A Root Cause Approach to Hyperthyroidism and Graves' Disease

A Root Cause Approach to Hyperthyroidism and Graves' Disease | This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Paleovalley The thyroid gland is a small gland located in your neck that is part of your endocrine or hormonal system. It produces two major thyroid hormones, and the overproduction of these hormones is termed hyperthyroidism. Sixty to seventy percent of individuals with hyperthyroidism suffer from an autoimmune condition called Graves' disease. So, what is driving these issues and how can that information be used to treat the root causes of hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease? In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss how they work with patients to treat the root causes of hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease. They discuss topics including environmental toxin exposure, the role of gut health in driving autoimmune disease, using thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and much more. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Paleovalley. Rupa Health is a place for Functional Medicine practitioners to access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, Great Plains, and more. How The Intelligence Of Plants and Animals Can Help Us Reclaim Our Health with Fred Provenza

How The Intelligence Of Plants and Animals Can Help Us Reclaim Our Health | This episode is brought to you by Joovv, BiOptimizers, and Primal Kitchen If we take the time to be quiet, still, and curious, there’s an immeasurable amount of knowledge to be gained from our natural surroundings. In watching grazing animals and their food choices, we see they know how to personalize their nutritional intake to eat plants that match their exact needs. Though many of us have lost our innate wisdom to eat intuitively, upping our intake of phytochemicals and reducing processed foods means we can recalibrate our cravings to lean towards what we truly need. Vitamins and minerals often get most of the attention when it comes to eating for nutrient density, but phytochemicals are the real hidden talent for optimizing plant, animal, and human health. Unfortunately, modern agriculture has actually damaged the phytochemical richness of our food, by breeding for yield, appearance, and hardiness. I enjoyed sitting down with Fred Provenza in this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about all this and so much more. Fred grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us about Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-written with Michel Meuret). He has published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals. This episode is brought to you by Joovv, BiOptimizers, and Primal Kitchen. Prevent And Reverse Heart Disease Using Functional Medicine with Dr. Cindy Geyer

Prevent And Reverse Heart Disease Using Functional Medicine | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and RupaHealth Research shows that adhering to four simple behaviors can prevent 80% of heart disease. They are: not smoking, exercising 3.5 hours a week, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. Unfortunately, fewer than 3% of Americans meet this criteria. And while traditional medicine relies mainly on medication to treat and prevent heart disease, we know that the way you eat, how much you exercise, how you manage stress, and minimizing your exposure to environmental toxins can all be much more effective levers for treating and reducing the risk of heart disease. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Cindy Geyer to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating heart disease. They dive into the root causes of inflammation, the role of cholesterol, insulin, and gut health in driving heart disease, and much more. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is a recently elected fellow of ACLM. Dr. Geyer has been a core faculty member at The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) for 20 years, teaching physicians and other healthcare professionals how to use food and lifestyle to address health concerns in their own lives and those of their patients. A clinician, educator, and avid hiker, she is passionate about collaborative approaches to health and wellness: from the integrative team model in working with individual patients, to community partnerships that together can affect healthy changes in the places people live and work. This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and RupaHealth. When you sign up to ButcherBox, you’ll get 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan salmon free in your first box plus $10 off. In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Geyer discuss: The four basic characteristics that predict low risk of heart disease What causes inflammation? Traditional vs. Functional Medicine approaches to testing for, diagnosing, and treating heart disease Why the quality and size of cholesterol matters The relationship between poor metabolic health and heart disease The role of insulin and gut microbiome health in driving cardiovascular disease How environmental toxins drive heart disease Patient cases that Drs. How to Rewire Your Brain For Sleep with Dr. Andrew Huberman

