INTERVIEW: How Is 'Liberal Woke Takeover' Affecting Journalism?
Amber Athey, author of the newly released book "The Snowflakes' Revolt: How Woke Millennials Hijacked American Media," is weighing in on how the "liberal woke takeover" is affecting journalism and journalistic standards. "The way that this strain of progressivism approaches journalism is completely divorced from what we traditionally understand as journalistic ethics and standards," said Athey, Washington editor for the Spectator. "These individuals believe that the media is just another platform for which they can advance political activism, and they've rewritten the rules of journalism to reflect that," says Athey, who previously covered the White House for The Daily Caller and hosts a weekly radio show, "Unfit to Print," on WCBM-680 in Baltimore. "So, it's no longer about objectively trying to find the facts and get somewhere close to the truth and presenting facts to the reader so they can make their own decisions." Athey adds: It's now about fighting on behalf of the downtrodden, or "speaking truth to power," or making sure that you are not causing offense to marginalized groups.Athey joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss some examples of this liberal woke takeover of the media that she’s referring to, whether she thinks this liberal takeover was inevitable or could have been prevented, and how conservatives can work to counter the influence of these corporate media outlets. INTERVIEW | Will Supreme Court Hear Abortion Pill Case? Plaintiffs' Attorney Weighs In
On Good Friday, a federal judge in Texas handed down a potentially historic abortion ruling. The case at hand revolves around the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. In 2000, the FDA approved the use of mifepristone to be used along with the drug misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy. But some medical experts have argued the FDA's approval was rushed and unlawful. In 2022, a group of pro-life medical professionals and an organization represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal organization, filed a lawsuit against the FDA arguing that it had improperly approved the abortion pill, and federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk for the Northern District of Texas agreed. “The Court does not second-guess FDA’s decision-making lightly,” Kacsmaryk wrote in his ruling. “But here, FDA acquiesced on its legitimate safety concerns—in violation of its statutory duty—based on plainly unsound reasoning and studies that did not support its conclusions.” Denise Harle, Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel, joins the show today to discuss what the ruling means and the likelihood of the case ultimately rising to the Supreme Court. Harle also breaks down a ruling the same day by a judge in Washington state in favor of continued access to the abortion pill. Enjoy the show. INTERVIEW | Justice Comes to Call on Jane's Revenge Following Attacks on Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers
The attorney general of Florida, together with a religious liberty legal group, is suing Jane’s Revenge for targeting and attacking pro-life pregnancy resource centers. “If you use violence to injure or intimidate … pregnancy care centers across the country, you will be held accountable,” says Jeremy Dys, special counsel for litigation and communications at First Liberty. First Liberty has joined a lawsuit filed by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody against Caleb Freestone and Amber Smith-Stewart. According to Moody, Freestone and Smith-Stewart are members of the far-left group Antifa and the radical pro-abortion group Jane’s Revenge. The Plano, Texas-based national legal group and Moody contend that Freestone and Smith-Stewart violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, accused of vandalizing three Florida pregnancy help centers after the leak last May of the draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade on abortion in late June. “We believe that violence is never a lawful response to political disagreement,” Dys says, adding that the “law compels this lawsuit to hold them accountable.” The suit is seeking $170,000 in penalties against each defendant who stands accused of vandalizing three Florida pregnancy resource centers. Dys joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how the members of Jane’s Revenge were identified and the consequences they could face. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Media Watchdog Group Holds Stanford Law School Accountable for Disrespecting Conservative Judge
