“Punished by Rewards” by Alfie Kohn delves into the concept of intrinsic motivation, suggesting that rewards can actually be counter-productive, undermining our inherent drive to learn and explore. While primarily focused on humans, this compelling theory has implications for dog training. Traditionally, reward-based training has been a staple in teaching our canine companions. But should we be wary of over-relying on treats and praise? This question leads us back to the concept of intrinsic motivation. It’s undeniable that dogs possess inherent drives, such as the drive to explore their environment or to play. These intrinsic drives can and should be harnessed in training. Shifting our focus to nurturing these natural instincts, rather than overwhelming our dogs with extrinsic rewards, could result in a more engaging and satisfying learning experience. This approach encourages dogs to participate not just for the promise of a treat but due to an intrinsic desire to engage, learn, and please. “Punished by Rewards” nudges us to reconsider the balance between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation in dog training. By placing emphasis on the latter, we can tap into our dogs’ natural instincts, leading to more effective and enriching training outcomes. Dog training is a journey, underscored by significant transitions through distinct learning phases, each showcasing your dog’s growth and understanding. Initially, in the Introduction and teaching phase, your dog doesn’t understand the expected behaviour. However, as they begin to recognise the task or command, they naturally transition into the Learning and Association phase. This shift becomes noticeable as your dog starts associating your command with the corresponding action, albeit inconsistently. For example, when you say “sit,” they might occasionally comply. Gradually, your dog moves into the Refinement and Consistency stage, which is another crucial transition. Here, your dog’s understanding deepens, characterised by improved accuracy and more consistent responses. Now, when you say “sit,” they will more frequently and correctly respond to your command, indicating a clear grasp of the association between the command and the action. Finally, the most rewarding transition occurs, leading your dog into the Proofing phase. At this point, your dog instinctively responds to your command, indicating that it has become second nature. When you say “sit,” they immediately and correctly respond, regardless of the environment or distractions, signalling a successful transition to mastery. These transitions form the crux of dog training. Your patience, understanding, and consistent reinforcement will guide these transitions, facilitating your dog’s progression from one phase to the next. Recognising and appreciating these subtle shifts can significantly enhance your effectiveness as a trainer and deepen the bond with your dog. Have you ever talked to your pets as if they were human beings? If you have, you might have been accused of being anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviours to non-human entities such as animals, objects, or even natural phenomena. Recently, Pat asked Glenn if he was being anthropomorphic when he was observing behaviours from his dogs, Remco and Valerie. While dogs do feel emotions like joy and fear, they might not necessarily express them in the same way as humans. Dogs might wag their tails when they’re happy, but they might also wag their tails when they’re nervous or excited. It’s important to understand and respect the way that animals communicate. However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t talk to our pets or treat them with kindness and respect. Building a strong bond with our pets requires communication and empathy. It’s important to observe and understand their behaviours and needs, and to respond to them appropriately. When it comes to dogs participating in bite sports, developing their grip strength and technique is a crucial aspect of their training. Proper grip development through good techniques in tug and rag work can help improve a dog’s performance, prevent injuries, and increase their confidence and drive. In bite sports, such as PSA, Schutzhund, IPO, and French Ring, dogs are trained to bite and hold onto various objects, including sleeves, bite suits, and hidden sleeves. To prepare them for these tasks, trainers use tug and rag work to help develop their grip strength, proper bite technique, and overall confidence. It’s important to use appropriate equipment when engaging in tug and rag work with a dog training for bite sports. Specifically designed bite tugs and rag toys that mimic the texture and feel of the equipment used in bite sports should be used. This helps the dog learn how to properly grip and hold onto the equipment, while also protecting their teeth from damage. Proper technique during tug and rag work is also essential for developing a dog’s grip strength and technique. Trainers should let the dog win and avoid forcefully taking the toy away, as this can create negative associations with biting and decrease the dog’s drive. Varying the types of games and toys used in training can also help develop a well-rounded grip. we had the pleasure of hosting Luke and Panos from the “Life with Your Dog” podcast. They joined us to discuss Joel Turner’s open and closed loop training system, as well as other dog training philosophies. The conversation was both insightful and engaging. Dog owners often unwittingly trigger certain behaviours in their pets, without realising the implications of their actions. While the owners may not understand what they did, the dog’s perception of the situation is entirely different. Due to the data it has collected, the dog’s brain sees this as a cue to run a particular program. This phenomenon is not