Christopher Ruddy Shares Vision for Newsmax's Future Ahead of IPO

Newsmax announced this month that it’s planning for an initial public offering later this year or in 2025—a big leap for a media outlet that began more than 25 years ago as a website delivering news on the internet. Christopher Ruddy, Newsmax’s founder and CEO, spoke with The Daily Signal about his plans for the company and explained how eligible investors are able to take advantage of a private placement offering before the company goes public on the stock market. “Thousands of people would tell us they wanted to buy shares in Newsmax through the years,” Ruddy said. “And we thought, wouldn't it be great to have tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, of co-owners [and] partners with Newsmax that are fighting for us [and] have a stake in our success? And so that was the biggest reason.” Now more than ever, especially in this election year of 2024, America needs Newsmax, and you can join with us as an investor,” Ruddy said. After working as a journalist at the New York Post and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Ruddy started Newsmax in 1998. In the years that followed, he transformed Newsmax into a broadcasting and multimedia powerhouse reaching more than 40 million people. Newsmax’s TV channel is the fourth-highest-rated on cable news. And it’s just one of several media properties in addition to its website, Newsmax.com: There’s also a free streaming channel at Newsmax2, a smartphone app, a streaming service called Newsmax+, and Newsmax Magazine. Now, as he prepares for Newsmax’s initial public offering and eventual listing on Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange, Ruddy is seeking to raise $225 million as part of a private offering for accredited investors. More details are available at NewsmaxInvest.com. Listen to our interview with Ruddy on “The Daily Signal Podcast” to hear his vision for Newsmax, the threats and challenges facing conservative media, and why he's optimistic about the future. Becket Fund Lawyer Argues for Religious Liberty of Catholic School

A catholic school’s ability to operate in accordance with its faith is in jeopardy. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit heard oral arguments in St. Joseph Parish v. Nessel on Tuesday, June 11. The case involves a Catholic school in Michigan that is asking the court to protect its ability to hire staff who align with its faith. The Michigan Supreme Court reinterpreted a state civil rights statute’s definition of sex in July 2022 to include sexual orientation without any exemption for religious organizations. In March 2023, the Michigan legislature wrote this into state law, expressly prohibiting discrimination on sexual orientation or gender identity. The school’s right to hire staff who hold its views on marriage and gender is at risk. St. Joseph's asks all staff to be practicing Catholics and uphold the faith. Senior Counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty Will Haun argued the case before the Sixth Circuit Court on June 11. He joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what the case means for Christian institutions nationwide. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Fact Check: Is Climate Change Really Causing More Severe Hurricanes?

Every year at this time, when hurricane season rolls around, corporate media start pumping out headlines linking the severity of hurricanes to climate change. But is there causation or correlation? And if changes in the climate do affect hurricanes, is it in the way climate activists claim? Climatologist David Legates says, "[If] we have colder periods, we will get more hurricane activity. If we have warmer periods, the hurricane activity tends to drop off.” Legates serves as a visiting fellow for the Science Advisory Committee in the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment at The Heritage Foundation, and is a professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. He is also the co-author of the book “Climate and Energy: The Case for Realism.” Legates joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss what connection does exist between hurricanes and a changing climate. Former NFL Star Ben Watson Offers Antidote to Abortion

If the number of marriages increased in America, the number of abortions would likely decrease, statistics show. The Pew Research Center reported that in 2021, 87% of women who had abortions were unmarried, meaning that “marriage can make a huge difference if 87% of abortion-determined women are not married,” says pro-life advocate Ben Watson, a former NFL star. It's not only the unborn that benefit from a society that celebrates marriage, but all children, Watson says. “It's necessary that men be a part of raising a child and having a commitment to the mother in the form of marriage, because we see statistically that it produces that kind of children that we want in our society,” says Watson, who played for four NFL teams during his 16-season career. Ahead of Father's Day, the former NFL tight end and current president of strategic relationships for the Human Coalition joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how he and his wife have navigated some of the challenges of their own marriage, and whether being a father is what he expected. Watson also offers his predictions on the upcoming 2024-25 NFL season. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Oklahoma Treasurer Leads Fight Against ESG

