Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Treating vitamin B12 deficiency is one of my favorite conditions to treat because I consider it an easy win for many people. Simply taking B12 is enough to fix the problem and may help you feel better very quickly. But before we talk about treatment we need to discuss vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms. You can find a list of symptoms associated with low B12 levels below: #1. Fatigue/weakness - Probably the most common symptom. #2. Weight gain - Unexplained weight gain may be due to low B12. #3. Brain fog - The inability to focus or concentrate. #4. Depression - Depression AND anxiety can be associated with B12 deficiency. #5. Numbness/tingling - Usually a sign of more advanced deficiency. #6. Tongue changes - Including tongue lesions. #7. Constipation #8. Heart palpitations #9. (Forgot to discuss in the video) HAIR LOSS - I can't believe I forgot this one but yes low B12 levels can lead to hair loss. #10. (Forgot to discuss in the video) ANEMIA - Also, I forgot to mention that low B12 can lead to a specific type of anemia (megaloblastic anemia) which is rare but does happen. How to TEST for B12 deficiency: There are several ways to test for Vitamin b12 deficiency but not all of the tests are great. The list includes: Serum B12 levels - Serum B12 is the worst way to test for B12 deficiency and is often very inaccurate. Methylmalonic acid - Methylmalonic acid is better than serum B12 but is often not ordered by doctors. MCV - MCV is a measure of the SIZE of your red blood cells. A high MCV can indicate you have B12 deficiency. Homocysteine - Homocysteine will increase with low B12 levels. If you decide that you have both the symptoms of B12 deficiency AND abnormal lab tests then you may want to consider supplementation. The best supplements include: - Methylcobalamin - Hydroxycobalamin - Adenosylcobalamin These are PRE-METHYLATED and PRE-ACTIVATED forms of B12. You will want to use these over the cheaper version of B12 known as cyanocobalamin. The recommended formulations of B12 are safe to use if you have the MTHFR defect and can be readily used by the body without the need for activation. Synthetic Vs Natural Thyroid Medication: Which is best?

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Today we are going to be discussing the difference between synthetic thyroid medication and natural thyroid medication. You're probably thinking that natural is superior to synthetic simply based upon the name and there are many people who believe that. But once you break down the actual ingredients you can see that synthetic may not be as bad as you think. So, what is synthetic thyroid medication? Synthetic thyroid medications include Synthroid and levothyroxine (there are others but most people think of these when they think about synthetic). Synthetic medications are said to be, well, synthetic or fake. What are natural thyroid medications? Natural thyroid medications, otherwise known as NDT or natural desiccated thyroid hormone, are medications such as Armour thyroid and NP thyroid. These medications are said to be superior because they are NATURAL. But is this really true? Somewhat. It turns out that ALL thyroid medications, including Synthroid/levo and natural medications contain the SAME thyroid hormones. There is no difference in the T4 found in synthetic medications vs the T4 found in natural medications vs the T4 that your own thyroid gland produces naturally. Where they do differ is in the SOURCE and additional hormones found inside certain medications. Synthroid, for instance, only has T4 thyroid hormone. Natural medications such as Armour thyroid contain both T4 and T3 which closely match the amount of hormone that your body produces naturally. This is why most people do better taking natural medications over Synthroid BUT there is still definitely a place for the use of these "synthetic" medications as well. 7 Thyroid Therapies You Can Do At Home

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Why would you want to do therapies at home? For 2 main reasons: Your doctor may only be willing to give you Synthroid (and doesn’t know about other therapies) and these therapies all help existing thyroid therapies as well. List of natural thyroid remedies and treatments: #1. The food that you put into your mouth. - Provides you with nutrients and INFORMATION - Causes or decreases inflammation - Improves gut health (20% of thyroid #2. Some medications. - Medications are 3x more expensive in the US - Available OTC in some countries Be cautious using these medications and only consider this if your doctor isn't willing to work with you. #3. Supplement protocols. Supplements work but they need to be tweaked in order to be very effective. By focusing on your gut health, thyroid health, adrenal health, and detoxification you can really improve your thyroid. A sample protocol may look like this: Thyroid supplements for 1-2 months (T3 conversion booster + Thyroid adrenal reset complex) Gut health supplements for month 3-4 (Gut Bomb 350 billion + Ultra Biotic x100) Detox supplements for month 5-6 (Functional fuel DETOX + Omega Soothe SR) #4. Exercise (improves thyroid function directly) And I'm NOT talking about intense exercise here. Movement of any kind, as long as it is pushing your body, will do the trick. What if you have crushing fatigue? If you do then Yoga/pilates are the best. Be sure to increase the intensity of your exercises as you can tolerate it. #5. At home thyroid testing. The real value here is that you can test your own blood to determine if the therapies listed above are working. You can check your labs with blood drop testing or with other companies such as life extension. #6. Stretching + Yoga Stretching and yoga help improve blood flow, reduce stress and improve cortisol. #7. Detoxification + IR Sauna Detoxification helps eliminate EDC’s and improve liver function. This is important because a large majority of T4 to T3 conversion occurs in the liver. You can check AST and ALT to see if your liver is functioning. Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. 7 Types of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Including causes and triggers)

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ What is Hashimoto's? It is the presence of inflammation IN the thyroid gland which is OFTEN (but not always) associated with elevated antibodies. In general, if you have thyroid symptoms and you have sympoms your doctor will diagnose you with Hashimoto’s. Treatment of Hashimoto’s is DIFFERENT from hypothyroidism (regular hypothyroidism). In Hashimoto’s you want to focus on your IMMUNE SYSTEM + THYROID compared to just your thyroid if you have regular hypothyroidism. The CAUSE of your Hashimoto's matters because it directs treatment and, if you catch it early enough, you will be able to treat or even prevent further disease progression. What causes or triggers Hashimoto's? #1. Stress-related Hashimoto’s. Any sort of stress can trigger Hashimoto's. This includes things like divorce, starting college, death of a loved one, and so on. Stress-related Hashimoto's is typically very hard to treat. #2. Infection-related Hashimoto’s. This is most commonly caused by the EBV virus but it can also be triggered by other bacterial infections as well. The treatment here is to focus on managing the infection. #3. Gut related Hashimoto’s. Gut related Hashimoto's can stem from things like leaky gut and tends to occur due to something called molecular mimicry. Gut related Hashimoto's tends to respond very well to dietary changes such as going gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free. #4. End-Stage Hashimoto’s. End-stage Hashimoto's is when the damage to your gland is permanent and cannot be reversed. You can identify this by ultrasound in which you will see an atrophied thyroid gland. #5. Mixed Hashimoto’s. This includes a combination of 1 or more of those listed here. This one is harder to treat as well. #6. Environmental/EDC/chemical related Hashimoto’s. Iodine consumption (without protection from selenium) Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (manmade combustion) Polybrominated biphenyls (plastics) Polychlorinated biphenyls (flame retardants) The key here is to focus on detoxing your body and improving liver function. #7. Inflammatory/Pregnancy-related Hashimoto’s. Pregnancy itself can lower your immune function and trigger the development of Hashimoto's antibodies. The goal here is to go into pregnancy as healthy as you can be. #8. Genetic component: This doesn't guarantee that you will get Hashimoto's but it does increase your risk dramatically.

