INTERVIEW | Dr. Aaron Kheriaty on How Governments Abuse Public Health Crises Like COVID-19 to Gain Power
Many COVID-19 restrictions and mandates have been rolled back, but the infrastructure remains in place, “ready and waiting for the next declared public health crisis,” Dr. Aaron Kheriaty says. Kheriaty, a psychiatrist who directs the Bioethics and American Democracy program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, chose to speak out against the COVID-19 vaccine mandates, That decision cost him his job at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Kheriaty says he is concerned that the "pretext of public health and safety has proven to be a good fulcrum, a good lever to get people to do things that otherwise they would be very reluctant to do." "It's also been an occasion for the accumulation of power, mostly by the executive branch of government," he says. In his new book "The New Abnormal: The Rise of the Biomedical Security State,” Kheriaty details the ways in which governments past and present have used public health crises to gain power. Kheriaty joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how, unless placed in check, the government will use public health orders to further its own agenda, whether about COVID-19, climate change, or abortion. INTERVIEW | Preston Brashers on Why Your Tax Refund Could Be Smaller This Year
It's that time of the year once again, tax season. While the process of filing taxes is often arduous, the hope of a sizable tax refund removes a little pain from the ordeal. But, with an economy like the one we have right now, Preston Brashers, a Heritage Foundation senior policy analyst for the federal budget, says it's possible some Americans are going to see smaller refunds this year. While there are a number of factors contributing to the likely smaller refunds, Brashers says "the big one that that's maybe being left out of this whole conversation is inflation." Brashers points out that the "IRS does do an inflation adjustment," but the "issue is they do that inflation adjustment in the fall of the prior year. So I think most of the most people can recognize things are a little bit more expensive now than they were in say, September, October of 2021. And so you're effectively being taxed like you're maybe 8% richer than you actually are because the value of the dollar, essentially your purchasing power, has gone down." Brashers joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain all the reason why Americans could be getting less back from the IRS this year, and to discuss what Congress and the White House should do to lower inflation. INTERVIEW | Former CIA Analyst Stella Morabito on How Anthony Fauci Symbolizes 'Weaponization of Loneliness'
Tyrants gain control through weaponizing the fear of loneliness, author and former CIA analyst Stella Morabito says. In America, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the omnipresent voice of the COVID-19 pandemic, is one example of this, she says. “I believe that he symbolizes for our era the weaponization of loneliness,” Morabito, a senior contributor at The Federalist, says of Fauci. “When you think about what all these COVID mandates did to our society: the lockdowns, the devastation in human relationships, the way that it created hostilities, even among family members." “When COVID hit, our loneliness, our isolation [grew], especially for people [who] lived alone, being put under house arrest ... for at least months, and some people afraid to come out," she says. "I mean, this was the enforcement of our isolation—literal, blatant enforcement. And I think Fauci symbolizes all of that. More than symbolizes it, I mean, he directed so much of it.” In her new book “The Weaponization of Loneliness: How Tyrants Stoke Our Fear of Isolation to Silence, Divide, and Conquer,” Morabito, who has a master's degree in Russian and Soviet history, explains how the powerful use the fear of loneliness as a tool to gain and maintain authority. Morabito joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how her previous work at the CIA, which focused on studying propaganda, led her to write the book, and how Americans can reject tyranny. INTERVIEW | Police Officer Jacob Kersey Explains Why He Resigned After Backlash on Traditional Marriage Views
What are you willing to give up to stand by your religious convictions? That’s a question Jacob Kersey did not anticipate having to ask himself at the age of 19. Kersey was excited to be a new officer with the police department in Port Wentworth, Georgia, a town of about 12,000 people near Savannah. He says everything was going well until the start of the new year. On Jan. 2, Kersey posted a 20-word message on Facebook about his view of marriage. “God designed marriage. Marriage refers to Christ and the church,” he wrote. “That’s why there is no such thing as homosexual marriage.” Kersey’s supervisor asked him to remove the post after someone complained. When Kersey refused, he was placed on paid administrative leave. Kersey was ultimately given a choice by his command staff: Either agree not to post views that could be seen as controversial or face losing his job. Ultimately, Kersey made the choice to resign, explaining that he refuses to abandon his religious convictions. Kersey joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his story and explain why he was willing to sacrifice his job for his faith. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. INTERVIEW | ESG Is ‘Terrifying,’ ‘Problematic’ Concept in Investing. Author and Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy Explains Why.
