INTERVIEW | New Axis of Evil Rising on First Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine?
Friday, Feb. 24, marks one year since Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives. Ahead of the one-year anniversary, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Wednesday with China's top diplomat, Wang Yi. Dakota Wood, a senior research fellow in defense programs at The Heritage Foundation's Center for National Defense, says the visit wasn't that "out of the ordinary, in terms of the relations that exist between various powers." (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) However, "the unusual part would be this very overt effort between China, [the] Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, to work more closely and overtly, very explicitly with Vladimir Putin, Moscow, Russia as a whole," Wood says. "So, is it an alliance? I don't know that. ... It's an alliance in practice, as opposed to some kind of a formal alliance that we saw in World War I, World War II amongst Axis powers." Wood adds: So, from the perspective of Moscow and Beijing, isn't it better to join forces in a sense such that together, operating in our own spheres, it causes more problems for the United States, who is increasingly unable to address two major competitors at the same time, keeping us off balance, dividing attention, and really putting a stressor on the resources we have available. Wood joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss reporting that the U.S. is increasing its troop presence in Taiwan, lessons from the war in Ukraine, and the potential for China to supply Russia with weaponry. INTERVIEW | 'Why We Have to Win This War' Against the 'Woke Army,' According to Asra Nomani
Asra Nomani, author of "Woke Army: The Red-Green Alliance That Is Destroying America’s Freedom" and co-founder of Save Merit, is emphasizing the necessity of "winning this war against the woke army." "It is not an exaggeration to say that the future of America depends on our winning this war against the woke army ... I wouldn't say that lightly except behind me, your listeners and you can't see it, but behind me, stacks of books in which I've been fighting this extremism within my Muslim community that is a national security threat. Right? We know this," Nomani says. "And then after that, I organized my books chronologically. That’s the OCD in me—’70s, ’80s, ’90s, filled with those books. And then I have my books on critical race theory and all this oppression studies and grievance studies, and then the indoctrination books for the kids," Nomani adds. "'Woke Baby,' 'A is for Activist,' 'ABCs' that have now become 'GayBCs.' Right? Indoctrination on every level of a child's identity. Nomani continues: And why do I know how serious this is? Because in that first part of my life as a warrior against extremism within my Muslim community, I know you've heard the term of madrasas, right? It's the term for those schools in which the jihadis would indoctrinate children. It's the public school system in nations like Pakistan and Afghanistan, and they would indoctrinate children from a young age.Where have we heard that again? The Cultural Revolution, of course. Entire nations' destinies have been defined by what we teach children, and that is exactly what it is at stake here, and that's why we have to win this war.Nomani joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the "war on merit," the potential short-term and long-term consequences of the war on merit, and her advice for any parents who want to get more involved with what is happening at their child's school. INTERVIEW | Supreme Court Hears Two Cases That Could Change Social Media Platforms Significantly
Social media companies might have to make significant changes to their platforms, depending on the outcomes of two Supreme Court cases. This week, the justices hear arguments in two cases that involve a federal law referred to as Section 230, which protects social media platforms from being held liable for the content users post. The high court heard arguments in Gonzalez v. Google LLC on Tuesday and will hear Twitter Inc. v. Taamneh on Wednesday. The rulings in these cases, expected sometime this summer, could affect how social media platforms operate. Under Section 230, platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are shielded from standards that, for example, newspapers are held to. While a news outlet can be sued for knowingly publishing false information, the same strict standards don’t apply to social media sites, due to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. But some argue that tech platforms should be held accountable for false or dangerous information shared on the platforms. The two cases being brought before the Supreme Court this week "should be a very interesting debate, and it may not be one that divides cleanly along ideological lines, like we typically think of them, between the conservative and more liberal justices," says Zack Smith, manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in The Heritage Foundation's Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Smith, who is also co-host of the "SCOTUS 101" podcast, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how social media platforms could be affected by the cases being argued at the Supreme Court this week. INTERVIEW | How the Woke Agenda Unleashed Havoc in the Classroom, Teacher Daniel Buck Explains
Children are always going to misbehave, teacher Daniel Buck says, and that’s why discipline is needed in the classroom. "I think the idea that we're going to solve misbehavior is kind of Utopian," Buck says, adding that is "what the progressive idea is." "If we just get the system right, then kids are going to behave. And that's never going to happen," he says. Instead, Buck advocates for a strong disciplinary "system in place that anticipates and responds to misbehavior." The lack of such discipline in the classroom is leading some teachers to resign and harming students' ability to learn, says Buck, the author of “What Is Wrong With Our Schools?: The Ideology Impoverishing Education in America and How We Can Do Better for Our Students." The book was published in December. Buck joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how the agenda of the woke Left has led to a lack of discipline in American classrooms, and why a restoration of discipline would improve learning outcomes for students. INTERVIEW | Victoria Coates on Putin’s Spring Offensive, Russian ‘Reeducation’ Camps, and What’s Next for War in Ukraine
