Ep: 197 – Draft, FA, Senior Bowl, Dean Blandino, And Coaching Hires, Oh My… – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case pull out all the stops. Chris brings back his report from his trip to the Senior Bowl, we break down who is jumping into the Free Agency pool, Take an early look at the draft, Dean Blandino joins us to talk about the call in the New Orleans Saints and LA Rams game, and Jeff Risdon props his sick body up, and loses his pants, to talk about the Detroit Lions new QB coach hire. Oh, and Justin Rodgers makes a brief (hilarious) appearance prior to joining us for some long form stuff in an upcoming show. It’s an epic show this week! The Detroit Lions Podcast Brings Out The Big Guns Things start off normally enough, Chris gets a surprise shot in on Case (with some help from Justin Rodgers of the Detroit News) and they break into a discussion about free agency and the players being added to the availability pool. There are some nice pieces in there that could really help the Detroit Lions. There is one in particular that has Case’s radar pinging – and it’s hard to disagree with him. From there we talk about the sad situation with Trevor Bates. Hopefully he gets some help and everything can smooth itself over for everyone. No one is a winner here. Next we start breaking down some draft scenarios and prospects and how things may have changed with the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell. There’s a new sheriff in town, and that means a new approach. Bevell shared some great thinking during the hiring process. The Detroit Lions Podcast can’t wait to see what he does with the talent on this team. From here, Chris does his report on what he saw and experienced at the Senior Bowl this year. Chris brings you to the “Elephant Walk” and talks about who he sat with, and his approach to evaluation this year. He also breaks down his top players to watch based upon their performances at practice last week. There’s a lot of good info here on a number of players – some of who just might wind up on the Lions roster. Dean Blandino Joins Us Again Dean Blandino joins the Detroit Lions Podcast to discuss the controversial non-call in the LA Rams and New Orleans Saints game. He breaks down the play itself, the role of the officials, and what happened on the field. He also takes time to discuss what will happen within the ranks of the officials and how things may and may not change going forward. After that we break away from talking about officiating and discuss the Super Bowl LII match up. Dean predicts a winner you never expected. Lastly, with the breaking news about the hiring of Sean Ryan as QB Coach for Matthew Stafford, Chris and Case call up the sickened corpse of Jeff Risdon and get him to weigh in on the hire. Suffice it to say, he’s quite the happy camper, despite his illness. This episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast is jam packed. Don’t miss it. Ep: 196 – Free Agency and Draft Talk Begins – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case are joined live in studio by Jeff Risdon. Jeff is in town to cover the Shrine game, and from there he and Chris will be heading off to cover the Senior Bowl and dig deep on key draft prospects for the Detroit Lions. Case does Free Agency, and evidently there was some coach hired that we should talk about… Detroit Lions Podcast Welcomes Darrell Bevell The biggest piece of business this week is to cover the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell. To say that everyone is surprised would be an understatement. The beat media folks knew someone was coming but had no idea who. It was fun to watch everyone scramble, research, speculate, and finally report on what he brought to the team. Masterful work by the Detroit Lions in keeping things quiet and getting their guy. Risdon also talks about who else might have wanted him but *didn’t* wind up getting him. Overall, this looks like a good hire for the team. One which brings optimism for the future. Don’t worry, the Detroit Lions Podcast counts the ways. After that we get our first cut on Free Agency from Case. He finds himself lining up very closely with Justin Rodgers’ thinking from the Detroit News. He takes us through a number of positions and points out where there are possible fits, where there are gaps between needs and player availability, and which players we just might need to pay attention to. Jeff Risdon drops a little nugget on a CB to keep an eye on as well. Good stuff, the Detroit Lions Podcast fires up your Free Agency thinking. Draft Coverage Goes Big From there we move into Jeff’s coverage of the Shrine Game practices this week. He gives a great breakdown of what the game is all about, some famous names who have been here before, and who to look for. He also has a few fun stories about some player/coach interactions. Don’t overlook this game. Detroit Lions like Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner, and Quandre Diggs all came up out of the Shrine Game. If you care about the draft, it’s definitely worth your time. The Detroit Lions Podcast also lets loose on the expanded coverage you’re going to see from the Senior Bowl. Jeff, Sandman, and Chris will all be there bringing you the latest news livestreamed from the sidelines in a Daily Diary as well as next week’s podcast in a video format. We might just find a special guest to join us… Subscribe to our YouTube channel and enable notifications to see it all happen live. Ep: 195 – Lions OC Hunt Continues – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take ahold of the microphones while Jeff Risdon is away covering the Jim Bob Cooter interview with the Cleveland Browns for Brownswire – poor guy. Fear not, the boys fight through Case’s failing internet connection to bring you the most important and pertinent Detroit Lions news today. They also talk about another leap that the show will be taking as we push to bring you the best Lions content in the most engaging formats. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Hires and Fires The first order of business this week is to cover the recent front office move at the Vice President of Football Operations position. Bob Quinn hire Matt Harriss is out and Mike Disner is in. Chris calls an immediate Super Bowl victory as a result. Case tempers Chris’s enthusiasm with talk about finance, the time value of money, and spreadsheets. Suffice it to say, we won’t be hearing much from Matt in the coming year. Then we get into the boring stuff and talk about Offensive Coordinator candidates. Things seem pretty quiet around the team right now and everyone knows, that’s when a Lion strikes. The Detroit Lions Podcast discusses some of the previous possibilities that were mocked the Lions way, many of which have now been hired elsewhere. Still a pretty wide open group of candidates to choose from, and no real indications from the team as to where they may be looking. After pillorying Michael David Smith of PFT, we look ahead to next year’s schedule. As of today the breakdown of who we play and where we play them seems to favor the Lions bringing us the more difficult teams at home and some of the easier ones on the road. There is a lot of offseason to go, but it felt right to take an early look. Heading Around The Division After that we take the longest look ‘Around the Division’ that we’ve had in the show’s history. We start with the Chicago Bears and have a little fun at their expense as a result of their elimination from the playoffs last week. From there we walk over the Green Bay Packers and their new head coach hire on the way to poke the Minnesota Vikings a bit. Let us know what you think about the show by commenting in the podcast thread in the subreddit, or by leaving us a voice mail message via Skype at: Detroit Lions Podcast Your input will help make the show better, and if you leave us a message on Skype, you just might be featured in an upcoming Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 194 – The End Of The Cooter Era – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Case, and Jeff “the Riz” Risdon discuss the latest Detroit Lions news. We cover the game against the Packers and also kick off our “Play with the Podcast” events. We also share the final positions from the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League. From there we go in-depth on Jim Bob Cooter, what happened, what it means, and analyze the top candidates. We also break down other changes we might see in the coaching staff, including the Defensive Coordinator. Finally, we try to quell the Stafford trade talk. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Wins, baby! The first order of business is the big win for the Lions over the Green Bay Packers. Even with three of us hosting, we forgot to mention Matt Prater’s amazing touchdown pass. We take time to talk about Zach Zenner, how he might fit going forward, and how this team has obviously not given up on their coaches. From there we bring back “Play with the Podcast” where you can join us on Xbox and get some high quality gaming time in with us. We also break down the big winners of the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League and congratulate them on landing in the money. Detroit Lions Part With Jim Bob Cooter Next we discuss the separation between Jim Bob Cooter and the Detroit Lions. Jim Bob’s contract ended on the 31st of December, and the team decided not to renew with him. This allows Cooter to take part in any number of interviews (there is significant interest) and the Lions to move forward with improving their offensive capabilities. That discussion wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t vet a number of available candidates and weigh how they might fit within the organization and what they bring. Also, we discuss the possible effects on Matthew Stafford. Also, the Detroit Lions Podcast talks about the likelihood of hiring a new Defensive Coordinator. He makes the case as to why it might be “on the table” and why Matt Patricia could be the biggest beneficiary of such a move. Don’t worry, Coach Pasqualoni likely wouldn’t be going anywhere… Stop Talking About Trading Matthew Stafford Additionally, we discuss the trade rumors that have swirled around Matthew Stafford and share a bit of insider info on the team and how the Detroit vs. Everybody mindset might be alienating players. We’ll be going more in-depth on that in future episodes. Ep: 193 – Lions Look To The Green Bay Packers – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take on the latest in Detroit Lions news and provide insights and opinions on a number of hot topics. We’ll look at the Vikings game, the draft, Matt Millen’s current situation, the 9-7 Bob Quinn quote, info about the meta around a new Offensive Coordinator and a whole lot more. Detroit Lions Podcast Gets Going This week we begin by reviewing the Lions loss to the Minnesota Vikings. We discuss the vast difference between how the defense started the game vs how they finished. We also talk about the abysmal offensive performance put on display. There is no reason to think Jim Bob Cooter will survive to coach another season in Detroit. From there we take a look at the draft and some of the top 1st round possibilities for the Lions. Case shares his thoughts and we discuss how we are going to dive in on our coverage this offseason. We’ll cap pre-draft coverage off with the amazing Detroit Lions Podcast Annual Draft Party/Spectacular. We’re putting a lot into the prospects this year to help you get the best info possible heading into what could be one of the most important drafts in the Detroit Lions recent history. Matt Millen Gets A Life-Saving Gift From there we move on to discuss Matt Millen and his current situation. You may not like him as a GM, but he is a part of the Detroit Lions football history. We wish him the very best recovery possible, and maybe one day we can get a redemption arc for him and the Lions. All that isn’t even scratching the surface. The Detroit Lions Podcast covers the Bob Quinn, “9-7 isn’t good enough” quote. Next, we cover the story about potential offensive coordinators and a narrative that’s brewing around Matt Patricia and his thinking there. We also take a look to the upcoming Green Bay Packers game, and a whole lot more. Ep: 192 – Lions Look To The Minnesota Vikings – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by a fan favorite, Jeff Risdon, as a result of Case being ill. We cover a number of topics this week including the Bills game, Lions past talent finding success elsewhere, we provide a Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League update, talk draft, Pro Bowl, and a whole lot more There’s a ton to cover and we dive right in. Detroit Lions Podcast Breaks It Down This week we begin by reviewing the Lions loss to the Buffalo Bills. There’s the Matt Prater topic to cover, how the defense is performing (kudos to Snacks, A’Shawn Robinson, Romeo Okwara, Jarrad Davis, Darius Slay, and Devon Kennard) We discuss the life and times of Jim Bob Cooter and where talent that used to play for him on the Lions has landed and how