‘It’s Almost Everywhere,’ Scholar Says of China’s Infiltration of America’s K-12 Schools

China’s infiltration of American K-12 schools is “almost everywhere,” according to Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars. “That is, in every state that we’ve looked at, we have found instances of it, but I would say it’s concentrated in the feeder schools to elite education, which means mostly West Coast and East Coast, but not exclusively those,” Wood says. “The effort here is, China’s not just spreading around its resources promiscuously across the land. It’s looking for places where buying influence will yield results in the long term,” he adds. “So, it’s widespread, but much more prevalent here on the East Coast and California.” In April, The Heritage Foundation awarded the National Association of Scholarsits Innovation Prize, which “is intended to spark creative disruption in the conservative movement as we strive to ensure the future of American self-governance.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Wood joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss some of the concerns surrounding the Chinese Communist Party’s influence in our education system and some of the other work the National Association of Scholars has been doing in addition to digging into China’s infiltration of and influence in K-12 schools. State GOP Prohibits Teachers Unions' Money in School-Related Elections

Alabama Republicans have told teachers unions to stay out of their school-related elections. The Alabama Republican Party recently voted to ban GOP candidates for the Alabama Board of Education, local school boards, and county school superintendent from accepting donations from teachers unions. John Wahl, chairman of the Alabama GOP, says the change was needed to ensure that parents, and not special-interest groups, have control over their children’s education. “There's only one purpose that these education unions exist, and that's to lobby for their facet of the education system,” Wahl says. “There's only one reason school boards and superintendents exist, and that is to put forth the policies that regulate the school systems, so it's a direct conflict of interest.” Wahl joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what this change means for protecting parental rights in Alabama. Wahl also weighs in on the priorities of Alabama voters and what we can expect at the first GOP presidential debate on Aug. 23. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. ‘It’s A Little Late,’ Lawmaker Says of Biden’s Executive Order on US Investments in Chinese Technology

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at restricting U.S. investment in certain Chinese high-tech, including artificial intelligence, microelectronics and semiconductors, and quantum information technologies. Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., however, “[thinks] it’s a little late.” “China has been stealing our technology for decades,” says Green, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. “The problem is the high-tech stuff is now fueling their military expansion.” “So, I know about two years ago, maybe a year and a half ago, there was a robotics company that was bought out of Massachusetts,” Green says. “They didn’t buy it for the robotics. They bought it to get the [artificial intelligence] out of the company, and China’s just been doing this left and right.” Green joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to further discuss the executive order, a laboratory in California that reportedly has connections to Chinese pharmaceutical firms, and the Chinese-owned app TikTok. ‘Egregiously Obvious’ That Biden Admin Violated First Amendment Rights, Tech Policy Expert Says

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, recently tweeted a lengthy thread in hopes of exposing Americans to the so-called Facebook Files. Using all capital letters, Jordan wrote July 27: “THE FACEBOOK FILES, PART 1: SMOKING-GUN DOCS PROVE FACEBOOK CENSORED AMERICANS BECAUSE OF BIDEN WHITE HOUSE PRESSURE.” Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also has tweeted about other parts of the “Facebook Files.” Asked by The Daily Signal what the most shocking discovery is so far, Jake Denton, research associate in The Heritage Foundation’s Tech Policy Center, replies that “none of this really came as a surprise, necessarily.” (The Daily Signal is The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet.) “It’s egregiously obvious they were violating our First Amendment rights,” Denton says of the Biden administration, adding: There’s this huge interplay collusion between Big Tech and big government, and then a week later, no one’s talking about it. And I think that the shock factor has gone away, because we just keep seeing it happen. If you’re looking for one element of the [document] drops that kind of stand out from all of them, [it] is the correspondence trying to take down a meme, which kind of just shows you the comedic scale that this has reached, where you have government employees whose daily job is to scroll through Facebook [and] Twitter and critique a meme’s role in the information environment.Mark Zuckerberg heads Meta, parent company of Facebook. Entrepreneur Elon Musk, who bought Twitter in October, recently renamed it X. Denton joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the secrets exposed by the “Facebook Files,” why Americans should be concerned, and what the revelations say about the relationship between social media companies and the Biden administration. Carrie Gress on How Feminist Movement Drew Ideology From the Occult

