Drug Crisis That Kills 75,000 Americans Annually Should Be Central to Election, Arizona Sheriff Says
It’s not the people flooding across the southern border affecting Arizonans, but rather what some of the illegal immigrants carry with them. Illegal aliens don’t stay in his state, according to Pinal County, Arizona Sheriff Mark Lamb. Instead, they travel to “California, Massachusetts, New York, Chicago, Iowa, Alabama,” the sheriff rattles off. “But what we are feeling is, just like every state and every American family, we're feeling the effects of fentanyl,” he said. An estimated 74,702 people died from fentanyl poisoning in America in 2023, a slight decline from the 76,226 fentanyl related deaths in 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lamb argues that the fentanyl crisis should be discussed more in the news and during the 2024 presidential election but is not because “to talk about it would mean you'd have to accept responsibility to it, and to accept the responsibility would cost you an election.” The Harris campaign did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment. The sheriff joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what to expect on election night in Arizona, one of seven swing states, and the role the border crisis is playing the way Americans are voting this election. What to Know About Latest Russia-North Korea Alliance
Russia and North Korea have a long history of partnership, but it is unclear if the relationship “is a true alliance or more a marriage of convenience,” according to Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation. “The longer it goes on, it seems a bit more of an alliance,” Klingner says. “The two leaders, [Vladimir] Putin and Kim [Jong Un], signed a strategic partnership agreement earlier this year where they pledged to help defend each other, and Putin has sort of cited that as a reason for justifying North Korean troops being there because they're defending Russia against attacks by not only Ukraine, but he claims NATO,” Klingner explains. The Pentagon announced Monday that North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to aid in Russia’s fight against Ukraine. In exchange for troops, Klingner says North Korea is receiving “funding, getting cash, both direct and indirectly, likely food deliveries, fuel deliveries, and what is particularly worrisome is concerns that it may also be getting military technology.” Klingner joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the relationship between Russia and North Korea and what the two countries' latest partnership means for the war in Ukraine. When Will We Know Who Won the Election?
It’s a race to 270. With just six days until the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are seeking to motivate voters in key swing states across the nation in hopes of picking up enough support to earn 270 electoral votes and claim victory. Trump will speak to voters Wednesday afternoon in North Carolina’s 1st District, a region that is anticipated to determine which candidates win the state’s 16 electoral votes. Harris will only be an hour away, holding a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition to North Carolina, states to watch on election night include Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia. And Heritage Action for America Executive Vice President Ryan Walker argues that Harris should not count on winning Virginia, despite the fact that President Joe Biden easily carried the state in 2020. The razor-thin margins in the swing states indicate that it may take several days for the American people to know who their next president will be, and some states, like Nevada, pose a unique challenge to determining a winner. On Monday, the Nevada Supreme Court affirmed a lower court decision that mail-in ballots with no postmark can be received and counted until three days after the election. There is, however, a chance the winner will be known on election night, according to Walker. "I think that the energy and enthusiasm gap is such this year that we'll know a significant amount of information going into Election Day," Walker said. "And if we can extrapolate those numbers and compare them to Election Day results in previous years or get some initial data on exit polling, there is a chance that the winner could be declared on election night despite some of these states having late arrival votes that they're still counting." Walker joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the key issues on the minds of voters this election, and to predict when the presidential election will be called. Learn more about your ad choices. Media Bias EXPOSED: The Stories They Won’t Tell You About Kamala Harris
