Act of Terror: What to Know About FBI Investigation into NOLA Nightmare

Authorities are slowly learning more about what motivated 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar to turn a truck into a weapon on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Wednesday morning. The act of terror left 15 people dead and another 35 injured. The FBI believes Jabbar acted alone and, despite being a military veteran, was inspired by ISIS. An ISIS flag was found in the truck Jabbar was driving and in a post on Facebook, Jabbar admits to joining ISIS. Cully Stimson, Heritage Foundation senior legal fellow and policy expert in crime control, national security, immigration, and homeland security, join The Daily Signal Podcast Bonus Edition to discuss the FBI's investigation into the attack. Former Israeli Hostage Details ‘Hell’

Aviva Siegel has not seen her husband Keith in a year, a separation made more painful by the fact that she knows firsthand what her husband is going through. Siegel was hostage in Gaza with her husband for 51 days before being freed in a hostage deal. Kept underground in Hamas tunnels, Siegel describes her capacity as “hell.” “I touched death, and that's one of the hardest things on earth,” Siegel said. “While we were lying there, I was trying to think, what is it going to feel like? Am I going to die before Keith? And just prayed that I'd die first because I did not want to see Keith suffer.” Siegel sits down with The Daily Signal to share her harrowing experience as a hostage in Gaza, and to call for her husband’s freedom. Following the conversation with Siegel, Yarden Gonen and Amit Levy join the show to share about their siblings, Romi Gonen, 24, and Naama Levy, 20, who were taken hostage on Oct. 7. The two young women are among 10 females still believed to be alive and being held hostage by Hamas. George Soros, Cartels, and the Downfall of California

Following the election of President Donald Trump in November, California Gov. Gavin Newson, a Democrat, convened a special session of the state legislatures to “Trump-proof” California. At the top of the agenda is Newson’s effort to prevent a Trump administration from deporting illegal aliens living in the state. “This is going against the rule of law and against the will of the American people” who elected Trump, Allison Huynh said of Newson’s efforts. Democrats in California have “romanticized” sanctuary cities and even crime, according to Huynh, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and former Democrat. “We’re just opening the gate and allowing all these illegal immigrants to come in, a lot of criminals, drug dealers, and it’s all funded by George Soros and the cartels,” she said. A narrative has been perpetuated in California that justifies crime in the name of being kind to the poor, according to Huynh, but the reality is that “were basically frogs being boiled alive.” Huynh grew up in a Marxist Communist country until the age of seven when her family left Vietnam and moved to America, and says she is watching as her state embraces “full blown socialism.” Huynh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Newson’s actions are moving her state towards socialism, and if there is any hope left for California. Trump and Texas: Plans in Works to Deport Criminal Illegal Aliens

A 1,402-acre ranch in Texas may become ground zero for the deportation of criminal illegal aliens. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, a Republican, spearheaded purchase of the ranch, which is located along the border with Mexico in Starr County between Laredo and McAllen, Texas. Now, Buckingham says, Texas may lease the land to the federal government as a site to process illegal aliens for deportation. She figures President-elect Donald Trump may need it. “We just thought we'd write a letter to [Trump] and say, ... if we can help, we have this property,” she says. Deportations of illegal aliens, especially criminal illegal aliens, was a pillar of Trump's presidential campaign, and Buckingham says she and other leaders in Texas recognize that the incoming Trump administration will “probably need a facility to … relieve the strain on the local jails to get the proper processing before these people are deported.” Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming border czar, has indicated he is interested in using the 1,402-acre ranch, a popular crossing point for illegal aliens, as the second Trump administration begins a major effort to secure the border and remove criminals who entered the country illegally. Illegal aliens already have crossed the border into America unlawfully. Generally, "criminal illegal aliens" refers to those who also have been convicted of a crime either in America or in another country. Buckingham joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what will change at the border when Trump returns next month. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Inside 'the Blob': How Bureaucrats Brought Down Britain's Leader

