Ep 701Is Vegetable Oil Good Or Bad For You?

This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Rupa Health. Many of us grew up with the message that vegetable oils are safe to use as a heart-healthy alternative over traditional saturated fats. Found at your typical grocery store, these clear, tasteless, and highly refined and processed oils include corn, soybean, canola, safflower, and sunflower oils. These highly unstable, highly inflammatory oils were given a gigantic push by advisory groups we trusted, including the American Heart Association, the National Education Cholesterol Program, the National Institutes of Health—and even our government’s own dietary guidelines. It turns out the truth about oils is not so clear cut. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk all about seed oils, why they shouldn’t be a part of your diet, and the type of fat and oils you should consume instead for optimal health. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Rupa Health. For a limited time, new subscribers to ButcherBox will receive free ground beef FOR LIFE. When you sign up today, ButcherBox will send you two pounds of 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef free in every box for the life of your subscription plus $20 off. To receive this offer, go to ButcherBox.com/farmacy. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 35 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. You can check out a free, live demo with a Q&A or create an account at RupaHealth.com. Here are more details from our interview (audio version / Apple Subscriber version): What’s the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats? (6:04 / 4:20) The connection between saturated fat and cholesterol (8:20 / 6:20) The importance of omega-6-to-omega-3 ratios (10:18 / 8:30) Oils I generally recommend avoiding (13:41 / 12:20) Saturated fats I generally recommend eating (14:38 / 12:40) My favorite fats and oils (17:57 / 15:55) Mentioned in this episode Eat Fat, Get Thin Function Health

Ep 698Simple Methods To Reduce Stress

This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Athletic Greens, and InsideTracker. How do we want to show up, especially when things get tough? This is a great question to ask ourselves as many of us have the tendency to fall quickly and easily into patterns that don’t serve us well, often causing more harm than good, both physically and mentally. There are ways we can take back control of our minds, however, so that we can let go of stress and enjoy what most matters in life. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elissa Epel, Dr. Susan David, and Gabrielle Bernstein about the power of the mind to create or reduce stress. Elissa Epel, PhD, is an internationally renowned health psychologist who is focusing on how to live well and thrive with existential stress, despite the challenges we face personally and globally. She is a professor at UCSF and the director of UCSF’s Aging, Metabolism, and Emotion Center. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and past president of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine and serves on scientific advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health. She is the coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Telomere Effect. Her latest book is The Stress Prescription: Seven Days to More Joy and Ease. Susan David, PhD, is one of the world’s leading management thinkers and an award-winning Harvard Medical School psychologist. Her Wall Street Journal bestselling book, Emotional Agility, describes the psychological skills critical to thriving in times of complexity and change. Susan’s TED Talk on the topic went viral, with over 1 million views in its first week of release. Susan is the CEO of Evidence Based Psychology, on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, a cofounder of the Institute of Coaching (a Harvard Medical School/McLean affiliate), and on the scientific advisory boards of Thrive Global and Virgin Pulse. Gabrielle Bernstein is the New York Times bestselling author of The Universe Has Your Back and has written six additional bestsellers, including Super Attractor, which launched in September 2019. She was featured on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday as a “next-generation thought leader,” and the Oprah Winfrey Network chose Gabrielle to be part of the “Super Soul 100,” a dynamic group of 100 trailblazers whose vision and life’s work are bringing a higher level of consciousness to the world. Ep 697Can You Be Healthy At Any Size?

This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Athletic Greens. We are amidst a metabolic health and obesity crisis that has taken the world by force, hijacking our biology, creating cellular dysfunction, and ultimately making us overweight, depressed, infertile, and chronically ill. The food industry tries to convince us that all calories are the same and then supports a narrative that blames the victim, insinuating that it’s the individual’s fault they are overweight. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about how we’ve lost our way when it comes to diet and health care, why fat shaming is never the answer, why weight-loss drugs are not the solution to the obesity epidemic, and much more. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Athletic Greens. InsideTracker is a personalized health and wellness platform like no other. Ep 694How Suppressed Science Led To Widespread Misunderstanding About Fat And The Root Cause Of Heart Disease