Four years ago, news organizations and social media platforms deliberately suppressed or outright ignored the Hunter Biden laptop story—one of the biggest scandals of the 2020 election. This time around, those same media outlets are engaged in a different kind of censorship: hiding the radical policy ideas once advocated by Vice President Kamala Harris. A new poll from Media Research Center confirms even Harris’ most ardent supporters don’t know her extreme positions on everything from defunding police and co-sponsoring the Green New Deal to legalizing drugs and supporting open borders. Brent Bozell, MRC's founder and president, spoke with The Daily Signal about the shocking findings. He also recounted the impact of burying the Biden laptop story. A postelection poll in 2020 found that if voters knew about the controversy, they would've backed then-President Donald Trump. "Trump would have won 317 electoral votes with ease. It would have been a massive landslide, but that's just the states we polled," Bozell said. "He would have won a landslide on the order of Ronald Reagan had they only known about the laptop." Bozell warned the media could have a similar impact on the 2024 presidential election by ignoring the most controversial aspects of Harris' policy positions. "The media delivered the victory to Joe Biden in 2020," Bozell said. "If she wins, it will be because they delivered the victory to her." Listen to the full interview with Bozell to learn more about the poll, his take on the presidential debates, and why Democrats are more likely to undermine the First Amendment. The Conservative Argument for Bitcoin
For conservatives, it is not surprising that bitcoin is an appealing technology, according to Dennis Porter. Bitcoin is “truly nonpartisan,” says Porter, CEO and co-founder of the Satoshi Action Fund, but within the technology, “there are so many things that I think appeal to the conservative voter or Republican voters,” he argues. Bitcoin is unique because it’s “money which can't be debased,” the CEO of the pro-bitcoin policy organization says. There are only 21 million bitcoin in existence and no more can be created, protecting the digital currency against inflation. “I think also beyond that is this idea of individual freedom,” Porter says. “You are able to operate wholly on your own with no third parties, without asking permission,” he says adding, “you are able to access the bitcoin network globally, anywhere in the world and be able to participate in the economy without asking permission.” Porter joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the future of bitcoin use and how the currency is playing a role in the 2024 presidential election. US-Israel Intel Leak: What We Know
The Pentagon is looking into the leak of intelligence information related to an upcoming Israeli attack on Iran. It was America's responsibility to keep the information safe, officials say. The leak likely has “deeply” damaged U.S.-Israeli relations during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, says Victoria Coates, Heritage Foundation vice president in charge of the Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy. The leak is “very, very concerning,” she says. After Iran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles Oct. 1 at Israel, the Jewish state announced that it would respond. The leaked documents don't include specific targets that Israel plans to strike, but do include surveillance information. Release of that information "definitely" has changed Israel’s original response plan, Coates says. “The Iranians clearly have this information,” she says. “We don't know what other information they have, and so I think Israel can and should take the time they need to develop an alternative plan.” Coates joins this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how the U.S. will find the leaker, and what the Biden-Harris administration can do to repair relations with Israel. She also talks about Israel’s strategy in attacking the financial assets of a second terrorist group, Hezbollah, just north of the Jewish state in Lebanon. Learn more about your ad choices. How AI Is Testing the ‘Bounds of the First Amendment’
Artificial intelligence technology is making its way into more areas of daily life. But there are still many unknowns about AI, including major legal questions about the ways the technology should be governed, and which AI-generated speech is, or is not, protected under the First Amendment. Generative AI, in its most basic form, is “trained on vast amounts of data,” according to Ryan Bangert, senior vice president of strategic initiatives at Alliance Defending Freedom. “It ingests petabytes of information in order to learn how human language works, in order to understand how it is that human syntax grammar is structured, and then it predicts what comes next.” Generative AI is “not a mind, it's not a consciousness, it's not a human being,” Bangert says. “It's a piece of software, a very complex piece of software, that's fulfilling an algorithmic function.” Therefore, he adds, generative AI is “not a First Amendment rights-bearing entity.” In their new paper, “The Ghost in the Machine: How Generative AI Will Test the Bounds of the First Amendment,” Bangert and Jeremy Tedesco, senior vice president of corporate engagement at Alliance Defending Freedom, parse the relationship between AI and the First Amendment. Bangert and Tedesco join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the fight to protect free speech amid rapidly changing AI technology use. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Trump's Unexpected Allies: Are Black and Hispanic Voters Really Ditching Democrats?
