Unraveling the Damage Done by Our Welfare System

Education, employment, and family formation are “the building blocks for a flourishing life,” says the leader of the Georgia Center for Opportunity. But, unfortunately, America’s welfare system includes penalties for both work and family formation, Randy Hicks says. Although the safety net may not intend to punish work or the family, Hicks says, it does that through policies that reward Americans with financial benefits for earning less or remaining single. Among all the states, Utah has created a model for a strong welfare system, he says. Utah integrated its workforce services with welfare services in the 1990s, so when an individual seeks government assistance, the first step is to help him re-enter the workforce, if he is able, before providing monetary benefits. But around the year 2000, the federal government passed a law that made it almost impossible for states to integrate workforce and welfare services as Utah did. To change this situation, Hicks says, the Georgia Center for Opportunity and the Alliance for Opportunity advocate congressional legislation to "give states the flexibility to do what Utah did: integrate workforce and welfare so that we're not compartmentalizing someone's life but viewing it holistically and viewing it all as simply a means to a flourishing life that includes work.” Hicks joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the path to restoring the value of education, work, and family in America. Arabella Network's Leftist 'Dark Money' Influence Expanding, Author Reveals

The left-wing Arabella Advisors network has raked in more money than either of the two major political parties and affects almost every element of public policy and elections, argues Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center, a Washington-based investigative think tank. Walter's new book “Arabella: The Dark Money Network of Leftist Billionaires Secretly Transforming America” shows that in the 2020 election cycle, Arabella Advisors' nonprofits took in $2.4 billion. That's $1 billion more than the combined fundraising of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee. That amount rose to $3 billion in the 2022 election cycle, Walter says. Moreover, he adds, nothing on the Right comes close to competing. Listen to Walter outline Arabella's reach in a discussion of his book on today's podcast. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. 101 of Trump’s Presidential Immunity Case Before Supreme Court

The nine Supreme Court justices have a major question before them. Is a current or former president immune from prosecution? Former President Donald Trump is facing prosecution for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump argues that his actions as president are protected from prosecution under presidential immunity. Trump lawyer John Sauer argued Thursday before the Supreme Court that unless a president is first impeached and convicted by the Senate, he is immune from prosecution, explains John Malcolm, senior legal fellow and vice president for the Institute for Constitutional Government at The Heritage Foundation. (Heritage founded The Daily Signal in 2014.) Now, Malcolm says, the justices have to answer three questions in order to make a decision in the Trump case: One, is there a blanket immunity for a president's official actions because he was not impeached and convicted by the Senate? Two, what is a private action and what is an official action? And three, if the court rejects John Sauer’s, absolute immunity argument, will there be any other kind of immunity that might attach to an official action? Malcolm joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. What's Really Driving the Antisemitic Protests on College Campuses

Pro-Palestine protests on the campuses of some of America's most elite colleges have resulted in hundreds of arrests and led Columbia University in New York to move classes online for the remainder of the semester. The pro-Hamas, anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, Yale, and New York University aren't just representative of an “antisemitic movement,” but a “fundamentally an anti-Western and anti-American movement,” Bill Jacobson says. Jacobson, a Cornell University law professor and the founder of Legal Insurrection and the Equal Protection Project, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain who or what is driving the antisemitism on America’s college campuses. Jacobson points to the activist organization National Students for Justice in Palestine as the organizing force behind the current protests. “They are an organization I have followed and written about for well over a decade,” Jacobson says of the pro-Palestine group. “They support terrorists. They honor people like Rasmea Odeh, who killed two Jewish students in Jerusalem.” Jacobson points to the ideology of critical race theory, which has spread across college campuses, for this rise in antisemitism. The related push for "diversity, equity, and inclusion," or DEI, is fundamentally anti-colonialism, Jacobson says, explaining that Israel is viewed by antisemites as “colonial occupiers.” The anti-Israel and anti-American sentiment likely will continue on college campuses, he says, because “unless you are going to change the faculty at these schools, unless you are going to change the fundamental ideologies which drive them, removing students from the courtyard isn't going to change a thing.” Enjoy the show! Ohio Attorney General Breaks Down Leftist Legal 'Trick' to Block GOP Efforts to Protect Kids

