Baroness Caroline Cox has a long history of service in public office, but her passion for justice has led her not only to Great Britain’s House of Lords but to war-torn, poverty-stricken nations around the world. “The mission is to work for people who are suffering oppression and persecution in areas which are largely unreached by the major aid organizations like the [United Nations],” Cox says of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, which she leads. Cox, who joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast,” says her organization intentionally goes where others can’t because the U.N., for example, “can only go places with permission of a sovereign government.” The work is “risky” but also a “privilege,” says Cox, who is an independent member of the House of Lords who served as deputy speaker there from 1985 to 2005. “The majority we work with happen to be Christians because Christians are suffering a lot of persecution around the world today,” Cox says. The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust also works with Muslims who are suffering in Sudan’s Blue Nile State, as well as with Buddhists in Myanmar (formerly Burma), she notes. On the podcast, Cox also talks about her fight for the rights of Muslim women who are forced to live under Sharia law in the United Kingdom, as well as her advocacy work for persecuted religious groups across the globe. "It's also been an occasion for the accumulation of power, mostly by the executive branch of government," he says. In his new book "The New Abnormal: The Rise of the Biomedical Security State,” Kheriaty details the ways in which governments past and present have used public health crises to gain power. In many homes across the country, it’s not Christmas without sitting down to watch an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol." But according to Hillsdale College professor of English Dwight Lindley, many of the film versions fail to relay the full, rich message Dickens sought to portray in the 1843 novel. “A Christmas Carol” is “actually about the incarnation of Christ,” Lindley says. Dickens, according to Lindley, takes Scrooge on a journey of becoming more childlike so that he can come to a place “where he can meet God.” The story intends to call to mind the biblical passage in Mark 9 that says, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me, but the one who sent me.” Lindley explains that the invitation in the novel is for Scrooge to receive Tiny Tim, and in so doing, receive Christ. Home. For all of us, the word brings images to mind. Home is meant to be a place of comfort and safety, but for some women facing unplanned pregnancies, this isn't the case. And that's why St. Gianna and Pietro Molla Home in Warsaw, North Dakota, exists. “There are so many people who really are alone in the world who might not, in North Dakota, be on the streets homeless, but maybe they're living coach the coach,” says Mary Pat Jahner, director of the North Dakota home. “Maybe they have family, but ... there would not be a means for gas money to [go to] an appointment or to get a car seat or things like that. So, you know, those are the people that we serve, the people who are alone in the world,” Jahner, founder of the St. Gianna and Pietro Molla Home, explains. For 20 years, the large residence has provided expectant and new mothers with a place not only to find safety and provision, but also community and the love of Christ during and after their pregnancies. “We live as a family,” Jahner says of the home for mothers. “We just have a few moms at a time and give them as much love during their time here as we can.” Jahner joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share the mission of the St. Gianna and Pietro Molla Home, as well as stories of the women who have found refuge at the home over the years. The agricultural Israeli community of Ein HaBesor experienced a miracle on Oct. 7. Located just 3 miles from the border with Gaza and home to 320 families, the people of Ein HaBesor were targeted by Hamas terrorists just like so many other communities along the border that day. But miraculously, not a single person from Ein HaBesor was killed or taken hostage. The community had shortly beforehand activated its security team after some theft, which unknowingly prepared them for the events on Oct. 7, as they successfully fought off the terrorists. But the people of Ein HaBesor have been evacuated from their homes because the community is in a war zone. About 60% of Israel's produce comes from the region, and without hands to care for and harvest the crops, all of Israel stands to be affected. CityServe International, a nonprofit aid organization, is stepping in to help Ein HaBesor in an effort to ensure that more than half of Israel’s produce is not lost, and is inviting churches across America to join its efforts. “Most people going to Israel that are of the Christian faith, they go there to take from Israel,” says Todd Lamphere, vice president of government relations at CityServe. “I don't mean that in a bad way. I just simply mean that they're there to look at the sites, to see where Jesus died, where He was buried, where He was baptized, to get baptized in the Jordan, to do all of those things.” “What we're saying is, let's continue to do those, but let's take three or four or five days, and let's go to the fields, and let's serve the nation of Israel by helping them harvest their crops,” he said. A Pennsylvania Moms for Liberty leader will file defamation lawsuits to restore her good name after she was falsely accused of harassment in what