INTERVIEW | McFarland Explains How China Is Benefiting From Russia-Ukraine War
OXON HILL, Md.—A leading national security expert is weighing in on how the Chinese Communist Party is exploiting the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. "It's a good question, because who wins the war against Russia, Ukraine? Who wins the war against NATO, the West, and Russia? China wins this war, because they let us go at each other," said K.T. McFarland, who served as President Donald Trump's deputy national security adviser and also served in the Reagan, Nixon, and Ford administrations. "China knows the longer this goes on, the more the United States' spending $100 billion a year [in Ukraine], the more we're spending our resources in Europe, and the less we're focused on China," McFarland says. adding: So, meanwhile, China's building up its own military. It's building up its own trade relationships with a lot of countries. So, they're perfectly happy with the United States to be preoccupied with Russia and Ukraine and not focusing on China—because, look, China's the real gorilla. They're the real strategic threat. McFarland joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to comment on how Ukraine can "win the peace" in its war against Russia, reports that China may be supplying Russia with lethal aid, and how to bring the threat of the Chinese Communist Party into focus for the American people. "The transgender movement is actually an industry," Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries and one of the book's co-authors, told The Daily Signal in an interview Wednesday. Pharmaceutical companies and activists use it "to elevate themselves into positions of political power and to earn obscene profits." INTERVIEW | Lawyer Ian Prior and Former Trump Comms Staffer Roma Daravi on Combatting Woke Culture and 'School-to-Ccalpel Pipeline'
On today's edition of "The Daily Signal Podcast," a former White House communications staffer said the Department of Energy report lending credence to the theory that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab represents an "I-told-you-so to the nth degree" after the legacy media and Big Tech cracked down on then President Donald Trump and others for suggesting it. "Much of what we are seeing in the news today, especially coming from [President] Joe Biden's agencies, has been a string of lies, so when you see a headline that reads, 'The Department of Energy has confirmed that it does in fact suspect the Wuhan virus came from the Wuhan lab in China,' you almost have to pause for a second and make sure you're not reading a Babylon Bee article," Roma Daravi, former White House deputy director of strategic communications under Trump and founder and CEO of Daravi Strategies, tells The Daily Signal. President Joe Biden does not understand the threat China poses to America, according to Sen. "Both of them don't want America to lead the world. They don't like democracy. They don't like freedom. They don't like liberty,” the Florida lawmaker says. With concerns over ties between China and Russia growing stronger, America has to “assume the worst,” the senator says. BONUS | ‘The Anti-Defamation League Defamed Us,’ GiveSendGo Co-Founder Says
Heather Wilson, co-founder of the crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo, told The Daily Signal that the Anti-Defamation League, a prominent Jewish legal advocacy group, smeared her organization. “The Anti-Defamation League defamed us [without] having any facts behind it,” Wilson said, emphasizing the word in an interview Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference. She said the organization was referring to alleged extremists “who are raising funds for legal fees, because we allow that on GiveSendGo, because we allow it in the United States of America.” The Anti-Defamation League, or ADL, did not respond to The Daily Signal‘s request for comment. Wilson, whose organization allows individuals to raise funds for a wide variety of peaceful and legal causes, faulted ADL for putting out “a hit piece on GiveSendGo,” referring to a January report titled “How Bigots and Extremists Collect and Use Millions in Online Donations.” “It said GiveSendGo was the main crowdfunder of these extremist terrorist groups and they quoted some numbers, however many millions of dollars have been raised by extremist terrorist groups on GiveSendGo, but they don’t quote any [specific] campaigns,” Wilson said. “So they might put like one or two and if you click on the campaigns they’re quoting, there’s like $400 or $250.” Wilson said ADL never reached out to GiveSendGo for comment. “What it comes down to, they never reached out to us,” she recalled. “Usually if you’re going to put a piece out on somebody, you want to get the other’s opinion or some talking points or, ‘What do you think?’ Give us a chance.” Wilson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the work of GiveSendGo. INTERVIEW | Why 'Canceling Student Loan Debt Is Not Legal,' Iowa Attorney General Explains
