Louisiana AG: Big Tech Has Become 'Arm of the Government’
The Biden administration’s “Disinformation Governance Board” provided momentum for two states to sue the federal government that alleges pressure on and collusion with Big Tech companies to censor political content that challenges the government line. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt last week filed a federal lawsuit that alleges top-ranking government officials worked with social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to censors free speech and truthful information regarding COVID-19, election integrity and other matters. The lawsuit by Louisiana and Missouri names President Joe Biden, White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci, Disinformation Governance Board Director Nina Jankowicz, and other administration officials. Landry, Louisiana's attorney general, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about the lawsuit and whether the Biden administration is outsourcing censorship to Big Tech. Enjoy the show! Hidden Cameras Uncover How Schools Find Ways to Teach Critical Race Theory
Even if your state or county has banned the teaching of critical race theory in schools, it might still be being taught. Using hidden cameras, Accuracy in Media launched a series of investigations into school districts across the country that are still finding a way to teach students a curriculum that includes CRT. Adam Guillette, president of Accuracy in Media, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain what his organization has discovered. Also joining the show to talk about education solutions is Jonathan Butcher, The Heritage Foundation’s Will Skillman fellow in education. Sean Spicer Blasts Jen Psaki's Farewell Publicity Tour: 'Unethical and Wrong'
Jen Psaki's last day as White House press secretary will be this Friday, May 13. She's expected to move next to a high-profile role at MSNBC, according to Axios, which reported April 1 "the deal is nearly final" even though no contract has been signed. "I'm glad that she's found a soft landing," says Sean Spicer, who served as President Donald Trump's first press secretary. "But you can't then continue to serve. You can't sit at that podium knowing that your future colleagues are sitting there. ... I mean, this is so unethical and wrong." For the ethically challenged Biden administration, perhaps it's no big deal. But Spicer calls the decision "unprecedented." Having waited more than two years before becoming host of "Spicer & Co." on Newsmax, Spicer knows what it's like to go from the White House briefing room to the newsroom. He joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about his approach to covering the news, Newsmax's growth, and more. Listen to the full interview or read an abridged version at DailySignal.com. BONUS: SCOTUS 101 on the Dobbs Leak
Today on "The Daily Signal Podcast," we are featuring the latest episode of "SCOTUS 101" a sister podcast on the Heritage Podcast Network. Subscribe to SCOTUS 101: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/scotus-101/id1282064006 This week saw the biggest leak in Supreme Court history: a leaked opinion. And not just any opinion, but an early draft of a purported majority decision in the Dobbs case, which would, if issued, overrule Roe v. Wade and return abortion policy to the people of each state. Zack and GianCarlo chat about the leak, what it means for the Court, and what ought to happen to the leaker. They also discuss all the other news that was drowned out by the leak including the memorial service for Justice John Paul Stevens and a major First Amendment opinion issued this week. GianCarlo then interviews Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, and they talk about her career and her legal strategy in Dobbs. Finally, Zack quizzes GianCarlo about Justice Stevens' life and career. Here's a link to Zack and John Malcolm's article about whether the leaker can be criminally prosecuted. Hosted on Acast. How the Americans Became a Constitutional People
This latest podcast is a conversation with Gordon Wood, the great historian of the American Founding, on his new book, Power and Liberty, which details how Americans drafted, ratified, and incorporated written constitutions as fundamental laws into their politics and government. On the creation of the American Constitution, Wood observes, "Instead of reforming the Articles [of Confederation], they throw them out and create an entirely new government, the federal Constitution that we have with us today, something that nobody in 1776 even imagined in their wildest dreams. I know of no one in 1776 that anticipated the kind of federal government that emerged 10 years later. Something awful had to happen in those 10 years to explain the Constitution. I find that it's harder to explain the Constitution than it is to explain the Revolution itself." Wood also takes on the 1619 Project: "What's interesting about the Revolution is that the Revolution makes slavery a problem for the first time in Western civilization and leads to a massive assault on the slave systems of the New World. . . . The Northern states, almost immediately in 1776, mount a massive assault on slavery, which had been legal in all of these Northern states. By 1804, all the Northern states have abolished slavery, the first states in the history of the world, or at least the modern world, to abolish slavery." Hosted on Acast. Woman Who Survived 2 Abortion Attempts Shares Her Message to Pro-Choice Activists