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and BiOptimizers. For many of us, growing up we were told that eating foods high in fat is bad for you. Many people still believe that eating cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat, causes heart attacks. Yet recent studies show there is no association between saturated fat consumption and adverse health outcomes like coronary disease or heart attacks. We also don’t hear enough about insulin resistance as a main driver of cardiovascular disease. In today’s episode, I talk with Nina Teicholz and Dr. Aseem Malhotra about the origins of the hypothesis that dietary fat raises cholesterol, subsequently increasing heart disease, and how it caught hold. Nina Teicholz is a science journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat—especially saturated fat—and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. Nina is also the founder of the Nutrition Coalition, a nonprofit working to ensure that government nutrition policy is transparent and evidence based—work for which she’s been asked to testify before the US Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Senate. Dr. Aseem Malhotra is an NHS-trained consultant, cardiologist, and visiting professor of evidence-based medicine at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health in Salvador, Brazil. He is a founding member of Action on Sugar. In 2015, he became the youngest member to be appointed to the board of trustees of the UK health charity The King's Fund. He is a pioneer of the lifestyle medicine movement in the UK and in 2018 was ranked by software company Onalytica as the number one doctor in the world influencing obesity thinking. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and BiOptimizers. Ep 693How Chronic Stress Creates Hormonal Havoc

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Mitopure. Chronic stress has become epidemic in our society where faster is better and we attempt to pack more obligations into our ever-expanding schedules. In the face of chronic stress, insulin increases and your adrenal glands release hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones flood your system, raising your heart rate, increasing your blood pressure, making your blood more likely to clot, damaging your brain’s memory center, increasing belly fat storage, and generally wreaking havoc on your body. So what steps can we take to manage stress? In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about how chronic stress creates hormonal havoc and how to use diet and lifestyle practices to reduce its negative effects. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Mitopure. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 35 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, Joovv, and Thrive Market. Excess belly fat, or visceral fat around the organs, is the number-one cause of aging. It drives inflammation, increases the risk of blood clots, changes your hormones and brain chemistry, and more. It’s a recipe for disaster in the body. Not only does belly fat surround the organs, but it’s an organ of its own that can produce dangerous inflammatory cytokines that may lead to a cytokine storm. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Dr. William Li to talk about the top foods that can fight harmful fat, improve metabolism, and strengthen our body’s natural defense systems. Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist, and author of the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking research has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments that impact care for more than 70 diseases, including diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, Can We Eat to Starve Cancer? has garnered more than 11 million views. He is President and Medical Director of the Angiogenesis Foundation and is leading global initiatives on food as medicine. His newest book, Eat to Beat Your Diet: Burn Fat, Heal Your Metabolism, and Live Longer, was just released. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, Joovv, and Thrive Market. This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, ButcherBox, and Athletic Greens. Depending on what form they take, our relationships with others can either make our lives fulfilling and joyful or stressful and even sad. Everyone has the intention to live well and feel happy, but so many of our choices derail us from those goals. Investing our time and energy into our relationships (even the one we have with ourselves) might be the key. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Robert Waldinger, Esther Perel, and Angelika Alana about why relationships are so important to our health and how to be the best version of yourself in them. Ep 690Why “Skinny Fat” Can Be Worse than Obesity

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. It’s no secret that being overweight or obese can increase your risk for numerous health problems, including stroke, some cancers, heart disease, and depression. What many people don’t realize, however, is that we can suffer all these problems even if we’re normal weight or underweight. Scientists have even coined a phrase for this phenomenon: “thin on the outside, fat on the inside,” or TOFI. Instead of being “overweight,” these people are “under-lean” (i.e., they don’t have enough muscle) and have a little extra weight around the middle, or “belly fat.” TOFIs have the metabolic features of a prediabetic obese person: Low muscle mass, inflammation, high triglycerides, low good cholesterol, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking about “skinny fat,” why it can be worse than obesity, and how to address it. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 35 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. Ep 689How Big Food Is Keeping Us And Our Children Sick with Calley Means

This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth, InsideTracker, BiOptimizers, and BON CHARGE. We live in a world that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. But in reality, these things are often heavily influenced and manipulated by industry, particularly Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, which have corrupted many institutions, politicians, professional associations, research institutions, and medical schools. And it has, unfortunately, led to mass confusion and illness in the public. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Calley Means to talk about how Big Food and Big Pharma are rigging the system and profiting off of our ill health. Calley is the co-founder of TrueMed, a company that enables Americans to buy exercise and healthy food with FSA/HSA dollars. He is also the co-author (with his sister, Dr. Casey Means) of an upcoming book on food-as-medicine. Earlier in his career, he was a consultant for food and pharma companies and is now exposing practices they use to weaponize our institutions of trust. He is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Business School. This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth, InsideTracker, BiOptimizers, and BON CHARGE. Ep 688What To Eat To Support Your Gut, Reduce Inflammation, And Have More Energy