she calls an orchestrated smear campaign. Nicole Marie Prussman, chairwoman of the Monroe County, Pennsylvania, chapter of the parental rights group, received a citation for harassment in April, after news reports of the charge came out in March. Although a magistrate court judge initially found Prussman guilty without a proper fair trial, the case was dismissed on appeal when the state ruled that Prussman's accuser failed to corroborate her alleged evidence. Yet the news outlets that reported the charges against Prussman have not reported her acquittal. Now, the Coalition for Liberty, a nonprofit dedicated to combating cancel culture, will represent her in court as she goes on the offensive. The Coalition for Liberty has not clarified which individuals or entities it plans to sue on Prussman's behalf, but it has vowed to bring litigation against anyone who broke the law in defaming her. Prussman became the target of "a very organized hit job by a group called Stop Moms for Liberty," Doug Turpin, president and board chair of Coalition for Liberty, told "The Daily Signal Podcast." "They planned this. You can even see online how they were getting their members to plot to file harassment charges against Moms for Liberty all across the country. This was a deliberate attempt to cancel Nicole [Prussman] simply because she was speaking out on behalf of children because of inappropriate and highly sexual content." Enjoy the show! History and civics education in America is languishing. A troubling number of Americans can't even pass a U.S. citizenship test. Pioneer Institute's recent poll findings on the topic are "pretty sobering,” explains Chris Sinacola, the organization's director of communications and media relations. The Pioneer Institute, a think tank based in Massachusetts, offers solutions for how schools and educators can ignite a passion for American history and solve the civics crisis facing the country in a new book, “Restoring the City on a Hill: U.S. History & Civics in America's Schools.” In Pioneer's poll, Massachusetts residents were asked questions drawn from the citizenship test. The questions were about “things that new citizens, or aspiring U.S. citizens, need to know and they need to get 60% to pass,” Sinacola says, adding that “the average score among our citizens was 63%." "So you can say, 'Yay, we passed, we can all remain citizens,'” he says, but it is a bit of an “indictment” when some Americans don’t know how long a U.S. senator's term is or even how many members the Senate has. “It's a bit of a warning sign,” Sinacola says. David Newman sent a text to a friend the morning of Oct. 7. Something terrible had happened. Word quickly spread among Newman’s group of friends, who had known each other since high school. Newman had traveled to the music festival close to the border of Gaza on Friday night. It was supposed to be a fun weekend with his girlfriend “celebrating life,” something Newman was very good at and loved to do, according to friend Gidon Hazony. Hazony later learned that Hamas had murdered Newman, 25, on Oct. 7, but not before saving nearly 300 lives, including the life of his girlfriend. Newman’s actions that day, and the atrocities Hazony and so many in Israel witnessed on Oct. 7, led Hazony, David Gani, and several of their friends to quit their jobs and start a nonprofit called Soldiers Saves Lives. The organization is working to collect tactical and humanitarian aid for Israel Defense Forces. According to the group’s website, they have supplied more than 20 “IDF units and civilian response teams with protective and self-defense gear.” Gani, who serves as board chair and CFO/CTO of Soldiers Save Lives, and Hazony, president of the organization, recently traveled to Washington D.C. to raise support and awareness for their mission to provide IDF soldiers with needed supplies. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre doesn’t often call on James Rosen to ask questions at her briefings. But when Newsmax’s chief White House correspondent gets an opportunity, he makes the most of it. “If you can do it well, you can make news,” Rosen explained to “The Daily Signal Podcast.” The veteran reporter, who got his start in local news before becoming a national correspondent, has covered his share of Washington, D.C., press conferences—from the State Department to Congress and now the White House. No generation struggles with mental health more than Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012. Only 41% of Gen Z respondents said they're "thriving" in a Gallup and Walton Family Foundation poll released earlier this year and reported by CNN, but 60% of millennials surveyed said they were thriving when asked at the same age. When questioned about their mental health and well-being, only 20 in every 100 Gen Zers say it is excellent. Clinical psychologist Chloe Carmichael says Gen Zers' mental health issues likely stem from multiple factors, such as “false social standards that social media creates [and] the stifling of free speech." About the latter, Carmichael says that "as a clinical psychologist, I believe freedom of expression and being able to verbalize your thoughts is really good for your mental health.” The psychologist also points to “a decline in religiosity” among the young generation as a reason for growing depression and anxiety, as well as the extended period of social distancing and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Carmichael joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the factors that led to today's mental health crisis and what can be done to address such