Denisha Workizer was in her 40s when she learned her mother had tried to abort her not once, but twice. With the Supreme Court apparently set to overturn its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, Workizer says, she wants pro-abortion activists to consider that we “empower women by empowering life." "It's not empowering for a woman to kill her child,” she adds. Today, Workizer works with The Abortion Survivors Network, an organization that helps other survivors find hope and peace in their own stories. She joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" today to share her personal story of survival as well her message to both pro-choice and pro-life Americans. Also on today’s show, we cover these stories: The Biden administration is trying to weed out “disinformation,” but Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says he doesn't trust the government to determine what is and isn't disinformation. In a speech on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announces that Democrats will force a vote on legislation to codify Americans' access to abortion. Oberlin College Eats Just Desserts for Smearing Bakery
Back in 2016, clerks at Gibson’s Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio, stopped a group of black shoplifters from stealing from their store. What they didn’t realize was that act would set them on a six year legal battle. The tiny, family owned bakery was accused of racial profiling for stopping the shoplifters. That accusation caused students and faculty from nearby Oberlin College to engage in a smear campaign to get them shut down. A libel case filed by the owners of the bakery recently concluded, with the bakery owners emerging victorious. This hasn’t stopped the school from continuing to accuse the shop of being racist. “They have been completely unapologetic. They have been very aggressive towards this bakery,” says Bill Jacobson, a Cornell Law professor and founder of Legal Insurrection. “They continue to make their false accusations of racism against the bakery, they show no remorse whatsoever.” Jacobson and Legal Insurrection have been covering this case since the very beginning. He joins the show to give a background on the case, as well as discuss what the verdict means for other woke schools targeting small businesses. We also cover these stories: President Biden says the most “extreme political organization that’s existed in recent American history” is the “MAGA crowd.” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. wants to stop tax breaks for companies who cover travel costs for their employees to have an abortion. The computer repair shop owner who exposed Hunter Biden’s laptop has filed a defamation suit against Congressman Adam Schiff, Democrat from California, as well as CNN, the Daily Beast and Politico. Want a Pro-Life America? Look to Family and Church, Advocate Says
If Roe v. Wade in fact is overturned, ending abortion on demand, what happens next? Is the pro-life movement ready to meet the needs of mothers and families facing unplanned pregnancies? Roland Warren, president and CEO of the pro-life organization Care Net, says that although pregnancy centers play a role in helping women who have unplanned pregnancies, both the church and the family have a responsibility to defend life and serve these women. The first step in creating a culture of life in America requires rebuilding marriage and family "consistent with God's design,” Warren argues. Warren joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how families and places of worship can begin creating a culture of life in their communities. Also on today's show, we cover these stories: Chief Justice John Roberts confirms the authenticity of a leaked draft opinion indicating the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade and its legalization of abortion on demand. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announces that the Senate will vote on codifying "abortion rights." Liberal activists call for packing the Supreme Court to add justices in the wake of the leaked draft. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. What to Know About Leaked Supreme Court Draft Opinion That Would Overturn Roe v. Wade
History on the right to life was made Monday night in more ways than one. Someone at the Supreme Court leaked to the press a draft version of a majority opinion in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The nearly 100-page opinion, drafted by Justice Samuel Alito, says at one point that the high court's rulings in two previous cases allowing abortion on demand "must be overruled.”—Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). A leak of this magnitude, nearly two months before the anticipated release of the Supreme Court's opinion in Dobbs, is unprecedented. Carrie Campbell Severino, president of Judicial Crisis Network, joins this special episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how and why the draft opinion was leaked, and how quickly the justices may decide to release their final opinion. Why Homeland Security Chief Faces Impeachment for Biden's Border Crisis
