Episode 314: Brave new science and deprivation
In Episode 314 of The Canine Paradigm, we explore training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs by discussing a groundbreaking study titled “Comparison of the Efficacy and Welfare of Different Training Methods in Stopping Chasing Behavior in Dogs.” This study offers valuable insights into how different training approaches affect the success of stopping unwanted behaviours, particularly chasing, while considering the welfare of the dogs involved. We break down the study’s findings, highlighting the pros and cons of various training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs. The research reveals that different methods can lead to varying degrees of success, especially when considering the impact on the dog’s well-being. In addition, we delve into the topic of deprivation in dog training. While deprivation can sometimes enhance the effectiveness of training methods to stop chasing behaviour in dogs, it also raises concerns about ethics and welfare. We discuss how this approach fits into modern dog training and what it means for both the effectiveness and overall welfare of the dog. Episode 313: What dumb stuff is the owner doing
In Episode 313 of The Canine Paradigm, we dive deep into the intricacies of reward placement, direct and indirect reinforcement, and how these elements impact training success. Moreover, understanding where and how you deliver rewards can drastically shape your dog’s behaviour. In particular, we explore the nuances of direct reinforcement, where the reward is tied closely to the dog’s action, versus indirect reinforcement, where the reward is less immediate. Additionally, one of the key insights is how improper reward placement can lead to undesirable behaviours, including the development of chewy grips. For instance, we discuss why dogs may develop chewy grips when rewards are poorly timed or misplaced, and how owners often unknowingly contribute to this problem. As a result, it’s all too common for dog owners to unintentionally reinforce the wrong behaviours, leading to a confused or over-excited dog. Finally, our goal is to help you become a more effective dog handler by shedding light on the small details that can make a huge difference in your training outcomes. Join us in this episode as we explain the connection between reinforcement strategies and common training challenges. Episode 312: Training a bored dog to dig a hole
In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we dive into a range of topics discussed in our training forum, including how to handle a bored dog and avoid turning them into a reactive mess. One common problem is how some dog owners inadvertently derail their dog’s training by making critical mistakes. We also explore how household partners, who aren’t fully invested in the training process, contribute to ongoing behavioural issues. Moreover, we address the growing tension with force-free (FF) trainers and how their fear-mongering campaigns seem to be escalating. Rather than promoting balanced methods, some FF trainers are increasingly pushing extreme narratives that leave dog owners feeling anxious and overwhelmed. A major takeaway from this episode is the importance of consistency in training. A bored dog can quickly develop destructive behaviours, like digging, when they’re not properly engaged. However, a lack of unity in the household can make even the best training programs ineffective. This episode provides actionable advice on how to engage your dog, keep them stimulated, and ensure all family members are on board with the training. Episode 311: Dog trainers and invisible new clothes
In the classic tale The Emperor’s New Clothes, the emperor is deceived into believing he is wearing fine garments when, in fact, he is wearing nothing at all. Similarly, some dog trainers on social media are forcing a narrative of success that does not truly exist. They craft stories of quick fixes and foolproof methods, but when dog owners apply these methods, the results often fall short. As a result, dog owners frequently find themselves frustrated when reality fails to meet the promises made by these trainers. By forcing a narrative of success, these trainers rely heavily on flashy marketing and carefully edited videos to push their agenda. They insist their methods are perfect and will yield guaranteed results. However, when dog owners try to replicate these techniques at home, they soon discover that the narrative doesn’t hold up. The promises of instant transformation simply do not deliver in real-world situations. Furthermore, these trainers often double down on forcing a narrative by blaming the dog owners when the methods fail. Instead of admitting that the training approach may be flawed, they claim the owner didn’t follow instructions properly. Consequently, dog owners end up doubting their abilities rather than recognising that the real issue lies in the forced narrative itself. Therefore, to avoid being misled by such tactics, it is crucial for dog owners to find trainers who focus on delivering real, sustainable results rather than forcing a narrative that only serves to build their social media presence. Just as the emperor eventually realised he had been deceived, dog owners must see through the illusion. In the end, forcing a narrative may create temporary attention, but genuine success comes from proven, effective training methods that stand the test of time. Episode 310: Dog trainers and the Olympics
In Episode 310 of The Canine Paradigm, we discuss the dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal and its implications for both the sports world and our industry. The controversy surrounding Rachael Raygun’s performance highlights a troubling trend: the perceived privilege of those with academic credentials, particularly PhDs, as the sole authorities on complex issues. However, this bias isn’t limited to sports. In dog training, the divide between those with formal academic qualifications and those with extensive practical experience continues to grow. The dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal shows that assuming PhDs alone hold all the answers is misguided. Moreover, this mindset creates rifts within our industry and undervalues the real-world expertise that experienced trainers bring to the table. Furthermore, we’re concerned about the ongoing narrative that unfairly targets balanced trainers. Labelling these professionals as “punishment trainers” relies on emotional misinformation, which only serves to divide the community. This kind of gas lighting is exhausting and does nothing to improve dog training quality or the well-being of the dogs we care for. Therefore, it’s time for a more balanced approach—one that respects both academic knowledge and practical experience. By fostering a more inclusive and open-minded discussion, we can create better outcomes for everyone, whether in the sports arena or within the dog training field. Episode 309: The ladder of dog aggression
n Episode 309 of our podcast, we dive into the critical concept of the canine ladder of aggression. This episode is a must-listen for both new and experienced dog trainers, as we break down the visual tool that illustrates the various levels of aggression in dogs, ranging from subtle signals to more overt behaviours. Using the traffic light system, the ladder of aggression is an essential framework that helps trainers and handlers understand where a dog might be on the spectrum of stress and aggression. This system categorises the dog’s behaviour into green, yellow, and red zones, representing calm, warning, and dangerous stages, respectively. Understanding these levels is crucial for preventing escalation and managing situations effectively. By recognising early signs of discomfort, trainers can intervene before a dog reaches a critical point, ensuring safer interactions for both dogs and handlers. Episode 308: Are dog sports linked to Nazis?
