Andrew Biggio was excited to show his neighbor, a WWII veteran, the M1 Garand rifle he had recently purchased. The weapon was the most common rifle used in WWII, and Biggio thought his elderly neighbor would appreciate holding the gun. “When I put that rifle into his hands and he raised it into his shoulder and started waving it around the room and pointing and smiling, and we talked about the Battle of Okinawa for like three hours,” Biggio, a Marine veteran himself, recounts. Biggio was in awe of the stories his elderly neighbor had just shared with him. The rifle had not only triggered memories in the veteran's mind, but acted like a microphone, propelling the man to describe his war experiences in detail. Biggio asked his neighbor to sign the rifle becasue he wanted to remember the stories he had just been told, and this gave Biggio the idea to find other WWII veterans and ask them to sign the M1 Garand rifle. Today, “I have 320 names on that rifle,” Biggio says. “You can't even see the wooden stock. The whole rifle's full of white ink names.” But the majority of the soldiers who have held the rifle have done much more than signed it, they described their war stories in detail while grasping the weapon, stories which Biggio has compiled into two book. His first book, “The Rifle: Combat Stories from America's Last WWII Veterans, Told Through an M1 Garand,” was released in 2021 but could not hold all veteran stories. In September, Biggio released the project’s second edition, “The Rifle 2: Back to the Battlefield.” Biggio joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share some of the stories of the WWII veterans he has had the privilege of meeting and writing about. Parents should have the right to know what their children are being taught in school and to have their voices heard when they have concerns. That’s why Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La., introduced the Parents Bill of Rights. “It's actually appalling to me ... that we have to have a Parents Bill of Rights, but in today's age, it's absolutely necessary, because parents always deserve a seat at the table when it comes to their child's education,” Letlow says. The House passed the bill in March without a single Democrat supporting the measure. The Senate has yet to bring the Parents Bill of Rights to the floor for a vote. “I know there's been some interest from my Senate colleagues on the other side, but I'm hopeful that one of them will come forward and take it up,” Letlow says. Patrick Ruffini is a Republican pollster with a reputation for deciphering data and spotting trends. His new book, “Party of the People: Inside the Multiracial Populist Coalition Remaking the GOP,” takes a deep dive into one of the biggest political realignments of our lifetime. Ruffini spoke with The Daily Signal about the demographic changes that are rapidly transforming America’s two biggest political parties—and what it means for the 2024 presidential election and beyond. “When I first started in politics, Republicans had this reputation as being the country club party,” Ruffini said. “Democrats had this reputation as being the party of the people, the party of the working class.” He added, “Flash forward almost 20 years, and that trend has completely almost reversed.” Recent election results show the GOP’s gains with working-class voters were not an aberration or confined to one candidate. Republicans today are increasing their support among non-college voters—the type of working-class American who once loyally supported Democrats. “The parties used to be defined by income and now they’re defined by education,” Ruffini said. “I argue that that's good news for Republicans in the sense that you have many more working-class, non-college voters in the country than you have college-educated voters.” The breakdown for 2024, according to Ruffini, is about 60% non-college voters compared to 40% who have a college degree. This, he surmises, will provide the GOP with an advantage in upcoming elections. Factor in Republican gains with Hispanic and black voters, and you have a different GOP than the one of yesteryear. Most surprising to Ruffini, however, is how the political alignment happened. “I did not expect Donald Trump to be the one who was able to pull this off, but my credit goes to him for getting us to this point,” Ruffini said. “The fact that he was able to expand the Republican coalition first to include the Rust Belt states and dramatically expand Republican performance among working-class voters in 2016, and then in 2020, almost defying the odds and winning re-election with the help of more Hispanic voters and continued progress among black voters,” he added. “It really has upended what we think the two parties are about.” Ruffini began writing “Party of the People” after observing the trends of the 2020 election, and he hopes it serves as a helpful guide for readers to understand the realignment. As the war between Israel and Hamas rages on, Jake Denton, research associate for The Heritage Foundation’s Tech Policy Center, breaks down what the role of artificial intelligence has been in the conflict. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “I think the one that everyone jumps to is the [artificial intelligence]-generated content, deepfakes, things of that nature,” Denton says. “There’s a few stories of synthetic audio recordings of a general saying that an attack’s coming or those types of things that we’ve even seen in the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” Denon says. “They go around on Telegram or WhatsApp.” “They’re taken as fact because they sound really convincing. You add some background noise, and suddenly it’s like a whole production in an audio file,” Denton adds. “And typically, what you’re picking up on in a video is like the lips don’t sync, and so you know the audio is fake. When it’s an audio file, how do you even tell?” Denton also highlights social media platforms such as the Chinese-owned app, TikTok. “And so, what you’re seeing right now, especially on platforms like TikTok, is they’re just promoting things that are either fake or actual real synthetic media, like a true deepfake from the ground up and altered video, altered audio, all these things are getting promoted,” Denton says, adding: And kids, at no fault of their own, are consuming this stuff, and they’re taking as fact. Dinesh D‘Souza’s newest film, “Police State,” chronicles the real-life stories of everyday Americans who have endured the wrath of a weaponized government and of the whistleblowers who are exposing its abuse of