The Katherine Massey Book Club hosts the 14th and final study session on Catherine Pelonero's 2017 publication, Absolute Madness: A True Story of a Serial Killer, Race, and a City Divided. We'll make our final assessment of Joey's reign of terror and ponder why Pelonero included so much detail about the White Supremacist components of this case since her agenda is to transmogrify a White Supremacist serial killer into a victim of mental illness. We'll re-state the significance of Pelonero's deliberate exclusion of the local black press - The Buffalo Challenger & The Buffalo Criterion. In fact, Pelonero may have completely excluded all of the black journalists, like the late Chet Fuller, who did exemplary work reporting on these murders of black males. Alongside the erasure of the black press, Pelonero says nothing about accused child rapist Father Michael Freeman, who is a major figure in this case. Allegations against him were published one year after the release of this book. However, the enormity of the child rape system within the Catholic church was well established by 2017. Buffalo is Pelonero's hometown, her father was a police officer here, and as an allegedly good-lookin' White Woman, she has access to all kinds of information and people on the Buffalo scuttlebutt. Last week, Pelonero invested lots of time impugning the credentials of the Erie county prosecution's British psychiatrist Russell Barton. Readers are told this guy is a no count Nazi-sympathizing, holocaust denier who also insists good ol' Joey is sane. Once again, all kinds of Whites think Joey is a swell dude who deserves heaps of our sympathy - along with his White mother, Therese. Joey apparently feels awful about people assuming he's Racist and hates black guys. Pelonero also invests lots of energy persuading readers that Joey didn't kill and mutilate two black cab drivers. She retreats to the same lame theory from forty years ago - that Parler Edwards and Ernest Jones were victims of the numbers racket. The Context of White Supremacy Radio Program welcomes Curtis Wilkie. An octogenarian and native of Greenville, Mississippi, Wilkie is a retired journalist, historian and author. An alumnus of the University of Mississippi - affectionately known as Ole Miss, Wilkie was classmates with Air Force veteran and counter-racist legend, James Meredith. As Meredith is a personal hero of Gus, we'll ask about the Terrorism Meredith experienced while being Ole Miss classmates with Wilkie. We'll also explore his recent text, When Evil Lived in Laurel: The 'White Knights' and the Murder of Vernon Dahmer. Just a few years after Meredith "tarnished" Mississippi's lily White, flagship university, civil rights workers within the state continued to attack all areas of people activity. Vernon Dahmer, a black male, worked fearlessly to register black voters. White Terrorists threatened he and his family and ultimately killed Dahmer - affectionately referred to as "the Dahmer Nigger." Wilkie's books focuses mostly on the actions of White FBI informant Tom Landrum. After being recruited by the FBI to infiltrate and report on the Jones County Klan, Landrum snitches on Klan activities because he allegedly hates "kluckers" and their violent, crude, boorish conduct. Everything about this work promotes the lie that we've made lots of "progress" eliminating White Supremacy. Wilkie, like all other White historian and authors, criminally minimizes the FBI's COINTELPRO activities - which targeted many/all of the black activists working in Mississippi who are mentioned in Wilkie's book (Fannie Lou Hamer, Bob Moses, Vernon Dahmer, Medgar Evers, Charles Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dick Gregory). Similar to the deceitful 1988 motion picture Mississippi Burning, Wilkie's FBI pimp smacks Mississippi rednecks and break rules to punish Racists. This wacky history book features no footnotes within the body of the text. Because of the volume of chunky quotes from a variety of people, readers may think a stenographer was present for every backwoods Mississippi conversations. Just days ago, a C.O.W.S. listener and mother wrote in to describe her child's experience working at a dollar store. It's common for teens to begin their work experience in retail, the location's close to their residence. Her child reported his attempt to question a White tandem who appeared to be looting soda pop. Team members did not support her son - even when the would-be White thieves rebuffed requests to produce a receipt. Gus's suggestion back then was to refrain from pursuing shoplifters too hard. Low and behold, black dollar store employees in Louisiana are considering a union to improve work conditions. One of the problems cited was safety. A black male reported that he attempted to question a potential shoplifter. This smuggler also declined to produce a receipt, but he did brandish a firearm. Gus strongly discourages risking your black (non-white) life for any products - or White employees - at any dollar store. And we'll hear about the workplace abuse of Shakeem Peterson, a black naval veteran and a former employee of Ring Power Corporation in Florida. As opposed to being venerated for his sacrifice and service to "country," Peterson was mocked and taunted as a "maid." This was scheduled to be our concluding study session on