Episode 114: Rescue dog remedy
Rescue dog remedy is an episode that we felt should be discussed as an help file for new owners. not just new owners, it’s also for people who have been given incorrect information. For example, some people are told that their rescue dog has been a part of a bait ring. In a majority of cases, this is highly unlikely. It doesn’t mean some dogs are not subjected to this torment. It does mean that at one time it became a story that escalated quickly. Because of this and other reasons, we felt it was time to make a reference episode for the rescue community. Therefore, we can help by dispelling myths and educate on more of the accuracy. If you are looking to get yourself a rescue or know someone that is, perhaps consider this episode. It may give someone a better start to sharing a life with a new dog. We would like to acknowledge many of the people who work in this field. There are so many who give their time freely and compassionately. It can be full of reward and tears as there are so many moving parts in this industry. People also like to know what they can do to help out. Sometimes a donation will go a long way, other ways to help are to volunteer. Another suggestion we encourage is to do some research. This will go a long way in helping you learn a lot more about who you’re dealing with. There are always a mix of good and bad in all industries. At any time if you are uncertain, reach out and ask others in the industry. Use resources that are available on-line and don’t let emotions cloud good judgement. Episode 113: Taking care of you
Taking care of you may sound arbitrary, however it’s often so easy overlooked and undervalued. In many cases, dog handlers will fuss more over what their dog is eating while not giving a second thought to themselves. It’s so wonderful that we are learning to take better care of our dogs. Owners are making better choices in diet and staying more informed on what should go into their pets food. But what about us? Why is it that our care has taken a back step? What type of backwards world are we living in that our health and wellbeing plays second fiddle to our pets? This is why Narelle is speaking about her passion to make you aware of how easy self care can be. Furthermore, if we do spend a little more time on our health, it pays off in dividends in our training. Finally, if you want more advise on how to do this, reach out to Narelle because it’s what she does best. Episode 111: Urban Myths Part 2
Urban Myths Part 2 was inevitable after we had a backlog of myths from our last farming session. There are so many myths out there it’s almost impossible not to hear them. However, there were a few that we had not heard before that were both comical and troubling. For example, If you give a working dog milk, it will never work again! Or you can get pregnant by sitting on a toilet seat. That’s the kind of information that old mate down the road loves telling the kids. Urban myths exist in all industries and just for the hell of it. Thanks to our number 1 fan, Emma Murdoch for collecting a boat load of bullshit for your listening pleasure. We do hope you enjoys our new batch of myths for 2020 Further details If your looking for contact details and supporters of The Canine Paradigm, look no further. Episode 110: Reflection & Gratitude
Reflection and Gratitude are virtues that most share around the time midnight ticks over on the 31st of December. Reflection allows us to examine life in and around us with a little more detail. Gratitude is recognising the many good people and things in our life that have made it great. For example, if we both reflect on the past 2 years, we are very grateful for where we are. We are also grateful for where we are going. The AMAZING people around us, the opportunities that have arisen. Sometimes in life, we look and focus on the things that are hard and not going as planned. It’s a little to easy to focus on these at times so it’s good to have reminders on what to be grateful for. It also allows peaceful reflection. We hope you all have a wonderful 2020 and we thank you for following us on our journey. Please join us on more education and hilarity throughout the year. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/12/24/episode-109-surviving-christmas/ Further details If your looking for contact details and supporters of The Canine Paradigm, look no further. Episode 109: Surviving Christmas
Surviving Christmas is about enduring the fatigue which comes at this time of year for almost everyone. Ideally, Christmas should be about spending time with loved ones and if your religious, it about the birth of Christ. It has however become a hard time of year for so many people for many different reasons. It’s also a time of year where we need to be more vigilant about our dogs, their behaviour and eating habits. There’s many reasons why this year can be stressful, however we would hope that you do make time to find the love in it. Thank you for being a part of our TCP family. Episode 108: Ask us anything part 3
Ask us anything part 3 is the third and final part of our string of listener questions. We had a lot of fun doing this and being able to interact with out audience. Also, when you ask for anything, you get some very good questions. Thanks to everyone who submitted questions. We hope you like and enjoy the responses and always remember this point. We do not and will not ever claim to be the authority on every point. In most cases we are having a conversation about topics we are familiar with. Episode 107: Patience