In a recent podcast episode, we addressed a controversial claim regarding the origins of dog sports, specifically an unfounded assertion that these activities and police dogs have ties to Nazi Germany. However, it is crucial to clarify that the origins of dog sports, such as obedience, agility, and protection work, are deeply rooted in history, well before any association with extremist ideologies. These sports were developed to enhance the bond between humans and dogs, promote physical fitness, and celebrate canine capabilities. Moreover, the spread of misinformation, often perpetuated by content creators on platforms like YouTube, can distort the true origins of dog sports. Some creators, unfortunately, prioritize sensationalism over accuracy to attract views and generate income, which can lead to misleading narratives. Therefore, it’s essential for viewers to critically assess the sources of information. Additionally, content creators should uphold standards of accuracy and responsibility to avoid spreading falsehoods. here’s an episode where we talk about the building of PSA Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 305: How to successfully put the dog back on lead
Putting the dog back on lead is a fundamental skill that can significantly enhance training and repair various behavioural issues. Experts in the field emphasise the importance of this practice for both novice and experienced dog owners. They believe that putting the dog back on lead helps reinforce obedience, control, and trust between the handler and the dog. This practice can correct behaviours such as pulling, lunging, and ignoring commands. When a dog is back on lead, it must focus on the handler, which strengthens the dog’s response to commands. This consistent practice helps dogs understand their boundaries and the expectations set by their owners. Additionally, putting the dog back on lead can be a confidence booster for both the dog and the owner. It provides a structured environment where the dog can relearn and practice essential skills, making it easier to address and correct unwanted behaviours. The lead acts as a communication tool, guiding the dog and reinforcing positive behaviour. Incorporating this practice into daily training routines ensures that dogs remain well-behaved and responsive. The simple act of putting the dog back on lead is a powerful method to enhance skills, repair training issues, and foster a stronger bond between the dog and the owner. Episode 302: American dog training bonanza
The past couple of weeks in Sydney have been nothing short of amazing. We were thrilled to welcome our American family, Shawn and Janet Edwards, along with their colleagues Zack Burke and Travis Lloyd. Their expertise and passion for training were invaluable as they joined us for PSA trial judging, decoy certification, Deadpool decoy school, and Janet’s seminar. Training is at the heart of everything we do, and having these experts with us elevated our sessions to new heights. The PSA trial judging was rigorous and insightful, providing our participants with constructive feedback to refine their techniques. Moreover, the decoy certification process was equally intense, ensuring that our decoys are prepared for any scenario. One of the highlights was the Deadpool decoy school, where Zack and Travis showcased their advanced skills and strategies. This left our team inspired and eager to incorporate these new methods into our training routines. Additionally, Janet’s seminar was another standout, offering deep dives into specialized training techniques that captivated everyone in attendance. Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of continuous training and collaboration. Consequently, we are grateful to Shawn, Janet, Zack, and Travis for their dedication and expertise. Their contributions have undoubtedly made a lasting impact on our training programs, and we look forward to future collaborations. Episode 301: How to run a positive punishment seminar
In this episode of our podcast, we tackle the often misunderstood topic of punishment in dog training. There’s been a lot of misinformation circulating, including the outrageous claim that balanced trainers hold positive punishment seminars. We want to set the record straight and explain how punishment, when used correctly, plays a vital role in teaching dogs to eliminate or reduce unwanted behaviors. Punishment, in the context of dog training, is not about abuse or harsh methods. It’s about providing clear boundaries and consequences that help dogs understand which behaviors are undesirable. This clarity aids in creating a structured environment where dogs can thrive. One of the key points we discuss is the difference between punishment and abuse. While punishment is a controlled, measured response to a specific behavior, abuse is harmful and unacceptable. Understanding this distinction is crucial for anyone involved in dog training. Throughout the episode, we also delve into how punishment, when balanced with positive reinforcement, can be an effective tool. It’s about finding the right balance and ensuring that the well-being of the dog is always the priority. Join us as we dispel myths and provide insights into the responsible use of punishment in dog training. Listen now to gain a better understanding and become a more informed trainer. Episode 299: What’s more dangerous than ignorance?