How to Rewire Your Brain For Sleep | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, BiOptimizers, and Cozy Earth When I was in medical school, they taught us we can’t regenerate brain cells. If you stayed up too late studying or did drugs, you’d lose precious connections and that was that. Now, luckily, we know that isn’t true. There are multiple ways to encourage the plasticity of the brain at any age, to enhance everything from sleep to learning. Most people don’t realize that sleep is a keystone of health. When we’re sleep-deprived, it’s really hard to eat well or to have the energy to exercise. It’s hard to think straight. It’s even hard to stay in a good mood or have a positive outlook on life. Understanding the way the brain and our neurotransmitters work means we can hack our sleep to not just feel amazing but to level up our focus, skills, and knowledge. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Dr. Andrew Huberman about the body-brain connection and how small actions can have huge payoffs for our brain health. Dr. Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function, and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills, and cognitive functioning. Dr. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, which is given to the scientist making the largest discoveries in the study of vision. His lab’s most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, BiOptimizers, and Cozy Earth. Are Parasites Driving Your Autoimmune Or Gut Issues? with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Are Parasites Driving Your Autoimmune Or Gut Issues? | This episode is sponsored by Thrive Market and Rupa Health You may be surprised to learn that having a parasite, in and of itself, is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, our gut microbiome is made up of more than 500 different species of microbes, including various types of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Some of them help us, but others are harmful. Parasitic infection can result in an individual experiencing a range of symptoms from digestive issues to muscle ache, joint pain, skin rashes, and more; it can also signal issues with a weakened immune system. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss how parasites can influence our overall health, and why they sometimes trigger autoimmune disease, gut imbalance, and much more. The Harmful Effects Of Weedkiller (Glyphosate) On Our Health And Our Future with Stephanie Seneff

The Harmful Effects of Weedkiller (Glyphosate) On Our Health And Our Future | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and TrueDark The statistics on glyphosate, the world’s most commonly used pesticide, are pretty grim. Billions of pounds have been applied globally since the 70s. In the US, though we’re only 4% of the world’s population, we use 20% of the world’s supply annually. Then, we wonder why our rates of chronic disease are so much higher than other countries. The evidence against the use of glyphosate keeps mounting, yet it’s still legally drenching our food supply. I try to be as good as I can about eating organic, high-quality food, and my glyphosate test revealed I was still in the 50th percentile. Studies have linked glyphosate to cancer, endocrine disruption, infertility, immune dysfunction, liver and kidney damage, and disruption of the microbiome. And not only is glyphosate harming human health and the health of our future generations, it’s also destroying our ecosystems. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I dive into all-things glyphosate with Stephanie Seneff. Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has a bachelor's degree from MIT in Biology with a minor in Food and Nutrition Science, and a master’s degree, an engineer’s degree, and a PhD degree, all from MIT, in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Her recent interests have focused on the role of toxic chemicals and micronutrient deficiencies in health and disease, with a special emphasis on the pervasive herbicide, glyphosate, and the mineral, sulfur. Since 2008, she has authored over three dozen peer-reviewed journal papers on these topics. She is the author of a new book on glyphosate titled Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate is Destroying Our Health and the Environment (July 2021). This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and TrueDark. A Functional Medicine Approach To The Root Causes Of Endometriosis with Dr. Cindy Geyer

A Functional Medicine Approach To The Root Causes Of Endometriosis | This episode is sponsored by Paleovalley and Athletic Greens Endometriosis is a very prevalent, but often difficult to diagnose, condition in which cells that normally line the uterus find their way into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to a range of symptoms including heavy, painful periods, painful intercourse, infertility, hormonal issues, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Cindy Geyer to discuss how they use the principles of Functional Medicine to get to the root causes of endometriosis. They discuss why addressing chronic inflammation and supporting gut health are primary focuses when treating patients, genetic and lifestyle factors that can lead to endometriosis, and much more. How Sleep Apnea Drives Weight Gain, Memory Loss, High Blood Pressure, ADHD, And More