The crisis at the southern border is likely to get worse because of the Biden administration's mishandling, or abandonment, of enforcement tools to stop illegal immigration. Last week, The Daily Signal was on the ground in South Texas interviewing border security experts. One is Mike Salinas, a 34-year veteran of the Border Patrol who retired in 2021. Salinas talks about the escalating border crisis in Texas, how the situation is worse under Joe Biden than Barack Obama, and how social media companies help cartels recruit smugglers of drugs and people. Also joining today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" is Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which supports enforcement of immigration laws and opposes amnesty. Krikorian's organization organized the border tour, in which The Daily Signal participated. Krikorian, author of the books "The New Case against Immigration, Both Legal and Illegal" and "How Obama is Transforming America Through Immigration," talks about how Biden and his homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, have failed to address the border crisis. Also on today's show, we cover these stories: Can a Christian flag be flown outside Boston City hall? Yes, the Supreme Court rules unanimously. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., has plans for President Biden’s new disinformation board. A Preview of What Happens at State Level If Roe v. Wade Falls
What will happen at the state level if the Supreme Court overturns its 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade? Can we expect more lawsuits like those we've seen in Kentucky and other states that recently passed pro-life legislation? Americans are waiting for the Supreme Court to announce its ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which could overturn Roe and send the issue of abortion back to the states to regulate. In anticipation of a change in federal abortion law, pro-life leaders are seeing a “ton of activity at the states,” says Sarah Parshall Perry, a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.) Perry joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what likely will happen in conservative and liberal states across the country if the high court strikes down Roe. Also on today's show, we cover these stories: President Joe Biden calls on Congress to pass supplemental funding to the tune of $33 billion to continue aide to Ukraine. Is Critical Race Theory Being Taught in Our Schools? Author Says Yes.
Parents were horrified during the COVID-19 pandemic as they discovered how left-wing activist teachers were indoctrinating their kids in the classroom. Critical race theory, a Marxism-based ideology, burst onto the scene in a big way. The left claims that what’s being taught in classrooms isn’t critical race theory. But is that true? Jonathan Butcher, an education expert at The Heritage Foundation, says critical race theory isn't just now showing up in classrooms. He contends it's been there for decades. "[In the] 1980s, 1990s, you're having teachers become trained in the idea that America is systemically racist, that we should be teaching students not so much about what they share as Americans, but about their identities, the things that separate them and make them different from each other," Butcher explained. Butcher found the trend so troubling, he wrote a book, released April 19, ”Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth,” to help expose just how dangerous the ideology is. He joins the show to talk about the book, reveal the truth about critical race theory in America’s schools, and prescribe some solutions to get it out of curriculums. We also cover these stories: Russian President Vladimir Putin pushes back against Western assertions that Russia was failing in its invasion of Ukraine, saying that his war goals will be “unconditionally fulfilled.” New data shows teen suicides increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. From Suicidal to Serving Others: The Story of a Veteran and His Dog
Cole Lyle held a gun in his hand, ready to take his own life, when a friend knocked on his door. “I'll be honest with you, in my opinion it is divine intervention because my finger was literally on the trigger,” Lyle, a Marine veteran, says. After six years in the military, Lyle was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He had tried medication and was going to therapy, but none of it worked, he recalls. That’s when he began exploring the option of getting a service dog. Lyle spent $10,000 of his own money on Kaya, a loving German shepherd, because the Department of Veterans Affairs didn't provide funds for acquiring service dogs. Kaya brought needed purpose back to his life, Lyle says, so he became an advocate of veterans getting access to service dogs. Today, Lyle is executive director of Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit that brings the needs of veterans directly to members of Congress. Lyle joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his personal story and to explain how all Americans can help veterans who are struggling after their service to America. Also on today's show, we cover these stories: Russian President Vladimir Putin “never imagined that the world would rally behind Ukraine so swiftly and surely” says Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Why Our Southern Border Crisis Could Soon Get Even Worse
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing the threat of impeachment should Republicans reclaim control of the U.S. House. An unprecedented border crisis and its ravaging effects prompted 133 House Republicans to write to Mayorkas on Monday, citing "grave questions" about his "suitability for office." Only once in U.S. history has the House impeached a Cabinet official; Secretary of War William Belknap was later acquitted by the Senate in 1876. Now, nearly 150 years later, pressure is building on Mayorkas. Mark Morgan, acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Trump administration, says the the problem on our southern border is about to get much worse. He joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain what's happening and why it matters to every American. That's one reason he supports Mayorkas' impeachment. "He's turning a blind eye. He has failed the United States. He has failed this country, so he should be impeached," Morgan tells The Daily Signal. Morgan, who previously served as chief of U.S. Border Patrol in the Obama administration and was acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is currently a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation (publisher of The Daily Signal). Empower Parents, Punish Criminals: Jason Miyares' Commonsense Approach as Virginia Attorney General