INTERVIEW: The English Romantic poet Percy Shelley, who died in 1822 at age 29, played a significant role in developing the ideas of the feminist movement, author Carrie Gress says. Ideas of the “the occult, smashing the patriarchy, and free love” played a significant role in Shelley’s writing and ideology, says Gress, author of the new book “The End of Woman: How Smashing the Patriarchy Has Destroyed Us.” Shelley was a “barbaric man” who was “involved in the occult,” Gress says. His wife was Mary Shelley, author of the 1818 novel “Frankenstein,” she notes, and Shelley drew on the ideas of her parents—a vision of a “women’s revolution where there’s no monogamy, there’s no marriage, all of these things are just erased, and people just live this bucolic life without any reference to their human nature.” Shelley’s ideology contributed to the modern feminist movement, a movement that has led to what Gress calls “The End of Woman.” Gress, also a fellow at the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the history of feminism and explain how the feminist movement has harmed women and left women unfulfilled. State Schools Chief Seeks Answers on District’s Reported Ties to Chinese Government

Parents Defending Education’s new report, “Little Red Classrooms,” offers some worrisome information about China’s reach in U.S. K-12 schools through so-called Confucius Classrooms. The report notes that Parents Defending Education “uncovered contracts that show Confucius Classrooms, or other Chinese government-backed programming, are still in operation” in a number of schools throughout the U.S., including Tulsa Public Schools in Oklahoma. “On July 11, 2022, the Tulsa Public Schools board of education approved entering into an agreement with the Confucius Classroom Coordination Offices, which [operate] out of the International Leadership of Texas Global nonprofit,” the report says. “The Chinese International Education Foundation would cover the cost of the program. Carver Middle School offers students a ‘Confucius Connection’ through its ‘Global Awareness’ programming.” Ryan Walters, Oklahoma state superintendent of public instruction, says, “What we did is, we — immediately upon finding this out — we have required the district to turn over any contracts, any curriculum, anything that’s been handed out through this course.” “So, we are actively compiling that from the district right now to do a deep dive into, ‘Hey, what was the Chinese government trying to get in this classroom? What were the teachers discussing in these classes?'” Walters says, adding: So that’s what we’ve required of the district right now. So, we are going to be looking for that information to have a better understanding of what was being funneled into these classrooms.Walters joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Parents Defending Education report, whether he has spoken with any teachers, parents, or students at Tulsa’s Carver Middle School, and Tulsa Public Schools’ response to his Twitter video, “China will not be allowed in Oklahoma schools.” Hosted on Acast. Abortion Activists Turn to Legislation to Target Pregnancy Care Centers

INTERVIEW: Pro-abortion forces have moved from physically attacking pro-life pregnancy care centers to weaponizing legislation against them, according to the Rev. Jim Harden. In recent months, “we started to see an ebb in the violent attacks against pro-life entities and a rise in potential weaponization of legislation specifically targeting pro-life activity in the public square, and specifically even more so pregnancy center activity,” says Harden, CEO of the pro-life New York-based organization CompassCare. In Illinois for example, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill "specifically giving the attorney general in Illinois the … unfettered ability to define what 'deceptive practices' means and what 'misinformation' means when it comes to the activities and speech of pro-life pregnancy centers,” Harden says. Violating the law “comes with $50,000 fines for each occurrence [of spreading misinformation] as they define it,” Harden said. Harden joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ways in which pro-abortion activists are using legislation to target pro-life centers, and to offer advice to these pro-life organizations as to what they can do to protect themselves so they can continue serving the women and babies who need them. Is China Influencing What Your Child Is Learning in School?

Parents Defending Education has released a new report that offers some unsettling information about the reach of the People’s Republic of China in U.S. K-12 schools through so-called Confucius Classrooms. “Confucius Classrooms are a program that is intended to teach children Chinese language and culture, which on its face sounds benign, but some of your viewers, listeners might remember Confucius Institutes, which were the corollary in the university system,” says Nicole Neily, founder and president of Parents Defending Education. Parents Defending Education describes itself on its website as “a national grass-roots organization working to reclaim our schools from activists imposing harmful agendas.” “That’s something that [Cabinet] Secretaries [Betsy] DeVos and [Mike] Pompeo reined in during the Trump administration, because Confucius Institutes at the higher-ed level were actually found by the U.S. State Department to be considered foreign missions of the People’s Republic of China,” Neily says, adding: And so, the fact that these are operating in K-12 schools across the country, even though we have, for the large part, reined in these programs at the higher-ed level, should really concern a lot of people.Neily joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what’s being taught in Confucius Classrooms, some key takeaways of the report, and reactions from U.S. lawmakers about the report. How Unrest in France After Police-Involved Killing Compared With Riots After George Floyd’s Death

