Ep: 355 – Lions Show Big Heart – Detroit Lions Podcast

Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast Post Game Show! The Detroit Lions finished their first game of the season with a notch in the loss column, but it was so much more than that. Looking at the standings table doesn’t tell the story either. The entire division lost and the Lions are tied for first after week one. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Potential The game against the San Francisco 49ers left Detroit Lions fans with a lot of hope, even in the face of that loss. The team showed more heart than we’ve seen from them in over three years. Any other Lions team would have given up before the second half even started. This team wouldn’t let the 49ers hang the big L on them and rallied back from a 38-10 deficit to take the outcome of the game down to their last possession. This showed the maturity of a team much older and more experienced. This gave the players and coaches a lot to build on. I would categorize this as one of the most fun losses this team has ever had. Conversely, probably the biggest blow to the Lions hopes this season was the loss of Jeff Okudah to a ruptured Achilles in the opening game against the San Francisco 49ers. The second year player was the clear number one cornerback for the Lions and the team has its second week against two of the best in the league in the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams. Okudah will be impossible to replace, even with a ‘next man up’ mentality, but this definitely lines up with the Detroit Lions youth movement and their efforts to build, grow, and evaluate talent for next year and going forward. We will also cover, Josh Gordon rumors, Penei Sewell’s performance and potential future at left tackle, as well as Jared Goff’s performance and what we can expect from him and the team going forward. Ep: 352 – Lions Final 53 ft. Jerry Jacobs – Detroit Lions Podcast

Final cuts have been made and the Detroit Lions have made their way down to their final 53-man roster. There will still be some churn as a result of other teams cutting players that can help the Lions, but the biggest work on the roster has been done thus far. Chris and Jeff will talk about, where the team currently stands, and then will be joined by Detroit Lions undrafted free agent (and new member of the 53-man roster) cornerback, Jerry Jacobs. Detroit Lions Podcast Cut Analysis We’ll start by talking about the Lions gaps insofar as backup offensive linemen go, and with them as gaping as they are, why they let Tyrell Crosby go, and what things currently look like. We’ll also discuss the armchair GM freakout about the Lions kicker situation and how they got that solved. We’ll also discuss a number of the older players that are no longer with the team. Once we discuss cuts, we’ll be joined by Lions cornerback, Jerry Jacobs to celebrate the hard work that got him on the Detroit Lions roster. His is an amazing journey, which he chronicled with us just before the start of the preseason. Jerry will continue to join us throughout the year telling his story, and helping fans understand what its like to live the dream of making it in the NFL. As Lions fans, we can only dream of it being a JuCo to Super Bowl story. That one is yet to be written. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 351 – Lions Final Preseason Game Ahead – Detroit Lions Podcast

Two down one to go and then the countdown to the regular season begins. Is the team as bad as the first half against the Pittsburgh Steelers would make one think? Could they surprise and vie for the division? We’ll answer these questions an a whole lot more in this week’s show. Detroit Lions Podcast Preseason Game Review First things first, we’ll set the tone with a review of the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers preseason game. The first half was a real depressing display. followed by a second half comeback that would have made Matthew Stafford proud. The boys weren’t able to come away with a win, but boy did we learn a lot about this team. We’ll go into it and why not to read too much into what we saw early. From there will look to the Colts game, what the strategy from Coach Dan Campbell will be and why the Indianapolis Colts are actually playing along. From an entertainment standpoint, the game will definitely be better, particularly for those evaluating players who are riding the roster bubble and getting reps while learning the NFL game. We’ll do injuries, roster bubble, which of the 53 roster spots currently aren’t on the team, a look at ex-Lions around the league, and finally, we’ll take a look at Matthew Stafford’s big piece. Ep: 350 – Lions Preseason Update – Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions preseason game one is over and we are about to head into game two. What better time to check in with one of our favorite new Detroit Lions players, undrafted free agent cornerback, Jerry Jacobs? Detroit Lions Cornerback Jerry Jacobs New Position We’re going to discuss Jacobs performance in his NFL preseason debut, a little bit of what happened behind the scenes, and what we can expect this week in game two. Jerry will join us after the preseason ends so we can continue to follow his journey and keep cheering on one of the best stories in the NFL. We’ll also talk about the Detroit Lions cut of Don Muhlbach from the roster after 17 years and his time as a player with now head coach Dan Campbell. Campbell refers to himself as an a**hole for doing it on Don’s birthday. The good news is, we can remember Don as always being great rather than having to have seen him falter. We have a few defensive linemen back in the roster including Nick Williams and Levi Onwuzurike, a linebacker who might survive those who have already written his eulogy, and some preseason player strategy that Dan Campbell is thinking about for game 2. All that and a lot more in this week’s episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 346 – Back In The Saddle Again – Detroit Lions Podcast

After a two week break the boys are back at the mics with the latest Detroit Lions and NFL news. It might be mid-summer, but there is a lot to cover in this week’s show. Detroit Lions Podcast Bringing It Back First, we’ll talk about Penei Sewell and just how great he could be for the Lions this year – its what you want from your #1 overall pick, but he could be a rookie pro-bowler and we’ll discuss why. We also discuss the camp battle that is brewing for the #2 outside cornerback position. A lot of folks have Amani Oruwariye penned in at the position, we’ll discuss why that may be premature. You Need To Catch This Also, we’ll go in-depth on the issues the team faces at the wide receiver position as well as some of the larger effects of the decisions made there. Pay attention to this, because it could be the first weakness exposed in the new regimes armor. We’ll cover the great Bubba Baker sack story, the bad Aaron Robinson franchise tag story, and the ugly Richard Sherman story. All that and a ton of important announcements that you *need* to know about. Ep: 340 – Draft Reaction With Dan Shonka – Detroit Lions Podcast