Judge Kyle Duncan, a conservative on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, arrived on the Stanford Law School campus on March 9. He was there to deliver remarks to students at an event hosted by the campus Federalist Society group, but Duncan never had the opportunity to deliver his talk. Upon entering the lecture call, students began heckling Duncan, preventing him from speaking. Finally Tirien Steinbach, associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Stanford Law, stood up and took the podium. For about six minutes, she spoke to the students and to Duncan. “For many people in this law school … your advocacy, your opinions from the bench land as absolute disenfranchisement of their rights,” Steinbach said. When Duncan tried to respond, Steinbach told the judge, “Please let me finish.” Multiple students began shouting, “Let her finish” as they pounded their desks. Duncan stood by and allowed Steinbach to complete her lecture. Now, the media watchdog group Accuracy in Media is calling on Stanford Law to dismiss Steinbach. “These crybullies throw metaphorical punches all day long and they never have to take one in return, and that's where we step in," Adam Guillette, president of Accuracy in Media, says. Accuracy in Media has a mobile billboard on the Stanford campus naming the students who heckled Duncan and calling for Steinbach’s termination. The law school did issue an apology and has placed Steinbach on paid leave, but has stopped short of terminating her. “These people, who think they know it all and seek to lecture federal judges, don't even apply the basic level of common sensewhich makes sense because they don't apply the basic level of civility,” Guillette says. Guillette joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" today to explain how Accuracy in Media is advocating that Steinbach be fired. He also explains how his organization has gone undercover in public schools to expose how classrooms teach diversity, equity, and inclusion. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Rabbi Pinchas Taylor Explains History, Power of Passover
Passover begins with a Seder meal to “remember what our ancestors went through,” Rabbi Pinchas Taylor says. “You do physical actions and experience physical tastes and motions and whatnot to … not only tell over the story, but reexperience the story as it took place,” says Taylor, the author of “Pillars of Faith” and “A Jewish Guide to the Mysterious.” Passover begins at sunset on Wednesday, and in addition to celebrating the Jews’ deliverance from the Egyptians, Taylor says Passover is also a time to reflect on how we can each leave our “own inner-Egypt.” “What are the things that are holding me back?” Taylor encourages all to ask during the week of Passover. “What is constraining me? What is limiting me in my life? And how can I make the proper steps to liberate myself? Because when a person takes that first step, God helps them along the way as well. God will split seas for those that walk courageously forward.” Taylor joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how the Jewish community continues to celebrate Passover and the symbolism behind the traditions. Finland is joining NATO, and Victoria Coates says Russia is less than pleased. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) INTERVIEW | Energy Expert Stresses Need for More Pipelines After Train Derailment
An energy expert says the Feb. 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, underscores the need for more pipelines to transport potentially hazardous substances. "This recent rail accident in East Palestine in Ohio has shown us that we need more pipelines to carry these potential dangerous chemicals, rather than using road and rail," says Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "Because with pipelines, the container stays still and the product moves within it. And the pipelines are often buried in the ground," Furchtgott-Roth says. "So, they're out of the way of other traffic, pedestrians, anyone like that, and the potential damage is very, very low." Furchtgott-Roth added: With rail and truck, these substances are going through people's communities, and they are generally very safe, but occasionally accidents do happen. But pipelines are the safest way of transporting oil and natural gas.Furchtgott-Roth joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss Thursday's passage of HR 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act, in the House of Representatives and her thoughts on President Joe Biden’s anticipated veto of the bill. INTERVIEW | Biden Earns an ‘F’ on Energy Policies, Lawmaker Says as House OKs GOP Bill to Lower Costs
When it comes to President Joe Biden’s energy policies, he has earned “an F,” says Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont. The vote was 225-204 with four Democrats joining the Republican majority and one GOP member voting against it, according to CBS News. INTERVIEW | Asian Studies Expert Suggests Ways to Diminish China’s Threat to Taiwan
A leading Asian studies expert is weighing in on how the U.S. can diminish the threat China poses to Taiwan, even as tensions between the two countries remain high. "I think the first thing we need to do is clear a backlog of arms sales to Taiwan. We sell Taiwan advanced military hardware, and a number of important platforms that the Taiwanese have purchased have been backlogged, and this has been going on for years now," says Jeff Smith, director of The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "The second thing we need to do, I think, is help the Taiwanese to develop even better deterrence strategies and denial strategies and acquisitions," Smith says. "What can we do? What are the most effective military platforms that Taiwan could purchase and use in order to deny China if it decides to launch an invasion or at least to hold out long enough for the cavalry?" It's widely though that the U.S.—and possibly others, including Australia and Japan—would intervene in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Smith joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how the Chinese government has infiltrated our lives; The Heritage Foundation's newly released report "Winning the New Cold War: A Plan for Countering China”; and the U.S. fentanyl crisis. INTERVIEW | What You Need to Know About Israeli Protests
