Victor Davis Hanson: Was Trump Right on DEI Being at Fault for D.C. Plane Crash?

On this episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” a Daily Signal original series, Hanson discusses the controversy surrounding Donald Trump's blunt comments about diversity, equity, and inclusion potentially being at fault in the recent commercial jet/Army helicopter collision outside of Washington. “ We do know this, and Donald Trump brought it up, and that was that the FAA consistently under Joe Biden had racial quotas, and they abolished programs, and universities that encouraged people who had either expertise through the curriculum or prior military experience who would do well on meritocratic exams to try to join the FAA—and they were rejected because of their race.” “ My point is that when [Trump] did that, everybody in the media thought it was awful. But then people who probably didn’t even vote for him said, 'Wait a minute. I want to be safe. I want my daughter to be safe. I want my husband to be safe. You mean there’s people in these control towers that were selected for criteria other than merit?'” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Role of the US Military at the Southern Border

President Donald Trump is surging resources to America’s southern border, including military personnel, and has every right to do so, according to Robert Greenway. “It is not unprecedented for the military to be called in [to the border] when the capacity of our law enforcement agencies is exceeded, and that’s almost certainly the case now,” said Greenway, director of the Center for National Defense at The Heritage Foundation. In a new Heritage report titled, “How the President Can Use the U.S. Military to Confront the Catastrophic Threat at the Border with Mexico,” Greenway, who is also a former member of the National Security Council, Greenway breaks down the specific ways the military can step in to secure the border. The military can help in three general capacities at the border, Greenway explains. First, the military can help with transportation and housing of illegal aliens in the deportation process. Second, the military can provide assistance with the physical security of the border through increased personnel, surveillance, and assistance in the construction of the border wall. And finally, the military can work outside of the U.S. with other countries to help them police their own borders more effectively. “I think there’s a huge role for the military to play, and advise, equip, support, and assist our partners and allies south of the border,” he said. “The military is uniquely capable of doing that.” Greenway joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss past cases in which the U.S. deployed the military to the U.S. border, and why it is an effective strategy for stopping the flood of illegal immigration. Victor Davis Hanson: Trump’s Warning to Elite Universities, There’s a New Sheriff in Town

Victor Davis Hanson discusses the implications of Donald Trump's executive orders, particularly those targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) quotas in government. He delves into recent incidents at Columbia University and NYU involving pro-Palestine protests and their potential consequences for student visas: “My point is this, all of these Elite students at these elite universities talk a great game, but when they've never faced any consequences, if Donald Trump and if these universities are afraid of Donald Trump and they clamp down, I think you're going to see deterrence start to work to discourage other protests, because one thing we know about all these young students, they are careerist and they are careerists used to being pampered…” Learn more about your ad choices. In this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson cuts through the hysteria surrounding Donald Trump's decision to end the security details for Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, and Anthony Fauci, highlighting their financial standings and Trump's stance on their protection: Donald Trump said, when he was pressed about this, “aren't you worried that you may be culpable if any of them are harmed, since, supposedly, right-wingers don't like Fauci and the Iranians are mad at Bolton and Pompeo?” And he said, “do we give security details forever?” “Donald Trump will do more to keep Pompeo and Bolton safe by confronting Iran. Victor Davis Hanson: Get Me Kash Patel

On this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson delves into the controversies surrounding Kash Patel's nomination as the FBI director. Despite Patel's extensive background as a public defender, federal prosecutor, and involvement in the executive and legislative branches, his role in the Nunes memo and association with Donald Trump have stirred significant opposition from the Left: “So, in all of these aspects, he seems like the perfect FBI director. But there's two reasons why people are very angry about him, of course. One is, he was the point man for Devin Nunes House Select Intelligence Committee investigation of the FBI. And he helped draft the Nunes memo, which detailed, quite accurately, all of the FBI's machinations to collude with their paid informant, Christopher Steele, to fabricate a false dossier that incorrectly alleged that Donald Trump was a Russian asset.” For Victor's latest thoughts, please go to: https://victorhanson.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Victor Davis Hanson: Trump’s Nominees’ Confirmation Battles