On the heels of the 2021 NFL Draft, we pause for a moment to take stock of the Detroit Lions performance and how the front office performed in its first draft as a team with Brad Holmes at the helm. Taking Penei Sewell in the first round was a consensus perfect pick for this team. There were questions as NFL Draft day two unfolded, but Draft Day three helped illuminate Holmes’ strategy for the Lions. In the end, Holmes’ draft strategy was entirely unexpected, but incredibly solid. Detroit Lions Podcast Joined By Dan Shonka On this episode, we are joined by Dan Shonka, Former NFL scout with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He is currently the GM and a Scout for OurLads.com NFL Scouting, a Shrine Bowl personnel consultant and much more. We anticipate some great analysis here. Its time for a listener favorite, our annual 2021 NFL Consensus Mock Draft! Chris and Jeff Risdon are joined by Erik Schlitt and Scott Bischoff to take you through the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and build our consensus picks for each team. Detroit Lions Podcast Mocks The Entire First Round Where will Justin Fields land? Is Trey Lance a favorite for the Detroit Lions, or will Kyle Pitts drop to them? There’s been a lot of discussion of Mac Jones moving up the board, could the Lions trade back for more value? Chris has been all over Jaylen Waddle, but a lot of folks are high on Devonta Smith. All questions will be answered as we walk you through our 2021 NFL Mock Draft, consensus style. One thing for certain, Trevor Lawrence will be first overall. This off-season has set the Detroit Lions up for what they are calling their retooling of the team under new leadership, from the top down. With Matthew Stafford heading to the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff coming to Detroit, the Lions will have a new identity on offense. After last year’s dumpster fire, they desperately need one on defense. The new management team has been making good moves thus far, but their off-season prowess will be fully judged on their performance in the 2021 NFL Draft. There is a lot at stake, we’ll see if they are up to the task. Big News On YouTube! We’ve launched a new series starring a number of talented personalities you’ve seen on our shows at various times. Ep: 334 – NFL Free Agency Kicks Off – Detroit Lions Podcast

Welcome to the Detroit Lions Podcast! The NFL League year kicked off today. The tampering period began the frenzy of news on Monday, March 15th and there have been a number of interesting developments already across the NFL. The NFL rumors are running wild. We’re here to help clarify. Detroit Lions Podcast Clarifies The Current Situation Free Agency is the beginning of the NFL off-season clarity that fans are looking for, culminating on draft day. Knowing what your 2021 NFL roster looks like is the basis for everything your team will do (unless you are Matt Patricia). The Detroit Lions have limited resources to work with, but have proven themselves to have sharp minds in the front office, particularly in Brad Holmes. Some very solid, and inexpensive, roster moves have been made so far (including picking up Michael Brockers), helping shore up weak areas and set the team up to be as successful as possible in the draft. All that, and there is more to come. Biggest surprise? The rumors that the wide receiver market isn’t what some players thought it would be. Ep: 332 – Alpha Males Are Back – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon get together to bring you the latest Detroit Lions news and opinion – there’s a ton going on this week, so let’s get right into it. Detroit Lions Podcast Are Alpha Males Too! Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell had a pair of press appearances this week in which he discussed the future of the team. He also talked about alpha males and what it means to be one. In the press conference that starred both Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell basically screamed the servant leadership style that Brad Holmes discussed in his post-hire press conference. How folks haven’t really understood what Brad Homes was talking about is crazy to us. While some people are stuck on figuring out whether Brad Holmes or Dan Campbell are the top boss, we’ll share with you what is really going on (hint: its modern leadership). All Kinds Of Press This Week There is also the Dan Campbell interview with Pat McAfee from earlier in the day. Dan talks about a number of fun topics, and shares some information about how he shifted his thinking about entering coaching, and probably earned himself a number of fans across the country. Also the Lions signed a wide receiver and more. We’ll talk everything in breaking Detroit Lions news, on this episode of the Podcast. Check Us Out On YouTube! Ep: 331 – Calm Before the 2021 Storm? – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon get together to bring you the latest Detroit Lions news and opinion. We’ll cover Kenny Golladay and the “Tag and Trade” scenario that so many people are talking about, deliver a quick announcement about Jeff Risdon and his increased involvement with the show, discuss a combo of topics around not being able to buy a locker room (per Chris Spielman), Dan Campbell’s interview, and how the calculus changes on free agency with a new set of coaches at the helm. Detroit Lions Podcast Grades The “Tag and Trade” Scenario Jeff Risdon had a great article on LionsWire that discussed the historical success of NFL teams using the franchise tag on a player with the idea of trading them. Results are mixed, and we start to divine when the situation works and when it doesn’t. The Riz has a good theory on this situation, while Chris looks at some of the other options facing the team – all of this centered around Kenny Golladay. We also make an announcement about the Riz and his expanded role in the podcast. He’s always been a great guest, but our original love, Case, has a number of issues that are just making his schedule untenable. He WILL be back, but on a more “as available” basis while he gets everything rounded back up. For the record, there’s no animosity and he isn’t suffering painfully due to some malady or anything like that, it’s just that real life hits us in the face sometimes and we have to prioritize the most important things first. We all miss him already. What Does “Buy A Locker Room” Mean? We think that the Chris Spielman interview in which he states that you “Can’t buy a locker room” is much more far-reaching than most are thinking. It’s not just about free agency. It’s about culture. It’s also not just about players. The locker room is a product of the front office, the coaches, and the players. Every single one of those items is needed to build a positive culture. When you talk about people who work for others and them leaving, it’s rare that they quit a job. It’s much frequent that they quit a boss. Herein lies a key to the Detroit Lions rebuild strategy – get the boss right first. