Ivan Balabanov is one of the most recognised master coaches in the sporting dog world. Ivan has a career spanning 40 years in the dog training industry and has amassed multiple titles. He has achieved 2 world champion positions through IGP, he’s a celebrated FCI judge and author. In fact you would have to be living in a vacuum if your are in the dog world and have never heard his name. Credentials aside, Ivan has done enormous work for advocacy in both balanced training and the use of tools. He has brought creditable knowledge to the table and assisted in educating leagues of mislead souls. The acronym of the book is Behavior Adjustment Training, which is mainly directed at dogs with aggression issues. Brent Dry’s lock down experience was an eye opener for us in Australia who didn’t realise what was happening in Victoria. Brent who is usually an upbeat, happy social community leader lost his mojo. The good news, he got it back, however it was a eye opener on what lock down did to him and so many others. Victoria, the south eastern state in Australia was subjected to one of the most intensive lock down terms in the world. Following up on being bitten takes off from episode 132 where we initially spoke about the subject. Because we had so many people reaching out that had also been bitten, we decided it would be a good idea to follow up. So many of our listeners shared personal experiences of the personal anguish they were going through. Coping with being bitten is quite an undertaking as it can really change your perspective. It really can be something difficult to comprehend as it feels so personal. Being bitten can and does change your relationship with your dog as it can leave you feeling violated. It can make you question your confidence and safety with your dog and many times your ability as a trainer. In this episode we try and make a little sense of why these things happen and give suggestions on how to cope. However, as we are not psychologists, we can only make recommendations when thoughts are too serious. In the event you do find yourself struggling with your thoughts, we always recommend the council of a trained professional. One to examine the dogs behaviour and perhaps someone to help with your thoughts. Dogs bite for a lot of reasons, therefore we suggest being aware of the events leading up to being bitten. Scent detection is an art form in dog training that is best described as a methodology with many nuances. Two very well respected trainers who are well known for their work in scent training join us for this episode. Sami Jo Menning has been learning to hunt with her father when she was a young girl. Now she has taken the next steps with her passion of hunting with dogs to teach other young ladies. Seeing that it was a difficult sport/ hobby to get into, Sami has set up a group called, Her wilderness so other ladies can learn and be involved. Interviewing a new trainer should be a process that all new and existing dog owners strongly consider. We say this because a lot of time, people end up with the wrong trainer for a range of different reasons. Many of these are because they didn’t do their homework in the first place. Diminishing return is an episode that focus’s around a point of obsession. That area is based around people who too much of something, which throws their life plan out of balance. For example, think of a student who studies for a job. Once they get the qualification, they then feel that perhaps they should do some more study to stay ahead of the game. Then, after they finish that course, they enrol in another and then another and so on. Now they are in a phase of diminishing return. Peggy’s promise is a pet rescue charity organisation located on the central coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is mainly run by three ladies, Sharon, Eleni and Megan with a score of wonderful volunteers. These people give so much to all the throw away pets in society by opening their homes and their hearts. Pat Nolan’s Covid project is a promising look into the potential of dogs being trained to detect Covid-19. We understand that there are no guarantees in this field, however it’s exciting nonetheless. We’re very supportive of Pat Nolan being a part of this project as it has potential to change the world. It’s a part of our life for now to keep hearing the word Covid – 19 or Corona virus. We’re sick of it for the most part as it has stopped the world and disrupped what we know as normal. However, we don’t mind hearing about Covid -19, if we have promising news about its demise. The six p’s is an episode that focuses entirely on being a better organised dog owner or handler. The six p’s mean that proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. It’s an expression that’s been around for quite a while and is still used frequently in many services. When you think about it though, it’s hard to argue with. When you have a plan, it makes the operation so much easier. It relieves stress, because you’re organised, it increases the time factor, it prevents frustration and adds more value to your life. There are so many positive factors that it’s almost hard to think we wouldn’t do it. However we are human. It’s easy for us to become motivated by other pursuits. If it sounds familiar, it’s something that annoys us about our own dogs behaviour. Therefore, if we identify it early, we can collectively work on resolving that as an issue as well.
