Safety, love and preparedness is another way to think of setting up your life and home to be successful with your new puppy. Puppies always make their way into conversations with dog trainers and so they should. There is such a vast amount of work that needs to be considered with a puppy that a lot of it should begin well and truly before the puppy gets home. The 2021 Circle Jerk is a wrap up of the year that was. To be honest, it can go and fuck itself. We were all booing 2020 and looking forward to 2021 and what did we get for our troubles. More covid, vaccines, boosters, government overreach, no travel, limits, lock downs and masks. The best way to train a dog comes down to a very simple process. It’s subjective! there are so many books, so many youtubes, so many opinions all floating around about the best way to train. It could be dogs, people, gym, cooking, you name it. We have encouraged that when people become absolutest and have a one way, one answer rhetoric, walk the fuck away from them. Good chances they have tasted the fruit of delusion and want you to fall into their cultist way of thinking. When the word punishment is weaponized it can start to conjure up many different thoughts. The problem being that they are majority negative. Almost on a regular basis in these times, we find this to be occurring more frequently. Training advice from vets can often be a controversial topic of heated discussions within the training community. Some vets have been known to give great advice where others have made outrageous claims. Sounds like any other industry really, However, this is the industry that we’re all in as trainers. We rely on our vets to help us through health issues of all variations throughout the life of our pets. Our trusted vets are incredible people that are highly skilled and talented in their field. That field however, often does not include training. Where some vets have gone on to do behaviour and training as an additional skill and can validate their advice, most can not and they shouldn’t. We should have a close and symbiotic relationship with each other and refer to the appropriate profession based on the requirements. While writing this, it is important to note that the veterinarian profession has some of the highest suicide rates out there. Their jobs are highly stressful with some of the highest rates of abuse in any profession. If you have a great vet, promote them and also let them know you appreciate them. it’s nice to know you’re loved and appreciated. Embracing the path of Chaos sounds confronting. In this episode we talk about the types of language you use around your life. How you interact, how you coach, how you live your life. Boyd Hooper is a name that has been mentioned on this Podcast and in many circles around Australia. Boyd was Glenn’s first coach in bite work training, which is where Boyd really made a name for himself from the very early 1990’s up. Many of the freedoms and liberties that we have still been able to enjoy in the Australian dog industry have largely been thanks to Boyd and the other industry Titans that stood in the way. Before many of the known groups reared their heads up to minimise access to training and tool use, Boyd was one who regularly stood fast in opposition and rebutted with prepared science and logical debate. In addition, Boyd was an early pioneer of established training for the Australian Dog community in both customer and trainer education platforms, providing training to many thousands over a 40 year period. The past, the present and the future. It sounds like something from the hauntings of Ebenezer Scrooge as it is reflective of the toils that many, even most of us dable in frequently. This episode started dabbling in the mechanics of shaping and chaining and then went on to complex skills. In the relationship of training and our relationship with our dogs, it’s not uncommon to be time travellers. What we mean by that is, we use the linear scope of time to think of what we would like to do, while remembering what we did and hope because of that we can do better in the moment. The juggling act of the sands of time should mean that we can make the best use of past and future possibilities to direct our present and not confuse the shit out of ourselves or our dogs. The minimum effective dose can be reference to many things. You may look at it and feel that the word, dose would mean medicine or vaccine. Given the turbulent times we are all in and how much news that’s all making it would almost seem like a no brainer. However in this context, the word dose is reflecting on amount. It was something that Pat mentioned during the episode recording which is how I, (Glenn) often come up with a name for each episode. The relationship between the decoy and handler is one that needs to be based in honesty, integrity, vulnerability and compassion. There is so much information both said and unsaid that is bouncing between 3 entities, the decoy, the handler and the dog. Then you have the audience who are watching and taking notes along the way. So what is it that makes this type of dog training such a high level of involvement? A decoy really relies on the attention to detail and