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Mitopure. There is no other activity you do every day that has more power to change your biology than what you eat. Food carries information molecules, instructions, and code that programs your biology with every bite for better or worse. Food is more than just calories; it is information that controls every aspect of your health. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) comprises over 60 percent ultra-processed food mostly from commodity crops—wheat, corn, and soy—turned into hundreds of thousands of food-like products that bear little resemblance to our evolutionary diet. In this episode, I explore how to use food as our greatest ally for achieving an optimal state of health and healing from states of disease. I discuss what to eat to support every system in the body, what foods you should avoid, why the quality of what you eat matters, and more. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Mitopure. Ep 684How To Support Your Liver With Food, Household Products, And Supplements

This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, InsideTracker, Athletic Greens, and Nordic Naturals. A healthy liver helps your body clean your blood, combat toxic junk and chemicals in your environment, and much more. It is instrumental in keeping you from getting sick and helping you maintain plenty of energy. Unfortunately, however, 90 million Americans—and a growing number of individuals worldwide—have what is called “fatty liver disease,” which literally means your liver fills with fat. In today’s episode, I answer a question from a listener about how to take care of your liver. I also speak with Dr. Robert Lustig and Dr. Elizabeth Boham about why fatty liver is so prevalent, how to test for it, and how to reverse it. Dr. Robert Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He’s the Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. Ep 679How Our Health Suffers Because Of Corruption In The Food System

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and InsideTracker. Obesity rates have climbed by over 400 percent in the last 60 years. More than half of US adults are overweight or obese, and one in five children has been clinically diagnosed with obesity. What the heck is going on to cause this rapid decline in health that’s also impacting our children at such an alarming rate? Today on the podcast, I sit down with my friend and business partner Dhru Purohit for part two of our conversation. We discuss the need for a radical shift in food policy at the federal level, why fixing the food system is a bipartisan issue, and the need for transparency to stop corruption in industry-funded nutrition research and academia in favor of Big Food’s agenda. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and InsideTracker. Ep 678Young Forever: The Secrets To Living Your Longest, Healthiest Life

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, Joovv, and BiOptimizers. We can’t avoid getting older, but we can reduce biological aging—the internal process that creates all the symptoms of the disease we’ve come to call aging. That means we can be one age chronologically, and another internally. I’m happy to use myself as an example of what we can do to our biology when we take out negative inputs and embrace positive ones: I’m 63 years old but my biological age is 43. We are living in a pivotal time for reframing the intersection of age and health. My passion for this topic combined with the incredible tools I’ve discovered led me to write my new book, Young Forever, so that I could share this life-changing information with others. Today on the podcast, I’m so excited to sit down with my friend and business partner Dhru Purohit to talk about some of the key highlights from my research on longevity. Dhru and I dive into the best way to determine your biological age so that you can begin your own journey of aging backward with measurable data. Functional Medicine provides us with the perfect framework to prevent and heal dis-ease, with the exciting side effect of reduced aging. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, Joovv, and BiOptimizers. Ep 677Practices To Stay Young Forever

I focus a lot on the importance of diet and exercise when it comes to health and longevity, but daily habits like good sleep hygiene, healthy stress management, living out of a sense of purpose, prioritizing self-care, and community involvement are just as important. This is because your health and longevity are determined by your individual exposome washing over your genes. In other words, your genes are not your destiny. They load the gun, but your environment pulls the trigger. And this is good news! In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I dive into the importance of sleep, stress management, self-care, community, purpose, and spirit and how to prioritize these things in your life. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. Ep 675The Science Of Plant-Based Meat vs Grass-Fed Meat with Stephan van Vliet

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Cozy Earth, BON CHARGE, and Mitopure. If you’ve ever wondered if plant-based meat alternatives are nutritionally equal to real, pasture-raised meats, or if they are truly better for issues like inflammation and cardiovascular health, this is the episode for you. Meat has become such a monolithic topic when, in fact, it’s extremely complex and nuanced. We can’t just say all meat is good or no meat is good, it’s a matter of what types and sources of proteins you’re eating and what the rest of your diet looks like, too. I’m excited to dive into all those complexities today with Dr. Stephan van Vliet, who is a nutrition scientist with metabolomics expertise in the Center for Human Nutrition Studies at Utah State University. Dr. van Vliet’s research is performed at the nexus of agricultural and human health. He routinely collaborates with farmers, ecologists, and agricultural scientists to study critical linkages between agricultural production methods, the nutrient density of food, and human health. His work has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Scientific Reports, the Journal of Nutrition, and the Journal of Physiology. Ep 674How Having Variety In Your Diet Creates Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and InsideTracker. It can be easy to fall into a food rut, eating the same things week in and week out. Consuming a variety of foods not only adds more excitement to your meals, but it’s also essential for expanding the nutritional diversity of your diet. There are thousands of phytochemicals, also called phytonutrients, found in whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, spices, and tea, among many other things. These natural compounds create a variety of colors in our plant foods and signal various benefits. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. William Li, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, and Dhru Purohit about why having diversity in your diet and eating a range of colorful produce is the ideal way to promote optimal health. Dr. Li is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease—The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. Ep 673The Good Type Of Stress: Hormesis