Next Friday will mark one year since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a war against Ukraine, a war that many anticipated would end in a matter of days after the invasion. Yet, Ukraine, with the support of America and its European allies, has succeeded in significantly weakening Russia and preventing its victory. For Putin, the current military campaign in Ukraine is "one of greatly reduced expectations," Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation, says. "He has gone from wanting to capture the entire country to just trying to capture some small chunks of eastern Ukraine, so that is in and of itself something of a victory, for a starter." Although U.S. support for Ukraine is necessary, Coates says, the Biden administration owes it to the Americans to ensure that the billions of dollars in aid sent to Ukraine is being used as intended, and that a plan exists for how the U.S. will provide assistance moving forward. Coates joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the situation on the ground in Ukraine, how long the war that began last Feb. 24 likely will go on, and reports of Russia's stealing Ukrainian children and placing them in “reeducation camps.” Enjoy the show. INTERVIEW | America's Outpost in Washington Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary
The Heritage Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary Thursday, and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts is reflecting on the leading conservative think tank's success over the past five decades. "There are a lot of ways I would put that, but I think most succinctly it would be [that] Heritage has always been willing without fail to state the truth, even in those times when stating the truth comes with some risk," Roberts says on today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast." "In other words, ... often stating the truth about fiscal restraint or the lack thereof, stating the truth about America's social and cultural weakness, stating the truth about violating federalism," he says. Roberts became president of The Heritage Foundation in October 2021 after serving for five years as president and CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation in Austin, Texas. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.) Roberts joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss Heritage's success since its founding in 1973, what he hopes to see the think tank accomplish over the next five decades, and how he, as Heritage president, is working to build the think tank's role in the conservative movement as America's outpost in Washington. INTERVIEW | Mom Suparna Dutta on Being Booted From Education Board, Called ‘White Supremacist’ After Defending Constitution
Suparna Dutta says she thought the exceptional nature of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence “was common sense,” but her recent experience with the Virginia Board of Education proved otherwise. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin appointed Dutta—a mother, engineer, and Indian immigrant—to the Virginia Board of Education in July. “I was thrilled and very honored to be appointed by him as a voice of parent advocacy to the board,” Dutta says. But the Virginia state Senate blocked Dutta’s appointment to the board just one week after she defended the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and criticized socialism and communism during a board meeting. She was even accused of being "aligned with white supremacists" for her views on America's founding documents. The Privileges and Elections Committee of the state Senate originally voted to confirm Dutta to the Virginia Board of Education, but after she defended the founding documents, Democratic state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi introduced an amendment to remove Dutta from the board. “I do believe that the founding of this nation was something remarkable,” Dutta says, adding that “the documents that were drawn up, starting with the Declaration of Independence and then the Constitution, first and foremost, put the unalienable rights and our individual freedom first and foremost.” Dutta joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share her story of being kept off the Virginia Board of Education, and to explain the ways in which woke ideology has influenced school boards and education across the country. INTERVIEW | Defense Expert Provides Chilling Insight Into US-China Relations
More than three decades ago, the U.S. faced the threat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Now, the U.S. might be facing a situation with China that could be more dangerous than at any moment in the Cold War, in the wake of the shooting down Feb. 4 of a Chinese spy balloon after it flew over U.S. territory. “Well, one of the more concerning reports out of this whole thing is the fact that the Pentagon rang up their buddies over in China, a hotline, and said, ‘We’re concerned about this thing, whatever it is,’ and nobody on the Chinese side answered the phone,” Dakota Wood, senior research fellow in defense programs in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, says on today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “So, even during the heights of the Cold War, our U.S. Pentagon and their counterparts in the Soviet Union would at least keep these communication lines open. We’ve got communication lines with Russia as it continues to be involved in the war in Syria,” Wood says. “So, the ability to talk to each other really helps to mitigate the risk of misinterpreting something or a road to war or something along those lines.” Wood joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Chinese spy balloon, whether we are seeing heightened aggression from China, and how the downed spy balloon compares with the three other downed aerial objects since. INTERVIEW | How Ancient Wisdom Can Help Us Tackle Today's Crises