instruction from a handler. In return, the handler has to trust and be ready to act on said instructions to ensure that the dog has a good experience and is learning the most accurate and relatable behaviour. This relationship is intense and rapidly changing and evolving which is why there are so many variables all colliding. A trainer without a dog is often a difficult position for some trainers. They may have lost the dog due to some unforeseen circumstance or may not have one at all. A world without tools is an objective to several groups and individuals in the dog training communities. Clearly we’re talking about the training tools that some trainers choose to use during the training process. These are tools recognised as electric or remote training collars, prong collars, correction or choke chains, martinagles, slip leads etc. To certain groups of dog trainers, many of these are the essentials, where some or all of them are selected over the training process and used in ethical educational outcomes. Hobby, Jobby, job is an expression that came from the wise oracle Bart Bellon. It’s his way of describing the transition between a hobby and a job, obviously with the jobby in-between. The wisdom of Dave Kroyer by good fortune is something that has been vastly accessible through his on-line coaching. In this industry, you can really tell a lot about the holistic nature of someone when they have tasted success. Dave Kroyer is a classic example of someone who has been successful and is still very modest and approachable. Calling all protection sports! It’s really time that we started working together and it’s something we have encouraged throughout our podcast. Protection sports are fun, exciting, adrenaline pumping spectacles that scare the knickers right off the feint hearted. Protection sports are also under fire for many of the same reasons. The power of conditioned reflexes is so vast and truly incredible when you understand what you’re seeing. What’s even more amazing is when you understand how to have control over the subjects feelings through a single cue. Having said that, it also highlights the integrity one must undertake to control the reflexes of another. Duran Duran wrote a song called The Reflex in the 1980’s. there a line in the song that says, ‘Every little thing the reflex does, leaves and answer with a question mark’. Rabbits never jumps into wolves mouths is a term the most new decoys will hear. For all intents and purposes it’s true. Rabbits doesn’t jump into the mouth of a predator. It does what most healthy prey will do and it will run its ass off trying to survive. The rabbit reference is usually used when the new decoy tries to throw the tug or sleeve into the dogs mouth. Being a young decoy, I recall one of the experience trainers giving me the rabbit reference. The sentiment made sense and I took it on board, however over the years the concept didn’t exactly stack up. This episode is not only about wolves and rabbits. My partner creates problems are words that most pet dog trainers will hear when they do lessons. You will probably ask them what kind of problems? They will generally tell you they are problems relating to inconsistency. When it gets down to the meat in the sandwich, we generally find out that they manage to keep the dog under control. Then when the partner interacts, they allow unruliness which they feel is counteractive. Not only does this not help the dog, it can also cause further problems in the relationship as one of the couple feels it’s unfair. It’s a difficult position for a trainer to be involved in these problems as you feel like a relationship counsellor and not a dog trainer. Impostor syndrome is one of those horrible nagging doubts that some of occasionally experience. Being in a position of thinking you’re an impostor can be crippling. Thinking that you will fail in front of people and they will find you out can be suffocating. There are so many people in so many professions that go through this torment on a regular basis. The terrible truth is, they are generally incredibly competent. An impostor is someone who is a genuine fraud. They steal identities and work from others and claim it as their own. If you are feeling like an impostor, make sure that you are making time to speak with the right people about correcting this negative phrase. If you are an impostor and you are fraudulent in stealing peoples work and material, it’s time to lift your game. Do something better with your life. Maybe try a healthy dose of authenticity. Slave to genetics is a topic that comes up a lot in trainer conversations when we can’t quite explain our dogs behaviour. There are times when you just have to ask yourself why and it may just come down to genetics after all. However, is genetics always the culprit? Are we quick to allow that to be the excuse? Influencers versus trainers is a more focused look at some of the people influencing in our industry. While there are amazing influencers who give so much amazing advise, there are frauds as well. They focus on a specific industry with a talent in marketing and buzz words while giving awful advise. The same applies to many trainers as we have discussed regularly.