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is not going to allow one lone judge to dictate whether the children of Ohio are protected from “transgender” surgeries and hormones, he shared in an interview with The Daily Signal. Yost asked the state’s Supreme Court to intervene after Judge Michael Holbrook issued a temporary restraining order for House Bill 68, the Saving Ohio Adolescents From Experimentation, or SAFE, Act, on Tuesday. That law bars physicians from performing “transgender reassignment” surgeries on children and from prescribing cross-sex hormones or drugs to block children’s puberty. It also would allow students to sue if they are deprived of a fair playing field in sports due to transgender activism (such as a boy who “identifies” as a girl playing on a girls’ volleyball team) and would protect parents’ rights to raise their children according to their biological sex. A supermajority of Republican lawmakers voted to override Gov. Mike DeWine’s controversial veto of the bill in January, and before Holbrook blocked it, it was scheduled to go into effect on April 24. On Monday, Yost, the Medical Board of Ohio, and the state of Ohio filed an emergency motion for a writ of prohibition, asking that Holbrook be ordered to modify his temporary restraining order to “comply with Ohio statutory and procedural limitations.” The Ohio attorney general discussed the move and what he hopes will ensue from here in an interview with The Daily Signal. Is Upheaval In House Coming After Passage of $60 Billion for Ukraine?

The House passed a four-bill $95 billion foreign aid package over the weekend that includes $60 billion in additional aid for Ukraine. The bill could cost House Speaker Mike Johnson his job. The aid package passed in a 311-112 vote with the unanimous support of Democrats and 101 Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., threatened to introduce a motion to remove Johnson, R-La., from his position as speaker if he brought the funding for Ukraine to the House floor for a vote. “I think she's looking at the totality of what's come across the floor over the past few months, and she is expressing extreme disappointment with that,” Ryan Walker, executive vice president of Heritage Action for America, says of Greene. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation, of which Heritage Action is the grassroots arm.) Greene left Washington at the end of last week without introducing the motion to vacate the speaker but said during an interview Sunday on Fox News that she still planned to try to oust Johnson. “Mike Johnson’s speakership is over,” Greene said on “Sunday Morning Futures,” adding, “He needs to do the right thing—to resign and allow us to move forward in a controlled process. If he doesn’t do so, he will be vacated.” Less than one year after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the role, Capitol Hill is bracing for the potential of another speakership battle when Congress returns to Washington next week. Walker joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the reason for the sharp divide in Congress over the foreign aid package and the likelihood Johnson will face removal as speaker. Walker also explains where Congress is getting the money to send to Ukraine. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. This Passover, as Middle East Tensions Rise, Jews Remember ‘God Saves Us’

During the first night of Passover, Jewish homes gather around a Seder meal and remember how God delivered the Jewish people from Egypt, and that God has always rescued His people, author and lecturer Rabbi Pinchas Taylor explains. “We say that we recognize that in every generation, there are nations that have come against us, that seek to destroy us, and that each and every generation, God saves us from their plot,” the rabbi says. Passover begins at sundown on Monday night, and following Hamas’ attack on Israel in October, and this month's attack by Iran, the reminder that God saves His people, “that's going to be something that resonates quite a bit extra this year,” Taylor says. (Passover runs through sundown on April 30.) Taylor joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” as Passover begins to explain safety concerns in the Jewish community amid a rise in antisemitism after Oct. 7, and to discuss how Americans can support the Jewish people right now. Want a Faith-Filled Nation Back? Build the Family

There’s a direct link between being raised in a family with a mom and dad present and a commitment to faith, according to the president and founder of Communio, a nonprofit that equips churches to work for the renewal of healthy relationships, marriages, and the family. “Many pastors don't know that 80% of everybody sitting in the pews on Sunday morning come from a home where mom and dad stayed continuously married,” says Communio's J.P. De Gance. After working in public policy and politics in Washington, D.C., De Gance says he began to see that “so much of what's going on wrong in our country flows from the collapse of family and faith.” He started Communio to come alongside churches to help them identify how they can foster healthy families and marriages, and to equip singles with the tools to create those thriving relationships in the future, with a goal toward furthering the Gospel in America. De Gance joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why an American revival of faith requires a restoration of the family. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. What’s Riding on a Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Case Before Supreme Court? Legal Expert Explains