How Sleep Apnea Drives Weight Gain, Memory Loss, High Blood Pressure, ADHD, And More | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox Sleep is a major cornerstone for an energetic, joyful, healthy life. Unfortunately, millions of people are affected by a condition called sleep apnea and an estimated 80% of cases go undiagnosed. Sleep apnea is an extreme form of sleep deprivation where you wake up several times throughout the night. You can’t sleep, you can’t breathe, and as a result, you lack oxygen. You don’t even realize you’re waking up throughout the night. This lack of sleep drives weight gain and blood sugar imbalances. It can also raise your risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and more. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center, Dr. George Papanicolaou, Dr. Elizabeth Boham, and Maggie Ward, about patients they have treated for sleep apnea. They share cases on issues ranging from anxiety to low libido to high blood pressure in which sleep apnea was a contributing factor. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. Maggie Ward, MS, RD, LDN is the Nutrition Director at The UltraWellness Center. Maggie holds a master’s degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University which focuses on using whole foods for holistic Nutrition Therapy. In addition, she completed her requirements to become a registered dietitian at Westchester Medical Center in NY. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center team in 2008, Maggie worked at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York providing nutrition counseling to children and families dealing with HIV. She also taught at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan and other sites throughout New York City, teaching nutritionally focused cooking classes for children and adults. Much of her focus is on food allergies, digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, Pediatrics and Sports Nutrition. Maggie has been counseling individuals, families and business groups on therapeutic diets to address various health concerns for more than 15 years. Her ongoing clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine uses a systems biology approach when working with those who suffer from chronic and acute conditions to help them find their path to healing. She has a passion for cooking and reconnecting people with their potential to heal using whole, organic and local foods. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox. How The Most Important Superfood You've Never Heard About Will Rejuvenate Your Immune System | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, TrueDark, and Uqora It seems like everywhere we look these days, there’s chronic disease. Our bodies are extremely intelligent, so why are they acting so dumb and having so many dysfunctions? Using the lens of Functional Medicine, we can see that a disease is so much more than its location. With inflammation smoldering throughout the body in many people, we need to zero in on the immune system, how it’s functioning, and what factors are negatively impacting it. We’re in an exciting time for research in this area, as we continue to learn how to fix the problems behind an aging immune system. There’s no better person to talk to about this topic than the one and only Dr. Jeff Bland. Dr. Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature’s greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Jeff is advocating for the power of immuno-rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, Jeff is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. Jeff’s career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. Jeff then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers. This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, TrueDark, and Uqora. They are often associated with an aura, light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, and severe throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. And migraines can be caused by many different factors. This is where Functional Medicine comes in. Functional Medicine is medicine by cause; not by symptom. It helps us discover the underlying triggers of disease. How This Doctor Reversed Her Multiple Sclerosis With Food And Lifestyle

How This Doctor Reversed Her Multiple Sclerosis With Food And Lifestyle | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens In 2000, Dr. Terry Wahls was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. By 2003, she had to start using a wheelchair because of the progression of this disease. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life. Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. To do this, she adopted the nutrient-rich Paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. She went from almost being bedridden to completing an 18-mile bicycle tour. Dr. Hyman sat down with Dr. Wahls to discuss the types of plant foods, proteins, and fats that Dr. Wahls incorporates into her daily diet as well as the supplements she recommends. They also explore the lifestyle changes that she made including meditation, stress reduction, movement, and much more. Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. The Future Of Medicine: Precision And Personalization | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, BiOptimizers, and HigherDOSE It’s an exciting time to be in medicine, as we watch technological advances completely change the way we understand the body. There are revolutions happening on multiple levels: the “omics” revolution that looks at the interactions of the genome, microbiome, metabolome, transcriptome, and more; the digitization of data that involves tracking our biology through things like the Oura ring or a continuous glucose monitor; and the systems biology medicine movement that is reframing the way we look at preventing disease and healing the body at the root. I was excited to sit down with Dr. Daniel Kraft to talk about a different vision that will integrate this type of information into the future of healthcare. Dr. Kraft is a Stanford and Harvard-trained physician-scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. He is currently serving as the Chair of the XPRIZE Pandemic Alliance Task Force. Underweight, Overtired, And Malnourished: How To Get Your Health Back On Track with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Underweight, Overtired, And Malnourished: How To Get Your Health Back On Track | This episode is sponsored by Tushy and Cozy Earth The sad reality is that Americans suffer from massive nutritional deficiencies and our food is primarily to blame. These nutrient deficiencies are showing up in underweight and overweight people alike. Aside from a reduction in nutrient density in our food, we don’t eat enough whole, unprocessed foods and instead have diets rich in refined sugars and starches. And even when we are eating the right foods, our bodies sometimes have trouble digesting and absorbing the necessary nutrients from those foods. Simply put, low nutritional status equals a poorly functioning metabolism. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the issue of malnutrition and what that means for our overall health. They dive into how they diagnose and treat the most prevalent nutrient and vitamin deficiencies and Dr. Boham shares cases of patients she has treated who have difficulty putting on and maintaining weight. How To Start A Meditation Practice And Create Healthy Habits

