already taking it. #5. Phentermine Phentermine helps with weight loss by reducing your appetite and increasing up your metabolism. It only works if it is used correctly, however, so don't just jump on it without understanding how to use it. How Doctors Fail Thyroid Patients (12,000 Thyroid Patients Grade Their Doctor)
The unfortunate truth is that most doctors fail thyroid patients. This is why so many thyroid patients are unhappy with their current treatment. As a whole, do you think doctors help or hurt thyroid patients? This survey of over 12,000 thyroid patients shows that doctors, on the average, are not helping thyroid patients. These 12,000 thyroid patients were asked a series of questions and their responses were recorded. Among these questions, they were asked how satisfied they were with their current treatment, they were asked what type of problems and issues they continue to have, they were asked how long they had their thyroid disease, and they were asked what type of thyroid medication they were taking. The results are probably not surprising to you as a thyroid patient if you've been following me for any length of time but it's still good to go over them. On the whole, these 12,000 thyroid patients gave their doctors a 5 out of 10 on the satisfaction scale. This means that doctors are getting a 50% grade in thyroid management. In other words, they are failing! Additional important findings include: 62% of people who responded to the survey were taking T4 only thyroid medications like levothyroxine and Synthroid. 41% of respondents have been receiving thyroid treatment for 10 years or MORE 43% of respondents suffer from hypothyroidism from Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the #1 cause of hypothyroidism in most developed countries) The overall satisfaction among thyroid patients receiving treatment for their hypothyroidism is 5 out of 10 69% of respondents suffer from weight management issues (which is a major cause of their dissatisfaction) 77% of respondents suffer from fatigue or low energy (which is a major cause of their dissatisfaction) Thyroid patients rate the need for new thyroid therapies as a 10 out of 10 What does this mean for you? It DOESN'T mean that you have to suffer from thyroid disease forever. Instead, it means that you are probably going to have to look outside of the traditional advice that your doctor gives you regarding your thyroid. But there are things within your control that you can do to help you feel better. Things like changing your diet, exercising regularly, getting more sleep, reducing your stress, and taking thyroid boosting supplements can all help. How satisfied are you with your thyroid management? What grade would you give your own doctor? Let me know below! Your Questions My Answers (Q & A #1) - Diagnosing Hashi's, Finding your dose, Swelling & more
Time for another round of thyroid questions and answers! If you have questions, leave them below! Have questions that you want answered? Please leave them in the comments below! I am going to try and answer your questions at least a couple of times per month. Questions in this video come from a post I left on youtube and I will draw from future questions here for additional videos. Questions answered in this video include: Q - Does Hypothyroidism cause swelling/edema? And how do you fix it? A - YES! Low thyroid function can absolutely lead to edema and swelling. The key to fixing this problem is to fix your thyroid. Not ALL cases of edema/swelling are caused by low thyroid, however. Q - How do I know if I am hyperthyroid and whether or not it's due to my medication or Hashimoto's? A - You have to be careful about how you define hyperthyroid. Taking thyroid medication may drop your TSH but that doesn't necessarily mean that you are hyperthyroid. Many patients can be low thyroid with a low TSH even though their lab tests look hyperthyroid. Q - How do I know if I have just Hashimoto's or an under active thyroid? How do I diagnose Hashimoto's? A - The key is that you must have BOTH low thyroid symptoms AND elevated thyroid antibodies. Some people have what's known as seronegative Hashimoto's but that is not common. When in doubt it's statistically in your favor to assume you have Hashimoto's. Q - Can you still have symptoms even if your thyroid lab tests are in the normal range? My doctor says no. A - YES! You can definitely have symptoms even with "normal" or "optimal" thyroid lab tests. Each person is different and thyroid lab tests should not be used without also evaluating your symptoms. Q - Can you comment on the connection between Hashimoto's and high testosterone? Is this normal? A - Most women with Hashimoto's tend to have low testosterone but some women with Hashimoto's do have high testosterone, it's just far less common. Sometimes treating your thyroid can completely improve your testosterone levels. Q - How do know what the right dose of Nature-throid is? It's hard to pinpoint what my dose should be. A - When trying to adjust your dose of thyroid medication you may find that compounded T4/T3 thyroid medication allows for finer tuning of your dose. Sometimes taking a small dose one day and then a larger dose another day can solve the problem as well. From Conventional Doc to Thyroid & Hormone Specialist | Dr. Westin Childs & Jeff Whelchel MD
In this video, I interview Jeff Whelchel. Dr. Jeff Whelchel is an MD practicing in Amarillo Texas. He is trained in Family Medicine where he practiced in conventional medicine for 21 and a half years. He is now practicing functional medicine where he specializes in thyroid management and bioidentical hormone management with the use of BIOTE pellet therapies. He's a good friend of mine and one of the few people I would trust to treat my own family members. If you are interested in being treated by Dr. Whelchel or want to get in touch with this practice, you can do so at this link here: http://healthyhormones.us/contact-us/ During our discussion, we talk about his own personal health journey and how that impacted his interest in practicing functional and integrative medicine. We talk about how he transitioned from focusing on conventional thyroid management with the TSH and levothyroxine to the functional medicine approach with the complete thyroid lab panel and other thyroid medications such as NDT, T3, and SR T3. We also discuss the difficulties that conventional doctors face in treating thyroid patients with certain thyroid medications, how bioidentical hormones fit into thyroid management, how treating thyroid function can improve certain hormones, and when it's appropriate to use bio-identical hormones in thyroid patients. Can the Thyroid Gland Grow Back or Regrow?