Iowa is one of six states suing the Biden administration over the president's plan to forgive billions in student loan debt. “Canceling student loan debt is not legal,” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird says. “In order for that to happen, something would have to pass the House, the Senate, [and] be signed by the president. It's basic constitutional law.” Last year, President Joe Biden announced plans to forgive $10,000 of debt for individual student loan borrowers who make less than $125,000 per year ($250,000 for households) and $20,000 for borrowers who received a Pell Grant. Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Carolina sued the Biden administration over the loan forgiveness plan and on Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the legal challenge. Bird, Iowa's first Republican attorney general since 1979, was at the Supreme Court during the arguments and joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain her key takeaways and how she thinks the justices will rule on the case. INTERVIEW | How China Is Dominating African Minerals, and Why US Should Care
An energy expert is sounding the alarm over the Chinese Communist Party's dominance of African minerals. "It's such an important topic because President [Joe] Biden and the governor of California, Gov. [Gavin] Newsom have the goal of having all new-vehicle sales in the United States battery-powered electric by 2035, so if we're going to have all electric vehicles with batteries, we need the minerals for those batteries, and the United States used to produce those minerals," says Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of the Center for Energy, Climate and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Lithium brine and cobalt and nickel ores are among the minerals needed for electric vehicles with batteries, Furchtgott-Roth says. "As recently as 1990, the U.S. was the world's No.1 producer of those minerals. Today, we are in seventh place. Even though we have vast mineral reserves worth trillions of dollars, we are now 100% dependent on imports for some 17 key minerals, and China is a significant source for many of those minerals," she says. Furchtgott-Roth explains how China "can go to Africa and purchase vast tracts of land in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example, where it can get out the cobalt," and that Beijing "doesn't have problems with using children to mine for these minerals or using slave labor in Xinjiang to mine for these minerals." "So, China has all kinds of business advantages that we in the United States do not have," she says. Furchtgott-Roth joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what the U.S. can do to have more influence in Africa, why the U.S. should be more active in reducing China's role in regard to African minerals, and the connection between "environmental, social, and governance" policies and China. Drug cartel activity and human smuggling have become tragically commonplace for many Texas communities. There is a “tremendous loss of life with the increase in crime” at the southern border, Buckingham says, adding, “We’re going to do everything we possibly can, but unfortunately it is sort of trying to trap water in a sieve. INTERVIEW | How This Group Is Stopping Woke Racism Through Legal Action
“The remedy for racism never is more racism.” That’s the guiding principle behind a new initiative called the Equal Protection Project. Through education, investigation, and litigation, the Equal Protection Project is working to expose instances of racism in America, such as a school district in Rhode Island that announced it was holding an event for non-white educators only. "I mean, racism's been around in various forms for a long time, but now it's done in the name of diversity, equity, and inclusion," says Bill Jacobson, founder and publisher of LegalInsurrection.com. That's a reference to the likes of Ibram X. Kendi, who in his book “How to Be an Antiracist” insists, “The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination. The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination.” Jacobson announced the launch of the Equal Protection Project on the Fox News Channel "Tucker Carlson Tonight" program on Thursday night. Jacobson joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how the Equal Protection Project is working to promote the “fair treatment of all persons without regard to race or ethnicity.” Find out more about the Equal Protection Project here: https://equalprotect.org/ Enjoy the show! INTERVIEW | New Axis of Evil Rising on First Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine?