Oklahoma is center stage in the fight against environmental, social, and governance policies (ESG), and the man leading the charge is state Treasurer Todd Russ. Russ was in Washington, D.C., this week and visited The Daily Signal to share an update on his efforts to combat the ESG agenda. Oklahoma enacted the Energy Discrimination Elimination Act in 2022, and tasked Russ with managing a list of financial institutions prohibited from doing business with the state. That list currently includes BlackRock, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, State Street, and Climate First Bank. Russ found their ESG policies run counter to the financial interests of Oklahoma. The law is now in jeopardy, however, following a judge’s ruling in May that temporarily blocked its enforcement. Russ spoke with The Daily Signal about what’s at stake and how individuals can join the fight against ESG. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Why Hunter Biden Case Smells Strongly of 'Corruption'

Hunter Biden has been found guilty on all three of the felony charges he faced, but the case, according to Mike Howell, smells of "corruption." “What's happening with Hunter [Biden] is essentially they picked the lowest level thing that didn't connect to [President] Joe [Biden], the thing they could paint in the light of addiction, the most sympathetic light, as a means to absolve him for guilt in everything else,” says Howell, executive director for the Oversight Project at The Heritage Foundation. “What the American people really care about, what I care about, is not that Hunter [Biden] was a crackhead,” Howell, also an investigative columnist for The Daily Signal, said, but “the corruption in the federal government, that Joe Biden and his family were running an international pay-to-play influence-peddling scheme in some of the most corrupt regions of the world, to include Ukraine and the [Chinese Communist Party].” Howell joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to argue why the guilty verdict in the Hunter Biden case is more complex than it may appear. Why Results of EU Elections Are Likely to Make Biden ‘Nervous’

The European Union may have just taken a big step to the political right, and the Biden administration should take note, Nile Gardiner says. “I think that the Biden White House is going to be very nervous, looking at the results in Europe, because European voters have overwhelmingly turned against a lot of the left-wing dogma and agenda, not only [that] Europe leads, but the same agenda that is pursued by the Biden administration,” says Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation. The European Parliament held elections Thursday through Sunday, in which millions of Europeans cast their ballots across 27 countries, and Europe’s conservatives won big. “I would describe the election results over the weekend as nothing short of a political revolution within Europe—a firm rejection of socialist ruling elites,” says Gardiner, who prior to joining Heritage in 2002 was foreign policy researcher for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In response to this “political revolution,” French President Emmanuel Macron has called for snap legislative elections at the end of June and beginning of July. According to Gardiner, this is a very risky move for Macron, as he is giving the French electorate the chance to further embrace a conservative government. Gardiner joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the implications of the European elections on the U.S. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Bob Woodson on Why DEI Is Being Ditch

Some universities are repealing and replacing their diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. At the end of May, the University of North Carolina system voted to repeal and replace its DEI policy for a new policy that “aims to ensure efforts to support students on UNC System campuses do not infringe on academic freedom, equal opportunity, or institutional neutrality,” according to the university. In Utah, the state recently passed legislation to halt all DEI activities in the state’s universities. Conservatives have long raised concerns over the harmful implications of DEI programs, which Bob Woodson argues are “institutionalizing racism in the name of addressing social injustice.” Woodson, founder of the Woodson Center and author of “Red, White, and Black: Rescuing American History from Revisionists and Race Hustlers,” says “it’s insulting to black America to assume that social justice can only be achieved by changing the rules, dumbing down standards, and compromising the basic integrity. We fought in the Civil Rights Movement so that we can move beyond race and define ourselves by the content of our character, but this is turning the clock back.” Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. Miami Aims for ‘Functional Zero’ Homeless Population. Is It Working?

The mayor of Miami has an ambitious goal—to reach a “functional zero” homeless population within his bustling city. “We reached functional zero veteran homeless, and I realized … that we could, we should, take it a step further and get to a functional zero,” says Mayor Francis Suarez, a Republican who leads Florida’s second-biggest city. Miami is partnering with several organizations—including Hermanos de la Calle, Lotus House, and Camillus House—to meet the varied needs of the homeless and create a model that other cities could duplicate to tackle their own homelessness crises. But Suarez says addressing homelessness extends beyond meeting the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the homeless—cities must also create an economic environment that allows all citizens to thrive. If city leaders want to effectively address homelessness, Suarez argues, they also must consider a “broader macroeconomic reality” that plays a role in creating or alleviating the problem. To this end, the mayor says Miami’s government has followed three rules: “We've kept taxes low; we've kept people safe; and we've leaned into innovation.” Suarez joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Miami is advancing toward a “functional zero” homeless population and to share the exciting results of a recent event toward reaching that goal. Why Tennessee AG Is Suing Social Media