Protests and riots erupted following the police-involved fatal shooting of 17-year-old French citizen Nahel Merzouk, who was of Moroccan and Algerian descent, on June 27 in France. Lora Ries, director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at The Heritage Foundation, says “certainly what happened in France takes us directly back to 2020” after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “… and I can’t help but wonder: Has [the] U.S. exported this model, where if someone from a minority community is killed by the police, that these very violent mobs are going to regularly pop up and cause such destruction?” Riesasks. “To be seen, I guess, in France. Unfortunately, the U.S. lived through many months of it in 2020. And a little bit different in terms of what minority group we’re talking about. In this French incident, as Ellie [Krasne-Cohen] explained, the gentleman was of North African descent, and the riots from 2020 that we dealt with in the U.S. was largely about the black community,” Ries says, adding: However, given our immigration situation, mass migration to the U.S. right now, this is going to be an interesting situation to watch.Ries and Ellie Krasne-Cohen, a visiting fellow at Independent Women's Forum and former Heritage Foundation employee who now lives in France, join today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the deadly French shooting, and similarities and differences with how French and U.S. media covered the incident. Ukraine Drones Bring War to Moscow. What Happens Next?

INTERVIEW: Russian officials say three Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow over the weekend, and one of those drones struck a skyscraper in the city. Ukraine has now taken responsibility for the attack. “Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia—to its symbolic centers and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The strike is part of Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensive against Russia. In response to the drone strike, Russia's former president and prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, said, “Just imagine that the offensive … in tandem with NATO succeeded and ended up with part of our land being taken away. Then we would have to use nuclear weapons by virtue of the stipulations of the Russian Presidential Decree," according to a Telegram post reported by CNN. How likely is it that Russia would use nuclear weapons against Ukraine in the coming months? Victoria Coates, Heritage Foundation vice president of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, says that "it's been possible from the beginning," but added that she has "never considered it a particularly likely turn of events." Coates joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how likely it is Ukraine will continue to target civilian infrastructure in Russia, what the results of such targeting might be, and what America’s involvement in the war should look like moving forward. BUSTED: Why Hunter Biden-Justice Department Plea Deal Collapsed

Hunter Biden and his lawyers walked into a courtroom prepared to enter a plea deal with the Justice Department last week. The deal fell through. President Joe Biden’s son was prepared to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and to lying on a gun purchase form. The DOJ lawyers and the younger Biden’s attorneys were ready to sign off on the deal in court, but U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika said she had no intention to “rubber-stamp” the deal. Why? Mike Howell, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, says the plea deal granted the president's son “global immunity for all other conduct.” Asked if he would sign onto the deal if that immunity agreement was removed, Hunter Biden said “no,” according to Howell. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) The Justice Department was offering him “a 'get-out-of-jail-free card' for any future charges that may be brought,” Howell says. Howell joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the role the Oversight Project played in uncovering the details of the plea deal, and what's likely next for Hunter Biden. Enjoy the show! Philanthropist Halts Higher Ed Donations

INTERVIEW | Tom Lewis is among America’s most generous philanthropists. Over more than 20 years, his T.W. Lewis Foundation has funded causes helping children and families, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations like The Heritage Foundation. But he’s now taking a different approach with colleges and universities after a controversy at Arizona State University. Lewis pulled his funding following the school’s mishandling of an event with Charlie Kirk and Dennis Prager in February. The Arizona State event was hosted by the university’s T.W. Lewis Center for Personal Development. It sparked outrage from professors and accusations of censorship from the center’s former executive director. Lewis spoke to The Daily Signal about his decision to pull the funding and the state of higher education in America. Chris Rufo on 'America's Cultural Revolution'