Can the thyroid gland grow back or is it possible to regrow your thyroid? We will explore that very question in this video. One question I get from many thyroid patients is whether or not the thyroid gland can grow back. They are asking because they have often been told that they will need to be on thyroid medication for the rest of their lives. This proposition doesn't sound appealing, so it's at least worth looking into whether or not it's possible for the thyroid gland to regrow. Unfortunately, it's not possible, at least not in the way that you are probably thinking about it. The thyroid gland, like brain tissue and heart tissue, does NOT grow back once it's dead. But there is a difference between DAMAGED thyroid gland tissue and DESTROYED thyroid gland tissue. Damaged thyroid gland tissue can be salvaged and it may be possible to restore some of this damaged gland tissue back to its former glory. There are, however, some situations and conditions in which it's not possible to see this. Learn more about these conditions and whether or not it's possible to salvage your thyroid gland based on your thyroid condition. Using T3 Thyroid Medication To Feel 100% Again | Dr. Westin Childs & Paul Robinson
In this video, I interview Paul Robinson. Paul is a thyroid patient advocate and the author of 3 books on thyroid including Recovering with T3, the Thyroid Patients Manuel, and CT3M Handbook. Paul has successfully used T3 thyroid medication to recover his health back to 100% and has helped over 1,000 thyroid patients do the same over the last several years. T3 is the most important thyroid hormone in the body and it can be used to both treat and manage thyroid symptoms in the short term and long term. How to Test for Inflammation (Order THESE 3 Tests)
These tests are required if you want to test for inflammation in your body. These tests check for systemic or whole body inflammation. Inflammation is something that you don't want going on in your body. High levels of inflammation in the body increase your risk of developing almost every major disease including autoimmune disease, cancer, heart disease, stroke, and much more. Inflammation has also been associated with accelerated aging! No matter how you look at it, it's not something you want in your body. The good news is that you can test for inflammation in your body by looking at some simple blood tests. These blood tests help identify the presence of both acute and chronic inflammation but they don't tell you WHY the inflammation is present. These tests are so important that I order them in just about every patient that I see. They are especially helpful if you have thyroid problems or just want to stay in optimal health. These tests include: - ESR - CRP - Ferritin - Antibody testing (optional) - IL6, TNFa, and fibrinogen (optional) Learn why these tests are so important and what they mean for you in this video. What is T4 to T3 Conversion? What ALL Thyroid Patients Should Know
What is T4 to T3 conversion? T4 to T3 conversion is the most important aspect of thyroid function because it impacts T3 thyroid hormone levels. T4 to T3 conversion is probably the most important aspect of thyroid function and it's something that you should be aware of if you have ANY thyroid problem. T4 to T3 conversion refers to the process in which your body ACTIVATES thyroid hormone. Most thyroid hormone is floating around in your body as T4 and, in order to be useful to the body, it must be converted into T3. T3 is roughly 300x more biologically active than T4. It's not even close. T3 is, therefore, the most important thyroid hormone in your body. And while doctors know that this process happens, they make the assumption that it occurs perfectly in all people. This isn't the case, though. In fact, many people struggle to convert T4 into T3 for a variety of reasons including their own genetics. In this video, you will learn why this conversion process is so important, the various factors that positively impact thyroid conversion and the various factors which negatively impact it, and much more. Hashimoto's Without Antibodies? Yes, It's Possible (Sero Negative Hashimoto's Explained)
Is it possible to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis without positive antibodies? The answer is yes and and it occurs in the form of sero negative Hashimoto's. In fact, there are at least 2 conditions that result in negative antibodies even though there is active inflammation (the hallmark of Hashimoto's) in the thyroid gland. One condition is known as sero negative Hashimoto's and it is actually quite common. In this condition, patients have active inflammation in the thyroid gland but they have NEGATIVE thyroid antibodies. What's interesting, though, is that they still respond to normal treatments for Hashimoto's, and the disease tends to be less severe compared to those with positive antibodies. Another condition that results in negative antibodies is end-stage Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In both conditions, you still have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and active thyroid gland inflammation, but your antibodies may not show up in your blood. Learn more about these conditions here! How to Get Off of Thyroid Medication Safely (Avoid THESE Mistakes)