Friday, Feb. 24, marks one year since Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives. Ahead of the one-year anniversary, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Wednesday with China's top diplomat, Wang Yi. Dakota Wood, a senior research fellow in defense programs at The Heritage Foundation's Center for National Defense, says the visit wasn't that "out of the ordinary, in terms of the relations that exist between various powers." (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) However, "the unusual part would be this very overt effort between China, [the] Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, to work more closely and overtly, very explicitly with Vladimir Putin, Moscow, Russia as a whole," Wood says. "So, is it an alliance? I don't know that. ... It's an alliance in practice, as opposed to some kind of a formal alliance that we saw in World War I, World War II amongst Axis powers." Wood adds: So, from the perspective of Moscow and Beijing, isn't it better to join forces in a sense such that together, operating in our own spheres, it causes more problems for the United States, who is increasingly unable to address two major competitors at the same time, keeping us off balance, dividing attention, and really putting a stressor on the resources we have available. Wood joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss reporting that the U.S. is increasing its troop presence in Taiwan, lessons from the war in Ukraine, and the potential for China to supply Russia with weaponry. INTERVIEW | 'Why We Have to Win This War' Against the 'Woke Army,' According to Asra Nomani
Asra Nomani, author of "Woke Army: The Red-Green Alliance That Is Destroying America’s Freedom" and co-founder of Save Merit, is emphasizing the necessity of "winning this war against the woke army." "It is not an exaggeration to say that the future of America depends on our winning this war against the woke army ... I wouldn't say that lightly except behind me, your listeners and you can't see it, but behind me, stacks of books in which I've been fighting this extremism within my Muslim community that is a national security threat. Right? We know this," Nomani says. "And then after that, I organized my books chronologically. That’s the OCD in me—’70s, ’80s, ’90s, filled with those books. And then I have my books on critical race theory and all this oppression studies and grievance studies, and then the indoctrination books for the kids," Nomani adds. "'Woke Baby,' 'A is for Activist,' 'ABCs' that have now become 'GayBCs.' Right? Indoctrination on every level of a child's identity. Nomani continues: And why do I know how serious this is? Because in that first part of my life as a warrior against extremism within my Muslim community, I know you've heard the term of madrasas, right? It's the term for those schools in which the jihadis would indoctrinate children. It's the public school system in nations like Pakistan and Afghanistan, and they would indoctrinate children from a young age.Where have we heard that again? The Cultural Revolution, of course. Entire nations' destinies have been defined by what we teach children, and that is exactly what it is at stake here, and that's why we have to win this war.Nomani joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the "war on merit," the potential short-term and long-term consequences of the war on merit, and her advice for any parents who want to get more involved with what is happening at their child's school. INTERVIEW | Supreme Court Hears Two Cases That Could Change Social Media Platforms Significantly
Social media companies might have to make significant changes to their platforms, depending on the outcomes of two Supreme Court cases. This week, the justices hear arguments in two cases that involve a federal law referred to as Section 230, which protects social media platforms from being held liable for the content users post. The high court heard arguments in Gonzalez v. Google LLC on Tuesday and will hear Twitter Inc. v. Taamneh on Wednesday. The rulings in these cases, expected sometime this summer, could affect how social media platforms operate. Under Section 230, platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are shielded from standards that, for example, newspapers are held to. While a news outlet can be sued for knowingly publishing false information, the same strict standards don’t apply to social media sites, due to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. But some argue that tech platforms should be held accountable for false or dangerous information shared on the platforms. The two cases being brought before the Supreme Court this week "should be a very interesting debate, and it may not be one that divides cleanly along ideological lines, like we typically think of them, between the conservative and more liberal justices," says Zack Smith, manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in The Heritage Foundation's Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Smith, who is also co-host of the "SCOTUS 101" podcast, joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how social media platforms could be affected by the cases being argued at the Supreme Court this week. INTERVIEW | How the Woke Agenda Unleashed Havoc in the Classroom, Teacher Daniel Buck Explains
Children are always going to misbehave, teacher Daniel Buck says, and that’s why discipline is needed in the classroom. "I think the idea that we're going to solve misbehavior is kind of Utopian," Buck says, adding that is "what the progressive idea is." "If we just get the system right, then kids are going to behave. And that's never going to happen," he says. Instead, Buck advocates for a strong disciplinary "system in place that anticipates and responds to misbehavior." The lack of such discipline in the classroom is leading some teachers to resign and harming students' ability to learn, says Buck, the author of “What Is Wrong With Our Schools?: The Ideology Impoverishing Education in America and How We Can Do Better for Our Students." The book was published in December. Buck joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how the agenda of the woke Left has led to a lack of discipline in American classrooms, and why a restoration of discipline would improve learning outcomes for students. INTERVIEW | Victoria Coates on Putin’s Spring Offensive, Russian ‘Reeducation’ Camps, and What’s Next for War in Ukraine