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. Hormetic stressors are good stressors. These are actions that, in the right dose, have the power to lower inflammation, boost tissue repair and metabolism, and support our mitochondria. It’s like the saying goes: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Things like exercise and strength training, hot and cold therapies, light therapy, ozone, and others are all mild stressors that jump-start your body into repair and rejuvenation. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I dive into how adversity and little stresses to your system (i.e., hormesis) activate longevity pathways. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. I’ve compiled it all into a new book called Young Forever, which comes out on February 21, 2023. Learn more and preorder the book at youngforeverbook.com. Ep 670What Actually Causes Aging?

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. To understand and combat rapid aging, we need to understand what causes aging, chronic diseases, and decline. We call these things the hallmarks of aging—the underlying common pathways or mechanisms of aging. Each hallmark is influenced by the others and affected by various imbalances—too much or too little of certain inputs that can negatively impact the expression and progression of the hallmark. Understanding those interactions and weblike connections is the key to solving the puzzle of aging. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I dive into the 10 distinct hallmarks of aging and how to address them. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. Ep 669The 3 Biggest Myths About Emotional Eating with Marc David

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Cozy Earth, Paleovalley, and Mitopure. Many of us turn to food to cope with feelings, then we beat ourselves up. Personally, I’m guilty of turning to food when I’m exhausted and then feeling bad about not making great choices or eating when I wasn’t truly hungry. But what we don’t realize is that emotional eating is natural and inborn, and it’s not a matter of having too little willpower. The healing process means getting unstuck from negative patterns, reframing our inner dialogue, and acknowledging the different parts of us and what they’re each asking for. Feeling guilty and disempowered isn’t doing us any good. Today I’m excited to sit down with a leading expert in the field of emotional eating and a good friend, Marc David. Marc David, M.A., is the bestselling author of the books, Nourishing Wisdom: A Mind Body Approach to Nutrition and Well-Being and The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss, a frequent speaker and consultant, and host of the celebrated Psychology of Eating Podcast. Marc is also the Founder of The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, the world’s only health coaching program devoted to teaching the principles of Dynamic Eating Psychology and Mind Body Nutrition. Ep 663How To Use Your Breath To Prevent Disease

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, InsideTracker, and Pendulum. Of all the things we do each day, breathing is arguably the most important. While breathing’s most important job is to literally keep us alive, breathing can help in many more ways than just survival, including activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. In today’s episode, I talk with James Nestor, Dr. Louis Ignarro, Wim Hof, and Dr. Jim Gordon about using breathing to support your health. James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, and more. His latest book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, was an instant New York Times bestseller. Breath explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly—and how we can get it back. Dr. Louis Ignarro is a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of nitric oxide and how it positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for—among other innovations—Viagra. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his PhD in pharmacology. Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold. He is the author of The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential. The benefits of Wim’s method, now practiced by tens of thousands, have been validated by eight university research studies. Dr. James Gordon, author of Transforming Trauma: The Path to Hope and Healing, is a Harvard-educated psychiatrist and the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. He is a clinical professor at Georgetown Medical School and was chairman (under Presidents Clinton and G.W. Bush) of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. Compounds that have long been considered recreational drugs by conventional standards are finally being recognized through science as powerful tools for overcoming hard-to-treat health issues, like PTSD, depression, addiction, and more. Yet, we aren’t very successful at treating them with modern medicine. This is a pivotal moment for turning the treatment of mental health around as we explore psychedelic medicine. Ep 660How To Heal The Brain And Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, Athletic Greens, and Paleovalley. Until recently, the most popular approach to treating Alzheimer’s has been to focus on managing the symptoms in the brain. Now brain experts and neurologists know that a better, more effective approach to helping Alzheimer’s patients requires a full-body assessment with all-encompassing, highly individualized treatment that includes improving the microbiome, a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, hormonal balance, adequate sleep, and more. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Richard Isaacson, Dhru Purohit, and Dr. Dale Bredesen about why Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of the brain, but one of the entire body. Dr. Richard Isaacson serves as Director of the Center for Brain Health and Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic (APC) at Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine. He previously served as Director of the APC at the Weill Cornell Memory Disorders Program, Assistant Dean of Faculty Development, and associate professor of neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine & NewYork-Presbyterian. He remains an adjunct associate professor of neurology in the Department of Neurology at Weill Cornell. Prior to that, he served as associate professor of clinical neurology, Vice-Chair of Education, and Education Director of the McKnight Brain Institute in the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset. Dr. Dale Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The End of Alzheimer's, The End of Alzheimer's Program, and his latest book, The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words. Ep 659Why We Need To Reframe Our Approach To Aging