Patience is a virtue. It’s also one of those traits many of us lose all too often. We all know we should have more of it as it serves us well in so many life aspects. Such as work, family and dog training, just to name a few. Luck for us we have our beloved Birdy to join us on the show once again to coach both of us in patience. We know we can benefit from it as it highlights so many applications. Just editing a podcast takes patience. There’s lots of stops and start along the way to get this content cleaned up. But what about in dog training. When shaping new skills we have to be patient. It takes time to learn new skills for puppies and dogs or any other species. “Beware the fury of a patient man”. Katrina Hartwell is one of those people who will come into your life and you wont be able to forget her. It may not occur to you why at the time that she’s one of the nicest people to meet. She doesn’t say much at first. Katrina is quite quiet when you first meet her, however she is a deep thinker with a big heart. We didn’t know it at the time that Katrina is a known and celebrated Bandog breeder. Apparently world famous too. As well as all that, she’s the meme queen in our local dog chat groups and hilarious. Episode 104: Ask us anything part 1
Ask us anything Part 1 obviously means there’s a part 2 in the works. However, if our devoted listeners have questions, we try and do our best to answer them. Some of the questions were fantastic too and it was great to see so many of them. We have professed before and we will continue to do so, we are not the authority on everything. If we don’t know the answer to a question we hope to find the person who may have it. Too many time in this industry we have people answering questions with no real knowledge of the topic. It’s important to ask the right person, not just someone who will put their hand up to have a go. There’s no shame to ask the right questions to relevant people. The best part of any good education is to go on a journey to meet fascinating people with great stories. Episode 99: Dr Roger Abrantes IACP
Dr Roger Abrantes IACP is an interview we have both been eagerly waiting for. Dr. Abrantes is an author on the behaviour of animals He has a PhD in evolutionary biology and ethology and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. He is the divisional director at the Ethology Institute Cambridge where he holds regular lectures. Because of the work or people like Dr Abrantes, we now understand a lot more about the behaviour of animals. One of the key areas that he has stood out for us is his definitions on aggression and predatory behaviour. He was also kind enough to correct us both on a mistake in our understanding that will be beneficial for the entire training community. It was a genuine honour and privilege to have a conversation with this wonderful person. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/09/18/dr-casara-andre-iacp-2019/ Further details If your looking for contact details and supporters of The Canine Paradigm, look no futher. Episode 98: Dr Ian Dunbar IACP
Dr Ian Dunbar IACP conference was quite an honour and privilege for us to meet and speak with him. Ian Dunbar is well known throughout the world as a vet, behaviourist, author and speaker. The good Dr is also known for his outspoken views which has gained him both hot and cold receptions. It was quite an experience getting to meet Ian Dunbar. He is a very charismatic personality in public life, however he explains it’s different for him in private. We have both followed his early work and found segments differing from our own beliefs. However, this is not uncommon for most professionals. We did come to realise that we and many others have cherry picked topics. Ian explained that sometimes it’s fairer to read and understand the entire message instead of just the paragraph. This point alone was a pearl of wisdom to encourage critical thinking. It was an enjoyable conversation and a valuable experience for us to have the opportunity. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as we did. Episode 97: Canine consent
Canine consent is a topic we chose to look into on the weeks podcast as it’s one of intrigue. There is now a growing number of supporters suggesting that we should ask consent from a dog before certain practices. However, when there’s an argument for a practice, there is usually one against. So naturally, there is a suggestion that it is not possible for a dog to consent to. Now, we’re asking for the fact. What are they? What is the supporting science? Episode 96: Catching up with Emma Murdock IACP
Catching up with Emma Murdock IACP was great as we spent some down time with our number 1 fan. Anyone who’s listened to the show and been in our forums has known this for a while. Emma Murdock has her own business in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and we got to see it in person. Her business name is Walk with me Ottawa which you can see below in the links. We have also befriended many of the Walk with me Ottawa gang who have their own Instagram thing going. The first time we saw it we started to realise how neat it was. We always appreciate our listeners and their support. Emma, as mentioned has been a huge influence with new listeners and people from Ontario and throughout Canada. She also helps by being a TCP site admin and advocate of many of our beliefs. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/07/05/whelping-raising-and-training/ Further details Fine out more about GRC dog sports here Details on joining the IACP cane be found here Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 95: Jay Jack on Flexi’s at IACP
Jay Jack on Flexi’s at IACP was always bound to be a topic of controversy and hilarity mixed with education. It’s almost impossible now to know this show and not know Jay Jack as he has contributed a so much. In fact you would most likely know of his podcast with Chad Mackin, Dog training conversations. So at this years conference, Jay got to present on Flexi Leads and as expected, it was a crowd pleasing topic. Jay was very entertaining and dig a great job of presenting his argument. If you’re not up to date on Flexi leads, there a great deal of provocation about the safety of their use. Like all tools, there’s a learning curve that must be maintained to master its use. If you have never heard Jay Jack speak, you’re missing out. He’s very captivating and very real in his delivery and humour which makes his shows so much fun. We also got to catch up with Jasmine Whiting while she has been travelling around the states. She has been hosting work shops, seminars and kicking butt in BJJ comps. It’s been wonderful to see her so happy and her personal growth coming along in leaps and bounds. The IACP conference speakers this year have been top notch and it was wonderful to see Jay present. Episode 94: Our summary abroad