Conservatives have been sounding the alarm over the use of environmental, social, and governance policies as they relate to investments, particularly for private and public pension funds. But, what exactly is ESG? According to Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-founder of Strive Asset Management, "ESG refers to the use of dollars—including your dollars—to advance environmental or social goals, in addition to what they'll call governance goals, that are not implemented through public policymaking, through elections, or through democracy." Rather, they "are implemented through the economy instead, largely by buying shares in companies and then forcing those companies to behave in a certain way. That's what it is," says Ramaswamy, author of "Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam." Ramaswamy joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the impact of ESG policies, what he hopes to see policy-wise from a Republican-controlled House regarding ESG, and why ESG is such a terrifying and problematic prospect for American investors. INTERVIEW | She Saved Her Daughter From Transgenderism. Mother Erin Friday Explain How.
Erin Friday’s daughter was introduced to gender identity ideology in a comprehensive sex-ed class in seventh grade. “The seed was planted after that class,” Friday says. “And in fact, all of her friends, there were five, sat in my front yard saying what their new labels were.” Friday says she was “alarmed by the language that they were using, including 'pansexual,' which is not a term that 11-year-olds should know.” The mother began looking into what her daughter was learning in school and was struck by the fact that other adults were not also questioning the teaching of gender ideology to middle schoolers. When her daughter said she was "transgender," Friday began taking decisive steps to rescue her from transgenderism. She took her daughter's phone, put her in a new school, and tried her best to surround the preteen with the truth about who she was as a female. It was not easy, but Friday says, as a parent, “you have to be strong enough, your love for your child has to be strong enough, to take their vitriol.” After about a year and a half, Friday’s daughter stopped claiming a transgender identity. Today, through the work of the parental support group Our Duty, Friday is helping other families navigate through gender identity ideology. Friday joins the show today to share her story, and to explain how parents can protect their children from the harms of gender identity ideology. Hosted on Acast. BONUS INTERVIEW | March for Life President Emphasizes States' Role in Pro-Life Movement
One week ago, on Jan. 20, thousands of pro-lifers marched in the nation's capital for the annual March for Life. The march was the first since Roe v. Wade was overturned last June because of the decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. "Well, when Roe v. Wade came down in 1973, what that decision did was legalize abortion in all 50 states, and so the march, of course, began as a response to that," Jeanne Mancini, president of March for Life, says of why the national march is still important despite the life issue being a state issue. "But you fast forward 50 years and the overturn of Roe with the Dobbs decision in June doesn't make abortion illegal throughout all the country, and certainly it doesn't make it unthinkable," Mancini says. Mancini joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the pro-life movement, her message for the marchers in the states, and what she thinks is next for the pro-life movement. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | The Debt Ceiling Debate, Explained
The debt ceiling fight continues in Washington, more than a week after the U.S. hit its legislated debt limit of $31.4 trillion. "The Treasury Department has hit the federal borrowing limit at $31.4 trillion, and they're going to be able to use cash-management techniques to be able to extend what we call the 'X date' of when they're going to ask for the debt limit to actually be raised, somewhere until later in the summer," says Matthew Dickerson, senior adviser on budget policy at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "So, the negotiations are starting between Congress and the White House to figure out what are the spending reforms, what are the pro-growth policies that we're going to implement and pair that with the debt limit increase so that we can put the country on a path to a more prosperous future," he said. Dickerson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the latest on the debt ceiling debate, whether the U.S. has ever defaulted on its debt before, and a bill recently introduced by 43 House Democrats to eliminate the debt limit entirely. INTERVIEW | Bill Donohue Previews New Documentary That Exposes Disney’s Pro-Sexualization, Anti-Nuclear Family Agenda