Lab Tests Every Thyroid Patient Should Get

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Thyroid lab tests are important, no question, but you also need to be looking at other systems: Why? #1. Your thyroid affects almost every system in your body. #2. Your thyroid affects OTHER hormone systems and leads to imbalance. #3. Your thyroid affects your ability to absorb nutrients and leads to deficiencies. #4. These imbalances/problems/deficiencies/issues are NOT corrected with thyroid supplementation alone (or necessarily with natural therapies). Lab tests to get: FIRST - A word about insurance - these labs SHOULD be covered. Call your insurance company if you are worried, though, to prevent having to pay out of pocket. The diagnosis codes of hypothyroidism and Vitamin D deficiency work well and I've used these codes to get these covered by most insurance companies. The FULL set of lab tests you should be ordering as a thyroid patient: Serum Magnesium or RBC magnesium Vitamin B12 Folate Vitamin D Leptin Insulin, Hgb A1c, blood glucose - assess for insulin resistance Estradiol Progesterone Free and total testosterone Sex hormone-binding globulin Cortisol Iron studies (ferritin, iron, TIBC, % saturation) Cholesterol studies (HDL, LDL, total cholesterol) CMP Liver/kidney function (Creatinine and AST/ALT) Inflammatory markers (ESR, CRP, ferritin) Autoimmune markers (mostly thyroid antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibody and thyroglobulin antibody) Make sure to get these lab tests AND Thyroid lab tests: Which includes: TSH, free T3, total T3, reverse T3, free T4 + thyroid antibodies (initially and frequently if you have Hashimoto’s). Symptoms of Thyroid Tunnel Vision

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ What is thyroid tunnel vision? Symptoms you have thyroid tunnel vision: #1. You believe that all of your symptoms are related to your thyroid. #2. You are constantly reading and learning more about the thyroid but nothing is helping. #3. You constantly change your dose of thyroid medication without any relief. #4. You focus on relatively inconsequential things such as fillers/dyes in medications. #5. You’ve accepted that you will never get better or get relief. What to do about it? Step #1. Get a full set of lab tests which include MORE than just your hormones. Vitamin B12, Iron, Leptin, Insulin, Cholesterol, CBC, liver function, kidney function, inflammatory markers (autoimmune markers if necessary) Step #2. Don’t neglect your thyroid but focus on other aspects as well Adrenal health, gut health, detoxification measures, lifestyle factors Step #3. Layer therapies on top of each other. Therapies ALWAYS work better when added to each other. This means doing multiple things at once. Diet, supplements, change in medication, exercise, hormones, medications, fasts, etc. Step #4. Be patient. It took years and years to cause your thyroid condition. If you make changes to your medication don’t re-check your lab tests for at least 6 weeks Don’t go by how you feel day to day but how you feel month to month Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. Do I Actually Like Synthroid?

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ So, the question: Do I like Synthroid? The answer is yes! Synthroid (and levothyroxine) still have a lot of value even though many patients don't necessarily do well on them. Before you call me a pharmaceutical shill, realize that we need to be even-handed in our discussion of thyroid medications. There ARE some people who do well on Synthroid (even if they are the minority). Why don’t people like Synthroid? #1. Their dose is probably not right (they are taking too little) You can push up free T3 and total T3 by increasing your dose. But if you dose based on your TSH you will almost always be underdosed. #2. It’s one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world People have had bad experiences on it #3. Doctors are often dismissive of concerns over Synthroid Do you have to change thyroid medications to feel better? Not necessarily. In fact, there are minor changes you can make to feel better very quickly. Some patients do VERY well on T4 only (these patients include those who are super converters). Some people have no problem taking T4 and turning it directly into T3. What should you do if you are on levo/Synthroid and not feeling better? #1. Dose based upon your T4/T3 and reverse T3 level (NOT your TSH) #2. Switch to a different brand of T4. #3. If you are Synthroid try levothyroxine. #4. If you are on levothyroxine try Synthroid. #4. If you’ve tried both then switch to Tirosint or Tirosint-sol. #5. Try the 50mcg tablet of Synthroid/levo and dose based on that Clean up your gut and diet. Take supplements to support thyroid function (see the list below). High Dose vs Low Dose Iodine for Thyroid Patients (Which should you use?)

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ You can read the entire blog post here: https://www.restartmed.com/high-dose-iodine/ I get a lot of questions regarding how safe iodine is if you have thyroid problems. Tons of people out there wrongly believe that iodine is harmful if you have any sort of thyroid disease. The truth is that iodine can be incredibly helpful, especially for those with thyroid conditions. My experience suggests that as long as you use iodine correctly (and sometimes with other nutrients such as selenium) it is perfectly safe and even beneficial. But how much should you use? There are 3 main categories of doses that I go through in this video. The first includes low dose iodine: - Low dose iodine includes doses ranging from 150 to 170mcg per day. Low dose is great for sensitive patients and most thyroid patients but it lacks the ability to replete storage levels because it only impacts what your body needs day to day. The second includes high dose iodine: - High dose iodine (doses ranging from 6mg to 12.5mg per day) is much higher than the RDI/RDA but it allows you to replace the stores of iodine in your body and it also can almost instantly improve thyroid function (in some people) due to displacement of bromide/fluoride/chloride on thyroid hormone. The third includes very high doses or mega doses of iodine: - Megadoses include doses higher than 12.5mg per day. At this point, I have no recommendations for using doses this high as I don't believe the benefits outweigh the cons. Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. The problem with optimal thyroid lab tests & what to use instead

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ There is a focus among thyroid patients on optimal thyroid lab tests. These lab tests are said to be a representation of what a "healthy" level should be. Unfortunately, I think more harm comes from focusing on these levels than good and I want to explain why. Here are 5 reasons you don't want to focus solely on optimal thyroid lab tests: #1. Obtaining optimal lab tests doesn't guarantee that you will feel better. And this is really the main goal when you are being treated with thyroid medication. What you want is to feel better and relieve your symptoms of hypothyroidism but I am here to tell you that optimal lab tests do not guarantee this. #2. If you push for optimal lab tests you may end up using the wrong medication. It's not always a good idea to optimize both free T4 and free T3 levels. Doing so may cause you to unnecessarily add T4 to your regimen when you're doing fine on T3. #3. You can manipulate your lab tests and results however you want. Thyroid lab tests can easily be manipulated by changing how you take your thyroid medication. #4. You may be focusing on the wrong metric. Your clinical symptoms are often much more important than whatever your lab tests show. #5. It's not always possible to actually obtain optimal free T4 and free T3 levels at the same time. The more T3 you take the more it will drive down your T4. This just occurs due to thyroid physiology. What should you use instead? I recommend focusing on the following metrics: The TSH - Total T3 - Free T3/Reverse T3 ratio - Clinical presentation and symptoms - Other hormone imbalances - Resting heart rate - Blood pressure - Metabolism and calorie burn - Current dietary/calorie intake - Energy levels - Inflammation status - Cholesterol levels - How well you are converting T4 to T3 - You can read the entire blog post here: https://www.restartmed.com/the-problem-with-optimal-thyroid-lab-tests-fact-vs-fiction/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. Thyroid Medication Conversion Chart (3 Charts + Which to Use)

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ There are 3 main thyroid conversion charts that you can use. These charts can be helpful when you are trying to switch from one type of thyroid medication to another. This could include switching from T4 only thyroid medication to other types of thyroid medications such as NDT. The main problem with most conversion charts is that they heavily favor T4 (over T3) and that they tend to underdose patients. This results in a situation where patients tend to see an INCREASE in their TSH after they switch medications. And this leads them to falsely believe that the medication doesn't work (and sometimes doctors will suggest that this is the case). The truth is that most people would benefit if they only did a more correct conversion! Even though these conversion charts are more accurate than what most doctors use, they are still not perfect. Converting between thyroid medications is not an exact science due to how T4 and T3 interact with each person. In this video, you will find 3 charts to look at including the one that I recommend (the last chart). You can read the entire blog post here: https://www.restartmed.com/thyroid-medication-dosage-chart/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: Thyroid boosting supplement regimen (ideal for hypothyroidism from any cause): https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ - 2 capsules of Thyroid Adrenal Reset Complex daily - 2 capsules of T3 conversion booster daily - 1 capsule of Iodine Ultra Complex - 2 Scoops of Functional Fuel (Complete, DETOX, or ENERGIZE) Hashimoto's supplement regimen: - 2 Capsules of Thyroid Adrenal Reset Complex daily - 2 scoops of Functional Fuel DETOX daily - Pure D3 Liquid 2 drops daily - 1-2 Capsules of Omega Soothe SR daily Post thyroidectomy/RAI supplement regimen: - Thyroid Daily Essentials 1 packet each day - 2 capsules of T3 Conversion Booster daily (important if you take - T4 only medication!) 2 Capsules of Thyroid Adrenal Reset Complex daily 1-2 Capsules of Leptin Resistance RX daily ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. Why you Can't Stay on the Same Thyroid Medication Dose Forever