Recent polling suggests that some traditionally Democrat-leaning voters, particularly black and Hispanic men, appear to be reconsidering their political allegiances. Their concerns about the high cost of living and rising crime have them trending toward former President Donald Trump, which could make them the deciding factor in the 2024 presidential election. Gabriel Nadales, national director of Our America, spoke with The Daily Signal about these surprising developments—and shared first-hand accounts of why voters are switching sides. Watch our full interview in the video above. “It’s kind of insane that there are so many Hispanic Americans out there who are very much voting for Trump,” Nadales said. “They see that, unfortunately, the Democrat Party no longer represents them.” Nadales’ organization, Our America, is active in the key battleground states of Arizona and Georgia, attempting to unite Americans at a time when it seems we’re hopelessly divided. Our America has organized local events with the goal of inspiring Americans to be active citizens in their local communities. “If you want to affect policy at the national level,” Nadales explained, “you have to get people engaged at the local level with things that they actually can directly affect to show them that they can make a difference in long term.” The group’s core issues are promoting safer communities, lowering the cost of living, defending freedom of speech, and ensuring fair elections. Indiana’s Aggressive Divestment From China
State leaders in Indiana have taken significant steps to divest from China and from the environmental, social, and governance agenda. “We have the good fortune in Indiana to have a Legislature that is on top of making sure that we divest from Chinese entities and from ESG-focused funds,” Indiana state Comptroller Elise Nieshalla says. The ESG agenda has benefited China through its promotion of solar and wind energy, and electric vehicle batteries, all which China mass produces. While some state asset managers are promoting investment in solar panels and EV batteries for electric vehicles in the name of “clean energy,” Nieshalla contends the methods China is using to produce those goods are far from clean. “I think we have seen a true hypocrisy,” she says, “because while … the whole ESG movement has been putting intense pressure on the United States toward renewable energy and to move away from reliable energy—i.e., coal, oil and gas—they are making significant investments in fossil fuels in China, India, Brazil, and [those nations] do not implement the clean energy technology that we do with fossil fuels.” The energy agenda moving away from coal, oil, and gas is not only benefiting China, but also harming the U.S. economy at a time when the U.S. is burdened with a national debt of more than $35 trillion. Nieshalla joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the ways Indiana has successfully divested from China and the ESG agenda, and how other states can follow suit. Learn more about your ad choices. French Teacher Fired for Rejecting Personal Pronouns Wins Lawsuit Almost 6 Years Later
French teacher Peter Vlaming was fired in 2018 for shunning the use of pronouns to refer to a transgender-identifying student. On Sept. 30, the West Point School Board in Virginia agreed to pay him $575,000 in damages and attorneys’ fees. "I'm so relieved that our basic fundamental rights of freedom of expression, of freedom of religion have been formally upheld," Vlaming told The Daily Signal. The School Board cleared Vlaming’s termination from his record and changed its policies to conform to the new Virginia education policies established by Gov. Glenn Youngkin, R-Va. Vlaming is a Christian, so he believes God created male and female. Still, the teacher was willing to respect the rights of his students to disagree. When one of his female students started identifying as male, Vlaming avoided referring to her with pronouns, instead using her preferred name. On Halloween of 2018, his students participated in a virtual reality tour of French catacombs, during which the transgender-identifying student almost ran into a wall. "Don't let her hit the wall!" Vlaming called out instinctively. The student called her parents, who complained to the school. Vlaming was placed on administrative leave and given an ultimatum that he would be fired if he didn't use preferred personal pronouns. Vlaming refused to comply and was fired. Nearly six years later, Vlaming, represented by the religious liberty nonprofit law firm Alliance Defending Freedom, won his case. "Stand your ground with love," Vlaming advises other teachers. "Stand your ground. Live truthfully with love. You'll give others courage as well. At least that's what I hope and pray for." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Why Far-Left Has Worked So Hard to Cancel Christopher Day
The far-left’s obsession with canceling Christopher Columbus does not have as much to do with the man, but rather what he represents, according to historian Jarrett Stepman. Efforts to cancel men like Columbus come from “cultural Marxists who thought that you need to change American culture to truly change our policies at the highest level," says Stepman, a columnist for The Daily Signal and author of "The War on History: The Conspiracy to Rewrite America's Past." Stepman joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the history of Columbus Day and the role the explorer played in the opening of the “transatlantic exchange that led to the creation of the United States.” Learn more about your ad choices. Sticking With Trump: CEO’s Sign Makes a Big Statement in Small-Town America