this text. However, Gus. T. and listeners have emphasized the widespread sexual abuse in the Buffalo Catholic church. Low and behold, Father Michael R. Freeman has several substantiated claims of child rape. In fact, even during the time that Father Freeman met Joey and testified at his murder trial, Freeman was allegedly raping children - sometimes at gun point. The Buffalo diocese was aware of Freeman's child molestation and assisted him in evading law enforcement. These crimes were widely publicized in 2018 and are extremely relevant to this book. There's flagrant anti-sex/homosexual activity and sexual deviance throughout the text - including prostitution and wide age differentials between partners. The widespread rape and concealment exposes the lie (rhetorical ethic) of kindly, pious Whites who are devoted to their faith and humanitarian objectives. Last week, Pelonero provided vivid details of Joey's childhood influences. His father Nicholas was known as an "extreme Racist." He found a "kindred spirit" with a fellow neighborhood Racist, and the treacherous tandem vandalized public parks to intimidate black visitors. Stunningly, Pelonero spoke with neighbors who remembered Nicholas terrorizing black pedestrians by firing a pellet gun and shouting Racist slurs when black people approached the area. Dr. Kenneth O'Reilly returns to The Context of White Supremacy Radio Program. An emeritus professor of history at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Dr. O'Reilly specializes in U.S. politics, presidential history, and "race relations." We've spoken with Dr. O'Reilly twice before about his books: Nixon's Piano: Presidents and Racial Politics from Washington to Clinton; and Racial Matters: The FBI's Secret File on Black America, 1960 to 1972. In 2009, The C.O.W.S. had only returned to the air for 2 months when Dr. O'Reilly first spoke with us about COINTELPRO - the FBI's clandestine surveillance program to neutralize non-white people who attempted to counter-racism. The impetus to speak with Dr. O'Reilly at this moment was last week's conversation with Florida State University's Fannie Lou Hamer Professor of Rhetorical Studies, Dr. Davis W. Houck. This White Man wrote a history book on Mississippi's 1964 Freedom Summer campaign and completely omitted COINTELPRO. J. Edgar Hoover, Stokley Carmichael, Ella Baker, John Lewis, and Bob Moses are just a few of the main characters in the book. Except FBI director Hoover, all of these people were COINTELPRO victims. To the contrary, Dr. O'Reilly's book contains an entire chapter on Hoover and the Justice Department's nefarious behavior during Freedom Summer. NPR investigated allegations against an Alabama Hyundai plant where teenage children were subjected to abusive work conditions. Just this month, the east side Tops grocery store where Massey and 9 other black people were slaughtered has re-opened. Many black residents wanted the building destroyed. The Race Soldier, Payton Gendron, was federally charged with 27 counts of hate crime and weapons violations. He could face the death penalty if convicted. Last week, Pelonero detailed the accounts of some of Joey's other black co-workers. They described him as a "crazy" White boy who "popped pills" and joked around with the black employees. They did not think of him as a Racist. Pelonero continues to sympathize with this psychopathic serial killer, insisting that the media immediately castigated and convicted him as a Racist killer. She also finds fault with journalists reminding readers that Christopher dropped out of high school - something routinely done with black victims of violent crime. The Context of White Supremacy Radio Program welcomes Nicholas Gunn. A writer for the Benton Spirit Newspaper and founder of Nick Eats, Mr. Gunn is a Michigan epicurean who enjoys supporting local businesses. He also holds the current title for Mr. Benton Harbor, crowned at the Blossom Time Community Pageant. 18-year-old Gunn came to Gus's attention after he was mauled by a pair of White Men at the recent Krasl Art Fair in St. Joseph, Michigan. The Suspected Race Soldiers physically attacked Gunn and called him ni@@#$ in defense of their copyrighted work. Gus was fascinated with this report because Gunn's attempted family warned him about St. Joseph, Michigan. Although only a six minute drive from Benton Harbor, a predominantly black town, St. Joseph is a Racially Restricted Region (sundown town). According the 2020 US census, more than 85% of the residents are classified as White. The late James Loewen's research site reports that Racists in St. Joseph allegedly raised the drawbridges to reduce black people's access to town. The Fannie Lou Hamer Professor of Rhetorical Studies at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Dr. Houck's research interests include rhetorical criticism, presidential rhetoric, the Black Freedom Movement, historiography and archival research. Dr. Houck was born raised in Mansfield, Ohio - which was strong KKK territory during the 20th century. We'll discuss brand new book, Black Bodies in the River: Searching for Freedom Summer. This book examines the lore around the 1964 murders of James Chaney and those two White boys. Since White Lives Matter, media and enforcement officers devoted maximum time and energy to covering this case and