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Many people are often confused by the fact that their thyroid medication dose is likely to change over time. I've had numerous questions of people who find a dose that works for them, possibly for years, only to find out that it is no longer working. Why does this occur? The main reason has to do with the impact that thyroid medication has on TSH suppression and your body's ability to adjust its own thyroid hormone production. If you are taking medication, of any type, this process will be blunted and you will be unable to make changes as you would if you had a normally functioning gland. This means that you will need to adjust your medication to compensate for these changes. What type of things can cause changes to the demand for thyroid hormone? I've listed several that you should be aware of, but please note that there are many more than these: Age - Most people agree that the demand for thyroid hormone decreases as you age. I find this to be mostly true but not universally true. Stress - Stress, from any and all causes, can impact how much thyroid hormone you need. More stress typically results in increased demand for thyroid hormone (but not always). Occasionally, stress may necessitate a reduction in your dose. Weight gain - Recent weight gain, from any cause, may increase the demand for thyroid hormone in your body. The more mass and tissue you have the more likely you are to need more thyroid medication. If you suddenly or abruptly gain 20-30 pounds you should look at your thyroid dose. Weight loss (6) - Rapid and unhealthy weight loss may lead to an increase in demand for thyroid hormone while a healthy and sustained weight loss may result in a reduction in your total dose. It all depends on how you are losing your weight and whether it is healthy or not. Dieting - Calorie restriction, especially if used for the purposes of weight loss, may impact how much thyroid medication you need. Typically, the more you calorie restrict the more your body will need T3. You may also find that you have high levels of reverse T3 with calorie restriction. Chronic medical conditions Supplements - Have you started taking any new supplements? These may interfere with thyroid medication directly or with absorption which may necessitate changes to your medication. In addition, some supplements such as the ones that I recommend may help naturally improve thyroid function. If this occurs you may find that you need a smaller dose. Prescription medications - Prescription medications can also have either a positive or negative effect (7) on your thyroid medication. Not unlike supplements, it really depends on what you are taking and why. But you should be aware that starting new medications may interfere with your thyroid meds. GERD & other intestinal issues (8) Severity of thyroid condition Systemic inflammation You can read the entire blog post here: https://www.restartmed.com/you-cant-stay-on-the-same-thyroid-medication-dose-forever/

Birth Control Side Effects You Should be Aware of (Cancer, Weight Gain & More)

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Birth control pills can cause some serious side effects because of how they interact with your body. OCP pills (of all types) work by suppressing the normal production of both estrogen and progesterone. This can help to mask certain symptoms that may be associated with hormone imbalances but it doesn't actually solve them. Instead, man-made synthetic hormones in birth control pills act to suppress the normal hormone function in your body. This can lead to a number of serious side effects, some of which are very concerning. I'm not talking about the more typical side effects, such as breast tenderness, nausea, or headaches. I'm talking about more serious side effects, proven in clinical studies, that your doctor may not know about. Before you use birth control pills you should be aware that they are associated with the following conditions: #1. Breast cancer (20% increase risk for those taking OCP) #2. Weight gain (some studies indicate up to 10 pounds) #3. Menstrual irregularities and infertility even after you stop #4. Melasma and hyperpigmentation #5. Yeast infections (candida, vaginal yeast infections, and thrush) #6. Increased risk of developing autoimmune disease (MS, lupus, Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis, alopecia, and more) #7. How CBD Oil May Help Treat Hashimoto's (Lowering antibodies and improving thyroid function)

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ CBD oil is available over the counter in most states and can be used to help treat Hashimoto's thyroiditis. CBD is found within marijuana but it isn't the same thing as marijuana. CBD is one of many cannabinoids which can have a positive impact on your physiology and certain tissues in your body. CBD may help improve Hashimotos & thyroid function through the following ways: #1. Its influence on immune function - CBD reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines. #2. Its influence on the thyroid gland directly - Studies have shown that CBD has a direct impact on thyroid gland function. #3. Its influence on your hypothalamus - Your hypothalamus helps control metabolism, appetite, and T3 levels. Beyond these benefits, I am excited about CBD as a therapy for the following reasons: #1. It's safety profile. #2. Additional benefits beyond Hashimoto's. #3. The fact that its another therapy for Hashimoto's. #4. The fact that it's available over the counter. #5. Patient success stories. How Biotin Interferes with Thyroid Lab Tests & Causes Falsely Elevated Results

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Every patient with thyroid disease should be aware of how biotin interacts with and interferes with thyroid lab tests. It's important to understand, however, that while biotin does interfere with the accurary of your thyroid lab tests it does NOT interfere with your thyroid itself. Biotin interacts with the thyroid lab testing assay and can make your thyroid lab tests look higher than they actually are. It does this by increasing free t3 and free t4 levels and by decreasing TSH levels. This can lead your doctor to falsely believe that you are receiving too much medication. Obviously, this is an issue for many thyroid patients who are already undertreated, to begin with! How do you fix this issue? You can simply avoid taking biotin 2-3 days PRIOR to when you get your labs drawn. Up to 5 days may be necessary in some cases but 2-3 days should do the trick. It's also very important that you look at the back of all of the supplements that you are taking to see if biotin is in them. Only 30% of people know that they are taking biotin in their supplements which means that many of you reading/watching probably aren't aware that you are taking it! If you are, be sure to avoid taking it before your lab tests to ensure that it doesn't interfere with them. Is google suppressing alternative thyroid information?

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Over the last year or so there have been several big changes to how Google serves information to users in their search results. Two major changes between August 2018 (medic update) and June 3rd (broad core update) caused a massive drop in visibility of natural health oriented health websites. It seems that these changes were made in the name of "safety" and "quality" but the end result has been a drop in visibility for these websites. I've outlined much more information in the blog post listed below but in the video, I go over 4 major search results and how they have changed: #1. The search term "reverse T3" - The conventional mindset is that reverse T3 isn't useful and that it shouldn't be ordered. When you search for this term you get results back which suggest that it's not helpful and only show one side of the story. #2. The search term "how to cure hypothyroidism permanently" - This result brings back information which is full of "conventional" medicine sources which do not do justice to the natural therapies available to thyroid patients. #3. The search term "thyroid supplements" - This query brings back results which suggest that taking thyroid supplements is actually harmful when most people who search for this term are actually interested in learning more about how they help. #4. The search term "adrenal fatigue" - Lastly, adrenal fatigue is not recognized by the conventional medical community and all of the results suggest that adrenal fatigue is a myth. The results from these queries all bring back information which is critical of the more natural approach and more in favor of the conventional approach. I am concerned that this sort of suppression of natural health websites may slow down innovation and encourage the existing dogma as it relates to thyroid management. Hair Loss from Hashimoto's Thyroiditis? What causes it and how to stop it

Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Hair loss from Hashimoto's thyroiditis should be differentiated from regular run of the mill hypothyroidism. It should come as no surprise to you that dysregulation of thyroid hormone causes hair loss. The main difference is that about 30% of Hashimoto's patients also suffer from other types of hair loss which can cause confusion. And these other causes may or may not be related to your current thyroid function. So you could be taking the right type of thyroid medication and STILL suffer from hair loss. Can thyroid hair loss be stopped? The answer is yes, but it may require some time, effort, and energy on your part. Here are your next steps if you suffer from hair loss: #1. Ensure that you are taking enough thyroid medication. - If you aren't taking enough thyroid medication you may suffer from hair loss but it's also true that too much can cause issues. Because of this, you need to find what is optimal for your body. #2. Ensure that your thyroid medication is not contributing to your hair loss. - It's also important to understand that the side effect of some thyroid medications is hair loss. This can be confusing because you need to figure out if your hair loss is from too much medication, not enough medication, or because of your medication. #3. Reduce inflammation and autoimmune attack on your thyroid gland. - Updating your lifestyle can reduce inflammation and improve your overall nutrient status. This may have positive effects on both your thyroid gland and on your hair loss directly. #4. Look at your ferritin. - Ferritin is a marker of iron storage and may be the most important factor when it comes to hair growth/hair loss. You need at least a certain amount of ferritin for hair growth to occur. #5. Don't give up - Be patient and don't give up. It can take several weeks to months for you to notice an improvement in your hair loss and to start seeing hair growth. Explaining thyroid discrepancies and why no two thyroid patients are alike