How To Start A Meditation Practice And Create Healthy Habits | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market Meditation is now commonly accepted for its range of benefits, yet many of us still struggle with making it a regular practice in our daily lives. And this doesn’t just happen with meditation. The good news is having trouble changing habits is not about a lack of willpower or discipline. Understanding How The Microbiome Affects Every Aspect Of Your Health with Dr. Emeran Mayer

Understanding How The Microbiome Affects Every Aspect Of Your Health | This episode is brought to you by Joovv, ButcherBox, and TrueDark There’s a foundational piece of Functional Medicine that I find surprises many conventional health practitioners: it’s that the health of our gut impacts every other part of the body—even the brain. There are several reasons for this. When working correctly, our gut digests our food and absorbs nutrients so we can have energy and vitality. It eliminates toxins and fights pathogens. It’s also the home of trillions of microorganisms that aid in these processes and do so much more, like manage inflammation and produce neurotransmitters. I was excited to talk to Dr. Emeran Mayer on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, all about nurturing the microbiome to support whole-body health and fight the epidemic of chronic disease. Dr. Emeran Mayer is the author of the recently released book The Gut-Immune Connection as well as The Mind-Gut Connection. He has studied brain-body interactions for the last forty years and is the executive director of the G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience, and the founding director of the UCLA Brain Gut Microbiome Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past twenty-five years, and he is considered a pioneer and world leader in the area of brain-gut microbiome interactions and its clinical implications. This episode is brought to you by Joovv, ButcherBox, and TrueDark. When you sign up to ButcherBox, you’ll get 2 lbs of wild-caught Alaskan salmon free in your first box plus $10 off. Is Lactose Intolerance Causing Your Gut Issues? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Is Lactose Intolerance Causing Your Gut Issues? | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and Paleovalley Most of us grew up hearing that dairy, and especially milk, is crucial for good health. In reality, dairy isn’t the vital source of calcium and strong bones that we were led to believe. Dairy can cause digestive problems for the majority of people with lactose intolerance, along with a range of other symptoms in people with and without lactose intolerance. These symptoms can include sinus issues, skin issues, headaches, autoimmune issues, and more. So how do you know if the lactose in dairy, or dairy overall, is a problem for you? In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss lactose intolerance and the myriad of ways dairy can cause digestive problems, and more. They also share how they work with patients to determine how dairy is being tolerated, and if it is the cause of other underlying health issues. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. Why All Meat Is Not Created Equal

Why All Meat Is Not Created Equal | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker There is a lot of controversy around whether meat is good or bad for our health but what if this is the wrong question to be asking? For example, grass-fed beef is extremely different from conventionally raised beef, and people buying grass-fed beef often have many other healthy habits that those buying Big Macs may not. Yet, nutrition research doesn’t take many of these variables into account. This is why when it comes to eating meat, like with all other foods, focusing on quality more than quantity is key to creating good health. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman talks with Chris Kresser about how the type of meat being eaten is an important focus missing from many big dietary studies and they break down the myths and stigmas around red meat consumption. Dr. Hyman also speaks with Fred Provenza about how the way we eat meat, along with what the animal eats, can make such a difference when it comes to our health. Chris Kresser is the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Cure. He is known for his in-depth research uncovering myths and misconceptions in modern medicine and providing natural health solutions with proven results. Chris was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, and his blog is one of the top-ranked natural health websites in the world. He recently launched Kresser Institute, an organization dedicated to reinventing healthcare and reversing chronic disease by training healthcare practitioners in functional and evolutionary medicine. Chris lives in Berkeley, California, with his wife and daughter. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us About Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-authored with Michel Meuret). He has also published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker. Why Modern Food Is Nutrient Depleted And How to Fix It with Dan Kittredge