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, knew the harm the platform was inflicting on minors and did nothing to mitigate it, according to a lawsuit filed against the social media giant. In 2023, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc., calling on the company to prioritize the protection of minors. “Over about the last 15 years, the mental health of American teenagers has plummeted in anxiety, suicidality, depression, sleep deprivation—all these metrics that show something is not right,” Skrmetti told "The Daily Signal Podcast." “Not only do we have experts who say it was social media, there have been a variety of leaks from within the social media companies that indicate they knew that it was having this negative effect,” he says. While Skrmetti says that “social media [are] not inherently bad,” and the lawsuit is not intended to micromanage platforms such as Instagram, it’s Meta’s responsibility to make its products "safe for kids.” Skrmetti joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss where the lawsuit against Meta stands. He also discusses his state’s fight to protect women’s sports against males who identify as women entering female athletics. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. BIG Announcement: Rob Bluey on What Future Holds for The Daily Signal

The Heritage Foundation founded The Daily Signal 10 years ago this week. The group filled a void in media at a time when few conservative news outlets existed. A decade later, the Washington, D.C.-based news outlet is entering a new chapter and aiming to expand its influence. “We are so excited that with the blessing of The Heritage Foundation, The Daily Signal is now its own independent media organization,” Rob Bluey, the news outlet's president and executive editor, explains on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” The move to become its own organization, according to Bluey, provides The Daily Signal with the opportunity to grow its team, acquire White House and congressional press credentials, and offers more editorial freedom to cover elections and campaigns. From its inception, The Daily Signal has had a mission that aligns with The Heritage Foundation, according to Bluey, and “I think that the conservative principles that have guided Heritage will continue to guide The Daily Signal in the future, even as an independent media organization, because ultimately, we will be organized as both a nonprofit and a for-profit.” Enjoy the show! John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota to win the support of his Senate Republican colleagues. How Illegal Immigration Has Created ‘High Threat Level’ for Terrorist Attack in US

America is facing a “high threat level” for a terrorist attack because of the crisis at the southern border, says the head of a group working to curb illegal immigration. “It does not take a lot of people to inflict an extraordinary amount of damage,” said Julie Kirchner, executive director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, citing the 19 terrorists that carried out the attacks on 9/11. Kirchner says more incidents are happening across America that should raise alarm bells over the threat illegal immigration poses to the safety of the nation. At the beginning of May, for example, two Jordanian illegal aliens attempted to breach a U.S. military base in Quantico, Virginia. One of the men is reported to have crossed the southern border in April and another overstayed a student visa. The two men tried to drive onto the base “and only due to the quick thinking of some of these guards were they stopped,” Kirchner said, adding that “people need to understand what's going on, because this is a national emergency.” After more than 10 million illegal aliens have crossed the U.S. border under President Joe Biden, the administration has indicated Biden plans to issue an executive order on the border. Kirchner notes the announcement of a forthcoming executive action on the border comes “six months before … a presidential election.” The head of the Federation for American Immigration Reform joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how America’s border crisis opened a door for terrorism in America, and what can be learned from the recent incident in Quantico. How ‘Faith and Reason Can Win the Culture War’

Unlikely alliances are forming across America as Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Jews, classic liberals, and traditional conservatives are all troubled by a spreading political ideology that has abandoned reason, the author of a new book on the subject says. Americans are seeing a contingent on the Left that “has gone completely mad,” says Jay Richards, co-author of “Fight the Good Fight: How an Alliance of Faith and Reason Can Win the Culture War.” “We're not dealing with a kind of Walter Mondale-John F. Kennedy liberalism of the 1960s,” he explains. “We're dealing with a radical postmodernism, and we call this 'woke ideology' because we don't have a word for it, but it really is radical, and it's all about basically destabilizing the current order.” Issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculums in schools and gender-identity ideology have “awakened” Americans across political and faith divides, says Richards, who also serves as director of the DeVos Center for Life, Religion, and Family at The Heritage Foundation. (Heritage founded The Daily Signal in 2014.) Richards joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the unique alliances the radical Left’s agenda has unintentionally created and to explain how faith and reason can work together to win the culture war. Defeating the Radical Left: Chris Rufo Talks Strategy and Resilience

