Texas Land Commissioner: Terrorists Crossing Border Has Been ‘Concern From Day One'
There are growing concerns over who is crossing America’s border with Mexico in light of the war between Hamas and Israel. “This is absolutely a concern,” Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham says of the threat of terrorists taking advantage of the lack of security along America’s southern border. “We are seeing over 200 people on the terrorist Most Wanted List that we have caught alone this year,” according to Buckingham, adding that “we are exceeding six year cumulative records for people coming from countries that sponsor terrorism. This has always been our concern from day one. It is why you need a secure border.” Buckingham’s joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the security concerns at the border following a memo from Customs and Border Protection’s San Diego Field Office warning of Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine attempting to cross the border. The San Diego unit “assesses that individuals inspired by, or reacting to, the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt travel to or from the area of hostilities in the Middle East via circuitous transit across the southwest border,” according to the memo, which was first reported Monday by the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Foreign fighters motivated by ideology or mercenary soldiers of fortune may attempt to obfuscate travel to or from the U.S. to or from countries in the Middle East through Mexico,” that CBP memo says. In addition to discussing the threat an open border poses to the nation, Buckingham explains why President Joe Biden is constructing a 17-mile section of border wall in South Texas. Enjoy the show! Official Says His State Has Suffered 'Highest Fentanyl Death Rate in America'
West Virginia is feeling the worst effects of illicit fentanyl flowing across America’s southern border, according to state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. Fentanyl is “ravaging our state,” Morrisey says, noting that is “in part because West Virginia for many decades really has had the highest drug-overdose death rate in the nation.” And now, the Mountain State has “the highest fentanyl death rate in America.” Working to secure the border will save lives in West Virginia, he says. Morrisey joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Biden administration’s failure to secure America’s border and the growing concerns over border security given the war between Israel and Hamas. Coach Kennedy Explains How God Used ‘Average Joe’ to Defend Religious Freedom
“Average” is not the adjective that comes to mind when talking about an American who took a religious freedom case all the way to the Supreme Court, but football coach Joe Kennedy says he identified with the word. “I’ve always looked at myself actually [as] below average,” Kennedy says. “I really had no idea that God was going to take my life in this way, in this path.” In his new book, “Average Joe: The Coach Joe Kennedy Story,” Kennedy explains how his simple commitment to God to take a knee in silent prayer on the 50-yard line after the high school football games he coached landed him at the center of one of the largest religious freedom cases in recent history, Kennedy v. Bremerton, Wash., School District. It was decided in his favor 6-3 by the Supreme Court on June 27, 2022. “If you could take a schmuck like me and change the path of the nation as far as religious freedom and the First Amendment goes, imagine what [God] could do with some other people,” the coach says. Kennedy joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss his new book and to explain why he chose to take a stand for religious freedom and why he left coaching shortly after his Supreme Court victory. Rabbi Scott Kahn on Being in Israel for Hamas Attacks
For Rabbi Scott Kahn, Oct. 7 was a holy day, the Sabbath. He went to an early morning service at his synagogue and standing outside for a moment, he saw something strange. “We suddenly heard booms overhead in our city of Ramat Beit Shemesh. So we looked up, and we saw smoke just randomly. It wasn’t a plane. It was just like bursts of smoke,” he tells The Daily Signal. Soon, he heard about how his loved ones were affected, including his son-in-law in the army reserves, who was called up to serve near Gaza. Kahn heard about one distant family member who was shot, but who had survived by hiding in a ditch. In Sderot, another family member escaped to a bomb shelter with her three children “less because of the rockets and more because there were terrorists roaming the streets of Sderot looking for Jews to kill.” In Kahn’s full interview for “The Daily Signal Podcast,” he discusses the spiritual significance of Oct. 7 to Jews this year, how he and other Israelis are responding after the attacks, and what his hope for the future is. From Israel: Yael Eckstein Says ‘Even ISIS Didn’t Do Things Like This'
“Israel is a country who cherishes life,” Yael Eckstein says, “and our enemies know that." Those enemies use that fact as a tool against Israel, adds Eckstein, president and CEO of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, who is today's guest on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Hamas killed 1,300 Israelis and took hostage about 200 “elderly, babies, children, women, [and] handicapped” in its surpise attack Oct. 7 on Israel, she says, and the situation is “unfathomable.” “Even ISIS didn't do things like this,” Eckstein says, adding that when Hamas describes its aim as “to wipe Israel off the map and kill every man, woman and child, we have to take that seriously.” Speaking as a wife, mother, and global ministry leader living in Israel, Eckstein explains that Israelis are living in a paradox right now. “On one hand, we are as broken as I can ever remember the people of Israel being. And on the other hand, we are stronger than we've ever been,” she says on the podcast. On the podcast, Eckstein describes the work in Israel of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, as well as Israel's response to the surprise terrorist attack by Hamas. Reporter on the Ground in Israel Shares Firsthand Account of War-Torn Country