In our latest podcast episode, we tackle a critical topic: the peril of false knowledge. While ignorance poses risks, misinformation masquerading as truth can be far more dangerous. Recently, a comment on social media claimed that men are more likely to attend positive punishment seminars than women. This statement is not only unfounded but also misleading. Throughout our extensive careers in the dog training industry, we have never encountered anyone running or hosting such seminars. Positive punishment, which involves adding an aversive consequence after an undesired behaviour, can be used in training but only under the right circumstances. It should assist the dog in learning how to avoid a behaviour, be used sparingly, and always with compassion. Furthermore, we delve into the South Australian government’s proposed plan to ban IPG (International Working Dog trial) training. This proposal represents an outrageous example of government overreach. Such regulations not only undermine professional training methods but also spread misinformation about the nature and purpose of IPG. Effective dog training requires balanced, informed approaches that prioritise both the dog’s and the handler’s well-being. Ignorance can lead to the spread of false knowledge, which can have detrimental effects. By staying informed and questioning dubious claims, we can combat ignorance and promote responsible training practices. Ignorance is a formidable foe, but with the right knowledge, we can overcome it. Join us as we debunk these myths and advocate for knowledge-based approaches. By listening to our podcast, you can stay informed and help combat the spread of false knowledge in the dog training community. Stay tuned, stay informed, and let’s work together to promote truth and excellence in our field. Episode 298: Fatiguing or warming up the dog
In our latest podcast episode, we eagerly addressed key questions from our listeners about training dogs, particularly focusing on the importance of ‘warming’ when transitioning from indoor to outdoor environments. Our listeners are curious about how to maintain a strong connection with their dogs amidst a swag of new outdoor stimuli, and we were excited to delve into these challenges. Firstly, warming your dog for a training session isn’t just about tiring them out; it’s about mentally preparing them for the shift in context from a calm indoor setting to a stimulating outdoor space. We emphasized starting with familiar commands like ‘sit’ and ‘look at me’ to help redirect your dog’s focus from distractions back to you. This approach not only primes them for learning but also reinforces your bond. Furthermore, we discussed the value of a physical warm-up. A brisk walk or a playful fetch session can significantly reduce excess energy, thus improving your dog’s concentration. These activities should be seen not just as exercise, but as integral parts of your training routine that prepare your dog for the mental challenges ahead. Ultimately, our discussion aimed to provide practical tips for our listeners, showing that with the right warming techniques, transitioning from indoor to outdoor training can be a smooth, effective process. Tune in to learn how these strategies can enhance your training sessions and deepen the connection with your dog. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 297: Suppression, guessing and perception in dog training
We delved into the fascinating world of dog training, focusing on the suppression of behaviours, the concept of dogs “guessing” behaviours, and the powerful dynamics of perception between teacher and student. This discussion sheds light on how understanding and managing these elements can significantly enhance the training process and the relationship between dogs and their trainers. Suppression of unwanted behaviours is a critical aspect of dog training. It involves identifying behaviours that may be problematic or dangerous and using effective training methods to reduce or eliminate them. However, it’s important to approach suppression with a strategy that promotes an understanding, rather than just punishment. This method not only fosters a safer environment but also strengthens the bond between the dog and the trainer. Furthermore, the idea that dogs may “guess” behaviours highlights the need for clear and consistent communication during training sessions. Dogs often try to anticipate commands and may end up performing the wrong actions. Trainers must be patient and persistent in guiding their canine students, helping them to learn and respond appropriately without confusion. The power of perception in the relationship between teacher and student cannot be overstated. The way a trainer perceives a dog’s behaviour and the dog’s perception of the trainer’s intentions both play crucial roles in the effectiveness of training. Understanding and adapting to each other’s signals and behaviours can lead to more successful outcomes and a more harmonious relationship. Episode 296: Dogs in the house and remote trainers
In our newest podcast episode, we explore the integration of working dogs into households and address the misleading advice suggesting that these dogs disrupt home dynamics. Despite these myths, working dogs can enhance home life, especially when combined with the right remote training techniques. These methods, often misunderstood, can actually strengthen your bond with your working dog rather than hinder it.. A significant portion of our discussion also focuses on the controversial use of electric collars or remote trainers. This often brings to mind images of harsh control methods. However, our conversation sheds light on the lack of scientific evidence supporting the notion that these tools are inherently cruel. It’s crucial for dog owners to consider both the potential benefits and the proper usage of remote training devices to ensure they are used ethically and effectively. Furthermore, we explore a rather peculiar behaviour—dogs eating their own faeces. While this may seem alarming to many pet owners, we provide insights into why this happens and how it can be managed. Understanding the root causes can help owners address this behaviour more sympathetically. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 295: Reward placement and the importance of play
In our latest podcast episode, we dove into the fascinating world of canine behaviour, focusing on the concept of ‘play’ and its multifaceted role in the lives of our dog. Addressing two insightful listener requests, we explored the intricacies of reward placement and the nuanced differences between direct and indirect rewards, shedding light on how these elements can enhance the play experience and training efficacy for both working dogs and pets. Further, we delved into the vital importance of play, not just as a leisure activity, but as a cornerstone of healthy development and emotional well-being for dogs. The discussion illuminated the stark contrasts between working dogs, who often engage in play as a form of job-related training, and pet dogs, whose playtime is more centred around bonding and recreational activities. Understanding the role of play in a dog’s life is crucial for pet owners and trainers alike, offering insights into how play can be used as a tool for learning, bonding, and maintaining physical and mental health. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of their canine companions and make the most of their playtime together. Episode 294: Why Handlers And Dog Trainers Switch Drives
In the latest episode, we delve into the fascinating world of dog training, emphasising the pivotal role of understanding and harnessing different drives. Training dogs, whether for sporting events, police work, or simply as pets, requires a nuanced approach that recognises and adapts to the diverse motivations that drive canine behaviour. Drives in dogs refer to innate impulses that guide their actions; these can include prey drive, play drive, defensive drive, and pack drive, among others. Recognising which drive is dominant in a particular situation allows trainers to employ specific strategies that resonate with the dog’s natural inclinations, leading to more effective and harmonious training sessions. Switching drives is a crucial technique in this field, offering the flexibility to navigate between different motivations to achieve desired behaviours. For instance, transitioning from a prey drive to a play drive can help in teaching control and cooperation, essential in disciplines ranging from agility courses to obedience in high-stress environments. This episode explores these concepts in depth, providing insights and practical advice for trainers and dog owners alike. Understanding drives not only enhances training efficiency but also fosters a deeper bond between dogs and their handlers, making it an indispensable skill in the world of canine training. Episode 293: how to destroy a small family business