Episode 94: Our summary abroad is really that. A summary of our time and experience during the Canadian seminar and the IACP conference. We started with a very long plane flight from Sydney to Montreal, followed by a 2 hour drive the next day to Ottawa. From there we had a little time to settle in before the seminar started. Over the following days we got to meet and teach some amazing people who were just incredible people. Some of those people even joined us at conference for the IACP. Following on from there, we left Canada to head back to the USA to meet up with Shawn and Janet Edwards. Every year they hold a trial to honour the memory of Janet’s PSA 3 dog Zuko over a 2 day trail. Glenn got to learn more judging experience and Pat assisted in decoying. After that we both headed off on another visit of Americas airports to head to the IACP conference. This years conference was in Colorado Springs with over 500 people attending. It goes without saying that it was an amazing time and we met more great people. Glenn was asked to join the IACP board of directors and was accepted which was a huge honour. The entire experience was a blast and the conference ended it well Further details Details on joining the IACP cane be found here Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 93: Dr. Casara Andre IACP 2019
Dr. Casara Andre IACP 2019 was an unexpected delight at the conference this year. We had never heard of her or the work she was involved in until now. This is why having these opportunities is so important so we can meet new people and find out what they are doing. Cannabis, THC and CBD have been a stigma for many years and only recently have we begun to relax. Laws in many countries now are starting to realise that there are potential treatments available. Even now there are new studies in the medical and veterinarian fields showing enormous benefits. This is why it was exciting for us to meet and talk with Dr. Casara Andre and her colleague, John about their work. When we make an effort to understand subjects with more depth, we demonise them less. If we have better means to treat our pets with more natural products, isn’t that worth knowing more about? Episode 92: Larry Krohn IACP 2019
Larry Krohn IACP 2019 heads up our first of several interviews we had the honour of conducting at this years conference. What an amazing turnout it was too. With over 500 members in attendance, we got to see some amazing presenters and attendees. No stranger to The Canine Paradigm, Larry Krohn is also known to many around the world. He is a generous Vlogger giving away so much material which has earned a following around the world. Speaking of Larry and his vlogger efforts, his Youtube views have reached over 7 million views. Prior ro coming to conference this year, Larry was just coaching in Scotland with another buddy, Duke Furgerson. We got to hear a little of the run down on what they were both doing over there. From the sounds of things, we could learn something from their practices. A very popular trainer and a hell of a nice guy, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this episode as much as we did. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/07/20/episode-86-interviewing-melanie-benware/ Further details Details on joining the IACP cane be found here Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 91: Only so many spoons to give
Only so many spoons to give is based on the theory of 10 spoons. This is a philosophy, that also represents how many fucks you may have to give in a day. So for example, if something you do takes energy away from you, that could be one or many spoons. However, if it’s something you enjoy doing, it may add them back again. We hope you enjoy this concept as a measure of self help. It may indicate when you need to slow down and work out what you have in reserve to make it through the day. http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/01/16/drop-your-anchor/ Further details Details on joining the IACP cane be found here Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 90: Habits of attention whores
Habits of attention whores in ANOTHER episode we have now done in response to people in our industry acting poorly! We actually thought we may have been done for a while after episode 88 but no. So here we are once again. The dog training industry is full of some of the most amazing people you could ever meet. Many of them are so generous and friendly with hearts of gold. But every yin has its yang which means there are some turds too. These are your every day attention whores. Sad people looking for love in all the wrong places. We need to be doing a lot better for this industry. we have said that quite a lot now and while things are on the improve, there’s more to be done. Episode 89: Conversations with trainers in Melbourne
Conversations with trainers in Melbourne happened as we were doing out first ever combined seminar thanks to Alex Edwards. If you don’t know Alex, he’s a buddy of our from Melbourne running his own training centre. Alex has hosted several trainers around Australia and the USA. He also shares our passion of improving our industry. His company is called, Refine Your Canine and we will link it below. In the past, a lot of dog trainers have been very jealous of each other. They have spent too much energy trying to discredit their fellow industry operators. We’ve often addressed on the show how important it is to turn this around. For our own good, we need to work together more and raise standards. It is happening but it’s happening at a slow pace. There’s an old joke that says that the only thing two dog trainers will agree on is what the third is doing wrong. We need to stop thinking like this and it’s promising to know there are people wanting to change these practices. It’s a long blown out way of saying how much we appreciate Alex for supporting his own. Dog trainers in Melbourne have really been investing in their education as have many of the other states. We loved having the time to meet many of the people who gave their time to come and see us. Thank you to the trainers who came up to share their back stories on the show. It was a wonderful weekend we wont forget. Further details Details on joining the IACP cane be found here Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 88: Pocket of rocks in a glass house