prosecuting the killers. Black Bodies in the River explores the unnamed black victims of violence who didn't get the attention of the Freedom Summer killings. Since the FBI is mentioned often in this text, it would seem COINTELPRO should receive at least a sentence or a footnote. Dr. Houck said he was familiar with Dr. Kenneth O'Reilly's book, Racial Matters: The FBI's Secret File on Black America 1960 to 1972. However, he's not read it. NPR reported that a 20-year-old White Man killed three people who "all had Latino surnames." Greenwood - like Highland Park and Conklin, N.Y. - is a Racially Restricted Region (sundown town). In Mississippi, a White police chief was terminated after a recording was published where Sam Dobbins bragged about killing 13 black males. In fact, he told co-workers that he shot a niggra 119 times in a cornfield. Across the pond in South Africa, a White student was expelled from Stellenbosch University after he recorded himself urinating on a black classmates computer and other possessions. Theuns du Toit may also face criminal charges for the vile act. In the days since our last reading, the east side Tops grocery store where Massey and 9 other black people were slaughtered has re-opened. Many black residents wanted the building destroyed. The Race Soldier, Payton Gendron, was federally charged with 27 counts of hate crime and weapons violations. He could face the death penalty if convicted. Last week, Pelonero detailed the indicted and extradition procedure against "Joey." She suggested that the media spun a narrative of Christopher bragging and boasting about killing black people so that the public has an uncomplicated story about a lone, Racist killer. Pelonero continues to insist that this White man is "crazy," a pitiful dingbat. Ernie Smith, a black male and former co-worker of Christopher, was interviewed for the investigation. He said that he and "Joey" used to wrestle and "fool around" after work. In the proceeding paragraph, Smith says that sometimes he and Joey would "fool around" with "street girls" (sex workers), although Christopher would not have intercourse with the female workers. The homoeroticism of the text is boundless. Gus suspects "Joey" was sexually attracted to and perhaps involved with black males like Ernie Smith and maybe even Collin Cole, a transvestite who worked the streets as a prostitute named "Wilma." The Context of White Supremacy Radio Program revisits July 27th, 2013 Compensatory Call-In. This program aired two weeks after the conclusion to the Trayvon Martin murder trial. Dr. Welsing joined us on, July 21st to discuss the teen's death and weeks of courtroom action. During her commentary, she promoted Neely Fuller Jr's 10 Stops and added her own suggestions - which included abstaining from drug use. A professor in SUNY Buffalo State's Department of Geography and Planning, Dr. Knight’s research interest focuses on the physical and social evolution of cities and their constituent neighborhoods, with a particular interest in policy and planning for distressed neighborhoods. A C.O.W.S. listener sent Gus his 2018 report: Walkable and resurgent for whom? The uneven geographies of walkability in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Knight documents how black Buffalo residents are stockpiled in parts of the city where few amenities can be reached on foot. This makes it harder for black people to access employment opportunities, enjoy the health benefits of walking to work or the supermarket, and makes for consistently inefficient travel. This type of refined White Supremacy is just as deadly as Payton Gendron, the teenage White Terrorist who killed 10 black people in an east Buffalo Tops grocery store. We'll get Dr. Knight's thoughts on last week's re-opening of the supermarket just weeks after the massacre. White Men from Illinois to Virginia to Texas continue to plot out gun massacres in the U.S. There's been so much carnage, many have totally forgotten that an 18-year-old White man killed almost a dozen black people on the East side of Buffalo, New York this spring. In the same vein, we've barely spoken to anyone (White or non-white) who knew any details about Joey Christopher's terrorist assault on black citizens of New York. Last week, Pelonero stressed how everyone felt awful for Christopher's White mother, Therese. Police executed a search warrant on her residence, but insisted they would complete their probe and exit the house expeditiously. White neighbors and even Joey's former White girlfriend sympathized with the suspected killer. His former girlfriend allegedly felt bad about revealing so much information to officers. Officials in Ft. Benning, Georgia where Christopher was stationed, told investigators that Joey was an average soldier who physically attacked a number of non-white troops who called him names and mocked his masculinity. Crimo dressed as a Woman to evade police, and contemplated starting a second terrorist attack before he was apprehended. Highland Park is a suspected Racially Restricted Region/"sundown town," with a very low population of black people (1% or less according to the Chicago Tribune). In Richmond, Virginia, enforcement officials arrested two suspects who allegedly planned similar carnage for the Commonwealth state. Ohio's 4th of July celebration switched to