Three months into his tenure as Virginia’s attorney general, Jason Miyares is delivering on his promises to promote parental rights and punish violent criminals. Those issues animated voters last November and they’re now front and center for the state’s top law enforcement officer. Miyares is part of a trio of Republicans who sent shockwaves through Richmond, unseating a two-term Democrat attorney general—the first to beat an incumbent for the job since 1885. Just days after taking office, Miyares found himself defending Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order empowering parents to decide if their kids should be masked in school. He hasn’t slowed down since. Miyares joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss parental rights, rogue prosecutors, and his family’s escape from Communist Cuba. Lessons From Past 100 Years of American Conservatism
Matthew Continetti is a journalist and historian of American conservatism. He is currently a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He joins this Saturday Edition of the Daily Signal Podcast to discuss his new book, The Right: The Hundred-Year War for American Conservatism. Continetti covers the history of American conservatism stretching back to the 1920s and the presidencies of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. He makes a number of thought-provoking observations in the book. He notes that "I'm looking at how the intellectuals, the writers, the thinkers, the economists responded to politics, how they influence politics, how they reacted to political developments. And then I'm also looking at how the institutional Republican Party, how did it fit into this picture? What conservative ideas did it adopt? How did it begin to regain its majority after the new deal era?" He also adds that much of conservatism is now led by the Heritage Foundation, Hillsdale College's DC Kirby Campus, and the Claremont Institute's Center for the American Way of Life. The challenge is for these institutions to help provide policy solutions rooted in a populist conservatism that is grounded in constitutional institutions. Hosted on Acast. NBA Player Enes Kanter Freedom Stands Tall for Justice
Although he gained initial attention for speaking out against the genocidal Chinese Communist Party, pro basketball player Enes Kanter Freedom has been a human rights advocate for nearly a decade now. Freedom says he believes that due to his status as a famous athlete, having played for five NBA teams, he has a responsibility to speak up for causes he's passionate about. "If you are an athlete, you can inspire millions of people out there, especially kids, especially our young generation," says Freedom, who was born in Switzerland to Turkish parents. "If you are well educated enough, if you know what you are talking about, yes, it is important to stand up for things that you believe in." Freedom, who became an American citizen last year, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to share his story of getting involved in human rights activism. He also offers advice for those of us who want to make a difference in the world. Rep. Mike Johnson: Americans Have 3 Big Concerns Right Now
Americans are worried about "three I's" right now: inflation, immigration, and general incompetence, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., says. Citizens across the country are "deeply concerned about grocery prices and the price of fuel to fill up the gas tank," Johnson says. "And they see the wave of illegal migrants coming over the border, and they don't see any end to it. They're frustrated with us for our inability to do anything about it right now." The Louisiana Republican joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what he and other conservative lawmakers are doing to address these "three I's," and how the Biden administration has failed to tackle the challenges America faces. Deroy Murdock Reveals Troubling State of Our Elections
Election integrity is essential to a functioning country. Americans deserve to know that their elections are being conducted fairly and that their votes count. Unfortunately, many have reason to think our elections aren’t secure. Deroy Murdock, a Fox News contributor and senior fellow at the Atlas Network, says he sees election integrity and voter fraud as issues that will determine the continued existence of America as we know it. “We can’t even tolerate the appearance of vote fraud, because even the mere appearance of vote fraud causes people to lose confidence in our leadership and in our system,” says Murdock, whose columns appear regularly in The Daily Signal. “And pretty soon, our constitutional republic starts to dissolve.” Murdock joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the issue of clean and honest elections, and how we can make them more secure. We also cover these stories: Following a ruling by a federal judge in Florida, the Biden administration ends its extended mandate requiring masks on public transportation such as planes and trains. Mom Explains Tragic Reality of Gender Ideology That Claimed Her Daughter