Pocket of rocks in a glass house come from the phrase, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. We’re all guilty of it from time to time. Accusing others of the very things we do ourselves. However, some people don’t realise the damage they are doing to their own reputation. Of course it’s a metaphor for judgemental hypocrites. The other problem here is that we often joke around about how it’s the industry. If it is prolific in our industry, how are we sustaining such a bad average? Gardening is supposed to promote growth, not to encourage warfare. Lets practice been gardeners instead. Grow things, be useful, encourage your neighbours to do the same. Help your neighbourhood, be useful, if you see a problem go help fix it, don’t just create more problems. Episode 87: Do as I say not as I do
Do as I say not as I do is often a mantra echoed via teachers around the world. Sometimes, even parents will suggest this to their children, often for good reason. For example, a parent may drink alcohol which they are at the informed stage of life to do so. The parent would tell the child not to do the very behaviour they do for their own well-being. However, the topic of this podcast came from our Facebook page and it relates to clients. Do as I say, not as I do is something you tell people to prevent them from making mistakes. We’re talking about mistakes they can’t live with and more from the dogs point of view. Your client may see you doing something with your own dog and want to mimic your relationship. The problem for them is it may not reflect their ideals. Our job as trainers is to give our clients the best relationship with their dog. This means we need to pay attention to the things that are most important to them. that way we are more successful at keeping dogs alive and in their original homes. Episode 86: Interviewing Melanie Benware
Interviewing Melanie Benware in this episode was for two reasons. One, to find out a little bit more about her and her business. Two, to discuss her role as President for the IACP. If you haven’t heard us speak of the IACP before, perhaps you are new to the show? This year we will be the official podcasters for the International Association of Canine Professionals. As Mentioned above, Melanie has recently assumed the presidential role from our good friend, Tyler Muto. Being the president in any organisation both comes with its advantages and its disadvantages. The main role of the president is not dissimilar than that of a ships captain. You need a great ship and a great crew to take care of your passengers. Melanie also shares with us her role of becoming a professional dog trainer which is where all our hearts lie. Episode 85: Interviewing Greg Tonkins
Interviewing Greg Tonkins has been on the cards for a while. A fellow Aussie, larakin and bushy from the outback. Greg is well known for several reasons, one of them being great at pig hunting and training pig dogs. We wanted to speak with Greg about this as he is injecting a bit of a spin on an old tradition. Pig hunting has remained similar in it’s training practices for many years , however Greg is looking to change that. Greg also chats with us about the negative community feeling towards pig hunting. One of these issues is that people believe these are monster dogs that eat little babies and kill everything. They also have a incorrect image of pigs. What people fail to realise is that are describing any dog with poor breeding and socialisation practices. Pig dogs in many cases are mixed breed dogs that are also family dogs. They do have a biological capacity for pig hunting, however it still needs to be trained. We also talk about the negative aspect pigs are having on farm land and the environment. many don’t realise they are an introduced pest and in some cases very dangerous. Pig hunting does help to reduce the numbers and return the endangered species. There’s a lot more we can tell you about Greg so we will look forward to having a chat with him in the future. We are looking forward to our next interview. Further details Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 84: Ending dog world friendships
Ending dog world friendships can be a tough thing to do. Quite often these people are considered to be our family. They are people we may know very well and have been a part of each others lives for years. In many ways it can be like we are in a marriage. It’s often not any easy thing to do to walk away from people you consider friends, family or maybe even real relatives. However, sometimes you need may need to. Relationships can become so toxic that it’s not good for either party to be involved in such situations. You may need to do a little active soul searching yourself to discover if you are the problem. Sometimes, we point the bone of blame conveniently at others before we look within. If there’s often ongoing issues, you have to look at what is the common denominator. An effective strategy in improving and maintaining good friendships is great communication. People can’t read minds and assumptions are considered the mother of all stuff ups. Fortunately for us, our dogs will still love us and that’s a great resolution at the end of a tough day. We still need our friendships and our relationships. They still provide us with good health, good opportunity and love. It’s better overall for us if we continue to enjoy our social interactions Further details Glenn is found these days right here. Episode 83: Whelping, raising and training