The magic of Disney is fading, according to the president of the Catholic League. Disney has adopted a woke “idea of diversity, which sounds innocuous on the face of it, [but] is really an agenda to divide people,” Bill Donohue says. “And that's what they're doing. They're dividing people on the basis of family, on the basis of race, on the basis of sex, sexual orientation.” Donohue joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his group's new documentary, "Walt's Disenchanted Kingdom." The film shines a light on how Disney has drifted from its pro-family roots to become a poster child for an agenda that puts radical political ideology before the innocence of children. INTERVIEW | Paul Kamenar on Why Special Counsel Should Expand Probe to Penn Biden Center's China Ties
President Joe Biden has had a difficult time explaining the increasing number of classified information documents that have been found at his home and at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank established in coordination with the University of Pennsylvania. The National Legal and Policy Center, a government watchdog group, first flagged the fact that some $60 million in donations from Chinese-connected entities were donated to the University of Pennsylvania for the Penn Biden Center. The new special counsel named to investigate Biden's alleged mishandling of classified information, Robert Hur, should expand his investigation to include the China connections with the Penn Biden Center, contends National Legal and Policy Center counsel Paul Kamenar told The Daily Signal. The watchdog group has already provided information to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, as well as to the newly established House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, Kamenar said. But watchdog groups and the press can only request information under the Freedom of Information Act, and at best litigate if agencies don't comply. Both a special counsel and a congressional committee can compel cooperation. Kamenar joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the classified documents discovered at the Penn Biden Center and the president's private home in Delaware; the China connection; where Biden's son Hunter fits into all of this; and how the Justice Department, the National Archives and the intelligence community have treated the Biden classified documents case differently than the documents case of former President Donald Trump. INTERVIEW | Timothy Goeglein on Why So Few Americans Can Pass US Citizenship Test
Americans' lack of historical knowledge is crippling the nation, says Timothy Goeglein, a senior official with the Christian group Focus on the Family. In his new book “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story," Goeglein discusses a survey conducted among public high school students that revealed that only 3% could pass a U.S. citizenship test. Those students surveyed are adults today, Goeglein explains, adding, this means many Americans today “are woefully ignorant of not only our history and culture, but our system of government.” Goeglein, who formerly served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush, tracks the lack of knowledge of American history back to the late radical historian Howard Zinn’s influence on American history curriculums. Zinn’s “goal was not to teach facts, but opinions,” he says. Goeglein joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss why teaching American history is so closely linked to the formation of a flourishing society, and what can be done to restore accuracy and integrity to history classrooms across the country. INTERVIEW | Michael Cunningham on Why We Should Care About China's Shrinking Population
For the first time in six decades, the most populous country in the world has a shrinking population. Michael Cunningham, a research fellow in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation, says "this is a crisis that's been decades in the making" and it will likely shock the global economy. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s multimedia news organization.) "Really since at least the 1990s China has known that its population was going to decline," Cunningham says. "For decades it has had this draconian policy, this population control policy. For most of the time, it was people were limited to one child only, and so in many cases, they would fine people if they had more than one child." "In some cases, authorities at the local level would sterilize people, force them to have abortions and so they're controlling it this entire time. For all these years, the population growth rate was really high and then it just plummets," he says. Cunningham continues: And then it has now reached this time where they have negative population growth. We've never had a country then go from negative population growth up to the replacement level, so it is a crisis.China is going to have to deal with it for the foreseeable future. Cunningham joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss more about China's shrinking population, why it will almost certainly impact the global economy, and the Middle Kingdom's battle against COVID-19. Abortion 'Fight Is Far From Over,' Pro-Life Activist Says
