Ep 450The Main Causes Of Autoimmune Disease And How To Reverse It
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and InsideTracker. Autoimmune disease is an extremely common and growing issue in our global population, affecting millions of people worldwide. Autoimmune diseases vary in symptoms and severity, but they all have one thing in common: the body is attacking itself. Typically, when someone has one autoimmune disease, it’s likely they have more than one. Examples of autoimmune diseases are type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and Crohn’s, Hashimoto’s, and Graves’. This episode is the first in a new series I’m calling masterclass, where I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host Dhru Purohit about popular health topics including inflammation, autoimmune disease, brain health, sleep, and much more. Today’s episode explores the five main root causes of autoimmune disease—toxins, allergens, microbes, diet, and stress—and the Functional Medicine approach to treating them. Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. Ep 4494 Tricks To Reduce Stress, Anxiety, And Depression
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox. Stress is almost synonymous with our modern lifestyles. We experience external stressors from our jobs, family responsibilities, financial worries, and many other places, then compound them with unhealthy lifestyle choices. The result is an epidemic of stress and increased risk for chronic diseases. In this episode, I talk to Wim Hof, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham about how to take control of our minds and bodies through cold therapy, breathwork, and mindset and meditation techniques that can help us tap into our innate inner power. Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold, include climbing Mount Everest in nothing but a pair of shorts, running across the Namibian desert at 104°F without drinking any water, and sitting in an ice bath for 1 hour and 52 minutes. He has proven in eight university research studies that he can consciously influence his autonomic nervous system, measurably reduce inflammation, regulate his internal pH levels and body temperature, and activate his immune system to resist the effects of poisonous endotoxins. These studies also show that Wim is able to teach others to achieve similar accomplishments in as little as four days through the Wim Hof Method. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. He hosts the biggest health podcast in Europe, Feel Better, Live More. His first book, How to Make Disease Disappear, is an international bestseller all over the world and has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide in just 18 months. Dr. Chatterjee is known for finding the root cause of people’s health problems, and he has highlighted his methods in the ground-breaking BBC television show, Doctor in the House, which has been shown in over 70 countries around the world. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox. Rupa Health is a place for Functional Medicine practitioners to access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, Great Plains, and more. Ep 4435 Signs You're Not Healthy And How To Fix It
This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Tushy. One of the biggest mistakes I often see patients make is taking a linear approach to health, focusing most of their energy just on exercise, for example, but leaving everything else by the wayside. We can’t optimize health if we’re only supporting one part of it. And optimizing our health through what we put at the end of our fork is the lowest-hanging fruit to achieve all our other health goals. In this episode, Dr. Hyman and guests dive into topics including insulin resistance, nutritional deficiencies, gut health, and much more. They also talk about what you can start doing to get healthier today. Lewis Howes is a New York Times Bestselling author of the hit book, The School of Greatness. He is a lifestyle entrepreneur, high performance business coach and keynote speaker. He hosts a top 100 iTunes ranked podcast, The School of Greatness, and was recognized by The White House and President Obama as one of the top 100 entrepreneurs in the country under 30. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. Dr. Steven Gundy is one of the world’s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition, as well as medical director at The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. He is author of many New York Times bestselling books and is the founder of GundryMD, a line of wellness products and supplements, and host of The Dr. Gundry Podcast. Dr. Casey Means is a Stanford-trained physician, Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of metabolic health company Levels, an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and a Lecturer at Stanford University. Her mission is to maximize human potential and reverse the epidemic of preventable chronic disease by empowering individuals with tools that can facilitate deep understanding of our bodies and inform personalized and sustainable dietary and lifestyle choices. This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Tushy. Ep 435Doctors Reveal How They Healed Their Autoimmune Disease