Whelping, raising and training puppies is an important conversation in most professional training circles. We know it comes with some backlash at times too by groups who want to see more rescue options. Rescue is an important choice, however it should still be a choice and not a gun to the head obligation like many other opinions out there. You all know we support rescue. We encourage it on most levels and promote many of the good people doing it. Likewise, we promote and encourage good breeding practices. Without them, we are losing the ability to produce sound dogs for valuable social roles. We also introduce Geoff Madgwick to the show who invented a new whelping box called Whelpmate. Glenn contacted geoff a while back when he was expecting puppies from his French Bulldog. Geoff was kind enough to loan his invention so it could be tested and the results were very positive. Whelping puppies is a tricky and intricate process that requires some thought when you plan to be involved. It’s true that dogs have been having puppies all by themselves for many years without our interference. It’s also advisable to be as much hands off as you can be, however you should know when to step in. So if we are asked what dog is best for an application in regards to puppies and rescues, we agree that you should consider either. You need to consider your role requirements, your patience for pups etc. If you have a need for an adult dog, go searching through the rescue organisations. Episode 82: Jay Jack GRC update
Jay Jack GRC update. Always wonderful to have our close personal friend Jay Jack back on the show. Being a fellow podcaster and one of our inspirations in creating our own show, we wanted to catch up. On top of that, Jay will be in Australia this coming July 2019 to speak more about GRC. As we discussed on the show, this is a great dog sport that allows almost any dog type access. There are of course some conditions that may exclude dogs later on, however the entry levels are amazing. If you don’t know who Jay is by now, he hosts his own show called GRC dog talk. Prior to that he was involved in a very successful podcast with fellow trainer and also friend of ours, Chad Mackin. Jay is also a master in Brazilian jiu Jitsu, where he run his gym in Maine USA. This is also GRC headquarters. When you hear Jay talk about his beginning in the dog world and how he shaped his career into becoming GRC, he attributes them to what he learned from his father. You can hear Jay talk about that and more in episodes of Dog training conversations with Chad and many more great pearls of wisdom. We can’t talk about a Jay Jack GRC update without mentioning our great friend, Jasmin Whiting, AKA Sweats. Jas is running and managing GRC in Australia and is bringing out Jay for his second tour. Episode 81: Our thoughts on group classes
Our thoughts on group classes came about from a show listeners who asked a variation of good questions. Some of those questions were in relation to how to run the best type of class. Another question was, what would that look like? Everyone has their take on what the ideal group class should like. Some prefer tradition, some prefer to make the trial orientated and some like to have their spin. Good classes come from good management. If you establish a great environment, you will have people captivated and wanting to learn more. However, there’s more to it than just being organised and running classes. You need to be well educated yourself. If you’re a team, that means that the team should be up skilled as well. Know your topic. Craft it like a master craftsman and give your clients access to the very best information. classes should consist of all relevant classes from puppy all the way to advanced obedience. However, as mentioned, these are our thoughts on group classes. Some training centres prefer to makes their classes more about socialization. Rather than focus on just routine, they focus on the benefit of having a dog who can cope with pressures of the world. So we have shared our thoughts on group classes, we would appreciate you sharing yours. After you listen to the podcast, jump on to our Facebook group and fill us in on you perfect class. Episode 80: Trial preparedness and nerves
Trial preparedness and nerves is something all dog sport competitors go through. In fact most people are nervous in trials. There’s something about putting it all on the line that scares the bravest of us. However, it shows us where our preparedness has taken us and gives us insight on what we need to do next. It’s normal to be nervous in trials as we are being judged by our peers. It’s also because we take pride in our work and we want to do well. Trial preparedness and nerves was an episode we wanted to speak more on after observing people in competition. Some people talk a lot, others not at all. Sometimes they become emotional by crying or being angry at their performance. Some helpful measures before trialling are, getting plenty of rest, meditating, talking about how you feel. Everyone has their way of dealing with their own nerves. Another important point is to practice the routine until it feels natural. Almost like you could do it blindfolded. Just by following these processes we can eliminate how nervous in trials we become. Trialling does have an upside as well in that we can experience great joy and relief. We can also celebrate in victory if it goes our way. Trial preparedness and nerves is an episode that explores both the highs and the lows. No matter how a competitor does, we should always support and encourage anyone who comes out on the field. It’s always easier to speak of something from the other side of the barrier. Pat Stuart almost got PSA2 at this trial and can be found at Operant Canine Glenn Cooke started his judging apprenticeship and runs Canine Evolution http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/11/24/episode-53-a-birdys-eye-view-on-anxiety/
Episode 79: Cannabalism in the industry