In our recent podcast, we explored the challenging situation encountered by LickiMat, a small, pet-friendly business, embroiled in a digital controversy. This enterprise, renowned for its pet care innovations, unexpectedly became the target of online backlash due to its collaboration with a balanced dog trainer at the prestigious Crufts event. This incident highlights the volatile nature of online communities and the swift impact of digital activism on businesses, particularly those in the pet industry. The backlash against LickiMat was sparked by their decision to include a balanced dog trainer at their Crufts stand. While this decision was intended to demonstrate their commitment to pet welfare, it inadvertently led to significant online uproar. This reaction underscores the powerful influence of digital platforms in amplifying collective actions, especially when driven by emotional responses rather than informed discussions. Furthermore, the incident with LickiMat serves as a stark reminder of the ‘cancel culture’ phenomenon prevalent in today’s digital age. This trend, where groups swiftly mobilise to boycott or condemn businesses or individuals, can have disproportionate effects, particularly on small enterprises. In the case of LickiMat, the intense scrutiny and criticism were not only overwhelming but also diverged from the principles of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding. As businesses navigate the complex digital landscape, the LickiMat episode offers valuable lessons. It underscores the necessity for companies, especially in the pet sector, to exercise caution and strategic foresight in their digital engagements. Moreover, it highlights the importance of fostering open, respectful dialogues and prioritising empathy and transparency in all online interactions. In doing so, businesses can better manage and mitigate the risks associated with digital backlash, ensuring a more resilient and positive online presence. Support Lickimat by buying a product and letting the company know that the bullies who are holding a gun to their heads don’t always get their way. https://lickimat.com/ Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 292: A trained dog versus a dog in training
In an engaging segment of our podcast, Pat and Glenn delved into a thought-provoking topic prompted by a simple yet profound question from Pat’s son, Rip. Rip had observed Remi, their family dog, being prepared for a dog trial and pondered, “If Remi is already trained, why does he still need training?” This query sparked an insightful discussion about the ongoing nature of canine training, highlighting the distinction between a dog “in training” and a “trained dog.” Pat began by clarifying that a dog’s training is never truly complete; it’s an evolving process. He emphasised that a “trained dog” isn’t a static state but a continuous commitment to learning and adaptation. “Just as humans never stop learning, a trained dog, too, is always building on existing skills and acquiring new ones,” Pat explained. Thus, the concept of a trained dog involves regular practice and reinforcement to maintain and enhance their abilities. Glenn further elaborated on using references to movies, guitars and random other gibberish to basic acknowledge the direction the conversation was already heading in. The both highlighted the importance of understanding each dog’s unique personality and learning curve in the training process. They agreed that training a dog is as much about building a deep, communicative bond as it is about obedience and skills. Episode 290: Turds always find their way to the sewer
In our latest podcast episode, an off-the-cuff remark during the closing segment sparked an unexpected yet profound discussion. The phrase, casually mentioned, was not the main focus of our conversation but we find way to make interesting headings. l A blog by Larry Krohn a week back led us to explore the contrasting approaches between sport dog trainers and pet owners when faced with challenges. This casual comment prompted us to delve into how individuals find motivation and resilience in the face of adversity. Sport dog trainers, for instance, often find a way to push through obstacles, such as inclement weather, demonstrating a remarkable level of commitment. Their ability to find consistency in training, regardless of external factors, showcases the importance of perseverance in achieving goals. Conversely, pet owners might find valid reasons to adjust their training schedules when faced with similar challenges. This flexibility in approach highlights a different kind of resilience, where one finds balance between commitment and adaptability. The discussion allowed us to find valuable insights into how the mindset we adopt in response to challenges can significantly impact our journey, not just in dog training but in various aspects of life. It’s a reminder that sometimes, it’s the unexpected comments that find a way to resonate with us, offering new perspectives and understanding. Episode 289: The Hidden Trauma of Dog Bites
Being bitten by a dog can be an unexpectedly traumatic experience, leaving both physical and emotional scars. In workplaces, hobbies, and professions where interaction with dogs is common, understanding the risks and preventive measures is crucial. The trauma of a dog bite extends beyond the immediate physical injury. Victims often experience heightened anxiety, fear of dogs, and even PTSD, affecting their ability to work or engage in activities they once enjoyed. The psychological impact can be profound, altering one’s sense of safety and well-being. To mitigate these risks, implementing comprehensive strategies in environments where dogs are present is essential. This includes strict adherence to safety protocols, understanding dog behavior, and recognizing warning signs before an incident occurs. Staff training plays a pivotal role in prevention. Educating employees on safe dog handling techniques can drastically reduce the likelihood of bites. Training should cover understanding dog body language, maintaining a calm and assertive demeanor, and knowing how to approach and interact with dogs safely. Moreover, first aid training is indispensable. Quick and appropriate responses to a bite can prevent severe infections and promote faster healing, reducing the long-term impact of the injury. Episode 287: Better at polishing a turd
In a recent episode of The Canine Paradigm, we were thrilled to have Tracy Racich join us for an enlightening discussion. This episode, intriguingly titled “Better at Polishing a Turd,” stems from a candid comment made by Tracy. The conversation was sparked by a post Tracy shared about a month ago, which caught our attention and led us to delve deeper into the subject on our show. The focus of our discussion with Tracy was on the current state of dog training, highlighting both the commendable aspects and the areas that require improvement. Tracy’s insights are particularly valuable for newer trainers entering the industry, offering them guidance on how to navigate the complexities of dog training effectively. One of the key points Tracy emphasised was the importance of not just “polishing” our skills but also recognising and addressing the underlying issues in dog training practices. This metaphor of “polishing a turd” serves as a powerful reminder that superficial improvements are not enough; we must strive for genuine progress and development in our training methodologies. For those new to the field, understanding the balance between polishing existing techniques and innovating new approaches is crucial. Tracy’s perspective sheds light on the need for continuous learning and adaptation in dog training, ensuring that we provide the best possible guidance and support to the dogs in our care. As we reflect on our conversation with Tracy, it’s clear that the path to becoming a better dog trainer involves more than just polishing our skills. It requires a deep commitment to understanding the nuances of canine behaviour and a willingness to embrace change and improvement in our practices. check out other episodes we have done like this one Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 286: Dog training with a single source
In a recent episode, we were joined Matthias Lenz, a distinguished source in the dog training community. His evolution from a simple dog walker to a training director for puppies aiding the visually impaired is remarkably inspiring. Matthias joined us to address a critical issue within the dog training community: the division between the +R (positive reinforcement) and balanced training methodologies. His unique viewpoint highlights the urgent need for unity and understanding in this specialized field. Matthias’s journey serves as a significant source of knowledge about the dog training community’s internal conflicts. He voiced concerns regarding the escalating divide between the +R and balanced training factions. The +R community, proponents of positive reinforcement techniques, often hesitates to recognise the benefits of balanced training methods. Matthias points out that this discord impedes the development of a more holistic and effective dog training approach. Matthias underscores the necessity of open-mindedness within the dog training community. He contends that both +R and balanced trainers possess valuable insights. Nevertheless, the +R community’s reluctance to collaborate with balanced trainers creates a formidable obstacle. This mindset restricts the flow of ideas and techniques that could advantageously serve both dogs and their trainers. Matthias’s advocacy for a unified approach in dog training is a vital step towards fostering a more inclusive and efficient environment. Recognising the strengths of both +R and balanced training methods can lead to the development of more versatile and adaptable training strategies. It’s essential for the dog training community to unite, share knowledge, and strive towards the shared goal of enhancing the lives of dogs Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 285: What do you call the guy who came last at medical school?