Next Friday will mark one year since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a war against Ukraine, a war that many anticipated would end in a matter of days after the invasion. Yet, Ukraine, with the support of America and its European allies, has succeeded in significantly weakening Russia and preventing its victory. For Putin, the current military campaign in Ukraine is "one of greatly reduced expectations," Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation, says. "He has gone from wanting to capture the entire country to just trying to capture some small chunks of eastern Ukraine, so that is in and of itself something of a victory, for a starter." Although U.S. support for Ukraine is necessary, Coates says, the Biden administration owes it to the Americans to ensure that the billions of dollars in aid sent to Ukraine is being used as intended, and that a plan exists for how the U.S. will provide assistance moving forward. Coates joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the situation on the ground in Ukraine, how long the war that began last Feb. 24 likely will go on, and reports of Russia's stealing Ukrainian children and placing them in “reeducation camps.” Enjoy the show. INTERVIEW | America's Outpost in Washington Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary
The Heritage Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary Thursday, and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts is reflecting on the leading conservative think tank's success over the past five decades. "There are a lot of ways I would put that, but I think most succinctly it would be [that] Heritage has always been willing without fail to state the truth, even in those times when stating the truth comes with some risk," Roberts says on today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast." "In other words, ... often stating the truth about fiscal restraint or the lack thereof, stating the truth about America's social and cultural weakness, stating the truth about violating federalism," he says. Roberts became president of The Heritage Foundation in October 2021 after serving for five years as president and CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation in Austin, Texas. (The Daily Signal is Heritage's multimedia news organization.) Roberts joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss Heritage's success since its founding in 1973, what he hopes to see the think tank accomplish over the next five decades, and how he, as Heritage president, is working to build the think tank's role in the conservative movement as America's outpost in Washington. INTERVIEW | Mom Suparna Dutta on Being Booted From Education Board, Called ‘White Supremacist’ After Defending Constitution
Suparna Dutta says she thought the exceptional nature of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence “was common sense,” but her recent experience with the Virginia Board of Education proved otherwise. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin appointed Dutta—a mother, engineer, and Indian immigrant—to the Virginia Board of Education in July. “I was thrilled and very honored to be appointed by him as a voice of parent advocacy to the board,” Dutta says. But the Virginia state Senate blocked Dutta’s appointment to the board just one week after she defended the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and criticized socialism and communism during a board meeting. She was even accused of being "aligned with white supremacists" for her views on America's founding documents. The Privileges and Elections Committee of the state Senate originally voted to confirm Dutta to the Virginia Board of Education, but after she defended the founding documents, Democratic state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi introduced an amendment to remove Dutta from the board. “I do believe that the founding of this nation was something remarkable,” Dutta says, adding that “the documents that were drawn up, starting with the Declaration of Independence and then the Constitution, first and foremost, put the unalienable rights and our individual freedom first and foremost.” Dutta joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share her story of being kept off the Virginia Board of Education, and to explain the ways in which woke ideology has influenced school boards and education across the country. INTERVIEW | Defense Expert Provides Chilling Insight Into US-China Relations
More than three decades ago, the U.S. faced the threat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Now, the U.S. might be facing a situation with China that could be more dangerous than at any moment in the Cold War, in the wake of the shooting down Feb. 4 of a Chinese spy balloon after it flew over U.S. territory. “Well, one of the more concerning reports out of this whole thing is the fact that the Pentagon rang up their buddies over in China, a hotline, and said, ‘We’re concerned about this thing, whatever it is,’ and nobody on the Chinese side answered the phone,” Dakota Wood, senior research fellow in defense programs in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, says on today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “So, even during the heights of the Cold War, our U.S. Pentagon and their counterparts in the Soviet Union would at least keep these communication lines open. We’ve got communication lines with Russia as it continues to be involved in the war in Syria,” Wood says. “So, the ability to talk to each other really helps to mitigate the risk of misinterpreting something or a road to war or something along those lines.” Wood joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Chinese spy balloon, whether we are seeing heightened aggression from China, and how the downed spy balloon compares with the three other downed aerial objects since. INTERVIEW | How Ancient Wisdom Can Help Us Tackle Today's Crises