Cannabalism in the indutry is also about a lack of support in the industry for each other. We find it incredibly frustrating that small groups of people just seem to want to go it alone. Can you imagine how much better it may be if we joined forces? Still doing our own thing but using our collectove might to speak up on issues. not just the small ones but the big ticket items. We need to be better than this. The lack of support in the industry is honestly alarming. The dog sport groups being the worst. When we do talk about the cannabalism in the industry, it starts with many of these groups and works its way around. Our groups don’t need to be best friends. We don’t all need to hang out with each other and yes, we can agree to disagree. All of us need to think about what’s happening outside our own pettiness. Who’s lobbying against us and what are they planning on taking away or stopping next? These issues never go away and they will be with our children, however it’s what we do now that makes the difference. Other groups never rest. They never leave the wheel unmanned and they have far more people willing to take that wheel. What’s even more surpring is that each side thinks they are the good guys. Each side feels they are doing the right thing. All side feels they are the champions of the dogs. Each side believes they are saving lives. Pat Stuart is dog his part to prevent cannabalism in the industry at Operant Canine Glenn Cooke knows that lack of support in the industry will be our downfall and wont allow that at Canine Evolution http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/10/04/episode-45-social-responsibility/ http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/03/29/living-with-a-reactive-dog/
Episode 78: Urban myths in training
Urban myths in training. there’s literally hundreds of them. Some are funny, some are silly and some are harmful. The harmful dog training myths are the problem ones as they are passed on to people by professionals. They then take what their told and tell others and so on. Where do these myths come from? Who starts? Does anyone fact check? Dog training myths will always be around, however we should now start to put out some facts. There’s not just urban myths in training, there are myths in all fields. I’m sure most of us have had a dad or uncle tell us a few old wives tales AND we believed them. Remember the one your mum would say? If you pull a face and the wind blows, your face will stay that way! Some of them were even classic ghost stories that we told to scare each other around camp fires We had some fun with urban myths in training as there are some silly dog training myths out there. We hope you see the silly side in it as well and share the irony behind the story Pat’s a myth buster at Operant Canine Glenn loves his dog training myths at Canine Evolution http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/04/14/get-comfortable-saying-no/
Episode 77: Trainers making terrible videos
Trainers making terrible videos does not portray our industry well. It creates ammunition for the parties already with agendas. In this pod-cast, we discuss our concerns around the videos but also ask what could be done better? How do you convince a fellow trainer that their work that they believe is good is in fact, not? The question that needs to be asked is, if it was you, what would change your mind? Trainer videos fall into a lot of categories. Some are complete marketing nonsense, some are highly valuable, educational material and then there are just bombs. Unfortunately there is no way to stop trainers making terrible videos. we just have to hope that if they are approached by a peer review group that they may pay attention. Hate groups are not the answer either. Having more uneducated numb-skulls chiming in on the witch hunt doesn’t help. In fact that can have and has had terrible consequences. Education is always the best option if you have a receptive candidate. Be patient and keep offering to point out what better training options are available. There are some amazing training video out in the community. High value, generous free information by skilled artists giving away information gratis. You have to dig around the sewer to find the pearls, however it is worth it and sometimes you can have someone send you the link. Send it to some trusted colleagues first. Ask them to give honest constructive feedback and if they tell you it’s not great, listen to their advise. Glenn Cooke will give you realistic feeback and can be found at Canine Evolution Pat Stuart’s known for keeping it real at Operant Canine http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2019/01/30/the-flow-state/
Episode 76: Who governs the animal law makers
Who governs the animal law makers is a question most of us should be asking. It’s important to know who writes our laws and why? Who are the key stakeholders the benefit from the news laws or even many of the old ones? Is it some of us and if so who are they, or do we all benefit? Is it for the good of the community or for the popularity and relevancy of a politician? As you can see above, there’s already a list of questions that can be asked and should be. For many of us in the dog training industry there are already invasive dog laws. But hold on your hats, as there’s more on the horizon and there will be not long after that. What happens when they write all these new laws? Do they redact the old ones or do they just remain to linger on. We believe that when dog laws are being suggested that there should be open community consultation. Not just the in crowd or the people that are preferred. This might not be the case but it feels like it as there are times when the only way you find out about them is after the fact. After reading all that, don’t you feel it’s important to know who governs the animal law makers? And wouldn’t it be appreciated to know they serve all of us too. Episode 75: Greyhounds and horses with Jedda and Georgie
