S21 Ep 2#326: How to Lead When Busy, Scaling, or Failing with Matt Lesser

A familiar face on Lanci's other podcast series is here! This discussion with Matt Lesser includes:Lessons from working with leaders on every continentWhat its like growing up in a household of entrepreneursFrom creating business and private equity to finding passion as an entrepreneurIntegrating pillars of leadershipMeet Matt: I grew up in a small, lake community in northeast Indiana. We moved there because my dad had an opportunity to buy into a wholesale oil distributorship.Growing up in a town of 700, living with a family business, and attending a small, Christian school (my graduating class had 7) gave me a very narrow, sheltered view of life. After graduating after my Junior year, I jumped into Indiana University where I quickly realized how sheltered my life had been!Thinking I would pursue a Master's, my career took an unexpected turn. Instead of resigning, which I attempted, my dad left...and turned the business over to me. Thinking I could do anything because I was 25, arrogant, and prideful, I was about to experience reality. Within months, the business failed, and I went through a dark, suicidal depression. Nearly a year later, a new business was born from the ashes, and nearly 12 years later that business was sold. I then spent 12 years in private equity. It was during my years running the family business and in private equity that I grew passionate about leadership--healthy, flourishing leadership. Over the last 25 years, I trained, facilitated, coached, and led leaders, leadership teams, and boards all over the world. I wanted each leader to become the best possible version of themselves so they would do the same for the team members and organizations they led. I picked up training and certifications in nearly 20 leadership, personality, and team-building assessments, and I also picked up an MBA along the way.In 2021, I finally jumped "all in" into my own business, after being told by many whom I had worked with over the years that I needed to do this. Little did they know, I had actually felt a tug on my heart--a calling--to speak, train, and facilitate when I was a teenager.Have a question for a guest or host? Welcome to Episode 4 of the Lowth Entrepreneurship Center Bonus Series! If you enjoy this show, subscribe to this podcast for weekly episodes.Other discussion areas:-how Bali played a role in creating this company-lessons learned from her first event to now-how she has expanded, and tips for your expansion-arrangements for beginnersMeet Holland: My journey with flowers started from a young age when, like most young girls, I would go outside, pick weeds, and arrange them in vases around my house. As I grew, I always loved to create arts and crafts, and to this day, I love a good DIY project. I decided I was at a block in my career with what I wanted to do, so like most logical people I jumped on a plane and headed to Bali to figure things out. Well, boom, I was there for 4 months, and while exploring the beautiful island of the gods, I rediscovered my passion for flowers and realized this is what I was meant to do. However, I didn't just want to be a florist; I wanted to teach others how to arrange flowers and bring them the same joy that it brings me. Low and behold, The Roaming Petal was born. Here we are today, bringing floral workshops to people's homes and events, and I couldn't be happier. About The Roaming Petal:We bring educational, fun, and healing floral design workshops right to your home or event. S20 Ep 11From Ideas to Assets: A Legal Perspective on AI, Innovation, and Startups with Brent Britton

Lanci kicks off the final season of the year with his Advisor, Brent Britton, in his Incubator Program. What do the two discuss? Advice for starting and advice for exitingIs the way you use AI setting you up for a copyright lawsuit? Why market validation needs to be done before your entrepreneurial enterprise🎧Tune in for the full show 🎧Meet Britton: I help innovators, scientists, and engineers turn ideas into assets. I practice intellectual property and corporate law. Every few years or so, I teach college classes in creative problem-solving and entrepreneurship. In rare cases, I join startups as a founder.I write occasionally and speak frequently. I promote the progress of science and the useful arts. Just like the Framers intended. I once founded a law firm in San Francisco called Britton Silberman & Cervantez. We had a monthly gathering called "ex parte." Then we sold it.I am admitted to practice law in California (1994), New York (2004), and Florida (2005). All this means is I've passed 42 hours of bar exams. Some seemingly well-intentioned folks routinely inform me that I am among the "Best Lawyers in America" and "Florida's Legal Elite" and "Martindale Hubbell rated AV-preeminent" but I'm not entirely sure any of that is terribly meaningful.I hold degrees from the University of Maine, the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Boston University School of Law. They are approximately a million years old.Have a question for a guest or host? Want to become a guest or show partner? Let's chat! Some areas of discussion include:Sense of arrivalPerception your name bringsBalancing both sides Valuing the silence before the sound“The Tao of Podcasting”Meet Charlie: I am Co-founder of Podville Media, an HD video and audio media production studio located in Washington, DC. Podville Media began as Podcast Village, in a co-working office in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I had loved public speaking and acting in school and was tremendously excited about podcasting and what it could mean for communications and storytelling. As a result of my early experience, I am co-author of “Podcasting Made Simple” (on Amazon, but largely outdated due to software and hardware developments. However you can see my early podcast sketches in the book!).Prior to Podville Media, I spent over 25 years in the DC/MD/VA commercial real estate market, most notably as a team member for planning, permitting, building and managing the two courses at Queenstown Harbor Golf, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Additionally, I served as president of both the Maryland Tourism Council and the National Golf Course Owner’s Association. Podville has been up and sprinting now for over five years, and in 2023 we won three Tellys (the Tellys are in their 44th year) and have a show, Rap Stories, in the number one spot on Apple for podcasts in the music category. S20 Ep 5Lose Fat While Eating The Foods You LOVE with Brooke Sobh

