Professor Explains Why Founding Fathers 'Deliberately Made Congress Weak,' Series Pt. 1
The Founding Fathers feared the power of the legislative branch from its inception in the late 1700s. They did not want to trade one tyrant for a group of tyrants, one professor tells "The Daily Signal Podcast," so they “deliberately made Congress weak by dividing it up into these two bodies,” the House and the Senate. According to Joseph Postell, Hillsdale College associate professor of politics and Heritage Foundation visiting fellow, the Founders wanted the House and Senate to “fight amongst each other” because this would create a check on power. And fight they did. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “The early politicians were really committed to their principles and were willing to fight over them,” Postell said, adding that "Duels were very common.” Postell joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" for Part One of a three-part series on how Congress really works. He discusses the history of Congress and what the Founding Fathers would say about what the legislative branch has become today. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Missouri Attorney General Breaks Down State's Battle Against 'Child Mutilation'
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey spent the last week battling for the state's law protecting children from irreversible transgender interventions, both surgical and hormonal. "We're winning this fight and it's important to keep fighting and pushing forward not to give up one inch of space in order to protect kids," he stressed. The attorney general joined The Daily Signal podcast to break down why LGBTQ groups are fighting SB 49, the "Missouri Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act," which went into effect Monday. "Under this act, no health care provider shall perform gender transition surgeries on any minor," the legislation's summary states. "Until August 28, 2027, no health care provider shall prescribe or administer cross-sex hormones or puberty-blocking drugs to a minor for a gender transition, unless such minor was receiving such treatment prior to August 28, 2023." "A violation of these provisions shall be considered unprofessional conduct and shall result in the revocation of the health care provider's professional license," the summary continues. "Additionally, the prescription or administration of cross-sex hormones or puberty-blocking drugs to a minor for a gender transition shall be grounds for a cause of action against the health care provider, as described in the act." Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed the bill into law on June 7, warning at the time: "These decisions have permanent consequences for life and should not be made by impressionable children who may be in crisis or influenced by the political persuasions of others." But LGBTQ groups challenged the law — organizations that Bailey described to The Daily Signal as "radical left-wing activists that are more interested in social ideology and the protection of children." "That's why it was so important to actually go to court, get an open court, and test their evidence," he explained. "They're the plaintiff. They have a burden of proof if they want to stop this law from going into effect." On Friday, a Missouri trial court declined to block SB 49, citing “conflicting and unclear” medical evidence on the effectiveness of so-called puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. “The science and medical evidence is conflicting and unclear,” Judge Stephen R. Ohmer ruled Friday. “Accordingly, the evidence raises more questions than answers.” Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Hawaii Locals 'Universally Angry' About Federal Response to Maui Wildfires

Where government officials have failed, he says, locals have stepped up to serve the needs of the community. How Christians Should Respond to Transgenderism
How does a church community respond when someone comes through the doors who identifies as transgender, or who is struggling with his or her gender identity? What does a response of love look like? According to author-lawyer John Bursch, the “very first response is accompaniment.” “Just like anybody who is suffering in any situation, whether it be a physical situation, a life situation, a mental health issue, to love is to accompany someone, to walk with them, to support them,” says Bursch, author of the new book “Loving God’s Children: The Church and Gender Ideology.” Loving someone “doesn't mean giving them support without giving them the truth," he says, because “true love is not just ignoring the deeper stuff and putting a Band-Aid on the surface.” Bursch, vice president of appellate advocacy and senior counsel at the Christian legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the practical ways churches can love those who struggle with gender identity, and what theology and science teach us about human sexuality. ‘Punch in the Gut,’ Afghanistan Veteran Says About Seeing Taliban Takeover