Thyroid management and treatment can appear to be very confusing, especially as a patient. Part of this has to do with the fact that no two patients are alike. It's possible for a statement to objectively true and false simultaneously regarding treatment. This video outlines a sample of 10 different quotes and responses from patients on a wide spectrum. I discuss why certain patients feel one way with medication and why others can feel the exact opposite. The quotes used in this video are taken directly from a clinical study (link in the article). You can think of these statements as a proxy for larger segments of the population and you will probably find that you align with one or more of the statements detailed here. You can find a complete list of the statements that I discuss below: #1. "Levothyroxine was worse than nothing." #2. "On levothyroxine, I felt myself getting sicker and sicker every single day." #3. "Just please find something that gives me my life back." #4. "I feel good while on levothyroxine." #5. "Now I take T3 also and started feeling better, but I still do not feel well." #6. "Combination therapy changed my life and health. In my view, it is the best therapy for hypothyroidism." #7. "I was finally put on extract after 28 years on other options. I would never go back." #8. "Had a thyroidectomy many years, no adverse reaction or symptoms." #9. "If you find something that improves mental clarity and energy, we'll have something to discuss." #10. "I am on levothyroxine and have weight gain, brain fog, and pain in my points." Survey of Over 800+ Thyroid Patients Shows Doctors are Failing Patients

This is my breakdown of the verywell health thyroid survey which went out to over 800+ thyroid patients. This survey is full of very interesting and relevant results which can potentially help guide thyroid treatment in the future. This survey was NOT done by me but this video is my commentary and opinion on the survey. You can find the entire survey and results directly at this link: https://www.verywellhealth.com/survey-finds-doctors-are-failing-thyroid-disease-patients-4583130 The main takeaways from this survey include: #1. Regarding thyroid treatment with thyroid medication, only 6 percent of people felt completely satisfied with only 1 in 5 people (or 20%) feeling completely unsatisfied in their treatment. #2. No matter how many years they have been getting treatment, only 35% of thyroid patients claim that they have gotten better. #3. 45% of people in this survey have been receiving thyroid treatment for over 10 years. The results of this survey clearly show that the current hypothyroid treatment paradigm is failing patients, but why is that? I think one of the main reason has to do with how doctors (and even patients) look at hypothyroid treatment. The majority of this treatment focuses on T4 thyroid medication (which over 90% of patients in this study are taking) and reliance upon TSH testing. My own personal experience suggests that about 90%+ of patients feel great when they are taking combination T4 + T3 thyroid medication. Is the Carnivore diet safe if you have Hashimoto's? I'm not 100% convinced that it is safe in the long-term but there have been reports from some people that it can be effective. Because of this, I wanted to explore the diet and explain why it may be effective for some people. The carnivore diet includes mostly meat-based products but it also includes a small amount of dairy and eggs as well. At first glance, this may not seem very healthy, but we know that other restrictive diets have proven to be potentially therapeutic for certain individuals. One of the reasons that this diet may be effective is that it may be acting as a super elimination diet for your gut. We know that your gut can be the starting point and the perpetuating point of autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. By eliminating many foods it's possible that this diet is allowing your gut bacteria to balance and repopulate your intestinal tract. This may explain why certain people experience significant benefit on this diet. One big issue is the issue of safety. Is this diet safe to use long term? The answer is not well known but I am concerned about 2 main issues: #1. The issue of a diet high in saturated fat. And #2. The issue of potential nutrient deficiencies. Even in the face of these issues, there may be some place for this diet in the treatment of Hashimoto's but only after other diets such as the gluten-free diet, dairy-free diet, elimination diet, AIP diet, etc. have been utilized and failed. 3 Causes of Cytomel Related Hair Loss (+ Treatments)

Cytomel is a T3 only thyroid medication which happens to also be the most powerful thyroid medication available. The only problem? It can sometimes be associated with hair loss and, even though the medication is great, you should be aware of this problem if you are using it or thinking about using it. Before we jump in, just realize that Cytomel is the brand name T3 medication but this information also applies to liothyronine which is the generic version of Cytomel. There are 3 main ways that Cytomel may cause hair loss: #1. Hair loss related directly to the medication. - The first cause of hair loss has to do with the medication itself. The good news is that this is typically temporary and should resolve within 2-4 months (3-6 months at most). The exact mechanism of this hair loss is not known. The treatment for this issue is to give it time and to be patient! #2. Hair loss related to an excessively high dose. - This cause of Cytomel-related hair loss is dose-dependent and only occurs if your dose is too high. Because Cytomel is the strongest thyroid medication it is possible for you to take too much which may result in a hyperthyroid state and hair loss. The treatment for this issue is to simply reduce your dose. #3. Hair loss related to insufficient dosing. - Lastly, and perhaps most common, is hair loss related to an insufficient dose. Because Cytomel is so strong, doctors tend to underdose patients when they start taking it. This may result in a persistent hypothyroid state which leads to persistent hair loss. The treatment for this issue is to simply increase your dose. Despite these potential issues I still believe that Cytomel remains as a great medication (perhaps one of the best). If you are considering using Cytomel don't let this information scare you away because most people who use it do NOT experience hair loss. 40% of Thyroid Patients have B12 Deficiency (Treatment options + symptoms)

Vitamin B12 deficiency is incredibly common among hypothyroid patients. In fact, it is estimated that up to 40% of all hypothyroid patients suffer from B12 deficiency or sub-optimal B12 levels in their body. What's important here is that treating your thyroid is not sufficient to fix your B12 levels! You should think of B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism as two separate conditions that need to be treated. B12 deficiency is also difficult to identify because it shares many of the same symptoms as hypothyroidism. B12 deficiency is associated with the following symptoms: - Fatigue - Weight gain - Depression - Constipation - Brain fog You can see that many of these symptoms are also seen in hypothyroidism. Testing for B12 is actually quite difficult as the serum B12 test is not always accurate. You can, however, test for B12 with the methylmalonic acid test but this test is much more expensive. When using B12 you want to make sure that you are using the right type and formulation of B12. Formulations such as cyanocobalamin are cheaper and more readily available but they are not optimal especially if you have MTHFR mutations. Up to 20-40% of people have MTHFR mutations which impact the type of B12 that they can utilize by their bodies. Because of this, I recommend that hypothyroid patients utilize only methylcobalamin, hydroxycobalamin or adenosylcobalamin as these are more readily active than cyanocobalamin and compatible with MTHFR mutations. Lastly, if oral B12 supplements are not working for you then you should consider the use of B12 shots. While studies do not show that B12 shots are superior, it has been my clinical experience that they can be in certain situations. If you are looking for a B12 supplement, I recommend using one such as this: https://www.restartmed.com/product/po... Should you use thyroid supplements if your thyroid has been removed or destroyed?