INTERVIEW | Christopher Rufo is at the forefront of exposing critical race theory, DEI, and the radical Left’s agenda to undermine traditional American values. His new book, “America's Cultural Revolution: How the Radical Left Conquered Everything,” is a history of the Left’s key figures and its playbook for infiltrating America’s institutions and indoctrinating our children. The book, which debuted at No. 14 on The New York Times' bestseller list Wednesday, profiles four figures who shaped the Left's thinking and strategies: Herbert Marcuse, Angela Davis, Paulo Freire, and Derrick Bell. Rufo's detailed reporting and meticulous research paint a far different picture about them than you'll find in corporate media. Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, spoke about his motivation for documenting the Left's game plan. He also offered his perspective on the counter-revolution that he hopes will ultimately prevail. Listen to our full interview or read a lightly edited transcript at The Daily Signal. Hosted on Acast. The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appeared before the House Judiciary Committee, where he was grilled by Republicans over the ongoing border crisis. Our colleague Mary Margaret Olohan reports that for more than 120 years, the Daughters of the American Revolution has brought together the female descendants of Revolutionary War heroes to promote “historic preservation, education, and patriotism.” Actor Kevin Spacey has been found not guilty by a jury in Britain Relevant Links Listen to other podcasts from The Daily Signal: https://www.dailysignal.com/podcasts/ Get daily conservative news you can trust from our Morning Bell newsletter: DailySignal.com/morningbellsubscription Listen to more Heritage podcasts: https://www.heritage.org/podcasts Sign up for The Agenda newsletter — the lowdown on top issues conservatives need to know about each week: https://www.heritage.org/agenda Hosted on Acast. Pulling Back Curtain on 'Erosion of Parental Rights' in California

Parents are losing the right to parent in California, according to Karen England. A bill has been introduced in California stating that if parents “do not affirm your child's gender confusion, it's put in the same category as abuse, and it is supposed to be considered when you're battling in a custody battle,” England says. According to England, head of the policy, research, and education organization the Capitol Resource Institute, there has been an “erosion of parental rights” over the past year in California in a more significant way than she has ever seen before. England joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the threats parents are facing in California, and to share why moms and dads across the country should be concerned by what is happening on the west coast. Chadwick Moore appeared on the final episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on that fateful night in April, just days before Fox News abruptly canceled the show April 24. INTERVIEW | Why Govt. Doesn't Have Right to 'Take Whatever It Wants of Your Labors,' Federal Budget Expert Explains

It's the duty of Congress to use American tax dollars responsibly, Richard Stern says. American taxpayers deserve to know where their money's going because “the government doesn't have the moral right to walk up and take whatever it wants of your labors because a bureaucrat thinks they know better than you how to use the resources you produced,” says Stern, director of the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) There are 12 appropriations bills that move through Congress each year, and according to Stern, it's the job of lawmakers to ensure that each bill uses Americans' hard-earned taxpayer dollars well, but also the job of the American people to hold their elected officials accountable to do just that. "I think we've ended up in a society where people have kind of quietly thought, 'Maybe the government is better at spending that than I am.' And I think that's been the genesis of the problem," he says. Stern joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what appropriations are and the approval process for them, and why politicians need to be more transparent and responsible when spending taxpayer money. INTERVIEW | Julio Rosas' 2020 Riot Coverage Changed How Americans View Journalism

Julio Rosas, senior writer for Townhall and the author of "Fiery but Mostly Peaceful: The 2020 Riots and the Gaslighting of America," joined me at the Turning Point Action Conference in Palm Beach, Florida, to delve into the rise of citizen journalism and the necessity of wading into the most dangerous situations to expose the worst behavior—even if that means filming the riots from inside the raging crowds. When CNN, MSNBC, and other left-leaning outlets cherry-picked their coverage of the 2020 riots, Rosas stepped in to broadcast them open and unedited—even if that meant stepping in harm’s way: The political and media ecosphere said [the riots] weren’t an issue, that ‘you’re just exaggerating, it’s a mostly peaceful protest, we aren’t grooming kids.’ Now we can respond, ‘What are you talking about? I know this is happening because I’m seeing it firsthand.’ Rosas thinks that seeing footage of riots and school board meetings encouraged more Americans to become politically active. “It’s going to motivate people to get more involved—I think we’ve seen more of a reaction to everything, and [riots and public schools] are just two issues," he said. In this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast,” Rosas outlines what changed in American society after people were shown footage of progressive activism that legacy media had previously ignored. President Joe Biden has a lot in common with one of his fellow Democratic White House predecessors, according to columnist and author Kimberley Strassel. INTERIVEW | Consumers’ Research Head Breaks Down Dangers of ESG Policies in Investing