What can ancient wisdom teach us about today's crises? According to Spencer Klavan, author of "How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises," it can teach us a lot. "Whenever you call a book something like 'How to Save the West,' you have a certain imposter syndrome, or it's impossible not to feel a kind of trepidation, but that's actually why I wrote the book in a certain sense, that feeling of just overwhelm and despair that I think we all can relate to," Klavan, associate editor at the Claremont Institute, says on today's podcast. Klavan adds: What's the role of a human being? What's our place in the universe? What is good and what is evil? Those sorts of questions actually are human-sized.And so I wanted to give people just a taste of some of the wisdom that we can get if we access these great texts and incorporate their wisdom into our lives, because we think of these things as kind of inaccessible or beyond us, but actually they're there for you, and the book is designed to equip you with some of that. Klavan joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his new book, what he thinks the West needs to be saved from, and what he views as the biggest threat to the West. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott Explains How Cartels Control Southern Border
Whether it's a family or a single male, the drug cartels play a role in every illegal crossing into the U.S. at the southern border, former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott says. “They're either directly paying the cartels or the cartels are controlling their movements for another benefit, meaning to systematically overwhelm Border Patrol, create a gap in the border security, and then bring the narcotics across,” Scott says. Scott, who worked in U.S. Customs and Border Protection for three decades, served as the 24th chief of the Border Patrol from Jan. 24, 2020, until Aug. 14, 2021. Through his decades of work on the border, Scott says, he observed that “every single day, almost without exception until January of 2021 [when President Joe Biden took office], the border was getting more and more secure.” The cartels are taking advantage of the Biden administration’s border policies, Scott says, explaining that because most illegal aliens coming across the border are released into the U.S. interior, the cartels “push [asylum-seekers] all across at the same time.” The result, he says, is that “it overwhelms all the law enforcement resources so that [the cartels] can push a second wave through, commonly referred to nowadays as 'gotaways.'" The gotaways tend to be individuals who are "willing to pay more to not encounter a law enforcement officer,” Scott says, adding, “That's where most of the narcotics [are]. That's where most of the criminal aliens are.” Scott joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the long-term implications of Biden’s border policies and why Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is allowing the crisis to continue at the southern border. INTERVIEW | Former Acting Defense Secretary Doesn’t Think China Would Have Flown Balloon Under Trump
U.S. officials revealed a week ago, on Feb. 2, that a Chinese surveillance balloon was flying over the country. Two days later, on Feb. 4, an American fighter jet shot down the spy balloon with a missile. Chris Miller, acting defense secretary under President Donald Trump, weighs in on the Biden administration’s decision to shoot down China’s balloon and whether he would have handled the situation differently. “That goes back to when was it identified and when did our sensors pick up that,” Miller says of the spy balloon on “The Daily Signal Podcast,” adding: “I was a bad map reader, and people that worked with me in the military will attest to that. But I did look at the track of the balloon, and when it came over the Aleutian Islands [off Alaska], there was a lot of blue space.” “There was a lot of doggone ocean where something could have been done,” he says. “I’ve heard that whole [Biden administration] justification: ‘Well, we didn’t want to knock it down because it would’ve fallen on somebody. Could have injured somebody or killed somebody.’ I mean, that’s a valid request.” Miller adds: Let me give you this one, Samantha: You spent a trillion dollars, $850 billion, [on] defense and we did not have the capability to take control of that doggone balloon and bring it down on our own terms without having to send up a hundred-million-dollar fighter aircraft to shoot a $400,000 Sidewinder missile? On the podcast, Miller discusses some of Biden’s comments on China during his State of the Union address Tuesday night, his thoughts on how the Biden administration responded to the Chinese spy balloon, and his new book “Soldier Secretary: Warnings from the Battlefield and the Pentagon About America’s Most Dangerous Enemies.” Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Here's What Grade Rep. Elise Stefanik Gives Biden After 2 Years as President
President Joe Biden on Tuesday night will deliver his second official State of the Union address since being sworn into office Jan. 20, 2021. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., the No. 3 House Republican, says the president doesn't have anything to brag about in the speech to a joint session of Congress at the midpoint of his four-year term. "I think the president has caused significant crises in this country, whether you look at the border crisis, the economic crisis, the inflation crisis, or the constitutional crisis," Stefanik, chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, says. "What House Republicans are focused on is our commitment to America, our legislative agenda that we have already hit the ground running to pass on behalf of the American people, standing up for an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future that's built upon freedom, and a government that's accountable," Stefanik says. "So, I hope to hear a lot from the president, but I think he's going to double down on the far-Left, failed policies that have been really hurting hardworking American families." INTERVIEW | Dr. Aaron Kheriaty on How Governments Abuse Public Health Crises Like COVID-19 to Gain Power
