Chris Rufo on 'America's Cultural Revolution'

INTERVIEW | Christopher Rufo is at the forefront of exposing critical race theory, DEI, and the radical Left’s agenda to undermine traditional American values. His new book, “America's Cultural Revolution: How the Radical Left Conquered Everything,” is a history of the Left’s key figures and its playbook for infiltrating America’s institutions and indoctrinating our children. The book, which debuted at No. 14 on The New York Times' bestseller list Wednesday, profiles four figures who shaped the Left's thinking and strategies: Herbert Marcuse, Angela Davis, Paulo Freire, and Derrick Bell. Rufo's detailed reporting and meticulous research paint a far different picture about them than you'll find in corporate media. Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, spoke about his motivation for documenting the Left's game plan. He also offered his perspective on the counter-revolution that he hopes will ultimately prevail. Listen to our full interview or read a lightly edited transcript at The Daily Signal. Hosted on Acast. A donor of President Joe Biden and appointee purchased artwork by the president’s son, which some ethics experts are saying present an “apparent conflict of interest” and “raises red flags,” according to Fox News. The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appeared before the House Judiciary Committee, where he was grilled by Republicans over the ongoing border crisis. Our colleague Mary Margaret Olohan reports that for more than 120 years, the Daughters of the American Revolution has brought together the female descendants of Revolutionary War heroes to promote “historic preservation, education, and patriotism.” Actor Kevin Spacey has been found not guilty by a jury in Britain Relevant Links Listen to other podcasts from The Daily Signal: https://www.dailysignal.com/podcasts/ Get daily conservative news you can trust from our Morning Bell newsletter: DailySignal.com/morningbellsubscription Listen to more Heritage podcasts: https://www.heritage.org/podcasts Sign up for The Agenda newsletter — the lowdown on top issues conservatives need to know about each week: https://www.heritage.org/agenda Hosted on Acast. Pulling Back Curtain on 'Erosion of Parental Rights' in California

Parents are losing the right to parent in California, according to Karen England. A bill has been introduced in California stating that if parents “do not affirm your child's gender confusion, it's put in the same category as abuse, and it is supposed to be considered when you're battling in a custody battle,” England says. According to England, head of the policy, research, and education organization the Capitol Resource Institute, there has been an “erosion of parental rights” over the past year in California in a more significant way than she has ever seen before. England joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the threats parents are facing in California, and to share why moms and dads across the country should be concerned by what is happening on the west coast. INTERVIEW | ’Tucker,’ the Biography by Chadwick Moore

Chadwick Moore appeared on the final episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on that fateful night in April, just days before Fox News abruptly canceled the show April 24. Carlson and Moore didn’t know it would their last time on Fox News, but it makes Moore’s biography of Carlson all the most interesting—and fortuitous. Moore is the author of “Tucker,” a biography that’s available for pre-order ahead of its Aug. 1 publication by All Seasons Press. Long before taping that interview with Carlson, Moore began work on his biography. It tells the story of the former CNN and MSNBC host who anchored the top-rated primetime show on Fox News for seven years. But the book is about more than Carlson’s TV career. Moore spoke to The Daily Signal about the hundreds of hours he spent interviewing Carlson and others who have influenced his life. INTERVIEW | Why Govt. Doesn't Have Right to 'Take Whatever It Wants of Your Labors,' Federal Budget Expert Explains

It's the duty of Congress to use American tax dollars responsibly, Richard Stern says. American taxpayers deserve to know where their money's going because “the government doesn't have the moral right to walk up and take whatever it wants of your labors because a bureaucrat thinks they know better than you how to use the resources you produced,” says Stern, director of the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) There are 12 appropriations bills that move through Congress each year, and according to Stern, it's the job of lawmakers to ensure that each bill uses Americans' hard-earned taxpayer dollars well, but also the job of the American people to hold their elected officials accountable to do just that. "I think we've ended up in a society where people have kind of quietly thought, 'Maybe the government is better at spending that than I am.' And I think that's been the genesis of the problem," he says. Stern joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what appropriations are and the approval process for them, and why politicians need to be more transparent and responsible when spending taxpayer money. INTERVIEW | Julio Rosas' 2020 Riot Coverage Changed How Americans View Journalism