power. The U.N. General Assembly called Friday for a “humanitarian truce” between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers, but a cease-fire isn't an option for the Jewish nation, activist Boris Zilberman says. Since she began serving on her local school board in Arizona in January, Heather Rooks has made it a practice to begin her meeting comments by reading a Scripture verse she found encouraging. Rooks says citing Scriptures such as Isaiah 41:10—“Do not fear for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God”—served as an inspiration to her. “I continued to do it, because it really gave me a lot of strength and courage, and just really brought me peace while I'm up there making those big decisions when it comes to children,” she says. But it did not take long before the mother of four was told she had to stop the practice. Rooks' Scripture reading drew objection from inside and even outside the school district, and she received a “cease and desist” letter from a secular organization that told her she had to stop her practice because it violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. After receiving the letter, Rooks contacted First Liberty Institute, a Texas-based conservative law firm specializing in religious freedom. Rooks’ actions are “clearly within the framework of legislative acknowledgements of religion,” says Hiram Sasser, Rooks' attorney. Of behalf of Rooks, First Liberty Institute has served the Peoria Unified School District in Glendale, Arizona, with a lawsuit holding that it's within the school board member's rights to read Scripture at the meetings. Snowboarding coach David Bloch was fired after acknowledging biological differences exist between men and women. Bloch worked as a coach at Woodstock Union High School in Woodstock, Vermont, for 12 years and says he loved being in the snow and watching the kids he coached grow. “I think it's so incredible to watch the progress,” Bloch said, adding that he loves watching students “sit on top of a giant slalom course for the first time, and you can see the fear in their eyes, and then by the time they make it down, it's like I wrote them a check for a million dollars.” During a competition in February, Bloch overheard some of his students discussing the issue of men competing in women’s sports. The coach joined the conversation and acknowledged that biological differences exist between men and women, and that generally males do have a competitive advantage against females, given the physiological differences between the sexes. The next day, the schools superintendent of Windsor Central Supervisory Union called Bloch into her office and terminated him for the comments he made the day prior. “I was just shocked that I could be fired for literally speaking biological fact,” Bloch says. There are growing concerns over who is crossing America’s border with Mexico in light of the war between Hamas and Israel. “This is absolutely a concern,” Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham says of the threat of terrorists taking advantage of the lack of security along America’s southern border. “We are seeing over 200 people on the terrorist Most Wanted List that we have caught alone this year,” according to Buckingham, adding that “we are exceeding six year cumulative records for people coming from countries that sponsor terrorism. This has always been our concern from day one. It is why you need a secure border.” Buckingham’s joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the security concerns at the border following a memo from Customs and Border Protection’s San Diego Field Office warning of Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine attempting to cross the border. The San Diego unit “assesses that individuals inspired by, or reacting to, the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt travel to or from the area of hostilities in the Middle East via circuitous transit across the southwest border,” according to the memo, which was first reported Monday by the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Foreign fighters motivated by ideology or mercenary soldiers of fortune may attempt to obfuscate travel to or from the U.S. to or from countries in the Middle East through Mexico,” that CBP memo says. West Virginia is feeling the worst effects of illicit fentanyl flowing across America’s southern border, according to state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. “Average” is not the adjective that comes to mind when talking about an American who took a religious freedom case all the way to the Supreme Court, but football coach Joe Kennedy says he identified with the word. “I’ve always looked at myself actually [as] below average,” Kennedy says. “I really had no idea that God was going to take my life in this way, in this path.” In his new book, “Average Joe: The Coach Joe Kennedy Story,” Kennedy explains how his simple commitment to God to take a knee in silent prayer on the 50-yard line after the high school football games he coached landed him at the center of one of the largest religious freedom cases in recent history, Kennedy v. For Rabbi Scott Kahn, Oct. 7 was a holy day, the Sabbath. He went to an early morning service at his synagogue and standing outside for a moment, he saw something strange. “We suddenly heard booms overhead in our city of Ramat Beit Shemesh. So we looked up, and we saw smoke just randomly. It wasn’t a plane. It was just like bursts of smoke,” he tells The Daily Signal. Soon, he heard about how his loved ones were affected, including his son-in-law in the army reserves, who was called up to serve near Gaza. Kahn heard about one distant family member who was shot, but who had survived by hiding in a ditch. “Israel is a country who cherishes life,” Yael Eckstein says, “and our enemies know that." Those enemies use that fact as a tool against Israel, adds Eckstein, president and CEO of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, who is today's guest on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Field reporter and former U.S. Marine Julio Rosas, who has been in Israel since Wednesday, is sharing details from the ground as the war between Hamas and Israel continues. "Just before I signed on to join this podcast, there was—I got alerts on my phone that there were rockets being launched further to the south of us, and so that is currently the biggest threat," said Rosas, author of "Fiery But Mostly Peaceful: The 2020 Riots and the Gaslighting of America," as he joined us for an interview on "The Daily Signal