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 330 – Cheap Options In Free Agency – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Sandman, and Jeff Risdon get together to bring you the latest Detroit Lions news and opinion. We’ll cover Kenny Golladay, Jason LaConfora, and a whole lot of BS, take a look at accuracy rating comparisons between Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford, discuss what a weakling Dan Campbell is, and dive into the best bargain bin options for the Lions in the 2021 NFL Free Agency period. Detroit Lions Podcast Asks If Dan Campbell Is Weak To be certain, the answer is a straight ‘no’, but the real conversation is about authenticity at the coaching position. We had an issue in that area with the last coaching staff, but there is a story about Dan Campbell that pretty clearly shows that his toughness is real. We discuss it and just how amazing what he endured was, much less that he did so quietly. 2021 NFL Free Agency Sets The Tone For The Draft Brad Holmes has taken a team with only 5 picks in the 2021 NFL Draft and a quarterback who wanted out, and turned it into a good NFL quarterback, 6 picks and an extra first rounder in each of the next two years. Great start, and an opportunity to get some much needed capital for this team. Before we start spending that capital, Holmes will have the 2021 NFL Free Agency period to set himself up further ahead of the draft. This team will need a number of players this year, and looking in the bargain areas of the free agency wire will be a key place for him to play to fill those needs. You don’t want to saddle the team with expensive old players right as the team is ready to make a run, so this is the time to find high quality, nicely priced players to help the team build to the next level. We go over some of those players and what key positions they could fill and who Brad Holmes might grab in the 2021 NFL Free Agency period. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 329 – Lions Road To The Draft – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case start our look toward the 2021 NFL Draft. While we recognize that free agency happens between now and the 2021 NFL draft, we have to recognize that once we have made our way through the draft, we will have a great deal more understanding of what to expect from this team. We aren’t skipping free agency, we’re just looking to a key milestone on this journey of enlightenment. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Hall Of Fame We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Calvin Johnson’s first ballot Hall Of Fame vote, so we do. We talk about the path the team and Calvin are currently on toward redemption and how things might have gone so wrong along the way. There are options for taking care of him monetarily as well, so hopefully in the end everyone ends up in a happy place. Breaking Coaching News: Lions Hire Antwaan Randle El Another player turned coach for the Lions – the Lions coaching staff has now played in 1081 games, or 67.5 full seasons. If you want a staff that can command the respect of its players because they’ve “been there”, you’ve hired them. This is an interesting dynamic for the team after the previous regime. Seeing the results are going to be really interesting. There is one thing absolutely certain, this is going to be a fun year to watch football. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 328 – Detailing Jared Goff – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon do a deep dive on Jared Goff, look at whether picking him up was a good move, scout his abilities, and discuss his fit on the Lions. We also make fun of Tedy Bruschi for his terrible take on Matthew Stafford’s toughness, Talk about the new coaching staff and what they mean to the team, and Get into potential free agent Wide Receivers that aren’t in the headlines you’re reading today. Detroit Lions Podcast On Jared Goff The first and most important thing that people need to know is that Matthew Stafford was not going to play for the Detroit Lions in 2021. The team didn’t have a Quarterback, but did have a $19 million dead cap number. That was the table stakes, the reality the new front office and GM Brad Holmes had to deal with. When you look across the landscape of real possibilities, who else would have been a better replacement that Jared Goff? Toss in 2 upcoming first round picks, and a third round pick this year and the decision was a no-brainer. We wind up with a quarterback that has won playoff games, been to a Super Bowl and is just 26 years old leading a team on a trial basis during a rebuild. If he doesn’t work, we have plenty of ammunition to get “our guy” in 2022 or 2023 – the Lions have an amazing set of options. We also talk about Jared Goff as a player and discuss his abilities and flaws and contrast them against Matthew Stafford and his abilities and flaws. It just might be that the Lions and Rams have upgraded for the rosters and schemes they play. There’s More Than Jared Goff In Detroit We have a coaching staff that sees player who were hesitant and obviously had their confidence shaken last season. They played slower than they should have – seemingly afraid. We discuss why that is, what happened, and what qualifies this staff to turn that around. From there we discuss off-the-radar free agency pickups at the wide receiver position that just might interest a team like the Lions. There are some good talents out there for the Lions to grab. Ep: 325 – Senior Bowl Day 1 Film Review – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon break down film from the first day of the 2021 NFL Senior Bowl and discuss options for the Lions at quarterback. Detroit Lions Podcast Senior Bowl Film Analysis Well, the Senior Bowl is dealing with some logistical issues related to the media and player interviews. We remain hopeful that this evening’s interview will go off as planned. The interviews are scheduled between 9pm and midnight ET, so if it’s cleared up we should have them then. We may possibly just record and release the next morning. That being said, we have access to the film from the Senior Bowl practices and wanted to do a walk-through of day one’s practice. We walk you through 25 plays from each team and share a coaching moment with a Miami Dolphins defensive line coach. Today’s show really gives you the vibe for what it’s like to be at the Senior Bowl. While you will hear all of our comments on each player’s film, the YouTube version of this show is really the best experience, as you will get to see exactly what