Greyhounds and horses with Jedda and Georgie is the longest title we believe we have had on our show before. This podcast may raise some eyebrows in some circles as both ladies are involved in the racing industry. Not unlike most industries, there is speculation and often untruths around what people think and feel. This occurs more often when people feel strong emotions about something they see as aversive. It’s true that animal racing industries have had dark past and unscrupulous people. Those people are seeping into all the cracks however and it has to be identified as a people problem. People cause problems in rescue industries as well. Well meaning, big hearted people can be huge issues without even knowing it. Greyhounds and horses with Jedda and Georgie is about what jedda Ctlack and Georgie Harrington bring to the industry. Both ladies are ethical, dedicated caring individuals who love their dogs and horses and want the best for them. they also want better standards overall. When we have these types of people in the racing industries, we know we have people who are there to care. We also need to be aware that some of these animals want to and enjoy the thrill of the race. Some people believe that an ideal life for an animal is a sedentary lifestyle. Laying on the couch getting fat, is not the life an active animal desires and it’s not what their genes beckon for. But neither is cruelty and mistreatment. Or role is custodians of the animals we care for must be one of love, compassion and respect. Episode 74: Asked to leave a dog club
Asked to leave a dog club may not be the same as being kicked out of a dog club. Sometimes it feels like the same thing, however their may be valid reasons why the club cannot except you. They may be full, you may not be suitable or your dog may not be suitable or it could be conflict. Not all clubs are the same though. Some are very transparent, some are deceptive. Many are run by dedicated and hard working people, some are run by people who are small in many ways other than their ego. Groucho Marx once stated that he wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that excepted him as a member. Sometimes it’s best to avoid clubs with problematic people. This will prevent you having to be asked to leave a dog club without knowing why. Not all people who apply for membership have an immediate right in many clubs. Many agree that this is often a good thing as some people who want to join may have silly agendas too. Therefore it may not be the club but the individual who is a wrong fit. In any event, some times it’s best to move one rather than force the issue of being kicked out of a dog club. It may also encourage you to start your own and recruit your own suitable members. Episode 73: The two wolves expanded
The two wolves expanded is the tale of the two wolves that many of us have most likely heard. We each have two wolves fighting for our soul. A good wolf or a bad wolf or a white wolf and a dark wolf. The question is asked, “which wolf would win the fight?” The answer being, the one that we feed. In this episode, Birdy O’Sheedy joins Glenn Cooke once again to expand on the tale of the two wolves. Some times we tend to hear the abbreviated versions of great stories. This can and unfortunately often does leave out some of the most valued content which makes more sense. This is why Birdy was so passionate about the explanation of expanding into the deeper story. Why the two wolves need each other and how we need to feed them both. The two wolves expanded may give you a better understanding of the importance of a balanced life rather than just one or the other. Can you think of times where you have needed mix of opposites to balance out a situation in your life? Episode 72: Get comfortable saying NO
Get comfortable saying No. Sounds pretty easy right? Well according to therapists it’s quite a challenge for some people to do. They get nervous, they are overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts, it’s really quite, uncomfortable. So how do we bite the bullet and do it? Fortunately we have Birdie O’Sheedy on the show today to discuss this very topic Many people find it ok and are comfortable not saying yes, however they still avoid saying the word, no. Do people feel they will be rejected? Is it something they struggled with during adolescence? Do they feel rewarded by avoiding the word? On the other side, what happens to us when we avoid saying words like no? How does it effect us and our behaviour long term? This is why we discuss that people need to get comfortable saying NO. We also get to find out during the show that Birdy, Narelle and Glenn are planning on running seminars. Focusing on the body, mind and behaviour of dogs and owners. This can bring about more pleasure in owning and keeping a dog in the home. Birdy can be contacted here for dogs and here for humans Glenn is found in these parts. Episode 71: Bart Bellon on remote trainers
Bart Bellon on remote trainers is a story about Bart and Michael Bellon and their development of the Chameleon. The Bellon’s were involved in the early concept of remote trainers with Charles Martin and then bought the company. Bart goes on to explain what the difference is with a Martin systems compared to other models on the market. As many of you already know, The Canine Paradigm doesn’t shy away from talking about everything. We don’t condone stupid training or animal cruelty, even though some view remote trainers in this light. Many feel it’s important to have an open mind, open heart approach to training. We also feel that knowing all side of the story makes the story complete. For us, we felt it important to have Bart Bellon on remote trainers as he is one of the world authorities. Inventor and user for people in our industry, he and Michael have a sound idea on the application and design. We know that some people will always have an opinion based in fear and in grape vine stories. We only recommend that real investigation with industry professionals at least be explored. Episode 70: Living with a reactive dog
