Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast! The NFL League year kicked off today. The tampering period began the frenzy of news on Monday, March 15th and there have been a number of interesting developments already across the NFL. The NFL rumors are running wild. We’re here to help clarify. Detroit Lions Podcast Clarifies The Current Situation Free Agency is the beginning of the NFL off-season clarity that fans are looking for, culminating on draft day. Knowing what your 2021 NFL roster looks like is the basis for everything your team will do (unless you are Matt Patricia). The Detroit Lions have limited resources to work with, but have proven themselves to have sharp minds in the front office, particularly in Brad Holmes. Some very solid, and inexpensive, roster moves have been made so far (including picking up Michael Brockers), helping shore up weak areas and set the team up to be as successful as possible in the draft. Second, the salary cap number is in, and it’s also right around where we predicted – the Lions needed to make some moves, and they did. How folks haven’t really understood what Brad Homes was talking about is crazy to us. While some people are stuck on figuring out whether Brad Holmes or Dan Campbell are the top boss, we’ll share with you what is really going on (hint: its modern leadership). Detroit Lions Podcast Grades The “Tag and Trade” Scenario Jeff Risdon had a great article on LionsWire that discussed the historical success of NFL teams using the franchise tag on a player with the idea of trading them. Results are mixed, and we start to divine when the situation works and when it doesn’t. The Riz has a good theory on this situation, while Chris looks at some of the other options facing the team – all of this centered around Kenny Golladay. We also make an announcement about the Riz and his expanded role in the podcast. He’s always been a great guest, but our original love, Case, has a number of issues that are just making his schedule untenable. He WILL be back, but on a more “as available” basis while he gets everything rounded back up. For the record, there’s no animosity and he isn’t suffering painfully due to some malady or anything like that, it’s just that real life hits us in the face sometimes and we have to prioritize the most important things first. We all miss him already. What Does “Buy A Locker Room” Mean? We think that the Chris Spielman interview in which he states that you “Can’t buy a locker room” is much more far-reaching than most are thinking. It’s not just about free agency. It’s about culture. It’s also not just about players. The locker room is a product of the front office, the coaches, and the players. Every single one of those items is needed to build a positive culture. When you talk about people who work for others and them leaving, it’s rare that they quit a job. It’s much frequent that they quit a boss. Detroit Lions Podcast Asks If Dan Campbell Is Weak To be certain, the answer is a straight ‘no’, but the real conversation is about authenticity at the coaching position. We had an issue in that area with the last coaching staff, but there is a story about Dan Campbell that pretty clearly shows that his toughness is real. We discuss it and just how amazing what he endured was, much less that he did so quietly. 2021 NFL Free Agency Sets The Tone For The Draft Brad Holmes has taken a team with only 5 picks in the 2021 NFL Draft and a quarterback who wanted out, and turned it into a good NFL quarterback, 6 picks and an extra first rounder in each of the next two years. Great start, and an opportunity to get some much needed capital for this team. Before we start spending that capital, Holmes will have the 2021 NFL Free Agency period to set himself up further ahead of the draft. This team will need a number of players this year, and looking in the bargain areas of the free agency wire will be a key place for him to play to fill those needs. You don’t want to saddle the team with expensive old players right as the team is ready to make a run, so this is the time to find high quality, nicely priced players to help the team build to the next level. Breaking Coaching News: Lions Hire Antwaan Randle El Another player turned coach for the Lions – the Lions coaching staff has now played in 1081 games, or 67.5 full seasons. If you want a staff that can command the respect of its players because they’ve “been there”, you’ve hired them. This is an interesting dynamic for the team after the previous regime. Detroit Lions Podcast On Jared Goff The first and most important thing that people need to know is that Matthew Stafford was not going to play for the Detroit Lions in 2021. The team didn’t have a Quarterback, but did have a $19 million dead cap number. That was the table stakes, the reality the new front office and GM Brad Holmes had to deal with. When you look across the landscape of real possibilities, who else would have been a better replacement that Jared Goff? Toss in 2 upcoming first round picks, and a third round pick this year and the decision was a no-brainer. We wind up with a quarterback that has won playoff games, been to a Super Bowl and is just 26 years old leading a team on a trial basis during a rebuild. If he doesn’t work, we have plenty of ammunition to get “our guy” in 2022 or 2023 – the Lions have an amazing set of options. We also talk about Jared Goff as a player and discuss his abilities and flaws and contrast them against Matthew Stafford and his abilities and flaws. It just might be that the Lions and Rams have upgraded for the rosters and schemes they play. There’s More Than Jared Goff In Detroit We have a coaching staff that sees player who were hesitant and obviously had their confidence shaken last season. They played slower than they should have – seemingly afraid. We discuss why that is, what happened, and what qualifies this staff to turn that around. From there we discuss off-the-radar free agency pickups at the wide receiver position that just might interest a team like the Lions. There are some good talents out there for the Lions to grab. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon break down film from the first day of the 2021 NFL Senior Bowl and discuss options for the Lions at quarterback. Detroit Lions Podcast Senior Bowl Film Analysis Well, the Senior Bowl is dealing with some logistical issues related to the media and player interviews. We remain hopeful that this evening’s interview will go off as planned. The interviews are scheduled between 9pm and midnight ET, so if it’s cleared up we should have them then. We may possibly just record and release the next morning. That being said, we have access to the film from the Senior Bowl practices and wanted to do a walk-through of day one’s practice. We walk you through 25 plays from each team and share a coaching moment with a Miami Dolphins defensive line coach. Today’s show really gives you the vibe for what it’s like to be at the Senior Bowl. While you will hear all of our comments on each player’s film, the YouTube version of this show is really the best experience, as you will get to see exactly what we are talking about during our evaluations. Senior Bowl Coverage Kicks Off! It was recently announced that there will be no NFL Combine this year. Teams will be resorting to “pro days” to evaluate players and talent. This is a real blow to fans as they won’t have the coverage that they usually do in the lead up to the NFL Draft. This also makes the Senior Bowl practices much more important. We bring audio sound bites and discuss some of the nuances of what he’s saying and what it might mean for the Lions Detroit Lions Podcast Pumped Iron Immediately Afterward If the Lions were looking for a “Leader of Men”, they sure found one in Head Coach Dan Campbell. His opening press conference set NFL circles alight. If not viewed in its entirety, Dan Campbell could have looked a bit unhinged, but in its totality Campbell painted a cohesive picture of compatibility, cohesiveness, culture, and conquest. Henceforth referred to as the 4 C’s. Lions fans were ready to suit up and try out for the team as new Head Coach Dan Campbell preached the importance of servant leadership and focusing all levels of the organization on the vision for the team. Head Coach Dan Campbell understands Detroit. He felt the pain of the 0-16 season along with fans as a player on a team that couldn’t deliver to a city hungry for success from its beloved Lions. He wants to turn that around. He has a vision, and in partnership with Brad Holmes and Mike Disner, that vision is becoming a plan and a strategy. The time to move is now. Even as they get their coordinators in place, the Detroit Lions have just a few days to make their way down to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Sandman, and Jeff Risdon take a look at the Detroit Lions new hire at General Manager, Brad Holmes. News broke early this afternoon that the Detroit Lions Hired Brad Holmes as the organization’s new GM – a choice we all believe is a huge step in the right direction for this club’s front office. Detroit Lions Podcast Evaluates The Process We wanted to start the show out by evaluating the process the team followed in landing Brad Holmes as General Manager. Chris laid out what he was looking for from the organization in his vlog last week, and so far the Lions are delivering. The team was methodical, played no favorites, and landed on a top tier candidate in Brad Holmes as their General Manager. The team was measured, patient, and weren’t swayed by cries that other teams would “steal their guy”. They ran their process and got the GM they were after. Brad Holmes Shows Skills While Holmes hasn’t filled the General Manager’s seat previously, he has played a significant role in the ongoing success of the Los Angeles Rams, worked with a number of different coaches, and has helped build a perennial playoff team without having a first round pick in the last four years. He’s known for increasing the value of the Rams draft by trading away higher round picks and nailing his picks in the mid/late rounds – something the Lions are in dire need of currently. Additionally, with Matthew Stafford’s contract coming to an end in two years, being in a position to generate draft value could be an extreme need for the Lions to move on from Stafford if they need to. There is a lot of work to do in Detroit, and Brad Holmes appears to be the right pick at GM for the Lions current situation. Big News On YouTube! In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman discuss the last game of the Detroit Lions 2020-21 Football Season against the Minnesota Vikings. Poor officiating, a called back touchdown, a team that looked relatively competent even in a loss, this game just about had it all. At least all of what you’d expect in a Lions game. Minnesota Vikings Brought Their Own Officials Were they the reason the Lions lost? We’re not blaming them, but even fans of the Minnesota