Are you currently taking thyroid medication? Have you ever wondered about trying to get off of your thyroid medication? You were probably told that you have to take it for the rest of your life, right? What if I told you that that may not be the case? Well, it's true. There are a lot of thyroid patients who are taking prescription thyroid medications who ultimately want to stop taking them if at all possible. And it turns out that there may be a path for certain people. But please read this disclaimer before you attempt it: Do NOT attempt to get off of your thyroid medication without physician supervision. There are some conditions which make getting off of thyroid medication impossible. These conditions include complete removal of the thyroid gland, complete destruction of the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine, and complete destruction of the thyroid gland from end-stage Hashimoto's thyroiditis. If you have any of these conditions then you MUST take thyroid medication forever. But what about other thyroid patients? There may be a way for you to potentially get off of your thyroid medication or potentially lower the dose that you are taking. Getting off of thyroid medication involves treating the root cause of your thyroid condition and fixing that problem. If you can do this then you may be able to lower your dose. Watch this video for more information on how to do exactly that. What happened to NP Thyroid? Why it was recalled
NP thyroid was recently recalled at the end of April due to concerns over the potency of this medication. NP thyroid was one of the remaining few NDT brands left after Nature-throid and WP thyroid were pulled off of the market for reasons last year. NP thyroid was recalled due to issues in dosing where it was found to be sub potent. Subpotency means that in certain lots NP thyroid was falling below the 10% therapeutic index set for this medication. What this is that some lots of NP thyroid contained much LESS thyroid medication and thyroid hormone than advertised. To prevent issues, these lots were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer. The only remaining NDT brand of thyroid medication on the market right now is Armour thyroid. Is this your only option if you were previously using NP thyroid with success? Not at all. There are still several options available to you. Option #1: You can simply switch to Armour thyroid. Armour thyroid has issues, though, so it may not be the best option for everyone, especially if you've previously used it without success. Option #2: You can try to get a compounded desiccated thyroid from a compounding pharmacy. The issue with this option is that many pharmacies are struggling to keep stock right now so this option may not be available to everyone. Option #3: You can switch to a combination of synthetic T4 and T3 to replace the combination T4 + T3 in NP thyroid. This would look like a combination of Tirosint + Cytomel/liothyronine/SR T3. Between these 3 options you should find something that works for you! When will NP thyroid and the other thyroid medications be back? At this time we don't know but I will update you if any further information comes out. Bioidentical Hormones Explained & Why They Are SAFE and EFFECTIVE
Bioidentical hormones, or body identical hormones, are both SAFE and EFFECTIVE. Learn more about these hormones and why they are so effective. There is a lot of confusion regarding what bioidentical hormones are and what they are not. Unfortunately, this confusion only seems to benefit pharmaceutical companies who want the waters to be muddy. Bioidentical hormones are hormones which are IDENTICAL to the hormones that your own body would produce in a natural state. These biological compounds can NOT be patented by pharmaceutical companies so they cannot make money off of them. Because of this, they create synthetic frakeinstein-esque hormones which look similar and then they refer to both hormones as if they are the same. Bioidentical hormones, sometimes referred to as body identical hormones, are NOT the same thing as these pharmaceutical hormones. Bioidentical hormones are MUCH safer because your body knows how to use them and knows how to handle them (it's creating them after all!). Examples of bio-identical hormones include: - Thyroid hormone (all types) - Progesterone USP - Estradiol USP - Testosterone USP NOT INCLUDED in this list are birth control pills and MOST other hormones that doctors prescribe. Learn more about these hormones, why I recommend them, how to know if you are getting them, and much more here. What is the Best Doctor to See If you Have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis?