In a thought-provoking discussion within our Ethics in Dog Training group, Tracy Racich brought forward an essential topic: the ethical landscape in dog training. Tracy’s insights delve into the varying skill levels of trainers and the ethical responsibilities that accompany them. Tracy raises a critical point about the ethical dilemmas faced by trainers who overestimate their skills. The issue, as noted, isn’t with less experienced trainers working in the field. Instead, it’s when these individuals fail to recognize their limitations. Tracy emphasizes that ethical breaches occur when trainers, regardless of their experience, charge high fees for inconsistent results, often shifting blame onto clients. Another concern highlighted by Tracy is the handling of complex cases by under qualified trainers. Tracy advocates for the importance of recognizing one’s limits and the value of referring challenging cases to more experienced professionals. This approach, Tracy suggests, is not only an ethical practice but also a pathway for professional development. Tracy also underscores the importance of continuous learning in the field of dog training. According to Tracy, acknowledging one’s current skill level and aspiring to improve is key to maintaining ethical standards in the industry. Tracy’s vision is for a community where knowledge sharing and mentorship are encouraged, facilitating the growth of all trainers. Tracy Racich’s contributions to our group discussion serve as a reminder of the importance of ethics in dog training. Recognizing our limitations and committing to ongoing education are crucial steps in upholding the professional integrity that Tracy so rightly advocates. Episode 284: Homeostasis of the brain with Dr Melanie Uhde
In our latest episode, we had the enlightening opportunity to converse with Dr. Melanie Uhde from Canine Decoded, delving into the intricate world of canine behaviour and the pivotal role of the brain in maintaining homeostasis. Dr. Uhde illuminated the often misunderstood realm of punishment and rewards in training, emphasising the brain’s fundamental need for balance and stability. Homeostasis, the brain’s method of maintaining a stable internal environment, is crucial for the overall health and behaviour of dogs. Dr. Uhde explained that disruptions in the brain’s homeostasis can lead to behavioural issues, making understanding this balance essential for effective training and development. The brain constantly seeks equilibrium, and understanding this can significantly alter our approach to training. Dr. Uhde’s insights shed light on how the brain’s quest for homeostasis influences a dog’s response to various training techniques. She stressed that maintaining the brain’s balance not only fosters a healthier learning environment but also promotes a stronger, more trusting bond between the dog and the trainer. By the end of our conversation, it was clear that the brain’s role in behaviour and training is profound. Dr. Uhde’s expertise offered a fresh perspective on the importance of considering the brain’s need for homeostasis in our training approaches, providing relief and guidance to those navigating the complex world of canine behaviour. Episode 282: The rising tide lifts all the boats
As the year draws to a close, we’re excited to present our end-of-year podcast, “The Rising Tide Lifts All the Boats.” This episode is not just a reflection on the past year but a heartfelt message of gratitude and inspiration. We’ve seen that when we focus on self-improvement and foster kindness, just like boats in a rising tide, we all lift together. Throughout this year, our community of listeners has been the wind in our sails, guiding us through both calm and turbulent waters. Your support has been a beacon of encouragement, and for that, we extend a warm, heartfelt thank you. As we discuss in this special episode, the metaphor of boats rising together encapsulates our vision for a world where bettering oneself inherently betters others. It’s about moving away from self-sabotage and the sabotage of others, and instead, steering towards a horizon of collective upliftment. This Christmas, as we reflect on the year gone by and anticipate the new one, let’s continue to be the tide that raises all boats. Let’s commit to being kinder, to pushing ourselves and each other towards greatness, and to creating a community where everyone rises together. Here’s to a new year of lifting each other up, just as boats rise together on a rising tide. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Episode 280: Designing the path of a new dog trainer
Embarking on the journey to become a dog trainer is both exhilarating and demanding. It’s a path that requires dedication, patience, and a deep understanding of canine behaviour. For those starting from scratch, the road to becoming a proficient trainer and eventually leading seminars and teaching solo is filled with learning and growth. Initially, the focus should be on foundational knowledge. This includes understanding dog psychology, behaviour, and learning theory. Aspiring trainers should immerse themselves in books, online courses, and workshops to build a solid theoretical base. Simultaneously, hands-on experience is crucial. Volunteering at shelters or working under experienced trainers provides invaluable practical insights and skills. As competence grows, the next phase involves specialisation. Whether it’s obedience training, agility, or behaviour modification, finding a niche not only enhances expertise but also sets a trainer apart. During this stage, it’s beneficial to attain certifications from recognised dog training organisations, which lend credibility and confidence. The transition to teaching and conducting seminars should be gradual. Initially, co-teaching with seasoned professionals can bridge the gap between learning and leading. This phase is crucial for developing teaching methodologies and understanding group dynamics. The hallmark of readiness to stand alone as a trainer and educator is a blend of confidence, experience, and continuous learning. It’s not just about years in the field, but the depth of understanding and the ability to effectively communicate and empathise with both dogs and their owners. When a trainer feels confident in their skills and starts receiving positive feedback from clients and peers, it’s a strong indicator that they’re ready to take the lead. Episode 279: Appreciation for safe decoys and dog trainers
