Episode 63: The Flow state

The flow state is a comfortable state that lies right between boredom and anxiety. We know when we are in a state of flow when we get to the other side with ease. Time felt like it just zoomed on past us. This is not only a dog training lifestyle, it’s a lifestyle. If you can adapt a flow state into you work, you hobby, your workout times and more, you will feel less anxious and more fulfilled. This is why people practice a little bit every day when they want to see improvement and growth. Rather than just cramming and feeling over worked, they focus on easy and enjoyable increments. Just enough to push through barriers but not enough to feel overwhelmed. Every day a little more. just focusing on the objective. Most people who have hobbies understand this state of being as they are doing something they enjoy without the stress. Hopefully you are in flow state with your training. Episode 62: Interviewing Nicky Butler

Nicky Butler is a UK based dog trainer that grabbed ours and many others attention from a social media video. The video message highlighted what many of us have been thinking for quite some time. The nice thing was that Nicky took time to sit for a while and consider the content. The message conveys a simple fact often overlooked. we all love dogs. All of us! However, there’s often controversy about who’s doing it right and the politics hijack the main objectives. We all need to be more thoughtful about this topic. We need to think about how much time is actually worth arguing about it compared to getting on with work. Cherry picked, pseudo science and wounded emotions should never be used as ammunition in any basis. There is a wise saying that suggests that the left wing and the right wing belong to the same bird. Flight is not possible when one is independent of the other. Interviewing Nicky Butler gave us a bit more insight into how people in other countries are feeling. It also describes the ethos of the individuals and the community. Episode 61: Drop you Anchor

Drop your anchor is the title by our adopted show co-host Birdy O’Sheedy. For those of you joining us, Birdy is a clinical psychologist who additionally coaches people on living better with dogs. Birdy has two business’s with the same name but a clever different meaning. Pause in life for her human work and Paws in life for her human / pet work. The title drop your anchor is about teaching us to stand up tall, dig your heels in. Glenn and Pat thought it had a different meaning and in some references it does, but not the one Birdy uses. Anyone having a hard time developing a relationship with their dog would benefit immensely from speaking with Birdy. She has a very pragmatic approach to her work and is constantly looking at improving her own knowledge and understanding. Want to know more about Birdy. Go here Want to know more about Pat. Episode 60: Where are we going?

Where are we going? It’s a good question to ask yourself every now and then to confirm you are planning your direction. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, so it’s important to know these things. Glenn and Pat talk about what we are doing on Patreon and how it is helping to create a future. it’s a future on where we all what The Canine Paradigm to head in. More education, more entertainment, much more laughs. We get a lot of our ideas from you the audience. We listen to your own stories. The troubles you have, the enjoyment in your training, the things you love and the things you loath. So as you can see, it’s important to ask, where are we going? We also discuss our concern around people, fellows trainers not crediting their mentors. They make out that they found their knowledge buried in a field and they are the only ones who know it. Time to question that fool. Episode 59: Start the year with a plan

Start the year with a plan. Start everything with a plan or at least try to. That way you get to do what you need to do by design, rather than just wing it. There’s a saying that says, “plan your work, then work your plan”. Glenn thought it may have been Vince Lombardi, American football super coach and philosopher, however it was Napoleon Hill. There’s even another variation stated by Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister. The episode at large is about people making New Years resolutions. We’re suggesting that it should be a year round resolution by being a little bit better that yesterday. We found that by being incremental and not over doing it, learning takes on a better function overall. Start your 2019 year off by, continuing the good work you did in 2018 and not having too high expectations. So, start your year with a plan and how can you go wrong? Episode 58: End of year circle jerk

