INTERVIEW | Patty-Jane Geller on Russia and Threat of Nuclear War
Russia has threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. How serious are those threats? Is the United States prepared to respond in the face of a nuclear attack? And what role do China and North Korea play in the discussion of nuclear war? “We've been hearing threat after threat, nuclear threat after nuclear threat against Ukraine,” Patty-Jane Geller, a Heritage Foundation senior policy analyst in nuclear deterrence and missile defense, says. “Is the threat likely? Probably not. I don't see how using a nuclear weapon against Ukraine would really help [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and help his war aims. The Ukrainians aren't going to surrender. But that doesn't mean that the chances that he'll use a nuclear weapon are zero, either," she says. Geller joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the true threat of Russia’s nuclear arsenal, and why North Korea is testing its missile capabilities. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Rancher Lauren Allen on Realities of Living on Southern Border
For Laura Allen and her family, illegal aliens crossing through their ranch is one of the “unique aspects” of living on the border, she said. The illegal aliens who cross through her ranch are “criminals, they've got criminal histories, they're not good people, and they are to be feared,” said Allen, who is not related to this reporter. The Allen ranch, located about 170 miles west of San Antonio in Val Verde County, has been in the family for over 100 years. “It was bought in 1920 by [my husband’s] great-grandfather and the family has been actively ranching it all that time,” Allen, 54, said. Allen, the former judge of Val Verde County, says that over the years, her husband's family has watched the situation with illegal immigration change. “Years ago, when my mother-in-law and my father-in-law built their home out here, which was in the ’50s, it was not uncommon for [illegal aliens] to come up to the house and be looking for work or looking for a meal or something like that,” Allen said. “Generally, they didn't have issues. They didn't have problems with anybody.” “Nowadays, the people that we see crossing, they don't want to come anywhere near us. They don't want to be seen, they don't want to be detected. We catch them on game cameras with big, huge backpacks that you could almost carry a person in, which we're sure are drugs,” she said, adding: “They come through in the cover of darkness and they want to get out undetected.” Allen joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain the realities of life on the southern border. INTERVIEW | Gentry Collins of American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce
American corporations are increasingly taking sides on political issues—and it seems they’re often embracing socialist ideas rather than the free market. That’s led former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and others to create the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce. The group launched earlier this year to put the focus back on pro-business policies and limited government—rather than woke ideas pushed by activists on the left. Gentry Collins, CEO of the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, comes to the job after serving as the national political director at both the Republican Governors Association and the Republican National Committee. INTERVIEW | Janine Marrone on Psychological Effects of Medication Abortions on Women
More than half of all abortions are medication, rather than surgical, abortions, according to research by the nonprofit group Support After Abortion. Medication abortions are performed with pills that women usually take at home. According to a new study by Support After Abortion, a Florida-based organization that provides post-abortion resources to women across America and the world, many women who have medication abortions struggle with their decision weeks—or even years—later. The suffering of abortion goes “beyond the physical suffering,” Janine Marrone, the group's founder, says, adding that many women experience “grief, regret, shame, [and] remorse” after having an abortion. INTERVIEW | CHANGED Movement on How Childhood Experiences Can Shape Gender Identity
Children now are inundated from a young age with messages about sexuality and gender, the founders of the CHANGED Movement say, but those messages aren't always positive. "What [society is] doing is not allowing children to really explore their sexuality before labeling them as LGBT or Q or anything else, and suggesting that at 7 or 8 you could know precisely something about your identity that really takes years to develop and understand," Elizabeth Woning, co-founder of the CHANGED Movement says. The CHANGED Movement, founded by Woning and Ken Williams, is a Christian organization based in California that works with people who are seeking to leave a homosexual lifestyle or who are struggling with gender identity or same-sex attraction. Woning and Williams recently released a new booklet called “Self-Discovery: How Childhood Shaped Our Sexual Identity.” The resource is intended to help the church, and society as a whole, understand how gender identity is often influenced by childhood experiences and beliefs. "In this booklet, what I sought to do was call into question why we're trying to push children into this LGBT identity, and then disclose or clarify what it looks like to rediscover your childhood so that you realize you weren't just born this way," Woning says. Woning and Williams join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to talk about their work, and how to help those struggling with gender identity. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Nate Hochman on National Conservatism