Many COVID-19 restrictions and mandates have been rolled back, but the infrastructure remains in place, “ready and waiting for the next declared public health crisis,” Dr. Aaron Kheriaty says. Kheriaty, a psychiatrist who directs the Bioethics and American Democracy program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, chose to speak out against the COVID-19 vaccine mandates, That decision cost him his job at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Kheriaty says he is concerned that the "pretext of public health and safety has proven to be a good fulcrum, a good lever to get people to do things that otherwise they would be very reluctant to do." "It's also been an occasion for the accumulation of power, mostly by the executive branch of government," he says. In his new book "The New Abnormal: The Rise of the Biomedical Security State,” Kheriaty details the ways in which governments past and present have used public health crises to gain power. Kheriaty joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how, unless placed in check, the government will use public health orders to further its own agenda, whether about COVID-19, climate change, or abortion. INTERVIEW | Preston Brashers on Why Your Tax Refund Could Be Smaller This Year
It's that time of the year once again, tax season. While the process of filing taxes is often arduous, the hope of a sizable tax refund removes a little pain from the ordeal. But, with an economy like the one we have right now, Preston Brashers, a Heritage Foundation senior policy analyst for the federal budget, says it's possible some Americans are going to see smaller refunds this year. While there are a number of factors contributing to the likely smaller refunds, Brashers says "the big one that that's maybe being left out of this whole conversation is inflation." Brashers points out that the "IRS does do an inflation adjustment," but the "issue is they do that inflation adjustment in the fall of the prior year. So I think most of the most people can recognize things are a little bit more expensive now than they were in say, September, October of 2021. And so you're effectively being taxed like you're maybe 8% richer than you actually are because the value of the dollar, essentially your purchasing power, has gone down." Brashers joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain all the reason why Americans could be getting less back from the IRS this year, and to discuss what Congress and the White House should do to lower inflation. INTERVIEW | Former CIA Analyst Stella Morabito on How Anthony Fauci Symbolizes 'Weaponization of Loneliness'
Tyrants gain control through weaponizing the fear of loneliness, author and former CIA analyst Stella Morabito says. In America, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the omnipresent voice of the COVID-19 pandemic, is one example of this, she says. “I believe that he symbolizes for our era the weaponization of loneliness,” Morabito, a senior contributor at The Federalist, says of Fauci. “When you think about what all these COVID mandates did to our society: the lockdowns, the devastation in human relationships, the way that it created hostilities, even among family members." “When COVID hit, our loneliness, our isolation [grew], especially for people [who] lived alone, being put under house arrest ... for at least months, and some people afraid to come out," she says. "I mean, this was the enforcement of our isolation—literal, blatant enforcement. And I think Fauci symbolizes all of that. More than symbolizes it, I mean, he directed so much of it.” In her new book “The Weaponization of Loneliness: How Tyrants Stoke Our Fear of Isolation to Silence, Divide, and Conquer,” Morabito, who has a master's degree in Russian and Soviet history, explains how the powerful use the fear of loneliness as a tool to gain and maintain authority. Morabito joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how her previous work at the CIA, which focused on studying propaganda, led her to write the book, and how Americans can reject tyranny. INTERVIEW | Police Officer Jacob Kersey Explains Why He Resigned After Backlash on Traditional Marriage Views
What are you willing to give up to stand by your religious convictions? That’s a question Jacob Kersey did not anticipate having to ask himself at the age of 19. Kersey was excited to be a new officer with the police department in Port Wentworth, Georgia, a town of about 12,000 people near Savannah. He says everything was going well until the start of the new year. On Jan. 2, Kersey posted a 20-word message on Facebook about his view of marriage. “God designed marriage. Marriage refers to Christ and the church,” he wrote. “That’s why there is no such thing as homosexual marriage.” Kersey’s supervisor asked him to remove the post after someone complained. When Kersey refused, he was placed on paid administrative leave. Kersey was ultimately given a choice by his command staff: Either agree not to post views that could be seen as controversial or face losing his job. Ultimately, Kersey made the choice to resign, explaining that he refuses to abandon his religious convictions. Kersey joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his story and explain why he was willing to sacrifice his job for his faith. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. INTERVIEW | ESG Is ‘Terrifying,’ ‘Problematic’ Concept in Investing. Author and Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy Explains Why.