The Supreme Court will determine the fate of a major Jan. 6 Capitol riot-related case. The ruling could affect hundreds of people who were in the Capitol that day in 2021, and at the center of the case is the applicability of a federal statute. The Justice Department has been using a statute enacted in the early 2000s to prosecute those in the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The statute makes it a crime to “obstruct or impede or influence an official proceeding or attempt to do so,” according to Seth Lucas, a senior research associate with the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) During oral arguments Tuesday, the justices appeared skeptical that the statute could be applied and used in the Jan. 6 cases the way it has been. “It was clear that enough justices were skeptical of the government's expansive reading of Section 1512(c) [of the statute in question] to make a reasonable guess that they're probably going to read the statute a little more narrowly,” Lucas said. Lucas joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the details of the case and what the ruling will mean for those men and women who are facing charges for their actions on Jan. 6. Enjoy the show! Stopping Illegal Aliens From Squatting in US Homes

A new bill in Congress would stop illegal aliens from squatting in U.S. homes. “We're trying to get out in front of it to protect American homeowners,” Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., says. Leonel Moreno, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, recently went viral on social media after a video post explaining how to take advantage of squatting laws in the U.S. Under U.S. law, Moreno told his followers that “if a house is not inhabited, we can seize it.” In response to the video, and growing reports over illegal aliens squatting in homes in New York and his state of Pennsylvania, Meuser introduced the Safeguarding Homes from Illegal Entry, Living, and Dwelling Act, or the SHIELD Act. The bill makes trespassing “a deportable crime,” Meuser says. “So if an illegal were to claim squatter rights and enter an individual's home illegally without any rental paperwork or legitimate lease” then, Meuser says “they can be arrested and deported and prohibited from ever entering the United States again.” Meuser joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the growing need for the SHIELD Act, and what, if anything, he anticipates President Joe Biden will do to address growing concern over the crisis at the southern border. Iran, Israel, and Middle East: Is War Imminent?

Israeli leaders say the nation will respond to Iran’s weekend attack, but what that response will entail remains unclear. “I can see a number of scenarios in which this does escalate to a regional and potentially even a global conflict,” says a former member of the National Security Council, Robert Greenway, adding, “I can see fewer ways in which we prevent that from occurring.” Over the weekend, Iran launched about 300 drones and missiles at Israel. Unlike other attacks, this was not carried out by proxy terrorist groups in the region, but the nation of Iran itself. If a larger conflict in the Middle East is to be avoided, says Greenway, who also serves as director of the Center for National Defense at The Heritage Foundation, the U.S. will need “to radically alter its policy and approach toward Iran and Israel.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) U.S. policy changes toward Iran should include “to deny it the resources necessary, and to restore deterrence, with the support of Israel and our partners and allies,” Greenway says. Greenway joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what options Israel has as it considered retaliation against Iran, and how U.S. Middle East foreign policy is affecting the conflict. Why Criminal Case Against Trump Is 'Bogus,' Legal Expert Explains

Among all the legal charges facing former President Donald Trump, the criminal case out of New York City that begins Monday “is the most bogus,” according to legal expert Hans von Spakovsky. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump in 2023 with 34 counts of falsifying business records supposedly to cover up “hush money” payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. “This case is just bogus from start to finish,” Von Spakovsky says, adding, “It's in Manhattan. It's a Manhattan jury, and I'll tell you, quite frankly, I think if the DA charged Donald Trump with eating a ham sandwich, the jury would find him guilty.” Jury selection in the case begins on Monday, but concerns have been raised as to whether it’s even possible to find an unbiased jury in Manhattan. Von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow and manager of the Election Law Reform Initiative at The Heritage Foundation, says he thinks the jury is “going to find him guilty, regardless of the facts and regardless of the law.” If Trump is found guilty, and even if he faces time in prison, that will not legally impede the former president from continuing to run for reelection, or even serving as president, given that the Constitution does not address that, the legal expert explains. Von Spakovsky joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain what he expects to see during the case, and what will happen next if the jury does find Trump guilty. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Exposing Corruption in FBI: Whistleblowers Tell Their Stories