The best doctor to see if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It's not what you think... Why does it matter what type of doctor you see if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis? Well, if you have this condition then you've probably already realized something very important... Standard doctors are just not very interested in treating the underlying CAUSE of Hashimoto's and they are all too fine with allowing your own body to destroy your thyroid gland in what they refer to as the "sit and wait" approach. If this doesn't sit well with you then you are in the right place. Today I am going to talk about your BEST options if you have Hashimoto's including the best doctors to help you feel better and reverse your condition. These doctors are NOT the typical doctors you might think of like endocrinologists and family practice doctors. Watch the video to find out how to get the best treatment for your condition. Supplements to STOP Facial Hair in Women (How to TREAT Hirsutism with Anti-Androgenic Supplements)
These supplements stop facial hair in women and may help to treat hirsutism by acting as androgen blockers. Learn how to get rid of your facial hair here. Are you a woman struggling with facial hair growth? Dark hair growth on the face is a warning sign of a hormone imbalance. As estrogen and progesterone levels fall this allows for testosterone levels to rise. As testosterone and androgens increase, you may start to develop facial hair growth. The good news? This can be treated or at least improved with the use of certain supplements that BLOCK this process from occurring. While these supplements can be very effective to help stop facial hair growth I would strongly recommend that you use them in conjunction with other therapies and hormones. This treatment will give you the BEST results possible. This list of supplements works to help reduce testosterone and androgens by either blocking the activation of testosterone to DHT. They also work by improving estrogen and progesterone levels which can naturally block testosterone receptors. Learn more about these supplements and how to use them here! How Eating Disorders CAUSE Thyroid Problems (+ Some Treatment Tips)
Eating disorders can CAUSE thyroid problems including conditions such as low thyroid and hypothyroidism. Learn how to fix the problem if you have an eating disorder and a thyroid problem. Did you know that eating disorders can CAUSE thyroid problems? And when I am talking about thyroid problems here I am referring to low thyroid conditions or hypothyroidism. Eating disorders, specifically anorexia and bulimia, trigger several changes in the body which have a negative impact on thyroid function. The result is a combination of metabolic damage and low thyroid function. Eating disorders cause thyroid problems by damaging the hypothalamic pituitary axis, by increasing stress hormones in the body, by decreasing T4 to T3 conversion, and by altering your weight. One big problem is that the TSH suppression seen by these disorders can make diagnosing the thyroid problem more difficult unless you know what to look for. Testing for Vitamin B12 Deficiency (Order THESE 4 Lab Tests)
How to test for Vitamin B12 deficiency. These 4 lab tests must be ordered to check if you have a B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency is INCREDIBLY common and most doctors are NOT testing for it correctly. The most commonly ordered test looking for B12 deficiency is the serum B12 test but this test falls short in MANY cases. While it tells you how much B12 is in the bloodstream it does NOT tell you if your body can utilize that B12. The good news is that there are other tests which you can order which tell you if your body can use your B12 or not. These tests are FAR more helpful than serum B12 and they must be ordered if you want to get an accurate picture of your B12 status. If you suspect that you have a vitamin B12 deficiency, or if you just want to stay healthy, then you need to get these 4 lab tests! Additional tests include: Methylmalonic acid, the MCV, and homocysteine levels. The video explains what these tests mean and how to interpret your results! Synthroid vs Levothyroxine Why These Medications are NOT The Same
Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Levothyroxine is one of the most prescribed medications in the entire world. And while Synthroid isn't prescribed as often, it is still used frequently by patients with low thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Most doctors and patients believe that these medications are interchangeable, but is it true? Not really. Even though these medications contain the exact same active ingredient they are NOT the same. Some people react better to levothyroxine and some react better so Synthroid but there's no way to know for sure if you will react well to one or the other without giving it a try. Medications that BLOCK Thyroid Function (Avoid THESE prescription medications)
Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Did you know that certain medications can BLOCK thyroid function? Some of these medications can make thyroid function worse in various ways which will impact how you are feeling. If you know which medications do this then you can either avoid them or switch to different medications. These prescription medications negatively impact your thyroid by either blocking T4 to T3 conversion, by damaging the thyroid gland directly, by influencing your TSH, or by interfering with thyroid medication absorption. Hyperthyroid Treatments Explained (3 Stages)
Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Hyperthyroidism is a condition characterized by excessive thyroid hormone production from the thyroid gland. In other words, your body is producing TOO much thyroid hormone. People ask me all of the time why I don't talk much about hyperthyroidism. The reason? Because most people who have hyperthyroidism end up with hypothyroidism and it has to do with the treatments available to hyperthyroid patients. This video breaks down the 3 stages of hyperthyroid treatment including the temporary phase with the use of anti thyroid medications, the permanent phase, and then the post treatment phase. The temporary phase is where you want to put most of your effort because you may be able to reverse your disease here. If you wait too long then this may not be an option for you and you will end up causing permanent damage to your thyroid either with thyroid surgery or with radioactive iodine ablation.