Do those who opposed Pete Hegseth’s nomination really believe he will be worse than former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin? On this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson discusses the contentious Senate confirmation process for Trump administration nominees. He highlights past and upcoming nominations, such as Pete Hegseth, Kash Patel, and RFK Jr., and the crucial role swing-state senators play in these votes: “There's a general rule, though, that we can make sense that, I think, will apply—has applied, to Pete Hegseth. It will apply to Kash Patel, especially, RFK Jr. and others. And that is three things: The more important the Cabinet position is, the more controversial the vote; the more likely a Republican nominee is going to try to make fundamental and needed changes, the more controversial the vote; and, the more that senators in swing states worry about being reelected, the more controversial vote.” Learn more about your ad choices. Leavitt Press Briefing, Federal Funding Freeze, Republicans Plot Strategy | Jan. 28, 2025

On today’s Top News in 10: Reporters peppered White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt with questions on a range of topics during her first briefing. She promised to reverse former President Joe Biden’s decision to revoke the White House press credentials of 440 reporters. The Daily Signal’s Fred Lucas was among those who lost his credentials in 2023. The White House announced it is freezing federal grants and loans while it undertakes a sweeping review of such spending to ensure it is aligned with the president’s priorities. In fiscal year 2024, he said the government distributed more than $3 million in federal financial assistance. That’s approximately 30% of the $10 trillion it spent. House Republicans are gathered in Florida for a three-day meeting to sort out their strategy for enacting President Trump’s agenda. The Daily Signal’s Elizabeth Mitchell is in Miami for the meeting and interviewed several members of Congress about their plans for budget reconciliation and other upcoming legislative debates. Additional headlines: After dominating the news for weeks last year, Levitt announced the drones flying over New Jersey were authorized to be flown by the Federal Aviation Administration. President Trump has another member of his Cabinet today after the Senate voted 77 to 22 for Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Sen. Victor Davis Hanson: California—New Wildfires, Same Faces

Over 10,000 homes destroyed, and $50-$100 billion in damages as California battles another explosive wildfire. Find out why nothing has changed and who's accountable: “The estimate of the damage is somewhere now between, perhaps, $50 and $100 billion, and we don't have enough homes for the people who were left. But here's my point, nothing has really changed. Karen Bass is still the mayor. The deputy mayor, Brian Williams, is still under house arrest, or he's under investigation for phoning in a bomb threat.” “And we still have this mysterious thing, don't we? Who causes these fires? It's taboo. You cannot mention the word homeless, but there are no lightning strikes. There are no other exegesis that might explain why these things keep happening. But you do have tens of thousands of homeless people spread all over the L.A. area, of 18 million people, many of them in the hills that camp out. So, my point is, we now have another fire.” “So, my point is, the perfect storm of water mismanagement, timber mismanagement, insurance mismanagement, civic government mismanagement, the role of DEI—they're all in place.” For Victor's latest thoughts, go to: https://victorhanson.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Hidden Threat to American Capitalism, Explained by Andrew Puzder

President Donald Trump appointed Andy Puzder ambassador to the European Union this past week. But before he heads to Brussels, Puzder is warning about the left-wing scourge of stakeholder capitalism. As the former chief executive of CKE Restaurants, a major fast food corporation operating Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s, Puzder knows what it takes to run a successful business. That’s why he’s so alarmed at the trends he’s witnessing in corporate America. He spoke to The Daily Signal about his new book, “A Tyranny for the Good of its Victims: The Ugly Truth about Stakeholder Capitalism.” In this episode, we cover: • How BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street accumulated unprecedented control over U.S. corporations • The real meaning behind ESG policies and their impact on American business • Why major brands are adopting policies that seem to conflict with their customer base • The effectiveness of consumer boycotts against woke corporate policies • Capitalism’s historic role in reducing global poverty Purchase your copy of “A Tyranny for the Good of Its Victims” on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4ayJ1gZ Keep Up With The Daily Signal Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email Subscribe to our other shows: The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://www.dailysignal.com/the-tony-kinnett-cast Problematic Women: https://www.dailysignal.com/problematic-women The Signal Sitdown: https://www.dailysignal.com/the-signal-sitdown Follow The Daily Signal: X: https://x.com/DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/ Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DailySignal Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/TheDailySignal Thanks for making The Daily Signal Podcast your trusted source for the day’s top news. Victor Davis Hanson: Trump’s Bold Measures & The Cost of Correcting the Left

On this episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” a Daily Signal original, Hanson discusses the initial days of the Trump administration and the backlash from the Left. He compares the costs associated with corrective measures to those of the policies originally enacted by the Left. “Over these first few days of the Trump administration, we've seen these bold measures. And it's starting to incur a big backlash, or anger, or counter response from the Left.” “They're saying, well, Donald Trump wants to build the wall. Does he have any idea what it's going to cost? Well, a couple of things: What was the cost of letting 12 million people in here? Twelve million people. We have no idea. What was the cost of allowing 80 to 100,000 people to die every year from cartel-imported fentanyl? So, there was a cost. And that cost was much greater than building the wall.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Pulling the Tentacles of the Wealthy Woke Off Your Government