Why Modern Food Is Nutrient Depleted And How to Fix It | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Athletic Greens, and Tushy It might be easy to assume that if you’re eating a whole foods diet rich in plants, you’re getting lots of nutrients. Compared to a processed diet, that’s true, but you might not be getting all the nutrition you’d expect from one carrot to the next. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could measure the nutrient density in our food, to pick the most optimal bunch of spinach or package of berries at the market? Thanks to the convergence of technology and nutrition science, we can. I was fascinated to talk to Dan Kittredge about intentionally eating for nutrient density on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dan Kittredge has been an organic farmer for more than 30 years and is the founder and executive director of the Bionutrient Food Association, a non-profit whose mission is to “increase quality in the food supply.” Known as one of the leading proponents of “nutrient density,” Dan works to demonstrate the connections between soil health, plant health, and human health. Out of these efforts was born the Real Food Campaign which has engineered a prototype of a hand-held consumer spectrometer designed to test nutrient density at point of purchase. Via the Bionutrient Meter, the goal is to empower consumers to choose for nutrient quality and thereby leverage economic incentives to drive full system regeneration. House Call Highlight: Wired and Tired: Fixing Adrenal Burnout with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

House Call Highlight: Wired and Tired: Fixing Adrenal Burnout | ButcherBox and Paleovalley You have likely heard the term “adrenal fatigue.” We commonly associate this term with the feelings of extreme fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and other physical symptoms that can occur from chronic stress. More accurately, we can look to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for the cause of these discomforts. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, and your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. All these are clues that you could have an imbalance of your HPA axis. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the signs of HPA axis dysfunction and how to support your HPA axis to reverse burnout. They also share patient cases that they have treated. Creating Health Outside Of The Doctor’s Office

Creating Health Outside Of The Doctor’s Office | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker Even before the coronavirus pandemic, we were facing a loneliness crisis in America. And we know that loneliness is correlated with a range of negative health outcomes. While this information can feel a bit depressing and overwhelming, it also offers insight into how we can make essential shifts towards a healthier and happier society. Community-based healthcare offers amazing potential for creating long-lasting improvements to individual health and has the ability to revolutionize healthcare. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Vivek Murthy about how loneliness is affecting us. He also speaks with Tawny Jones about why community-supported healthcare is so successful; they dive into the amazing benefits that a group approach can have when it comes to reversing disease. Dr. Vivek Murthy is the current Surgeon General of the United States and also served as the 19th Surgeon General between 2014-2017. As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he commanded a uniformed service of 6,600 public health officers globally. During his tenure, Dr. Murthy launched the TurnTheTide campaign, catalyzing a movement among health professionals to address the nation’s opioid crisis. He also issued the first Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, calling for expanded access to prevention and treatment and for recognizing addiction as a chronic illness, not a character flaw. In 2017, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and loneliness as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health, productivity, and happiness. His book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World was published in April 2020. Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic. For over 20 years, she has served as a well-respected leader, managing patient concentric care initiatives, creating value, and delivering results in quality improvement, efficient resource management, and health system optimization for various clinical departments. Currently, Tawny leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine where the goal is to establish the efficacy of functional medicine, demonstrate its cost-effectiveness, and its ability to improve health. Her passion for the promotion of preventative health services and community-based interventions gave impetus to the development of several clinical programs. The Functioning for LifeTMshared medical program for chronic disease management is her brainchild and has proven to be a successful model for addressing lifestyle and behavior change. Tawny is also on the African Employee Resource Group Steering Committee and is committed to helping minorities achieve their career goals. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker. What Our Kids Don’t Learn In School Is The Key To Their Success And Happiness with Goldie Hawn