they are performing today. It leads to an interesting discussion about the team and player development. Then we celebrate the top teams in the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League. There are four leagues, in which four teams are vying for the top three positions. It just so happens that one of Chris’s team is one of them – in the Champions League. His story of just how he landed on his players and how his team has performed just might shock you… A total knucklehead. From there we move on to the 2019 NFL Draft. Jeff Risdon weighs in on where he thinks the Detroit Lions will be drafting and makes his pick for the Lions in the first round. Its early days and there is still a bunch of data to mine on this, but as of today Jeff has his #1 identified. We discuss some of the research opportunities that happen between now and the draft such as the Shrine Game, Senior Bowl, Combine, and a whole lot more. Chris will be attending all of these with Jeff to ensure we have the best coverage and analysis on the Detroit Lions draft for your consumption. We’re going all in on the draft this year. A Lot More To Discuss There’s so much more. We talk about who made the Pro Bowl from the Lions and who was snubbed. Chris comes up with an alternative to that crappy game that might make football exciting that weekend while still recognizing NFL players appropriately. We also cover Titus Young’s release from prison, look ahead to the game against the Minnesota Vikings, and Chris and Jeff Risdon tag team the ‘Around The Division’ segment. Lastly, hand around until the very end of the show for some hilarious audio from Kelly Stafford. Great stuff. Ep: 190 – Lions Look To The Buffalo Bills – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Detroit Lions win over the Arizona Cardinals, likely Ziggy Ansah’s last game for the Lions, the view on tanking for a draft pick, this season’s unsung heroes, a perspective on the season so far, a look ahead to the Bills, and Case takes us around the division. This episode is buff and moves like Zach Zenner. Try to keep up. Detroit Lions Podcast Enjoys A Win This week we begin by reviewing the Lions big win over the Arizona Cardinals. It wasn’t a fun game to watch. It was a defensive contest that the Lions were able to take away from the Cards on the road. The injured and beleaguered offense continued to underperform, but despite a number of injuries (including to Da’Shawn Hand and Ezekiel Ansah) the Lions prevailed. We discuss what Ziggy’s injury means and why this was likely his last game for the Lions. Tough way to go out. The we talk about tanking and why it’s not a good idea, unless you want to lose a locker room. We understand where people’s hearts are, but you can’t neuter these cats, they are going to play until the final whistle. Unless you listen to the Freep. Then you think Coach Patricia lost them in July. Thanks to a great post from /u/Waxxo we talk about some of the team’s unsung heroes of the 2018 season. It isn’t over, and there isn’t a postmortem to be written, but a few guys deserve recognition for their great work. We review their accomplishments and add a few of the Detroit Lions Podcast favorite players to the list. Changes Have Been Happening In The Secondary Shhh, don’t say anything, but the Lions secondary has been evolving. Tracy Walker has been increasing his snap count as Glover Quin’s drop. We noticed Glover showing some signs of age on the field early in the season, and look at that… The team has quietly been making changes and getting the heir apparent up to speed. They’ve been doing it to good effect as well. Moving ahead, we take a look at the slow start to the season, and the ways in which the team has improved throughout the year. There’s another team who has been doing things in a similar fashion for a while. While many people (including us at time) had their toasters ready, maybe we can unplug them in the short term… Lastly, Case takes us for a Detroit Lions Podcast favorite – a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers coaching changes and how they might actually hurt the team. We move to the Minnesota Vikings, their injury situation, and the firing their OC. Then of course there’s the Chicago Bears and their love of sausages. We’ll chat about them as well. Ep: 189 – Quick Takes: Talkin’ ‘Bout My Division – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EThis week on the Detroit Lions Podcast: Quick Takes, Chris and Jeff slide back into Barry White mode and take another look at possible replacement Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase. We also make the cast to trim Cooter early, and talk about the Lions playoff chances as well as where we want them to land in the division. No real college action this weekend, so we take a week off from the draft talk. After that smooth jazz inspired intro we get right into it with a discussion about the case to trim Cooter prior to the end of the season. What does it mean, and what could it hurt? We also discuss how it’s worked for Cleveland. Detroit Lions Podcast Moves A Coordinator Up The List After last week’s discussion about Offensive Coordinators, Jeff Risdon has made some changes to his evaluation of Adam Gase. He makes the case for why Gas should be moving up the charts of possible replacements for Jim Bob Cooter. There are some good takes in here that you don’t want to miss. Then we look ahead to the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals game. This is one that the Lions should walk away with pretty easily, if Matthew Stafford can play. Look for heads to roll if they don’t and Jim Bob Cooter is likely at the top of the list of those in jeopardy. After that we take a broader look at the division and the Lions playoff chances. When you look at the remaining schedules, it’s still a real possibility that they make it, but they definitely have to play their best football against Minnesota. We also discuss whether we want the Lions to finish ahead of the pack in the division or not… Chris and The Riz, together again on the Detroit Lions Podcast… It’s a weekly thing now… Let us know what you think about the show by commenting in the podcast thread in the subreddit, or by leaving us a voice mail message via Skype at: Detroit Lions Podcast Your input will help make the show better, and if you leave us a message on Skype, you just might be featured in an upcoming Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 188 – Lions Look To The Arizona Cardinals – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions loss to the Los Angeles