“Follow the money.” It’s one of the age-old principles of investigative journalism because it can lead to the discovery of a “dark money cabal,” as it did for author Tyler O’Neil. After years of reporting on the organizations and people who funnel money into leftist causes, O’Neil determined that “their nefarious influence” needed to be exposed and wrote "The Woketopus: The Dark Money Cabal Manipulating the Federal Government.” The Constitution “you learned about in school with its nifty checks and balances, that's not really how it works,” O’Neil says. “I think our government today is less a republic and more it operates like a classical monarchy, where you have this administration that … is handing down all these rules,” O’Neil says. “And Congress still has the ability to check them, but rarely does so to the degree that it should, as the founders intended. From green energy policies to gender ideology, and even law enforcement, the tentacles of the wealthy woke have been, and are, at work. Take energy policy, and consider that “a lot of the bureaucrats who run the [Environmental Protection Agency] and some of these other agencies, they came from woke activist groups,” O’Neil tells "The Daily Signal Podcast." The issue, according to O’Neil, is that “a lot of the laws, a lot of the rules that we have to live by are passed in the administrative state” and not through elected leaders in Congress who are answerable to the American people. O’Neil join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the ways the radical left “Woketopus” has infiltrated nearly every aspect of the U.S. government, and how the Trump administration can pull off the tentacle. Victor Davis Hanson: The Left’s Post-Election Come to Jesus Moment

In this episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” a Daily Signal original, Hanson discusses the significant media and public opinion shifts following the Nov. 5 presidential election through the inauguration. “There's been a whole change of mentality from the trivial to the existential. We can't quite believe that. Mika and Joe Scarborough made a religious journey, as it is, to Mar-a-Lago. Snoop Dogg once cut a film about shooting Donald Trump. Now he has endorsed him. And that is true all over the media. They just fired the head of MSNBC. Now we also learn these disclosures. Why now?” “I think people as they look back, they think we were in a coma. Victor Davis Hanson: Joe Biden is no Dwight D. Eisenhower

On today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” a Daily Signal original, Hanson critically analyzes Joe Biden's farewell address, pointing out the hypocrisy in Biden's warnings about a new oligarchy. Hanson compares Biden's speech to Dwight D. Eisenhower's historic warning about the military-industrial complex and argues Biden lacks credibility. “But remember Joe Biden is no Dwight Eisenhower. He had credibility. He was a two-term president. He was the hero of what he called the American crusade in Europe, from the beaches of Normandy in June 1944, all the way into the interior of Germany. So, people believed him. Unfortunately, Joe Biden has no such credibility.” ”I'm not a big fan of Mark Zuckerberg, and he was a hostile opponent of Donald Trump, but whether you like him or not, he revolutionized Facebook. So, these so-called oligarchs, David Sachs, or Peter Thiel, or Elon Musk, or Mark Zuckerberg, or Jeff Bezos, they are ‘can-do’ people. And Trump has them around him now. They're making kind of a hajj to Mar-a-Lago, not because he wants to have some consortium and rig the market or punish his enemies, but because they make things. They're very similar to the captains of industry, the ‘dollar-a-day’ men, that Franklin Delano Roosevelt enlisted to win World War II.” The Daily Signal cannot continue to tell stories, like this one, without the support of our viewers: https://www.dailysignal.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Trump's Immigration Orders, Rubio Sworn In, Bishop's Woke Warning | Jan. 21, 2025

President Donald Trump made good on his promise to take action to secure the border on Day One of his administration with 10 executive orders. The ink was barely dry Tuesday when 18 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit over his order to end universal birthright citizenship. Marco Rubio was the first Trump nominee to secure Senate confirmation Monday night on a vote of 99-0. The former Florida senator was sworn in as secretary of state Tuesday by Vice President JD Vance. Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde of Washington lectured Trump and Vance on being kind to transgender people and immigrants at Tuesday’s National Prayer Service. Additional headlines: • Congressman Andy Biggs, a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, announced Tuesday that he’s exploring a run for governor of Arizona. • Ryan Corbett‘s 894-day captivity in Afghanistan is coming to an end. Victor Davis Hanson: Donald Trump's Inauguration Day Promises and Biden Pardons