Field reporter and former U.S. Marine Julio Rosas, who has been in Israel since Wednesday, is sharing details from the ground as the war between Hamas and Israel continues. "Just before I signed on to join this podcast, there was—I got alerts on my phone that there were rockets being launched further to the south of us, and so that is currently the biggest threat," said Rosas, author of "Fiery But Mostly Peaceful: The 2020 Riots and the Gaslighting of America," as he joined us for an interview on "The Daily Signal Podcast." "Also, there are some infiltrations attempts still being made, not obviously on [as] big of a scale as the initial attacks, but this is still—it's a pretty active area," said Rosas. Rosas was in Sderot, Israel, at the time of the interview. "The more north you go in Tel Aviv, which is where most of the flights go into right now, things are kind of normal. I would say that not as many businesses are open during normal hours," added Rosas. "And also just the fact, again, rockets get fired all the way as far north over there." Rosas, who said he was also in Northern Israel, shared that "[i]t's kind of the same story where the towns along the Lebanese border have been evacuated." Rosas continued: There's not that many people there left, and it's concerning because there's still a lot of kind of minimal fighting between the [Israel Defense Forces] and Lebanese and Hezbollah kind of back and forth. So that's one of the reasons why Israel hasn't gone fully into Gaza yet, is because they want to make sure that their northern and eastern regions are prepared for any response that they make here down south. Rosas joined today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss what he's hearing from locals about the Israel-Hamas war, what he wants Americans to know about what he's seeing on the ground in Israel, and how the situation has changed since he arrived in the war-torn country. It’s ‘the Darkest Day In Israeli History,’ Ex-Envoy Says
As the war between Hamas and Israel continues, President Joe Biden is set to visit Israel on Wednesday following an invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday. “I think it’s important for any American president to show support for, and solidarity with, Israel in its darkest hour. I mean, this is the darkest day in Israeli history,” Nathan Sales, former ambassador-at-large and coordinator for counterterrorism at the State Department, said prior to Biden’s trip being confirmed. “In the 75 years that the state of Israel has existed, we’ve never seen bloodshed and violence like this.” “In fact, it’s the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust,” said Sales, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. “Think about that. America needs to stand by our ally, our closest ally in the region and the only democracy in the region.” Politico reported Sunday that Biden could travel to the war-torn country “as early as this week.” “I think what I would like to hear from President Biden when he goes to Israel is ‘We’re going to change course on Iran. We are going to not just go after the tentacles of the octopus, the terrorist groups in Lebanon, the terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip,'” Sales said, continuing to cite what he thinks the president should say: “We’re going to go after the head, the masters of this entire strategy. We’re going to hold them accountable as well. We’re going to deprive them of the resources that they’re investing in terror proxies to kill Jews. Oh, and by the way, to kill 30 Americans as well.”Will he actually say that? I’m not going to hold my breath.Sales joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how the U.S. can help Israel as the war continues, Iran’s history of supporting Hamas, and his thoughts on Biden’s comments during an interview with CBS that aired on Sunday night. California Freelancer Says She Questioned How She Would ‘Survive’ Under This State Law
A freelance writer and editor is speaking out about the negative effects of a recent California law, saying she questioned how she was “going to survive” after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, known as AB 5. “The law ... was signed … on Sept. 18, 2019, and when I woke up that morning and I read about it, you know, the next day, I thought, ‘This is going to be an existential threat to my career,'” recalls Karen Anderson, founder of Freelancers Against AB5, a Facebook group with over 18,000 members. “I’m not going to—how am I going to survive?” Anderson adds of her thoughts at the time. The website of the California Franchise Tax Board notes: “AB 5 is a bill the governor signed into law in September 2019 addressing employment status when a hiring entity claims that the person it hired is an independent contractor.” Anderson says she has worked for almost 25 years as a freelance writer, an editor or managing editor, and a photographer. She says she “started investigating” the state’s new law “and I realized that … it encompassed all professions.” “So golf caddies, videographers, photographers, nurse practitioners, whatever. So I thought, well, I want to find out how it’s affecting other people, not just me,” Anderson says of the law, adding: And so I started this public Facebook group just to see if I could hear some people’s stories and … sure enough, they started coming in in … November and December, people started losing their livelihoods overnight. Anderson, a participant in a recent Heritage Foundation panel discussion, is today’s guest on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” She shares the No. 1 takeaway of the California law with listeners and discusses what’s being done to change it. Inside the Fight to Keep Parents in the Know About Their Kids' Gender in California Schools