Vikings are complaining about the officiating in this game. Some are saying it cost them better draft position. One thing for certain, they made some terrible calls in this game. I can’t imagine how off the rails the fan base would be right now if the officials had called this game against the Minnesota Vikings and cost us a post season bid. One thing for sure, if you are the Lions, always clinch your playoff berth prior to the last game of the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Pushes Into The Off-season As much as we love football, mercifully we’ve entered the off-season. Things will be extremely busy this year with a new GM, and new coach, decisions at quarterback, and a complete defensive rebuild on the menu (at minimum). Tampa Bay Buccaneers Crush The Lions? We discuss the Lions chances against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it really doesn’t look good. The Bucs have a lot to play for, the Lions, not so much. The Lions have a bunch of all stars, the Lions need a hospital ship to care for all of the injuries. We’re not at a point of predicting whether Tampa will win, but more about how much they will win by. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman take a look at the Lions loss to the Tennessee Titans. Frankly, the best part of the game was the @DetLionsPodcast twitter account. Likely the best way a Lions fan could have fun while watching this game. The Tennessee Titans were held at bay for the most part during the first half, but once the third quarter started Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry had their way with the Lions. Tennessee Titans Carved Up The Lions Defense Big credit to Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans, they played their game and simply overpowered the hapless Lions. It has to be tough to be Corey Undlin with your shot at being a defensive coordinator without an overseer but doing so with a roster so devoid of talent. A much-loved interim coach and defensive coordinator isn’t enough to overcome a roster full of injuries and holes against a team as talented as the Tennessee Titans. Detroit Lions Podcast Ready For The Off-season We discuss the need for an overhaul of the team’s defense as well as the significant holes on offense. The Lions are on track to have none of their receivers reach the 1,000 yard mark for the first time since 2009. Think about that. This isn’t a reflection on Matthew Stafford, but the utter lack of talent and number of injuries to the receiving corps. It’s entirely possible that the Lions might not even have a running back reach 600 yards this year. A rebuild is on the menu, and it has to be done with 5 draft picks and a good bit of cap space. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and tony Ortiz take a look ahead to the Detroit Lions vs. Tennessee Titans game. We also take a look at what’s happened in the Lions GM search so far this week as well as evaluate the process so far. Tennessee Titans Tough to Stop One of the keys for the Lions against the Tennessee Titans is going to be their ability to score against the Titans defense. The Lions have a big question mark surrounding the health of Matthew Stafford, and he will be needed if the Lions have any hope against the Tennessee Titans. The good news is that the Tennessee titans run a very similar offense to what the Lions have for the last few years, so they have some experience in how to exploit it. That being said, the Titans offense and Derrick Henry is likely to run all over the Lions defense. We have the injury report, Las Vegas line, predictions and more preparing you for this game. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks GM Candidates We spend some time discussing the Lions GM search, and the process around it. The Lions have set themselves up much different than they did last time. In 2020 they are ensuring that they take the organization and its culture into the process, which is something they missed last time by outsourcing the work to the NFL’s suggested search “guru.” This is something that has been undersold for a long time, and the importance of culture, as well as its nuance are important considerations when making outside hires. It’s possible to foster a winning culture while still working within the organization’s mores. It’s a long show packed with a ton of information. Tennessee Titans Trap Many times in the NFL, teams are lulled into a sense of accomplishment in which they look past their next opponent. They believe they are good enough to beat a team that’s down on its luck, and don’t take them seriously. The Tennessee Titans are poised for just such an opportunity in their game against the Lions. A home game for the Tennessee Titans makes this the perfect setup. Mike Vrabel is a smart coach, and I don’t expect that to be the modus operandi for the Tennessee Titans this week, but as Lions fans, we can have hope, right? Also, the Lions played the Packers pretty tough, and have a team that is playing hard and fighting for interim coach, Darrell Bevell. It will definitely be an interesting game, The Tennessee Titans are a tough team, but if things land just right, we could see the Lions pull one out in an unlikely situation. Detroit Lions Podcast Loves The Chris Spielman Hire It was announced shortly before we recorded that the Lions had hired Chris Spielman as their “Special Assistant to Chairman and President & CEO”. There are a lot of “ands” in that title, so it sounds like a pretty big role. Its big enough that Spielman immediately resigned from calling games for Fox and jumped in with a fire and passion that might be just right for this team right now. We also discuss Matthew Stafford’s surrounding cast throughout his career and some talk about what might be going on with Kenny Golladay. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman share the good, the bad, and the ugly around the Detroit Lions loss to the Green Bay Packers. To be fair, it was a fun game and the Lions were competitive, but the Green Bay Packers has just a little more in the tank (with some help from the refs) and got it done. Green Bay Packers Games Have a Common Theme There is always controversy when the Lions play the Green Bay Packers. For some reason the officials seem to do their part to ensure a Packers victory when these teams meet. While it wasn’t as egregious a performance as the face mask game, the Lions wound up with an injured quarterback as a result of a terrible call on replay. Marvin caught it, we all know it and saw it, but evidently the officials felt that the Green Bay Packers needed a little extra help. Detroit Lions Podcast Still Saw A Fun Game For the Lions to only lose this game by a touchdown was surprising. Many teams have had 40 burgers hung on them by the Packers this year, and the Lions were able (with a hobbled defense) to keep the game competitive until the very end, and were never really out of it. The other thing that stands out, this was a fun game to watch. It’s been a long time since the Lions were this fun to watch, even in a loss this was a fun game for Lions fans. It’s something that we didn’t really notice until the Bears game, but Lions football had really become a chore to watch. These last two games have been extremely enjoyable. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and Tony Ortiz preview the Lions game against the Green Bay Packers. With a late game on Sunday the Green Bay Packers are coming to Detroit with Aaron Rodgers and hope to lay more of their brand of dominating football on the Lions. The Lions are fielding a number of injuries, some key, which isn’t going to help their chances. Green Bay Packers Are Favorites The Green Bay Packers are bringing a 9-3 record into Detroit to play a 5-7 Lions team lead by an interim coach who found a divisional victory in his first game since being promoted. This week is a whole different ball of wax, and the Lions are going to need every bounce to go their way in order to put the Packers down. Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones are at the top of their game right now, and Davante Adams could be the best wide receiver in the league at this point. The ‘Smith brothers’ on defense present a formidable challenge for the Lions offense, and help make the Green Bay Packers a total package. Detroit Lions Podcast Sets It Up The Lions have played the Packers pretty toughly the last few years, so there’s still hope for the Lions in this match-up. It’s not guaranteed to be all cheese wheels, but the Lions needs things to go their way. We discuss the injury report, key match-ups, keys to the game, the Vegas odds, and predict the final outcome. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the latest Detroit Lions news and information. We break down the win against the Chicago Bears, a look at a series of individual player performances, an analysis of the coaching change, a look ahead to the Green Bay Packers, and we take you ‘Around The Division’. Detroit Lions Podcast Coaching Analysis The Chicago Bears couldn’t hold the Lions down, and after some second half adjustments, the Lions defense finally showed up to a game. Coaches Darrell Bevell and Cory Undlin made some interesting changes to the scheme that gave the players more freedom to utilize their talents and to give fans an entertaining game against the Chicago Bears. It was finally a fun game to watch for Lions fans. The win certainly didn’t hurt but what a difference a coach makes to the enjoyment of a game. We discuss what else it might take for Interim Coach Darrell Bevell to hold down the head coaching position, and make a comparison to a much-loved Lions coach, Wayne Fontes. It was an entertaining game that one can’t help but think had a different outcome that it would have with the previous coaching regime. Green Bay Packers Are In The Way We look ahead to the Green Bay Packers knowing full well that they are one of the best teams in the NFC. There seems to be that little fact that the Lions have consistently played them very closely over the last few years, and the Lions players have a lot to play for. Getting a coach that makes things so much better and helps them have fun with the game they grew up with means a lot to a group of guys like this, and I’d be hard-pressed to say they don’t want to win for the guy that improved their lives so much. We don’t predict the Lions to win, but there’s that small glimmer of hope, and if they were to pull one out against the Green Bay Packers – just wow. After two division victories, Darrell Bevell could be on his way to his first permanent coaching position. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman kick off ‘Victory Sunday’ after the Lions win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. It was a classic Lions comeback led by Matthew Stafford and with an unexpected game-changing play by the Lions defense. Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell manages to achieve in a single game what Matt Patricia never could in his tenure with Detroit, beat the Chicago Bears – something worth celebrating. Heads up, this is a celebratory podcast. Lions fans deserve to have some fun and enjoy the victory, to savor it, and we’re here to help. Chicago Bears Kept Lions In The Game The Chicago Bears just couldn’t put the Lions away today, they took the leads with an early field goal, but the Lions hung around within striking distance for the entire game. Then, it happened. The defense came up with a crucial turnover and Matthew Stafford led the Lions to another comeback victory. This one was sweeter. After having lost to the Chicago Bears in the last 4 meetings, getting a victory on Bevell’s first game at the helm meant a lot. The game was more fun to watch, and the team reacted well to Bevell. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Changes Cory Undlin instituted a number of defensive changes, and they made a significant difference in the Lions results. So much so that the Lions only allowed 7 points in the second half. Previously the Lions have averaged more points allowed in the third quarter alone. We saw Matthew Stafford in the shotgun more than we used to, and to good effect. He was turned loose a bit more, and was able to do those Matthew Stafford things we’ve all grown to love. As a fan, the game was a heck of a lot more fun to watch. Overall a good game, with an excellent result and one worth celebrating. The Lions have a long road to recovery ahead, but this was the first step. If a player can get angry because a coach tells him he’s on his way to being a Calvin Johnson level receiver, you know damn well something like this can turn a locker room quickly. A Chicago Bears loss this week could very quickly spell the end of Matt Nagy’s time in Chicago with Ryan Pace likely to be right behind him. We discuss whether this gives the players something to play for or against this week, as it adds an interesting angle to the game. Sheila Ford Hamp and Rod Wood held a press conference after the news broke to take questions and delivered a clear message about the current situation. They also did a great job of leaving their options open as the process moves forward. Detroit Lions Podcast Gives Sheila Ford Hamp an ‘A’ Grade So Far Last year the Ford family gave a clear indication of what it would take for the current regime to survive, they didn’t meet the standard, and were thus let go. This is the first appearance by Sheila Ford Hamp in her role as team owner bringing significant change to the Lions organization, and she did so perfectly. Her delivery and ability not to box herself into a bad position with the press served her well in delivering the message of the day, while allowing the process to determine the road forward. So far a great leading hand by Ford Hamp. The Writing Was On The Wall For Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn We’ve discussed it extensively, but the loss to the Carolina Panthers was really the last straw for Matt Patricia as Detroit Lions head coach. We discussed Bob Quinn’s draft success in our last show, and it was obvious that he wasn’t performing where he needed to be either. While Mike Vrabel would have been our preference as head coach, there’s likely no possibility he would have done better with the talent that Bob Quinn gave him. We were all in on this duo, but they’ve shown they didn’t have what it took, and it’s time for the Lions to move toward their inevitable rebuild. We also chat about the Carolina Panthers game as a turning point for Coach Matt Patricia and General Manager Bob Quinn. The Houston Texans Present An Interesting Opponent The Houston Texans are having a dumpster fire of a year in 2020, much like the Detroit Lions. There isn’t a whole lot to play for beyond pride and conversely a draft position. Neither team’s leadership is in a position to care too much about draft position, so a game for pride it is. We walk through strengths and weaknesses of the Houston Texans, the injury report, and our final game predictions. Our recommendation? Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and don’t let the Lions (or the Houston Texans) wreck it for you. Its great background noise, but time with your family will be much more productive. Detroit Lions Podcast Looks At Bob Quinn’s Draft Results We take a bit to look back at Bob Quinn’s draft results and what they might mean for his future with the team. We’ll rank hit vs. miss and give you the overall hit percentage for Quinn. Spoiler alert – the team plays like they draft. It wasn’t just a game in which the Lions were defeated, but the way in which they lost that was incredibly demoralizing for fans. You could feel the spark of hope being snuffed as the game against the Carolina Panthers played out. Carolina Panthers Stronger Than The Score Indicates There were two touchdowns negated by interceptions in the end zone – but those occurred after the Carolina Panthers marched down the field on long strong drives. The Lions defense seemed to be on the field for the entire game. With no execution on offense, one can’t expect much more that a shutout – and that’s exactly what the Lions anemic offense offered up. We discuss the possibility of Matthew Stafford playing for the Lions after his trip to the Reserve/Covid list. It is possible, and there are some interesting logistics involved, but it’s still a possibility that Matthew Stafford plays. We talked about this game being a real test of the team, and frankly, the Lions failed against the Indianapolis Colts. It was a low energy, game in which the Indianapolis Colts overwhelmed the Lions in the trenches and set the tone for the entire game. While not pivotal to the game’s outcome, we got a nice dose of terrible officiating that we’ve become accustomed to over the years. Indianapolis Colts Beat The Lions Up! It all happened in the trenches. The offensive and defensive lines for the Indianapolis Colts just dominated the Lions this week. It was a clinic on how important an offensive and defensive line are in the NFL. Matthew Stafford was hit/sacked a number of times, and never looked very comfortable in the pocket. Couple that with a team that just couldn’t find energy and you get the shellacking that the Lions received today. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman kick off celebration Sunday after a great Lions win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Atlanta Falcons were a good test for a Lions team who needs to string a few wins together to have any hope of making this season relevant. For Matt Patricia, the Atlanta Falcons could very well have had his career in their hands. Instead, the Lions walk away with a win. The Atlanta Falcons Defense showed up! This game against the Atlanta Falcons was widely expected to be a shoot-out, with neither defense garnering a whole lot of respect around the league. The Lions were able to bring the defense that showed itself in Jacksonville on the trip to Atlanta, and the Falcons stepped up to ensure the Lions didn’t have an easy day of it. The result was a score that came in under the Vegas O/U by 15 points. The Atlanta Falcons are definitely a better team than their record shows, but for two away games in a row, the Lions were able to cinch up and walk away with a win. On different note, that’s coach Matt Patricia’s first two-win streak since he started coaching the Lions. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman help Lions fans celebrate the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions were able to play very well in all three phases of the game, which is not something we see very often from this team, and logged a convincing victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Is this something to look forward to, or was it a flash against a terrible team? Jacksonville Jaguars Aren’t A Good Team! There is an obvious argument that the Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t a good football team. Many Lions fans follow with, “this win is meaningless because the Jags stink!” While this may be true, the Jacksonville Jaguars are an NFL team with NFL-caliber talent. The Lions didn’t eke out a win, nor did they seem to struggle at any point. If you were to see this score in a Packers/Jaguars game, you’d feel that was “right”. Take the win and enjoy it, the Lions played well. Detroit Lions Podcast Still Has Questions With that there are questions that we will need to start asking right after victory Monday. Questions like, “Is Matthew Stafford back?” “Was this defensive showing the result of game plan, or has a real adjustment been made in the bye week?” “Will we see this defense again?” “Is D’Andre Swift really as good as he looked?” There are a lot of things to think about and a second watch this week will help. It’s been a big week on Twitter about the state of the Detroit Lions and their coaching staff. Many have brought out the knives for the Lions coach, Matt Patricia, and GM Bob Quinn as well. Some however, have a different opinion. Lawrence Jackson brought some real insight and thoughtful commentary this week, definitely worth checking out. Detroit Lions Podcast Puts The Arizona Cardinals Game Under Further Review The Detroit Lions played a great game against the Arizona Cardinals. The defense stepped up like it hasn’t so far in 2020, and it looked very good doing it. Chris debunks the narrative that the Lions didn’t win the game and that Kyler Murray lost it, with some help from Ash Thompson. The Lions stepped up in all three phases of the game to take that one away from the Arizona Cardinals, and are looking to do it again next week against the New Orleans Saints. The guys also discuss the lowering difficulty of the schedule after the bye week and what it could mean for the team’s performance on the year. Also, what it might mean insofar as the team keeping Matt Patricia as coach. There are many layers to this, and we start to work with some of them on what will certainly be a multi-week conversation. On To The New Orleans Saints This is where the Lions get their chance to show that they are truly heading in the right direction – Sunday afternoon at Ford Field against the New Orleans Saints. The Lions will definitely have to take the next step as a team, the offense and ball control is likely going to be key again against the New Orleans Saints. Alvin Kamara is going to be difficult to stop, and Drew Brees might be old, but no one thinks he’s washed up. The New Orleans Saints are coming off of two tough weeks of football and likely expect to roll over the Lions. This game is a statement game for Detroit – how they play against the New Orleans Saints this week may very well define their season. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Andy the Sandman to help you celebrate the Lions first win in eleven months, and they got it over the Arizona Cardinals. An unexpected event that was an excellent team effort by the Lions in all phases of the game. Kyler Murray didn’t have a great game, but much of that was forced by how the Lions attacked their offense. Lions Didn’t Let The Arizona Cardinals Take Off The Lions did a great job of containing Kyler Murray in the pocket other than on designed run plays. In doing so, they limited the Arizona Cardinals offense in a way that gave the Lions a chance to exchange scores throughout the game. The lead was traded between teams multiple times, but with solid play in all three phases of the game the Lions were able to stop Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals to set up Matthew Stafford’s Lions final drive. This put the Lions in position to run the clock out with a victory on a Matt Prater field goal. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees A Full Game From The Lions The win over the Arizona Cardinals started with a solid defensive performance, including the Jeff Okudah interception (his first) that Chris predicted on Friday’s show with Jeff Risdon and Tony Ortiz. The Lions defense has been lacking this year, but they were able to scheme around the Arizona Cardinals offense in a way that gave the Lions offense what they needed to pull out a victory in Arizona. As always we have a great show with insights you won’t get anywhere else! Arizona Cardinals Are The Favorites Here we are at game three of a season in which the Lions desperately need a win. They’ve had a tough schedule so far, and that difficulty level isn’t easing up. The Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murry aren’t going to make things much easier for the hapless Lions. The one thing the Lions have in their favor is that Arizona has the weakest defense the Lions have seen in the season so far – that’s something the Lions look to exploit. The Lions are going to need to put a lot of points on the board, and are hoping to see the Matthew Stafford of early 2019 on the field against the Arizona Cardinals, not the one who we’ve seen in 2020. We’ll talk about why there’s hope that this just might be the case. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Defense This is likely to be a tough test for rookie Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah as he’s likely to face off against the timeless Larry Fitzgerald, a wily vet who has the talent of a man many years younger. This is going to be a key match-up for the Lions, as is the defensive line. Kenyan Drake is always a threat, and Kyler Murray can run like no other. The Lions are going to need to take the ball away from the Arizona Cardinals, likely more than once, if they have any hope to win the game. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by the post-game brain known as Sandman. They discuss the Lions loss to the Green Bay Packers. It’s a big therapy week, and thus a pretty long show. If you need to find a way to get over the loss and have a couple of laughs along the way, we’ve got the salve you need. Green Bay Packers Sit Atop The Division No one thought it would be the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears at the top of the division with the Minnesota Vikings and Lions sitting winless after two game. The Packers are showing strong early this year, and the struggling Lions were an early casualty. The Lions have an extremely difficult start to the season and for all intents and purposes it looks like the team will be winless going into the bye week. Should we fire coach Matt Patricia now? Chris still says, “not yet”. Sandman tends to agree. Everyone agrees it’s a terrible place for the team and fans to be only two games into the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Let’s You Know When We talk about timing on the coach firing that seems inevitable at this point. While coach Matt Patricia still has a lot of season to work with before it can be determined if the Lions will be playing “meaningful games in December”, the fuse is definitely getting shorter. Chris will tell you when he think pulling the trigger makes the most sense, not just for immediate satisfaction, but for the long term health of the team. The boys also discuss their thinking on Bob Quinn’s future with the organization. In there we also discuss the game and the performance of players both for the Lions and Green Bay Packers (good and bad). Lastly, we take a ton of calls throughout the show – I have to say that by the end of the show we all agreed that the therapy worked and we were ready to move on. Detroit Lions Podcast Green Bay Preview After last Sunday’s game, listening to fans all week, and thinking the city was burning down, no one was feeling particularly great about facing the Green Bay Packers in week two. A perennial playoff contender with their second Hall of Fame quarterback in a row is never a fun place to go as a visiting team. Looking from a distance, this is a blowout win for the Packers, but we dive in a little deeper and see something a little different. We start with this week’s Lions and Green Bay Packers Injury Report. The Detroit Lions and Green Back Packers have a long history, but recently, the Lions have been really close, and had the Packers number. As a matter of fact, they’ve beat the Packers twice since they’ve beaten Chicago. This is a much better match-up than many would expect, and if both team show up in Lambeau it should be a highly contested game. Jeff Risdon and Tony Ortiz make their predictions, while Chris plays Case’s normal road and rides the fence a little bit. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Case for our weekly podcast. It’s been a tough start to the week after the Chicago Bears game, and Lions fans already want blood. We’ve done our re-watch, we’ve got the stats, and we talk about what went wrong, where this team is, and what to expect next week against the Green Bay Packers. Detroit Lions Podcast say R-E-L-A-X It’s not time to burn down the house. For perspective, 2020 has been a whirlwind of bad news, let’s all be thankful that we at least have football at this point. That being said, the Lions lost a close one in their first game against the Chicago Bears at Ford Field. This doesn’t foment a lot of hope for their chances against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau field. Reacting too harshly or too excitedly about the results of the first game of an NFL season is never good for one’s psychological health. Enjoy that we have football and if the team does poorly that the Coach will be gone. Or, conversely, enjoy the bounce-back that gets this team a playoff spot. Either way, enjoy the game of football. A lot of work went into making sure we could have it, and burning it (or each other) down with vitriol just isn’t worth it, nor is it healthy. There’s a lot of great stuff in this show, we take your calls, both live and on the Lions Line, we talk about Patricia’s tenure, and the starts and realities from Sunday’s Chicago Bears game. We quickly walk across the league, and then preview the Green Bay Packers game for listeners. Oh yeah, Clete Blakeman. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Andy the Sandman Morse and Case to look back on the Lions game against the Chicago Bears today. Detroit Lions Podcast Gets Your Reactions Well, this one didn’t end up how Lions fans wanted it to. After a slow start, the Lions seemed to bring things together to take a 17-point lead against the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, two familiar bugs bit this team, and left us with an all too familiar result. The first bug was the injury bug. We started the game down one cornerback, and by the end of the game we were down three. I don’t care who you are playing, in the NFL your 5th cornerback is going to get burned if you have to play him regularly during a game. The result was another bug bite – blowing a lead late in the game. This all too familiar feeling has been the bane of Lions fans for years. Starting a season off against the Chicago Bears (a team you expect to beat) and blowing a 17 point lead is no a way to win fans over. As we saw today, it’s a blueprint for mutiny. To be honest, I’ve never seen as much rage and anger in fans in years as I saw today. It was exponentially worse than any loss I can remember in recent history. It’s one game, there is a lot of season ahead, folks. Save some of that frustration, there will be plenty of opportunities to let it out as the year progresses. Detroit Lions Podcast Covers The 53 Man Roster Out of the chute we get into the Lions naming their 53 man roster. Of course the signing of Adrian Peterson (with all the AD vs. AP talk we just landed at ADP – he’s money after all, right?). We also cover the practice squad decisions, including the number of quarterbacks being carried on the roster (Case gets a chance to hold that over some folks’ head) while Chris crashes and burns on his Jason Huntley prediction. That one hurt. Oday Aboushi almost added to Chris’s embarrassment, but luckily Bob Quinn decided to bring him back onto the roster saving Chris from a double miss from the last show. Our mini preview of the Lions Bears makes some very important points about just how important this game is to GM Bob Quinn and Coach Matt Patricia. In just 10 days the Lions begin playing in anger, and there’s a lot of work yet to be done before the season starts. In this almost 2-hour episode we take you through everything in the Lions and NFC North to get you ready for the next 10 days. Detroit Lions Podcast – The Deck Hits Pay Dirt The first thing we cover is Taylor Decker’s payday. The Lions and Taylor Decker locked down one of the best win-win deals you’ll see for a left tackle in the NFL today. We discuss the nuances about the deal and why it’s a signal for where this team is going not only in the front office, but with its coaches, and players. It’s one of the biggest stories of the off-season. We also talk about some changes at the fullback position, it looks like Nick Bawden’s injuries may have cost him a gig in the NFL in the near-term. We loved him, but Jason Cabinda has come on strong. Love to have competition between great players, as good as Bawden was – even if he hadn’t gotten injured, Cabinda was likely to grab that role. Next we talk about cut day, coming up on Saturday (just 2 days from when this was recorded), and speak through who we think some surprise victims might be. Cuts are always hard, especially for the players themselves. No one likes this, but this year has a bit of a silver lining for fans… The Detroit Lions are going to cut some very talented players who will find work elsewhere in the NFL. There have been years where this hasn’t happened. Another sign of the Lions improving and getting better at seeking and drafting talent. Matthew Stafford Is Going To Be The NFL MVP He said so, there’s really nothing else to cover there. Lastly we go in-depth on the Lions upcoming season and land with our predictions. Last year the Riz predicted a 5-win season, everyone hated him for hit. He even got hate mail – really bad hate mail. Where does he think the Lions come in this year?