A new documentary from Palladium Pictures and The Wall Street Journal examines how Britain's permanent bureaucracy—nicknamed “The Blob”—played a pivotal role in ending Liz Truss' brief tenure in late 2022 as prime minister. Through interviews with Truss and other key players, director Michael Pack, a former CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, reveals how unelected technocrats and civil servants—Britain's equivalent of the American deep state—pushed back against her economic reforms, ultimately leading to her resignation after just 44 days in office. Pack spoke with The Daily Signal about the growing power of Britain's administrative state—and lessons President-elect Donald Trump should glean from the episode as he assumes power in the United States. "The Blob is a lot stronger than you think," Pack told The Daily Signal. "A lot of people on the Republican side seem to be pretty confident that they'll be able to radically reform the departments and organizations that they're nominated to head. But I think the Liz Truss story suggests 'the Blob' has a lot of power to fight back." Watch the full documentary: https://youtu.be/c3q9gGhRrjA This is Pack's second documentary with The Wall Street Journal. His first film of the series, "'Get the Jew': The Crown Heights Riot Revisited," debuted in October. It tells the story of the America's worst antisemitic riot, which took place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1991. "The idea of the series was to cover events or things that happened in the past that were either misreported, ignored, or just sent down the memory hole," Pack explained. Pack's most notable film, "Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words," tells the remarkable story of the legendary U.S. Supreme Court justice. With his latest documentary, Pack hopes to educate Americans about the fights facing the incoming Trump administration as it seeks to reform Washington. From his time at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Pack has firsthand experience with America's version of "the Blob." "In my own little world, I did see what it was like to face the administrative state," Pack said of his seven months as CEO. "Most of us, myself included, tend to think of the administrative state as an American problem, and the Liz Truss documentary makes clear that it is a problem of the West," he added. "These bureaucrats are the same in London, Paris, New York, D.C. They go to the same colleges, they're taught the same ideas." Watch the full documentary below. Nelly Roach: 'God Pulled Me Out' of Planned Parenthood

At age 18, Nelly Roach sat in a Planned Parenthood clinic with $246 to pay for an abortion. “I found myself there, as many many people find themselves, in a place where they don't feel that they have any options,” Roach says. Roach was born into a Catholic family on the small island nation of Palau in the Pacific Ocean. When she was 13, her family moved to Missouri so she could receive a better education. She says she was raised with a sense of cultural responsibility to help and serve her family and her people, known as Palauans. Waiting in the Planned Parenthood, Roach recalls, her mind raced. She felt she had to have the abortion for “the great good” of being able to help fellow Palauans one day, but also that what she was about to do was “wrong, but maybe I don't care.” When her name was called, Roach stood up. “Had I turned left ... I would have had an abortion in a matter of minutes. But, you know, God pulled me out, and so I turned right [and walked out], and my baby is now 32 years old.” After giving birth to her son, Roach entered the field of marketing and eventually had her own marketing company. For 25 years, Roach kept her story of nearly aborting her son private. In fact, her mother was the only one who knew she had ever visited Planned Parenthood. But when her son was 23, she spoke at a marketing conference and was approached by a pro-life organization about how to reach more women who are considering having an abortion. “I still believe that it was a divine conversation because it's such a polarizing topic. I wasn't talking about being pro-life, yet they felt comfortable coming to me,” Roach says. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Biden Administration Put Christian Foster Parents on ‘Sidelines.’ Trump Can Change This

In April, the Biden-Harris administration finalized a rule requiring foster parents to affirm a child’s gender ideology. “The provider must commit to establishing an environment that supports the child’s LGBTQI+ status or identity,” according to the rule issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. The policy, according to Herbie Newell, president and executive director of Lifeline Children’s Services, “made people of faith into a different category of foster and adoptive parent, saying that because they didn't give in to this pro-radical LGBTQ+ agenda, that they couldn't foster any child with gender dysphoria or any child that might be having any questions about their LGBTQ status.” “Faith-based Christian people were put on the sidelines and not able to participate in our foster care and adoption system in the same way,” according to Newell. With over 350,000 children in the U.S. foster care system, and over 100,000 of whom are waiting to be adopted, Newell says he is hopeful the incoming Trump administration will roll back these “oppressive administrative rulings.” During Trump’s first administration, there was a sense that “the problem is way too big for us to exclude anyone from the table,” Newell said, noting that he was invited to “West Wing of the White House three times during [Trump’s] presidency.” During the Biden administration, Newell said neither he nor any other faith-based adoption leaders that he knows of were extended such an invitation. Newell joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the adoption and foster care policy changes he hopes to see under a second Trump administration. He also explains the ramifications of China’s decision to end international adoptions to the U.S. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Russia’s ‘Mock Nuclear Strike’ on Ukraine Sends Clear Message to US, Expert Says