Julio Rosas, senior writer for Townhall and the author of "Fiery but Mostly Peaceful: The 2020 Riots and the Gaslighting of America," joined me at the Turning Point Action Conference in Palm Beach, Florida, to delve into the rise of citizen journalism and the necessity of wading into the most dangerous situations to expose the worst behavior—even if that means filming the riots from inside the raging crowds. When CNN, MSNBC, and other left-leaning outlets cherry-picked their coverage of the 2020 riots, Rosas stepped in to broadcast them open and unedited—even if that meant stepping in harm’s way: The political and media ecosphere said [the riots] weren’t an issue, that ‘you’re just exaggerating, it’s a mostly peaceful protest, we aren’t grooming kids.’ Now we can respond, ‘What are you talking about? I know this is happening because I’m seeing it firsthand.’ Rosas thinks that seeing footage of riots and school board meetings encouraged more Americans to become politically active. “It’s going to motivate people to get more involved—I think we’ve seen more of a reaction to everything, and [riots and public schools] are just two issues," he said. In this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast,” Rosas outlines what changed in American society after people were shown footage of progressive activism that legacy media had previously ignored. INTERVIEW | Kimberley Strassel on Why Biden Presidency Looks a Lot Like Jimmy Carter Administration

President Joe Biden has a lot in common with one of his fellow Democratic White House predecessors, according to columnist and author Kimberley Strassel. In her new book “The Biden Malaise: How America Bounces Back From Joe Biden's Dismal Repeat of the Jimmy Carter Years,” Strassel details the parallels between Jimmy Carter's 1977-1981 presidency and Biden’s today. Of course, after Carter came President Ronald Reagan, and while Strassel says there is no copy of Reagan running for president in 2024, candidates should learn from Reagan's optimism and vision for the country. Strassel, a member of The Wall Street Journal's editorial board, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the book and to offer her insights into how the U.S. can “bounce back” after the Biden presidency. INTERIVEW | Consumers’ Research Head Breaks Down Dangers of ESG Policies in Investing

Will Hild, executive director of Consumers’ Research, has a message for everyday Americans. “Here’s the only definition of ESG you really need to remember,” Hild says, talking about environmental, social, and governance standards. “ESG is when the financial services industry uses their market power to push through environmental and social policy that they could not get passed through the ballot box.” “So, take the E for example, that stands for environment. What that really means is pushing companies to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Hild says. “S stands for social,” he adds. “What that really means is pushing companies to engage in LGBTQ propaganda, transgender ideology, pro-choice propaganda or policies at the corporate board level, or weighing into board makeup of companies in terms of setting racial and sexual quotas at the board level.” “And then, the G … stands for governance, and that’s really just the enforcement mechanism,” he adds. Consumers’ Research, a nonprofit founded in 1929, describes itself as “an independent educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase the knowledge and understanding of issues, policies, products, and services of concern to consumers and to promote the freedom to act on that knowledge and understanding.” Hild joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the long-term effects of ESG policies, his thoughts on House Republicans’ focus on the subject, and two types of legislation that have been passed on ESG at the state level. That’s the highest rate of overdoses in the history of our nation,” says Cruz, R-Texas. “Two-hundred-thirty-plus years of our nation’s history. We’ve never had that until last year.” “Of those, 70% of those were from Chinese fentanyl coming over the southern border, and it is profoundly dangerous,” he adds. INTERVIEW | What's at Stake If FBI Isn't Fixed

The FBI needs to be fixed, because it has become a threat to the fundamental liberties of Americans, Steve Bradbury of The Heritage Foundation argues in a lengthy new white paper released this week. "The liberty of the American people is under threat from politicized national security agencies, exemplified by the abuses of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Bradbury writes. The Heritage Foundation on Monday published the report authored by Bradbury, a distinguished fellow in the executive vice president’s office there. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Bradbury's nearly 9,800-word report, "How to Fix the FBI," contains "extensive suggestions for Congress to rethink the entire FBI at a fundamental level: to start over from scratch and reconstruct the Bureau to refocus on law enforcement, bring it under meaningful oversight, and restrain it to protect Americans’ constitutional rights." So, what's at stake if the FBI isn't fixed? "Well, the liberties of the American people. That's what's under threat. Do we really have free speech in this country? Do we really have a right to exercise our religious beliefs?" Bradbury says. "Do we have a right to show up and protest at abortion clinics? Do we have a right, do parents have a right to exercise control over the education of their children in public school? All these things are being identified by some in this country as a threat," he adds. Bradbury joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss his report, why he thinks the FBI needs to be fixed, and some of the "11 major elements that we think Congress should consider as part of that mandate to rebuild the FBI." INTERVIEW | How Proposed EPA Electric Vehicle Rule Would Compromise Auto Safety

A proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule that “would limit tailpipe emissions so that in order to comply, auto companies would have to sell 60% of new vehicles as electric by 2030” would adversely affect the safety of cars. So says Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment. (The Daily Signal is The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet.) “Well, since [electric] vehicles are more expensive, people would postpone buying them. So, they would stay with their older cars, and newer cars have more safety features. If they get in an accident, they’re less likely to hurt the passenger,” Furchtgott-Roth says. “So, because of that, you have increases in injuries and fatalities, if you make new cars more expensive. And that’s if you increase [Corporate Average Fuel Economy] standards for normal gasoline-powered vehicles, or you mandate electric vehicles,” she adds. According to the Department of Transportation, CAFE standards are fleetwide averages that must be achieved by each automaker for its car and truck fleet. Furchtgott-Roth joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to further discuss the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule and what environmental benefits the EPA is hoping to accomplish in potentially implementing that rule, as well as the role that China plays in producing electric vehicles. INTERVIEW | Angel Studios CEO Responds to Criticism and Praise for 'Sound of Freedom'

The anti-human trafficking film “Sound of Freedom” has raked in more than $41 million since opening on July 4th. Variety has praised the movie, saying it “makes the desire to “take action” seem more than an action-movie gesture.” And World magazine called the movie a “wake-up call, reminding Americans of the evil that’s perpetrated both inside and outside our borders.” But not all reviews have been positive. The Guardian of London wrote a review of the film titled “Sound of Freedom: the QAnon-adjacent thriller seducing America.” And the website Jezebel called the movie “an Anti-Child Trafficking Fantasy Fit for QAnon.” QAnon is a conspiracy theory involving the belief that a group of Satan worshiping pedophiles control aspects of the "deep state government." Asked why he thinks some left-leaning media outlets have critiqued the film in this way, Angel Studios CEO Neal Harmon says the film is not political. "Everyone who's seen this film knows that it has nothing to do with politics or conspiracy, and that it's just a great, true story, well-told," Harmon says, adding that "if you're on the fence about it, you want to see for yourself, you can pick up a free ticket, and you can find out for yourself what this phenomenon is about." Angel Studios, the streaming platform known for the multi-season series about the life of Christ, "The Chosen," is distributing "Sound of Freedom." Harmon joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the success “Sound of Freedom” has experienced at the box office and to address the praise and criticism of the movie. Harmon also explains how to see the movie for free while it is still in theaters. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. The Biden administration's embrace of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives represents an effort to “create equality of outcomes rather than equality of opportunity,” Tarren Bragdon says. Bragdon, president and CEO of the Foundation for Government Accountability, says the current administration has taken actions to “use the power of the federal government to force certain political goals that really judge people based on the color of their skin, or maybe even their gender identity.” Bragdon joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how the Foundation for Government Accountability is working to expose questionable policies within the Biden administration. INTERVIEW | 'Demonizing the First Amendment': Louisiana Official Blasts Legacy Media Coverage of Biden Big Tech Case

Last week, a federal judge ordered the Biden administration to stop strong-arming Big Tech into silencing Americans' free speech online in a first-of-its-kind temporary injunction. Rather than celebrating this move to uphold free speech, many legacy media outlets appear to be demonizing the very idea of protecting speech from government censorship, according to one of the lead attorneys in the case. Liz Murrill, the solicitor general of Louisiana and co-counsel in the case Missouri v. Biden, spoke with The Daily Signal about the "misinformation or disinformation censorship complex" and criticized media outlets for suggesting that this censorship apparatus is a good thing. INTERVIEW | ‘Shameful’: Expert Assails State Department on Afghanistan ‘After Action’ Report

The State Department has released an After Action Review on Afghanistannearly two years after the U.S.’ catastrophic military withdrawal from that country, which concluded on Aug. 30, 2021. The report was released following a 90-day review and included more than “150 interviews with current and former State Department officials at all levels of the organization and reviewed relevant documents and other materials.” The State Department released the report, finalized in March 2022, on June 30. “It’s just shameful, and starting with the timing of the release, they dropped it on the afternoon of the Friday before the 4th of July, which is just a naked attempt to bury it, to not have anybody pay attention to it,” says Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation. “But fortunately, there is such interest in this topic that they can’t. They can’t hide how bad this is and this is their own people doing the reporting.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Coates adds: The State Department was shifting blame to the Department of Defense, and basically nobody wanted to be left holding the bag. And what the result was, was 13 dead American heroes in Kabul that didn’t need to be sacrificed.Coates joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the State Department’s report and her thoughts on the timing of its release, as well as on the end of Israel’s recent military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin. INTERVIEW | How Clarence Thomas Went From Childhood Sleeping on Dirt Floor to Becoming ‘The People's Justice’