underlying causes. The history of Hanukkah traces back to a military victory for the Jewish people over their enemies more than 2,000 years ago. The Jews defeated the Greek army in the Maccabean Revolt, making way for the Jewish people to also rededicate the temple in Jerusalem to God. The victory celebrated on “Hanukkah is twofold,” Rabbi Pinchas Taylor says. “On the one hand, it celebrates a military victory, but perhaps [the] even more important victory was this ideological victory, the spiritual victory of faith over nature, of the godly worldview over the Greek natural worldview,” says Taylor, an author, speaker, and faith leader. In the aftermath of Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7, the rabbi says the message of Hanukkah is a powerful reminder that light does win over darkness. The fourth, and perhaps final, Republican presidential primary debate as four candidates met Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Once again, GOP front-runner Donald Trump declined to appear. Sarah Feldpausch, director of government relations at Heritage Action for America, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the biggest hits and misses of this fourth debate. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation, whose grassroots advocacy arm is Heritage Action.) Gathered without Trump at the University of Alabama were Florida Gov. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, who didn't meet qualification tests for the third debate, announced Monday that he is suspending his campaign. Trump chose to skip the fourth debate as he did the preceding ones, instead participating Tuesday night in a live "town hall" meeting hosted by Fox News host Sean Hannity in Davenport, Iowa. Heather Lawless came close to never existing on this earth. Due to her mother's medical condition, Lawless’ mom was advised by her physicians and her family to have an abortion. “There was an abortion appointment made, and she didn't show up to it,” Lawless said of her mom, adding, “She chose life for me, and I was able to experience the life that I have now.” When Lawless had an unplanned pregnancy herself, she chose life, and years later when her daughter found herself unexpectedly pregnant, Lawless supported her as her daughter chose life as well. Her mother’s story and her own are “the main reasons why I started Reliance, why I do what I do,” Lawless said. She founded Reliance Ministries and the Reliance Center in Idaho to serve women facing unplanned pregnancies. “We have a four-part model that includes a holistic reproductive health clinic and a men's program, a maternity home and a coffee shop,” Lawless explains. “We wanted to figure out whatever the barrier was to life and remove the barrier,” she explains, adding that, for example, “if a woman wants to choose abortion because she doesn't have a place to live, we want to give her a place to live.” Whether the obstacle to choosing life is housing, health care, finances, or an abusive relationship, Lawless says she and her team at Reliance Ministries seek to eliminate and overcome the barrier for the mother so she is free to choose life. Dec. 7 will mark two months since Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 others hostage. Fighting between Hamas and Israel resumed Friday after the release of about 100 hostages during a weeklong cease-fire. As Israeli troops advance in Gaza, they are “constricting the size of ground they don’t control,” defense expert Robert Greenway says of the Israel Defense Forces. Israel is now advancing to conduct military operations in southern Gaza in addition to the north, and Greenway, director of the Center for National Defense at The Heritage Foundation, says that’s necessary because “you can’t have a sanctuary” region where terrorists can remain. After filing a lawsuit, a Catholic community of sisters in New York has won a victory for life and for privacy. In June 2022, New York passed a law allowing state officials to access pro-life pregnancy resource centers' sensitive information. The state Department of Health was granted permission to investigate pro-life pregnancy centers via demanding access to information about the centers’ policies. The law was immediately concerning to the Sisters of Life because “It's so important that they feel safe,” Sister Maris Stella says, referring to the women they serve. Stella, vicar general of the Sisters of Life, says the community of nuns is dedicated to serving women facing unplanned pregnancies, and part of that service often involves having “sacred conversations with them, and we come to know their history, their hopes, their fears, their dreams.” To protect the nuns' privacy and the privacy of the women they serve, the Sisters filed a lawsuit asking a federal court for an order to protect them from government investigation. In November, New York agreed to comply with the federal court order. Stella joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" with Mark Rienzi, president and CEO of Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which litigated the case on the sisters' behalf, to discuss the legal victory. Jonathan Skrmetti, the Republican attorney general of Tennessee, has pledged that he will sue the Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden if it finalizes a rule forcing gender ideology on foster parents. Skrmetti laid out the legal arguments against the rule in a conversation Wednesday with "The Daily Signal Podcast." "This is a federal agency making law, treading on both the prerogatives of Congress and really the prerogatives of the state legislatures," Skrmetti