She Survived Terrorist Attacks to Become Voice for Democracy in UK

The threat of terrorism first touched Arlene Foster’s life when she was just a child. Her father was serving as a police officer in the United Kingdom when he was shot in his own home by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1979. The Provisional Irish Republican Army group was seeking to end British rule in Northern Ireland. The U.K. designated it a terrorist organization. Law enforcement, according to Foster, was seen as opposition to the efforts of the paramilitary group. Foster’s father survived, but less than a decade later, when Foster was 17, the Provisional Irish Republican Army bombed a school bus she was on. Thankfully, Foster and everyone else on the bus survived the attack. Today, bearing the title of baroness and serving in the House of Lords, Foster says she chose to get involved in politics “to be a democratic voice for the union, for the United Kingdom.” “There’s always an alternative to terrorism,” she says. “There’s always an alternative to violence.” Fosters joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to not only share her story, but also how the U.K. weathered terrorism in Northern Ireland years ago and the need to stand against Hamas and other terrorist activity today. She also weighs in on the strategic relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. and why a free-trade agreement would strengthen those ties and benefit both nations. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. 'Most Terrifying Poll Result I've Ever Seen': Scott Rasmussen on Elite 1%

When veteran pollster Scott Rasmussen surveyed a group of Americans he calls the elite 1% earlier this year, he discovered a startling number who say it's OK to win an election by cheating. The elite 1%—individuals who make over $150,000 a year, live in densely populated areas, and have postgraduate degrees—are overwhelmingly liberal. They give President Joe Biden an 82% approval rating, compared to his 40% average from the rest of Americans. Rasmussen asked these liberal voters: "Suppose that your favorite candidate loses a close election. However, people on the campaign know that they can win by cheating without being caught. Would you rather have your candidate win by cheating or lose by playing fair?" Among all Americans, just 7% said they would want their candidate to win by cheating. But that number rose to 35% among the elite 1% and skyrocketed to 69% among those who are part of the politically obsessed 1%, meaning they talk about politics every day. "I've been polling for a very long time and the last finding is the most terrifying poll result I've ever seen," Rasmussen told The Daily Signal. Rasmussen spoke to "The Daily Signal Podcast" about his findings and his upcoming plans for a weekly TV show. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Peter Schweizer on How China Is Behind America's Unrest

China knows that a weakened American society will mean an easier path for China to triumph on the international stage. In his explosive new book "Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans," Peter Schweizer chronicles China's surprising ties to the Ferguson protests and the 2020 riots. "Blood Money" also exposes how China is pushing fentanyl to the United States, knowing it will devastate our country, and how a Chinese billionaire is spending significant money to promote transgenderism in the United States, even as China remains an unfriendly place for LGBTQ Chinese. Finally, China is exporting a tool to the United States that increases the likelihood of mass shootings. To discuss all this and more, Schweizer joined "The Daily Podcast." Enjoy the show! Rep. August Pfluger on What's Next for TikTok Bill

TikTok might soon be facing a choice: Divest from its Chinese Communist Party-controlled parent company, or cease to operate in the U.S. “This is not about the content that is being posted on TikTok,” Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, says. “It's about the conduct of the company that controls TikTok, that makes the decisions, that has a narrative that is able to use Chinese Communist Party propaganda through the platform, if they so choose.” ByteDance is TikTok’s parent company. It's headquartered in Beijing and subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make data available to the CCP. The House is set to vote Wednesday on a bill designed to prevent foreign adversary-controlled applications from operating in the U.S. Some are referring to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act at the “TikTok bill,” since it would prevent TikTok from operating in the U.S. if the company does not break from ByteDance. The bill received bipartisan support in committee and is expected to pass the House. Pfluger joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why TikTok poses a national security threat to the U.S. and whether he thinks the bill will receive the same bipartisan support in the Senate. Following the conversation with Pfluger, Jake Denton, research associate in the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation, joins the show to explain how the app would effectively be banned in the U.S. if the bill does pass and TikTok refuses to divest from its CCP-controlled parent company. Todd Starnes on ‘Residual After-Effects of the Barack Obama Presidency'

In 2007, Todd Starnes was working at Fox News and covering then-Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. “I just felt like that was going to be the historic campaign, and it turned out to be,” says Starnes, a bestselling author and nationally syndicated radio host. The political climate facing America right now is in part due to the “residual after-effects of the Barack Obama presidency,” according to Starnes. The former Democratic senator from Illinois was president from 2009 to 2017. “First, Obama categorized all of the [2008 GOP opponent Sen.] John McCain supporters … [as] the folks that cling to their guns and their religion,” Starnes said. “He called them ‘bitter’ Americans. He made those remarks in a speech in San Francisco. And then you had Hillary Clinton coming out and talking about the irredeemable ‘deplorables.’” Starnes says both Obama and Clinton “were trying to dehumanize their opponents, their political opponents.” Second, Starnes points to Obama’s pledge to “fundamentally” transform America. In his new book, “Twilight’s Last Gleaming: Can America Be Saved?” Starnes explains how America arrived at the political division it finds itself in right now, and just how much time he thinks the nation has to right its course before it’s too late. Whistleblower Exposes Children's Hospital for Gender Treatments on Minors