End of year circle jerk is a celebration of accomplishments within our show for 2108. We would like to thank everyone who listened, made time for interviews, helped, gave feedback and believed in us. We have both had a phenomenal year, making friend, reaching out, learning about others and networking. The stories and the people we have met on the journey have been surreal to say the least. We cannot thank you enough for taking us into your homes, laughing, crying, learning and celebrating with us. 2018 was a great year and we want to make 2019 even better and we would love your input into how we can make that happen. If there’s a person you think we should interview, let us know. If there’s a topic you think we should discuss, tell us about it. If there’s a fucker in the industry we need to tear apart, drop us a line. Finally, we want to send warm gooey love to our Patreon supporters. You cannot know what your support means to us and how much we appreciate your patronage. We hope you enjoy the End of year circle jerk as much as we did putting it together. Have a safe and Happy New Year everyone. We love you all http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/09/08/episode-42-questions-from-our-audience-part-1/

Episode 57: It’s me isn’t it?

It’s me isn’t it? The words most trainers hear after they have spent a little time working with clients. Yes, it’s you. It’s not a terrible process for clients to come to terms with either. Once your clients accept they have had a major impact on their dogs education, or lack of, we can progress. After all, our job is not to judge or embarrass them. We are there to serve and coach and to improve the overall relationship. When this happens, true language develops and it’s a beautiful thing to behold. No more excuses, minimal problems and manageable dogs who understand you. What you telling them is now clear and they can hear you. If you’re having trouble with your training, reach out to a reputable trainer. Pat can be reached at Operant Canine Glenn can be reached at Canine Evolution Now instead of saying, I’s me isn’t it? I’m the problem. You start to say, I’m the solution. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/06/20/episode-32-the-art-of-communication/ Another good episode in relation to this podacst

Episode 56: Interviewing Michael Ellis

Michael Ellis is a name known very well to many of the people in the dog training community.  If you have been on youtube or Leerburg looking for a trainer series, you would no doubt come across Michael’s work. Both Glenn and Pat have been waiting for some time now to speak with Michael and we had our prayers answered Apart from being an all round great guy, Michael has been teaching students all over the world. If you too would like to train with Michael Ellis or learn more about him, you can find out more here

Episode 55: Positive First

Positive First is a descriptive term Glenn Cooke announced earlier in one of our episodes. He feels better describes what the Balanced dog training community have been trying to represent. Naturally, there are counter arguments that it doesn’t represent the industry based on the correct scientific terms. There was additional points that it could be perceived as to closely associated with positive only. Glenn and Pat start to unpack the success of starting with positive reinforcement and then re assessing. This way if you start positive and can remain within that system of training, there is no problem. If you need to move along to adding aversive, then you can implement the LIMA system. If you have never heard of LIMA, it is the acronym for, Least Invasive Minimally Aversive. it does a very nice job of describing a better selection pathway for training when using the Operant system.

Episode 54: Moments to be proud of

Moments to be proud of was a hard episode for both of us to record. For Pat it was difficult to relive something that caused a lot of raw emotion. For Glenn it was a high degree of shock to hear the story. This story unfolds around a young boy and his mum that Pat helped train an assistance dog. Although it sounds simple enough, it came with some heavy baggage for everyone. The story is still far from finished, however there have been some incredible breakthroughs, both via a mothers love and Pats persistence and compassion. Mental illness is a serious issue that has serious implications requiring the right people for treatment. It also carries a stigma as people don’t know how to behave or what to say. The best thing you can do though is be supportive and not judgemental. Learn more about it and how you can better help. We have done several episode now on mental health and we will definitely do more in the future for both humans and dogs. This is why having a contact like Birdy O’Sheedy is so helpful and healthy as she understand both fields. If you don’t feel great and the world is getting difficult, speak to someone. You’re not a burden. You’re not invalid. You have people that love you and people that do want to be supportive. We would love to hear what you moments to be proud of are too. We have several episode as suggested that would be worth listening to, to support the above. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/11/24/episode-53-a-birdys-eye-view-on-anxiety/