said. "Family law has always been a state issue," he explained. "The states have developed a rich body of family law dealing with issues like foster care. This is a really heavy-handed intrusion by the federal government in pursuit of a political end but at the expense of kids. So constitutionally, there's a structural problem with a federal agency making law in an area where the states should be making the law and where the states have been making the law." HHS’ Administration for Children and Families proposed a new rule Sept. 28 on “Safe and Appropriate Foster Care Placement Requirements” and allowed Americans to submit public comments by Nov. 27. "Authentic" is Merriam-Webster’s word of the year. It’s also a good way to describe Fox News contributor and podcast host Lisa Boothe, whose own authenticity is evident whenever she’s on TV or interviewing guests for her show, “The Truth With Lisa Boothe.” During her frequent Fox News appearances—or stints guest-hosting for Fox anchors such as Laura Ingraham—Boothe brings a straightforward, commonsense approach to viewers. She spoke with The Daily Signal about the opportunity that led her from Capitol Hill to the media world—and why she believes so many outlets are falling out of favor today. “I feel like we’ve just lost common sense, period,” Boothe says. “I think we’re a society, and it extends to the media as well, of cowardice, a lack of common sense, probably just intentional lying, and just no morality. There’s no wrong vs. right anymore.” Hamas’ barbaric attack on Israel—and the surge of antisemitism that followed—are just one example Boothe cites as a failure of the news media to distinguish wrong from right. “Imagine how insanely frustrating it would be to be Israel. You have the most Jews slaughtered in a single day since the Holocaust, you have babies that were beheaded, you have women who are raped next to the bodies of their dead friends at a concert, completely unarmed,” Boothe said. “Just complete, utter atrocities, right? And then you have the media questioning what happened that day, questioning the beheading of babies.” Israel, she said, was so compelled to counter pro-Palestinian propaganda that it invited journalists—including The Daily Signal—to view 43 minutes of video depicting Hamas terrorists' brutal atrocities. “Israel has to confirm things that these Hamas terrorists videotaped themselves and put out to the public, but then the media’s just pushing out Hamas propaganda without question,” Boothe said. “I mean, it’s just disgusting.” Boothe said she felt a similar frustration during the COVID-19 hysteria that consumed the country beginning in 2020. From the start, she thought the government reaction was overblown—from widespread lockdowns to vaccine mandates. As a result, she started her own podcast to offer a countervailing narrative. “I believe I was the first person at Fox to come out and say, ‘I’m not getting the vaccine,’” Boothe said. “I just got frustrated that I didn’t have my own outlet to have these conversations, and interview these types of people, and to have that space of exploring this other side. [It] ended up being the right side, but not at the time—it was very dangerous.” Today, Boothe’s show features a mix of political and cultural warriors who offer a different perspective from what you’ll hear from legacy media outlets. Baroness Caroline Cox has a long history of service in public office, but her passion for justice has led her not only to Great Britain's House of Lords but to war-torn, poverty-stricken nations around the world. “The mission is to work for people who are suffering oppression and persecution in areas which are largely unreached by the major aid organizations like the [United Nations],” Cox says of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, which she leads. Cox, who joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast,” says her organization intentionally goes where others can’t because the U.N., for example, “can only go places with permission of a sovereign government.” The work is “risky” but also a “privilege,” says Cox, who is an independent member of the House of Lords who served as deputy speaker there from 1985 to 2005. “The majority we work with happen to be Christians because Christians are suffering a lot of persecution around the world today,” Cox says. The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust also works with Muslims who are suffering in Sudan's Blue Nile State, as well as with Buddhists in Myanmar (formerly Burma), she notes. Harrison Tinsley’s son, Sawyer, will turn 4 in December. He likes to play hockey and football with his dad and also enjoys singing. According to his father, Sawyer is a happy little boy, but the child’s mother is attempting to raise him not as a boy, or as a girl, but nonbinary. A couple of years ago, former Vice President Mike Pence says a good friend of his said he was curious how Pence managed to have a wonderful family while also maintaining a demanding political career. That conversation became the genesis for Pence’s new book, "Go Home for Dinner: Advice on How Faith Makes a Family and Family Makes a Life." The book, which Pence co-authored with his daughter, Charlotte Pence Bond, describes what life was like for the Pence children as they grew up, and how their father lived out his commitment to his family. “I've never had to be motivated to work hard,” Pence said during an interview on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “I am always motivated to try and make a difference in the world for the values that I believe in," Pence says.