Dr. Eithan Haim was completing his surgical training at Texas Children’s Hospital in the spring of 2023. On a Friday morning in June, just before graduation, a knock came on Haim's door. “I open it, [and] standing outside there are two federal agents with [the Department of] Health and Human Services,” Haim recalls. The surgeon says he was told he was under investigation in a case involving medical records. Just one month earlier, Haim had worked with journalist Christopher Rufo to blow the whistle on Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston and its gender treatments for minors. In 2022, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, took steps to ensure that hospitals in Texas weren't performing such procedures. As a result, the Texas Children’s Hospital announced that it had stopped doing the gender procedures on kids; inside the hospital, Haim says, he was seeing a different story. The hospital “took away all the public-facing indications that the program was still active,” Haim says, adding that “the hospital is telling the public this program no longer exists, but within the hospital, they're prioritizing it to the highest level." "So the directors of the program that supposedly did not exist were speaking at the hospital's most prestigious lecture series seven months after that statement [in which] they said they were shutting it down," the surgeon says. Haim joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why he is so passionate about defending minors from these dangerous medical procedures and standing against what he sees as the federal government's intimidation tactics. A Christian who faced persecution for her faith in Communist Romania in the 1980s and barely survived an assassination attempt orchestrated by dictator Nicolae Ceausescu warns that the undermining of parental rights in the U.S. today echoes Ceausescu's totalitarian government. "It's the same system that the socialists use in order for parents to be put in jail that the students, kids, will be taught in school to report their [parents] to school," Virginia Prodan, a human rights lawyer who grew up in Communist Romania but came to the U.S. after President Ronald Reagan secured her release, tells "The Daily Signal Podcast." What to Watch for on Super Tuesday

Voters in 15 states are headed to the polls or to caucuses Tuesday, in what is arguably the most important day in the 2024 presidential primary season; that is, Super Tuesday. Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia are all holding primaries. Caucuses will be held in Alaska and Utah. Ryan Walker, Heritage Action for America executive vice president, says that when you look at the states that have already held primaries, “Nikki Haley has not garnered more than 40% of the vote.” So, Walker says he will be watching to see whether the former South Carolina governor can go beyond that threshold in states voting Tuesday. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation, of which Heritage Action for America is the grassroots arm.) Former President Donald Trump has already clinched GOP primary and caucus victories in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Michigan, Idaho, and Missouri. Haley won the D.C. primary over the weekend. Trump got a boost in media coverage ahead of the Super Tuesday voting when on Monday the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in his favor and against Colorado’s efforts to remove his name from the ballot there citing the “Insurrection Clause” of the 14th Amendment. The ruling clears the way for Trump to earn more delegates on Tuesday ahead of the GOP convention in mid-July. “A state cannot decide if a former president, or a former candidate, is allowed to be on the ballot, especially if they have not been convicted of a crime,” Walker said. Walker joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what issues are driving voters to the polls on Super Tuesday, and what the results could mean for determining who ultimately will be the GOP nominee for president. Justices Weigh Future of Free Speech on Social Media Platforms

Can states prohibit social media companies from censoring the speech of their platforms' users? That's a question now before the Supreme Court. The justices heard oral arguments Monday in a pair of major First Amendment cases. The cases stem from laws passed in Texas and Florida in 2021 after a number of social media companies' deplatforming of then-President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Following social media companies' banning of Trump and a number of other conservative voices, both Texas and Florida passed laws preventing social media platforms, such as YouTube and Facebook, from censoring users’ constitutionally protected speech. But two trade associations challenged those laws on behalf of the social media companies. The trade groups argue that social media companies' decisions about what speech they censor is an editorial choice protected by the First Amendment. Are social media platforms required to carry everyone's views? Or like newspapers, do these Big Tech companies have a First Amendment right to choose what speech is and is not allowed on their platforms? The justices are expected to issue their decision on the case in June. Texas state Sen. Bryan Hughes, who sponsored the Texas law; Adam Candeub, a Michigan State University law professor; and Jack Fitzhenry, a legal fellow with The Heritage Foundation (of which the Daily Signal is the news outlet), join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to offer their analyses on the arguments before the high court on Monday and what the justices' ruling could mean for Americans. Bob Woodson on Challenging ‘Racial Profiteers’