Conservatives have been sounding the alarm over the use of environmental, social, and governance policies as they relate to investments, particularly for private and public pension funds. But, what exactly is ESG? According to Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-founder of Strive Asset Management, "ESG refers to the use of dollars—including your dollars—to advance environmental or social goals, in addition to what they'll call governance goals, that are not implemented through public policymaking, through elections, or through democracy." Rather, they "are implemented through the economy instead, largely by buying shares in companies and then forcing those companies to behave in a certain way. That's what it is," says Ramaswamy, author of "Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam." Ramaswamy joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the impact of ESG policies, what he hopes to see policy-wise from a Republican-controlled House regarding ESG, and why ESG is such a terrifying and problematic prospect for American investors. INTERVIEW | She Saved Her Daughter From Transgenderism. Mother Erin Friday Explain How.
Erin Friday’s daughter was introduced to gender identity ideology in a comprehensive sex-ed class in seventh grade. “The seed was planted after that class,” Friday says. “And in fact, all of her friends, there were five, sat in my front yard saying what their new labels were.” Friday says she was “alarmed by the language that they were using, including 'pansexual,' which is not a term that 11-year-olds should know.” The mother began looking into what her daughter was learning in school and was struck by the fact that other adults were not also questioning the teaching of gender ideology to middle schoolers. When her daughter said she was "transgender," Friday began taking decisive steps to rescue her from transgenderism. She took her daughter's phone, put her in a new school, and tried her best to surround the preteen with the truth about who she was as a female. It was not easy, but Friday says, as a parent, “you have to be strong enough, your love for your child has to be strong enough, to take their vitriol.” After about a year and a half, Friday’s daughter stopped claiming a transgender identity. Today, through the work of the parental support group Our Duty, Friday is helping other families navigate through gender identity ideology. Friday joins the show today to share her story, and to explain how parents can protect their children from the harms of gender identity ideology. Hosted on Acast. BONUS INTERVIEW | March for Life President Emphasizes States' Role in Pro-Life Movement
One week ago, on Jan. 20, thousands of pro-lifers marched in the nation's capital for the annual March for Life. The march was the first since Roe v. Wade was overturned last June because of the decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. "Well, when Roe v. Wade came down in 1973, what that decision did was legalize abortion in all 50 states, and so the march, of course, began as a response to that," Jeanne Mancini, president of March for Life, says of why the national march is still important despite the life issue being a state issue. "But you fast forward 50 years and the overturn of Roe with the Dobbs decision in June doesn't make abortion illegal throughout all the country, and certainly it doesn't make it unthinkable," Mancini says. Mancini joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the pro-life movement, her message for the marchers in the states, and what she thinks is next for the pro-life movement. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | The Debt Ceiling Debate, Explained
The debt ceiling fight continues in Washington, more than a week after the U.S. hit its legislated debt limit of $31.4 trillion. "The Treasury Department has hit the federal borrowing limit at $31.4 trillion, and they're going to be able to use cash-management techniques to be able to extend what we call the 'X date' of when they're going to ask for the debt limit to actually be raised, somewhere until later in the summer," says Matthew Dickerson, senior adviser on budget policy at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "So, the negotiations are starting between Congress and the White House to figure out what are the spending reforms, what are the pro-growth policies that we're going to implement and pair that with the debt limit increase so that we can put the country on a path to a more prosperous future," he said. Dickerson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the latest on the debt ceiling debate, whether the U.S. has ever defaulted on its debt before, and a bill recently introduced by 43 House Democrats to eliminate the debt limit entirely. INTERVIEW | Bill Donohue Previews New Documentary That Exposes Disney’s Pro-Sexualization, Anti-Nuclear Family Agenda
The magic of Disney is fading, according to the president of the Catholic League. Disney has adopted a woke “idea of diversity, which sounds innocuous on the face of it, [but] is really an agenda to divide people,” Bill Donohue says. “And that's what they're doing. They're dividing people on the basis of family, on the basis of race, on the basis of sex, sexual orientation.” Donohue joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his group's new documentary, "Walt's Disenchanted Kingdom." The film shines a light on how Disney has drifted from its pro-family roots to become a poster child for an agenda that puts radical political ideology before the innocence of children. INTERVIEW | Paul Kamenar on Why Special Counsel Should Expand Probe to Penn Biden Center's China Ties