Aug. 15 marked two years since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan after a nearly two-decade war. For James Hasson, co-author of “Kabul: The Untold Story of Biden’s Fiasco and the American Warriors Who Fought to the End” and an Afghanistan veteran, seeing the Taliban takeover “was a punch in the gut.” “And I know for at least all the other Afghan veterans that I’ve spoken to, it was a similar punch in the gut for them, as well,” says Hasson, who rose to the rank of Army captain. “And especially then seeing the [Biden] administration repeatedly say that, ‘The Taliban were now our partners,’ that they were being ‘businesslike and professional,’ when of course this is the same Taliban that we just spent 20 years fighting.” “I lost people I know over there, or people I know passed away over there,” Hasson adds. “And a lot of other people in my circumstances who served there had the same kind of experience, and it’s a very difficult thing to reconcile. And writing this book was an absolute honor, but it was difficult also to do, in part just to see that be absolutely whitewashed.” Hasson, together with co-author Jerry Dunleavy, an investigator for the House Foreign Affairs Committee, joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss their book, the No. 1 takeaway they want people to have after reading their book, and the 13 U.S. service members who were killed on Aug. 26, 2021, at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Iowa AG on How California Is Trying to Use Its ‘Market Power to Change How We Farm'
Iowa is calling on Congress to prevent California from overregulating the agricultural sector. "California trying to use their market power to change how we farm, [and] I think that violates the Constitution," Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird says. California's Proposition 12 regulations, implemented in 2022, "require veal calves, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens to be housed in systems that comply with specific standards for freedom of movement, cage-free design, and specified minimum floor space," according to the California state government. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to Proposition 12 in May, leaving the law in place. Now, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and 10 other GOP governors have sent a letter to Congress asking lawmakers to protect the "nation's agricultural interests from states that are working to put onerous and unfounded regulations on livestock producers that will ultimately increase food costs and hurt farming operations." Bird says Iowa will continue to "stand up for not just farmer's ability to farm, but anybody that wants to do business and not be told what to do by a big, liberal state like California." Bird joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss the fight against Proposition 12. She also discusses the court battle over Iowa's fetal heartbeat law that would protect babies in the womb starting at about six weeks of pregnancy. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Sen. Joni Ernst: Iowa State Fair Buzzes With Presidential Candidates
Loaded with attractions such as bacon pecan pie on a stick, dairy cows, a tractor pull, and presidential candidates, the Iowa State Fair truly offers something for everyone. Over a million visitors are expected this year for the annual fair, which runs Aug. 10-20, so it’s a magnet for presidential hopefuls ahead of Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses Jan. 15. Presidential candidates “know that this is a place that they need to come in order to socialize with the Iowa voter, answer very hard questions coming from those Iowa voters, and it really sets the stage as we ramp up towards those January caucuses,” Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, tells The Daily Signal. Voters in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina traditionally go first in casting their ballots during primary season, so it’s no surprise that politicians spend time in all three states. Iowan voters “hope that we can get our country back on track” following the Biden administration, Ernst says. “What we see with this president is a president who appeases our adversaries all around the globe,” Ernst says. “It’s a president who has focused so far left on green ideology and climate ideology that he’s hurting middle America. They just want to trample over the American people and do whatever he wants to do regardless of the consequences.” Iowa’s junior senator joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” from the State Fair to discuss the visiting GOP presidential candidates and the effects on voters of the four indictments of former President Donald Trump. Stephen Meyer on The Case for Intelligent Design
Science and the theory of intelligent design go hand in hand, says Stephen Meyer, author of the book "Return of the God Hypothesis." The "God hypothesis," Meyer says, is the "idea that the postulation of a transcendent intelligence, who is also active in the creation, provides a better explanation, causal explanation, for the origin of the big things we've discovered about biological and cosmological origins." Meyer, who also directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute, has dedicated his career to proving that our world wasn't created by accident but by the hand of God through intelligent design. He uses philosophy and science to make his case. Meyer joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his journey into investigating the origins of the universe. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. ‘It’s Almost Everywhere,’ Scholar Says of China’s Infiltration of America’s K-12 Schools
