Detroit Lions Podcast Preps For Hard Knocks The Detroit Lions have been selected for this year’s season of HBO’s Hard Knocks. What an amazing opportunity for the Lions to show their personality, heart, grit, and the culture that they are building in Allen Park. After some rock bottom years under Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn, the Detroit Lions have rejuvenated the organization’s culture in a year under the stewardship of Sheila Hamp, Brad Holmes, and Dan Campbell. This will certainly be on display for the rest of the league as HBO follows the team through the preseason. On the same day, the NFL announced that the 2024 NFL Draft will be held in the City of Detroit. This week Jeff Risdon is back while we get everyone up to speed in the Detroit Lions race to Free Agents in the NFL. There is a lot for the team to button up ahead of the open of NFL Free Agency on March 16. We’ll be joined for a portion of the show by special guest Scott Bischoff to cover many of the topics of the day. The Super Bowl is over, Matthew Stafford finally won himself a championship, it wasn’t in Detroit, so let’s move on. Now begins the biggest season of hope for the Detroit Lions, the offseason. With Free Agency coming followed by the 2022 NFL Draft, we decide to rank the Detroit Lions offseason needs in order from biggest need down to where they are most positionally secure. We’ll also start to contrast the Detroit Lions biggest free agent and draft needs against where that talent falls in the 2022 NFL Draft. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Coach Changes The Lions quietly made changes to the coaching staff by removing Inside Linebacker Coach Mark DeLeone. It took almost three days to break from when the change was made, congrats to Justin Rogers for chasing this down and reporting on it first. The team was very quiet about the change and wouldn’t elaborate on why the change was made. The 2022 off-season has begun for the Detroit Lions. Recently it was announced that the Lions will be coaching the American team at the 2022 Senior Bowl. This presents a great opportunity for Dan Campbell, Brad Holmes, and the rest of the Lions staff to get an up-close and personal look at some of the top prospects in the NFL Draft. The 2021 NFL Season has ended for the Lions. The Detroit Lions met the Green Bay Packers for the second time in the 2021 NFL season, this time at Ford Field. Both teams have pretty much set their respective positions in the playoffs or draft, so this game is about something a little different. After a close loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Detroit Lions are watching the season wind down with only two wins notched. Two games left means two more bites at the apple, two more opportunities to come up with another win. The Seattle Seahawks likely provide the best opportunity for the Lions in the remaining games. The decimated Lions travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Lions have achieved in a strange way this season. Playing poorly against teams that they were supposed to beat while playing tight and even beating teams that were supposed to crush them. Its a sort of Yin-Yang, push-pull, giving fans “the ole in and out” (hat-tip: Clockwork Orange). They’ve proved supremely competent at building a strong culture amongst players, coaches, and in the front office that will definitely carry this team forward. After the Detroit Lions convincing win over Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. Interestingly, the Cardinals have never beaten Jared Goff, so he’s kept that streak intact. Well, its happened. The Lions have beaten a team 5 or more games over .500 for the first time since most of you started watching football. Not only did the Detroit Lions beat the Arizona Cardinals, they pummeled them into submission. No one in the NFL expected this to happen . Well, Chris laid out this exact scenario in the Game Preview show with Tony Ortiz, but other than that, no one else did. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees A Quick Turn This Detroit Lions team is sneaky good. Looking at the team’s record one wouldn’t think so, maybe if you see the win against Arizona, but one could write that off as “any given Sunday”, but with the difference of 4 field goals, the Lions would be second in the division right now. Some are going to lament not drafting first overall, but this team might be a whole lot better than where they are drafting already. Couple that with the capital they have available in the draft over the next two years, the money they’ve cleared from the cap this year, and all of a sudden free agency and the draft could push this team to new heights. The rest of the NFL might just lament a team as sneaky good as the Detroit Lions having this kind of draft capital and position. Likely one of the top candidates to go from worst to first in 2022…. As the walking wounded Detroit Lions limp toward the end of the 2021 NFL season, they meet one of the top teams in the NFC, the Arizona Cardinals, at Ford Field. This is one of those games where the Lions have no expectation of coming away victorious. Yet, their season has been one where fans can always expect the unexpected. Could this be, “Any Given Sunday” for the Lions? Detroit Lions Podcast Takes Stock Knowing the team is in a rebuild and then sacrificing over $113 million of their roster to injuries and dead cap, it was a year of austerity beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Now’s the time! The Detroit Lions can exert their dominance over one of the top teams in the NFC in this week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals at Ford Field. A fully healthy Lions team have been notching victories week by week in their march to the world championship, and Arizona looks to be just another casualty on the Lions way to NFL dominance. Detroit Lions Podcast Jolts Upright In A Cold Sweat Oh if that were more than just a dream. Instead the Lions are mired in the last quarter of the 2021 NFL season, decimated by injuries and dead cap to the tune of $113 million. Basically 2/3 of their cap is tied up in people who aren’t on the field for the team. Obviously its difficult to compete with the best in the NFL at 2/3 the cost of talent, but the Lions haven’t really been as bad as one would think – they have a slim shot against the Cardinals. Coming out of the Lions loss to the Broncos, which was to be expected given the nature of their health and injury status, the Lions look to lick their wounds and face their toughest opponent yet – the Arizona Cardinals. I’m not sure anyone is predicting victory for the Lions here… Detroit Lions Podcast Keeps It Real One interesting point, the Lions played well against the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season, and the Rams just beat the Cardinals. So by the transitive property, the Lions would have a chance. Looking at how this year has gone, we’d say the Lions would play well and lose. Coming off of their first win of the 2021 NFL season the Detroit Lions face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. After