With hundreds of thousands of Israelis taking to the streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem over reforms to the judicial system proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, what are Americans to make of it? "Well, basically, what Netanyahu is proposing is to make the appointments of the judges less political and their powers less sweeping. The Supreme Court has been a very sort of left-leaning element in the Israeli government," says Victoria Coates, senior research fellow in international affairs and national security with the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "And so, it's a reform that a number of Israelis support, but making it somewhat more controversial is the fact that the prime minister himself is under investigation for various charges of corruption and bribery," Coates says. "And so, there is a perception—which I personally don't think is true—but that there's a broad public perception that he is trying to manipulate the courts for his own legal gain." Coates further discussed the significance of the protests. "I think it's really remarkable, and the estimates are as many as 700,000 people were out in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem last night, and that's a country of 9 million people," Coates says. "So, you're coming up on 10% of the country is participating in this. I think it certainly demonstrates how passionately Israelis feel about their politics and about their country, and the degree to which they feel participant in this process." Coates joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss why Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, whether the protests could have larger ramifications for Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, and what the response has been like from the Biden administration. INTERVIEW | 'I've Had to File a Few Police Reports,' Libs of TikTok Creator Says
Chaya Raichik, the creator of Libs of TikTok, says she has "had to file a few police reports from threats" that she received. "That's really part of the reason why I was anonymous to begin with, because as I started exposing all this stuff, the Left started coming after me and their reaction is not something that I ever expected," Raichik, author of the children’s book, “No More Secrets: The Candy Cavern," says. "And then when I saw that, the backlash and the way that they just wanted to silence me in any way they can, I was like, 'I think I'm going to stay anonymous because this is actually pretty scary.'" "But then of course, I was doxxed, so my name was shared and I couldn't really be anonymous anymore. But I think at this point, I view it as sort of a compliment," Raichik says. Raichik adds: If you're not getting attacked, whether that's in the form of death threats or just in the form of name calling, harassment, insulting, bullying, if you're not being the victim of any that on the Right, then I think you're doing something wrong.Raichik joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what she thinks has contributed to her page’s success over the last two and half years, the most outrageous video she's ever seen on TikTok, and her response to people who say that she's anti-LGBTQ. INTERVIEW | US Patent System Needs to Be Fixed, Inventor Rights Activist Says
An American inventor is speaking out about a law he says has significantly affected the country's ability "to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries." "We're a 501(c)(4) [tax-exempt organization], and our mission is to restore to America something that has been actually just totally destroyed by Big Tech," Randy Landreneau, president of US Inventor, tells The Daily Signal. "And what that is is that if you're an inventor and you invent something really valuable, and you get a patent on it, you're supposed to have the legal ability to stop a large entity from just taking it, and that is what our patent system was created for." Landreneau has numerous patents and owns Complete Product Development, which is "a product design and prototyping company based in Clearwater, Fla.," according to his US Inventor biography page. "That's what worked so well in America for 200 years, what enabled us to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries, etc.," Landreneau says. "And Big Tech got a law passed about 10 years ago that really drastically destroyed that. It made it virtually impossible now to stop a large entity from simply taking what you had invented and patented." Landreneau was referring to the America Invents Act, which was passed by Congress and signed into law in 2011 by then-President Barack Obama, who at the time said the “much-needed reform will speed up the patent process so that innovators and entrepreneurs can turn a new invention into a business as quickly as possible.” Landreneau joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the U.S. patent system and some of the challenges he and other U.S. inventors are facing today. INTERVIEW | TikTok's 'National Security Threat Is So Grave,' Tech Policy Expert Says