China’s infiltration of American K-12 schools is “almost everywhere,” according to Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars. “That is, in every state that we’ve looked at, we have found instances of it, but I would say it’s concentrated in the feeder schools to elite education, which means mostly West Coast and East Coast, but not exclusively those,” Wood says. “The effort here is, China’s not just spreading around its resources promiscuously across the land. It’s looking for places where buying influence will yield results in the long term,” he adds. “So, it’s widespread, but much more prevalent here on the East Coast and California.” In April, The Heritage Foundation awarded the National Association of Scholarsits Innovation Prize, which “is intended to spark creative disruption in the conservative movement as we strive to ensure the future of American self-governance.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Wood joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss some of the concerns surrounding the Chinese Communist Party’s influence in our education system and some of the other work the National Association of Scholars has been doing in addition to digging into China’s infiltration of and influence in K-12 schools. State GOP Prohibits Teachers Unions' Money in School-Related Elections
Alabama Republicans have told teachers unions to stay out of their school-related elections. The Alabama Republican Party recently voted to ban GOP candidates for the Alabama Board of Education, local school boards, and county school superintendent from accepting donations from teachers unions. John Wahl, chairman of the Alabama GOP, says the change was needed to ensure that parents, and not special-interest groups, have control over their children’s education. “There's only one purpose that these education unions exist, and that's to lobby for their facet of the education system,” Wahl says. “There's only one reason school boards and superintendents exist, and that is to put forth the policies that regulate the school systems, so it's a direct conflict of interest.” Wahl joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what this change means for protecting parental rights in Alabama. Wahl also weighs in on the priorities of Alabama voters and what we can expect at the first GOP presidential debate on Aug. 23. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. ‘It’s A Little Late,’ Lawmaker Says of Biden’s Executive Order on US Investments in Chinese Technology
President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at restricting U.S. investment in certain Chinese high-tech, including artificial intelligence, microelectronics and semiconductors, and quantum information technologies. Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., however, “[thinks] it’s a little late.” “China has been stealing our technology for decades,” says Green, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. “The problem is the high-tech stuff is now fueling their military expansion.” “So, I know about two years ago, maybe a year and a half ago, there was a robotics company that was bought out of Massachusetts,” Green says. “They didn’t buy it for the robotics. They bought it to get the [artificial intelligence] out of the company, and China’s just been doing this left and right.” Green joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to further discuss the executive order, a laboratory in California that reportedly has connections to Chinese pharmaceutical firms, and the Chinese-owned app TikTok. ‘Egregiously Obvious’ That Biden Admin Violated First Amendment Rights, Tech Policy Expert Says
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, recently tweeted a lengthy thread in hopes of exposing Americans to the so-called Facebook Files. Using all capital letters, Jordan wrote July 27: “THE FACEBOOK FILES, PART 1: SMOKING-GUN DOCS PROVE FACEBOOK CENSORED AMERICANS BECAUSE OF BIDEN WHITE HOUSE PRESSURE.” Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also has tweeted about other parts of the “Facebook Files.” Asked by The Daily Signal what the most shocking discovery is so far, Jake Denton, research associate in The Heritage Foundation’s Tech Policy Center, replies that “none of this really came as a surprise, necessarily.” (The Daily Signal is The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet.) “It’s egregiously obvious they were violating our First Amendment rights,” Denton says of the Biden administration, adding: There’s this huge interplay collusion between Big Tech and big government, and then a week later, no one’s talking about it. And I think that the shock factor has gone away, because we just keep seeing it happen. If you’re looking for one element of the [document] drops that kind of stand out from all of them, [it] is the correspondence trying to take down a meme, which kind of just shows you the comedic scale that this has reached, where you have government employees whose daily job is to scroll through Facebook [and] Twitter and critique a meme’s role in the information environment.Mark Zuckerberg heads Meta, parent company of Facebook. Entrepreneur Elon Musk, who bought Twitter in October, recently renamed it X. Denton joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the secrets exposed by the “Facebook Files,” why Americans should be concerned, and what the revelations say about the relationship between social media companies and the Biden administration. Carrie Gress on How Feminist Movement Drew Ideology From the Occult