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. As a whole, autoimmune disease affects over 80 million Americans and five percent of the population in Western countries. They include type 1 diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and dozens of others. While your body is designed to fight off harmful things like infections, toxins, allergens, or a stress response, with autoimmune issues the body directs a hostile attack on its own joints, brain, skin, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Cynthia Li and Dr. Terry Wahls about their personal stories of working through autoimmunity and how it led them to help others using Functional Medicine. They also dive into the underlying triggers of inflammation such as stress, hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities, toxic exposure, genetic predisposition, nutrient deficiencies, and leaky gut. Dr. Cynthia Li received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She’s practiced as an internist in many settings, including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, and St. Anthony Medical Clinic serving the homeless. She currently has a private practice in Berkeley, CA and is the author of, Brave New Medicine: A Doctor’s Unconventional Path to Healing Her Autoimmune Illness. Ep 434Advances In Therapeutic Uses Of Medical Marijuana with Dr. Mikhail Kogan
This episode is sponsored by Even, BiOptimizers, and Athletic Greens There is a lot of noise around medicinal marijuana; so much so that just the thought of trying it might be overwhelming. There are actually many proven benefits when it’s used the right way, some of which I’ve experienced myself. When I was recovering from mold toxicity combined with C. diff and a slew of other factors that ruined my gut, I was so nauseous that I couldn't eat and was rapidly losing weight. None of the anti-nausea medications I tried were working, but marijuana did. Now, there are a lot of nuances to its use and much more research to be done. To understand what the data currently shows us on medicinal cannabis and where someone might start if they’re curious, I’m excited to sit down with an expert on the topic, Dr. Mikhail “Misha” Kogan. Dr. Kogan is the medical director of the George Washington University Center for Integrative Medicine, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He has recommended medical marijuana to thousands of patients and is a frequent lecturer on medical cannabis to professional audiences across the nation. This episode is brought to you by Even, BiOptimizers, and Athletic Greens. Even provides personalized nutrition for medication users and right now, you can schedule a complimentary consult with an Even expert to figure out the right nutrient companion for you. Ep 431Genetics, Obesity, Diabetes, And Risk Of COVID: A Functional Medicine Perspective with Dr. Ronesh Sinha
This episode is brought to you by Kettle & Fire, Beekeeper’s Naturals, and Thrive Market Did you know that 63% of Covid-19 hospitalizations can be linked back to at least one of four pre-existing conditions, all of which are largely preventable through diet and lifestyle choices? Obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and heart failure are strongly linked to more severe Covid outcomes. These cardiometabolic diseases represented a different type of pandemic, long before Covid-19 hit. We can make incredible reductions to our risk of these health problems, and even reverse them, using the power of food. Even people with genetic predispositions can significantly reduce the risk of any of these diagnoses and the Covid consequences that can come with them. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Dr. Ronesh Sinha, author of The South Asian Health Solution. He is an internal medicine physician who runs a lifestyle clinic in Silicon Valley focused on reversing insulin resistance in ethnically diverse patients. Ep 430Diverticulitis: A Functional Medicine Approach with Dr. George Papanicolaou
Diverticulitis: A Functional Medicine Approach | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens Over 200,000 people per year are treated for diverticulitis, a painful condition in which small pouches in the colon, called diverticula, become infected. Symptoms of diverticulitis include nausea, fever, chills, loss of appetite, and constipation. While conventional medicine treatments for diverticulitis usually consist of antibiotics and surgery, Functional Medicine looks at a wide variety of things like microbiome diversity, dietary fiber consumption, gut health, inflammation, and more, to both prevent and treat this condition. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses diverticulitis with Dr. George Papanicolaou. They talk about how lifestyle habits, such as a low fiber diet and elevated stress, can contribute to diverticulitis. They also share certain foods and supplements that are supportive and healing to the body. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency, he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness.” Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. Blood Clots: A Functional Medicine Approach | This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and ButcherBox Blood clots are a fairly prevalent issue that can become very serious if not treated promptly. They can occur as a result of injury to the lining of the blood vessels or lack of mobility for an extended period of time. And while the traditional approach to treatment is using a blood thinner or aspirin, Functional Medicine focuses on the prevention of blood clots as well as treatment options, which may include healing the gut, reducing inflammation, and supporting genetics. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses this topic with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. They explore how health conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disease, metabolic syndrome—and even certain genetics—may increase the risk of blood clotting. They also share their personal experiences with blood clots and how they work with patients to prevent and treat them. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Ep 425The Surprising Science Behind Cancer Prevention