What Our Kids Don’t Learn In School Is The Key To Their Success And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, BiOptimizers, and Tushy Throughout school, we learn arithmetic, biology, and how to read and write. But we don’t learn how to manage stress, understand our emotions, or connect the feelings in our bodies with the thoughts in our heads. Most of us don’t even really know how to breathe in a way that truly serves us. What if our children could learn these essential life skills early on? That’s the question Goldie Hawn asked herself after meeting kids all over the world and seeing their need for self-regulation. Today, I’m so excited to sit down with her to talk about the program she created and how it’s helped so many children grow into successful, grounded, emotionally intelligent adults. Goldie Hawn is an Academy Award-winning actress, producer, director, best-selling author, and true children’s advocate. She is the Founder of The Goldie Hawn Foundation, a public charity with a mission to equip children with the social and emotional skills they need to lead smarter, healthier, happier, and ultimately more productive lives. Alarmed by increases in school violence, youth depression and suicide, and the persistent failure of the education system to help children cope with increasingly stressful lives, Goldie started The Goldie Hawn Foundation in 2003, applying cutting edge scientific research to create educational programs that support the social and emotional development of children. Working with leading neuroscientists, educators, psychologists, and researchers, the Foundation developed MindUP™ an evidence-based curriculum and teaching model for grades K-12 that provide tools to help children self-regulate and understand their own emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, sharpen concentration, increase empathy, and improve academic performance. Is Brain Inflammation The Cause of Depression, Dementia, ADD, And Autism? A Functional Medicine Approach To Neuroinflammation with Dr. Todd LePine

Is Brain Inflammation The Cause of Depression, Dementia, ADD, And Autism? A Functional Medicine Approach To Neuroinflammation | This episode is sponsored by Thrive Market and Athletic Greens The emphasis on naming diseases is pervasive throughout medicine, and it is a primary obstacle to changing the way we do things and finding answers to our health problems. For instance, two brain disorders with two completely different names might have a lot more in common than you may otherwise think. The brain has an incredible connection to the immune system, called the glymphatic system, which helps it detoxify, receive valuable nutrients, and more. When the glymphatic system is threatened, neuroinflammation is created. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about inflammation in the brain. They discuss the many factors that can drive neuroinflammation, the range of conditions that are linked to brain inflammation, and how they work with patients to cool this inflammation. Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is sponsored by Thrive Market and Athletic Greens. Why Fasting And The Ketogenic Diet Can Help With Cancer Treatment and Prevention

Why Fasting And The Ketogenic Diet Can Help With Cancer Treatment and Prevention | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker The right diet is so imperative in preventing cancer or during the healing process. This is in large part because of the role insulin plays in cancer; insulin acts as a growth factor in the body, which is one of the reasons too much insulin leads to obesity. It’s also why insulin will support the growth of cancer cells. Recent research is now revealing some fascinating results of using fasting and/or the keto diet to dramatically decrease insulin. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Jason Fung about how fasting has been found as a useful adjunct to chemotherapy, as it helps to put cells into a quiet repair mode which lessens the really uncomfortable symptoms of chemo most people experience. He also speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about his experience in managing stage IV cancer, using the ketogenic diet, fasting, radiation, chemotherapy, and his spiritual practices for maximum benefit. Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with fasting. His latest book, The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery, was just released. Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. His research focus is on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating value in Functional Medicine models of care. Currently, his teaching focus is on cancer, COVID, and uncertainty. Dr. Hanaway was initiated in 2009 as a Mara’akame (Indigenous healer) by the Huichol people of the Sierra Madres in Mexico. He holds community fires, leads ceremonies, and offers traditional healing sessions. This part of his practice provides some much-welcome spiritual and emotional insight into addressing our imbalances as a nation. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker. Long-Haul COVID And The Mysteries Of Coronavirus: A Path To Healing | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, BiOptimizers, and TrueDark The symptoms of COVID-19 are scary enough. What I personally find even more terrifying, is the long-haulers syndrome so many people struggle with months after “recovering” from acute COVID. In many people, lingering symptoms are occurring 6 to 9 months after COVID infection, hence the term long-haulers syndrome. It comes with a slew of symptoms, from fatigue and body aches to difficulty breathing, racing heart, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and more. COVID-19 was originally viewed as a respiratory disease but we’ve now gained a new understanding of its impact on our blood vessels and how that affects the entire body. There’s no better person to dig into the vascular nature of COVID with than today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. William Li. Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. Why Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Rarely Occurs On Its Own