Conservatism has existed as a philosophy since the founding of the Republic. As the country has evolved and grown, so too has the political ideology that has guided America through its toughest trials. Conservatism again stands at a possible point of evolution. Much has been said about national conservatism, both for and against. Nate Hochman, a staff writer at National Review, says that national conservatism is both the future of the movement, and its past. “You can point to any number of issues, whether it’s a more sort of assertive social conservatism, immigration restriction, a sort of rethinking of conservatism’s relationship to big business, a kind of two cheers for capitalism approach to free markets,” he says. “All of those things have been aspects of conservatism since the modern American conservative movement was founded.” Hochman joins the show to discuss what national conservatism is, and why he feels it represents the future of the movement. INTERVIEW | Sumantra Maitra on Legacy of Queen Elizabeth II
The death of Queen Elizabeth II marked the passing of an era in British and world history. Elizabeth II, who first became queen when Winston Churchill was prime minister in 1952, carried the British monarchy through the turbulent twentieth and early twenty-first centuries until her death on Sept. 8. Not only that, Elizabeth II provided a critical link to the past with dignity and grace that was respected and admired, even by many outside the U.K. She provided the best example of what an “elite” can be. “A lot of elite in other societies, they are elites, when they dictate the polity of a country, but they don't really actively take part,” said Sumantra Maitra, a national security fellow at the Center for the National Interest and associate fellow at the Royal Historical Society in the U.K. “But the royals have to serve. The queen served in the Second World War. All her sons, our current king, essentially, he served as well in the Navy. William and Harry, they served.” It is notable that while so many pay their respects to Elizabeth II, there is a general trend in the West to reject its own history, its own traditions in the name of purifying the past. False narratives based on faulty history are now used to diminish what many in America, the U.K., and the West once paid tribute to in their history. Ultimately, Maitra said, this “breaks the love for the future generations to come and feel anything traditional or anything that's connected to their own past.” Maitra joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the war on history, and more. INTERVIEW | Amber Athey on Canceling the Left
The radical left wields immense cultural power in America. When a conservative crosses them, intentionally or otherwise, they are met with a volley of vile leftist hatred. The left ruthlessly tracks down any information about the conservatives, job, friends, family and attempts to cancel them. The left views the loss of livelihood and relationships and the price of dissent. That’s what happened to conservative journalist Amber Athey. After Athey made a joke about Vice President Kamala Harris’ outfit at last year’s State of the Union, enraged leftists harassed her employer, a local radio station in Washington D.C. into firing her. Athey views her experience as just one more piece of evidence that the right needs to fight the left on the same battlefield and cancel them. “I feel like if all of the cultural signals are that employers and society respond to cancellation attempts, then I don't see any reason why conservatives shouldn't try to wield that same power,” Athey says. “. I don't think it's too far for conservatives to do the same thing back and show them this is the logical conclusion of the societal culture that you've created.” Athey joins the show to talk about how conservatives should fight back against cancel culture, and how the left wields its cultural power. INTERVIEW | Elbridge Colby on China’s Next Move Regarding Taiwan and America’s Role
Already rocked by the war in Ukraine, the world uneasily looks towards Asia and the Chinese Communist Party. The authoritarian state has cast its gaze towards the small island of Taiwan, and dreams of conquest. America will inevitably be drawn into a potential conflict between China and Taiwan, but author and defense expert Elbridge Colby says we are woefully unprepared. “We're not doing what we need to do,” Colby says. “We spend a lot of money on defense, honestly, but we have not focused enough on dealing with China and adapting our force to deal with that specifically. I think we're just asking for trouble.” To Colby, an ascendent China is the biggest geopolitical threat currently facing the globe. And America needs to step up to deal with that threat. He says, “American interests in the world are Americans' physical security, our freedom and our prosperity. What is the chief danger of that? Well, by far it's China, and it's China dominating Asia in particular.” Colby joins the show to discuss what makes China so dangerous, and what steps America must take to neutralize the threat.