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas grew up with little. He and his younger brother slept on a dirt floor, and their mother struggled to make enough money to feed them. When he was a boy, Thomas’ mother sent him and his brother to live with his grandparents in hopes of a better life. Thomas’ “grandfather raised them with an iron fist,” federal appeals court Judge Amul Thapar says, “and this becomes important as you go through his jurisprudence, because there were a couple of things his grandfather did that impacted a young Clarence Thomas.” Thomas’ grandfather taught him that complaining accomplished nothing, that education was invaluable, and to think for himself, Thapar says. Those principles, he says, have influenced Thomas, now 75, as a Supreme Court justice. But despite Thomas’ commitment to the Constitution, he has faced criticism from the Left over the years, something Thapar contends is a result of the justice’s loyalty to judicial originalism. “Critics need a caricature because they don't like originalism,” Thapar says. “Why? What is originalism at its heart? It returns the power to the American people.” In his new book “The People's Justice: Clarence Thomas and the Constitutional Stories that Define Him,” Thapar details how Thomas has sought through his time on the bench since 1991 to return power to the American people. Thapar, elevated to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by then-President Donald Trump in 2017, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share stories of Thomas’ life and his legacy as a Supreme Court justice. INTERVIEW | Is Your Connection to Israel 'More Than Just a Feeling'?

An ancestry service based in Israel aims to connect people across the globe, helping them explore their family trees and see whether they have any relatives living in the Holy Land today. "People believe that they have a connection to the Holy Land, and I think one of the things we have now through DNA and through family trees is a way to perhaps see whether there's more to that connection than just a feeling," Aaron Godfrey, vice president of Marketing at MyHeritage, told The Daily Signal Podcast in an interview last month. "Perhaps there's a genetic link, perhaps within you, there is some Jewish DNA," Godfrey said. "We have five different strands of Jewish DNA that we're looking at. Perhaps there's relatives that you'll find in your family tree who have moved to Israel. Perhaps there's some record of the family visiting Israel that you never perhaps knew about. And all of this is just a way simply from your own home, finding out whether this connection that you feel in your heart is something more, is something perhaps that actually took place in your story." Godfrey sat down with The Daily Signal at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Orlando last month. Many Israelis spoke at the convention, which prominently featured organizations tying American evangelicals with Jews in the Holy Land. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | The Constitution and Formation of America's Government, Independence Day Series Pt. 3

The American Revolution served as a test to see if the 13 colonies could come together to “identity as a people, as a nation,” Richard Reinsch says. The question after the war was “had they actually become in effect one people and no longer 13 separate colonies or even 13 separate states?” After the war, the Articles of Confederation served as America’s frame of government, but it quickly became apartments that the articles could not successfully create a strong united country, according to Reinsch. “The problem with the Articles of Confederation… is they don't create in effect any central government that can actually regulate, that can tax, that can conduct an authoritative foreign policy, [or] that can regulate commerce,” he said. The founding fathers acknowledged that a central government was needed to bring the diverse states together and create a sustainable union. By the time the founding fathers “go to the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, there's a consensus throughout the 13 states that there's a problem, and that the weak and ineffectual government has to be remedied in some capacity,” Reinsch says. Reinsch joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” for the third part of the show’s Independence Day series to discuss the crafting of the Constitution and how the document became the foundation of American freedom. INTERVIEW | How George Washington Led Nation to Victory in Revolutionary War, Independence Day Series Pt. 2

Many Americans at the time didn't think it was possible to defeat a military power as great as Britain at the start of the Revolutionary War, according to Paul Moreno. "I think just about any historian looking backwards would say, 'Yeah, the odds were certainly very overwhelmingly against the Colonists,'" says Moreno, a professor of history and dean of social sciences at Hillsdale College. The Founding Fathers understood they were risking their "lives and fortunes and honor, but most of them thought that it was a risk that was worth taking, that was justified because their cause was right," he says. It was clear from the start of the war that no man was better equipped to handle the challenges of leading the Continental Army against the British than George Washington. "One of the subtitles of great biographies of Washington is 'The Indispensable Man,' and that's absolutely what he was," Moreno says of Washington, adding that "he was a man of such a character, that he's sort of embodied the virtue that the American people believed their cause and the cause of republican government depended upon." Moreno joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" for the second part of an Independence Day series to discuss how the Colonists, under Washington's leadership, defeated the British to win to Revolutionary War. INTERVIEW | Events and Grievances Leading to the Revolutionary War, Independence Day Series Pt. 1