Why Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Rarely Occurs On Its Own | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens More than 500 different species of microbes live in our gut and our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, metabolism, brain function, and more. Simply put, they are critical to our long-term health. Imbalances in the gut ecosystem often trigger or exacerbate small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), along with many other issues. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to explain what SIBO is, how they diagnose and treat it in their patients, and why it is almost always paired with a number of other health issues. Dr. Hyman also shares his personal experience battling SIBO along with mercury poisoning. He called that philosophy, “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens. How Addictive Foods Are Driving Fatty Liver Disease

How Addictive Foods Are Driving Fatty Liver Disease | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or fatty liver, for short) affects 90 million Americans and is a major cause of chronic disease and inflammation in the body. This inflammation creates insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which causes your body to deposit fat not just in your liver but also all around your organs and in your belly. So what is driving fatty liver and the whole cascade of issues it causes? And how do you fix it? In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Shawn Stevenson and Dr. Shebani Sethi Dalai about the various mechanisms that are at work when our bodies process food. The Link Between Autoimmune Disease, Chronic Fatigue, And Hidden Infections with Dr. Steven Phillips and Dana Parish

The Link Between Autoimmune Disease, Chronic Fatigue, And Hidden Infections | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, Essentia, and Tushy Pandemic aside, we’re seeing a national immune crisis. Autoimmune conditions continue to rise to record numbers, not to mention all of the chronic mystery illnesses that so many people struggle with daily. I’ve experienced this firsthand, along with the corresponding frustration and fear. There is an intriguing hypothesis about these conditions that I get into with my guests, Dana Parish and Dr. Steven Phillips, today on The Doctor’s Farmacy: underlying infections. Sneaky tick-borne diseases like Lyme, parasitic infections, and certain viruses can be extremely hard to diagnose. Meanwhile, they can contribute to an immune system collapse and other life-threatening breakdowns throughout the entire body. Dr. Phillips and Dana Parish share their incredible stories of overcoming chronic stealth infections after numerous doctors couldn’t help them. Lyme was a common factor for both of them, while Dr. Phillips was also able to diagnose Bartonella in Dana. At their worst, they both had extremely limited mobility and felt their lives were at risk. Dana shares that in addition to recovering her mobility and strength, treating these infections also had a profound impact on her mental health by reducing her anxiety and depression. Dr. Phillips’ journey not only forced him to be his own detective to find healing, but also showed him how much discordance there is among conventional medicine in treating diseases like Lyme. This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, Essentia, and Tushy. The fat inside your belly is called “VAT” or visceral adipose tissue and this type of fat is particularly dangerous. Who Is Growing And Picking The Food You Eat And How Are They Being Treated?

Who Is Growing And Picking The Food You Eat And How Are They Being Treated? | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo Most of us don’t think about food and farmworkers when we are eating or shopping for groceries, but this is actually the largest sector of workers in the United States. Unfortunately, these workers have historically been marginalized and are often unprotected and underpaid. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman offers a brief overview of why food and farmworkers were not included in the United States Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. He also talks to Kerry Kennedy about a group of farmworkers who banded together to create the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to fight for better wages and working conditions. This coalition of farmworkers found a creative solution to injustice by creating the Fair Food Program, which mandates that growers provide basic protections for their workers. Kerry Kennedy is the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Since 1981, she has worked on diverse human rights issues including child labor, disappearances, indigenous land rights, judicial independence, freedom of expression, ethnic violence, impunity, women's rights, and the environment. Kerry is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Being Catholic Now, Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope, and Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World. How Food, Agriculture, And Energy Are The Cause And Solution To Environmental Collapse with Ken Cook