Podcast." "Also, there are some infiltrations attempts still being made, not obviously on [as] big of a scale as the initial attacks, but this is still—it's a pretty active area," said Rosas. Rosas was in Sderot, Israel, at the time of the interview. "The more north you go in Tel Aviv, which is where most of the flights go into right now, things are kind of normal. I would say that not as many businesses are open during normal hours," added Rosas. "And also just the fact, again, rockets get fired all the way as far north over there." Rosas, who said he was also in Northern Israel, shared that "[i]t's kind of the same story where the towns along the Lebanese border have been evacuated." Rosas continued: There's not that many people there left, and it's concerning because there's still a lot of kind of minimal fighting between the [Israel Defense Forces] and Lebanese and Hezbollah kind of back and forth.So that's one of the reasons why Israel hasn't gone fully into Gaza yet, is because they want to make sure that their northern and eastern regions are prepared for any response that they make here down south. As the war between Hamas and Israel continues, President Joe Biden is set to visit Israel on Wednesday following an invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday. “I think it’s important for any American president to show support for, and solidarity with, Israel in its darkest hour. I mean, this is the darkest day in Israeli history,” Nathan Sales, former ambassador-at-large and coordinator for counterterrorism at the State Department, said prior to Biden’s trip being confirmed. “In the 75 years that the state of Israel has existed, we’ve never seen bloodshed and violence like this.” “In fact, it’s the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust,” said Sales, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. “Think about that. America needs to stand by our ally, our closest ally in the region and the only democracy in the region.” Politico reported Sunday that Biden could travel to the war-torn country “as early as this week.” “I think what I would like to hear from President Biden when he goes to Israel is ‘We’re going to change course on Iran. We are going to not just go after the tentacles of the octopus, the terrorist groups in Lebanon, the terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip,'” Sales said, continuing to cite what he thinks the president should say: “We’re going to go after the head, the masters of this entire strategy. A freelance writer and editor is speaking out about the negative effects of a recent California law, saying she questioned how she was “going to survive” after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, known as AB 5. “The law ... was signed … on Sept. 18, 2019, and when I woke up that morning and I read about it, you know, the next day, I thought, ‘This is going to be an existential threat to my career,'” recalls Karen Anderson, founder of Freelancers Against AB5, a Facebook group with over 18,000 members. “I’m not going to—how am I going to survive?” Anderson adds of her thoughts at the time. The website of the California Franchise Tax Board notes: “AB 5 is a bill the governor signed into law in September 2019 addressing employment status when a hiring entity claims that the person it hired is an independent contractor.” Anderson says she has worked for almost 25 years as a freelance writer, an editor or managing editor, and a photographer. She says she “started investigating” the state’s new law “and I realized that … it encompassed all professions.” “So golf caddies, videographers, photographers, nurse practitioners, whatever. So I thought, well, I want to find out how it’s affecting other people, not just me,” Anderson says of the law, adding: And so I started this public Facebook group just to see if I could hear some people’s stories and … sure enough, they started coming in in … November and December, people started losing their livelihoods overnight. For some in Israel, daily life is continuing, now set by a backdrop of war. “Rocket alert sirens will go off, and they'll say, 'Hold on, let me take my computer, let me go to the safe room,'” Scott Phillips said of his friends living in Israel, adding that while talking to him on video calls, “They keep their call going in the safe room. That's the Israeli spirit.” Phillips serves as the CEO of Passages, a Christian organization that has taken 1,000 students to Israel since 2016, including to two border villages that were decimated during Hamas' recent attacks. The attack Hamas launched on Israel Saturday was “a genocidal savage rampage by uncontrollable militants who were simply trying to destroy Jews,” says Victoria Coates, who formerly served as a deputy national security advisor to President Donald Trump. Hundreds of Israelis were killed in the initial attack and the death toll, which includes at least 14 Americans, continues to rise. Reports of Hamas torturing Israeli citizens and beheading babies are “appalling, and it shows you what these people are capable of,” says Coates, who is vice president of the Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation. Erin Boggs was 16 in 1992 when she learned she was pregnant. “I was scared, definitely kind of alone,” Boggs says. “So, I knew the decision was going to land on me solely, and it felt like a critically important decision.” Boggs says people around her suggested she could parent or abort, but no one recommended adoption, but that was ultimately the choice she made. “It was honestly through prayer and putting myself in each scenario and thinking through what each would look like, and adoption just made sense,” she says. About 23 years after Boggs placed her son Jordan for adoption with Jeanne and Scott Hamilton, she had the opportunity to meet him. From their first meeting, Boggs and Jordan Hamilton began building a relationship, and nearly eight years later, they, along with Jeanne and Scott Hamilton, are sharing their family story. A Southern California school district requires teachers and staff to notify parents when their children say they have been bullied, are considering self-harm, or decide to publicly identify as a gender opposite their biological sex at school. But California's Democratic attorney general, Rob Bonta, sued the district to block that policy, claiming that it violates the state's constitution; specifically, the students' privacy rights. Emily Rae, senior counsel at the nonprofit Liberty Justice Center, sat down with "The Daily Signal Podcast" to break down the issues at the center of the case.