last week’s victory, Lions fans felt pretty good about the Lions chances against the Broncos, until the week took shape and illness started to break out in Allen Park. Detroit Lions Podcast Feels Fine It started on Tuesday when Dan Campbell told Detroit Lions fans that Jared Goff had missed practice due to a flu-like illness that “wasn’t Covid-19”. As the week wore on much of the defense and members of the offense fell ill with the flu-like illness, so much so that the team upped their protocols as if it was a Covid-19 outbreak. Then, we find that at least 6 players are on the reserve/COVID-19 list. A number of players have been called up from the practice squad in an attempt to bolster the newfound roster holes. This is terrible news for a team that has already been devastat4ed by injury in the 2021 NFL season. How will the team fare? So here we are, 12 weeks into the 2021 NFL season, and the Detroit Lions have yet to notch a win. They’ve been close against teams that they shouldn’t even have been in games with. The Detroit Lions continue to look for that elusive first win of the 2021 NFL season. The first for Dan Campbell as the Lions coach, the first in the NFL for a number of young players, and the first indication that this team is turning things around. The Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears might be just the ticket the Lions need. Detroit Lions Podcast Fires Matt Nagy In a unique move, it appears as though the team has informed Matt Nagy that he will no longer be coaching the Chicago Bears after the Thanksgiving game at Ford Field. While Lions fans were hoping that they could help the Bears hang on to Nagy for another year as their head coach, it’s gotten to the point that potentially winning against the Lions isn’t enough to help a head coach keep his job in the NFL. There is a lot of motivation for both teams to win this game – for the Lions, finally getting that first win and doing so on the national stage would make this a statement game about a turnaround that is officially underway for the franchise. For the Bears, an opportunity to send off the coach who believed with them and put them on this team together. One thing for sure, Thursday’s game is destined to be one to remember. Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Post Game Show! As we head to the first game after the Detroit Lions didn’t lose in the 2021 NFL season, the Lions are pretty big underdogs against the Cleveland Browns at First Energy Stadium. The weather looks like conditions will be similar to what we saw in last week’s tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers – so expect the unexpected. Detroit Lions Podcast Reacts After what can only be termed a frustrating tie in Pittsburgh, in which Dan Campbell took over play calling duties and directly attacked the strengths of the Steelers (with great success), the list of Lions walking wounded gets longer. Today we host our Game Preview for the battle between the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns in week 11 of the 2021 NFL season. Detroit Lions Podcast Game Preview The 5-4 Browns are coming off of a 45-7 shellacking in New England by the Patriots. The injury-decimated Lions made a strong showing last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers falling just short of a win (again) with a 16-16 tie in a weather-hampered game. Jared Goff injured his oblique, leaving Tim Boyle in line to start for the Lions this week. We’ll be sure to have the latest update when we cover the Lions injury report. The Detroit Lions yet again managed to do what no one expected. Chris was laughed at for saying the Lions could beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he was right, they could have. Instead, they avoided losing out the season by landing a tie against the Steelers at Heinz Field. Its a perfect fit for the ongoing story of the Detroit Lions 2021 NFL season. Detroit Lions Podcast Takes Stock While the Lions didn’t win the game, they didn’t lose either, and with quarterback Jared Goff suffering an oblique injury, the Lions are likely to test out their backup quarterbacks and add a whole new level of angst to fans for the season. Its a no win scenario really, Boyle or Blough sizzle? The crucifixion of Jared Goff will be locked in. They stink, and the questions about the direction of the team will be legion. The Detroit Lions Fell absolutely flat against the Philadelphia Eagles – an unlikely loss that very few expected. Well, that just happened. The Detroit Lions went to SoFi Stadium to play the Los Angeles Rams and played their hearts out in a game that was much closer than the score would reveal. Chris was there and will report on all things SoFi Stadium and the Lions Rams experience. Detroit Lions Podcast Was There The team came close. In a game in which they were 16.5 point underdogs, the Detroit Lions succumbed to the Rams late after Matthew Stafford absolutely abused CB Daryl Worley when he stepped in for an injured AJ Parker. That being said, they beat the heck out of the point spread. Worley’s performance was so bad, that he’s already been cut. Its not unexpected, when you are already working in 4th and 5th string players to cover for injuries, eventually you’re going to hit the talent cliff. That’s what happened with Worley. A valiant effort by the Lions who are still looking for their first win after meeting the LA Rams. That said, their best chance of the season for a win so far comes this week when the Detroit Lions play host to the Philadelphia Eagles. Expectations amongst fans are high for the Lions to return to the same form they showed in Los Angeles which should be enough to clip the Philadelphia Eagles wings. All in all, the loss to the Minnesota Vikings might have been worse for them than it was for the Detroit Lions. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Strength For the Lions, a group of scrappy young guys who many thought lacked NFL caliber talent stood up and played hard until the clock hit ‘0’. When it did, they lost by a field goal set up by one player being out of position on the play before. The team is close and the coaching is strong. There are wins to be had. Additionally, the team has been plagued by injuries. They rack up with Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow going to IR for the remainder of the season after having surgery on his toe. Some rookies (like our favorite UDFA CB Jerry Jacobs) are stepping up and showing what they can do – and we saw a lot. Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson did not have the day that anyone expected against the Lions secondary. Its been a tough week for Detroit Lions fans. So that happened. Again. The officials really put it to the Detroit Lions and their fans in the game against the Baltimore Ravens. In a game where the Lions did enough to win and the Ravens did enough to lose, the officials decided to lean into the game so it would end based on their absolute joke of blown calls. Lions fans again walk away asking themselves if the NFL is rigged in 2021.