Garret O'Boyle and Stephen Friend dedicated years of their lives to serving their country in the FBI. But when they began to question some of the decisions being made within the bureau, they were suspended. After joining the FBI, O'Boyle says he “immediately saw that other agents [and] supervisors didn't have a solid grasp of people's civil rights.” “Having sworn that oath to the Constitution multiple times—twice in the Army, once as a police officer, once as an FBI agent,” O'Boyle said, “it actually meant something to me—which, I think, it doesn't to many, maybe even to most at this point. It's just a job. O'Boyle explained that FBI agents take a constitutional law course at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and that for him, following and protecting constitutional rights “was most important to me,” adding that “foolishly … I thought that would be the case for everybody entering into this type of field.” After questioning some of the decisions being made within the FBI, O'Boyle was unexpectedly suspended from the bureau in 2022. Friend has a story similar to O'Boyle's. Rep. Dan Bishop: Weaponization of Federal Government Is Growing

The list of alleged instances of a weaponized federal government is getting longer, Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., says. “The problem of the federal government being weaponized against the American people's fundamental constitutional rights is pervasive and it seems, although I think we've done some things good to uncover and deter it, it is a constant problem and growing,” Bishop says. As recent examples, the North Carolina Republican points to instances of the White House's asking social media companies to censor content related to COVID-19 vaccines and to the FBI's misusing database information against Americans. The crisis at America’s southern border, Bishop says, is another way government has been weaponized against the American people during the Biden administration. Bishop joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to detail these instances of government weaponization and what Congress can do to stop the abuse. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Sen. Roger Marshall: What to Expect When Senate Receives Mayorkas Impeachment Articles

Two months ago, the House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Next week, the Senate will receive the two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is expected to dismiss the charges just as quickly as he receives them. “Schumer is going to table it,” Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., says of the impeachment articles. The articles were originally expected to be delivered to the Senate Wednesday, but some Senate Republicans ask House Speaker Mike Johnson to delay the delivery until next week. Fox News reports that the benefit of delaying the delivery of the articles allows more time for debate without the time restraint of the coming weekend. Schumer has not indicated he plans to change his position on the articles of impeachment if they arrive next week instead of Wednesday. If Schumer does dismisses the charges against Mayorkas, it will be a historic first, according to Marshall. Marshall joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the Senate’s expected course of action on the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, and to explain what course of action remains for conservative lawmakers seeking to secure America’s borders. Will the 'Invisible Hand' Finally Stop Doctors From Putting Kids on Experimental Gender Drugs?

Doctors across the country have seemingly thrown caution to the wind, prescribing experimental drugs to block puberty and to chemically alter young people's bodies in the name of a nebulous gender identity, but rising rates for medical malpractice insurance may cause them to think twice. "If the Hippocratic oath, if basic high school ninth grade biology, if the moral natural law theory of human beings being image-bearers of God, if none of that will convince doctors that this is a bad idea, and it takes their own economic self-interest, that might be a sad commentary on the practice of medicine, but I'll take it, right?” Latham Watts, vice president of public affairs at the nonprofit law firm Alliance Defending Freedom, tells “The Daily Signal Podcast.” Enjoy the show! Michael Barone: Understanding the Founding Fathers’ ‘Mental Maps’

The places where they were raised and to which they traveled formed the Founding Fathers’ geographic orientation, which influenced their view of the nation and what the country could become, according to Michael Barone. While George Washington had “a map that goes north by northwest,” Thomas Jefferson “saw the country from [the] perspective of the West,” says Barone, a senior political analyst for The Washington Examiner and a co-author of The Almanac of American Politics since its first edition in 1972. In his new book, “Mental Maps of the Founders: How Geographic Imagination Guided America's Revolutionary Leaders,” Barone explains how the differing “mental maps” of Founders such as Washington, Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton were sometimes in opposition, but together formed our great nation. Barone joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the little-known facts about the Founding Fathers he uncovered while researching the new book. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers: Time for Senate to Pass TikTok Bill