uncommon, and it’s a result of a dog’s ability to learn and adapt to its environment. Dogs are highly intelligent animals, and they have an exceptional sense of awareness, which they use to process the data they receive from their surroundings. This data includes everything from sounds and smells to body language and subtle cues from their owners. Dog owners who don’t understand this can unwittingly trigger certain behaviours in their pets. For example, a dog may learn to associate a particular sound with a particular behaviour. Suppose an owner regularly uses a specific sound or word when it’s time to eat. In that case, the dog may start to associate that sound with food and run to the kitchen, anticipating its next meal. In both cases, the dog has learned to run a specific program based on the data it has received from its environment. However, the owner may not even be aware of the cues they are giving their pet. This lack of understanding can lead to frustration on both sides, with the owner wondering why their dog behaves in a certain way and the dog feeling confused and uncertain. To avoid this problem, it’s essential for dog owners to understand how their actions and cues can influence their pet’s behaviour. As much as we all love our canine companions, sometimes behavioural issues arise that can make life with them difficult and even dangerous. In some cases, these issues can be so severe that they pose a threat to not only the safety of others but to the dog itself. In such situations, the difficult decision to consider euthanasia may arise. It’s important to note that behavioural euthanasia should always be a last resort, and only considered after all other options have been exhausted. This includes seeking the help of a professional dog trainer or behaviourist, and exploring any potential medical issues that may be contributing to the dog’s behaviour. However, in some cases, the risks associated with a dog’s behaviour may simply be too great to manage safely, and euthanasia may be the most humane option. For many dog owners, the decision to euthanize a beloved pet is a heart-wrenching one. It can be particularly traumatic when the decision is based on behavioural issues rather than physical health problems. Owners may feel a sense of guilt, grief, and loss, and may struggle to come to terms with the decision. It’s important for owners to seek support during this difficult time. This may include talking to a trusted friend or family member, seeking the help of a therapist or counsellor, or joining a support group for pet owners who have gone through similar experiences. It’s also important to remember that the decision to euthanize a dangerous dog is not a reflection of the owner’s love for their pet. In fact, it can be a selfless act of love, made in the best interests of both the dog and the wider community. Ultimately, choosing to euthanasia for a dangerous dog is a deeply personal decision that should be made with careful consideration and the guidance of professionals. Dogs may develop the behaviour of barking to biting when they feel frustrated and their drives are not properly addressed. This behaviour can have various underlying causes, but it is often associated with fear or frustration. For instance, if a dog is barking at a person or another animal and feels unheard or misunderstood, it may resort to biting to communicate its message. Socialising the dog and ensuring it has positive interactions with people and animals can help. Additionally, training the dog to respond to verbal commands and having a solid recall can redirect its attention and prevent it from escalating to biting. Another helpful technique in dog training is premacking behaviour, which was first introduced by psychologist David Premack. Specifically, this technique involves using a high-probability behavior to reinforce a low-probability behaviour. For example, if a dog loves playing fetch but dislikes going for walks, using premacking behaviour can increase its motivation to go for walks. Rewarding it with a game of fetch after a walk can help associate the walk with a positive outcome. Using premacking behaviour correctly in dog training is essential. Firstly, the high-probability behaviour should always be something that the dog finds enjoyable. Additionally, the low-probability behaviour should be something that the dog needs to do to receive the reward. However, when it comes to dog training, it is important to not let your ambitions get mixed up with your capabilities, especially when working with aggressive dogs. Working with aggressive dogs can be a daunting task, but with the right approach and mindset, it is possible to help these dogs overcome their behaviour issues and lead happy and fulfilling lives. However, it is important to set realistic goals and to not let your ambitions cloud your judgement or put yourself or others in danger. One of the most common mistakes that dog trainers make when working with aggressive dogs is to have unrealistic expectations. Aggressive behaviour is not something that can be fixed overnight, and it is important to recognize that progress may be slow and incremental. Pushing the dog too far too fast can be counter-productive and can actually make the aggressive behaviour worse. As a dog trainer, you have a crucial role in helping dogs and their owners resolve behaviour issues. To be successful, it is vital to have answers to life’s questions, particularly when it comes to markers, cues, and primary reinforcer’s. First, you need to understand what the dog’s behaviour problem is. Is the dog aggressive, destructive, or fearful? Once you have identified the problem, you must determine its root cause. This could be lack of exercise, insufficient attention, or a medical condition. With this information, you can create a plan to have answers to the