What can ancient wisdom teach us about today's crises? According to Spencer Klavan, author of "How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises," it can teach us a lot. "Whenever you call a book something like 'How to Save the West,' you have a certain imposter syndrome, or it's impossible not to feel a kind of trepidation, but that's actually why I wrote the book in a certain sense, that feeling of just overwhelm and despair that I think we all can relate to," Klavan, associate editor at the Claremont Institute, says on today's podcast. Klavan adds: What's the role of a human being? What's our place in the universe? What is good and what is evil? Those sorts of questions actually are human-sized.And so I wanted to give people just a taste of some of the wisdom that we can get if we access these great texts and incorporate their wisdom into our lives, because we think of these things as kind of inaccessible or beyond us, but actually they're there for you, and the book is designed to equip you with some of that. Klavan joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his new book, what he thinks the West needs to be saved from, and what he views as the biggest threat to the West. Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott Explains How Cartels Control Southern Border
Whether it's a family or a single male, the drug cartels play a role in every illegal crossing into the U.S. at the southern border, former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott says. “They're either directly paying the cartels or the cartels are controlling their movements for another benefit, meaning to systematically overwhelm Border Patrol, create a gap in the border security, and then bring the narcotics across,” Scott says. Scott, who worked in U.S. Customs and Border Protection for three decades, served as the 24th chief of the Border Patrol from Jan. 24, 2020, until Aug. 14, 2021. Through his decades of work on the border, Scott says, he observed that “every single day, almost without exception until January of 2021 [when President Joe Biden took office], the border was getting more and more secure.” The cartels are taking advantage of the Biden administration’s border policies, Scott says, explaining that because most illegal aliens coming across the border are released into the U.S. interior, the cartels “push [asylum-seekers] all across at the same time.” The result, he says, is that “it overwhelms all the law enforcement resources so that [the cartels] can push a second wave through, commonly referred to nowadays as 'gotaways.'" The gotaways tend to be individuals who are "willing to pay more to not encounter a law enforcement officer,” Scott says, adding, “That's where most of the narcotics [are]. That's where most of the criminal aliens are.” Scott joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the long-term implications of Biden’s border policies and why Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is allowing the crisis to continue at the southern border. INTERVIEW | Former Acting Defense Secretary Doesn’t Think China Would Have Flown Balloon Under Trump
U.S. officials revealed a week ago, on Feb. 2, that a Chinese surveillance balloon was flying over the country. Two days later, on Feb. 4, an American fighter jet shot down the spy balloon with a missile. Chris Miller, acting defense secretary under President Donald Trump, weighs in on the Biden administration’s decision to shoot down China’s balloon and whether he would have handled the situation differently. “That goes back to when was it identified and when did our sensors pick up that,” Miller says of the spy balloon on “The Daily Signal Podcast,” adding: “I was a bad map reader, and people that worked with me in the military will attest to that. But I did look at the track of the balloon, and when it came over the Aleutian Islands [off Alaska], there was a lot of blue space.” “There was a lot of doggone ocean where something could have been done,” he says. “I’ve heard that whole [Biden administration] justification: ‘Well, we didn’t want to knock it down because it would’ve fallen on somebody. Could have injured somebody or killed somebody.’ I mean, that’s a valid request.” Miller adds: Let me give you this one, Samantha: You spent a trillion dollars, $850 billion, [on] defense and we did not have the capability to take control of that doggone balloon and bring it down on our own terms without having to send up a hundred-million-dollar fighter aircraft to shoot a $400,000 Sidewinder missile? On the podcast, Miller discusses some of Biden’s comments on China during his State of the Union address Tuesday night, his thoughts on how the Biden administration responded to the Chinese spy balloon, and his new book “Soldier Secretary: Warnings from the Battlefield and the Pentagon About America’s Most Dangerous Enemies.” Hosted on Acast. INTERVIEW | Here's What Grade Rep. Elise Stefanik Gives Biden After 2 Years as President
President Joe Biden on Tuesday night will deliver his second official State of the Union address since being sworn into office Jan. 20, 2021. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., the No. 3 House Republican, says the president doesn't have anything to brag about in the speech to a joint session of Congress at the midpoint of his four-year term. "I think the president has caused significant crises in this country, whether you look at the border crisis, the economic crisis, the inflation crisis, or the constitutional crisis," Stefanik, chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, says. "What House Republicans are focused on is our commitment to America, our legislative agenda that we have already hit the ground running to pass on behalf of the American people, standing up for an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future that's built upon freedom, and a government that's accountable," Stefanik says. "So, I hope to hear a lot from the president, but I think he's going to double down on the far-Left, failed policies that have been really hurting hardworking American families." Stefanik joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how she would grade Biden's first two years in office, what to expect from congressional Republicans and GOP leadership in oversight of the Biden administration, and what she views as the biggest threat from the Chinese Communist Party. Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., also joins the podcast to discuss what she thinks Biden has to brag about during his State of the Union address, Biden's self-inflicted immigration crisis, and whether House Republicans will impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the situation at the southern border.