There is a rare bipartisan agreement in Washington D.C. around the social media app TikTok. The app’s parent company, ByteDance, is headquartered in Beijing and is subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make their users’ data available to the Chinese Communist Party. In March, the House passed a bill in a 352-65 vote, with the help of 197 Republicans and 155 Democrats, that gives TikTok a choice: either break from ByteDance or cease to operate in the U.S. Biden says he will sign the bill if it land on his desk, so that just leaves the Senate. “I'm hopeful that the Senate will act swiftly,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., says. “I believe that it is important that they do to address this immediate threat and get this on the president's desk. This legislation is our best chance to end the Chinese Communist Party's abuse of these apps that are targeting, surveilling, and manipulating Americans.” McMorris Rodgers, who also serves as chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain where the bill stands and why TikTok poses a threat to national security interests. Climate Expert Shares Dirty Truth About Wind and Solar Energy

Wind, solar, and electric vehicles aren't the clean energy accomplishments that many claim, climatologist David Legates says. “The lithium, the atrium, all of the rare earth minerals that are necessary for the batteries, that are necessary for the solar panels, that are necessary for the wind turbines … are called rare earths,” Legates explains on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” These rare earth minerals are acquired through strip mining, he says, a process that involves putting large chunks of earth into a solution. Once the minerals are extracted, what is left is a “toxic sludge lake." The process of strip mining changes the environment, adds Legates, a visiting fellow who serves on the Science Advisory Committee for the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. Legates, also a professor emeritus at the University of Delaware, is the author of a Heritage paper on rising sea levels. Legates, who joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast," explains how wind turbines and solar panels are created and discusses his new book “Climate and Energy: The Case for Realism,” co-authored with E. Calvin Beisner. He also identifies what the cleanest form of energy really is. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Addict's Shot at Redemption on Trump Campaign

Tim Murtaugh became a familiar face to many Americans as President Donald Trump’s communications director for his 2020 reelection campaign. As one of Trump’s most visible spokesmen, Murtaugh had a front-row seat to the most-watched campaign in history. But just a mere four years earlier, Murtaugh found himself in a much different spot. After struggling with alcoholism for years, he was jailed in 2015 for public drunkenness and unsure of his fate. That’s when he decided to give up alcohol and focus on turning his life around. Murtaugh would go on to work for Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue before joining Trump’s reelection campaign. Today, he’s running his own communications firm. Why Nonprofits Serving Homeless Should STOP Taking Government Money

After spending years serving the needs of the poor and homeless through nonprofit ministry, James Whitford says he learned that “it's good for nonprofits … to stay away from government funding.” Whitford, the co-founder and CEO of True Charity, a national initiative to reform charity work, started serving the poor through a ministry called Watered Gardens Ministries in Joplin, Missouri, over two decades ago. Over time, he has crafted a model for how nonprofits can best serve the needs of the poor and actually be a part of solving the homeless crisis. Step one, according to Whitford, is declining government funding because it reduces fundraising efforts, which disengages local donations, and “those local donors are often volunteers as well,” he tells “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “So there's a kind of a symbiosis between the local donor and being a volunteer,” according to Whitford. “Sometimes it's a volunteer first that becomes a donor. Sometimes it's a donor that becomes a volunteer. But the last thing we want to do is crowd out local involvement in the work.” Nonprofits working with the poor also need to measure the “impact, not just outputs, but outcomes,” of the work they are doing, he says. And finally, “nonprofit leaders need to embrace work for their clients.” Whitford joins the podcast to explain how nonprofits can create a sustainable model to address homelessness and poverty in their communities. Tim Carney on America's Baby Bust

How could America shift so babies were more welcomed, less dreaded? Tim Carney, author of the new book “Family Unfriendly: How Our Culture Made Raising Kids Much Harder Than It Needs to Be,” has a few ideas. He’d like to see corporations offer parents their child’s birthday off every year. He wants parents to not work so hard at parenting—and to never, ever, sign up their kids for a travel sports team. He’d like to see local governments prioritize sidewalks and denser housing, which would make neighborhoods safer for kids. But he also wants us to think about why we have a falling birth rate—and what it says about us. After World War II, America had a baby boom, while Germany experienced a baby bust. Now, we’re struggling with our own baby bust, even as we are hammered by relentless discussions of America’s failures, the threat of climate change, and more. “The spirit of the age now is what I call civilizational sadness,” says Carney. “And the sadness is a belief that we’re just not good or that humans were a mistake.” Enjoy the show! Terrorist Threat to US ‘Has Not Been at This Level for Decades,’ Expert Warns
