Dallas Jenkins was considering hanging up his filmmaking hat after his movie “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” bombed at the box office in 2017. “I got to a place that weekend where I didn't know if I would ever make another movie again,” Jenkins says. “When you have a failure, it's hard to find people who are eager and willing to finance your next venture.” With the support of his church, the film director decided to jump back into making a short movie about the birth of Christ. It was a hit. “Long story short, that short film ended up being the catalyst … [for] 16,000 people all over the world investing over $10 million into season one of “The Chosen,” and the rest is history,” Jenkins says. “The Chosen,” based on the Gospels, is a streaming dramatic series that follows the ministry of Jesus and his disciples. Episodes from season one and two have been streamed over 400 million times. On Nov. 18, episodes one and two of the third season of “The Chosen” will premiere in theaters. “Season three is kind of this transition moment of the disciples going, 'Yay, we're officially Jesus' apostles. Why aren't things awesome?' They have to wrestle with that, and I think the viewer does too,” Jenkins says. China is vying to become the world's No. 1 superpower, a distinction long held by the U.S. The communist country "is threatening American innovation and national security by exploiting weaknesses in U.S. patent protection, and Big Tech is letting them get away with it," according to a synopsis for a new documentary film, "Innovation Race," which opens in theaters Wednesday. Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Spalding, author of "Stealth War: How China Took Over While America's Elites Slept," says that "the movie itself really talks about the importance of the patent system to innovation in the United States, how that's kept our country secure throughout the almost 240-plus years of existence, and how that security was negated by the America Invents Act. "And how in this competition that we face today, with China in particular, that it's creating a challenge for America in terms of innovation and keeping its rightful place at the top of science, technology, and research and development," Spalding says. The America Invents Act was passed and signed into law in 2011 by then-President Barack Obama, who at the time said the "much-needed reform will speed up the patent process so that innovators and entrepreneurs can turn a new invention into a business as quickly as possible." Spalding also discusses what he found to be the most surprising takeaway from the "Innovation Race" documentary. "Well, I in particular like the stories of the inventors. And I think understanding the personal calculations that they went through in terms of trying to protect their intellectual property and then realizing that they're not able to, to me was ... I think, the most important part of the film," he says. Bridget Ziegler was among the 30 school board candidates to earn the endorsement of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this year. It was a novel approach for a governor to endorse school board candidates, but one that paid off big time for conservatives who support education freedom and parental empowerment. Nationwide, many first-time candidates won election to school boards. And in Florida, all six DeSantis-endorsed candidates on the November ballot won their school board elections. For the year, 24 of the DeSantis-backed candidates were victorious. Even though Ziegler's election took place in August, she's continued to play an active role in school board elections nationwide as the Leadership Institute's director of school board programs. As results from Election Day continue to trickle in, it's still not clear whether Republicans or Democrats will control the next House and Senate, and by how much. However, it's clear that Republicans suffered both major wins and major losses in midterm elections across the nation. "Some of the big wins we saw in Florida. [Gov. Ron] DeSantis got about 19 [percentage points] over [Democrat Charlie] Crist, which is a massive margin. This is a state that Donald Trump carried in 2020 by 3 points," says Noah Weinrich, communications director for Heritage Action for America, the grassroots arm of The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.) "Historically before that, it's been seen as a swing state," Weinrich says of Florida. "It's the bellwether." On the flip side, however, Republicans suffered a loss in Pennsylvania's Senate race, where Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat, defeated Dr. Mehmet Oz, a Republican. "So some of the losses we saw ... were in really tight races like Pennsylvania. Dr. Oz lost against John Fetterman. I haven't checked the final margin, but it was only by, I believe, 2 points or something like that," Weinrich says. "Now, that was a state that President Trump won very narrowly in 2016 [and] lost very narrowly in 2020," he says. Concerns over inflation and the economy are driving voters to the polls. After three rounds of polling, Heritage Action for America Communications Director Noah Weinrich says the economy and inflation are the top issues for between 30% and 50% of voters. “And even for the other voters who have another issue as their top concern, the economy is in their top three,” Weinrich says. President Donald Trump’s greatest foreign policy achievement was the Abraham Accords advancing peace in the Middle East, says Gordon Sondland, who served as ambassador to the European Union under Trump. "I think the strategy behind the Abraham Accords was you can't keep doing the same thing and expect a different result," Sondland says. Peter Vlaming believes words have power, a conviction that cost him his job. Vlaming was fired from his position teaching French at West Point High School in Virginia in 2018 for refusing to call a female student by male pronouns. Vlaming said he was essentially given the option to either “deny” his own “Christian belief, in order to stay in the school system,” or stand and fight. “Sooner or later, you have to say, ‘No, I'm not going to do that,’” he said, a decision that cost him his teaching career. Vlaming sued the school board, and now, the Virginia Supreme Court will hear Vlaming’s case on Friday. The U.S. economy grew by 2.6% in the third quarter of 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reportreleased Thursday. Compared with the gross domestic product figure from the second quarter, which showed the economy shrunk 0.6%, that appears to be solid economic growth. Not quite—according to E.J. Antoni, a research fellow in regional economics in the Center for Data Analysis at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) "Usually, when we talk about these numbers, we always think a growing GDP means a growing economy, and that's good for people, but this is one of those instances where that's not really the case," Antoni says. Antoni offered his predictions for future GDP reports. "As a former bartender, I'll use a bit of an alcohol analogy here. This last report—the third-quarter report, that is—I think was last call. So, if you want to judge the party based on alcohol consumption, things are looking great. That's a high number, " he says. "But viewed in context, the party's over. And I think from here on out, we go back to negative numbers," he added. Colorado graphic artist Lorie Smith doesn't want to be forced to create wedding websites for same-sex couples. "I've always been creative, I've always wanted to design for weddings, and I want to design and create for weddings in a way that's consistent with God's view of marriage," Smith says. The 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party wrapped up its weeklong, twice-a-decade meeting over the weekend with Chinese President Xi Jinping securing his third five-year term. "The third term was not a surprise at all [but] the extent to which he consolidated his power was," Michael Cunningham, a research fellow at The Heritage Foundation, says of Xi's grip on the Chinese Communist Party. Xi "managed to get to force people to retire prematurely who were not his proteges and to replace them with proteges, his own handpicked people," Cunningham says. "So now he controls essentially the entire Politburo Standing Committee. There are very few checks on his power now." Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., warned on "Fox News Sunday" that Xi "has become the most powerful Chinese dictator since Mao."