Last week, Russia fired an intermediate range ballistic missile at Ukraine. The missile, according to nuclear deterrence and missile defense expert Robert Peters, is designed to carry multiple nuclear warheads, sending a clear message to Washington to “knock it off.” Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, America has told Ukraine that it could use the provided weapons only within the “borders of Ukraine to expel the Russian forces,” says Peters, who before becoming a research fellow at The Heritage Foundation served as the lead strategist at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Then, in mid-November, President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia. Ukraine wasted no time in firing one. Almost immediately afterward, Russia issued a new doctrine on its use of nuclear weapons. As Peters summarizes it, Russia warns “that if anyone conducts deep, penetrating strikes inside of Russia to include using conventional missiles or aircraft or even drones, Russia reserves the right to respond with nuclear weapons.” Russia also said that a nation that supplied the weapons also could become the target of a retaliatory nuclear strike by Russia. Russia’s decision to fire the ballistic missile Thursday at Ukraine can be considered a “mock nuclear strike,” Peters says. Russian President Vladimir Putin “doesn't want a nuclear war,” Peters says. “He doesn't want to fight the United States. But he really, really can't stand that we're giving [Ukraine] these kinds of precise, long-range, deep-penetrating strike capabilities. And he's trying to get us to stop, and he may be willing to use these [nuclear] weapons. It's hard to say.” Peters joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss how the U.S. should proceed in its foreign policy with Ukraine, why a nuclear war would look different than many Americans imagine, and the likelihood that World War III might be approaching. He details the three key groups of influencers—amplifiers, specialists, and mavericks—who shaped the media narrative. After 12 Years In the Making, ‘Bonhoeffer’ Hits Big Screen

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian, a pastor, an anti-Nazi dissident, and a spy who took part in an assassination plot against Adolf Hitler. Bonhoeffer, an author himself, has had many books written about his life and now, his story is being told on the big screen. This Thanksgiving, Angel Studios is bringing “Bonhoeffer” to theaters. “The beauty of Bonhoeffer's story is that it shows what a real Christian should be like, and it shows a failed church, so you see both,” Camille Kampouris, one of the film’s producers, told The Daily Signal Podcast. Because of this duality, Kampouris says the film should appeal “to everyone.” Kampouris and her husband, Emmanuel Kampouris, set out to make a film about Bonhoeffer's life a decade ago with the famous last words, “how hard could it be.” Camille and Emmanuel Kampouris join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share about the long, and sometimes harrowing, journey of making the movie, and what they hope audiences take from it. Praise for Pam Bondi, Another Trump Legal Win, Eliminating the Education Department | Nov. 22

Today's top news: Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and prosecutor for nearly 20 years, is Trump’s new pick for U.S. attorney general. Judge Juan Merchan won’t hold a sentencing hearing next week as planned. Instead, today the embattled judge granted the Trump legal team’s request to file a motion to dismiss the case. Senator Mike Rounds, a Republican from South Dakota, introduced a bill that would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. It’s called the Returning Education to Our States Act, and it could serve as the legislative vehicle to carry out Trump’s promise. The Nuclear Option: Unleashing America’s Energy Future (Bonus Interview)

Nuclear power stands at a critical crossroads in America. With growing demands for electricity and a desire from the incoming Trump administration to bolster America’s energy independence, nuclear energy has the potential to transform our future. So what’s preventing the United States from experiencing a nuclear revolution? In a groundbreaking new book, Heritage Foundation senior research fellow Jack Spencer argues nuclear power can be a dynamic, market-driven energy source—but only if government gets out of the way. “Nuclear Revolution: Powering the Next Generation” (Optimum Publishing International) makes the case that regulatory barriers have made nuclear power unnecessarily expensive rather than the economically competitive energy source it should be. Purchase your copy: https://www.heritage.org/NuclearRevolution Today, a maze of outdated regulations are stifling innovation while doing little to enhance safety. Hannah-Claire Brimelow: Big Surprises as Trump Assembles His Team

On this Sunday edition of The Daily Signal Podcast, we bring you a conversation with Hannah-Claire Brimelow on the Problematic Women podcast. It's a crossover episode! “Well, I didn't see that coming” has been a somewhat common refrain on Capitol Hill this week as President-elect Donald Trump announces his picks to lead his forthcoming administration. Trump has built his brand on breaking the mold of politics and continues the trend with his Cabinet appointments. Not every choice has been a surprise. Susie Wiles has long been on Trump’s short list to be his chief of staff, given her years of loyalty to the president and her success in managing Trump’s reelection campaign. Wiles will make history as the first female chief of a president's staff. And Tom Homan’s experience in Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, coupled with his positive relationship with Trump, made him an obvious choice for “border czar.” But some of Trump’s picks were unexpected, though not necessarily in a bad way. On this week's edition of "Problematic Women," Hannah-Claire Brimelow joins the show to discuss Trump's Cabinet picks and why some are so surprising. We also fact-check some recent abortion claims. Trump did not have success with Hispanic voters because of “anything conservatives did,” but rather “things that the Left has done,” according to Mike Gonzalez, author of “A Race for the Future: How Conservatives Can Break the Liberal Monopoly on Hispanic Americans.” The “Left has actually done 95% of it of the work” of driving Hispanics to the Republican Party “by going crazy, completely crazy over woke issues that are completely rejected by Hispanics,” he said. Gonzalez, who serves as a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the central issues that drove Hispanic voters across the aisle to Trump.