Anthony Constantino grew up in Amsterdam, New York, at a time when the city was bustling with activity. In the years that followed, however, many of the manufacturing jobs disappeared, leaving its factories empty and its residents without work. Rather than flee upstate New York, Constantino instead co-founded Sticker Mule in 2010. The company makes products ranging from magnets and stickers (hence the name) to buttons and T-shirts. Today, it employs about 1,000 people in the Amsterdam area. And until recently, Sticker Mule was known for its products—not its politics. That changed on the day former President Donald Trump survived an assassin’s bullet. Fed up with the hatred toward Trump, Constantino posted on Sticker Mule’s X account an appeal to “help end the hate.” In that post on the night of July 13, he also declared his support for Trump. "I've been seeing the hate directed at President Trump and his supporters for the last eight years. And I don't like it,” Constantino told The Daily Signal in an interview Friday. “When a bullet hit President Trump, I spoke up, and I've been doing everything I can to try to stop the hate.” Since that fateful night in July, Constantino hasn’t slowed down. This week, he unveiled a massive 100-foot-wide sign atop his Amsterdam factory along the Mohawk River. He spoke with The Daily Signal about the sign—and the controversy that ensued—for a special episode of our podcast. Illuminated in white and red letters, the “Vote for Trump” sign nearly landed Constantino in jail for allegedly violating zoning rules and distracting drivers. “As soon as the local Democrat mayor heard about the excitement and the enthusiasm for the sign, he got a restraining order issued against me, blocking me from displaying the sign under threat of jail time,” Constantino explained. “My lawyer said, Anthony, if you show that sign, you're going to end up in jail. I thought they were joking; they were serious.” A judge’s last-minute order spared him. Monday’s celebration proceeded as planned with thousands of onlookers. Constantino’s new political action committee—Sticker PAC—produced a video casting the controversy as a “fight for free speech.” Even if Constantino’s advocacy for Trump displeases some of Sticker Mule’s customers, the CEO isn’t planning to stay silent when it comes to politics. “I'm very proud of my organization for the way they've handled all this and they've endured all this. They stayed focused on doing exciting things for our customers, exciting things for the business,” he said. “Everyone stuck by my side. We haven't lost a single employee." Constantino told The Daily Signal that he remains motivated to stop the political division in America and bring the country together. He believes Trump is the leader who can do it. Andrew Lewis on Pennsylvania's Potential: 'We Should Be Leading'
Andrew Lewis, a former Pennsylvania state representative, is the new president at the Commonwealth Foundation, the state's premier public policy organization. He stepped into the job in September, just as America turned its attention to the Keystone State, which will play a decisive role in the 2024 election. In an interview with The Daily Signal, Lewis pinpointed the key issues facing Pennsylvania voters, starting with the higher prices they're paying for gas, groceries, and housing. "The big issue on everybody's mind is inflation and the cost of living," Lewis said. "Over the last few years, voters and citizens have been given what's tantamount to a 20% tax hike ... and not being able to afford what they used to be able to afford just a few years ago." As a near-lifelong Pennsylvanian, Lewis shared his aspirations for the state, faulting poor leadership as an impediment hampering the Keystone State. He cited Pennsylvania's strategic location and natural resources as key advantages, but blamed high taxes and regulations as reasons why its residents are fleeing for other states. "We're the Keystone State. We're the epicenter of the East Coast. We've got great competitive advantages here," Lewis explained. "We should be leading economically, we should be adding to our population base. We've got so much potential, but unfortunately, a lot of leftist policies have held the state back for years." Lewis plans to use his experience in the state legislature to guide the Commonwealth Foundation's efforts and help Pennsylvania achieve its true potential. He cited the energy sector as crucial to Pennsylvania's economy, warning that restrictive government policies could undermine its competitive advantage. "If you were to rank Pennsylvania as its own nation, you would see we're in the top of exporters globally," Lewis said. "We have this massive opportunity." Education reform is another priority for Lewis. As a lawmaker, he championed parental rights and the need for school choice. "Parents know best what their kids need for their educational journey," he said. "And it's not always the government school." The Lifeline Scholarship Program, which would provide educational opportunities for students in underperforming schools, was a step away from becoming law until Democrat Gov. Josh Shapiro issued a line-item veto in 2023. Shapiro, who touted his support for the idea during his 2022 campaign for governor, flip-flopped when faced with pressure from teachers unions. Looking ahead to the future, Lewis outlined his vision for the Commonwealth Foundation, promising to maximize the organization's impact through policy development, government affairs, and storytelling. "We transform free-market ideas into actionable public policies so that all Pennsylvanians can flourish," he said. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