The short answer is yes, the long answer is that there are still several reasons to supplement even if your thyroid has been removed. Once your thyroid has been removed it's better to think of yourself as hypothyroid rather than hyperthyroid (because many people who have their thyroid removed have it removed for this reason). That means once your thyroid is removed most of the information you find regarding hypothyroidism is relevant to you. In addition, once your thyroid has been removed and once you take thyroid medication, there are still several steps that must occur in your body in order for you to use that medication effectively. The first is that your body must activate the thyroid hormone and turn it from T4 into the active thyroid hormone T3. This process requires several key nutrients including Zinc and Selenium. Once your thyroid hormone has been activated it must then act on the cells themselves. There are several nutrients involved in this process as well as several hormone systems. Hormone imbalances such as leptin resistance, cortisol resistance, and insulin resistance can all interfere with thyroid hormone cellular function and there are supplements you can take to help improve this condition. They don't necessarily help directly, but they may help your thyroid work indirectly. You can find a list of supplements which all work if you don't have a thyroid or if it's been damaged by RAI below: Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/th... + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3... - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/th... - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gu... + https://www.restartmed.com/product/fu... - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ul... - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/th... + https://www.restartmed.com/product/po... Can You Stop Taking Thyroid Medication Once You Start

Is it possible to stop taking your thyroid medication? The answer is maybe, and it depends on your situation. There are 3 main groups of patients that we need to discuss and you should try to figure out where you fit into these categories to determine if you can stop taking your medication. Group #1: Those who MUST take thyroid medication. - The first group are those people who must take thyroid medication for the rest of their lives. People in this category include people who have had their thyroid removed through surgery, those who have had their thyroid destroyed through RAI, and those who have end-stage Hashimoto's thyroiditis. If you fit into this category then you will NOT be able to stop taking your thyroid medication because your body is unable to produce it on its own. Group #2: Those who were placed on thyroid medication inappropriately. - There are a number of people who have been placed on thyroid medication inappropriately. These people were often placed on their medication because of one lab test which may have been inaccurate. People in this category are often those who have been taking their medication for decades but who don't notice any difference on or off of their medicine. Group #3: Those who need thyroid medication but only temporarily. - The third group includes those people who do need to take thyroid medication but only for a temporary period of time. People in this category include those with early stage Hashimoto's disease, those who have hypothyroidism from a reversible cause such as obesity or dieting, and those who have hypothyroidism from iodine deficiency or other nutrient deficiencies. If you are taking thyroid medication from a potentially reversible cause of hypothyroidism then there is a chance that you can reduce or get off of your medicine. Before you attempt to make any changes to your thyroid medication be sure that you discuss it with your current doctor! It's not safe to simply stop taking your thyroid medication because your body becomes dependent upon it once you start taking it. It can take several months for your body to be able to produce thyroid hormone naturally again. 6 Problems with Natural Desiccated Thyroid Hormone

Download my free thyroid resources here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here Are you currently taking Natural Desiccated thyroid hormone? Maybe you are considering using this medication. Either way, there are some things you should know BEFORE you start using it. Like any medication, NDT is not a perfect medication and it does have some problems. I'm actually a big fan of NDT as a medication and I use it on a lot of my patients, but I am also aware that it isn't perfect and it doesn't work for everyone. Some of these problems include: #1. The formula keeps changing. The inactive ingredients in Armour thyroid, for instance, have changed several times throughout the last decade. Each time they have been changed there have been a number of people in which the medication seems to not be working as well. #2. It isn't always easy to get. Doctors have a bias towards T4 only thyroid medications compared to NDT formulations. NDT, while helpful, can be very difficult to get. #3. The amount of T4 and T3 in each dose is static. The dosing of NDT in each grain is always the same. What if you need more T3 relative to T4? What if your TSH is suppressed while taking NDT but your free thyroid hormones are low? There's no way to increase each component unless you take a new medication. #4. Not everyone responds well to T3. Certain people respond to anxiety, panic attacks, and heart palpitations when taking T3. #5. It may flare up your immune system. Because NDT is animal sourced and contains animal proteins and enzymes there is a small chance that it can flare up your immune system and worsen thyroid function in people with Hashimoto's. #6. Doctors tend to underdose NDT. Most doctors tend to underdose NDT, especially when transitioning patients from T4 to NDT. This is a big problem because many patients who try it aren't taking enough and they never feel "better". 5 Conditions Which Make Your TSH Less Accurate

The TSH is probably the most standard way to test for thyroid dysfunction but it's certainly not the most accurate way. There are at least 5 different conditions which, if present, can alter how reliable the TSH test really is. These conditions include: #1. Low T3 syndrome. - The first condition is low T3 syndrome. People with this condition have low levels of free T3 or total T3 but their free T4 and TSH may stay relatively normal. Free T3 should take precedence because it is the active thyroid hormone. #2. high TSH but normal T4. - Many people look at the TSH reference range and think that if they fall anywhere on that range that they are "normal". The problem is that this reference range includes people who aren't 100% healthy. Instead of using the standard reference range look at a tighter range which is less than 2.0. #3. Partial thyroidectomy with falsely normal T4/T3. - If part of your thyroid has been removed or radiated with radioactive iodine then the remaining portion must enlarge to try and satisfy the demand for thyroid function. This process causes changes to cellular sensitivity as your body attempts to produce enough thyroid hormone. People in this situation can have a normal TSH even though they are clearly hypothyroid. #4. Elevated TPO antibodies. - Those with Hashimoto's have elevated antibodies to their thyroid which causes inflammation and damage to the thyroid gland. These patients can have a normal TSH for a long time even though they are clearly hypothyroid. #5. D2 genetic mutations. - Certain genetic mutations can reduce how effectively you convert T4 into the active thyroid hormone T3. Up to 15-20% of people have this genetic mutation which can cause symptoms if you develop hypothyroidism. 5 Natural Remedies for Hashimoto's to Help Reduce Thyroid Antibodies

Do you have Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism? If so, download my free resources such as foods you should be avoiding, the complete list of thyroid lab tests, and more here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease which means if you have this disease that your body is attacking and attempting to destroy your own thyroid gland. Up to 70-90% of people with hypothyroidism have Hashimoto's (even if you don't know about it!) and this is important because Hashimoto's is treated differently compared to regular hypothyroidism. There are 5 main natural therapies that you can use to potentially help halt this autoimmune damage in your body and help heal your thyroid gland. I've personally used these therapies on many patients and found them to be quite effective. But, before you use them, please realize that they may not ALL work for you. Each person is unique and the therapies that you need may differ from the therapies that I've listed here. 5 Natural ways to treat Hashimoto's include: #1. Changing your diet. - There are several diets that can help reduce inflammation in your body and may help treat Hashimoto's. I see a lot of people who are eating healthy foods but they are not eating the right types of healthy foods. Diets which can help Hashimoto's include: AIP diet, Elimination diet, low FODMAP's diet, and the gluten-free/dairy-free/soy-free diet. #2. Testosterone gel/cream. - Women with Hashimoto's tend to have low testosterone levels. Treating women who have low testosterone with testosterone can help improve the immune response and may also help with problems such as low libido and weight gain. You don't want to use more than necessary, but using even a small amount may help. #3. Vitamins and Minerals. - There are lots of potential vitamins that you can use, but I find the most success with Selenium, Zinc, and Vitamin D. These supplements are powerful regulators of the immune response and patients with Hashimoto's tend to be deficient in all 3. I recommend using a supplement like this one which contains all 3: https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ #4. Gut health. - We all know that gut health is important but instead of focusing on your general gut health I want to focus on 2 conditions that up to 50% of patients with Hashimoto's have and may not be aware of. These conditions are SIBO and SIFO. If you have these conditions (or any of the symptoms of these conditions) you must be treated as they may be causing inflammation and worsening the immune process in your body. #5. LDN. - Last on the list is LDN which stands for low dose naltrexone. LDN is thought to help your body by increasing endorphins which may help educate and balance your immune system. Anywhere from 40-60% of people with Hashimoto's may find some benefit by using LDN. LDN does require a prescription to get, however, so you will need to get this from your doctor. Why Hypothyroidism is Worse with Iron Deficiency

Download free thyroid resources here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Your thyroid function depends on how much iron you have. If you have low iron levels then your thyroid function may be compromised. This is especially important for people who have thyroid disease because they are very sensitive to even small changes in iron levels. And doctors are not conditioned to look at iron stores unless they find that you are anemic. But it is possible to be iron deficient even if you are not anemic and this deficiency CAN impact your thyroid negatively. Thyroid function and iron are linked in the following ways: - Low iron reduces the amount of thyroid hormone that your body can produce directly from your thyroid gland. - Low iron is associated with decreased T4 to T3 conversion. - Low iron is associated with low T3. - Low iron reduces the effectiveness of iodine supplementation. - As transferrin falls, your TSH rises. Testing for iron deficiency is actually quite easy and I recommend that all thyroid patients should consider testing for iron deficiency with the following lab tests: - Ferritin: Should be between 40 and 50 - TIBC: Should be in the middle of the reference range - Serum iron: Should be in the middle of the reference range - Percent saturation: Should be between 35 to 38% If these values are confusing then you can primarily stick just to ferritin. You don't necessarily need to order all of those other tests because ferritin is usually a good enough predictor of iron stores. If you find that you are deficient then you can supplement with iron using over the counter formulations. Most thyroid patients do better on liquid iron or very specific iron capsules. Thyroid Stimulating Exercises (+ Which Exercises to avoid)