Today, Jan. 20, marks the first March for Life in Washington since the Supreme Court overturned its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision last June. The Rev. Dean Nelson, executive director of Human Coalition Action, shares what he thinks is next for the pro-life movement. "I think that the key strategy moving forward is, really, for a unified national rescue system. That is, having pro-life pregnancy centers, having advocacy organizations, national groups, and also having churches, really, to work in a collaborative effort to see states that would defund Planned Parenthood, like they have in Texas, to see other states have stronger pro-life laws that restrict abortion," Nelson says. "But more importantly, that we are together emphasizing and focusing on how we can better serve women who find themselves in these difficult circumstances," he adds. Our research shows, at Human Coalition, that 76% of women who are seeking abortions say that they would choose to parent if their circumstances were different. So, there's a lot of work that we can do collaboratively to help women and rescue children.Nelson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share what he is hoping to see policy-wise in the new 118th Congress relating to the pro-life movement, why it's important for pro-life advocates to keep marching, and Human Coalition Action's mission relating to the pro-life movement. INTERVIEW | Dr. Ingrid Skop on Why FDA Abortion Pill Rule Change Harms Women
The Food and Drug Administration has permanently changed its restrictions on abortion drugs. Following an official rule change in early January, women no longer need to see a doctor in person to be prescribed chemical abortion pills. The move, according to OB-GYN Dr. Ingrid Skop, is opening women up to the “Wild West” of abortion. “With all the removal of the restrictions by the FDA, it is the Wild West,” Skop, a senior fellow and director of medical affairs at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, says. “We know there have already been documented cases of women much further along than 10 weeks who've been provided abortion pills by the boyfriend or the father of the baby who did not want her to be pregnant.” Abortion pills are only authorized to be used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, but Skop says there “have been cases of 31-, 33-week infants being delivered because [the abortion pills will in] many cases not kill the baby, but it'll induce labor because of the misoprostol.” Skop joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why the FDA has approved the mail-order abortions for women and is now allowing pharmacies to fill prescriptions for abortion pills. INTERVIEW | Janice Dean on How She Became ‘the Storm’ Leading to Andrew Cuomo's Demise
Not long into the pandemic in 2020, Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean lost both her mother-in-law and father-in-law to COVID-19. They had been staying in nursing homes in New York. Months later, Dean would discover that it was likely the actions of then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo that led to the deaths of her in-laws. Dean says it was not that Cuomo issued an ignorant order to send the COVID-positive elderly back to nursing homes that troubled her, but rather that Cuomo intentionally tried to cover up the number of deaths that resulted from his actions. Instead of losing herself in grief, Dean made it her mission to expose the truth and hold Cuomo accountable. "I remember when my grief really turned to anger, and that was seeing ... the Cuomo brothers [Andrew and Chris] on CNN, joking around when thousands of people were dying," Dean says, adding, "it was just gross negligence, just unbelievable." In her new book, “I Am the Storm,” Dean tells her story of helping to take down one of the most powerful men in New York. She also shares the stories of more than a dozen other men and women who have turned their hardships into a force for good. Dean joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share how she, and so many others, have turned hardship into purpose. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. BONUS INTERVIEW | Rep. Kevin Hern Stands by Previous Call to Impeach Homeland Security Secretary
The chairman of the House’s biggest Republican caucus says he “stands by” his call for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for allowing hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens to cross the southern border. Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., first advocated that the House impeach Mayorkas in October, and earlier this week Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, filed articles of impeachment against the homeland security secretary. “In October of 2022, I think I was the first to formally call for him to be impeached. I stand by that,” Hern, the new chairman of the Republican Study Committee, says on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “I actually called first for Mayorkas back in February of 2022 to resign,” the Oklahoma Republican says. “And we had a meeting with him with 40 of our Republican members at the Border Caucus meeting at the Capitol. To his credit, he showed up for the meeting [but] was very, very defiant then that there was any problem, when there’d been some two and a half million people had crossed at that time under his watch.” “Secretary Mayorkas has been involved with the border since 2005 as the deputy homeland security director, and other immigration processes over the years from California,” Hern says. “And it is amazing to the American people, based on everything that we have seen, that he still thinks there’s control of the southern border.” Also on this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast,” Hern talks about the 15 ballots to elect a speaker of the House; his goals as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, the largest GOP caucus in the House; and his thoughts on the Pentagon’s lifting its COVID-19 vaccine mandate for members of the armed forces. INTERVIEW | Rep. Jim Banks on Politicization of DOJ: Bidens, Top Dems Play by ‘Different Set of Rules’
Classified documents from Joe Biden’s time as vice president were found Nov. 2, six days before the midterm elections, in Biden’s private office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington. The Biden administration didn’t announce the discovery, which was reported first Monday by CBS News. Biden commented briefly Tuesday, saying he was “surprised to learn that there were any government records that were taken there to that office.” Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney to investigate what happened. “It would be funny if it weren’t so serious, right?” Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., asks during an interview on “The Daily Signal Podcast,” adding: What the Biden administration said about Donald Trump and the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago, and the classified documents [stored there] that they won’t actually tell us what they really were, and then the same thing happens to Joe Biden, his vice presidential records going to the Biden Center, which, by the way, was funded by over $60 million from the Chinese Communist Party. On the podcast, Banks adds: There are two sets of rules in America today: one for anyone named Biden, Obama, or Clinton, and then a different set of rules for the rest of us. And so, because of that two sets of rules and the lack of impartiality by the Biden administration, their DOJ, that’s what we should be investigating.Banks also discusses the four-day fight over choosing a speaker of the House, what he hopes Republicans will focus on in the 118th Congress, and whether he will spearhead any investigations. INTERVIEW | Kris Vallotton on Devastating 'Pandemic of Fatherlessness' in America
America is suffering from a pandemic that is not a virus, it “is a pandemic of fatherlessness.” That’s according to Pastor Kris Vallotton, author of the new book, “Up Rising: The Epic Battle for the Most Fatherless Generation in History.” “Fifty-one percent of all children in America right now are born out of wedlock, 51%,” Vallotton, the senior associate leader of Bethel Church in Redding, California, says. “In 1950, 4% of Americans were born out of wedlock.” The results of children growing up without fathers in the home are devastating, Vallotton says, with data revealing that “75% of all inmates grew up without a father,” and “63% of all youth suicides come from fatherless homes.” Vallotton also points to a rise in transgenderism and gay marriage as a side effect of fatherlessness, because “when we embrace gay marriage… what we said is that you can have two mommies and two daddies, because mommies and daddies are interchangeable.” Vallotton joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his own personal story of losing his father as a young boy and how that affected his life, and to offer a hopeful solution for how children can experience the love of a father amid a fatherless generation. Why What's Happening on Capitol Hill Is 'a Healthy Process'
The speaker of the House has yet to be chosen after three days and eleven rounds of voting. So, how long can this go on? "That's a great question, and I think one that many in Washington, D.C., are contemplating, us, people on the Hill, staff members of members themselves. But the short answer is it can go on for as long as it takes," Ryan Walker, vice president of government relations for Heritage Action, the grassroots arm of The Heritage Foundation, says. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) "Now, we don't have much history or immediate history with this process because the last time that this happened was nearly 100 years ago, so it's relatively new, but I think this is how the system was designed," Walker says. Walker joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the speaker of the House race, his thoughts on Rep. Matt Gaetz voting for former President Donald Trump in the seventh round of voting on Thursday, and whether or not you have to be a member of Congress to run for the speaker position. 'It's Really Like Poison,' Former Drug Enforcement Agent Says of Fentanyl
Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin. How strong is that? It's so strong that it only takes 2 milligrams—the equivalent of four grains of salt—to kill you, according to a former federal drug enforcement agent. Put another way, he says, 1 gram of fentanyl could potentially kill 500 people. "We got to make sure we understand that there's obviously illicit fentanyl, which is what we're seeing all over America now. But the legal fentanyl that's made is a very powerful opioid, a synthetic opioid that is made to help people with pain," says Derek Maltz, a retired special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration. "And like I said, it's used in [intravenous] drips for cancer patients and people with severe back pain. And that's the stuff that is prescribed by doctors in hospitals." "But the synthetic opioid fentanyl that we're talking about now, in my opinion, is really not a drug. We're calling it fentanyl, but it's really like poison, because it's made in dirty, filthy labs in Mexico," he says. Maltz joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss when he first encountered fentanyl, who the victims of fentanyl are, and what the path forward for the U.S. is in fighting it. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Ryan Walker on Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s Battle for House Speaker and What to Expect From 118th Congress
Congress is back in session, and members have their work cut out for them. “I agree that it is one of—if not the most critical time in our nation's history,” says Ryan Walker, vice president for government relations at Heritage Action for America. (Heritage Action for America is the grassroots partner organization of The Heritage Foundation.) “We are at the precipice of continuing the Left's march toward socialism, a full and fundamental takeover of our public institutions, not just government, but education, business, university systems, you name it,” he says. With Republicans controlling the House, Walker says, the House Oversight and Reform Committee has a responsibility to hold the Biden administration accountable and to investigate the crisis at the southern border, COVID-19 spending, and much more. INTERVIEW | Dr. Ben Carson Diagnoses America’s Greatest Ailment as ‘Loss of Vision’
With the start of a new year, Dr. Ben Carson says he is concerned that America has lost its vision. Americans have lost “vision of what education is there for,” says Carson, the former secretary of Housing and Urban Development and renowned neurosurgeon. “Education is there to teach you how to function successfully in a complex society,” he says, “and when you lose sight of that, then you start saying, ‘Oh, we've got to concentrate on what kind of pronoun you use, and whether you're really a girl or a boy, and are you a victim?’” With the start of the new Congress, Carson says, politicians need to prioritize not only education, but the economy, election integrity, lessening America's dependence on China, and holding Big Tech accountable. “If we can put a man on the moon, we can certainly come up with a mechanism that we have open, fair elections that are transparent, that are quick, that we have Election Day, not election season,” he says. Best of 2022: Matt Walsh on "What Is a Woman?"
This week, we are looking back at our, and your, favorite episodes from 2022. What is a woman? Seems like a pretty simple question. But in today’s America, the left thinks females aren’t the only ones who count as women anymore. Stories abound of biological males not only invading women’s private spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms, but dominating in women’s sports. All of this comes with the support of radical leftists and activists in medicine. Worse, those medical doctors aren’t just focused on treating adults. Transgender ideologues have targeted children. Matt Walsh, author, podcast host, and filmmaker with The Daily Wire, has released a documentary film titled “What Is a Woman?” that he hopes will expose the worst aspects of gender ideology. “You feel like you’re staring into the pit of hell, honestly. I mean, you’re looking at pure evil when you consider what they’re doing to these kids, and they know what they’re doing,” Walsh says. “They have to know what they’re doing, because they’re the doctors and they know what it entails. They know that this stuff is obviously irreversible and they also know that kids can’t actually consent to any of this stuff.” Walsh adds: Kids don’t know what they’re doing. They’re not looking five, 10 years into the future. I mean, even before you get to surgery and that’s horrific enough, you’ve got the drugs, the hormone drugs, the so-called puberty blockers, and those drugs among other consequences, they also have the effect of sterilizing kids. Walsh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss his film and what gender activists are doing to kids, and offer solutions on how to escape this post-truth environment. Enjoy the show!