Will Hild, executive director of Consumers’ Research, has a message for everyday Americans. “Here’s the only definition of ESG you really need to remember,” Hild says, talking about environmental, social, and governance standards. “ESG is when the financial services industry uses their market power to push through environmental and social policy that they could not get passed through the ballot box.” “So, take the E for example, that stands for environment. What that really means is pushing companies to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Hild says. “S stands for social,” he adds. “What that really means is pushing companies to engage in LGBTQ propaganda, transgender ideology, pro-choice propaganda or policies at the corporate board level, or weighing into board makeup of companies in terms of setting racial and sexual quotas at the board level.” “And then, the G … stands for governance, and that’s really just the enforcement mechanism,” he adds. Consumers’ Research, a nonprofit founded in 1929, describes itself as “an independent educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase the knowledge and understanding of issues, policies, products, and services of concern to consumers and to promote the freedom to act on that knowledge and understanding.” Hild joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the long-term effects of ESG policies, his thoughts on House Republicans’ focus on the subject, and two types of legislation that have been passed on ESG at the state level. That’s the highest rate of overdoses in the history of our nation,” says Cruz, R-Texas. “Two-hundred-thirty-plus years of our nation’s history. INTERVIEW | What's at Stake If FBI Isn't Fixed

The FBI needs to be fixed, because it has become a threat to the fundamental liberties of Americans, Steve Bradbury of The Heritage Foundation argues in a lengthy new white paper released this week. "The liberty of the American people is under threat from politicized national security agencies, exemplified by the abuses of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Bradbury writes. The Heritage Foundation on Monday published the report authored by Bradbury, a distinguished fellow in the executive vice president’s office there. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Bradbury's nearly 9,800-word report, "How to Fix the FBI," contains "extensive suggestions for Congress to rethink the entire FBI at a fundamental level: to start over from scratch and reconstruct the Bureau to refocus on law enforcement, bring it under meaningful oversight, and restrain it to protect Americans’ constitutional rights." So, what's at stake if the FBI isn't fixed? "Well, the liberties of the American people. That's what's under threat. Do we really have free speech in this country? Do we really have a right to exercise our religious beliefs?" Bradbury says. "Do we have a right to show up and protest at abortion clinics? Do we have a right, do parents have a right to exercise control over the education of their children in public school? All these things are being identified by some in this country as a threat," he adds. Bradbury joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss his report, why he thinks the FBI needs to be fixed, and some of the "11 major elements that we think Congress should consider as part of that mandate to rebuild the FBI." INTERVIEW | How Proposed EPA Electric Vehicle Rule Would Compromise Auto Safety

A proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule that “would limit tailpipe emissions so that in order to comply, auto companies would have to sell 60% of new vehicles as electric by 2030” would adversely affect the safety of cars. So says Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment. (The Daily Signal is The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet.) “Well, since [electric] vehicles are more expensive, people would postpone buying them. So, they would stay with their older cars, and newer cars have more safety features. If they get in an accident, they’re less likely to hurt the passenger,” Furchtgott-Roth says. “So, because of that, you have increases in injuries and fatalities, if you make new cars more expensive. And that’s if you increase [Corporate Average Fuel Economy] standards for normal gasoline-powered vehicles, or you mandate electric vehicles,” she adds. According to the Department of Transportation, CAFE standards are fleetwide averages that must be achieved by each automaker for its car and truck fleet. Furchtgott-Roth joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to further discuss the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule and what environmental benefits the EPA is hoping to accomplish in potentially implementing that rule, as well as the role that China plays in producing electric vehicles. The anti-human trafficking film “Sound of Freedom” has raked in more than $41 million since opening on July 4th. Variety has praised the movie, saying it “makes the desire to “take action” seem more than an action-movie gesture.” And World magazine called the movie a “wake-up call, reminding Americans of the evil that’s perpetrated both inside and outside our borders.” But not all reviews have been positive. The Guardian of London wrote a review of the film titled “Sound of Freedom: the QAnon-adjacent thriller seducing America.” And the website Jezebel called the movie “an Anti-Child Trafficking Fantasy Fit for QAnon.” QAnon is a conspiracy theory involving the belief that a group of Satan worshiping pedophiles control aspects of the "deep state government." Asked why he thinks some left-leaning media outlets have critiqued the film in this way, Angel Studios CEO Neal Harmon says the film is not political. "Everyone who's seen this film knows that it has nothing to do with politics or conspiracy, and that it's just a great, true story, well-told," Harmon says, adding that "if you're on the fence about it, you want to see for yourself, you can pick up a free ticket, and you can find out for yourself what this phenomenon is about." Angel Studios, the streaming platform known for the multi-season series about the life of Christ, "The Chosen," is distributing "Sound of Freedom." Harmon joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the success “Sound of Freedom” has experienced at the box office and to address the praise and criticism of the movie. Harmon also explains how to see the movie for free while it is still in theaters. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices.
