While the NFL hasn’t been forthcoming with any of their work in this area, we discuss what we would be doing in the background if we were the league. Finally, we give a nod to Jamie Samuelson, a man who was an absolute credit to the Detroit Sports Writer scene. A stand-up guy who was loved by all and taken from us far too quickly. This year is different than years past for obvious reasons, so the guys figured it would be best to help everyone understand the new process. We also discuss the NFL Top 100 list, Covid Cats™, Opt Outs, Free Agency, and take you on a quick dash around the division. Detroit Lions Podcast Ready For Football We walk you through The Covid Cats™ list – which is our term for the Detroit Lions Covid Reserve List. We’ll help you understand who is on it, why, what to expect while they’re on it, and what it takes to get off the list. We also discuss how this provides players and clubs some needed flexibility considering the surrounding circumstances. We also talk about who has opted out of the season so far and what that means for both the player and the team. After that we dive into the precautions that are being taken by the Lions under the NFL regulations and the ones they self-prescribed that are above and beyond. The Lions are one of the first 4 teams to have their plan approved by the NFL, and it shows as to why. It’s a well thought out plan that considers a number of factors. From there we get into the NFL Top 100 vote and why the Lions not having anyone listed in the top 100 is a galaxy brain move. The salary cap and spending has become a question for a few people and we go into Bob Quinn’s explanation as to why we aren’t spending like some people believe we should be. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is rejoined by Case for what looks to be our last show before the start of Lions Training Camp. Case finally shook himself free of the shackles of his job and was able to do some podcasting. Always great to have him and his insights. Detroit Lions Podcast Football News We cover a lot of ground in almost an hour and a half of podcasting today. First we take a look at some insider info on college football after Chris was able to glean some info from his Georgia Tech player pal. Small team practices started this week, so keep your eyes open. The ACC should be announcing their plans very shortly, we’ll let you know when we do. Chris decided to give Dean Blandino an unexpected call to get his thoughts on what the refs might look like since there is no preseason. He discussed it in depth on his great podcast, “Good Calls With Dean Blandino”. No matter your thoughts on Dean, he does a great show. Either way, he shares some excellent insight on his thoughts on how the refs might have early trouble without the ability to have a preseason this year. Good stuff. Always fun to give someone a surprise call on the show. We also discuss the conversation that has been happening around a rating that put Bob Quinn at the bottom of the NFL GM barrel. We tend to disagree, but history is written by the victors, so the story has yet to be fully told. Also, Eric Ebron proves that not only can’t catch, but he can’t math either. We have fun at his expense (again) and then ask for callers to share their least favorite Lions of all time. That wound up being pretty fun. We also get into an excellent piece that Chris Burke found a great piece by Warren Sharp of Sharp Football discussing a tendency of the Detroit Lions offense in 2019. She has a lot to offer the team and has been quite involved (by all reports) for a while now. We talk about Martha’s time as owner and give her high marks for what she has done to transform the team and its identity. Her time at the helm will be remembered well. We discuss where we would have liked to see Ford Hamp take action upon taking the reins and what she could do in the near future to seal her position and put her stamp on the team. In the end we discuss the effect of the move and share our thoughts on some of the fan feedback that’s been posted in various forums. Locking Down Our Left Guard Jonah Jackson has finally signed his contract and is officially a Detroit Lions player. This is a great pick that will have an impact, so it’s good to lock him down and have the paperwork done. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case break down the results of the Detroit Lions 2020 NFL Draft. Bob Quinn likely had his best draft ever as General Manager of the Detroit Lions. There were points where we were dumbfounded by his moves – but only because he was picking up talent in places we totally didn’t expect. Mr. Quinn did an excellent job of finding the best players available to fill key areas of need. We think that’s what made this draft so darn good for the Lions. While unlikely, it is possible that every player the Lions drafted could play this year – that’s a great draft. We even think there’s a UDFA who is almost guaranteed a roster position. Slay opened up about a situation early in his relationship with Coach Patricia in which Coach used some profanity. Slay took it very personally, when it was likely meant differently. After that, Slay harbored his anger for at least two years before letting loose on the radio and taking a few shots at Coach Patricia on the way out the door. Effectively, he set the place on fire as he left. Obviously nothing good could come of Slay’s comments, but here we are. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is once again joined by his old friend Case. Some might remember him fondly as the co-host of the show. Case comes back strong to make up for his absence by conducting our first dive into Free Agency. We call it, “a deep dive into the shallow end with Case”. He does a good job walking through the positions and helping folks start their thinking about where the Lions might be heading. It looks like Quarterback Coach Sean Ryan will remain with the team. This is great news. He’s a hot commodity in the NFL and sure to find a nice promotion next year. The news that made more headlines is the hiring of new Defensive Coordinator, Cory Undlin from the Eagles. Responses have been all over the board and speculation has been widespread about what it means. We take a look at some data and wind up with a more measured response to the hire. We follow up with some great social media posts (Reddit and Twitter) that we wanted to use to showcase the great stuff that people are putting together. Cory Undlin has a lot to offer and could wind up being a masterful choice. My expectation is that we will end up feeling as good about the Cory Undlin hire as we do about Darrell Bevell. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case are back together again to take a heartfelt look at the situation in Allen Park and try to help folks come to an understanding of what exactly we are looking at. There has been a convergence of many things to hit the team this year. We’re here to try and help Detroit Lions fans make sense of it all. We also review the Redskins game and what we can learn from that. From there, we revisit the Matthew Stafford situation and think about what the rest of the year holds for him. From there, we spend some time discussing what the rest of the year might look like for this team. Additionally, we try to help set expectations and give you some things to look for. Lastly, we look ahead to the game against Chicago in the annual Thanksgiving game. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Chicago Bears Before we get into the Bears, we have to take a brief stop on the Washington Redskins express. What a gut punch. A completely unexpected outcome presented itself to a Lions fan base that were looking for something, anything, to hang their hat on. It didn’t come in Washington at the Redskins expense. Now the Lions face a short week ahead of the Thanksgiving Day game against the Chicago Bears. The Detroit Lions Podcast takes some time to talk about where the team, the fans, and the coaching staff are today. We take a look at who else has been in similar circumstances, and we lament the loss of another year of possibility for our favorite football team. Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn focus heavily in this conversation, and rightfully so. Do they deserve all that they are getting right now? Not all of it. We’ll help sort wheat and chaff here. Detroit Lions Podcast Laments Lions Injuries Chris woke to the news of Matthew Stafford being out for today’s game and really wanted to go back to bed. This Lions team is built upon the idea that the offense will score enough point to win games. The entire team has been place upon Matthew Stafford’s shoulders. With an injury there, the Lions are in big trouble. Jeff Driskel did an admirable job leading the team on late notice, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the hapless Chicago Bears. The Lions basically populated the field with second stringers today. The team is made of critical injuries and walking wounded amongst its star players right now. The produce on the field showed just how bad things are. With this loss, it’s time to write off the Lions playoff hopes for the season, but there are a number of things this team can still accomplish. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Detroit Lions subreddit moderator, Punk Rawkin’ Trev. We fire the studio up discuss the Lions home win over the New York Giants and take your calls. This was a game the Lions were expected to win, though the New York Giants were able to field their entire offense for the first time this season. That offense included Lions fan favorite Golden Tate – he definitely gets some talk time. This was a solid win for the Lions, but it still left fans with some questions. Detroit Lions Podcast Calls This A Foundational Win Even though the Lions were projected to win, Lions fans know every game has its opportunities for disappointment. The Giants were able to make it seem like a game during garbage time when they came within 5 points of the Lions. They chose the inevitable onside kick, but luckily the Lions played it perfectly and the ball rolled out of bounds. Nothing like ending the game in the victory formation. This win brings the Lions record to 3-3-1 with a number of winnable games ahead. In a return to our happy place, The Detroit Lions Podcast doesn’t need to provide a therapy session after this week’s game! There are still plenty of things to take away from this game that the team needs to work on, but for the most part, the team quieted doubters in the short term. As is always the case, we take your calls and discuss the team’s performance in today’s game. There could be a number of things at play here, and we’re certain that there was more to the story that we’ve heard so far. Detroit Lions Podcast Demands Change The talk of the day Tuesday was the epic failure of the officials in the Monday Night Football game. This should never happen to another team. You couldn’t even see the chess match that is coaching strategy. Success of effort on the field – immolated. It was all overshadowed by terrible officiating. A third, supposedly uninvolved party, changed the game. They’ve done so for countless NFL teams. The Lions have had their share of bad calls, but we don’t corner the market. It’s time to take action. Our best bet as fans is to engage the players and make this a part of the CBA negotiation. Its where we have a shot at the real money, which is all that matters to the NFL. The players are the only people with power against the NFL – we need to engage them. Players can improve their careers, safety, and bonuses and force the league to change the way officiating is handled. Fans can finally force the owners to provide a product they can believe in. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Dean Blandino to discuss the most recent week’s Lions officiating controversy. This game presented a number of opportunities to look at officiating, why specific calls were made, and why others weren’t. Dean also takes your calls and answers your questions directly. Eventually, Chris has to ask the question that all of the keyboard warriors were afraid to ask. Detroit Lions Podcast Is Official This game against the Kansas City Chiefs was a thriller. You could tell the Lions have turned a corner as a team and the future is bright in Detroit. Unfortunately, the team had to play through a number of calls that didn’t necessarily go the teams’ way. Previous Lions teams might have folded and ended the game in a hopeless loss. This Lions team was in it to the very last play. While the scoreboard didn’t show the score Lions fans hoped for, the team showed that they are made of something much different than before. This is the stuff that competitors are made of. It might be just the stuff winners are made of. Dean talks about the points of the officiating in the game that fans have an issue with and tells us where good calls were made (and why) as well as where officiating mistakes were made. We also take a broader look at the rules of the game and discuss changes we’d like to see there. Lastly, we open the calls to the fans and allow folks to directly ask Dean what’s been on their mind about anything at all. Where Are You Tough Guys? In the end, the keyboard warriors were afraid to call, so Chris asked the question that all the tough guys wanted to know about. Dean goes into the infamous ‘Party Bus’ situation and explains how it all went down, who was involved (nope, no hookers or blow), and the significant issue of the timeline. In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Ash Thompson to discuss the Lions home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. In another game in which the Lions were projected to lose, the Lions took the Chiefs to the last play of the game. The national conversation about the Lions will certainly change for the better after this showing. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to take away a win. The good news is that this was still a statement game in which the Lions showed they could play on the same level as a Super Bowl contender. We’re here to help you understand the perspective. Detroit Lions Podcast Calls Out A Culture Change This team has never had a loss that gave the fan base so much hope. The team played for a full 60 minutes and showed that they can not only hang with the best the NFL has to offer, but could even beat them. In the Fox pregame show, Michael Strahan predicted the Chiefs by 14 points. After this game, his tune about the Lions is going to have to change. The entire conversation about the Lions will change at the national level. This team has shown that it can play big boy football, and they put the NFC North on notice today. We take your calls and discuss the role of the officials in today’s game. There is a ton of opportunity for controversy here, but we believe that good teams overcome the officials’ impact today. Chris has never seen a fan base happier after a loss than those he spoke with today. The optimism is well founded. Big show, lots to talk about, and a fine way to head into the bye.