Abby Martinez knows firsthand how gender ideology can negatively affect a young life. Martinez's daughter Yaeli began taking cross-sex hormones in high school and changed her name to Andrew. When Martinez raised concerns about the path her teen daughter was on, she lost custody of Yaeli to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Yaeli later took her own life at age 19. “I wish the system, instead of spending millions of dollars on these kids, having them in foster care, [would instead] support us as a parent and give us the tools that we need,” Martinez says. Martinez joins “The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about what happened next and how the lives of her whole family have been changed forever by a transgender movement that promotes “sex change” for children, teens, and young adults. LA Sheriff: Policies of Soros-Backed Prosecutor Profit Criminals
Crime is on the rise in Los Angeles, and the soft-on-criminals policies of District Attorney George Gascon are a major cause, Sheriff Alex Villanueva says. When Gascon took office in December 2020 as one of the successful candidates backed by liberal financier George Soros, he issued a list of crimes that the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office no longer would prosecute. Those changes are “unleashing a wave of crime by not prosecuting criminals who are victimizing poor people, people of color, people that live in the toughest neighborhoods in our communities,” Villanueva says. Villanueva, a lieutenant in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department when he was elected sheriff in 2018, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Gascon's policies led to criminals being released back onto the streets and how the "defund the police" movement has affected his workforce. Also on today’s show, we cover these stories: The Biden administration extends the mask mandate for many travelers, especially on planes and trains, for another 15 days. Sex-Change Surgeries for Kids: A-OK With Biden
The Biden administration recently sent a letter to the attorney general of each state, warning the top law enforcement officials that they could be violating civil rights law if they don’t comply with “gender-affirming care” procedures for children. But just what is this gender-affirming care promoted by President Joe Biden, and how does it affect kids? Jay Richards, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, says the term is a euphemism for giving hormones to children and, in many cases, performing irreversible surgery on them. These hormones and surgeries have long-term consequences for a child. “If you give a girl heavy doses of testosterone for several years, this causes her uterus to atrophy. It can effectively sterilize her,” Richards says. “And the same thing if you’ve got a boy, especially these pre-pubescents: So you delay puberty and then you give him estrogen. This can not only sterilize the child, it can actually make them so they can’t even function sexually.” Richards joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss gender ideology and reveal how the Biden administration is pushing it on America’s children. We also cover these stories: Consumer prices rose by 8.5% in March, the highest level since December 1981, the Labor Department says. How Left’s Obsession With Critical Race Theory Hurts Minority Students
The left makes a big deal about teaching race in America. From the 1619 Project to critical race theory, the left claims that America is irredeemably steeped in racism and that race should be the central focus of all aspects of American life. Delano Squires, a homeschool father and scholar at the pro-America education group 1776 Unites, says that isn’t helpful. Hyperfocusing on race and racism sows division, and also foments hatred for America, he says. “It doesn’t matter what country or what ethnicity, because I can’t think of any institution in which a person flourishes when they hate the institution,” Squires says. “I don’t know of anyone who hates their wife that would then say that they have a good marriage, or hates their job and then turns around and says, ‘Yeah, I want to work there for the next 40 years.'” Squires joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how race should be taught in our schools, and why the left’s brand of race-conscious education is a bad idea. We also cover these stories: Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first time a European leader has done so since Russia invaded Ukraine. Los Angeles Prosecutors Decry Disturbing Results of DA George Gascon's Policies
LOS ANGELES—What is a rogue prosecutor? Why is Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon considered one of the most progressive prosecutors in America? How have his new policies led to a crime increase in Los Angeles? Gascon has “really completely abandoned his responsibility to the public,” says Kathy Cady, a former Los Angeles prosecutor who now works as a victim’s rights attorney. The ways in which Gascon is changing L.A's prosecutorial system is “negatively impacting communities of color” and “murder victims' families,” Cady says. Cady joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” along with Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Eric Siddall to explain how progressive, or rogue, prosecutors are affecting LA crime rates and crime victims. Elon Musk Makes Moves on Twitter. What Comes Next?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has acquired a 9.2% share of Twitter stock and joined the social media company’s board of directors. The internet buzzed with the possibility of a free speech advocate like Musk having an internal position with the tech giant. But what does all of this really mean? To Annie Butler, a research associate at the The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Technology Policy, Musk’s taking a more active role at Twitter is a step in the right direction toward encouraging free speech on the platform. Butler joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the implications of Musk’s move, and how some popular tech companies focused on free speech are doing. Rep. Debbie Lesko Reveals GOP Plan to Lower Gas Prices