President Joe Biden has had a difficult time explaining the increasing number of classified information documents that have been found at his home and at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank established in coordination with the University of Pennsylvania. The National Legal and Policy Center, a government watchdog group, first flagged the fact that some $60 million in donations from Chinese-connected entities were donated to the University of Pennsylvania for the Penn Biden Center. The new special counsel named to investigate Biden's alleged mishandling of classified information, Robert Hur, should expand his investigation to include the China connections with the Penn Biden Center, contends National Legal and Policy Center counsel Paul Kamenar told The Daily Signal. The watchdog group has already provided information to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, as well as to the newly established House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, Kamenar said. But watchdog groups and the press can only request information under the Freedom of Information Act, and at best litigate if agencies don't comply. Both a special counsel and a congressional committee can compel cooperation. Kamenar joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the classified documents discovered at the Penn Biden Center and the president's private home in Delaware; the China connection; where Biden's son Hunter fits into all of this; and how the Justice Department, the National Archives and the intelligence community have treated the Biden classified documents case differently than the documents case of former President Donald Trump. INTERVIEW | Timothy Goeglein on Why So Few Americans Can Pass US Citizenship Test
Americans' lack of historical knowledge is crippling the nation, says Timothy Goeglein, a senior official with the Christian group Focus on the Family. In his new book “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story," Goeglein discusses a survey conducted among public high school students that revealed that only 3% could pass a U.S. citizenship test. Those students surveyed are adults today, Goeglein explains, adding, this means many Americans today “are woefully ignorant of not only our history and culture, but our system of government.” Goeglein, who formerly served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush, tracks the lack of knowledge of American history back to the late radical historian Howard Zinn’s influence on American history curriculums. Zinn’s “goal was not to teach facts, but opinions,” he says. Goeglein joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss why teaching American history is so closely linked to the formation of a flourishing society, and what can be done to restore accuracy and integrity to history classrooms across the country. INTERVIEW | Michael Cunningham on Why We Should Care About China's Shrinking Population
For the first time in six decades, the most populous country in the world has a shrinking population. Michael Cunningham, a research fellow in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation, says "this is a crisis that's been decades in the making" and it will likely shock the global economy. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s multimedia news organization.) "Really since at least the 1990s China has known that its population was going to decline," Cunningham says. "For decades it has had this draconian policy, this population control policy. For most of the time, it was people were limited to one child only, and so in many cases, they would fine people if they had more than one child." "In some cases, authorities at the local level would sterilize people, force them to have abortions and so they're controlling it this entire time. For all these years, the population growth rate was really high and then it just plummets," he says. Cunningham continues: And then it has now reached this time where they have negative population growth. We've never had a country then go from negative population growth up to the replacement level, so it is a crisis.China is going to have to deal with it for the foreseeable future. Cunningham joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss more about China's shrinking population, why it will almost certainly impact the global economy, and the Middle Kingdom's battle against COVID-19. Abortion 'Fight Is Far From Over,' Pro-Life Activist Says
Today, Jan. 20, marks the first March for Life in Washington since the Supreme Court overturned its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision last June. The Rev. Dean Nelson, executive director of Human Coalition Action, shares what he thinks is next for the pro-life movement. "I think that the key strategy moving forward is, really, for a unified national rescue system. That is, having pro-life pregnancy centers, having advocacy organizations, national groups, and also having churches, really, to work in a collaborative effort to see states that would defund Planned Parenthood, like they have in Texas, to see other states have stronger pro-life laws that restrict abortion," Nelson says. "But more importantly, that we are together emphasizing and focusing on how we can better serve women who find themselves in these difficult circumstances," he adds. Our research shows, at Human Coalition, that 76% of women who are seeking abortions say that they would choose to parent if their circumstances were different. So, there's a lot of work that we can do collaboratively to help women and rescue children.Nelson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share what he is hoping to see policy-wise in the new 118th Congress relating to the pro-life movement, why it's important for pro-life advocates to keep marching, and Human Coalition Action's mission relating to the pro-life movement.