The Surprising Science Behind Cancer Prevention | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea The right diet is so imperative in preventing cancer or during the healing process. This is in large part because of the role insulin plays in cancer; insulin acts as a growth factor in the body, which is one of the reasons too much insulin leads to obesity. It’s also why insulin will support the growth of cancer cells. In this compilation episode, Dr. Mark Hyman is joined by Dr. William Li and Dr. Jason Fung to discuss how recent research is now revealing the connection between insulin resistance and cancer, what you can eat to prevent cancer, and much more. Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacted care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. Ep 422Treating OCD From A Functional Medicine Perspective with Dr. George Papanicolaou
Treating OCD From A Functional Medicine Perspective | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, affects approximately 2.2 million adults and 500,000 children in the US. Individuals with OCD often experience impulsive and intrusive thoughts that replay in the mind, in addition to behaviors such as excessive cleaning and repetitive counting. While conventional medicine approaches OCD as a chemical issue, Functional Medicine looks at genetic components, inflammation, gut health, and other lifestyle influences in its treatment of OCD. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses OCD with Dr. George Papanicolaou. They discuss just how debilitating this condition can be and share case studies of how they have treated patients with this condition. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Ep 421How Diet And Stress Affect Your Immune System
How Diet And Stress Affect Your Immune System | This episode is sponsored by MitoPure Your immune system is constantly responding to your internal and external conditions. For instance, most of us have experience with coming down with a bad cold or flu directly following a period in which we haven’t been eating or sleeping well. The same principle can apply to more severe or chronic disease as well; a dysregulated immune system opens the door for illness. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Jeffrey Bland about how the food you eat and the quality of your sleep, your thoughts and relationships, and more are fundamental when it comes to the regulation of your immune system. He also speaks with Dr. Leonard Calabrese about the role that movement and exercise play in supporting your immune health. Dr. Jeffrey Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature’s greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Jeff is advocating for the power of immuno-rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, Jeff is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. Jeff’s career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. Jeff then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers. Dr. Leonard Calabrese is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Vice Chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases. Dr. Calabrese is also the director of the RJ Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology at Cleveland Clinic and holds joint appointments in the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Wellness Institute. Ep 419Is An Autoimmune Condition Driving Your Raynaud's Syndrome? with Dr. Cindy Geyer
Is An Autoimmune Condition Driving Your Raynaud's Syndrome? | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens Autoimmune conditions are rising in prevalence and oftentimes if you have one, you are likely to have several. In some people who experience autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren’s, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, Raynaud’s Syndrome may be present. Raynaud’s is an uncomfortable vascular condition affecting the small arteries, prompting them to spasm, and can have a big impact on quality of life. Symptoms can include numbness and pain in fingers, toes, ears, or nose when exposed to cold weather or stress. Raynaud’s can also appear on its own in a milder form than if accompanied by another autoimmune condition. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses Raynaud's Syndrome with Dr. Cindy Geyer. They talk about who is at greatest risk of developing this condition and how it can lead to other more serious conditions such as high blood pressure, heart conditions, and stroke. They also explore the Functional Medicine approach to treating Raynaud’s, including healing the gut and incorporating stress management techniques. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is a recently elected fellow of ACLM. Dr. Geyer has been a core faculty member at The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) for 20 years, teaching physicians and other healthcare professionals how to use food and lifestyle to address health concerns in their own lives and those of their patients. Ep 416How To Master Hunger And Cravings with Dr. Elizabeth Boham