As gas and other energy prices continue to soar, Americans are desperate for relief. The question is, what does Congress plan to do about it? Rep. Debbie Lesko, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has some answers on today’s edition of “The Daily Signal Podcast.” Lesko, R-Ariz., pledges that if the GOP regains the majority in Congress, lawmakers will act swiftly to reduce gas prices and increase America’s energy independence. “Republicans will introduce legislation to codify into law some of the rules and regulations that the Trump administration put forward … to reduce the time for permitting of new production facilities, reduce the time of permitting for new pipelines, and help Americans increase U.S. oil and gas production,” Lesko says. “When Republicans come into control, we want to put America first,” she says. Lesko discusses the Biden administration’s failure to manage gas prices, and what congressional Republicans see as the solutions. Historian Explains How 6 Presidents Fought Washington Swamp
From time to time, the American people elect a champion to take on the Washington swamp. Historian Larry Schweikart joins "The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss his new book "Dragonslayers: Six Presidents and Their War With the Swamp." The six presidents Schweikart profiles are Abraham Lincoln, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and Donald Trump. They came from different backgrounds and different political parties, but all had their own unique tussles with the swamp during their time in office. The presidential historian lays out the almost cyclical nature of Americans electing swamp fighters. "I think also we see a pattern where these guys kind of knock the swamp back a little bit, and then it crawls back to life, like some horrible monster and 10, 15, 20 years later, somebody else has to step up and fight it again," Schweikart says. Schweikart is a historian of American political history and has written numerous books, including the best-selling "A Patriot's History of the United States." We also cover these stories: President Joe Biden on Monday called Russian President Vladimir Putin a war criminal, and said evidence should be gathered in order to put him on trial. What Educating Our Kids Looks Like After COVID-19
This Saturday edition of "The Daily Signal Podcast" features a discussion with Andy Smarick, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, on how education is evolving after the COVID-19 pandemic. School lockdowns, masking, and other restrictions have affected how parents across America think about their children's education. COVID-19 accelerated certain trends that already were afoot, such as the demand for increasing school choice opportunities outside public schools. Moreover, parts of America have been the scene of tremendous battles over the content of curriculum, particularly regarding critical race theory, which parents were shocked to find in their children's instruction. So what's next? Smarick observes that COVID-19 launched "small learning communities really oriented around the needs of families and kids" because restrictions during the pandemic resulted in "50 million students [who] suddenly had to find something different because their schools were shut down." "And that's when we saw the rise of pods, hubs, and hybrid homeschooling and also microschooling," he says. "This is just a wonderful Tocquevillian response, spontaneous order to a calamitous situation where all these parents were saying, 'Heavens, we just need new options for our kids because they're not getting anything and I still have to work.'" The real question is whether this revolution in education will continue. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

March for Life Marches On in Hopes of a Post-Roe World
The Supreme Court is considering the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which has the potential to severely limit or eliminate access to abortion. Each year since 1974, the March for Life has made its way peacefully through the nation’s capital, its hosts of participants calling for an end to abortion on demand, which the high court ushered in with its 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade. Now that the time may be at hand, the event is coming to various states, where the fight for life will go on. Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life, recently visited Connecticut for that state's first march. She says life is winning, even in states as blue as Connecticut. "We got over 3,000 people out for the first march, which is a good number for a state march, and the enthusiasm was palpable," Mancini says. "Churches were very active. ... There were a lot of periphery events, and I'm hoping and praying that we started just a new spark with the grassroots in Connecticut for life." Mancini joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the pro-life movement's next step, and what a post-Roe world might look like. Rep. Kevin Hern Offers GOP Alternative to Biden's Tax-and-Spend Budget