The national tragedy of more drug overdose deaths, suicides, and homicides won’t be solved “if we have to look at each other through the prism of race,” activist Bob Woodson says. “There are people who are profiting from the grievance of our society, and we must challenge these racial profiteers,” says Woodson, an author and founder of the Washington-based Woodson Center. Some “try to promote” the racial challenges in America, Woodson says, citing two examples. “Black Lives Matter ... comes along and collects $100 million in white guilt money," he says. "Ibram X. Kendi at Boston University collects $48 million to do anti-racist research.” In Woodson's view, "race has been a distraction” to addressing the real problems confronting poor communities. Since the 1980s, Woodson, who is black, has worked to address issues plaguing poor communities across the country. As a young man, he was part of the civil rights movement. But, finding himself in disagreement with some aspects of the movement, Woodson says he “began to work on behalf of low-income people of all races.” Now, at 86, Woodson says, The Woodson Center gives a voice "to the voiceless grassroots leaders who are laboring in these communities confronting drugs and violence and out-of-wedlock births.” Woodson joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to expose the harmful effects of a focus on race on black communities and to explain how the strategy of The Woodson Center transforms lives and entire neighborhoods. Trump’s Legal Cases 101: Where They Stand

Former President Donald Trump is still facing multiple legal cases against him, including federal charges. In Manhattan, Trump is looking at felony charges over alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has accused Trump of seeking to interfere with the results of the 2020 election. The Justice Department’s special counsel, Jack Smith, brought two cases against Trump, one involving classified documents and the other stemming from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Last week, a New York judge ordered Trump to pay $354 million in his civil fraud case involving allegations that Trump improperly inflated the value of his property holdings. And in Colorado, Trump is fighting to keep his name on the presidential primary ballot in Colorado after the state Supreme Court ruled he couldn't appear on the ballot, citing the 14th Amendment. The latter case is now in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court. The cases Trump is facing “paint a picture of a weaponized justice system,” according to Kyle Brosnan, chief counsel for the Oversight Project at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) “You have these rogue prosecutors in local jurisdictions in Atlanta and New York, and the attorney general of New York I’d throw in there, too, allocating vast amounts of resources to go after [Trump] when that's not really their job,” Brosnan said. He pointed to rising crime in cities such as New York and Atlanta as issues that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Willis should be focusing their time and energy on instead. Brosnan joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain where the various cases against Trump currently stand. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Why China Wants You to Drive an EV

China’s economy is struggling: Many young people can't find jobs, the nation’s real estate market is in trouble after two major property development companies failed, and China's stock market has seen a $7 trillion decline in just a few years. But Beijing has a plan to do something about it. When the “green energy” movement began, China recognized an opportunity, Erin Walsh explains. Beijing saw an “opening because they don't have oil, so they had to come up with something else,” said Walsh, senior research fellow for international affairs in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation. “Because, how do you electrify and grow, and become No. 1 in the world, which is their goal; how do you do that if you don't have energy,” she asked. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) China has “hijacked the agenda” of the green movement, because the Asian giant is on the forefront of developing electric vehicles, batteries and solar energy, according to Walsh. Walsh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the factors that have led to China’s economic challenges and how Beijing is seeking to overcome its economic woes by further dominating the energy market. Texas vs. Biden: Lone Star State’s Battle to Secure the Border

When it became increasingly clear that the federal government was not going to stop the flow of illegal aliens across the border, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began taking strategic action. “You look at the results, and they speak for themselves,” Brent Smith says of what Abbott has done to slow the flood of illegal crossings. Smith serves as the county attorney for Kinney County, Texas, which borders Mexico and is about 130 miles west of San Antonio. Because of the enormous influx of illegal aliens crossing the border, Smith says, “Everything has changed” in his community. “People now, when you hear a helicopter flying in the air, kids know to run home,” Smith said. “And if you hear sirens, 99% of the time, it has to do with illegal immigration.” Even schools have "military barriers around them" to prevent smugglers from driving through the campus, he added. The county attorney also said his workload has multiplied many times over as frequent arrests of illegal aliens are made in the county. According to Smith, “preventing the entry, repelling them at the river” is the way to address the crisis. That's what Abbott has done in Eagle Pass, Texas, at Shelby Park. Under Abbott’s leadership, the Texas National Guard is preventing the Border Patrol from processing illegal aliens in Shelby Park, which is on the Rio Grande and which served as a popular crossing point until Texas assumed control of it. The Texas National Guard has laid concertina wire fencing along the riverbank and built a 4,500-foot border wall using shipping containers topped with sharp razor wire to repel illegal crossings. Because crossings into Shelby Park have fallen to almost none, Smith says, Abbott will likely “expand the tactic that he's using in Shelby Park to other places.” Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been critical of Abbott’s recent tactics and has previously taken legal action against the governor's efforts to secure the border. Smith joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ongoing legal tensions between Texas and the federal government, and what could be next as the border crisis continues to unfold. Enjoy the show!