A leading technology policy expert is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok" a day before the Chinese-owned social media app's chief executive officer will testify before Congress. TikTok faces bipartisan scrutiny at both the state and federal level. More than 30 states, led by both Democrat and Republican governors, have taken action to ban the app on some or all state-issued devices and networks, The Daily Signal previously reported. TikTok’s chief executive officer, Shou Zi Chew, will appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday. "I think the TikTok national security threat is so grave, so immediate, that TikTok should be banned outright," says Kara Frederick, director of the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Frederick, whose research focuses on emerging technology policy and Big Tech, adds that she is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok, not just on government devices." She talks about the danger of "allowing U.S. user data to get in the hands of the [Chinese Communist Party]." Frederick joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the TikTok CEO's testimony, what she would ask Shou if she were in the hearing, and The Heritage Foundation's "Moms Against TikTok" rally, which is also on Thursday. INTERVIEW | Will Trump Be Arrested? Legal Expert Zack Smith Weighs In
Former President Donald Trump said over the weekend he expects to be arrested. “WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK,” Trump wrote Saturday morning on his social media platform Truth Social, adding: “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” Trump’s comments come as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has been leading an investigation into supposed hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. “We don’t really know a lot of the facts and information surrounding these charges,” Zack Smith, a legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, says, adding “we have to wait and see” what will happen regarding a possible indictment of the former president. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) For Bragg, “there’s certainly political implications to this investigation,” Smith said, going on to explain that Bragg “knows, as any of these local, left-leaning district attorneys know, if they were to indict Donald Trump, a former president, something that’s never been done before in the history of our nation, it would immediately catapult them onto the national stage.” Smith joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what we do know about the investigations against Trump and what an indictment would mean for the former president, who is seeking a return to the Oval Office in 2025. INTERVIEW | CEO of Pregnancy Center Calls Out FBI, Justice Department for Failure to Act After Second Attack
The leaders of the pregnancy help center CompassCare in Buffalo, New York, were concerned they might face another attack amid court proceedings over access to abortion pills. The Rev. Jim Harden, CompassCare CEO, contacted the FBI in February raising those concerns. He says the FBI failed to answer him. "I asked the FBI," Harden said, "if they were going to be issuing any kind of threat alert to Christian pro-life people and organizations, and whether or not they're going to be adding protection, security protection to that judge [handling the abortion pill case]. They did not respond." On Wednesday, CompassCare was attacked for the second time within the past nine months. Around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, surveillance footage shows an individual wearing a hoodie walk up to the front of the pregnancy center and spray paint the word “Liars” over the CompassCare sign. The individual then turns and walks away back down the street. “This fits the definitions of domestic terror," Harden said, adding: “Those in the FBI and DOJ who refuse to treat it as such need to be fired and investigated." This was the second pro-abortion attack CompassCare has faced. In June, the radical pro-abortion group Jane’s Revenge took responsibility for firebombing the pro-life center and spray painting the words “Jane was here” on the side of the building. The FACE Act, or the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, prohibits the intentional destruction or damage of reproductive health care facilities, which includes both abortion facilities and pregnancy centers. President Joe Biden’s DOJ charged 26 pro-life activists with FACE Act violations in 2022, but did not charge any pro-abortion activist with FACE Act charges last year, despite Catholic Vote trackers reporting more than 100 apparent pro-abortion attacks on pro-life pregnancy resource centers and churches across the nation. Harden joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why he thinks Biden’s DOJ and the FBI have failed to take action against those who are attacking pro-life organizations and churches. INTERVIEW | What Ex-State Department Official Would Have House Committee Ask TikTok CEO