How Food, Agriculture, And Energy Are The Cause And Solution To Environmental Collapse | This episode is brought to you by Paleovally, ButcherBox, and Athletic Greens The cost of our food and personal care items is much more than what we pay at checkout. The true cost is measured by the impact that thousands of chemicals have on our health, the environment and climate, our economy, and many other facets of life. Being an informed and engaged consumer is one of the most powerful ways to turn around our toxic world, and we have some incredible resources at our fingertips to do that, like the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Today, I’m excited to talk with Ken Cook from the EWG about food, conscious consumerism, and our impact on the planet. Ken Cook is the president and co-founder of the EWG. He is widely recognized as one of the environmental community’s most prominent and influential critics of industrial agriculture and the nation’s broken approach to protecting families and children from toxic substances. Under Cook’s leadership, the EWG has pioneered the use of digital technologies to empower American families with easy-to-use, science-driven tools to help reduce their exposure to potentially harmful ingredients in food, drinking water, cosmetics, and other household products. Capitol Hill’s closely read newspaper, The Hill, regularly lists Cook in its annual roster of Washington’s top lobbyists. It has said Cook’s “influence spans the country” and called EWG “the tip of the green movement’s spear.” This episode is brought to you by Paleovally, ButcherBox, and Athletic Greens. The Cholesterol Test You Should Be Getting | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo Many of us have been told by our doctors that we need to lower our cholesterol levels. Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes with Dr. Dale Bredesen

Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDark Alzheimer’s doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s the severe end of a spectrum, that comes after decades of changes have already been occurring in the brain. So why is it that we’ve grown accustomed to dreading this diagnosis, instead of doing what we can to proactively stop it in its tracks? For one, we’ve long been told that once the brain starts downsizing we can’t reverse the process. Now, we know that’s not the case. It’s possible to avoid brain degradation and actually even rebuild it. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy has been a pioneering detective for Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. Dr. Dale Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer's. His latest book, The End of Alzheimer’s Program, goes into greater detail on the protocol he uses with his patients and how it can be tailored to anyone’s needs, at any age. Dale held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA, and the University of California, San Diego, and directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. He is currently a professor at UCLA and the Chief Science Officer at Apollo Health. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDark. Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing with Dr. Todd LePine

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy. Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome

Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp By now, most of us are familiar with post-COVID syndrome, also called long-haulers syndrome, in which a patient who has had COVID-19 experiences long-lasting symptoms. While medicine is still trying to fully understand the reason why a percentage of COVID-19 patients go on to also experience post-COVID syndrome, there appear to be parallels to chronic fatigue syndrome experienced from the Epstein-Barr virus. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about using a Functional Medicine approach to treat post-COVID syndrome. He also speaks with Dr. Matt Cook about several cutting-edge therapies he is using to treat his patients with post-COVID syndrome. Dr. Matthew Cook is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has completed a fellowship in Functional Medicine. His practice, BioReset™ Medical, provides treatments for conditions ranging from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness. At BioReset™ Medical, Dr. Cook treats some of the most challenging to diagnose and difficult to live with ailments that people suffer from today, including Lyme disease, chronic pain, PTSD, and mycotoxin illness. Who Should Eat Keto and Why? with Gary Taubes

Who Should Eat Keto and Why? | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDark Chances are, you’ve heard a lot of buzz about the ketogenic (or keto) diet. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path. Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDark. Paleovalley is offering 15% off your entire first order. Right now, TrueDark is offering podcast listeners 15% with code DRHYMAN15. Just go to truedark.com/hyman. Here are more of the details from our interview: How an investigative journalism piece on salt and blood pressure led to Gary’s ongoing inquiry into the obesity epidemic (9:11) Why we get fat (13:58) Why science mistakenly began focusing on calories, instead of hormones, to understand obesity (17:58) The origin and perpetuation of fat shaming and obesity stigma (21:45) There is no one-size-fits-all diet (29:02) Using a keto (or low-carb, high-fat) diet to decrease insulin levels (37:20) How ultra-processed, starchy refined carbohydrates are driving most of our global issues (50:15) Would humans and the planet be healthier if we all stopped eating meat and became vegan? (52:34) Connecting what you eat with how you feel (57:57) Research on treating and reversing type 2 diabetes using a ketogenic diet (1:04:41) Using a ketogenic diet to treat cancer, heart disease, heart failure, dementia, epilepsy, and more (1:17:05) Learn more about Gary Taubes at http://garytaubes.com/ and get a copy of his book, The Case for Keto: Rethinking Weight Control and the Science and Practice of Low-Carb/High-Fat Eating at http://garytaubes.com/works/books/the-case-for-keto-2020/.