protests, anger and curfews over the police killing of Jayland Walker. It's reported that Walker sustained 60 (sixty) wounds, and approximately 90 rounds were fired. The fatal shooting was last month, and evidence from the killing suggests White officers lied about what happened. Across the pond, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is once again facing demands to resign. Former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher is accused of groping males and other acts of debauchery. Pincher was appointed by Johnson, and now both are facing calls to resign. Correction. Johnson submitted his resignation before week's end. A professor of politics, geography and international studies at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, Dr. Kraus is Department Chair, Pre-Law Advisor, as well as Chair of the International Studies Program. He pays particular attention to race and politics. Since the White Terrorist slaughter at an east Buffalo Tops grocery store, where 10 black people were killed, Gus has devoted substantial time and energy to studying the history of White Terrorist violence in Buffalo. While digging at the University of Washington library, Gus found Dr. Kraus's book, Race, Neighborhoods, and Community Power: Buffalo Politics, 1934 - 1997. This work provides a comprehensive history of west New York, and the many ways Whites have deliberately maintained and refined the System of White Supremacy in all areas of people activity. However, it fails to mention the 22 Caliber Killer, Joseph G. Christopher and his butchering of numerous black males in Buffalo. The killings occurred in the middle of the time frame this book explores and further evidence some of the major themes of his book. We just recognized 7 years since the Charleston, South Carolina Terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel AME church, where nine black worshipers were killed. Gracyn Doctor, daughter of the Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, one of the nine people murdered, recently said we seem to be forgetting the South Carolina and more recent May 2022 Buffalo shootings already. Seeing as practically no one remembers the black males butchered in 1980 Buffalo and New York state, Gracyn has reason for concern. Last week, Pelonero detailed the murder of Roger Adams and the near murder of Albert Menefee. Once again, a White witness describes feeling "safe" seeing the presence of a White stranger, who happened to be a racist serial killer. Adams's child reportedly views his father's corpse on television. Pelonero also details an attack on a White Woman, Kim Edmiston. This assault was not initially linked to the "22 Caliber Killings." Pelonero emphasizes that a number of black residents set booby traps to catch the killer and claim the reward money. Nearly a half a year passed since the killings began, and the police made no arrests. In fact, the Klan orchestrated a rally on Dr. Martin Luther King's' birthday of 1981 in downtown Buffalo. Wade decision on abortion. The SCOTUS had other rulings this week. They also decided against New York State's legal prohibition on the concealed carry of firearms. In Belgium, White officials agreed to send the remains of former Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Eric Bryan Stone. His website says he "was raised in the epitome of 'White America,'" Neely Fuller Jr.'s Oklahoma. Stone said he ditched the rural highlands to trot the globe with his pops. Now, Stone has amassed a sizeable "online" following for his "condemnation of racism and the 'white narrative.' We'll ask what Mr. Stone does to solve The Problem and how he helps non-white people get a better understanding of White Supremacy/Racism. Mr. Stone departed abruptly after sixty minutes and buckets and buckets and buckets of metaphors. Since we started this book, Buffalo's most recent White Terrorist, Payton Gendron, was charged with 10 counts of first degree murder and one count of a Domestic Act of Terrorism Motivated by Hate in the First Degree. The latter charge is unprecedented in New York state history. Last week, we heard about a cross burning on the east side of Buffalo in 1980. Pelonero quotes enforcement officials who said they concluded black people ignited the fire to add to the conflict around the killings of black males. Many black people in the Buffalo area did not "turn the other cheek." Pelonero describes how numerous black residents confronted unfamiliar White people, launched rocks at passing White motorists, and even killed a White Man, Terence Mills. Jesse Jackson Sr. visited west New York in October of 1980 to appeal for calm and encourage black people to vote. Five days after this press conference, the Bowen Homes Day Care Center exploded in Atlanta, Georgia killing 5 black children. Blatto is a White Woman. While in college, Blatto authored the 2018 report: A City Divided: A Brief History of Segregation in Buffalo. The report details a long deliberate, effort on the part of people classified as White to mistreat and subjugate black residents of west New York. This information helps explain the region where Payton Gendron hunted and killed ten black people at an east Buffalo Tops grocery store. We'll discuss the reasons why black people in Buffalo were victims of White Terrorism decades before Gendron was born.