Decoys, in particular, are the unsung heroes in sports like, PSA, Schutzhund, French Ring, or Mondioring, where they engage dogs in exercises that could potentially lead to injury. These skilled individuals don’t just wear a bite suit and endure the physicality of a dog’s engagement; they are artists of canine communication, understanding the subtle language of dogs to a degree that allows them to anticipate and react in ways that protect both the animal and themselves, ensuring a safe training experience. Their role is not merely about being a target; it’s about being a partner in the dog’s safe training journey. They help in honing a dog’s skills, ensuring that the dog’s natural drives are channelled in a safe and constructive manner. This requires a deep understanding of canine behaviour, impeccable timing, and a profound respect for the animals they work with, all contributing to a safe training environment. Trainers, on the other hand, are the strategists behind this intricate dance, with a focus on safety. Their knowledge in animal behaviour, training methodologies, and injury prevention is critical. They design training programs that challenge the dogs yet keep them within the bounds of safety. Their ability to read a dog’s physical and mental limits is essential in maintaining a safe training regime and preventing overtraining and stress, which can lead to injuries. Together, decoys and trainers create a synergy that allows our dogs to engage in these sports with vigour and enthusiasm, while significantly reducing the risk of harm. Their skill and knowledge are the bedrock upon which the safety of our beloved canine athletes rests. As we cheer for the impressive performances of our dogs, let’s also take a moment to appreciate these dedicated professionals who make it all possible, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved. Episode 278: The power and love of a community dog
In the heart of our communities, dogs hold a special place, not just as pets but as embodiments of love and connection. This was profoundly evident in the story of Kim Grace, owner of Grey Gums Cafe on Putty Road, and her beloved rescue dog, Shilo. Shilo was more than a pet to Kim; he was a symbol of enduring love and companionship. After the passing of her husband, John, Shilo came into Kim’s life, offering comfort and a sense of presence that was deeply needed. Named after the Neil Diamond song “Shilo,” a favorite of John’s and poignantly played at his service, this dog represented a bridge between past memories and present healing. The impact of Shilo on Kim, and by extension on the community that frequents Grey Gums Cafe, was profound. Dogs, like Shilo, have an innate ability to bring people together, offering unconditional love and a listening ear, without judgement or expectation. They become part of our stories, our families, and our hearts. Sadly, Kim recently faced the loss of Shilo, a moment that reminds us of the precious, albeit sometimes brief, time we have with these remarkable creatures. Shilo’s legacy, however, continues. It’s in the way the community rallies in support, in the shared stories over coffee, and in the understanding that love, like Shilo’s, leaves an indelible mark. As we remember Shilo, let’s celebrate the power and love that community dogs bring into our lives. They are not just pets; they are friends, healers, and irreplaceable companions on our life’s journey. Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 276: Psychology assisted by canines part 2
Samantha King, a dog trainer and psychologist at Therapy Dogs Australia, challenges industry norms by advocating for a practical, role-specific approach to working dog training, contrasting with the generalised recommendations often made by her industry member organisation. Working dogs play crucial roles, such as in search and rescue, police work, or providing assistance to individuals with disabilities. These tasks require a unique blend of intelligence, physical abilities, and sensitivity. The bond between dog and handler is integral to the success of the mission. However, a one-size-fits-all training approach is inadequate. Customised training programmes are crucial for maximising the dog’s potential and effectiveness in its role. Samantha’s work aims to highlight the need for a more realistic and practical training approach. Samantha’s frustration stems from the industry member body’s failure to recognise the unique challenges and requirements of each specific role that working dogs are placed in. Their lack of flexibility and adaptability in their recommendations can hinder the dog’s performance and, ultimately, the success of the mission. As we continue to explore innovative approaches in the field of working dogs, it’s evident that customised and realistic training programmes are vital. Working dogs have the potential to make a significant impact in various professional settings, but this is only possible if we allow them the opportunity to reach their full potential through the right training and support. Episode 275: Psychology assisted by canines part 1
When we think of psychology, often we imagine a traditional therapy session in an office setting. However, Samantha King, a psychologist from Therapy Dogs Australia, is breaking the mold by incorporating canines into her sessions. This innovative approach, known as psychology assisted by canines, utilizes the unique bond between humans and dogs to facilitate healing and growth, especially in young children with a range of needs. Canines have an extraordinary ability to connect with humans, providing comfort and support that is often unparalleled. In a psychological setting, the presence of a dog can act as a catalyst for building rapport between the psychologist and the child. The non-judgmental and unconditional love offered by canines can create a safe and nurturing environment, promoting openness and vulnerability, which are essential for any successful therapeutic intervention. In psychology, the importance of a strong therapist-client relationship cannot be overstated. Incorporating canines into the session can significantly enhance this relationship, ultimately leading to more effective outcomes. The intuitive nature of dogs allows them to sense emotions and respond accordingly, providing an additional layer of support and understanding that can be truly transformative. Samantha King’s work with Therapy Dogs Australia is a testament to the power and potential of psychology when combined with the healing presence of canines. As we continue to explore and embrace innovative approaches in psychology, the possibilities for healing and growth are boundless. Episode 274: What is prey locking in dog behaviour
Prey locking in dogs is a natural instinct deeply rooted in their ancestral heritage as hunters. When a dog locks onto an object, it means they’ve spotted something of interest, whether it’s a squirrel, a ball, or even a moving vehicle. This behaviour is characterised by intense focus and a stiffened posture. However, it can be a source of frustration for both owners and trainers alike. Owners may find prey locking frustrating for several reasons. Firstly, it can make walking your dog a challenge as they might suddenly fixate on a target, leading to tugging and pulling on the lead. This not only causes discomfort for the owner but also poses a danger if the dog lunges towards traffic or other hazards. Additionally, redirecting a locked-in dog’s attention can be quite challenging, especially if they are determined to chase their prey. Trainers, too, encounter difficulties when addressing prey locking. Teaching a dog to break their focus and respond to commands in such a heightened state of arousal can be time-consuming and demanding. It necessitates patience, consistent training, and the use of various techniques to redirect their attention towards more desirable behaviours. To better manage this instinctual response, it’s important to understand that prey locking is a natural canine behaviour. Employing training methods that encourage impulse control and redirection can be highly beneficial for both owners and trainers, enabling dogs to enjoy their environment without causing frustration or safety concerns. Episode 273: Transcending Jealousy in people and dogs
