She's expected to move next to a high-profile role at MSNBC, according to Axios, which reported April 1 "the deal is nearly final" even though no contract has been signed. This latest podcast is a conversation with Gordon Wood, the great historian of the American Founding, on his new book, Power and Liberty, which details how Americans drafted, ratified, and incorporated written constitutions as fundamental laws into their politics and government. On the creation of the American Constitution, Wood observes, "Instead of reforming the Articles [of Confederation], they throw them out and create an entirely new government, the federal Constitution that we have with us today, something that nobody in 1776 even imagined in their wildest dreams. I know of no one in 1776 that anticipated the kind of federal government that emerged 10 years later. Something awful had to happen in those 10 years to explain the Constitution. I find that it's harder to explain the Constitution than it is to explain the Revolution itself." Wood also takes on the 1619 Project: "What's interesting about the Revolution is that the Revolution makes slavery a problem for the first time in Western civilization and leads to a massive assault on the slave systems of the New World. . . . The Northern states, almost immediately in 1776, mount a massive assault on slavery, which had been legal in all of these Northern states. Denisha Workizer was in her 40s when she learned her mother had tried to abort her not once, but twice. With the Supreme Court apparently set to overturn its 1973 decision in Roe v. Back in 2016, clerks at Gibson’s Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio, stopped a group of black shoplifters from stealing from their store. What they didn’t realize was that act would set them on a six year legal battle. The tiny, family owned bakery was accused of racial profiling for stopping the shoplifters. That accusation caused students and faculty from nearby Oberlin College to engage in a smear campaign to get them shut down. A libel case filed by the owners of the bakery recently concluded, with the bakery owners emerging victorious. This hasn’t stopped the school from continuing to accuse the shop of being racist. “They have been completely unapologetic. They have been very aggressive towards this bakery,” says Bill Jacobson, a Cornell Law professor and founder of Legal Insurrection. “They continue to make their false accusations of racism against the bakery, they show no remorse whatsoever.” Jacobson and Legal Insurrection have been covering this case since the very beginning. History on the right to life was made Monday night in more ways than one. Someone at the Supreme Court leaked to the press a draft version of a majority opinion in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The nearly 100-page opinion, drafted by Justice Samuel Alito, says at one point that the high court's rulings in two previous cases allowing abortion on demand "must be overruled.”—Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). A leak of this magnitude, nearly two months before the anticipated release of the Supreme Court's opinion in Dobbs, is unprecedented. Parents were horrified during the COVID-19 pandemic as they discovered how left-wing activist teachers were indoctrinating their kids in the classroom. Critical race theory, a Marxism-based ideology, burst onto the scene in a big way. The left claims that what’s being taught in classrooms isn’t critical race theory. But is that true? Jonathan Butcher, an education expert at The Heritage Foundation, says critical race theory isn't just now showing up in classrooms. He contends it's been there for decades. "[In the] 1980s, 1990s, you're having teachers become trained in the idea that America is systemically racist, that we should be teaching students not so much about what they share as Americans, but about their identities, the things that separate them and make them different from each other," Butcher explained. Butcher found the trend so troubling, he wrote a book, released April 19, ”Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth,” to help expose just how dangerous the ideology is. Cole Lyle held a gun in his hand, ready to take his own life, when a friend knocked on his door. “I'll be honest with you, in my opinion it is divine intervention because my finger was literally on the trigger,” Lyle, a Marine veteran, says. After six years in the military, Lyle was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He had tried medication and was going to therapy, but none of it worked, he recalls. That’s when he began exploring the option of getting a service dog. Lyle spent $10,000 of his own money on Kaya, a loving German shepherd, because the Department of Veterans Affairs didn't provide funds for acquiring service dogs. Kaya brought needed purpose back to his life, Lyle says, so he became an advocate of veterans getting access to service dogs. Today, Lyle is executive director of Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit that brings the needs of veterans directly to members of Congress. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing the threat of impeachment should Republicans reclaim control of the U.S. House. An unprecedented border crisis and its ravaging effects prompted 133 House Republicans to write to Mayorkas on Monday, citing "grave questions" about his "suitability for office." Crime is on the rise in Los Angeles, and the soft-on-criminals policies of District Attorney George Gascon are a major cause, Sheriff Alex Villanueva says. The Biden administration recently sent a letter to the attorney general of each state, warning the top law enforcement officials that they could be violating civil rights law if they don’t comply with “gender-affirming care” procedures for children. But just what is this gender-affirming care promoted by President Joe Biden, and how does it affect kids? Jay Richards, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation’s DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, says the term is a euphemism for giving hormones to children and, in many cases, performing irreversible surgery on them. These hormones and surgeries have long-term consequences for a child. “If you give a girl heavy doses of testosterone for several years, this causes her uterus to atrophy. The left makes a big deal about teaching race in America. From the 1619 Project to critical race theory, the left claims that America is irredeemably steeped in racism and that race should be the central focus of all aspects of American life. The Supreme Court is considering the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which has the potential to severely limit or eliminate access to abortion. Each year since 1974, the March for Life has made its way peacefully through the nation’s capital, its hosts of participants calling for an end to abortion on demand, which the high court ushered in with its 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade. Now that the time may be at hand, the event is coming to various states, where the fight for life will go on. President Joe Biden on Monday announced a proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2023 that includes a wish list of leftist policy proposals as well as an unprecedented tax on unrealized gains. To Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., Biden's budget fails to help Americans deal with exploding inflation and doubles down on the deficit spending that got America into this mess in the first place. "The Biden budget is horrendous. It increases spending by some $75 trillion over the next decade," Hern says. "It increases taxes by $55 trillion. We got $55 trillion in taxes. So you do the math, and that's $20 trillion in additional debt over the next decade on top of our $31 trillion now." "So by his own budget, it never balances, and we have over $50 trillion in debt in 10 years," the Oklahoma Republican says on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Worse still, that increase in debt compounds horrific inflation. "Inflation is a taxation on everyone. It knows no party. It knows no economic status of a family," Hern says. "But what it does do, it hurts everybody, more on the lower end of the income scale than it does some on the upper end." Over 100,000 Americans die each year from opioid overdoses. One of them was 21-year-old Garrett Holman. His father, Don Holman, has worked ceaselessly to educate the public about the scourge of opioids and how they affected his family. "This tragedy ripped our family apart," Holman says. "At this point in time, after losing my son, no matter what I accomplish or what I do, I don't feel like I'll ever win." "I can lose less if I can do something," he says. "It may be talking to you today, it may be testifying in front of Congress. It may be talking to my Uber driver on the way home and [finding] out that they have a child going through something, and I can share just something to encourage them or give them some guidance." But all around the world, people are seeing images of hope and faith amid Ukraine's gloom. In basements, rubble-strewn streets, and underground rail stations, the Ukrainian people are coming together. Pastor Andrew Moroz, an American, was born in Ukraine and has many relatives there. He says he understands the desire to keep up hope. "Life in some ways has to go on in the midst of a war zone," Moroz says. "There are some things that are normal and there are many things that are not normal that are happening right now, but people are continuing to pursue each other and pursue God in some way." Under President Donald Trump, the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. fell. But now, under President Joe Biden, that progress has been reversed and record numbers of migrants are making their way across the border illegally. To Christopher Landau, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, this didn't have to be the case. "I'm not sure I would say that Biden has a vision about the relationship with Mexico. To be honest with you, I think he just doesn't want to do what Trump did," Landau says. "Biden and a lot of people in his party spent four years saying that Trump was literally Hitler and that these were terrible border policies," the former ambassador adds. "And so on Day One, they came in with a lot of activists who had been the ones screaming the loudest against Trump and [issued] all kinds of orders, executive orders that basically loosened control over the border. And not surprisingly, that immediately led to a huge wave of people."