we are talking about during our evaluations. Senior Bowl Coverage Kicks Off! It was recently announced that there will be no NFL Combine this year. Teams will be resorting to “pro days” to evaluate players and talent. This is a real blow to fans as they won’t have the coverage that they usually do in the lead up to the NFL Draft. This also makes the Senior Bowl practices much more important. Just about everyone in the Detroit media is going to be reporting on the information they get from other outlets for their Senior Bowl and player coverage. As always, The Detroit Lions Podcast will be covering the Senior Bowl as credentialed media. We’ll have player interviews, film of players during practice, a number of live shows, and a whole lot more. Ep: 323 – Dan Campbell Presser Reaction – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman react to new Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell’s opening press conference. We bring audio sound bites and discuss some of the nuances of what he’s saying and what it might mean for the Lions Detroit Lions Podcast Pumped Iron Immediately Afterward If the Lions were looking for a “Leader of Men”, they sure found one in Head Coach Dan Campbell. His opening press conference set NFL circles alight. If not viewed in its entirety, Dan Campbell could have looked a bit unhinged, but in its totality Campbell painted a cohesive picture of compatibility, cohesiveness, culture, and conquest. Henceforth referred to as the 4 C’s. Lions fans were ready to suit up and try out for the team as new Head Coach Dan Campbell preached the importance of servant leadership and focusing all levels of the organization on the vision for the team. Head Coach Dan Campbell understands Detroit. He felt the pain of the 0-16 season along with fans as a player on a team that couldn’t deliver to a city hungry for success from its beloved Lions. He wants to turn that around. He has a vision, and in partnership with Brad Holmes and Mike Disner, that vision is becoming a plan and a strategy. The time to move is now. Even as they get their coordinators in place, the Detroit Lions have just a few days to make their way down to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl. Senior Bowl Coverage Is Much More Important With No NFL Combine It was recently announced that there will be no NFL Combine this year. Teams will be resorting to “pro days” to evaluate players and talent. This is a real blow to fans as they won’t have the coverage that they usually do in the lead up to the NFL Draft. Ep: 321 – Brad Holmes Hired As Lions General Manager – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Sandman, and Jeff Risdon take a look at the Detroit Lions new hire at General Manager, Brad Holmes. News broke early this afternoon that the Detroit Lions Hired Brad Holmes as the organization’s new GM – a choice we all believe is a huge step in the right direction for this club’s front office. Detroit Lions Podcast Evaluates The Process We wanted to start the show out by evaluating the process the team followed in landing Brad Holmes as General Manager. Chris laid out what he was looking for from the organization in his vlog last week, and so far the Lions are delivering. The team was methodical, played no favorites, and landed on a top tier candidate in Brad Holmes as their General Manager. The team was measured, patient, and weren’t swayed by cries that other teams would “steal their guy”. They ran their process and got the GM they were after. Brad Holmes Shows Skills While Holmes hasn’t filled the General Manager’s seat previously, he has played a significant role in the ongoing success of the Los Angeles Rams, worked with a number of different coaches, and has helped build a perennial playoff team without having a first round pick in the last four years. He’s known for increasing the value of the Rams draft by trading away higher round picks and nailing his picks in the mid/late rounds – something the Lions are in dire need of currently. Additionally, with Matthew Stafford’s contract coming to an end in two years, being in a position to generate draft value could be an extreme need for the Lions to move on from Stafford if they need to. There is a lot of work to do in Detroit, and Brad Holmes appears to be the right pick at GM for the Lions current situation. Big News On YouTube! Ep: 320 – Lions Hiring Process Heats Up! – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Case, and Jeff Risdon take a look at the Detroit Lions current events in the Head Coach and General Manager hiring process. There has been a lot of news, a lot of rumors, and a lot of speculation. We take you through a walk of the top candidates, what they bring to the table, and predict their chances of landing the job. We start everything off discussing canary traps and one bit of housecleaning that might be happening in Allen Park. Detroit Lions Podcast Helps with General Manager Search In our segment on the General Manager search, we cover Ed Dodds, Brad Holmes, Thomas Dimitroff, Rick Smith, and sprinkle in a little conversation about Rick Schneider to discuss salary negotiation strategy. Ed Dodds is our current front runner of the group, but there’s a lot of love for Brad Holmes as well. Good solid conversation discussing their credentials, why they might fit, and areas of concerns. Likely the most comprehensive bit of information on these guys you’ll find in one place. Detroit Lions Head Coach Candidates Come Next Of course Head coaches are a big piece of the puzzle and Lions fans have a distinct favorite amongst the candidates. We discuss Marvin Lewis, Robert Saleh, Dan Campbell, Arthur Smith, and Matt Campbell. There are a number of ins and outs for each candidate, so we try to break them down and discuss organizational fit, their resume’s, and what we would want from each of them. We also discuss who our betting favorites are at the position, and bring up some considerations you haven’t heard elsewhere regarding the consensus fan favorite. Lastly, we discuss what the process in the front office likely looks like. How are they conducting interviews, and how are they looking to fit these pieces together successfully. Ep: 318 – Minnesota Vikings Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman discuss the last game of the Detroit Lions 2020-21 Football Season against the Minnesota Vikings. Poor officiating, a called back touchdown, a team that looked relatively competent even in a loss, this game just about had it all. At least all of what you’d expect in a Lions game. Minnesota Vikings Brought Their Own Officials Were they the reason the Lions lost? We’re not blaming them, but even fans of the Minnesota Vikings are complaining about the officiating in this game. Some are saying it cost them better draft position. One thing for certain, they made some terrible calls in this game. I can’t imagine how off the rails the fan base would be right now if the officials had called this game against the Minnesota Vikings and cost us a post season bid. One thing for sure, if you are the Lions, always clinch your playoff berth prior to the last game of the season. Detroit Lions Podcast Pushes Into The Off-season As much as we love football, mercifully we’ve entered the off-season. Things will be extremely busy this year with a new GM, and new coach, decisions at quarterback, and a complete defensive rebuild on the menu (at minimum). We start the discussion on these topics and tease some new features that we will begin delivering starting this coming week. The off-season is a tough time to find good content, but we believe that we have a solution for you. Stay tuned for that, we think you’re going to love it. Check Us Out On YouTube! Ep: 317 – Lions v. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Case, Tony Ortiz, and Jeff Risdon take a look at the current state of the Detroit Lions organization (hint: things are a mess) and look ahead to the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This game is in a little bit of flux due to the Lions coaching staff having significant issues with Covid close contact cases, which also affects head coach Darrell Bevell. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be playing the Lions on Saturday as planned as a result. The game could wind up being pushed a day or two – we’ll stay on it and let you know where things end up. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Crush The Lions? We discuss the Lions chances against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it really doesn’t look good. The Bucs have a lot to play for, the Lions, not so much. The Lions have a bunch of all stars, the Lions need a hospital ship to care for all of the injuries. We’re not at a point of predicting whether Tampa will win, but more about how much they will win by. The other side of that coin, at least there isn’t nearly as much pressure on fans worrying about a win… Detroit Lions Podcast Wishes Everyone a Happy Holiday With no post game show after the Bucs game, we wanted to thank everyone for their support of the show this year. We continue to grow as a result of all of your listenership and telling friends about us. EP: 316 – Tennessee Titans Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman take a look at the Lions loss to the Tennessee Titans. Frankly, the best part of the game was the @DetLionsPodcast twitter account. Likely the best way a Lions fan could have fun while watching this game. The Tennessee Titans were held at bay for the most part during the first half, but once the third quarter started Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry had their way with the Lions. Tennessee Titans Carved Up The Lions Defense Big credit to Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans, they played their game and simply overpowered the hapless Lions. It has to be tough to be Corey Undlin with your shot at being a defensive coordinator without an overseer but doing so with a roster so devoid of talent. A much-loved interim coach and defensive coordinator isn’t enough to overcome a roster full of injuries and holes against a team as talented as the Tennessee Titans. Detroit Lions Podcast Ready For The Off-season We discuss the need for an overhaul of the team’s defense as well as the significant holes on offense. The Lions are on track to have none of their receivers reach the 1,000 yard mark for the first time since 2009. Think about that. This isn’t a reflection on Matthew Stafford, but the utter lack of talent and number of injuries to the receiving corps. It’s entirely possible that the Lions might not even have a running back reach 600 yards this year. A rebuild is on the menu, and it has to be done with 5 draft picks and a good bit of cap space. The off-season this year is going to be one of the most interesting in memory. Check Us Out On YouTube! Ep: 315 -Tennessee Titans Game Preview – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and tony Ortiz take a look ahead to the Detroit Lions vs. Tennessee Titans game. We also take a look at what’s happened in the Lions GM search so far this week as well as evaluate the process so far. Tennessee Titans Tough to Stop One of the keys for the Lions against the Tennessee Titans is going to be their ability to score against the Titans defense. The Lions have a big question mark surrounding the health of Matthew Stafford, and he will be needed if the Lions have any hope against the Tennessee Titans. The good news is that the Tennessee titans run a very similar offense to what the Lions have for the last few years, so they have some experience in how to exploit it. That being said, the Titans offense and Derrick Henry is likely to run all over the Lions defense. We have the injury report, Las Vegas line, predictions and more preparing you for this game. Detroit Lions Podcast Talks GM Candidates We spend some time discussing the Lions GM search, and the process around it. The Lions have set themselves up much different than they did last time. In 2020 they are ensuring that they take the organization and its culture into the process, which is something they missed last time by outsourcing the work to the NFL’s suggested search “guru.” This is something that has been undersold for a long time, and the importance of culture, as well as its nuance are important considerations when making outside hires. It’s possible to foster a winning culture while still working within the organization’s mores. We find the approach refreshing and believe it will present much more success than the last go around in this space. Check Us Out On YouTube! Ep: 314 – Lions Look To Tennessee Titans – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions & Packers game, the hiring of Chris Spielman, some insane Lions stats, Matthew Stafford, Kenny Golladay, and look ahead to the Tennessee Titans. It’s a long show packed with a ton of information. Tennessee Titans Trap Many times in the NFL, teams are lulled into a sense of accomplishment in which they look past their next opponent. They believe they are good enough to beat a team that’s down on its luck, and don’t take them seriously. The Tennessee Titans are poised for just such an opportunity in their game against the Lions. A home game for the Tennessee Titans makes this the perfect setup. Mike Vrabel is a smart coach, and I don’t expect that to be the modus operandi for the Tennessee Titans this week, but as Lions fans, we can have hope, right? Also, the Lions played the Packers pretty tough, and have a team that is playing hard and fighting for interim coach, Darrell Bevell. It will definitely be an interesting game, The Tennessee Titans are a tough team, but if things land just right, we could see the Lions pull one out in an unlikely situation. Detroit Lions Podcast Loves The Chris Spielman Hire It was announced shortly before we