Ep #59: Indulgent Emotions

Indulgent emotions are those that you are comfortable with but don’t serve you at all; in other words, they don’t get you the results you want. Doubt is a good example of an indulgent emotion: it feels like it might protect you in some way when it fact it only prevents you from reaching your goals. Doubt is a beta condition that puts you in a place ahead of time, therefore anticipating an outcome based on the past. This outcome more often than not comprises failure, and therefore the doubt makes you fail even before you’ve tried! Comfort is another popular indulgence: we want to avoid the unfamiliar and tend to revert to the known whenever the going gets too tough. A lot of us struggle with social and approach anxiety, worrying and stressing about interacting with and meeting people. The good news is that this is a problem that you can overcome, just like I did! I used to find it very hard to attend gathering and parties and would find excuses to not go or drink too much when I did, to buffer these feelings. The main lesson here is to take ownership of our feelings and concerns. It can often feel like we know what others might be thinking of us or problems they may have with the way we look or act. Ep #56: Shame

It is said that shame is the most human of emotions, something we all share. But that does not mean we cannot improve our relationship to this feeling and alter the path of where it comes from. Shame does not arise from things we do or experience, it is the result of thoughts that we have about ourselves and how others view us. As soon as we start taking control of these thoughts and rearranging our patterns of behavior in a more nourishing and intentional way, we can break free from the cycle of shame and hiding away from the world. The word shame is a derivative of the idea of covering up or staying hidden and this is what we do when we feel ashamed. It is also what continues the pattern! Ep #55: Loneliness

Contrary to what you might believe or may have been told, loneliness is not such a big deal. Like so many other things, we tend to think that changing our circumstances is going to make us feel less lonely. But the problem is never the circumstance but rather the thoughts we have about that circumstance. We often speak about loneliness as if it’s an all-consuming state of being, but it’s a time-limited feeling like any other. It’s fleeting. It also has nothing to do with the lack of people around you because it’s possible to experience intense loneliness while surrounded by people. We create this loneliness by alienating ourselves from others and believing that we are rejected or misunderstood by them. Today on the show I sit down to talk about morning anxiety-producing thinking and how it can be managed. I share some of the mental strategies that I have researched and practiced myself which have been very effective for me in learning to create more positive thought patterns in my life, which start when I wake up. Most of us wake up and immediately experience some kind of negative and obsessive thought pattern, which can often end up affecting the entire day. What most of us don’t realize though, is that these thought patterns are actually a natural brain activity called the Beta state. This is proven by the fact that even when outside events change or get better, the brain still tends to worry about them, or even finds new things to worry about. Coming to this important realization can help us to catch ourselves in that state, see it for what it is, and in doing so, step back from it.