Living with a reactive dog can be difficult and for some, upsetting. When most people think of reactivity, they are immediately drawn to aggression. Reactivity is beyond the scope of just aggression as it is really about how any species responds to stimuli. For example, you may have a dog that is very quiet normally, except when a cat is present. In this example, the focus is now on predatory drive rather than that of fear based aggression. Many forms of reactivity are associated with frustration and sometimes the end result is different than initially believed. A reactive dog draws a lot of attention to itself and the owner which is where the emotions come into play. They are more than likely to be avoided and excluded from social play. Many times this is the best outcome as these dogs can be aggressive. In any event, if you are living with a reactive dog, you should be seeking advise from a creditable behaviour expert. Their assessment and advise can often correct the behavioural pathway and improve the relationship between you and the dog. Glenn Cooke can help you with reactivity and aggression at Canine Evolution Pat Stuart will get you on the right path at Operant canine http://www.thecanineparadigm.com/2018/10/10/episode-47-dog-parks-dystopia-or-utopia/ This always gets a run on the show
Episode 69: Customer expectations
Customer expectations can be varied. What we mean by that is that some customers have reasonable views and others, well they don’t. Some have an expectation, however they fail to maintain the most simplistic obligation. We all find this frustrating. Anyone in any industry does when you know that the only way results will be maintained or improved is with cooperation. The expectations of customers can be over the top, unachievable and bizarre. The only time it’s a problem is when you or any industry professional allows the belief to continue. If they are consulted well at the start and in easy to digest writing, both parties have clarity. If you were not clear and elusive just to get the sale, you leave yourself open to being challenged. The reason why is because you did not meet your customer expectations. Sometimes just when you think you have a handle on it, along comes the next customer. It’s not always easy to get a read on people but you need to try your best. Speak clearly, with honesty and integrity. Listen when you need to and do what you can to help. Episode 68: Getting to the point with Askholes
Getting to the point with askholes is really based on two separate points that we cleverly combined for the title. So how did we come up with concept? Jordan Peterson, our close personal friend was in town discussing his book, The 12 Rules for life. During his talk, he focused on rule 10, Be precise in your speech. Of the several topics, Jordan told the crowd how we often tell stories but fail to get to the point. Not getting to the point can be frustrating. Like watching a movie that has no plot and it leaves you asking questions at the end. Want to know what’s more frustrating? Askholes. An askhole is someone that asks for your advise and then does the opposite. They also ask everyone else in town too while they continue to ignore their advise or worse, messing it up. Not getting to the point and being an askhole each have their frustrations. Want to get in touch with Pat? Operant Canine Need to reach out to Glenn? Episode 67: Interviewing Pat Nolan
Interviewing Pat Nolan was a great honour for us as it is with all our guests. It always adds to the polish when you have someone who is considered a cornerstone in our industry. Pat Nolan is a name deeply connected to the canine industry mainly through his long career in gun dogs. Now when people think of Pat, they consider the early work he contributed to our modern day scent work. This was one of the many interesting points of discussion we had in this podcast. starting with puppy imprinting and moving into the career of a working dog. Many of the great operators in this industry have gained their ideas from people like Pat Nolan. Episode 66: Interviewing Dallas Burkevics
Interviewing Dallas Burkevics was something we have both wanted to do for quite some time. The reason for this is that Dallas has been a long serving rescue organiser, with a wealth of experience. Many people don’t know and don’t understand how much effort people in rescue go to. The time, energy and effort required is like planning a rock concert. The other major point behind the rescue fence is that these people deal with the dogs many people discard like trash. They welcome them into their own homes, have those same home destroyed and then do it again. They work full time jobs, have families, no social life because they are organising these very same dogs. People like Dallas Burkevics have hearts of gold, however it plays havoc in their lives at times. But if someone doesn’t rise up to take on the overflow of discarded dogs, what happens to them? The men and women, mainly women, in the rescue organisations need our help and support. They need funds and donations to pay for their bills. They make no money from this themselves. It costs them money to do it. It was our great pleasure to be Interviewing Dallas Burkevics and we hope that it helps raise some much needed awareness. Episode 65: Tyler Muto Round 2
Tyler Muto Round 2. If you remember last time we had Tyler on out show, like many of guests, he got to tell us his origins. If you don’t recall his original interview, go here Now he’s back and we get down to chatting about some odd trends. People are bragging about how they don’t train their dogs to be obedient. Some of the the points may sound quite silly, however we go into detail with Tyler to discuss various meanings behind the claim. Tyler is a very well educated guy and he is highly intellectual and very pragmatic. Having just finished his term as president for the IACP, Tyler is now focusing his energies on his next project, Consider the Dog. Apart from all his accomplishments, Tyler is an all round good guy, a great ambassador for training, defender of the balanced community and one of our close personal friends. We really enjoyed having Round 2 with Tyler Muto and we are looking forward to round 3. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as we did.
