Where Security Went Wrong: Sheriff Responds to Assassination Attempt on Trump
It makes “absolutely no sense” that the roof of the building from which the gunman fired was not secured by the Secret Service, Dodge County, Wisconsin, Sheriff Dale Schmidt told The Daily Signal in an interview discussing the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Following the attempt on Trump’s life during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle sat down for an interview with ABC News and said there were safety concerns with regard to stationing agents on the roof the shooter used because it was “a sloped roof.” But Schmidt points out that the countersnipers that were on a roof behind the president were also on a sloped roof. “When you look at a location from a security standpoint, you're going to be standing where that dignitary is ahead of time and saying, ‘Where are the potential vulnerabilities?’” Schmidt said. “And I can tell you if I was on that roof, I could have made that shot. It is not a difficult shot to make.” Schmidt sat down with The Daily Signal at the Republican National Convention last week in Milwaukee, to discuss the security failures at the Trump campaign rally just days earlier. Security Expert: Trump Was ‘a Gust of Wind Away’ From Being Assassinated
Security expert Brian Cavanaugh says former President Donald Trump was “a gust of wind away” from being assassinated on July 13th. “To have a round pierce your ear, which is attached to your head, we're talking less than two millimeters away,” says Cavanaugh, a senior vice president at American Global Strategies. For a bullet to come so close to taking the former president’s life, Cavanaugh said it causes one to think Trump was saved through “divine intervention.” Cavanaugh formerly served as executive director for Strategic Planning and Integration for the Department of Homeland Security’s Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office. During a conversation with “The Daily Signal Podcast” at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last week, Cavanaugh assessed the security failures of the Secret Service following the attemp on the former president’s life during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, 33 miles north of Pittsburgh. The building that the shooter targeted Trump from was about 150 yards away from the stage where Trump was speaking, according to Cavanaugh, who called it “absolutely baffling” that the building was not part of the Secret Service’s inner security perimeter. Kimberly Cheatle, director of the Secret Service, will testify before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, amid calls for her resignation following the attempt on Trump’s life. The shooter fired multiple shots, shirking Trump in the right ear. It remains unclear how the gunman, who was killed, was not seen and neutralized by authorities prior to opening fire. “At some point we may find out what happened on Saturday,” Carlson says. Why Former Obama Fundraiser Now Backs Trump
Allison Huynh was a fundraiser for then-Sen. Barack Obama before he was elected president in 2008, but she now supports former President Donald Trump. Huynh (pronounced like “win”) and her husband were attracted to Obama’s message of “hope and change” in 2007. “It was the hope and the image that he projected” that led Huynh to not only support Obama herself in the 2008 election, but encourage others to do likewise. As an entrepreneur and successful computer scientist in Silicon Valley in California, Huynh hosted fundraising dinners for Obama with tickets costing $50,000 a plate. But after Obama won the election and took office in 2009, Huynh says, disillusionment began to set in. A Vietnamese immigrant, Huynh says the disillusionment “started with Barack Obama and this lack of logic in terms of how he led,” but it didn't end there. Huynh calls diversity, equity, and inclusion “Marxist and doublespeak” because “equity is what you get when you work for something.” Equity is not won because of the “color of your skin” or “identity politics,” Huynh contends. “This doesn't make sense. It erodes away from what it is to be an American, right?” Asked why she is now supporting Trump, Huynh says that after meeting Trump, she found him “very open” to considering policies that serve tech entrepreneurs like her. ‘It’s Going to Be Catastrophic’: Why the Next Pandemic Will Be Worse Than COVID
The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans to prepare for the next pandemic, which he fears will be more catastrophic than COVID-19. Dr. Robert Redfield, a virologist who continues to treat patients suffering from COVID, oversaw the CDC’s initial response to the pandemic and served as a member of the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force under former President Donald Trump. "We are going to have another pandemic," Redfield told The Daily Signal. "I do believe it's going to be much more catastrophic than the COVID pandemic." Redfield predicted the next pandemic would be the bird flu, also known as H5N1. Its mortality rate is significantly higher than COVID: 52% of the 888 infected patients with H5N1 have died since 2003. "COVID's mortality was about 0.6%," Redfield said. "Bird flu's mortality is going to be north of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%. It's going to be catastrophic." With more than 100 million chickens and turkeys already infected in the United States, Redfield said bird flu has also been found in 27 different mammals. And while there remains a low risk of infecting humans right now, another mishap like the COVID lab leak could quickly expedite bird flu's transmission. "This is why I've called for a moratorium on gain-of-function research until we can have a broader public debate about it," he said. "I'm not convinced it needs to be done. I don't think there's really any benefit from it. Some of my colleagues disagree with me, but I think we shouldn't do it until we know how we do it in a safe, responsible, and effective way and we clearly can't do that at the present time." How Police Found Illegal Alien Accused of Raping, Murdering Maryland Mother