From Football Field to Supreme Court: Movie Tells True Story of Coach Joe Kennedy
A lot of things in Coach Joe Kennedy’s life have been unexpected—not the least of them being taking a major case to the Supreme Court or having a movie made about his life. Kennedy's decision to take a knee in prayer after football games placed him in the middle of a national controversy, and thrust him into a spotlight he never asked for or wanted, since, as he acknowledges, he sees himself as a pretty “average Joe.” The film “Average Joe” hits theaters Thursday and aims to go beyond what Americans know about the coach from news headlines to share his personal life story, says director Harold Cronk. Kennedy was thrust off the football field and into the courtroom nearly a decade ago after he was told he could not take a knee in silent prayer on the 50-yard-line after football games. His decision to persist in his commitment to the Lord cost him his job at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington, about 30 miles west of Seattle. In 2022, after a seven-year legal fight, Kennedy won his case before the Supreme Court. In early September 2023, he returned to the football field and again took a knee in prayer at the end of the game. Later that same month, he made the choice to “retire,” telling The Daily Signal at the time that he and his wife “finished the fight.” “You know, we were in the race to finish the fight, and we’ve remained faithful, and that’s it,” he said. Kennedy and Cronk join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the making of the movie and what they hope viewers take away from the film. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What Life Is Like in North Carolina After Hurricane Helene
LLife is on pause in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Hurricane Helene devastated the city, located about 25 miles south of Asheville. Most people have not returned to work, and in some instances, there is no workplace to return to, because floodwaters swept entire buildings from their foundations. Hendersonville resident Alexander Potter told The Daily Signal neighbors have been the first line of defense in his community as people swung into action to ensure the elderly were taken care of and no one went hungry. Alexander anticipates the initial cleanup will take months. After spending several days on the ground talking with locals like Alexander and seeing the devastation firsthand, The Daily Signal’s Tim Kennedy says it will likely take years for the community to rebuild. Hurricane Helene really was the perfect storm dumping about 20 inches of rain in mountainous communities in the southeast and causing rivers, like the French Broad River in Asheville, North Carolina, to flood and become a deadly force, washing away roads, bridges, and buildings. Kennedy joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share the stories of people such as Dianne Messer, whose entire mobile home community was affected by the storm, and to discuss how the locals view the federal government’s response to the hurricane. Life in Israel 1 Year After Oct. 7
Wearing high heels or flats to work is a small thing most women don’t give too much thought to, but when seconds matter while running to a bomb shelter, a simple decision over footwear becomes critical. Most women in Israel don’t wear heels because, when the sirens sound, Israelis have only about 30 seconds to make it to a bomb shelter, Yael Eckstein, president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, explains. “Just the other day, four days ago, we woke up at 5 a.m. to a siren sounding,” said Eckstein, who lives in Israel with her husband and four children. “We had 90 seconds to wake up our four kids and get them to our shelter in time. Thank God we have a shelter in our home, but even 90 seconds to wake up the kids, get them down to the shelter, we didn’t have time to bring our puppy, and so my kids were crying that the puppy was outside, and I had to make the decision of keeping my kids safe or going out and getting the puppy and risking our lives.” For people living in Israel, these are “everyday situations,” she says. Eckstein joins “The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss Iran’s recent attack on Israel and commemorate the anniversary of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Learn more about your ad choices. Series Pt. 3: Want to Pay in Cryptocurrency? In Louisiana, Now You Can.
In a move toward modern financial practices, Louisiana residents can now pay for state services using cryptocurrency. “Louisiana has always, I think, lagged behind other states when it comes to doing things that are in modern commerce,” Louisiana state Treasurer John Fleming says, adding that he hopes to change that. Cryptocurrency is “going to have a huge role” in the future of finance, Fleming says. Sometimes referred to as digital currency, cryptocurrency does not require a bank account. Louisiana is now accepting bitcoin, bitcoin lightning, and USD coin payments. The first cryptocurrency payment was made to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on Sept. 17. The digital currency payments are converted into dollars following the transaction, Fleming explains. The Louisiana treasurer joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” for the third installment of the show’s money and transparency series. In addition to explaining why the state is now accepting cryptocurrency payments, Fleming discusses his efforts to eliminate the Louisiana state income tax. Learn more about your ad choices.