Keith Krach, former undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment in the Trump administration, is adamant about what questions he would have lawmakers ask TikTok's chief executive officer, Shou Zi Chew, during Shou's appearance before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23. "Well, maybe the first thing I'd ask him is, 'Are there members of the [Chinese] Communist Party on your board?' And the answer would be 'yes,'" says Krach, who chairs the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue University. "I think the other questions I would ask him would be around China's National Security Intelligence Act that requires any Chinese company, state-owned or otherwise, or any Chinese individual, to turn over any data, proprietary information, anything of that sort, data upon request of the Chinese Communist Party," Krach added, "And if you don't do that, you're going to go to prison. I would ask him about that." Krach joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss some of the national security concerns surrounding the Chinese-owned app TikTok and Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming meeting in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week. INTERVIEW | Ranked Choice Voting Is 'Spreading Like Poison,' Alaskans for Honest Elections Founder Says
The founder of Alaskans for Honest Elections is speaking out against ranked choice voting, which he says is "spreading like poison." "Ranked choice voting is a whole way that certain people want to redefine how we vote. It's no longer one person, one vote. It's a very complicated system where everybody's thrown into a jungle primary," Art Mathias, president and founder of Wellsprings Ministry in Anchorage, Alaska, tells The Daily Signal. "Our House race to replace [Rep.] Don Young was 48 people trying to make it through that to become the top four. Then the top four go through a campaign to a runoff. So, if you're not extremely well-known, if you don't have a lot of money, you're not going to go any place in the race," Mathias says. Young, a Republican who held Alaska's sole at-large House seat from 1973 until 2022, was the longest-serving Republican in congressional history. He died a year ago this week on March 18, 2022. The ranked choice election for the seat was won by a Democrat, Mary Peltola. Mathias adds: So, you end up with somebody that had only 10% in the primary actually winning at the other end. It's very complicated. People don't like it. Very expensive. It discourages voter turnout. It's not a good deal, and it's spreading like poison.Mathias joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the importance of election integrity, how big the movement around ranked choice voting is, and what's at stake if Alaska continues to use ranked choice voting. INTERVIEW | Todd Bensman on How Biden's 'La Invitacion' to Illegal Aliens Triggered Border Crisis
In 2021, Todd Bensman stood on the edge of the Rio Grande River with a cartel member. Despite usually trying to avoid the cartels, Bensman found himself interviewing the man, who happened to be on vacation after guiding a group of illegal aliens into Texas. “He had his cocaine. He had a couple of friends there. He had a couple of women there for hire, and that's how he was doing his vacation, under the bridge, drinking beer,” Bensman said of the cartel member. "To what do you owe this great prosperity?" Bensman recalls asking the man. “La invitacion,” the cartel member responded. When Bensman pressed the man as to what he meant, the cartel member explained that President Joe Biden had communicated to the world that the doors to America are open, creating an exceptional business market for the cartels. Bensman, author of "Overrun: How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. History,” joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share stories from his years of reporting on the southern border and the reality of the current illegal immigration crisis. INTERVIEW | 'Bail Out Rich People': Economist Shares What to Know About Biden Administration's Silicon Valley Bank Action
The “rich people” with money in Silicon Valley Bank are the real winners in President Joe Biden's handling of the California-based bank’s collapse, economist Peter St Onge says. After the fall of Silicon Valley Bank over the weekend, the Biden administration announced that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. will cover all depositors' money there. Normally, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is responsible for covering deposits up to $250,000, ensuring that most small businesses and individuals are financially protected from a collapse. But in this case, the FDIC is going far beyond that $250,000 cap to cover every deposit in Silicon Valley Bank, regardless of the amount. “If the administration gets away with this, then we are going to start moving into a world where bankers, where Wall Street, feels like they can take any risk they like, because this is all going to get bailed out because you've got these human shields,” St Onge, a research fellow in economics at The Heritage Foundation, says. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.) Ultimately, the federal government’s actions to protect Silicon Valley depositors probably will result in higher inflation, St Onge says. “I think we're very likely to see a lot more inflation,” he says. St. Onge joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how Silicon Valley Bank collapsed and what Biden’s actions mean for the nation's economy. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast.