recorded that the Lions had hired Chris Spielman as their “Special Assistant to Chairman and President & CEO”. There are a lot of “ands” in that title, so it sounds like a pretty big role. Its big enough that Spielman immediately resigned from calling games for Fox and jumped in with a fire and passion that might be just right for this team right now. We also discuss Matthew Stafford’s surrounding cast throughout his career and some talk about what might be going on with Kenny Golladay. Please Continue To Help With St. Jude Our St. Jude fundraiser will continue through December 18th, so please help out if you can. There are two significant ways in which you can help. Ep: 313 – Green Bay Packers Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman share the good, the bad, and the ugly around the Detroit Lions loss to the Green Bay Packers. To be fair, it was a fun game and the Lions were competitive, but the Green Bay Packers has just a little more in the tank (with some help from the refs) and got it done. Green Bay Packers Games Have a Common Theme There is always controversy when the Lions play the Green Bay Packers. For some reason the officials seem to do their part to ensure a Packers victory when these teams meet. While it wasn’t as egregious a performance as the face mask game, the Lions wound up with an injured quarterback as a result of a terrible call on replay. Marvin caught it, we all know it and saw it, but evidently the officials felt that the Green Bay Packers needed a little extra help. Detroit Lions Podcast Still Saw A Fun Game For the Lions to only lose this game by a touchdown was surprising. Many teams have had 40 burgers hung on them by the Packers this year, and the Lions were able (with a hobbled defense) to keep the game competitive until the very end, and were never really out of it. The other thing that stands out, this was a fun game to watch. It’s been a long time since the Lions were this fun to watch, even in a loss this was a fun game for Lions fans. It’s something that we didn’t really notice until the Bears game, but Lions football had really become a chore to watch. These last two games have been extremely enjoyable. Please Continue To Help With St. Jude Our St. Jude fundraiser will continue through December 18th, so please help out if you can. There are two significant ways in which you can help. Ep 312: Green Bay Packers Game Preview – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and Tony Ortiz preview the Lions game against the Green Bay Packers. With a late game on Sunday the Green Bay Packers are coming to Detroit with Aaron Rodgers and hope to lay more of their brand of dominating football on the Lions. The Lions are fielding a number of injuries, some key, which isn’t going to help their chances. Green Bay Packers Are Favorites The Green Bay Packers are bringing a 9-3 record into Detroit to play a 5-7 Lions team lead by an interim coach who found a divisional victory in his first game since being promoted. This week is a whole different ball of wax, and the Lions are going to need every bounce to go their way in order to put the Packers down. Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones are at the top of their game right now, and Davante Adams could be the best wide receiver in the league at this point. The ‘Smith brothers’ on defense present a formidable challenge for the Lions offense, and help make the Green Bay Packers a total package. Detroit Lions Podcast Sets It Up The Lions have played the Packers pretty toughly the last few years, so there’s still hope for the Lions in this match-up. It’s not guaranteed to be all cheese wheels, but the Lions needs things to go their way. We discuss the injury report, key match-ups, keys to the game, the Vegas odds, and predict the final outcome. We dive in on the migraine vs. concussion issue with D’Andre Swift, and also discuss a bit about a missing key ability for Kenny Golladay – availability. Also, we dive in on the NFC Player of the Week honors from last week, and why (or why not) Matthew Stafford deserved it. Ep: 311 – Lions Look To Green Bay Packers – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the latest Detroit Lions news and information. We break down the win against the Chicago Bears, a look at a series of individual player performances, an analysis of the coaching change, a look ahead to the Green Bay Packers, and we take you ‘Around The Division’. Detroit Lions Podcast Coaching Analysis The Chicago Bears couldn’t hold the Lions down, and after some second half adjustments, the Lions defense finally showed up to a game. Coaches Darrell Bevell and Cory Undlin made some interesting changes to the scheme that gave the players more freedom to utilize their talents and to give fans an entertaining game against the Chicago Bears. It was finally a fun game to watch for Lions fans. The win certainly didn’t hurt but what a difference a coach makes to the enjoyment of a game. We discuss what else it might take for Interim Coach Darrell Bevell to hold down the head coaching position, and make a comparison to a much-loved Lions coach, Wayne Fontes. It was an entertaining game that one can’t help but think had a different outcome that it would have with the previous coaching regime. Green Bay Packers Are In The Way We look ahead to the Green Bay Packers knowing full well that they are one of the best teams in the NFC. There seems to be that little fact that the Lions have consistently played them very closely over the last few years, and the Lions players have a lot to play for. Getting a coach that makes things so much better and helps them have fun with the game they grew up with means a lot to a group of guys like this, and I’d be hard-pressed to say they don’t want to win for the guy that improved their lives so much. We don’t predict the Lions to win, but there’s that small glimmer of hope, and if they were to pull one out against the Green Bay Packers – just wow. After two division victories, Darrell Bevell could be on his way to his first permanent coaching position. Please Continue To Help With St. Jude Our St. Jude fundraiser will continue through December 18th, so please help out if you can. There are two significant ways in which you can help. Ep: 310 – Chicago Bears Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman kick off ‘Victory Sunday’ after the Lions win over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. It was a classic Lions comeback led by Matthew Stafford and with an unexpected game-changing play by the Lions defense. Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell manages to achieve in a single game what Matt Patricia never could in his tenure with Detroit, beat the Chicago Bears – something worth celebrating. Heads up, this is a celebratory podcast. Lions fans deserve to have some fun and enjoy the victory, to savor it, and we’re here to help. Chicago Bears Kept Lions In The Game The Chicago Bears just couldn’t put the Lions away today, they took the leads with an early field goal, but the Lions hung around within striking distance for the entire game. Then, it happened. The defense came up with a crucial turnover and Matthew Stafford led the Lions to another comeback victory. This one was sweeter. After having lost to the Chicago Bears in the last 4 meetings, getting a victory on Bevell’s first game at the helm meant a lot. The game was more fun to watch, and the team reacted well to Bevell. Detroit Lions Podcast Sees Changes Cory Undlin instituted a number of defensive changes, and they made a significant difference in the Lions results. So much so that the Lions only allowed 7 points in the second half. Previously the Lions have averaged more points allowed in the third quarter alone. We saw Matthew Stafford in the shotgun more than we used to, and to good effect. He was turned loose a bit more, and was able to do those Matthew Stafford things we’ve all grown to love. As a fan, the game was a heck of a lot more fun to watch. Overall a good game, with an excellent result and one worth celebrating. The Lions have a long road to recovery ahead, but this was the first step. Ep: 309 – Chicago Bears Game Preview – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Jeff Risdon, and Tony Ortiz preview Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. There is a lot of tension in the Chicago Bears locker room, the Lions on the other hand have just had a weight lifted. We weigh in on both and determine whether the Lions are going to be able to come out on top of the Chicago Bears Chicago Bears Drama In The Locker Room After the Chicago Bears embarrassing loss to Green Bay last Sunday night, Coach Nagy said the team needed to have some “personal pride” as he excoriated the defensive performance. If a player can get angry because a coach tells him he’s on his way to being a Calvin Johnson level receiver, you know damn well something like this can turn a locker room quickly. A Chicago Bears loss this week could very quickly spell the end of Matt Nagy’s time in Chicago with Ryan Pace likely to be right behind him. We discuss whether this gives the players something to play for or against this week, as it adds an interesting angle to the game. Detroit Lions Podcast Addresses The Lions Situation We hadn’t had an opportunity to discuss the Lions Coaching and GM situation with Tony Ortiz yet, so we spend some time discussing what this opportunity means for Darrell Bevell, and what characteristics we’re looking for in a coach and a GM. We discuss post-coach-firing bounce backs and what it could mean for the Lions. There’s also a great article written by Ash Thompson about Bob Quinn restoring the Lions reputation that we discuss ahead of our game preview. We cover the Injury report, Vegas odds, keys to the game, match-ups, and give you a final prediction. We even have a couple of laughs along the way. Ep: 307 – Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn OUT – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff Risdon and Sandman to discuss the breaking news that Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn have been fired by the Detroit Lions organization. Sheila Ford Hamp and Rod Wood held a press conference after the news broke to take questions and delivered a clear message about the current situation. They also did a great job of leaving their options open as the process moves forward. Detroit Lions Podcast Gives Sheila Ford Hamp an ‘A’ Grade So Far Last year the Ford family gave a clear indication of what it would take for the current regime to survive, they didn’t meet the standard, and were thus let go. This is the first appearance by Sheila Ford Hamp in her role as team owner bringing significant change to the Lions organization, and she did so perfectly. Her delivery and ability not to box herself into a bad position with the press served her well in delivering the message of the day, while allowing the process to determine the road forward. So far a great leading hand by Ford Hamp. The Writing Was On The Wall For Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn We’ve discussed it extensively, but the loss to the Carolina Panthers was really the last straw for Matt Patricia as Detroit Lions head coach. We discussed Bob Quinn’s draft success in our last show, and it was obvious that he wasn’t performing where he needed to be either. While Mike Vrabel would have been our preference as head coach, there’s likely no possibility he would have done better with the talent that Bob Quinn gave him. We were all in on this duo, but they’ve shown they didn’t have what it took, and it’s time for the Lions to move toward their inevitable rebuild. Please Continue To Help With St. Jude Our St. Jude fundraiser will continue through December 18th, so please help out if you can. There are two significant ways in which you can help. Ep: 306 – Lions Look To Houston Texans – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff Risdon to discuss the Lions Thanksgiving Day game against the Houston Texans. We also chat about the Carolina Panthers game as a turning point for Coach Matt Patricia and General Manager Bob Quinn. The Houston Texans Present An Interesting Opponent The Houston Texans are having a dumpster fire of a year in 2020, much like the Detroit Lions. There isn’t a whole lot to play for beyond pride and conversely a draft position. Neither team’s leadership is in a position to care too much about draft position, so a game for pride it is. We walk through strengths and weaknesses of the Houston Texans, the injury report, and our final game predictions. Our recommendation? Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and don’t let the Lions (or the Houston Texans) wreck it for you. Its great background noise, but time with your family will be much more productive. Detroit Lions Podcast Looks At Bob Quinn’s Draft Results We take a bit to look back at Bob Quinn’s draft results and what they might mean for his future with the team. We’ll rank hit vs. miss and give you the overall hit percentage for Quinn. Spoiler alert – the team plays like they draft. With that information we discuss whether Quinn, Patricia, or both will be looking for a new employer after this season. This becomes the baseline for some in-depth work we will be doing on the front office hiring process. We hope to arm you with the information you need before the process starts so you can watch along as things unfold and make good assessments in real time. We’ll have guests and content over the course of the next few shows to provide you a deep dive into what happens day-to-day in those jobs, what to expect during the interview, and a lot more. Really good content/information coming even though the football isn’t so hot. Ep: 305 – Carolina Panthers Post Game – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Sandman to