President Joe Biden on Monday announced a proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2023 that includes a wish list of leftist policy proposals as well as an unprecedented tax on unrealized gains. To Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., Biden's budget fails to help Americans deal with exploding inflation and doubles down on the deficit spending that got America into this mess in the first place. "The Biden budget is horrendous. It increases spending by some $75 trillion over the next decade," Hern says. "It increases taxes by $55 trillion. We got $55 trillion in taxes. So you do the math, and that's $20 trillion in additional debt over the next decade on top of our $31 trillion now." "So by his own budget, it never balances, and we have over $50 trillion in debt in 10 years," the Oklahoma Republican says on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Worse still, that increase in debt compounds horrific inflation. "Inflation is a taxation on everyone. It knows no party. It knows no economic status of a family," Hern says. "But what it does do, it hurts everybody, more on the lower end of the income scale than it does some on the upper end." Hern and his GOP colleagues offer an alternative, a plan to lower the deficit and unleash the American economy. "Our goal is to remind the Americans what the conservative values of the Republican party are about being fiscally responsible, limited government, keeping more money in your pocket so that you can spend in your communities where we don't have to reallocate it from the federal government," he says. Hern joins the show to discuss Biden's budget and the GOP alternative. Almost every day, it seems as though a Big Tech company has deplatformed another user. User content is blocked or removed continually. What is being done to hold Big Tech accountable for its actions? What is Section 230 in U.S. law, and does it need to be reformed? How can we protect both free speech and free markets? “These tech companies have become very destructive in so many different ways, and it is time for Congress to act on behalf of the American people, on behalf of parents, and on behalf of our children and the young generation," Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., says. Rep. Garret Graves: America Can Take These Steps Toward Energy Independence
As gas prices rise, the Biden administration is “looking for someone to blame, and unfortunately they really just need to turn and look at themselves,” Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., says. The Biden administration “talks about environmental sustainability, [but] they don't think about economic sustainability as well,” Graves says, adding that when it comes to energy policy, President Joe Biden seems to be “governing by emotion, not by fact, science, and economics.” Graves, who heads the Energy, Climate, and Conservation task force for the House's GOP caucus, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” from the House Republican Issues Conference in Florida to discuss Biden’s mishandling of American energy policy, and what lawmakers can do in the long and short term to lower gas prices and move the country back toward energy independence. Republican House Leaders Elise Stefanik and Steve Scalise Outline GOP Agenda
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.—Republicans say they have a plan to address the biggest problems facing our country, problems they say the left created. "We are seeing the results of unified far-left Democrat government and how that's caused an inflation crisis, an energy crisis with the highest prices at the pump in our nation's history, ... If America does not take strategic action now, our children will be the ones bearing the burden of that tension between China and America, the Texas lawmaker says. How Penny Nance Is Fighting to Keep Men Out Women's Sports
Transgender swimmer Lia Thompson is making waves. The biological male swimmer from the University of Pennsylvania is dominating his female counterparts in the pool. Thompson's races have garnered a massive amount of media attention, and an increasing number of Americans are questioning how it's fair that a man can compete with women. Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America, says that the biological men are destroying women's sports, and that it's simply not fair for female athletes to be forced to compete against them. "When you have young women who have worked for years, through their careers in high school and you have moms and dads who have gotten up in the dark at 5:00 AM to drive their daughters to swim practice... but now they're being forced to compete against biological men... It's not a fair fight," Nance argues. "They can't win. Ultimately, they cannot win. And Lia Thomas typifies this issue." Nance joins this bonus episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss a Title IX complaint her organization filed, and how transgenderism is destroying women's sports. Hosted on Acast. A Look at Judge Jackson's Record on Unions