Episode 53: A Birdy’s eye view on Anxiety

A Birdy’s eye view on Anxiety is a welcomed episode to bring back our great friend, Birdy O’Sheedy. If you haven’t listened to an episode with Birdy yet, it’s important to note that she is a practising psychologist. Birdy works in both the human and pet dog realms and has fast attracted attention based on her genuine results. In this episode, we discuss the realms of anxiety and how it starts and what it looks like. It should be noted that we always recommend dealing with suitably trained professionals prior to working on this. We get to learn about the term, transgenerational transmissions and how that creates a transfer of anxiety. So all aboard ladies and gentleman. Get ready to drop your anchor and join us on this wonderful journey with our resident Psychologist. Episode 52: Getting out of the shit

Getting out of the shit, although a nasty sounding title, has something relevant to do with Pat. Whilst walking through the desert one day on patrol, he got himself in a shitty situation. However, the main focus point in this show is, how to say goodbye to a dog for behavioural reasons. This is a predicament that many of us Professional trainers have had to assess and help make the right choice. We also unpack a little bit about the difference between decision and choice. The show gets a little deep and turns a few corners, however we had an interesting chat. If you enjoy our show and you would like to help us, you can donate as much as a cup of coffee. It’s only once a month on our Patreon page and you get access to extra content. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/become-a-patron/ We hope you enjoy the show and always appreciate listener feedback.

Episode 51: Interviewing Meagan Karnes

Meagan Karnes, otherwise known as the Collared Scholar was in Australia running a series of seminars. Glenn and Pat had the good fortune of sitting down with her to get some insight into her origin story. Prior to Meagan throwing her hat in the ring of dog training, her role was a little different. Or maybe a lot different. Meagan told us the reasons why she became so frustrated prior to starting her new career. This is why she changed her stars in the first place. She also discusses her dogs, how she came to have them and the people who inspired her. It was great to watch her work and introduce us to her style of training, which has hints of other remarkable training mentors. we also enjoyed her infectious laugh and enthusiasm into helping transform relationships between dog and owners. We also spoke briefly about puppy raising which we have spoken about here as well in the picking and raising puppies episode Meagan has her own website and on-line training programs that you can find by clicking here

Episode 50: Diagnosing problems in training

Diagnosing problems in training came from points our listeners were posting in our Facebook group. Given that anyone who has owned or trained or been around dogs knows that there are always going to be problems. We figure it’s best to identify what they are and how we can reduce or completely extinguish them. In addition to that, it’s our 50th show! We are happy to celebrate with you and appreciate all the love and support from people all over the world. We have a lot more great content to come on top of what we have already so buckle in and get ready for a wild ride. More sweat, more laugh, more education and more Glenn and Pat. A couple of good episodes to listen to in relation to this episode would be, selecting and raising puppies. If you haven’t heard the box episode, that’s almost a TCP staple. In closing, Pat started a new client business called Operant Canine. If you want to book some extra time with him you can find him on Facebook.

Episode 49: Dealing with difficult clients and people

Dealing with difficult clients and people is a show we have danced around for a while but decided to finally do it. Anyone in business or life, has moments where discussing issues with people can be difficult. We all have different ways and recommendations of managing these outcomes to attempt to better resolve the outcome. Glenn and Pat share a few of many experiences over the years of dealing with some of the more memorable people and how they worked on the outcome. Conflict resolution is a big business in this day and age with books, seminars, pod-casts and more. Add animals to that mix and you can sometimes be looking at a bigger explosion. An earlier episode we did, http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/07/18/episode-36-keeping-sane-in-the-dog-industry/ helps a little for trainers and industry people when they need a time out. You can also check in with our resident psychologist, Birdie O’Sheedy for some back to sanity assistance.

You may even recall us speaking with Shawn and Janet Edwards in an earlier episode who have worked for, decoy for and judge for Jerry.

