Now’s the time! The Detroit Lions can exert their dominance over one of the top teams in the NFC in this week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals at Ford Field. A fully healthy Lions team have been notching victories week by week in their march to the world championship, and Arizona looks to be just another casualty on the Lions way to NFL dominance. Detroit Lions Podcast Jolts Upright In A Cold Sweat Oh if that were more than just a dream. Instead the Lions are mired in the last quarter of the 2021 NFL season, decimated by injuries and dead cap to the tune of $113 million. Basically 2/3 of their cap is tied up in people who aren’t on the field for the team. Obviously its difficult to compete with the best in the NFL at 2/3 the cost of talent, but the Lions haven’t really been as bad as one would think – they have a slim shot against the Cardinals. Never count this team out, they have a ton of heart and put it all on the line for Coach Dan Campbell. As the team continues to build, grow, and establish their culture – this first season under coach Campbell and GM Brad Holmes has set the tone for good things to come. In the meantime, enjoy the football, find the bright spots, and grab yourself a cocktail. We only have a few week weeks of football left before we head to the long off-season of hopes, dreams and speculation. Coming out of the Lions loss to the Broncos, which was to be expected given the nature of their health and injury status, the Lions look to lick their wounds and face their toughest opponent yet – the Arizona Cardinals. I’m not sure anyone is predicting victory for the Lions here… Detroit Lions Podcast Keeps It Real One interesting point, the Lions played well against the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season, and the Rams just beat the Cardinals. So by the transitive property, the Lions would have a chance. Looking at how this year has gone, we’d say the Lions would play well and lose. Looking at the injury list, the Lions likely don’t have a chance. That being the case, any time is a good time to grab a big pretzel if you’re at Ford Field for the game. We’ll talk about the Denver game some positives and negatives, expectations for the final weeks, Covid and how it’s reared its ugly head around the league, as well as some interesting thinking around drafting quarterbacks. Most people aren’t talking about this, but it is likely one of the biggest factors for rookie QB success beyond just the numbers. Coming off of their first win of the 2021 NFL season the Detroit Lions face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. After last week’s victory, Lions fans felt pretty good about the Lions chances against the Broncos, until the week took shape and illness started to break out in Allen Park. Detroit Lions Podcast Feels Fine It started on Tuesday when Dan Campbell told Detroit Lions fans that Jared Goff had missed practice due to a flu-like illness that “wasn’t Covid-19”. As the week wore on much of the defense and members of the offense fell ill with the flu-like illness, so much so that the team upped their protocols as if it was a Covid-19 outbreak. Then, we find that at least 6 players are on the reserve/COVID-19 list. A number of players have been called up from the practice squad in an attempt to bolster the newfound roster holes. This is terrible news for a team that has already been devastat4ed by injury in the 2021 NFL season. How will the team fare? It finally happened, our beloved Detroit Lions put together their first win of the 2021 NFL Season against the Minnesota Vikings. Now they’re heading out to Denver in hopes of repeating the feat against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. Detroit Lions Podcast Game Preview Denver is a streaky team that has a good deal of talent at every position other than quarterback. It finally happened, our beloved Detroit Lions put together a great effort and pulled out a last minute drive down the field capped with a game-winning touchdown from Jared Goff to Amon Ra St. Brown. This week Chris and Jeff Risdon are joined by Sandman to discuss the Detroit Lions first win of the 2021 NFL season. So here we are, 12 weeks into the 2021 NFL season, and the Detroit Lions have yet to notch a win. They’ve been close against teams that they shouldn’t even have been in games with. They’ve let games slip away against teams they should have beaten. In the last three games, no team has scored more than 16 points on them, and they’ve been outscored by only 5 points total. The Detroit Lions continue to look for that elusive first win of the 2021 NFL season. The first for Dan Campbell as the Lions coach, the first in the NFL for a number of young players, and the first indication that this team is turning things around. The Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears might be just the ticket the Lions need. Detroit Lions Podcast Fires Matt Nagy In a unique move, it appears as though the team has informed Matt Nagy that he will no longer be coaching the Chicago Bears after the Thanksgiving game at Ford Field. While Lions fans were hoping that they could help the Bears hang on to Nagy for another year as their head coach, it’s gotten to the point that potentially winning against the Lions isn’t enough to help a head coach keep his job in the NFL. There is a lot of motivation for both teams to win this game – for the Lions, finally getting that first win and doing so on the national stage would make this a statement game about a turnaround that is officially underway for the franchise. For the Bears, an opportunity to send off the coach who believed with them and put them on this team together. One thing for sure, Thursday’s game is destined to be one to remember. Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Post Game Show! As we head to the first game after the Detroit Lions didn’t lose in the 2021 NFL season, the Lions are pretty big underdogs against the Cleveland Browns at First Energy Stadium. The weather looks like conditions will be similar to what we saw in last week’s tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers – so expect the unexpected. Detroit Lions Podcast Reacts After what can only be termed a frustrating tie in Pittsburgh, in which Dan Campbell took over play calling duties and directly attacked the strengths of the Steelers (with great success), the list of Lions walking wounded gets longer. Jared Goff will miss, leaving Tim Boyle to start for the Lions. Additionally, Trey Flowers will be out again, as will Jermar Jefferson and Matt Nelson. The Browns are down two cornerbacks and have a lengthy injury report as well. With the weather and injuries, we’re expecting a whole lot of running this week. The Detroit Lions yet again managed to do what no one expected. Chris was laughed at for saying the Lions could beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he was right, they could have. Instead, they avoided losing out the season by landing a tie against the Steelers at Heinz Field. Its a perfect fit for the ongoing story of the Detroit Lions 2021 NFL season. Detroit Lions Podcast Takes Stock While the Lions didn’t win the game, they didn’t lose either, and with quarterback Jared Goff suffering an oblique injury, the Lions are likely to test out their backup quarterbacks and add a whole new level of angst to fans for the season. Its a no win scenario really, Boyle or Blough sizzle? The crucifixion of Jared Goff will be locked in. They stink, and the questions about the direction of the team will be legion. There are seven games left in the season after the game against the Cleveland Browns this week (which we will cover in depth), but we sense that the conversation around Jared Goff is only going to heat up with each passing week. Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Post Game Show! As we head to the halfway point of the Lions season, we react and help break things down after the Detroit Lions take on the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. Detroit Lions Podcast Reacts After an excruciating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles the Detroit Lions went into the bye week without a win, and with many more questions than answers. Cue coach Dan Campbell stepping in to take greater control of the offense, relegating Anthony Lynn to a more junior role. Coach Campbell took a good deal of time grinding film while his staff took a few (much needed) days off over the bye, before heading back in to the office and putting in a week of extremely long days. The Detroit Lions Fell absolutely flat against the Philadelphia Eagles – an unlikely loss that very few expected. The Lions head into the bye week winless with many questions about the team, its consistency, and if they can even win a game this year. Well, that just happened. The Detroit Lions went to SoFi Stadium to play the Los Angeles Rams and played their hearts out in a game that was much closer than the score would reveal. Chris was there and will report on all things SoFi Stadium and the Lions Rams experience. Detroit Lions Podcast Was There The team came close. In a game in which they were 16.5 point underdogs, the Detroit Lions succumbed to the Rams late after Matthew Stafford absolutely abused CB Daryl Worley when he stepped in for an injured AJ Parker. That being said, they beat the heck out of the point spread. Worley’s performance was so bad, that he’s already been cut. Its not unexpected, when you are already working in 4th and 5th string players to cover for injuries, eventually you’re going to hit the talent cliff. That’s what happened with Worley. A valiant effort by the Lions who are still looking for their first win after meeting the LA Rams. That said, their best chance of the season for a win so far comes this week when the Detroit Lions play host to the Philadelphia Eagles. Expectations amongst fans are high for the Lions to return to the same form they showed in Los Angeles which should be enough to clip the Philadelphia Eagles wings. All in all, the loss to the Minnesota Vikings might have been worse for them than it was for the Detroit Lions. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Strength For the Lions, a group of scrappy young guys who many thought lacked NFL caliber talent stood up and played hard until the clock hit ‘0’. When it did, they lost by a field goal set up by one player being out of position on the play before. The team is close and the coaching is strong. There are wins to be had. Additionally, the team has been plagued by injuries. They rack up with Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow going to IR for the remainder of the season after having surgery on his toe. Some rookies (like our favorite UDFA CB Jerry Jacobs) are stepping up and showing what they can do – and we saw a lot. Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson did not have the day that anyone expected against the Lions secondary. So that happened. Again. The officials really put it to the Detroit Lions and their fans in the game against the Baltimore Ravens. In a game where the Lions did enough to win and the Ravens did enough to lose, the officials decided to lean into the game so it would end based on their absolute joke of blown calls. Lions fans again walk away asking themselves if the NFL is rigged in 2021. Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Post Game Show! The Detroit Lions finished their first game of the season with a notch in the loss column, but it was so much more than that. Looking at the standings table doesn’t tell the story either. The entire division lost and the Lions are tied for first after week one. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Potential The game against the San Francisco 49ers left Detroit Lions fans with a lot of hope, even in the face of that loss. The team showed more heart than we’ve seen from them in over three years. Any other Lions team would have given up before the second half even started. This team wouldn’t let the 49ers hang the big L on them and rallied back from a 38-10 deficit to take the outcome of the game down to their last possession. This showed the maturity of a team much older and more experienced. This gave the players and coaches a lot to build on. I would categorize this as one of the most fun losses this team has ever had. Conversely, probably the biggest blow to the Lions hopes this season was the loss of Jeff Okudah to a ruptured Achilles in the opening game against the San Francisco 49ers. The second year player was the clear number one cornerback for the Lions and the team has its second week against two of the best in the league in the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams. Okudah will be impossible to replace, even with a ‘next man up’ mentality, but this definitely lines up with the Detroit Lions youth movement and their efforts to build, grow, and evaluate talent for next year and going forward. We will also cover, Josh Gordon rumors, Penei Sewell’s performance and potential future at left tackle, as well as Jared Goff’s performance and what we can expect from him and the team going forward. Final cuts have been made and the Detroit Lions have made their way down to their final 53-man roster. There will still be some churn as a result of other teams cutting players that can help the Lions, but the biggest work on the roster has been done thus far. Chris and Jeff will talk about, where the team currently stands, and then will be joined by Detroit Lions undrafted free agent (and new member of the 53-man roster) cornerback, Jerry Jacobs. Two down one to go and then the countdown to the regular season begins. Is the team as bad as the first half against the Pittsburgh Steelers would make one think? Could they surprise and vie for the division? We’ll answer these questions an a whole lot more in this week’s show. Detroit Lions Podcast Preseason Game Review First things first, we’ll set the tone with a review of the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers preseason game. The first half was a real depressing display. followed by a second half comeback that would have made Matthew Stafford proud. The boys weren’t able to come away with a win, but boy did we learn a lot about this team. We’ll go into it and why not to read too much into what we saw early. From there will look to the Colts game, what the strategy from Coach Dan Campbell will be and why the Indianapolis Colts are actually playing along. From an entertainment standpoint, the game will definitely be better, particularly for those evaluating players who are riding the roster bubble and getting reps while learning the NFL game. We’ll do injuries, roster bubble, which of the 53 roster spots currently aren’t on the team, a look at ex-Lions around the league, and finally, we’ll take a look at Matthew Stafford’s big piece. The Detroit Lions preseason game one is over and we are about to head into game two. What better time to check in with one of our favorite new Detroit Lions players, undrafted free agent cornerback, Jerry Jacobs? Detroit Lions Cornerback Jerry Jacobs New Position We’re going to discuss Jacobs performance in his NFL preseason debut, a little bit of what happened behind the scenes, and what we can expect this week in game two. Jerry will join us after the preseason ends so we can continue to follow his journey and keep cheering on one of the best stories in the NFL. We’ll also talk about the Detroit Lions cut of Don Muhlbach from the roster after 17 years and his time as a player with now head coach Dan Campbell. Its almost time for live fire exercises for this team and its coaching staff. Spring heats up in Allen Park as the Lions kick off the second of three Organized Team Activity sessions with the team installing their playbooks, beginning player evaluations, and trying to find a wide receiver that could qualify as their number one. Bad news, that likely won’t happen this year. The good news is that the team is setting itself up for a huge step forward in 2022. This year will be about finding that bit of sugar to make the medicine go down. The heat of the spring has started in the NFL with the end of the draft and the wrap-up of the Detroit Lions 2021 Rookie Mini-camp, we can finally talk about what we may have added to the team this year. The NFL released their schedule yesterday and the Detroit Lions now have clarity in their schedule as to what they will face this year and when. We’ll go through each game and discuss how things look from our perspective at this point, and what we would expect to see from the team this year in our “too early” game predictions as we walk through the 2021 Detroit Lions schedule. On the heels of the 2021 NFL Draft, we pause for a moment to take stock of the Detroit Lions performance and how the front office performed in its first draft as a team with Brad Holmes at the helm. Taking Penei Sewell in the first round was a consensus perfect pick for this team. There were questions as NFL Draft day two unfolded, but Draft Day three helped illuminate Holmes’ strategy for the Lions. In the end, Holmes’ draft strategy was entirely unexpected, but incredibly solid.