Jealousy and envy, often used interchangeably, have distinct meanings. Jealousy is the fear of losing something we possess to someone else, while envy involves desiring something someone else has. Both emotions aren’t limited to just humans. Our canine companions, too, show signs that could be interpreted as jealousy. For humans, jealousy can arise from intricate emotional scenarios, such as witnessing a loved one grow closer to someone else or professional setbacks. In dogs, the manifestations are more direct: a pet owner showering affection on another pet often leads to those unmistakable whines and nudges. However, it’s worth delving deeper into canine “jealousy.” Research from the University of California, San Diego, indicates that dogs might display behaviors reminiscent of jealousy when they perceive unequal treatment. Dogs, when observing their owners being affectionate toward what seemed like another pet (though it was a stuffed toy), exhibited nudges and pushes, more so than when the owner engaged with a non-social item. Yet, an alternative perspective suggests that what we label as “jealousy” in dogs might be closer to “resource guarding.” Dogs, having evolved as pack animals, naturally protect scarce resources. This protective behaviour over toys, food, or even their human, could stem from a primal instinct to guard essential resources rather than from an emotional response akin to human jealousy. Humans often anthropomorphise animal behaviours, and while it might feel right to label a dog’s desire for attention as “jealousy,” it could just be a straightforward request for affection or the act of guarding a “resource.” The dynamics between cerebral human emotions and the possibly instinctual responses of dogs is fascinating. As our discussion ranged from cultural interpretations to light-hearted anecdotes and even the portrayal of jealousy in art, one clear takeaway emerged: understanding and appropriately addressing these emotions and behaviours, whether in humans or dogs, is essential for nurturing harmonious relationships. Episode 272: How breed battles will change dog training
From the bustling streets of the UK to the vast expanses of Australia, a storm is brewing that threatens to redefine the very core of dog training. XL Bullies, once pridefully paraded across parks in Britain, now face potential bans. Meanwhile, Down Under, Rottweilers, despite their loyal and loving nature, find themselves splashed across headlines, painting them in a less than flattering light. Why this sudden breed-specific attention? But, the plot thickens. The Australian Parliament, under the influence of left-wing political parties, is alight with fervent debates that extend beyond breed biases. They are launching yet another campaign against specific dog training tools, seeking to ban bite sports and aiming to introduce even more stringent restrictions on canine training methodologies. These actions aren’t just administrative red tape; they are tugs at the very heartstrings of dog lovers and trainers. Every ban, every headline, and every parliamentary debate forces us to re-evaluate and adapt our approach. But at what cost? As we navigate these turbulent times, the overarching question remains: How will these breed battles and political pressures reshape the landscape of dog training, and more importantly, our relationship with our furry friends? Episode 271: More things dog trainers hate to hear
After the rousing discussion sparked by our previous episode, “Things Dog Trainers Hate to Hear,” it’s clear that the conversation between pet owners and dog trainers is far more nuanced than can be captured by a list of frustrating phrases. The topic was so well-received that we decided to take it a step further in our newest podcast episode, where we delve into how the dynamic between pet owners and trainers is evolving in contemporary society. Social media platforms, with their host of cute dog videos and quick ‘tips and tricks,’ can both help and hinder the pet owner-trainer relationship. On the one hand, they serve as platforms for trainers to share valuable insights and for pet owners to learn and share. On the other, they can perpetuate harmful myths and encourage unprofessional training techniques, creating a host of challenges for certified trainers to untangle later on. As we’ve discussed in our latest podcast episode, the relationship between pet owners and dog trainers is constantly evolving. Through this evolution, it’s important to go beyond debunking frustrating phrases or myths and instead focus on the new ways that training methods and pet owner expectations are adapting to the changing landscape. Through understanding these shifts, we can better facilitate a rewarding experience for both dogs and their humans. Episode 270: Things dog trainers hate to hear
A recent Facebook post ignited a fascinating discussion around the relationship between pet owners and dog trainers. The user asked friends to share things that dog trainers hate to hear. Not surprisingly, the thread garnered over 200 comments, full of humour and earnest concerns alike. We found the conversation so compelling that we even discussed it in our most recent podcast episode. Initially, one phrase that dog trainers often hate to hear is, “I’ve tried everything.” This comment perpetuates a myth that undermines the essence of dog training. Experts in the field hate hearing this because it not only misguides pet owners into believing there’s no answers. Secondly, a sentiment that dog trainers equally hate is, “Isn’t he too old to be trained?” This notion incorrectly implies that age is an insurmountable barrier to learning new tricks or behaviours. Dog trainers hate this misconception because it leads many pet owners to miss out on an opportunity for improvement, which is often entirely possible regardless of a dog’s age. Furthermore, on the lighter side of things, a phrase that dog trainers also hate but find amusing is, “My dog doesn’t need training; he’s just ‘free-spirited’.” While this comment elicits chuckles, dog trainers hate that it minimizes the value of their work. A ‘free-spirited’ dog might seem cute, but lack of training can compromise both the dog’s and owner’s well-being. In conclusion, the thread wasn’t just a source of entertainment; it was a treasure trove of insights into the myths and stereotypes that dog trainers hate encountering. These professionals aren’t merely ‘canine whisperers’; they serve as vital educators who strive to improve the relationship between humans and their pets. Episode 269: Being in the moment