Taxation was not the only reason the colonists declared their independence from Britain, but it was certainly a factor, according to Bill McClay. "Americans believed in self-government because they lived self-government," says McClay, the Victor Davis Hansen Chair in classical history and western civilization at Hillsdale College. The colonist's desire to maintain self government played a critical role in the decision to declare independence, according to McClay. The Declaration of Independence served as a "press release to the world," McClay says, adding that the document laid out the "what" and "why" of the revolution, but was "much more than that." On July 4th, McClay says Americans "can say, our national birthday commences with this document that expresses these very high and noble imperishable sentiments. 'All men are created equal endowed by their creator with unalienable rights.'" INTERVIEW | How Regulations Threaten New England Fishermen

New England fishermen are facing growing regulations—from the amount of fish they are allowed to catch to large sections of ocean they can no longer work because of “offshore wind development.” “The New England fishermen are the most regulated fishermen in the world,” Jerry Leeman says. Leeman has been fishing in Maine his entire life. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all fishermen. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration collects data and determines how much of a certain kind of fish the fishermen are allowed to process, Leeman says, but the limits have been so greatly reduced in some categories of fish that it is “making it so unviable for us to even make a profit." It's forcing boats either out of the industry or forcing them to lease their quota just to make ends meet. Federal regulations have now reduced the amount of haddock landings for commercial fishermen by more than 80%, Leeman said. The reduction in fish that fishermen are allowed to catch and “offshore wind development,” which is taking over “just under 10 million acres” of ocean, prompted Leeman, along with fisherman Dustin Delano, to create the New England Fishermen's Stewardship Association to advocate for the region's fishermen. The association launched in May to “keep the resource viable for our heritage, for the next generation to be able to process a resource for the U.S. consumer,” Leeman says. If something doesn't change, Leeman says, America will be further "dependent on other nations to feed us with protein resources.” Leeman and Delano join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how New England fishermen are being regulated out of their industry, and what they are doing to preserve commercial fishing for the next generation of New Englanders. INTERVIEW | The Revolt in Russia, Explained

The Wagner Group, mercenaries led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, revolted against the Kremlin over the weekend after its leader claimed the Russian military killed 2,000 of its fighters in Ukraine. Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation, explains that “the Wagner Group is essentially a private paramilitary group run by Prigozhin, who was actually imprisoned for corruption at the end of the Soviet Union and then somehow became [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s private chef, and they established a very close relationship.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Coates also weighs in on whether she thinks the rank-and-file members of the Russian military have lost confidence in Putin. “Well, they’ve certainly lost confidence in the top control of the ministry, particularly [Sergei] Shoigu, the minister of defense, who was never popular,” she says. “And in a way, Putin’s kept him around because he isn’t popular, and he doesn’t threaten Putin’s popularity, and he was an offset to Prigozhin who was an offset to Shoigu.” “So, that kind of arrangement has worked for a while, but if there is a greater perception within Russia than we realize of how poorly the Ukraine war has gone, given the way it was sold as a three-day war, inevitable triumph, that obviously has not turned out to be the case, and the casualties have been horrific. And if that is starting to sink in, he might have another Afghanistan-style situation on his hands, and this could be a real emblem of that,” Coates says. Coates joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to further discuss the events that unfolded in Russia, and what they mean for Putin and his government. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | How Crime Novel Became Reality for 8 Cities With 'Rogue Prosecutors'

Violent criminals are being given a “slap on the wrist” and released back onto the streets in eight cities across America, says author Charles "Cully" Stimson. Between the "defund the police" movement and the election of “[George] Soros' bought-and-paid-for rogue prosecutors, crime exploded,” says Stimson, co-author of the new book “Rogue Prosecutors: How Radical Soros Lawyers Are Destroying America's Communities.” The term “rogue prosecutor” refers to “those who are funded by, or inspired and supported by, the George Soros network,” says Stimson, who is a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation. Stimson's co-author, Zack Smith, is also a legal fellow there. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Soros is a left-wing billionaire who has used his vast wealth to further the Left’s agenda, including spending “$40 million in [district attorney] races,” Stimson says, adding that in cities where these “rogue prosecutors" have been elected with Soros money, crime has spiked. As an example, Stimson compares two cities, “San Diego and Philadelphia, tied as the seventh-largest cities in the United States." "The difference between a real prosecutor in San Diego with [District Attorney] Summer Stephan and a rogue prosecutor like Larry Krasner [in Philadelphia] absolutely impacts your public safety privilege. And both big cities [have] gangs. San Diego [is] right on the border by Tijuana, Mexico. ... Philly's on [Interstate] 95; so, the corridor between Baltimore and New York City. Big highways. Last year ... Philadelphia [had] over 550 murders. San Diego, guess how many? Fifty—10 times less.” Stimson joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the spiking crime trend in cities with rogue prosecutors at the helm and to share stories of the lives of people who have been tragically affected by criminals being released back onto the streets.