Free thyroid downloads and resources here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here Can exercising help boost your thyroid? The short answer is yes, but only if you are doing it the RIGHT way. Too little exercise will have no benefit on your thyroid while overexercising may lower your free T3 and total T3. How does exercise benefit your thyroid? In 3 main ways: #1. It reduces your TSH and increases both T3 and T4 levels. - This is exactly what you want if you are hypothyroid. This combination of changes indicates that your thyroid is able to work on its own. #2. It reduces inflammation. - Reducing inflammation can indirectly help your thyroid by improving how much T3 you can create through T4 to T3 conversion. This is also helpful if you have autoimmunity from conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. #3. It improves your metabolism. - Exercising can also improve your metabolism. Your thyroid controls about 60% of your daily caloric burn so increasing this value up to normal is incredibly important, especially if you are interested in weight loss. If you have thyroid issues you should also be careful to overexercise. Overexercising can increase your cortisol levels and lower your free T3 and total T3 levels. You'll know if you are overexercising based on how you feel (more in the video). You should stick to moderate intensity exercises as well as sustained low-intensity exercises. Exercises such as yoga, strength training, walking, and moderate intensity exercises are ideal for most people. 10 Foods to Avoid if you have Thyroid Problems (Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's)

You can download the PDF copy of this resource here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here The foods that you eat can either positively or negatively impact your thyroid. This video is all about avoiding certain foods which have been scientifically proven to inhibit thyroid function in some way. The list of foods to avoid if you have thyroid disease includes: #1. Refined sugar - Sugar can cause insulin resistance which can negatively impact thyroid function. #2. *Gluten - Up to 2-5% of people with Hashimoto's also have Celiac disease. In addition, many more have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. #3. *Dairy - In a recent study, 8 weeks of removing dairy caused a reduction in TSH levels among patients with Hashimoto's. #4. Alcohol - Alcohol is cytotoxic to thyroid cells and suppresses both TSH and TRH. #5. Trans-Fat - Trans fat can negatively impact thyroid hormone production. #6. Industrial seed oils and fats - These fats may cause inflammation which reduces T4 to T3 conversion. #7. Highly processed Soy - Soy can theoretically block iodine uptake into your thyroid gland and reduce thyroid hormone absorption. #8. Frozen and highly processed foods - Frozen and highly processed foods contain preservatives which may block or interfere with thyroid function. #9. *Legumes/Beans - Beans and legumes contain lectins and goitrogens which may block thyroid function. #10. *Coffee - Coffee can suppress TSH and reduce T3 and T4 levels after consumption. Foods marked with an * have special conditions which should be considered (more in the video or found directly on the blog post). Thyroid Self Test: 4 Ways to Check your Thyroid at Home

Is it possible to test your thyroid at home? The answer is yes. If you watched the video you can download the free resource I mention in it here: https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ The only problem with testing your thyroid at home is that the tests available are not quite as accurate as blood tests. Having said that they can still give you very important information. My recommendation is to use these tests in conjunction with your lab tests to give you a better idea as to what is happening with your thyroid. Here are the 4 ways you can test your thyroid at home: #1. Check your symptoms. The first thing you can do is check and monitor your symptoms! Your symptoms give you an idea as to how well your thyroid is working. The worse your symptoms are the worse your thyroid is. You can also check and monitor them over time. #2. Check your basal body temperature. Your body temperature tracks with thyroid function because your thyroid helps control and regulate about 60% of the heat your body produces. You can easily track your temperature each morning. #3. Check your resting heart rate. Your resting heart rate is also controlled (in part) by your thyroid gland. A low resting heart rate is an indication of a sluggish thyroid while a rapid heart rate is indicative of an overactive thyroid. #4. The thyroid "swallow" test. You can use this test to monitor the physical appearance of your thyroid. The only downside to this strategy is that it doesn't tell you how well your thyroid is working. Other tests available: #1. Thyroid function lab tests (requires a prescription from a doctor) My recommendation is to ALWAYS get thyroid lab tests if they are available (see the video for the complete list of labs you need). #2. Thyroid ultrasound (requires a prescription from a doctor) A thyroid ultrasound can help you look at the physical characteristics of your thyroid gland but doesn't necessarily tell you how well it is functioning. How Free T4 Changes with Different Thyroid Medication

Free T4 is an important measurement which gives you an idea how well your thyroid is functioning. But what's interesting about this value is that it changes based on what type of thyroid medication you are taking. You need to understand how these changes manifest to know if you are on the right track. How T4 changes with thyroid medication: - On T4 only thyroid medication. Free T4 tends to increase when taking thyroid medication such as Levothyroxine and Synthroid. This makes perfect sense! You can use your free T4 as a measure to determine if you are taking enough medication. As you take more medication you should see your free T4 increase. - On NDT thyroid medication. On NDT some people experience a dramatic drop in free T4 while others may see a slight increase. How you respond to NDT will depend on your unique biochemistry. - On T3 only thyroid medication. All people taking T3 only thyroid medication will see a drop in free T4 if their dose is high enough! Evaluating your free T4 is important if you are taking T4 only thyroid medication and becomes less important as you use other types of thyroid medication. Thyroid Symptoms in Men (+ Low Testosterone Symptoms)

Men with hypothyroidism tend to have similar but different symptoms when compared to women. The difference in symptoms stems from the impact that your thyroid has on testosterone. Testosterone, as it turns out, is much more important for men when compared to women. Even minor changes in testosterone can lead to numerous side effects which are separate from hypothyroidism. So, in a sense, men get both the symptoms of hypothyroidism AND low testosterone. Men with hypothyroidism commonly present with any or all of the following symptoms: - Increase in fatigue or decreased energy levels - Decreased libido/sex drive and other changes in sexual function including erectile dysfunction - Inability to build muscle mass or decreased strength - Unexplained weight gain or inability to lose weight despite using therapies that have worked in the past - Changes in mood ranging from feeling "down" to depression In addition to these symptoms men usually present with 1 or more of the following general symptoms of hypothyroidism: - Constipation or change in bowel movements trending towards constipation - Dry skin or changes in skin texture - Other mood changes including anxiety - Difficulty with sleeping or insomnia - Inability to tolerate cold temperatures - Issues with fertility - Muscle aches/pains, joint pain and/or back pain - Difficulty with concentration, decreased attention span and "brain fog" If you have any of these symptoms then you will want to test the following labs: - TSH - Free t3 - Free t4 - Reverse t3 - Total testosterone - Free testosterone - Sex hormone binding globulin Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. TSH Levels During Pregnancy: Healthy Ranges by Trimester

TSH is a marker of thyroid function and it's incredibly important if you are pregnant. During pregnancy, the thyroid gland enlarges and must produce enough thyroid hormone for both you and your child. If you can't produce enough thyroid hormone then your child may suffer from developmental issues, a low birthweight and potentially a lower than normal IQ. Because of this, doctors recommend that thyroid function be monitored very closely during pregnancy. It also means that the standard "healthy" ranges must be altered during pregnancy to match the increase in demand of thyroid hormone. This means there are new reference ranges for the TSH and other thyroid hormones. You can find these levels below: Standard TSH levels during Pregnancy: First trimester: 0.1 to 2.5 mU/L Second trimester: 0.2 to 3.0 mU/L Third trimester: 0.2 to 3.0 mU/L Normal non-pregnant TSH range: 0.5 to 4.0 mU/L (with newer studies showing that a healthy TSH is probably less than 2.5 (2) and maybe even closer to 1.0 mU/L (3)) My personal recommendation: First trimester: 0.1 to 0.5 mU/L Second trimester: 0.2 to 1.0 mU/L Third trimester: 0.2 to 1.0 mU/L Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - For thyroid hormone production and conversion: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/t3-conversion-booster/ - For hair loss: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-hair-regrowth-complex/ - For weight management: https://www.restartmed.com/product/gut-bomb-350-billion/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/functional-fuel-complete/ - For gut health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/ultra-biotic-x100/ - For energy and adrenal health: https://www.restartmed.com/product/thyroid-adrenal-reset-complex/ + https://www.restartmed.com/product/power-b-complex/ I'm Dr. Westin Childs and I focus on thyroid health, hormone balance, and weight loss. How Long Does it Take Thyroid Medication to Work?