Rams, talk about what’s to be gained from giving Jim Bob Cooter his walking papers, and discuss Golden Tate, Kenny Golladay, and Zach Zenner. We also take a look ahead to the Arizona Cardinals. This week we begin by taking a call for a favorite segment, “Puttin’ ’em on Blast”, and get a good critique of Jim Bob Cooter and his ability. It sparks a great conversation about what we could gain/lose from making a move at offensive coordinator at this point in the season. Chris is finally convinced that he’s ready to move on from Jim Bob at this point and talks about how we might even get better while also assessing a potential candidate to replace Cooter. Detroit Lions Podcast Game Review From there we take a look back at the game against the Los Angeles Rams. There were some high points, and some really great things to take away from that game, but it was also another opportunity squandered. Once again our Lions were able to create hope where we had none and dashed those hopes before we could realize greatness. For many, the Lions showed how to beat the Rams offense from the defensive side of the ball, but one of the keys to that is to have an offense. We missed on that one. From there we discuss the Golden Tate trade with new perspective. Could it be the lack of remaining home games and the team’s lack of belief in JBC that led to the trade? Picking up a good draft spot while knowing the effect on the team from the fans’ perspective would be small? A fresh conspiracy to chew on at this point in the Lions season. We also discuss the effect of Tate’s departure and Marvin Jones injury on the production of Kenny Golladay. The effect is real and at the same time, some good experience being built at the same time. Lastly, we discuss the misuse of Zach Zenner in the Lions offense. The standard, “he’s doing well, better stop using him” problem from JBC. Detroit Lions Wildcard Chances We take a look at what it would take for the Lions to seal the deal for a Wildcard playoff position. Its not impossible, yet there is still work to be done. The biggest game is the next one, but in the scheme of things the Vikings at home could be the pivot point for their opportunity to make the dance. Moving ahead, we take a look at the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals and discuss where the team’s opportunities might lie. Lastly, Case takes us for a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers and their coaching changes, the Minnesota Vikings and their future financial issues, and The Chicago Bears and their love of sausages. Ep: 187 – Detroit Lions & Los Angeles Rams Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Mike the Ambling Bastard conduct a therapy session for Lions fans. This after the Detroit Lions lost to the Los Angeles Rams today. This is a different kind of loss. We all expected a loss to the Rams, but the Lions created hope where there shouldn’t have been any. That helped ensure the loss hurt even more. The boys take your calls and discuss the game and what’s next. The first half of this one went off pretty much as expected, though the defense stepped up and kept the Lions in the game. In the end the defense was the shining star of this game. Quandre Diggs was again a spark plug for the defense, and stood out as a player who never gives up. The Detroit Lions and Matt Patricia put on a clinic on how to stop the Los Angeles Rams – one which will be analyzed by the Rams opponents for the remainder of the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Is Done With Cooter On the other hand, Jim Bob Cooter’s offense put on a clinic showing how to beat the Detroit Lions. If you like runs up the middle on first down, you’ll love this game. It wasn’t until a the third quarter when the Lions threw a touchdown pass to Taylor Decker that the Lions finally started switching things up. When the did, they found great success. As soon as they found success, they went back to Jim Bob’s predictable conservative ways and the offense again stalled. There is an obvious gap between Coach Patricia and Coach Cooter. This will unwind itself in the offseason as Jim Bob won’t likely remain a part of the Lions staff more than 3 days after the end of the season. Things are bad enough that we just might see him gone ahead of that. So we take your calls and conduct an intensive post-game therapy session to help you cope with the upcoming work week and purge the bitter taste that comes from a loss like this. Definitely a needed prescription. A hearty thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the live post game version of the Detroit Lions Podcast! Comments Or Concerns? Ep: 185 – Lions Look To The Los Angeles Rams – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions loss to the Bears, talk about where we get things wrong, and discuss the heartbreak that comes with dashed expectations. We also take a look ahead to the Rams. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Turkey This week we begin by talking about the turkey that the Lions left on the field against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving morning. Chris discusses the offense and which areas Jim Bob Cooter and Matt Patricia run – you’ve not heard this anywhere else. They also discuss Matthew Stafford’s role. There is a lot to look at here and it looks like we have more than enough information to make some serious decisions about Detroit Lions personnel. Decisions that include both players and the coaching staff. It’s about not throwing the baby out with the bath water at this point and surgically removing the pieces that cost us the most. Case takes an introspective look at what being wrong is like. Chris rallies around the moment and celebrates Case having to eat some crow since he loves to celebrate his “I told you so’s” so much. The reality is, no one gets everything right, and some people deserve to know when they are wrong a heck of a lot more than others. Just ask the person who writes the show notes… lol We hit some key program notes and wind up with a big ask. We are looking for someone with a Detroit Lions party bus. We’re shooting a video (more info in the show) and need this bus to be a part of it. The bus’s owner can do the driving, we just need it as a prop for the video. Get in touch with us via Twitter or via the contact form on the website if you can help out – we’ve got something great in mind… Time To Take It Deep Next, the Detroit Lions Podcast tackles a difficult topic surrounding the team this year – unmet expectations. We discuss how we got our expectations so high, ask what we missed, and topic walk across various areas in which the team has met expectations. We ask whether expectations were realistic, whether we were lied to, and what warning signs were missed. This is a pretty meaty topic and we have a pretty robust discussion. There’s likely more to be covered here in the future, but for now, we feel it gets a solid treatment in the current context of the Lions situation. Moving ahead, we take a look at the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams and discuss where the team’s opportunities might lie. Ep: 184 – Lions Look To The Bears Again – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at a surging Lions team that just beat the Carolina Panthers. Trying to predict this team is a fool’s errand this year. We also take a look at WRs, the defensive front seven, Sam Martin’s recent successes, and a whole lot more. We start the show with a call from one of our listeners again, good stuff from Roche down in Arizona. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and let it flow, it’s the best way to clear your mind and the air. Detroit Lions Podcast – Panthers Review From there we do a quick review of the Panthers game and look at a number of specifics related to the Lions play on both sides of the ball and what their win means for the team going forward. Of course the goal posts showed up again and are really vying for Defensive Player of the Year honors. The front seven played much better than their talent levels would suggest, and we talk about where that’s coming from and why it might have played out the way it did. We also talk about how things change over time and some of the significant changes that this team has experienced so far this year. The Detroit Lions Podcast also talks about who filled in for Golden Tate, how that might happen in the future, and what else we expect to see from the offense this year. We also discuss Sam Martin’s performance, and a whole lot more. Lastly we discuss the upcoming game against Chicago and what it’s going to take for the Lions to pull it out. Ep: 183 – Lions Look To The Carolina Panthers – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff “The Riz” Risdon for a raucous breakdown of the past week in Detroit Lions news. We manage to find a way to have some fun with the current situation while taking a deeper look at what ails the team and what it might take to fix things. We start the week out discussing the loss to the Bears, and basically what happened in that game. It was heartbreaking and we all expected more from the Lions this week. We also wonder what happened to the team that we saw beat the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers this year. The team is a bit bi-polar and we try to figure out why. We also give credit to some high character players the team has picked up in Damon “Snacks” Harrison and Devon Kennard. Great twitter follows that will help you feel a heck of a lot better about your team. Detroit Lions Podcast Weighs In On Coaching From there we dive into the Matt Patricia topic. It’s been a hot one as of late, and we talk about it from a number of different angles. Chris even manages to convince The Riz that we saw Jim Caldwell’s ceiling and that moving on was the right thing to do. From there the conversation hits a number of points and arguments for where we are and where we should go from here. Once we’re done with that one, we move on to another smoking hot subject these days… Matthew Stafford and whether he should remain a Detroit Lion. We here on the Detroit Lions Podcast stand behind Stafford, but this isn’t just a rhetorical conversation. We bring facts, data, and our patented snark to the discussion. There are a number of points to address here, and we try to cover all of them. After those conversations we take a look forward and determine how we might improve this year with what we have. Chris walks down the list and Riz reacts to a number of opportunities for the team to improve. The discuss the ins and outs of each approach and determine where things should go from here. From there the boys of the Detroit Lions Podcast go into the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers. We try to help predict what you might see and what to expect. Also, the Riz takes us “Around The Division” for a look at what else is happening in the NFC North. Ep: 182 – Detroit Lions & Chicago Bears Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by our old friend, PunkRawkinTrev to conduct a live postgame therapy session for Lions fans after the Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears today. This is one of those games that seemed to have really sucked the hope out of fans. The consensus is that this pretty much signals the end of any playoff hopes for this team in 2018. There are questions about the team from top to bottom. The boys take your calls and discuss what it means and what could happen next. This was one of those games that seems to happen every year. It’s the game that really signals that the team won’t find the success that fans so desperately crave. It’s been much harder for fans to deal with in 2018. Expectations were high. Our GM told us that a 9-7 record was unacceptable. We have a new coach who was bringing discipline and a work ethic to the team that is hadn’t had. Conditioning, drafting, scouting, everything was being changed and it was the Lions year to make a splash. Detroit Lions Podcast Resets Expectations None of that matters. Fans feel as though they were lied to. Expectations were set high and then dashed quickly. People don’t know who this team is, nor how to define success anymore. They want a winner, and all they see is massive failure, again. This game was the gut punch that fans who had been around awhile expected. The one they expect every year. So far, they are rewarded with that gut punch with more reliability than you’ll get out of any Ford vehicle. Matthew Stafford looked lost. The secondary looked lost. Everyone who had a coach looked lost. Interestingly, special teams performed well after they fired (and didn’t replace) the coach. Injuries bit the team in key locations. Marvin Jones was hurt. So was Kerryon Johnson. Kenny Golladay was dinged up. Darius Slay couldn’t play, and Sam Martin left the building in an ambulance for god’s sake. The entire day was a parade of headlines touting bad news and failures. This was a horrible game for the Lions, with massive implications for the season and the organization going forward. Ep: 181 – Lions Look To The Chicago Bears – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case