Harford County, Maryland, Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler says he doesn't wonder if another American will become the victim of a violent crime at the hands of an illegal alien, but rather, when. “I don't ask myself if it's going to happen. I just ask when it's going to happen,” Gahler said, adding that as was recently the case in his own community, it's often women who are the victims of “this failure of the federal immigration system.” The sheriff received notification on Aug. 5, 2023, that a woman had gone missing. Rachel Morin, a mother of five, had left to run errands and to exercise on a local trail, but never returned home. The next day, law enforcement found her body off the trail in a culvert. An investigation involving local, state, and federal authorities was launched, and in June, Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal alien from El Salvador, was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and charged in the rape and murder of Morin. Martinez-Hernandez, 23, crossed the U.S. southern border illegally in February 2023, according to Gahler. “The current administration came in with a message of 'come to our country, the borders are open,' Gahler said, adding “way too many people heard that, too many criminals, too many terrorists listen loud and clear, and they did just that.” Gahler joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the investigation that led to Martinez-Hernandez’s arrest, and what the Biden administration can and should do to prevent the loss of future American lives at the hands of illegal immigrants. New Angel Studios’ Film Brings Message of Adoption and Hope to Big Screen
It’s a story that needed to be told, says “Sound of Hope” writer and producer Rebekah Weigel, because Possum Trot is not just another small Texas community near the Louisiana border, but a town that chose to live out God's command to care for the orphan. "This is such an amazing story," says Weigel, an adoptive mother herself, adding, "we need to see more churches step in" the way that Bennett Chapel Missionary Baptist Church did. Back in the 1990s, W.C. Martin, the pastor of the small church in Possum Trot, and wife Donna felt the Lord call them to adopt a child. Martin began preaching to his rural church about what the Bible says about adoption, and the congregation was moved to action. In total, 22 families in the church adopted 77 of the hardest-to-place children in the foster care system. "There's probably only a couple hundred people in the community of Possum Trot, an unincorporated area," Weigel says, "but, you know, they took it seriously, and they did it together as a community. And I think that's something I really loved about this story, was just the sense of doing it together, like bearing each other's burdens, and, you know, when one was weak, they came together, and they helped each other, and I think we need more of that." Now, the inspirational story of what happened years ago in the little community of Possum Trot is hitting the big screen on July 4 in the feature film “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot.” Angel Studios is distributing the film. How GOP Lawmakers Plan to Strip Government of All DEI Programs
A group of Republican lawmakers is working to strip all DEI programs out of the government through legislation they call the Dismantle DEI Act. “This bill goes through the federal government and works to remove the officers, the programs” centered on DEI, or diversity, equity, and inclusion, Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, says. Cloud and Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, along with 20 other members of Congress, introduced the Dismantle DEI Act to end the use of taxpayer money to fund programs that Cloud says are discriminatory in nature. DEI programs “make race the very first lens in which you interpret everything,” Cloud said, adding that millions in taxpayer dollars are being spent on something that “produces no value for anyone.” Cloud joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how the Dismantle DEI Act would work if passed and enacted. Long before Hamas’ horrific Oct. 7 attack on Israel, the Jewish homeland was already a flash point of controversy on college campuses and among an increasingly anti-Israel segment of younger Americans who make up Gen Z. Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries, had taken note of the troubling trend and embarked on a trip to Israel just about 100 days after the Oct. 7 attack to meet with Jews and Arabs, peace activists, and soldiers. He’s now written a new book, “Should Christians Support Israel? Seeking a Biblical Worldview in an Impossible Situation,” which Summit Ministries is making available for free with a donation. “Jews have a physical presence in the land of their history,” Myers said. “Whether you agree with how it happened or how they are stewarding it, this is the reality. It is also a reality that Israel is under attack from every quarter in a battle between competing worldviews. The history of Palestine, the religion of Islam, and the aims of the apocalyptic rape-and-death cult called Hamas all figure in a larger struggle for truth.