INTERVIEW: The English Romantic poet Percy Shelley, who died in 1822 at age 29, played a significant role in developing the ideas of the feminist movement, author Carrie Gress says. Ideas of the “the occult, smashing the patriarchy, and free love” played a significant role in Shelley’s writing and ideology, says Gress, author of the new book “The End of Woman: How Smashing the Patriarchy Has Destroyed Us.” Shelley was a “barbaric man” who was “involved in the occult,” Gress says. His wife was Mary Shelley, author of the 1818 novel “Frankenstein,” she notes, and Shelley drew on the ideas of her parents—a vision of a “women’s revolution where there’s no monogamy, there’s no marriage, all of these things are just erased, and people just live this bucolic life without any reference to their human nature.” Shelley’s ideology contributed to the modern feminist movement, a movement that has led to what Gress calls “The End of Woman.” Gress, also a fellow at the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the history of feminism and explain how the feminist movement has harmed women and left women unfulfilled. State Schools Chief Seeks Answers on District’s Reported Ties to Chinese Government
Parents Defending Education’s new report, “Little Red Classrooms,” offers some worrisome information about China’s reach in U.S. K-12 schools through so-called Confucius Classrooms. The report notes that Parents Defending Education “uncovered contracts that show Confucius Classrooms, or other Chinese government-backed programming, are still in operation” in a number of schools throughout the U.S., including Tulsa Public Schools in Oklahoma. “On July 11, 2022, the Tulsa Public Schools board of education approved entering into an agreement with the Confucius Classroom Coordination Offices, which [operate] out of the International Leadership of Texas Global nonprofit,” the report says. “The Chinese International Education Foundation would cover the cost of the program. Carver Middle School offers students a ‘Confucius Connection’ through its ‘Global Awareness’ programming.” Ryan Walters, Oklahoma state superintendent of public instruction, says, “What we did is, we — immediately upon finding this out — we have required the district to turn over any contracts, any curriculum, anything that’s been handed out through this course.” “So, we are actively compiling that from the district right now to do a deep dive into, ‘Hey, what was the Chinese government trying to get in this classroom? What were the teachers discussing in these classes?'” Walters says, adding: So that’s what we’ve required of the district right now. So, we are going to be looking for that information to have a better understanding of what was being funneled into these classrooms.Walters joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Parents Defending Education report, whether he has spoken with any teachers, parents, or students at Tulsa’s Carver Middle School, and Tulsa Public Schools’ response to his Twitter video, “China will not be allowed in Oklahoma schools.” Hosted on Acast. Abortion Activists Turn to Legislation to Target Pregnancy Care Centers
INTERVIEW: Pro-abortion forces have moved from physically attacking pro-life pregnancy care centers to weaponizing legislation against them, according to the Rev. Jim Harden. In recent months, “we started to see an ebb in the violent attacks against pro-life entities and a rise in potential weaponization of legislation specifically targeting pro-life activity in the public square, and specifically even more so pregnancy center activity,” says Harden, CEO of the pro-life New York-based organization CompassCare. In Illinois for example, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill "specifically giving the attorney general in Illinois the … unfettered ability to define what 'deceptive practices' means and what 'misinformation' means when it comes to the activities and speech of pro-life pregnancy centers,” Harden says. Violating the law “comes with $50,000 fines for each occurrence [of spreading misinformation] as they define it,” Harden said. Harden joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ways in which pro-abortion activists are using legislation to target pro-life centers, and to offer advice to these pro-life organizations as to what they can do to protect themselves so they can continue serving the women and babies who need them. Is China Influencing What Your Child Is Learning in School?