President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, has come under fire for her positions on child porn sentencing, court stacking, and immigration. Now David Osborne, CEO of Americans for Fair Treatment, tells "The Daily Signal Podcast" that Jackson has another controversial position: her views on labor. "Even taking Ketanji Brown Jackson at her best, she's got new judicial philosophies. She's got her own view on the First Amendment and how it should work. She's definitely got her own perspective on how federal sector bargaining should work," says Osborne. "And she's going to bring that to the court. And she may drive some of these issues. I think unions are getting what they're paying for." Osborne joins the show to discuss those concerns, and what they could mean if Jackson is confirmed to the court. We also cover these stories: Sen. How Student Protesters Killed Free Speech at Yale Law School
Free speech is under fire at America's universities. It's an open secret that liberals dominate academia and wield their power with impunity on college campuses. But recently, radical leftists have become more brazen with their attempts speech and organizations they don't like. During a recent bipartisan free speech event at Yale Law School, a mob of student protesters shouted down Kristen Waggoner, general counsel of Alliance Defending Freedom. Protesters were "shouting down the speakers, shouting down some of their fellow students who had conservative views, and then they left and started pounding on the walls outside of the exits at the building, eventually creating what felt like an unsafe environment and the police were called," says Waggoner. Waggoner joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what happened at that Yale event, and how free speech is in decline at America’s universities. The Next Generation of Courageous Leaders
Generation Z is already making its mark on America. Born after 1996, these young Americans came of age in an era of rapid technological change—smartphones, social media, and our interconnected world. The oldest are already in the workforce while others are in the process of figuring out their careers. Fortunately, there are good organizations to provide the leadership and training for this next generation. The Fund for American Studies is one of them. It has influenced the lives of thousands of conservative leaders, journalists (including The Daily Signal's own Fred Lucas), and others since its founding in 1967. How the Conservative Movement Was Built
Stan Evans helped build the conservative movement by founding the American Conservative Union, the Conservative Political Action Conference, and establishing the National Journalism Center. He was, in addition, a tremendous journalist and thinker. His book, "The Theme Is Freedom," should be a conservative classic, Steven Hayward observes in his new book, "M. Stanton Evans: Conservative Wit, Apostle of Freedom." What also made Stan Evans so very unique was his tremendous humor which he used to undermine Progressive moralizing. Hayward notes that a standard liberal critique of America was to say that any country that can land a man on the moon, can enact x progressive policy. Evans's response was "any country that can land a man on the moon can abolish the income tax." Evans once said to the consternation of liberals at Princeton that "I didn't support Nixon until after Watergate. Look, after wage and price controls, Watergate was a breath of fresh air." They were not amused, but we can be and learn from this giant of conservative journalism and institution building. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Getting Squeezed at Pump? Blame Biden, Not Putin
All across the country, Americans are facing staggering gasoline prices, pinching their wallets even further as inflation runs rampant. But what’s causing gas prices to skyrocket? The Biden administration blames Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, as well as greedy U.S. business owners, for the sharp rise in prices. But that doesn’t pass the smell test for Katie Tubb, a senior policy analyst for energy and environmental issues at The Heritage Foundation. “I think it’s incredibly disingenuous for the administration to say that, in part because Americans aren’t stupid and they saw prices go up before Russia invaded Ukraine,” Tubb says. “And so I find that, honestly, a very discouraging characterization by the Biden administration.” Tubb joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what’s really causing soaring gas prices, and how the Biden administration needs to respond to fix it. Trump's Ambassador to Mexico Details Biden's Failures on Border
Under President Donald Trump, the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. fell. But now, under President Joe Biden, that progress has been reversed and record numbers of migrants are making their way across the border illegally. To Christopher Landau, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, this didn't have to be the case. "I'm not sure I would say that Biden has a vision about the relationship with Mexico. To be honest with you, I think he just doesn't want to do what Trump did," Landau says. "Biden and a lot of people in his party spent four years saying that Trump was literally Hitler and that these were terrible border policies," the former ambassador adds. "And so on Day One, they came in with a lot of activists who had been the ones screaming the loudest against Trump and [issued] all kinds of orders, executive orders that basically loosened control over the border. And not surprisingly, that immediately led to a huge wave of people." Landau joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his tenure representing America abroad, and how we can fix the ongoing crisis in border security. We also cover these stories: Sen.