A Southern California school district requires teachers and staff to notify parents when their children say they have been bullied, are considering self-harm, or decide to publicly identify as a gender opposite their biological sex at school. But California's Democratic attorney general, Rob Bonta, sued the district to block that policy, claiming that it violates the state's constitution; specifically, the students' privacy rights. Emily Rae, senior counsel at the nonprofit Liberty Justice Center, sat down with "The Daily Signal Podcast" to break down the issues at the center of the case. Her organization represents the Chino Valley Unified School District, the Los Angeles-area district whose policy Bonta opposes. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Understanding the Job Ahead for Next House Speaker
The removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday was historic, but now it's time to talk about the future, one knowledgeable Capitol Hill watcher says. "We are at a critical juncture in this country," says Ryan Walker, executive vice president of Heritage Action for America, an independent, nonprofit organization affiliated with The Heritage Foundation, which is the parent organization of The Daily Signal. "If we don't solve the spending problem," Walker says, "we won't have a country to issue treasury bonds for in the future." The Heritage Action leader says the job of the next speaker of the House is to rein in out-of-control government spending and "talk through this with the Senate and, more importantly, with the American people." Walker joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to talk about the official candidates for House speaker and how long the process of electing a new speaker may take. Enjoy the show! How Project 2025 Is Gearing Up for Next Conservative Presidential Administration
ew leadership is needed in America, says Spencer Chretien, associate director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project, also known as Project 2025. "We see every day the effects of the current administration, whether it's the open southern border, rampant inflation, a woke and weaponized government, foreign policy disaster," he says. "And we need new leadership in this country." "And so, while that is true, it's also important that we get ready for what happens after Jan. 20, 2025, when the new president takes office," Chretien says, adding: So, Project 2025 is now more than 70 conservative organizations. It's organized here at Heritage, but it includes really a 'who's who' of the conservative movement. We have groups involved that are more establishment-friendly, more populist-friendly, more libertarian, social conservative. Chretien joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how presidential candidates have been responding to the project, what the administrative state is and what dismantling it would look like, and his response to criticism of the project. Government Averted a Shutdown. Here's What Happens Next
Congress has averted a government shutdown—for now. The continuing resolution passed Saturday keeps government agencies funded at current levels until Nov. 17. The bill passed 335-91 in the House and 88-9 in the Senate. But it’s a short-term fix, and lawmakers remain on a tight deadline to finish passing 12 annual appropriations bills. Republicans continue to demand federal spending cuts and money to secure America’s southern border, and Democrats are demanding more aid for Ukraine. “I think what’s likely here is, you’re going to get a little bit of both, not enough to make either side happy,” budget expert Richard Stern says. Stern, director of the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at The Heritage Foundation, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what to expect in Congress as spending fights continue over the next six weeks, and how a possible change in House leadership might affect negotiations. Inside the Defamation Lawsuit That Could Blow Southern Poverty Law Center Wide Open
The Southern Poverty Law Center is notorious for branding mainstream conservative and Christian organizations like Alliance Defending Freedom and Moms for Liberty “hate groups” or “antigovernment extremist groups,” placing them on a map with chapters of the Ku Klux Klan. In 2019, the SPLC put D.A. King’s Dustin Inman Society on the “hate map,” years after it had told the Associated Press that King’s organization was not a “hate group.” King has sued, and a judge has allowed his defamation lawsuit to go forward. The Daily Signal's Tyler O'Neil sat down with D.A. King to discuss the lawsuit and what it's like to be branded a "hate group." Biggest Hits, Misses in 2nd GOP Presidential Debate
Seven GOP candidates took to the debate stage Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, for the second Republican presidential debate. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Born In the Right Body: Launch of the Biological Integrity Initiative
Doctors don’t have enough evidence to know the long-term effects of what happens to someone who takes puberty blockers as a child, the executive director of the American College of Pediatricians says. "We know that if you stop puberty with these puberty blockers, you stop a whole sequence of events," Dr. Jill Simons says, adding that there also are "effects on the brain." "There's effects on the biology that you need that for sexual organ development to become fertile in the future," she says. But according to Simon, "There's a lot of things we don't know about stopping puberty, and you can't get that back once you stop the puberty blockers." Given the rise in gender-identity treatments for children, the American College of Pediatricians launched a new initiative Wednesday called the Biological Integrity Initiative to provide not only medical professionals, "but also parents, teachers, policymakers, even teens themselves who are questioning some of these things" with resources and scientific data on the known effects of gender treatments on children, Simons says. Simons joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what medical professionals do and don’t know about the effects of puberty blockers and hormone treatments on young people and what resources the Biological Integrity Initiative offers. What Congress’ China Committee Chairman Would Ask Candidates at GOP Presidential Debate