get together to talk about the Lions loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the new Friday show with the Riz, Jim Bob Cooter, Teez Tabor, Golden Tate, Matthew Stafford, the media and a whole lot more. This week, we set “Put ’em on Blast” aside and go right into the loss to the Minnesota Vikings. This one really took the wind out of the sails of a lot of Detroit Lions fans, but we’re here to help put things into perspective without pouring Kool-Aid that is too sweet. Chris does something he tends not to do and has an “I told you so” moment when he discusses Teez Tabor’s game. The boys break down that breakdown and also talk about Matthew Stafford and what the hell happened there. Can’t talk about that without bringing up Kelly Stafford’s Instagram interactions. On this topic, Chris finds a little nugget that no one else is talking about… Detroit Lions Podcast Welcomes Zach Zenner Back A Detroit Lions Podcast favorite, Zach Zenner, is back! We discuss his role now that Ameer Abdullah is gone. We also chat about the signing of Bruce Ellington and what he brings to the team. From there we go into the Detroit Lions firing of special teams coach Joe Marciano. We breakdown why it happened and what it means for the Lions in a broader sense. It feels like it’s time again to address the terrible state of the sports media in the city of Detroit. Chris and Case call it like they see it and take many of the members of the media to task. Of course, we also talk about one beat writer who does an excellent job. From there the boys of the Detroit Lions Podcast go into the upcoming game against Chicago. We try to help predict what you might see and what to expect. This is a critical game for our Lions, no doubt. Ep: 180 – Detroit Lions & Minnesota Vikings Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Sandman and Mike the Ambling Bastard to conduct a live postgame therapy session for Lions fans after the Detroit Lions lost to the Minnesota Vikings today. It was a tough game that has a number of implications. Also, the boys discuss what it means and take your calls. This was a game that the Lions needed to win. Their division record is going to be pivotal in their run to make the playoffs this year. This loss makes their path to the playoffs very narrow, and Chris, Sandman, and Mike discuss what that path might look like. Rest assured, it includes winning out against their divisional opponents for the rest of the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Discusses Lions Offensive Struggles We also spend some time discussing Jim Bob Cooter and his future with the team. His time here has not been marked by massive success and we describe what keeping him and canning him might look like. There are a number of issues involved with replacing an offensive coordinator, and we highlight the most important ones. Also, we take your calls and conduct our standard post-game therapy session to help you cope with the upcoming work week and bitter taste that comes from a loss like this. Definitely a needed prescription. A hearty thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the live post game version of the Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 179 – Quick Takes: Off to Minnesota – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EThis week we start a new show on the Detroit Lions Podcast that we plan on bringing to you every Friday. Jeff Risdon and Chris will be reviewing the big stories of the week and previewing the upcoming game. This week we talk about the Golden Tate trade and what it means to the Lions. We discuss how they may adjust and which players are going to need to step up. There’s a lot of angles to this, and Jeff doesn’t leave you wanting – he never does. The Detroit Lions Podcast With A Full Court Press The room formerly known as the “Dungeon of Doom” makes news again. This time Matt Patricia has to correct one of the beat writers’ posture. Very disrespectful. Actually, we discuss the situation and break things out much further than that individual story. From there we discuss the news about A’Shawn Robinson and his tirade in the locker room today. The info came from one of our favorite writers, Justin Rogers, and we think about some of the implications. Lastly, we take a look ahead to the game against the Vikings and tell you what to look for and how the Lions could win, and what might cause them to lose. This is a great opening episode if I say so myself (I do). Ep: 178 – Lions Look To The Vikings – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case get together to talk about the Lions loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a new show that’s kicking off, Kerryon Johnson, Jim Bob Cooter, and of course, Golden Tate. This week, we start with some good “Put ’em on Blast” calls from a few of our listeners. Good content and a few hot takes in there that we discuss during the show. From there we go back and look at what we saw in the game against Seattle. Case doesn’t think the team played as bad as many do, while Chris tries to help people understand that the fact that the other teams in the division doing so poorly this week means the Lions squandered a real opportunity. It was a week in which we didn’t capitalize in a division that no one seems to be able to own as their own. The Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Golden Tate The boys then break into the Golden Tate trade situation. There are a lot of opinions here and there are a number of ways to analyze it. Chris decides that it comes down to a situation where you can fall on either side of the conversation depending on if you are thinking with your heart or your logical mind. Case makes a number of great points (as he is known to do), in the end the team moves onward and hopefully forward. From there the Detroit Lions Podcast goes into Jim Bob Cooter – we take a look at his performance, what it means for his future with the team, and we give him a grade. No need to hide behind rhetoric – we etch our opinions in stone and discuss Jim bob’s future with the team. We also spend some time talking about Kerryon Johnson and one of his key strengths over the Lions committee of backs, including LeGarrette Blount. From there we go “Around The Division” and let you know what’s happening in the NFC North and what it means to the Lions. Ep: 176 – Detroit Lions & Miami Dolphins Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Sandman and Punk Rockin’ Trev to conduct a live postgame celebratory session for Lions fans after our boys beat the Miami Dolphins