This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens and BiOptimizers. Modern medicine treats each individual disease as if it were a distinct entity separate from everything else that happens in the body. Rather than study the root causes and underlying mechanisms of aging, we look for drugs to block abnormal processes and suppress symptoms. Functional Medicine provides a new road map for healthy aging—one in which we don’t view all diseases of aging as different things. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss why we need to reframe our concept of aging, how and why we age the way we do, and what to do about it. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. I’ve compiled it all into a new book called Young Forever, which comes out on February 21, 2023. Learn more and preorder the book at youngforeverbook.com. AG1 contains 75 high-quality vitamins, minerals, whole-food sourced superfoods, probiotics, and adaptogens to support your entire body. Ep 656Healing Autoimmune Disease Using A Functional Medicine Approach with Dr. Sunjya Schweig

This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and InsideTracker. The array of frustrating symptoms that come along with autoimmune diseases leave those who are suffering constantly looking for answers. Simply put, autoimmune diseases—like rheumatoid arthritis, celiac sprue, inflammatory bowel, type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s, Graves’, lupus, fibromyalgia, and so many more—are conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues rather than a foreign molecule like bacteria. This happens when something confuses the immune system. Today, I’m joined by Dr. Sunjya Schweig to discuss why autoimmune issues are on the rise and how we can treat them using a Functional Medicine approach. Sunjya K. Schweig, MD, is deeply committed to building a cutting-edge, data-driven ecosystem for the prevention and reversal of chronic illness. As the founder and president of the California Center for Functional Medicine, Dr. Schweig and his team provide personalized, precision medicine care to help people with chronic illness recover their health. In 2021, Dr. Schweig founded the Functional Medicine Research and Technology Center, which aims to prevent and reverse chronic illness through research, education, and innovation. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Schweig completed his MD at the University of California, Irvine, and his family medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Family Practice Residency Program in Santa Rosa, CA. He is board certified in family practice (ABFM) integrative and holistic medicine (ABIHM). This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and InsideTracker. Ep 653How Our Environment Shapes Our Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and Paleovalley. Heart disease, cancer, and stroke are the leading causes of death in the US. These diseases all have several risk factors in common, like smoking, physical inactivity, and poor diet, which policymakers often view simply as personal choices. Yet there are many reasons we need to begin looking at health beyond the individual. In today’s episode, I talk with Dan Buettner, James Maskell, Tawny Jones, and Dr. Gabor Maté about how our environment shapes our health and why community is vital to healing. Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world—dubbed Blue Zones—where people live the longest, healthiest lives. James Maskell has spent the past decade innovating at the intersection of Functional Medicine and community, where he created the Functional Forum, the world’s largest Functional Medicine conference, with record-setting participation. His organization and first book of the same name, The Evolution of Medicine, prepares health professionals for this new era of preventive medicine. Tawny Jones has been an accomplished administrator at the Cleveland Clinic for 19 years. She leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, sharing the efficacy of Functional Medicine and demonstrating its cost-effectiveness and ability to improve health. The Functioning for Life shared medical program for chronic disease management is her brainchild. A renowned speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress, and childhood development. Ep 652Are There Any Healthy Sugars And Sweeteners?

This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and InsideTracker. As hunter-gatherers, we ate the equivalent of only 20 teaspoons of sugar a year. Today, we eat over 150 pounds per year per person, or half a pound per day. The average school kid eats 34 teaspoons of sugar a day. Many supermarkets and health-food stores now carry many sneaky sources of sugar disguised in unrecognizable ingredients and so-called “healthy” foods that contain as much—if not more—sugar than their regular versions. In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking all about sugar and sweeteners. I discuss how sugar can dramatically alter your metabolism and brain chemistry, causing you to suffer intense cravings, how quitting sugar can rapidly improve your health, the different types of sugars, and what sugars we should absolutely stay away from. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and InsideTracker. For a limited time, new subscribers to ButcherBox will receive ground beef FOR LIFE. When you sign up today, ButcherBox will send you two pounds of 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef free in every box for the life of your subscription + $10 off.