How To Master Hunger And Cravings | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens So many of my patients tell me they feel their food cravings have gotten out of control and a lack of willpower is driving their weight gain, generally making them feel like crap. But, the truth is, this is not a matter of willpower. Our industrial food industry produces food-like substances specifically made to hook our taste buds with every bite, hijacking our brain chemistry and metabolism, and giving rise to disease. Our bodies actually have a finely-tuned appetite control system that is governed by certain hormones. However, our modern diet, elevated stress, and inadequate sleep impairs this system, leading us to crave the wrong foods and feel hungry all the time. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses our natural hunger regulator, ghrelin, with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. They talk about how this hormone works and what can interrupt its natural production. They also discuss strategies to help the body regulate hunger naturally. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Ep 415How To Quit Eating Ultra-Processed Foods
How to Quit Eating Ultra-Processed Foods | This episode is brought to you by Even The SAD (Standard American Diet) is over 60 percent ultra-processed food mostly from commodity crops—wheat, corn, and soy turned into hundreds of thousands of food-like products that bear little resemblance to our evolutionary diet. These addictive, nutrient-depleted foods not only make us obese and sick but drive us to consume more and more “food-like substances,” looking for the missing nutrients. Yet, a desire for real food is a fundamental part of our basic biological blueprint. Given the chance, our taste receptors will naturally gravitate toward the inherent goodness found in real, whole foods. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dave Asprey, Fred Provenza, and Dr. Assem Malhotra about how our taste buds, hormones, and brain chemistry have been hijacked by the food industry. They discuss how ultra-processed foods are leading us to be overfed, yet undernourished and how we can reclaim our nutritional wisdom by eliminating ultra-processed foods from our diet. Dave Asprey is the founder and Chairman of Bulletproof 360, a high-performance coffee and food company, and creator of the widely-popular Bulletproof Coffee. He is a New York Times bestselling author, host of the Webby award-winning podcast Bulletproof Radio, and has been featured on the Today show, Fox News, Nightline, CNN, and dozens more. Over the last two decades Dave, the “Father of Biohacking”, has worked with world-renowned doctors, researchers, scientists, and global mavericks to uncover the latest, most innovative methods, techniques, and products for enhancing mental and physical performance. Fred Provenza grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us About Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-written with Michel Meuret). He has published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals. Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a founding member of Action on Sugar and was the lead campaigner highlighting the harm caused by excess sugar consumption in the United Kingdom, particularly its role in type 2 diabetes and obesity. In 2015, he coordinated the Choosing Wisely campaign by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges as lead author in a BMJ paper to highlight the risks of overuse of medical treatments. In the same year, he became the youngest member to be appointed to the board of trustees of UK health think tank, The King’s Fund, that advises the government on health policy. Ep 414Food Justice: Why Our Bodies And Our Society Are Inflamed with Dr. Rupa Marya and Raj Patel
Food Justice: Why Our Bodies And Our Society Are Inflamed | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, Athletic Greens, and Pique Tea A large part of my work in Functional Medicine is addressing inflammation. I talk a lot about how the food we eat, and our current food system as a whole, promotes inflammation and leads to chronic disease. But it’s not just our bodies that are inflamed, it’s also our societies and our planet. Covid has only made racial disparities even more apparent, while the disasters that result from climate change continue to climb in frequency and severity as well. It’s all connected. I can’t tell you how excited I was to host Dr. Rupa Marya and Raj Patel on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, to dig into decolonizing the food system to address the inflammatory state of our world and our bodies. The Functional Medicine Approach To Gallbladder Disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou
The Functional Medicine Approach To Gallbladder Disease | This episode is brought to you by Essentia and Paleovalley The gallbladder is an organ we don’t often pay much attention to, but if you or a loved one has had gallstones, you know they can be very painful. About 6-9% of adults experience gallstones and their associated symptoms which can include nausea and vomiting. The gallbladder plays a vital role in our digestive process by storing bile which helps us break down fats. If your bile is imbalanced, gallstones may form. The conventional approach to relieving gallbladder pain and discomfort is through the use of medication or surgery to remove the gallbladder, whereas the Functional Medicine approach seeks to uncover the root cause of the problem and approaches treatment from that place. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses gallbladder disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou. They talk about how they work with patients to determine what is causing the disease, and how an imbalance in the composition of bile can also result in gut problems like dysbiosis and SIBO. They also provide tips on supporting your body to optimize digesting fats if you’ve had your gallbladder removed. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. This episode is brought to you by Essentia and Paleovalley. Right now, you can take advantage of Essentia’s incredible Labor Day offer of 25% off with 2 free pillows (normally a $300 value) by going to learn.myessentia.com/DrMarkHyman. Paleovalley is offering 15% off your entire first order. Just go to paleovalley.com/hyman to check out all their clean Paleo products and take advantage of this deal. In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss: The root cause of gallbladder disease, including gallstones What healthy bile is and why it’s so important in the role of digesting fats The difference between the conventional medicine and Functional Medicine approach to treating gallbladder disease How bile imbalances can lead to gut imbalances such as dysbiosis and SIBO The tie between Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and gallbladder disease and the role of gluten Consequences of surgery to remove the gallbladder Supporting the body if you don’t have a gallbladder Additional Resources: Digesting Fat, Optimizing Your Health, and My Daily Supplements https://drhyman.com/blog/2017/04/28/digesting-fat-optimizing-health-daily-supplements/ A New Roadmap for Treating Disease https://drhyman.com/blog/2018/05/16/a-new-roadmap-for-treating-disease/ Healing Psoriasis from the Inside Out with Dr. Todd LePine https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/10/16/podcast-hc27/ How to Prevent and Reverse Fatty Liver Disease with Functional Medicine https://drhyman.com/blog/2021/08/02/podcast-hc67/

What Causes Brain Inflammation And How Can We Fix It?
What Causes Brain Inflammation And How Can We Fix It? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox While inflammation is a natural part of life that serves a beneficial role to protect us and help us heal, systemic inflammation leads to disease. This type of persistent inflammation not only affects the body, it also affects the brain. In fact, neuroinflammation may be linked to everything from Alzheimer’s and dementia to ADD, ALS, depression, and even schizophrenia. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Drs. Daniel Amen and Todd LePine about how the foods we eat, the toxins we’re exposed to, our stress levels, and our genetics are just some of the many aspects that can promote brain inflammation. They also discuss how they work with patients to reduce inflammation in the brain and in the body. Dr. Daniel Amen, has been paving the way for a new type of psychiatry, looking at the actual brain and using an integrative approach to prevent disease and successfully treat it. Baby’s Gut Instinct: Why Having A Healthy Gut Is Critical To Infant Health with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh
Baby’s Gut Instinct: Why Having A Healthy Gut Is Critical To Infant Health | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Primal Kitchen, and Beekeeper’s Naturals Today we’re talking about one of my favorite topics: poop. And we’re finding out that the most important time to pay attention to our poop and what it can tell us about the microbiome is in the earliest months of life. I recently did a really interesting webinar on this topic. It's such a critical aspect of creating lifelong health that I wanted to share it on the podcast, to make sure anyone who missed it had a chance to listen. With the huge rise in inflammatory diseases from obesity and diabetes to autoimmunity and so many more, it’s imperative we look at the gut to optimize whole body health—this is a fundamental piece of Functional Medicine that I’ve been using with my patients for decades. To dig into the specifics of how we can start kids off with the best health possible, I sat down with Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh. She is leading the work in understanding the infant microbiome, as a nutritional scientist who helps new and expectant moms learn about creating healthy gut bugs in their babies. Dr. Tracy translates her extensive scientific knowledge of breastmilk and the gut microbiome into practical terms to help parents understand how a balanced gut from infancy leads to a healthy immune system and metabolism for life. Dr. Shafizadeh received her PhD in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis, and spends her free time "loving the guts" out of her two boys. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Primal Kitchen, and Beekeeper’s Naturals. Fix Your Allergies By Fixing Your Gut And Changing Your Diet with Dr. Cindy Geyer
Fix Your Allergies By Fixing Your Gut And Changing Your Diet | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and MitoPure Seasonal allergies are something we’re all familiar with, whether you’re personally affected or not—and they’re rising in prevalence. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances in the environment making IgE antibodies that trigger mast cells to release histamine. High histamine levels cause symptoms like itchy watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, headaches, and more. Conventional treatments may help reduce symptoms temporarily, but they often include steroids which can be detrimental to your immune system, may contribute to osteoporosis, and, most importantly, don’t address the root cause of the immune dysregulation. In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses seasonal allergies with Dr. Cindy Geyer. They talk about how our early life informs the immune system and what steps parents can take to ensure a healthy gut flora and healthy immune system, right from the start. They also discuss ways to address the root cause of the allergy symptoms using diet, supplements, stress reduction, and more. A clinician, educator, and avid hiker, she is passionate about collaborative approaches to health and wellness: from the integrative team model in working with individual patients, to community partnerships that together can affect healthy changes in the places people live and work. Is Dairy Good For Us?