Parents Defending Education has released a new report that offers some unsettling information about the reach of the People’s Republic of China in U.S. K-12 schools through so-called Confucius Classrooms. “Confucius Classrooms are a program that is intended to teach children Chinese language and culture, which on its face sounds benign, but some of your viewers, listeners might remember Confucius Institutes, which were the corollary in the university system,” says Nicole Neily, founder and president of Parents Defending Education. Parents Defending Education describes itself on its website as “a national grass-roots organization working to reclaim our schools from activists imposing harmful agendas.” “That’s something that [Cabinet] Secretaries [Betsy] DeVos and [Mike] Pompeo reined in during the Trump administration, because Confucius Institutes at the higher-ed level were actually found by the U.S. State Department to be considered foreign missions of the People’s Republic of China,” Neily says, adding: And so, the fact that these are operating in K-12 schools across the country, even though we have, for the large part, reined in these programs at the higher-ed level, should really concern a lot of people.Neily joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what’s being taught in Confucius Classrooms, some key takeaways of the report, and reactions from U.S. lawmakers about the report. What Is, and Isn’t, in 3rd Trump Indictment, Legal Expert Explains
INTERVIEW: Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday was indicted for a third time, and "it's striking that there's really nothing new in the indictment," Steven Bradbury says. How Unrest in France After Police-Involved Killing Compared With Riots After George Floyd’s Death
Protests and riots erupted following the police-involved fatal shooting of 17-year-old French citizen Nahel Merzouk, who was of Moroccan and Algerian descent, on June 27 in France. Lora Ries, director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at The Heritage Foundation, says “certainly what happened in France takes us directly back to 2020” after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “… and I can’t help but wonder: Has [the] U.S. exported this model, where if someone from a minority community is killed by the police, that these very violent mobs are going to regularly pop up and cause such destruction?” Riesasks. “To be seen, I guess, in France. Unfortunately, the U.S. lived through many months of it in 2020. And a little bit different in terms of what minority group we’re talking about. In this French incident, as Ellie [Krasne-Cohen] explained, the gentleman was of North African descent, and the riots from 2020 that we dealt with in the U.S. was largely about the black community,” Ries says, adding: However, given our immigration situation, mass migration to the U.S. right now, this is going to be an interesting situation to watch.Ries and Ellie Krasne-Cohen, a visiting fellow at Independent Women's Forum and former Heritage Foundation employee who now lives in France, join today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the deadly French shooting, and similarities and differences with how French and U.S. media covered the incident. Ukraine Drones Bring War to Moscow. What Happens Next?
INTERVIEW: Russian officials say three Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow over the weekend, and one of those drones struck a skyscraper in the city. Ukraine has now taken responsibility for the attack. “Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia—to its symbolic centers and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process,” Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The strike is part of Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensive against Russia. In response to the drone strike, Russia's former president and prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, said, “Just imagine that the offensive … in tandem with NATO succeeded and ended up with part of our land being taken away. Then we would have to use nuclear weapons by virtue of the stipulations of the Russian Presidential Decree," according to a Telegram post reported by CNN. How likely is it that Russia would use nuclear weapons against Ukraine in the coming months? Victoria Coates, Heritage Foundation vice president of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, says that "it's been possible from the beginning," but added that she has "never considered it a particularly likely turn of events." Coates joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to explain how likely it is Ukraine will continue to target civilian infrastructure in Russia, what the results of such targeting might be, and what America’s involvement in the war should look like moving forward. BUSTED: Why Hunter Biden-Justice Department Plea Deal Collapsed
Hunter Biden and his lawyers walked into a courtroom prepared to enter a plea deal with the Justice Department last week. The deal fell through. President Joe Biden’s son was prepared to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and to lying on a gun purchase form. The DOJ lawyers and the younger Biden’s attorneys were ready to sign off on the deal in court, but U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika said she had no intention to “rubber-stamp” the deal. Why? Mike Howell, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, says the plea deal granted the president's son “global immunity for all other conduct.” Asked if he would sign onto the deal if that immunity agreement was removed, Hunter Biden said “no,” according to Howell. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) The Justice Department was offering him “a 'get-out-of-jail-free card' for any future charges that may be brought,” Howell says. Howell joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the role the Oversight Project played in uncovering the details of the plea deal, and what's likely next for Hunter Biden. Enjoy the show!