Undoubtedly, the very essence of dog training is encapsulated in a single, albeit often elusive, concept: the moment. Interestingly, this pivotal lesson came into sharp focus for many of us while sharing space with the incomparable Michael Ellis. A master in his field, Michael exemplifies the art of being fully “in the moment.” When you find yourself fortunate enough to be immersed in his dynamic presence, you can’t help but feel the magnetic allure of present awareness. Importantly, this is not merely a tactical approach, but rather, it evolves into a deeply-lived philosophy. Further emphasising this, being fully present transcends being just a training technique; it emerges as a transformative dogma that enriches the lives of dogs, trainers, and clients alike. During training sessions with Michael, you quickly observes a crucial distinction: he’s not simply instructing the human or the dog. Instead, he is communicating, connecting, and deeply understanding on an impressively intuitive level. This potent engagement with the present moment empowers him to discern even the most subtle cues in a dog’s behaviour. Having the week with Michael and our good friend Alex Edwards has been an incredible moment which way beyond us has been grateful for. Episode 268: The when, why and how of sorting life out
Sorting through life’s chaos is akin to training an unpredictable dog; both require mastery over the when, why, and how. When: Just as we sort our life decisions at opportune moments, we must also discern when to guide our dogs. Proper timing in both ensures success. Why: Understanding our motivations and those of our dogs is key. Is your dog’s barking due to anxiety, boredom, or health? Similarly, sorting the reasons behind our feelings adds depth to our growth. How: Our strategies in life, like in dog training, need personalisation. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always work. In essence, sorting our way through life and dog training is more than exerting control. It’s about mutual growth, understanding, and patience. Our dogs serve not just as pets but as teachers, urging us to be present, adaptable, and curious. Check out this episode where we asked, ‘Where are we going‘? Episode 267: The downfall of the rigid system
Glenn, Pat, and Cameron Ford came together to take a hard look at the existing ‘system’ that governs many dog training practices. This meeting ignited an important discussion, probing into long-standing practices that have become ubiquitous within the industry. We raised concerns over the rigid thinking that is prevalent in the field. This often manifests as a cult-like dedication to a single methodology, stunting the growth of new ideas and innovation. Our conversation highlighted how this narrow-minded approach creates an environment where trainers aggressively defend their chosen ‘system’, often to the detriment of their professional development. In an act akin to religious fervour, these individuals quickly reject or even openly attack novel ideas and methodologies. Such behaviour creates an unfriendly atmosphere that prevents the adoption of emerging research and innovative techniques that could potentially revolutionize dog training practices. Against this backdrop, we proposed a solution rooted in openness and flexibility. Rather than clinging tightly to one specific approach, we suggest trainers should continually seek knowledge from a wide array of methods. By promoting a culture of open dialogue and intellectual curiosity, we believe an efficient, multifaceted ‘system’ could emerge in dog training. Furthermore, we emphasised the need to challenge and reassess the industry’s deeply entrenched beliefs. They argued that a ‘system’ should be adaptable and dynamic, capable of evolving with new discoveries in animal behaviour and learning. For the field to truly progress, we all stressed the importance of breaking free from the rigid constraints of some existing methods to embrace a more holistic understanding of dog training. Episode 266: Pressure motivates release educates
Dog training is a blend of art and science, utilising various techniques to shape desired behaviours. One such method is negative reinforcement, encapsulated nicely in the phrase, “pressure motivates, release educates.” Negative reinforcement is often misunderstood. It doesn’t involve harm or punishment but utilises slight discomfort to stimulate behaviour change. In dog training, ‘pressure’ refers to the minimal discomfort that motivates the dog to behave differently. This could be a firm tug on the lead or a stern voice command, encouraging the dog to respond to a certain cue. The ‘release’ part, equally crucial, involves removing the ‘pressure’ as soon as the dog exhibits the desired behaviour. The release is where the true learning occurs. It’s the dog’s ‘Aha!’ moment, realising that complying with the command will eliminate the discomfort. This ebb and flow of pressure and release helps form associations and adjust behaviours, proving to be a powerful tool in any dog trainer’s arsenal. In essence, the ‘pressure motivates, release educates’ mantra underscores the art of teaching dogs using negative reinforcement. It’s about fostering a learning environment that drives behavioural change, proving that even pressure, when properly applied, can result in a well-trained, happier dog. check out another episode we did on incompatible behaviour and positive punishment Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm? Episode 265: The making of a new decoy
Nothing beats a hearty chat with Jason Firmin, the main man at Eizweck Dogquip, and his son Ryan, especially after their whirlwind European tour. Now, this wasn’t your typical sightseeing trip. Nope, the Firmins had a mission – to immerse Ryan into the exciting world of dog sports decoy. Europe’s got some seriously talented decoys, and it was in this lively backdrop that Ryan received his crash course. Jason couldn’t stop beaming as he spoke of his son’s meteoric rise in the decoy scene. Ryan was all grins, too, as he regaled us with tales of training alongside Europe’s decoy cream of the crop. His eyes sparkled as he recounted his ‘unparalleled’ experience, a real game-changer for his decoy journey. Now, we’re a cheeky lot, so the chat wasn’t all shop talk. We found time for a bit of a laugh, ribbing each other and adding a dash of fun to our dog sports discourse. Let’s just say, we know how to balance the serious with the downright silly! Their European sojourn has undoubtedly injected a fresh dose of enthusiasm for dog sports and decoy in particular. The Firmins’ story is a delightful reminder of how a spirited approach to learning (and a pinch of mischief) can create unforgettable experiences. Here’s to more decoy escapades with Ryan on the frontline! we’ve had other episode about decoys here in Episode 197 Further details looking for great dog trainers and supporters of the canine paradigm?