Chris Rufo wrote “America’s Cultural Revolution” last year as a warning to conservatives about the radical Left's takeover of institutions—from business and government to education and entertainment. In addition to being an exposé, it also served as a call to action. Now, a year later, Rufo is optimistic that Americans, including some to left of center politically, are "waking up." He attributes the change to the gruesome and deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas and the radical Left's unflinching (and often antisemitic) criticism of Israel that followed. "After 10/7, when those same people who were marching for BLM, who were pushing trans in schools, who were ramping up DEI, when they're out there celebrating the terrorists who butchered, raped, and murdered innocent people, I think it caused this moment of horror, but also this moment of clarity," Rufo told The Daily Signal. The popular writer, filmmaker, and activist—whose work is available at ChristopherRufo.com—was in Washington, D.C., last week to accept The Heritage Foundation’s prestigious Salvatori Prize. Her Husband Paid the Ultimate Sacrifice in Service to America

Audri Beugelsdijk had been married for less than 11 weeks when she received a visit from a casualty officer. Her husband has been lost at sea on the USS Kinkaid. “It's just the last thing that you could imagine happening and it just turned my world upside down,” Beugelsdijk says. Beugelsdijk and her husband Jason Springer met in the Navy and the two “became very good friends and then it turned into something else, as often happens,” she says. “He loved what he did. He had a bounce in his step and was ready to change the world, and it was a shock to my core when he died.” Only days after receiving the news of her husband’s death, Beugelsdijk, who was also serving in the Navy, learned about the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, an organization that provides support to the families of fallen service members. “I picked up the phone and I called and that was the first time I connected with another person who looked like me and who was a young widow who understood what I was going through,” she recounts. TAPS provides peer counseling and practical support resources to family members who have lost loved ones while serving, or after serving in the military. Years after she received much needed support from the nonprofit, Beugelsdijk is serving other families in the same way as vice president of survivor services for TAPS. Beugelsdijk joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” on Memorial Day to share her story of loss and grief, and to explain how the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors has, and continues to serve thousands of family members of fallen service members. SHOCKER: Elites Favor Limiting Voting to College Graduates

New polling from Scott Rasmussen reveals that America's elite 1%—those with high incomes, urban residences, and postgraduate degrees—are significantly out of step with the rest of the country on a range of issues. It’s a troubling trend for America, and it doesn’t bode well for our future considering the elite 1% occupy many of the leadership roles in our cultural, educational, and government institutions. There's perhaps no statistic more shocking than the 69% of politically obsessed elites who think it would be better if only people with college degrees could vote. By comparison, just 15% of all voters hold that view. (Rasmussen defines "politically obsessed" as elites who talk about politics every day.) Rasmussen's latest survey, conducted by RMG Research, asked other questions ranging from government censorship to gun ownership. On nearly every issue, there's a wide gulf between the ruling class and everyday Americans. You can learn more about work on the elite 1% by tuning into "The Scott Rasmussen Show," which airs Sunday at 10 a.m. ET on Merit Street Media. Hosted on Acast. Why Hamas Is to Blame for Gaza Famine

A Columbia University professor says Hamas is responsible for the ongoing famine in Gaza. “It is in Hamas' interest, as they have defined it, to actually create a situation of misery and starvation, rather than worrying about its population and making sure that its population stays safe,” according to Awi Federgruen, a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and a global supply chain expert. The United Nations says there is a “full-blown famine” in northern Gaza, which has led to additional pressure on Israel to allow more aid into the region, but Federgruen says the problem lies more in the aid not reaching the people it is intended to help. “A quick analysis shows that the amount of food that is coming in from Israel is absolutely plentiful to feed every single individual that lives in Gaza,” the professor says. In recent weeks, Federgruen says, food truck deliveries were slowed because “Hamas has chosen to send its rockets specifically to the crossings.” Federgruen joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to unpack what is known about the food shortage in Gaza, and Hamas' role in blocking civilian aid. He also discusses the continued fallout from weeks of anti-Israel protests at Columbia University. Enjoy the show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. How Taiwan’s New President May Change His Country’s Tense Relationship With China