In today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson assess the promises made by President Donald Trump in his inauguration speech, from combatting DEI to securing the border, and the messages between the lines. “Here's my point: Trump was blunt, maybe even crude. He said he was going to eventually — we would have the Panama Canal. He was going to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the ‘Gulf of America,’and people were kind of hysterical, in their reactions. But it's the way he said it and his directness and his candor and his honesty that bothered them.” “It reminded me of the great seal of the United States, “Novus Ordo Seclorum,” a new order for the ages or for the centuries. That comes from Virgil's Eclogues, the great Latin poet, when he was talking about the birth of a new Roman generation—in particular descendants of Augustus—that would change Rome forever. And our founders in 1776 put it on the seal. And you see it emblazoned on the $1 bill. And that's the type of mood he's trying to encourage.” Learn more about your ad choices. Victor Davis Hanson: Joe Biden’s Disastrous Foreign Policy and False Claims

In this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson critiques President Joe Biden’s claims about his own foreign policy in the waning days of his presidency. “So why would you claim that you had done this outstanding achievement? And the war is not over. It’s the worst carnage in Europe since the Battle of Stalingrad—1.7 million dead, wounded or missing. It’s nothing to brag about. It’s a complete catastrophe.” “He said that he was tough on China. He said China wasn’t our rival. He allowed a Chinese spy balloon to traverse the United States. For a week, he did nothing.” “Trump didn’t have a war in Afghanistan because you lost it. And you humiliated us. And you destroyed deterrence…this was the single greatest disaster in foreign policy in a century, and yet, he had the audacity to go before the State Department and claim it was a great success.” Learn more about your ad choices. Border Czar Tom Homan: ‘People Are Going to Be Pleased’ With Trump’s Executive Orders

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to sign a slew of executive order on his first day in office, including multiple that pertain to securing America’s southern border with Mexico. “I think people are going to be pleased with the executive orders he is going to sign,” Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, told "The Daily Signal Podcast," adding, “I'm familiar with many of them, but I'm not going to get ahead of the president on that.” Homan, who served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump from January 2017 to June 2018, said had he expects the president to “go back to what was successful” at the border during his first administration. “We go back to Remain in Mexico, third safe country agreements, end catch and release, continue building that wall,” Homan said. While many the Americans who voted for Trump will likely be pleased with the president’s actions to secure the border, Trump’s border and immigration agenda will also be met with resistance, Homan predicts. “I think we're going to take a lot of hate,” he said. “We're going to be sued every day, numerous times. I think you'll see the left try to control the media. They're going to show the first crying female, first crying child, and say how inhumane we are. But they won’t to talk about the 340,000 children that they've failed to take care of," Homan said, presumably referring to the Biden administration. The leftist corporate media will “tell one side of the story,” Homan said. “they'll try to vilify us, but they're not going to stop us from doing [our] job.” After what he has witnessed while serving both as a border Patrol Agent and in ICE, Homan says he does not care what the media says about him. Homan joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” for a special bonus edition to discuss the resources the Trump administration will need to carry out deportations of illegal aliens, and what information he expects to be uncovered regarding the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border. Victor Davis Hanson: Where Does MAGA Come From?

On this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson explores the historical roots and evolution of the 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) movement. Understand the unique strategies Donald Trump employed to unite diverse groups and achieve political success. Please go to https://victorhanson.com/ for Victor's lastets content! “First of all, remember, it's not all that different, in its core, from doctrinaire republicanism, in this sense. It, professes to be fiscally sound. It wants low taxes, limited government, and conservative values, in the sense of culture and tradition, patriotism.” “Donald Trump added to it was: We were not going to nation build abroad. We're not taking people out of East Palestine, Ohio and sending them over to spend billions of dollars, and lose their lives in God awful places, like Fallujah ,where people don't appreciate it.” “In fact, when we have 16% of the population that's foreign born, and that's almost 55 million people, he has called for a reduction or at least a breathing spell in legal immigration. That's ignited another tension or paradox or conflict between the MAGA people, who do not want any more than, say, 200,000 legal immigrants, and the Silicon Valley converts who want these work visas for skilled coders and people in Silicon Valley.” Learn more about your ad choices. Victor Davis Hanson: Trump and 'The Art' of the 'Troll'