problem. Next, you must choose the right technique to modify the behaviour. Positive reinforcement, counter-conditioning, and behaviour modification are just a few of the methods available. You must understand these techniques and select the one that best fits each situation. It is also crucial to know how to teach the new behaviour. What steps should you take and how will you reinforce the behaviour so it becomes a habit? The answers to these questions will guide you in your training efforts. Markers, cues, and primary reinforcer’s play a significant role in dog training. Markers are signals, such as a clicker or a sound, that signal to the dog that a behaviour is correct. Cues are commands that tell the dog what to do. Primary reinforcer’s, such as food or toys, provide motivation for the dog to perform the desired behaviour. Having answers to life’s questions is essential for dog trainers. During that time, he reveals the strategy that social media algorithms use to encourage more views and longer time spent on the page. Perfection is paralysis when you find yourself unable to take a leap at anything in life until it’s perfect. Real life problems with fictional solutions is how the world is working to solve some of the problems owners are having with dogs. Yes, we ranted in this episode as we can foresee a future that for many dogs was successful, will now not be. People who are upheld in the community are giving fictional advice while contradicting their own practices. Trainers who misquote, mislead and misunderstand tools are continuing to create fictional headlines and beat up other trainers and owners who all see good results and have happy, healthy productive lives. Cherry picked, sympathetic science is no longer a reliable place to seek non bias information when those very people are radical activists and report on their feelings and not observational facts. “Death before discomfort” you squawk! I don’t believe you would choose that hypocritical option yourself. You’ll soon get your wishes now you have taken a reliable tool from the table and suitably mislabelled it to suit your grim narrative. You really don’t understand dogs at all when you appear to believe that training a dog is the same as training a marine mammal. Yes there are comparisons. Yes we have learned many great concepts from marine mammal trainers. However, if you still think it’s the same, then you most certainly don’t understand. Furthermore, what people fail to understand is the implications that training tool bans are going to have on dogs. It’s frightening to know that some people’s ideal world is almost certainly going to be devastating for the dogs they say they care about. Facts don’t care about feelings. Incompatible behaviour & positive punishment is a topic from a quote that we posted on our instagram some months back. The quote was from Dr. Susan Friedman and it says. “The key question is not, how do I stop this problem behaviour? Rather, the question is, what do I want the animal to do instead, then teach it.” It’s a good quote with plenty of merit. There are many who have taken it and have inferred that in order to do this justice, it can only be by way of teaching incompatible behaviours so the dog cannot perform the old behaviour. We feel that incompatible behaviour is certainly a consideration, however it’s limiting by not addressing punishment. In this episode we discussed the ramifications of just this. Lessons from the tantrum came from an actual full scale, first off tantrum that Pat’s second son Axel had. According to Pat, it was of epic proportions and it gave him some perspective on how his dog must feel when he is confused about a situation and doesn’t have the ability to effectively communicate it. Any good educator will always consider the teachable moment, even in an unfavourable moment. Even a child’s tantrum, which most parents would prefer to not have to go through can be an insight into language, behaviour or control. The evils of cherry picking information have been more evident in social media posts where agenda driven lunatics are trying to destroy a target. Politicians are amongst the worst of the cherry pickers, especially around election times. They are also amongst the least trusted people in the world. Cherry pickers are trying to direct the attention of many people onto the focus of one or several people. Setting a dangerous precedent is focussing on how a state Government decided it would announce the banning of certain training tools. The concern here once again, is the complete lack of industry consultation along the way with industry experts or any of the thousands of people who use these tools with enormous benefits. We are joined by Kirsty Reid as she and Brittany Young with assistance from Marcia Davies, have created a on-line petition to demand better representation and consideration from Government decision makers. What is a precedent you may ask? An earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances. So you may not entirely support some of the training tools that are being considered on the banning list but again the precedence from this action will leech into other areas that will have an effect on something you do want or need. The ability to deal with pressure is different for all of us. This was relevant to some more of the listener questions we have been getting in our Facebook discussion group. Some of us deal with pressure really well. We have been conditioned from young children to be extroverted and confident and find many tasks easy to overcome and adapt to. Some of us have not. We may have had inadequate social preparedness or possibly even forms of early abuse, which may prevent us from feeling our best in difficult social encounters and tasks. A never ending love is something that most of us experience with either people or our pets.