today. It was a great game with a bunch of takeaways to talk about. Detroit Lions Podcast Breaks It Down After 6 weeks of football, the Lions have recovered from their abysmal start and have come around to be right in the thick of the race for the lead of the NFC North. There’s still a lot of football to be played, but the Detroit Lions trajectory is definitely heading upward, their divisional record, and their record against common opponents is very strong. This team is quietly setting themselves up for a late season run at the divisional title and who knows what else beyond that. The team played extremely well in all phases of the game. They were able to overcome a few shoddy calls that may have derailed them historically and show the world that they “have the right stuff” to beat good football teams. Matthew Stafford, Kerryon Johnson, Jim Bob Cooter, and Matt Patricia are all trending in the right direction for this team according to the Detroit Lions Podcast. In the end, the scoreboard would tell you the game was closer than it really was, but there were another 8 points that very easily should have been up there had the zebras been a little more consistent in their calls. Nevertheless a win over the Miami Dolphins (who took out the Chicago Bears last week) is a good strong win in the Lions record book. A hearty thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the live post game version of the Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 175 – Lions Look To The Dolphins – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EThe Detroit Lions Podcast Returns In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case close out the Lions bye week and look ahead to the game against the Miami Dolphins. This week, we give “Put ’em on Blast” a bye week, but open up with a hilarious opening line for a new segment called, “This Week In Unnecessary Censorship”. Derived from the Jimmy Kimmel bit, our first foray into the realm is an instant classic. From there we share our frustration with the appropriation of organic culture by rent seekers who tend to ruin everything. Yes, the Turkey Hole makes another appearance. With the bye week shenanigans out of the way the Detroit Lions Podcast breaks into more direct Lions news. We discuss the offensive line and the great job they are doing and follow that up with a discussion about Jamal Agnew’s injury and who we would like to see stand in his place (Hint: Ameer Abdullah and Brandon Powell make an appearance). From there we do an in-depth “Around The Division” segment in which we analyze the Packers situation and how they found official help yet again. Also, things aren’t looking great for Aaron Rodgers. Chris and Case disagree on the Vikings trajectory. The Detroit Lions Podcast crew end with a “we’ll see” stalemate. We also use the Chicago Bears’ debacle in Miami to discuss what to look for when the Lions visit. The Bears seem like the biggest load of fool’s gold yet… Let us know what you think about the show by commenting in the podcast thread in the subreddit, or by leaving us a voice mail message via Skype at: Detroit Lions Podcast Your input will help make the show better, and if you leave us a message on Skype, you just might be featured in an upcoming Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 174 – Lions Rockin’ Into The Bye week – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case are joined by Jeff (The Riz) Risdon to break down this week in Detroit Lions news. Coming off a big win over the Green Bay Packers and heading into the Bye week at just the right time shows that things are finally starting to align in the Lions’ favor. We start the show with more listener calls, not nearly as much heat as in the past, but good stuff from our listeners nonetheless. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and vent, it’s the only way to clear the air. The Lions Beat The Green Bay Packers From there we go into game review mode. Any time the Detroit Lions prevail over the Green Bay Packers (FTP) is a great time and this one was no different. We talk about whether this was a Lions win, a Packers loss, a little of both, and whether or not that conversation really even matters. No matter your thoughts on this, it was a great win. From there we talk about the Lions sack numbers and the pressure generated by the front seven. Do coverage sacks count as sacks? Should they? How should we think about this Detroit Lions Defense? The Detroit Lions Podcast will talk about all that and peer into the Lions’ future to see how things are lining up for Free Agency and the Draft and how that might help this team. Make sure to take the names of those who say that Bob Quinn can’t draft – it will be fun to rub their noses in it in the future. Kenny Golladay. Does he need a nickname? Why are people trying so hard to put a label on him? These things need to happen organically. Case just about loses his shit when we work through some of the nickname suggestions that have popped up recently. In the end, Chris likes to think he’s got the best names so far. Make sure to listen closely to the show – the names “Smash” or “Punch” are likely the best that have popped up so far. Its related to Haha Clinton-Dix comments about Golladay after last week’s game. We also discuss Ziggy’s injury situation, and Case takes us ‘Around The Division’. Dean Blandino Joins The Detroit Lions Podcast After all that, longtime friend of the Detroit Lions Podcast, Dean Blandino joins the boys for a heck of a chat. We cover a lot of really good content about the rules, calls that have been made, bad calls that have affected the Lions, and fan the flames of a new Twitter beef between Dean and former NFL official and Rules Analyst for NBC, Terry McAulay. We expect a total blood feud here. Fox vs. NBC – Game On! Ep: 173 – Lions Look To The Packers – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff “The Riz” Risdon for a look at the 1-3 Lions, their performance against the Dallas Cowboys, a breakdown of the game, and a look ahead at their next match-up against the Green Bay Packers. We start the Detroit Lions Podcast with calls from our listeners again, this time they put the team and the officials “On Blast”. There isn’t a whole lot to argue with in here, Lions fans again have some difficult pills to swallow. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and vent, it’s the only way to clear the air. The Detroit Lions Podcast Looks Back From there we go into game review mode. We dissect the Lions and Cowboys game and discuss what went wrong, and why. While it was a loss, we played the Cowboys to within two points on their home field. It was a game we could (and should) have won, but let slip through our hands. We also talk about the development of a few players. Specifically, Kenny Golladay and Jarrad Davis. There’s a lot to feel good about here. While Davis has some issues, he’s shown a great deal of growth just since training camp, much less year over year. We predict where his ceiling might be before we get giddy about Kenny Golladay. The Riz laments our lack of usage of Kenny in the red zone – and yet again, he’s right. After that, the Detroit Lions Podcast looks ahead to the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers. We discuss the Lions current injury situation and what it will take for the Lions to beat the Pack. Ep: 172 – Lions & Cowboys Postgame Show – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Mike ‘The Ambling Bastard’ to conduct a live postgame therapy session for Lions fans frustrated by the loss that the Detroit Lions suffered at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys today. Coming off of their big win against the Patriots, hopes were high for a big win this week. Unfortunately the Cowboys, Lions, and the officials did their best to ensure the even Matthew Stafford and his late-game heroics wouldn’t be enough. Detroit Lions Podcast Postgame Breakdown Highlights of the game include Matthew Stafford’s play, Golden Tate, and Kenny Golladay. Low point were the performances by Jamal Agnew, and the Lions run defense. I’ll have to add that there was some highly questionable officiating on the field today – something Lions fans have become all too accustomed to. In the end, it was a close game that had the Lions in the lead until a last second kick put the Cowboys over the Lions by two points. Heartbreaking, yet still a winnable game. A hearty thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for the live post game version of the Detroit Lions Podcast! Ep: 171 – Lions Look To The Cowboys – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case break down this week in Detroit Lions news. Game three saw a shocking turn around for the franchise and turned the pessimism surrounding the team on its head. We discuss the whether or not this was a fluke or a sign of things to come. Jeff Risdon of course joins us for his insight as well. We start the Detroit Lions Podcast with more listener calls, this time in response to the Pats game. “Put ’em on Blast” had a record number of call ins, which we hope continues. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and vent, it’s the only way to clear the air. The Detroit Lions Podcast Breaks Down The New England Patriots From there we go into game review mode. Looking at how the win against the New England Patriots exceeded expectations. It wasn’t perfect, but it was damned near close, and we break down everything that went right for the team. Credit goes out to guys like Theo Riddick, who has not always gotten the benefit of the doubt from us, and Kerryon Johnson. Big credit to Darius Slay, Quandre Diggs, and the rest of the secondary, who truly were the stars of the game as well. More praise is also due to Matt Patricia for a well called and well-played game. A specific emphasis is put on the rest of the season and expectations for the team. We look at continued injury issues for upcoming opponents, both in the NFC North and league-wide. On that topic, the Dallas Cowboys poor performance against the Seattle Seahawks is discussed. We also consider the effect of the loss of starting LB Lee as the team goes on the road to Dallas next week. After all that, it’s time for Riz’s wisdom with Jeff Risdon on the Detroit Lions Podcast. He talks Lions offensive line, the reputation of the team around the league, and what the game against Dallas holds. Ep: 170 – Lions Look To The Patriots – The Detroit Lions Podcast
EIn this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case break down this week in Detroit Lions news. Game two was much improved over game one, but definitely not without its mistakes. The Lions went down early in the second half and some late game heroics got them within striking distance, but they couldn’t close the deal. In this episode, discuss the Lions players, coaches, and fans. Of course, in our newest segment, we let our listeners put the team on blast. Jeff Risdon – The Riz – also joins for further analysis. We start the show with more listener calls, this time in response to the 49ers game. “Put ’em on Blast” is now Chris’s favorite segment. These calls give voice to Lions fans, and we will continue to allow our listeners to put *anyone* on blast every week. You call (929) 33-Lions, we’ll put it on the air. Go ahead and vent, it’s the only way to clear the air. From there we go into game review mode. Looking back at the loss to the San Francisco 49ers wasn’t nearly as painful as reviewing the Jets game. There are a number of things that need work, but overall it was a much better outing. From there we discuss a number of individual player efforts and talk about where things are working and where they aren’t. Detroit Lions Podcast Spark Plug Award Winner We have to highlight LeGarrette Blount and his big show of heart this week. His big push on Elijah Lee after a perceived late hit on Matthew Stafford wound up in his ejection. Normally something like that would be perceived as undisciplined, but it provided a spark for the team who scored 14 points to none after that incident. After the game, Kelly Stafford came out supporting LeGarrette for standing up for Matthew. Standing up for a quarterback like that is a heck of a way to rally a team, and LeGarrette might have just created a turning point for the Detroit Lions. We talk salary cap (special thanks to Scott Warheit for his cap analysis) and what next year might look like for the Lions. A completely different situation than we are used to. Of course it comes with its own special set of problems. Those are good problems to have. We also discuss the injury situation, preview the game against the Patriots, and Case takes us ‘Around The Division’ in Detroit Lions Podcast tradition. Lastly, click on Case’s Lions sweater and check out this amazing line! The Riz Returns After all that, it’s time for Riz’s wisdom with Jeff Risdon. We discuss the improvements we’ve seen from week one to week two, Matthew Stafford and his problems, and what Josh Gordon means to the Patriots. We also try to figure out whether we are going to see Count Chocula or Count Dracula. That part alone is worth the listen.