How long does it take thyroid medication to work? That's the question we will be exploring in today's video. The short answer? About 60% of people will experience some improvement within 4-6 weeks of taking their medication. Another 20% will experience symptomatic relief even sooner and the last 20% may experience symptomatic improvement up to 8+ weeks after starting their medication. Why does it take so long? It has to do with how thyroid hormone works once it's in your body. Thyroid hormone has to interact with your cells and change genetic transcription and this process takes time. Other factors such as your starting dose, whether or not you are taking T3, and your lifestyle can also all impact how quickly your medication will work. Those people who take T3 medications often experience improvement faster than those who take T4 only thyroid medication. Can Hypothyroidism Cause High Blood Sugar?

The answer is yes. Actually, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to high blood sugar. This stems from a condition known as insulin resistance in which your cells become resistant to the effects of insulin. Insulin is supposed to help your body take up glucose and utilize it for energy. If it can't then the blood sugar will build up in your blood and you will experience high blood sugar. This condition stems from ANY disorder of thyroid function including both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. And this is also true of thyroid medications. It's not the medications themselves which cause blood sugar but how much you are taking of them. It's possible for thyroid medication to both hurt or help your blood sugar, depending on your dose. In addition to this, hypothyroid patients also suffer from a high cortisol if they do not use an adequate dose of thyroid medication. High cortisol leads to further insulin resistance and can exacerbate high blood sugar. Because of this, if you have hypothyroidism and high blood sugar it's important that you address both your cortisol AND your thyroid function. Failure to address both of these can lead to persistent high blood sugar, insulin resistance, and weight loss resistance. How to Stop Thyroid Eyebrow Hair Loss

Thyroid dysfunction can lead to both general hair loss and eyebrow hair loss. Eyebrow hair loss can be particularly troubling because it can cause considerable distress and issues with your appearance. It's important to know that your eyebrows are a sensitive marker of thyroid function in your body. They are often the first sign of thyroid disease and can be the last symptom to improve once you improve your thyroid. 6 steps to improve thyroid eyebrow hair loss include: #1. Take thyroid medication! (If necessary) #2. Ensure that your thyroid medication is actually working. #3. Take hair regrowth supplements (this works for both your hair and eyebrows). #4. Take thyroid enhancing supplements #5. Look at your iron/ferritin #6. Consider switching thyroid medications By following these steps you should be able to improve your eyebrow hair growth and improve your thyroid function at the same time. Always remember that there can be other causes of eyebrow hair loss which are unrelated to your thyroid so if these strategies don't work you may need to look into those as well. Can Hashimoto's Actually Be Reversed/Cured?

The quick answer to the question: Yes, but only in about 10% of the population (based on my estimates and experience). And by reversed I am talking about a 100% complete remission where you are not taking thyroid medication, where your thyroid antibodies are zero, your weight is normalized, and you do not have any symptoms of hypothyroidism. Other people can experience anywhere from minor to major improvements with natural therapies, but the degree that they will improve depends on their individual circumstance. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease which will eventually result in the complete destruction of your thyroid gland. In the conventional setting, most doctors do not do any treatment for Hashimoto's except using thyroid medications and/or surgery (in some cases). This means that it's up to you to find the treatment you need to fix your condition. If you are interested in reversing Hashimoto's or in treating your condition naturally then you will have more luck getting treatment from an integrative or functional medicine doctor when compared to a primary care doctor or an endocrinologist. Radioactive Iodine Treatment: What to Expect Afterward

Radioactive iodine treatment is a medical treatment used to destroy your thyroid gland. It's used to treat conditions such as hyperthyroidism to help reduce the amount of thyroid hormone that your body produces. As you can imagine, destroying your thyroid gland does come with some consequences. I want to talk about those consequences and what you should expect if you get this procedure done. 6 Things to expect after Radioactive iodine treatment: #1. You are going to be radioactive. - Yes! It is true. You will be radioactive for about 5-7 days after your procedure which means you shouldn't be close to other people for that time. You can't kiss others, prepare food for others, share a toilet, and so on. This fades in about 5-7 days so don't let it freak you out. #2. You may gain weight. - This is another big one. There is about a 30% chance that you will gain weight after your procedure. Studies have tested and looked at people who undergo RAI and they have found that those who are overweight before their procedure tend to gain more weight than those who are not. Just be aware that this may happen to you. #3. You will need to (most likely) be on medication - And by medication, I am referring to thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone (such as levothyroxine or Synthroid) is required after your procedure because of the damage done to your thyroid gland. Not everyone will need to be on medication afterward, but the vast majority will. #4. You may experience other thyroid symptoms - You might also experience other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, hair loss, and cold body temperatures. These symptoms stem from a lack of sufficient treatment by thyroid hormone and you should watch out for them! #5. You should consider yourself "hypothyroid" - This is a subtle but important point. After your procedure, you will be considered hypothyroid, even if you were hyperthyroid BEFORE your procedure. When you destroy your thyroid gland your body can no longer produce thyroid hormone and your diagnosis should change as well. #6. Men may have short-term infertility afterward - If you are a man then you should know that you may suffer from reduced sperm counts for 2 years after your procedure. You can still bank your sperm before your procedure, though, so don't let it stop you from getting the procedure if necessary. #49 How Thyroid Medication Changes your Blood Pressure

Can taking thyroid medication alter your blood pressure? The answer is absolutely. It doesn't happen all the time, but certain types of thyroid medication can lead to a rise in your blood pressure. Your cardiac tissue (heart cells) have different thyroid receptors when compared to most other cells. As a result, they are particularly sensitive to T3 thyroid hormone. When they come into contact with T3 it can act to increase the force of contraction of your heart which increases both your heart rate and your blood pressure. What can you do about it? #1. Pay attention to your dose (if your dose is too high you may need to lower your medication). #2. Take your dose of medication several times throughout the day. - By splitting up your dose throughout the day you can slow down how much thyroid hormone hits your heart. #3. Consider switching to a different thyroid medication. - Lastly, if you can't find any relief from the steps above then you may need to switch medications entirely. Switching from one class of thyroid medication to another may work or switching to a different class entirely may be necessary. #48 NP Thyroid vs Armour Thyroid: Cost & Ingredient Differences

NP Thyroid is a form of natural desiccated thyroid hormone which is similar but different than Armour thyroid. Both medications contain the same active ingredients but they differ in the inactive ingredients. This small difference can greatly impact how you feel when you use or take these medications. Armour thyroid contains the following ingredients: Triiodothyronine (active ingredient) Thyroxine (active ingredient) Calcium stearate Dextrose Microcrystalline cellulose (May cause reactions in some people Sodium starch glycolate Opadry white Minor amounts of calcitonin, T1, T2, and proteins NP thyroid contains the following ingredients: Triiodothyronine (active ingredient) Thyroxine (active ingredient) Calcium stearate Dextrose monohydrate Maltodextrin Mineral oil Minor amounts of calcitonin, T1, T2, and proteins You can see from the list that NP thyroid has slightly fewer ingredients and may be better tolerated for some people. In addition, NP thyroid is also cheaper when compared to Armour thyroid. #47 List of Thyroid Medication Names (By Hormone Content)