Episode 47: Dog parks dystopia or utopia

Dog parks dystopia or utopia came about after Glenn had a small rant on social responsibilities and then Pat re-listened to the episode to correct a point on dog parks. As Pat has a local community dog park area that functions well, he felt the need to makes some valid contributions about how well good people and their dogs behave in some areas. Like everything, there are good and bad dog parks, so the important take home message is to ensure good research is conducted prior to taking your dog there and coming home with a bad experience. We unpack a few topics through this discussion and it goes around in a few different directions, however the modus operandi is always around being responsible and following a good duty of care when out in public with your dog. If you enjoy our shows and you want to help us out or be a part of our education community, we have a Patreon account that helps us improve our standard and produce more content. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=10936632

Episode 46: Social Responsibility

Glenn & Pat discuss the social responsibility issue with people making poor examples of themselves and particularly their breed when out in public spaces. A lot of people want to be out in public spaces with their dog, enjoying the social environment, however there are people who are very vague about their dog and mistake excitability for aggression and problematic behaviour. As always we are advocates of training and we encourage all people who own dogs to become more educated about teaching better form of engagement so you can really enjoy your dog without being in fear of it risking public safety or an altercation with another dog. We also mention that Jay Jack’s SR test through his GRC program is a very easy, very accessible platform for all dog owners, especially the ones that need it, to give them a platform to help in providing a working outlet.

We got to share stories, listen to origins of other trainers, share some laughs and generally hang out with amazing people while Jay Jack was heckling in the background. As we have mentioned, one of the amazing experiences of travelling is meeting new people and making new friends from around the world as we have had the good fortune of doing and by having a conduit such as The Canine Paradigm and other industry shows, we can reach out to people all over the world to help bring our industry closer together. We would like to thank, George Kittridge, Emma Grae Murdock, Bill Church, Josh Moran, Byron Flores, Jay Jack, Chad Mackin, Alex Edwards and Jas Whiting for a great session. Get ready to get sweaty.

We were also advised that we should be making a Patreon account, which we have done to help sponsor the show. Much love again to all those who make time to listen to our podcast.

Episode 43: Questions from our audience Part 2

More questions, more answers. As we didn’t have time to cover the questions asked of us in the last episode, we agreed that it was only reasonable to do another session so we could make our way through more from our listeners so enjoy Questions from our audience Part 2. This episode gets a little preachy but not without good cause. There are factions in our industry that are not cooperating with each other and it’s not due to any good reason other than ego getting in the way and preventing good relationships from occurring and productivity. As an industry we need to look at more reasons to come together, not for more reasons to separate. we are small and vulnerable when we argue and fight.

Episode 42: Questions from our audience Part 1

Episode 40: Dissecting Ego

Dissecting ego is an episode we have wanted to look at for some time now as it can be a troublesome emotion that many of us find damages opportunity, relationships and more. This week we get our resident psychologist, Birdie O’Sheedie back for her 3rd time on the show to help us look at what this little monster is and how to keep it under better control. If you find that people start to disappear from your life, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about looking within to make some small or large changes to enjoy those relationships rather than continue to drive them away.

Episode 38: The Seminar Panel

While Forrest and Josh were in town and we had a live audience, we all thought it would be a great idea to have some beers and talk about our training lives and some deep thoughts in between on our seminar panel. Discussions were intense and a little emotion came to the surface at times, however it was a great time to have a room full of passionate people sit with each other and have the comfort to reminisce on why we came to be here, why we stay and how we can help to look after others and ourselves. Episode 36: Keeping sane in the dog industry

Something slightly different from our usual show however, very relevant as it’s something that has an effect on all most people at one stage or another. The dog industry can be exciting and challenging however, it can also be intimidating and reckless at times as egos are often unchecked. Keeping Sane should be at the top of your priorities to maintain happiness. It’s important to not ignore the signs of feeling burnt out and then knowing what to do before serious health issues start effecting your quality of life. In any event, we always encourage people to seek out suitable health professionals at anytime, for any reason if you’re feeling overwhelmed for longer periods than normal.