F-16s flew overhead, marching bands played, and singers entertained with cultural performances during Taiwan’s presidential inauguration on Monday. The inauguration of President Lai Ching-te was “quite the party,” Asia analyst Michael Cunningham tells “The Daily Signal Podcast,” after attending the event in Taiwan. The new president has a challenging job in front of him as the country continues to face threats of hostility from China. Lai’s inaugural speech was overall “probably the most direct and the hardest-line inaugural address we've seen towards China yet,” says Cunningham, who serves as a research fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Asian Studies Center. (Heritage founded The Daily Signal in 2014.) The new president likely angered leaders in Beijing, according to Cunningham, when during the speech he said the Republic of China—Taiwan—and the People's Republic of China are “not subordinate to each other.” While Cunningham calls this statement “common sense,” it is also “not something that you say generally if you're the president of Taiwan” because China interprets this as a “two-China philosophy,” when China actually considers Taiwan a part of the mainland. Ultimately, Cunningham says Lai is expected to seek to preserve the status quo between China and Taiwan. Cunningham joins the show to discuss where the relationship between China and Taiwan stands and whether America’s relationship with Taiwan is expected to change under Lai’s presidency. A Mother's Story: Her Daughter Was Harassed By a Boy on the Girls’ Team

Abby Cross and her husband went to the leadership of their daughter’s Bridgeport, West Virginia, middle school with concerns over a biological male competing alongside their daughter in athletics. “Nothing changed” for their daughter following the conversation, Cross says. Adaleia Cross, her mom says, has always loved sports and was excited to be a part of her middle-school track and field team. But with a biological male competing alongside her, Adaleia not only began losing opportunities to compete because of the male student outperforming her, but also was subject to harassment at the hands of the student—even sexual harassment. “To make matters worse and more insulting,” her mother explained that “besides the sexual harassment, this student was saying things like, ‘You have more testosterone than I do, and I'm still beating you,’ which is just incredibly insulting.” Unfortunately, Adaleia is a part of an ever-growing group of young women who have lost out on sports opportunities because of boys and men entering girls' and women’s sports, who have been subjected to having to share locker rooms with males, and have even facied harassment from males who identify as females. Now, women across the nation are facing a similar risk thanks to a Biden administration rule change to Title IX set to take effect Aug. 1. The Biden administration has rewritten the definition of sex in Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to include gender identity and sexual orientation. The change swings the door wide open for males to enter female-only spaces and compete in girls' and women’s sports. A number of lawsuits have been filed since the Biden administration officially announced the new rule, including one by the conservative legal nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom. Alliance Defending Freedom is working to block the Title IX rule change on behalf of women and girls such as Adaleia Cross, and ADF attorney Rachel Rouleau says she is “very hopeful that this rule will be stayed and won't go into effect on [Aug. 1], at least while the litigation in these cases goes on.” Abby Cross and Rouleau join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share Adaleia’s story and to discuss where the lawsuits to stop the Title IX rule change stand. Corey DeAngelis: School Choice and the 'Parent Revolution'

There’s a war being waged for America’s elementary, middle, and high school students. But the leftist agenda-driven campaign that began behind the closed doors of teachers unions and government-run schools is now out in the open and has led to a “parent revolution,” says Corey DeAngelis. The "teachers unions overplayed their hand and awakened a sleeping giant, which happens to be parents who want more of a say in their kids' education," says DeAngelis, author of “The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools.” DeAngelis—sometimes referred to as the "school choice evangelist"—dedicated his new book to "Randi Weingarten [president of the American Federation of Teachers] and the teachers unions for inadvertently doing more to advance school choice and homeschooling than anyone could have ever imagined." School choice programs, which give parents the opportunity to use their tax dollars to send their children to a private school or even to homeschool them, are restoring parents' power over their children’s education. Already, states across America are embracing school choice. "We now have 11 states with universal school choice," DeAngelis says, adding the programs are a fulfillment of the late Nobel Prize-winning economist "Milton Friedman's vision for all families" to have choice over their children's education. DeAngelis, a senior fellow at the American Federation for Children and a visiting fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, and Jason Bedrick, a research fellow in the Center for Education Policy at The Heritage Foundation, join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss why school choice programs are a rising tide that will lift all of America’s education system.