In this edition of The Daily Signal’s “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson delves into former President Donald Trump's negotiation techniques, which critics call “trolling.” Hanson discusses how Trump's strategies, as described in 'The Art of the Deal,' play out in various geopolitical scenarios: renaming the Gulf of Mexico, purchasing Greenland, renegotiating the Panama Canal Treaty, and making Canada a state: “In the case of renaming the Gulf of Mexico, the Mexican president showed a map recently of the southwest of the United States being part of Mexico. That was her counter. That's kind of a bad troll, because they rely on $63 billion of remittances.” The discussion emphasizes Trump's approach of making extreme demands to gain an upper hand and highlights the irony in how he uses left-wing arguments against their proponents. Victor Davis Hanson: How DEI Caused a Multifaceted ‘Systems Breakdown’ in Los Angeles

In this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson, author of “The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation,” explores the systematic failures plaguing Los Angeles as it attempts to put out devastating wildfires. From diversity, equity, and inclusion dilemmas to regulatory failures, see how this extreme ideology impacts good governance. “We have a $700,000-a-year utilities czar in Los Angeles, and she cannot explain why there was not enough water, at least in a convincing way—because she's never had to, because she was ideologically correct.” “You have an assistant fire chief who said, ‘If women can't—if I can't carry out a man [from a burning building], then that's not on me. It's the man who shouldn't be there.’ It's like saying if a child fell down a well and I'm not physically strong enough to retrieve him and save him, that's his fault. He shouldn't have been in the well.” “In the Los Angeles catastrophe, there are whole areas of imperial inquiry that are put off limits. You cannot talk about the homeless and whether there was a homeless person who was out in the hills, [and] to get warm, lighted a fire. It's a legitimate topic of inquiry. It's happened. You can't talk about.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We Need A Travel Ban, Now | Victor Davis Hanson

In this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson, author of “The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation,” explores the unprecedented state of illegal immigration in the US and proposes solutions to restore border security. Some of the solutions mentioned include: “I think that whatever your status is, if you are sending money back to a foreign country from the United States that is singled out as a source of illegal immigration—Mexico, Latin America, for example—then the United States government should put a 10 to 20 or 30% tax on all remittances.” “We’re the only country in the world that gives unqualified citizenship to people who happen to be born here and then anchor an entire family. Why not also put a 10, 20 year ban on people who have been detained here illegally and stop them from applying for a green card or legal readmissions for 20 years, that would be a very powerful deterrent.” Learn more about your ad choices. Rep. Mark Harris on ACLU Pro-Illegal Immigrant PR Campaign

The American Civil Liberties Union has launched a publicity campaign aimed at pushing back on President Donald Trump’s pledge to deport illegal aliens. But pastor and Congressman Mark Harris, R-N.C., says the ACLU is “missing the point that not all of these folks that are coming are asylum seekers.” “If you really were compassionate and really believed in the asylum program, you would not just be trying to push this Biden administration's process along the way, because what you do is you mess it up for those who have real need, and you mess it up for those that are seeking asylum in this country,” Harris said. Trump has pledged to deport illegal aliens, beginning first with criminals and those who pose a threat to the country, such as members of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua, which now operates in over a dozen states across the U.S., including North Carolina, the state Harris represents. Voters “very much believe that we've got to get back to law and order,” Harris said, adding that he thinks Trump was given a “mandate” in the 2024 election to secure the border. Harris, a newly sworn in member of Congress, joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why he chose to get involved in politics and to discuss the need for secure borders and enforcement of immigration law. Donald Trump’s MAGA Approach to U.S. Foreign Policy | Victor Davis Hanson

What is the MAGA approach to U.S. foreign policy? Many of President-elect Donald Trump’s critics call him an “isolationist.” Moving America away from “endless wars” was a staple of his 2024 presidential campaign. However, during his first term, Trump did not shy away from flexing America’s military muscles, especially regarding Syria and Iran. In this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson, Hoover Institute Senior Fellow and the author of, “The Case for Trump,” argues that the MAGA foreign agenda is neither isolationist, nor interventionist but something else entirely. From Woke to Warfighting: How Pete Hegseth Can Fix the Pentagon

Decades of social engineering have transformed America's armed forces, prompting concerns about the Pentagon's warfighting capabilities and politicized culture. It's the reason President-elect Donald Trump picked Pete Hegseth as his nominee for secretary of defense: to restore lethality as the military's primary focus. Fixing the Pentagon won't be easy, but it's imperative to restore America's fighting force. On this episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast," former Army Ranger Will Thibeau shares firsthand accounts from his service and outlines the startling changes at the Department of Defense since then. Thibeau, who directs the American Military Project at the Claremont Institute's Center for the American Way of Life, diagnoses the problems—and what it will take to restore the military's core mission of combat readiness. For anyone concerned about the future of American military power, Thibeau provides a perspective on what went wrong—and how to make it right.