discuss the Lions defeat at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. It wasn’t just a game in which the Lions were defeated, but the way in which they lost that was incredibly demoralizing for fans. You could feel the spark of hope being snuffed as the game against the Carolina Panthers played out. Carolina Panthers Stronger Than The Score Indicates There were two touchdowns negated by interceptions in the end zone – but those occurred after the Carolina Panthers marched down the field on long strong drives. The Lions defense seemed to be on the field for the entire game. With no execution on offense, one can’t expect much more that a shutout – and that’s exactly what the Lions anemic offense offered up. Detroit Lions Podcast Analysis There is a lot about to take place with the team’s front office and coaches. We discuss some potential scenarios and the high and low possibilities of each one. How good is the job in Detroit going to be? Who will we be bringing in and how good is the Detroit coaching job? What should we expect? We start the discussion on these items and there will be a lot more in the upcoming shows. Ep: 304 – Carolina Panthers Game Preview – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff Risdon and Tony Ortiz to break down the upcoming Lions Game against the Carolina Panthers. It’s an important game for the Lions to stay relevant, and the Carolina Panthers are ripe to be beaten – what do the guys have to say about the Lions chances? Carolina Panthers Walking Wounded The Detroit Lions aren’t the only team in the NFL hurting, the Carolina Panthers have a number of injuries of their own. Teddy Bridgewater will likely miss, and the Carolina Panthers offensive line will be down two players. Both teams’ quarterbacks are injured and we aren’t sure if wither will play. Looking ahead to a short week, the Lions have a number of key decisions to make. Detroit Lions Podcast Analysis We’ll talk about the Vegas line and why the Carolina Panthers game is likely a game to stay away from, as well as where Chris would put his money if he had to. We’ll also break down important match-ups, Keys to the game, and provide you with our final predictions – spoiler alert – everyone likes the Lions here. Ep: 303 – Lions Look To Carolina Panthers – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case spend some time talking about the Lions win over Washington, discuss what appears to be D’Andre Swift’s breakout game, and go deep on Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn, and the Lions regime. We also provide insight on Matthew Stafford’s injury, talk about losing leads, and look ahead to the Carolina Panthers. Detroit Lions Podcast With So Much To Say It was so great to be back on the mic after a nutty week that kept Chris unavailable and forced us to miss a few shows. We greatly apologize for that, and are so happy to be back. This show might just be the biggest we’ve done on the team’s options around Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia. We discuss scenarios of all levels of probability, and some of them are guaranteed to be nightmare scenes for folks – that’s OK. It’s better to think these things through and make the best choice available while also understanding the reasoning and consequences. We’ll expand on these discussions in the coming weeks and even do some deeper dives on a few possibilities, but right now, the table is open for the Lions. Ep: 302 – Minnesota Vikings Postgame Show – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Sandman discuss the latest Lions loss to the Minnesota Vikings. This matchup has been brutal to the Lions over the years, and in this meeting the Minnesota Vikings prevailed again. The Lions did everything they could to give the game to the Minnesota Vikings, including putting only 10 defenders on the field on a Dalvin Cook 70-yard TD run. It feels like the wheels are fully coming off of this experiment, and the future is not only already written, but written in stone. Minnesota Vikings Blues Beater We talk about the situation for the Lions, their coaching staff, the front office, and the players. We spend some time focusing on Matthew Stafford and try to read the tea leaves about his future. There are definitely questions that need to be answered in this space, and in typical Lions fashion, none of the answers are good one. Worry not though, despite the many requests during the 24-hour podcast-a-thon for St. Jude, Chris would not take donations for drinks – he wanted to be sure he could make it. This time, since the show is only an hour long, Chris went in on the Jägermeister and raised more money for St. Jude – at one point almost drowning himself thanks to a technical glitch along the way. The laughs are definitely worth your time. Check Us Out On YouTube! If you prefer the video version of the podcast, check out the Detroit Lions Podcast YouTube Channel here. Ep: 301 – Lions On To Minnesota Vikings – Detroit Lions Podcast

In this live episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Case, and Jeff Risdon take you through the Lions loss against the Indianapolis Colts, look ahead to the Minnesota Vikings, and talk through the Matthew Stafford Covid/Reserve situation. We also prep you for Friday’s 24-hour Detroit Lions Podcast-a-thon for St. Jude. We have a number of great guests joining us for the show, you will definitely want to join us for that. It all starts at 9:00 am EST at DetroitLionsPodcast.com The Minnesota Vikings Are Beatable Even after their big win against Green Bay, the Minnesota Vikings have flaws. Both of their games against the Green Bay Packers were shoot outs with total scores of at least 50 points. That being said, they have lost to the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons on the way to their 2-5 record. There is also the great match-up of the Lions Everson Griffen vs. Riley Reiff of the Minnesota Vikings. No matter the outcome of the game, that should be a fun match-up to watch for Lions fans. We discuss the possibility of Matthew Stafford playing for the Lions after his trip to the Reserve/Covid list. It is possible, and there are some interesting logistics involved, but it’s still a possibility that Matthew Stafford plays. The good news is that if we have to play Chase Daniel instead of Matthew Stafford, he’s a 2-0 against the Minnesota Vikings, no reason this team shouldn’t be able to help him get to a 3-0 record. Tell Everyone You Know! Our 24-hour Podcast-a-thon St. Jude fundraiser is this coming Friday – November 6th – we’ll have a number of very important guests including Lions players (past and present), Lions coaches, national level sports stars and a whole lot more. Lions fans or not, tell everyone you know to come join us and help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. We’re trying to create a great “Christmas for the Kids” and you are the key to helping make that a reality.