If you are confused about thyroid medication names then this is the video for you. In this video, I break down how various thyroid medications differ from one another and what thyroid hormones that they contain. There are two main types of thyroid hormones: T4 and T3. Thyroid medications contain both or just one or the other of these hormones which impact how they work in your body. T4 only thyroid medications include: - Synthroid (Brand name) - Levothyroxine (Generic) - Tirosint (Brand name - special in that it only has 4 total ingredients) - Levoxyl - Unithroid - Euthyrox - Levo-T - Levothroid *T4 only thyroid medications MUST be activated by your body in order to be used. NDT (Natural Desiccated thyroid hormone) medications include: - Armour Thyroid (Brand name) - NP Thyroid (Generic for Armour Thyroid) - WP Thyroid - Nature-Throid - Thyrolar *NDT medications contain a combination of T4 and T3 thyroid hormone. T3 only thyroid medications: - Cytomel (Brand name) - Liothyronine (Generic) - SR T3 (Sustained release T3) *T3 thyroid medications come pre-activated and are the most powerful types of thyroid medications. #46 5 Causes of Thyroid Pain & How to Treat Them

Thyroid pain is never a normal symptom and the presence of this symptom is an indication that something is wrong. Believe it or not, thyroid pain is not a common symptom even though thyroid disorders are quite common. Almost all conditions which result in thyroid pain do so because of inflammation in the thyroid gland itself. This inflammation could be from your own immune system, from an infection, or from trauma. With this in mind, let's talk about conditions that cause thyroid pain: #1. Subactue thyroiditis. - This is the most common cause of thyroid pain among patients and is usually caused by a viral infection. #2. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - Rarely, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (which is an autoimmune condition) can cause thyroid pain. But most people with this condition do NOT have thyroid pain. #3. Lymphadenopathy - Lymphadenopathy refers to a condition in which your lymph nodes are enlarged and sensitive. While this isn't exactly thyroid pain, this condition can be confused with thyroid pain because lymph nodes are very close to your thyroid gland. #4. Thyroid Cancer - Rarely, thyroid cancer can also cause thyroid pain. Don't let this freak you out, though, because most thyroid cancers do NOT cause thyroid pain. #5. Postpartum Thyroiditis - Lastly, some cases of postpartum thyroiditis can cause thyroid pain as well. This is very uncommon, but it's worth considering if you recently had a baby and you have thyroid pain. #45 Thyroid Supplements For Weight Loss: Which Work & Which Don't

Can you use thyroid supplements to help you with weight loss? The answer is maybe and that it really depends. Some supplements work better than others, but you should never plan on only using supplements if your goal is weight loss. Why? Because it usually takes a lot more than just 1 or 2 supplements to help you lose all of your weight and feel back to normal. This should go without saying, but just keep it in mind. Having said that, there are certain categories of supplements which can help thyroid patients with weight loss. These categories include: #1. Supplements that increase T3. - T3 is king when it comes to weight loss. Any supplement which helps to promote more T3 may, therefore, help with weight loss. Certain supplements such as selenium, zinc, guggul, and vitamin A can help more than others. #2. Supplements that support your metabolism. - One of the most important things you can do to help with weight loss is enhance your metabolism. Certain supplements, such as protein powder, can improve your metabolism which may help. #3. Supplements which improve your gut function. - Probiotics, prebiotics, and enzymes can all potentially help with weight loss by influencing your gut microbiome. The bacteria in your gut influence how many calories you absorb and can even alter your hormones. In addition to using these supplements, you also want to make sure that you avoid certain supplements as well. Pretty much any supplement which sounds gimmicky is something that you will want to avoid. These supplements can actually do more harm than good, especially if you have thyroid disease. #44 Can Hypothyroidism Be Cured Permanently?

The answer is that it really depends. Sometimes hypothyroidism is curable and sometimes it isn't, it depends on the cause of your condition. Before we talk about these conditions you need to understand the difference between a cure and a treatment. All forms of hypothyroidism can be treated but when I talk about a cure I am talking about a therapy which will completely heal your body. All types of hypothyroidism are treatable but not all are curable. Conditions that cause hypothyroidism include... Hypothyroidism from Hashimoto's thyroiditis: - The most common cause of hypothyroidism is from Hashimoto's which is both treatable and curable. Most people do not realize a complete cure but they can almost always improve their condition, symptoms, and antibody levels. Hypothyroidism from nutrient deficiencies: - If your thyroid dysfunction is caused by a nutrient deficiency then there is a good chance that it can be cured. Simply taking the nutrient you are deficient in may be enough to cure your condition. Common nutrients causing hypothyroidism include iodine deficiency, selenium deficiency, zinc deficiency, and tyrosine deficiency. Hypothyroidism from pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction: - Hypothyroidism from brain-related issues are usually very difficult to treat. If your hypothyroidism is caused by brain damage (from trauma) then it is unlikely that you will be able to cure your condition. If it's caused by PTSD then it may be treatable. Hypothyroidism from RAI or thyroid removal: - This form of hypothyroidism is NOT curable. It can be treated with thyroid medication but it cannot be cured (at least not at this time). #42 These Supplements Block Thyroid Medication Absorption

Do supplements help or hurt your thyroid? Many supplements can actually improve your thyroid function but they can also interfere with thyroid medication absorption! If you are taking supplements and if you take thyroid medication then this information is important for you. Certain medications and over the counter supplements can act to block or bind up thyroid medication like Levothyroxine or Synthroid. If you take supplements together with your thyroid medication then you may be limiting how much thyroid medication can actually enter into your body. The most important supplements which inhibit thyroid hormone absorption include: - Iron - Calcium - Cholestyramine - Aluminum - Cimetidine - Sucralfate - Iodine - Selenium - Magnesium - Zinc - Fiber - Caffeine - Antacids If you are taking any of these supplements (or medications) then you need to make sure that you don't take them around the same time as your thyroid medication. In addition, the time of day that you take your medication and whether or not you take it on an empty stomach all impact absorption! #41 Is Using Iodine Safe for your Thyroid?

Is using iodine safe for your thyroid? In this video, I discuss all of the potential risks associated with using iodine. Iodine is an essential nutrient required for thyroid function in your body, there's no question about that. But does using high doses of iodine help or hurt you? Will using iodine worsen your thyroid function? It turns out that using high doses of iodine may be associated with an increase in certain conditions. 4 conditions that may result from excessive thyroid dosing include: #1. Thyroid cancer. - Studies have shown that iodine use is associated with a rise in cancer rates. This doesn't mean that iodine causes thyroid cancer but it is worth considering. #2. Autoimmune thyroiditis. - This shouldn't be controversial, but there is emerging evidence that taking iodine can increase your risk of developing autoimmune thyroiditis. #3. Fetal hypothyroidism. - The fetal thyroid is more sensitive to iodine when compared to the thyroid gland of the mother. Using high doses of iodine can impact your fetus more than your thyroid. #4. Iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. - Several conditions put you at increased risk for developing hyperthyroidism after taking high doses of iodine. In my opinion, it's safer to use low doses of iodine to start and then increase your dose if necessary. Somewhere between 100mcg and 300mcg is probably a safe place to start. #40 What is a Normal Free T4?

What is a normal free T4? If you are looking for a quick answer then somewhere in the top 50% of the reference range is a good starting point but it is much more nuanced than that. Various other conditions, even taking thyroid medication, can impact your free T4 and change up what would be considered normal. In addition, because T4 is a hormone, we also need to establish the difference between a healthy and a normal level. A healthy free T4 is one that would be seen in people who are active, healthy, and have no thyroid problems. But what does your free T4 actually mean? Free t4 is a measure of the number of free T4 which is available in your blood. Free T4 simply means that the T4 hormone we are measuring is not bound up by proteins and is available for your body to use. But, even though it is available for use doesn't mean that it is active. In order to be active, free T4 must be turned into T3. Luckily, we have the ability to check both free T4 and free T3 to evaluate how well this is happening. So what is a normal free T4? It really depends on your situation. If you are not taking thyroid medication then an optimal free T4 is in the top 50% of the reference range. If you are taking T4 only thyroid medication like Synthroid or levothyroxine, then a healthy free T4 is in the top 30% of the reference range. If you are taking T3 medication such as NDT or Liothyronine/Cytomel, then it may be normal for your free T4 to drop. In this case, a healthy free T4 may be in the lower 50% of the reference range. In this case, it's often wise to look at total t3 and free T3 over free T4.