Is Dairy Good For Us? | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox We have no biological requirement for dairy, and yet, we’ve been told over and over again that this food is a great source of calcium and that milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. However, the research shows that none of this is true. In fact, close to 70 percent of the world’s population is genetically unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products—a problem known as lactose intolerance. But even if you aren’t lactose intolerant, consuming dairy can lead to weight gain, bloating, acne, gas, allergies, eczema, brittle bones, and sometimes even cancer. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why he often works with patients to eliminate dairy in conversations with his colleagues Lisa Dreher and Dr. Elizabeth Boham. He also speaks with Dr. David Ludwig about his recent research on milk and dairy products. Lisa Dreher is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a Clinical Nutrition Specialist working in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her Masters degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing integrative and functional nutrition in private practice before joining UWC in 2015. She has since received additional training through the Institute for Functional Medicine. Over the past 10 years, Lisa has delivered several public health lectures on the role of food as medicine and her work has been showcased in Reader’s Digest, on National Public Radio, and she was featured in the Broken Brain 2 series. She also developed the Digestive Health and Gut Microbiome training module for the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine practice group through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. How To Use The Power Of Your Mind For Spontaneous Healing with Dr. Joe Dispenza
How To Use The Power Of Your Mind For Spontaneous Healing | This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and Athletic Greens I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of human potential and the mind-body connection. Time and time again, I’ve seen that mindset is a defining factor in how successful my patients are on their healing journey. The mind-body connection is a powerful one, so much so that there are numerous reports of spontaneous remission of chronic pain and diseases when people change their headspace. How we think and feel creates our state of being. Digging into our subconscious thoughts and beliefs and redefining how we see our future can have real, long-lasting impacts on our physical health. I was so excited to sit down with Dr. Joe Dispenza to talk about his work in mind-body medicine, helping people overcome their biggest obstacles and form new, healthy, limitless lives. Dr. Joe’s passion can be found at the intersection of the latest findings from the fields of neuroscience, epigenetics, and quantum physics to explore the science behind spontaneous remissions. He uses that knowledge to teach people how to heal their bodies of health conditions, make significant changes in their lives, and evolve their consciousness. Choosing Skin Care Products that Won’t Make You Sick with Dr. Cindy Geyer
Choosing Skin Care Products that Won’t Make You Sick | This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and HigherDOSE What we put on our skin—the largest organ in our body—gets absorbed and travels through the bloodstream. It’s a simple fact, yet so many of us don’t think twice about how the ingredients in our favorite skin care products, such as shampoo, sunscreen, lotion, and insect repellent, affect our health. Even small amounts of toxic ingredients in skin products can add up and contribute to endocrine disorders, heart disease, cancer, and a range of other illnesses. In this episode, Dr. Hyman talks to Dr. Cindy Geyer about why it’s important to take a good look at what we put on our skin. They discuss the dangers of ingredients such as parabens and phthalates, which can disrupt hormones, as well as how Dr. Hyman detoxes his body, where to find out how safe your favorite products are, and much more. A clinician, educator, and avid hiker, she is passionate about collaborative approaches to health and wellness: from the integrative team model in working with individual patients, to community partnerships that together can affect healthy changes in the places people live and work.