The second Republican presidential debate is set for Wednesday night, and if Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., chairman of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, were the debate’s moderator, he knows what he would ask the candidates relating to China. “Maybe the most obvious question is perhaps the most important, which is: ‘Why should an average American care about the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party?'” he says. “It may be obvious to those of us who work in D.C. or people who work at think tanks in D.C., but at times I fear it can seem like a distant “over-there” threat, when my view is very much that it’s a “right-here-at-home-threat” and a threat to American sovereignty,” says Gallagher, who is also chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation. Gallagher, also member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, adds: Perhaps the most important policy question, though, is: “What is your plan for rebuilding American military power in order to deter a war with China over Taiwan?”And then, if they want to stoke debate, they can ask questions about TikTok, because candidates have different opinions about whether we should ban TikTok, force a sale, or do nothing at all.Gallagher joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss some key issues relating to China that he thinks candidates should be focused on and address while campaigning, along with his pitch to young voters who are on TikTok about why the Chinese app should be banned. 'China's Economy Is The Foundation of Much of Its Power Projection Around The World,' Author Says
The People's Republic of China "has used the power of its economy beyond its borders to push its illiberal and authoritarian geopolitical objectives and to change the behavior of individuals, governments, companies, and multilateral institutions," says Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, author of "Beijing Rules: How China Weaponized Its Economy to Confront the World." "The reason I chose to focus on China's economic power is that I have covered China's power projection beyond its borders as a beat for about seven years, and I found that underlying much of China's power is its economic power," says Allen-Ebrahimian, who is the China reporter for Axios. "Whether that's its diplomatic power, it's still, to this day, a lot of the foundation of that is its economic power, what we tend to call extraterritorial censorship," says Allen-Ebrahimian, who has lived in Taiwan since August 2022, adding: I mean, the NBA and Hollywood studios will self-censor. This is an extension of China's economic power. And so I found that at least, I would say, until the first half of the 21st century, China's economy is the foundation of much of its power projection around the world.Allen-Ebrahimian joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss her new book and what she has seen as the biggest change that China has undergone since she lived there in 2004 and then again from 2008 to 2012. Why Kathy Grace Duncan Detransitioned After Living as a Man for 11 Years
As a little girl, Kathy Grace Duncan watched her father abuse her mother and vowed she would never be victimized like her mom. "I didn't have the tools to realize that my dad was abusive, my mom's a victim," Duncan says, "so, my takeaway from that was that women were weak, women were vulnerable, and women were hated." Duncan realized she would grow up to be a woman and did not want to be "weak," so she says she "made a vow at a very early age, 'I'm going to be the man my dad is not.'" "I was running from pain," Duncan says. When she was 19, Duncan began to live as a man and did so for the next 11 years. When Duncan came to know Jesus as her savior, she got involved in a local church while she was still living as a man. Over the course of several years, Duncan journeyed with her church community and eventually made the decision to detransition. For Duncan, it was a five year journey to go through the "de-transitioning process, and that was undoing the thinking that being a woman is bad, that I'm not safe, that I'll be hated, that I'm vulnerable," she says. Duncan, director of gender advocacy for the CHANGED Movement, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share her story and discuss what children struggling with gender dysphoria need most. Elizabeth Woning, co-founder of CHANGED Movement, also joins the show to explain the fight to preserve counseling and therapy that affirms and celebrates an individual's biological sex amid a struggle with their gender identity. How Chinese Communist Party Is Influencing US Classrooms
A Republican congressman is speaking out about how the Chinese Communist Party is influencing U.S. classrooms. "Well, they come in, and they sort of soft-pedal their propaganda, but yet, they also whitewash history by eliminating Taiwan," says Rep. Aaron Bean, R-Fla., chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee's early childhood, elementary, and secondary education subcommittee. “You can’t talk about Taiwan. You can’t talk about Tiananmen Square. You can’t talk about the Uyghurs. You can’t talk about Tibet, the Dalai Lama—all these things that they are influencing and really trying to grasp the young minds of young students to say how great China is,” adds Bean, who was elected to Congress last November. Bean joins today’s episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss a hearing his subcommittee held Tuesday, “Academic Freedom Under Attack: Loosening the CCP’s Grip on America’s Classrooms”; the Confucius Classrooms located throughout the U.S.; and what’s at stake if the U.S. isn’t able to counter the communist regime’s influence in American classrooms.