Lanci has his Co-Host back for their 2nd episode together! You may recognize this guest from her lights-out testimonial on A Mental Health Break. Brooke Sobh and Co-Host Dr. Carlos Garcia are delivering this episode from CRES in Tampa.Check out Sobh's episode on A Mental Health Break here: https://amentalhealthbreak.buzzsprout.com/743867/13506282-nutrition-dieting-and-motherhood-with-brooke-sobhCheck out the 1st Co-Host Interview with Lanci and Garcia interviewing Dr. Shane Smith here: https://thatentrepreneurshow.buzzsprout.com/737252/13681803-it-is-never-to-late-too-start-with-dr-shane-smithMeet Brooke Sobh: I had always been very thin growing up. This was not because “my metabolism was high”, this was because I pretty much dieted my whole life. I did every sport you could think of growing up and eventually got into running. The more I ran, the more weight I lost. It got to a point where I was 100 lbs. soaking wet, but still running 10 miles a day (everyday!) and barely eating. This worked for almost 8 years, until it didn’t. After college, I started gaining weight very quickly, despite how much I was running or how little I was eating. I was freaked out! I kept asking myself, “what is going on?! This is so weird, I’m doing everything right!”. I was miserable, exhausted, puffy, tired, hungry, etc. I didn’t know what to do or where to go from here. If you’re here reading this, you might relate. In 2018 I looked into reverse dieting and macro counting and read/listened to everything I could get my hands on to learn what was going on with my body. Eventually, I realized my metabolism had tanked and I needed to eat more and workout less. Who would have thought? This was totally against what society tells us! Within a year, I was able to lose 20 lbs. while eating more and working out less. It was a slow and steady process of gradually increasing calories but thankfully I’m finally at a happy place and have been here for 6 years now (with a few babies in between). Now, I feel amazing, I eat what I want, I’m not exhausted and I have all the energy in the world.I look back now and I am so thankful I had to go through this process because I want to help as many women as I can get out of this dieting rut!!If you feel like you’re undereating or over exercising but gaining weight, don’t worry.. you’re not broken and there is hope. S20 Ep 4Make Your Journey Less Rocky with Crystal Webster

When my daughter, Madelyn Elizabeth, was born May 19th, 2010 and then died in my arms just a few hours later I KNEW that this angel was special {I’m a little biased, I know}. She touched so many lives during her very brief one…I just didn’t know the right outlet to carry on her life, love, and legacy...It took over 300 episodes, but the show is finally sitting down with an experienced Founder from Kansas! Crystal (Castrop) Webster delivers a lights-out show and touches on:How to Cold NetworkThat moment when she dropped everything and went “150% into Solace”What she likes best about being in the mental health spaceSharing lessons learned from 14+ years in business Lessons from starting as a Theater major, transitioning to Tax Accounting for a safer job field post-graduation - to R/E Residential- to SolaceBe sure to subscribe to the podcast for the next episode and check us out on social media @ThatEntrepreneurShow on all platforms....I spent the next 5 years grieving her death, healing my heart, and working to bring my Madelyn the siblings she deserved. To this day, Madelyn remains an only child. In 2015, during an uncommon moment of enlightenment, the concept of Sharing Solace hit me like a bolt of lightning. The only way to describe it is that Madelyn knew I was ready to begin to heal - and help others do the same - so she sent the idea to me herself.I realized the gifts I received when Maddie was born - the gifts that once brought me so much comfort - were now bringing back he pain of losing her. I couldn’t keep seeing them every day and have a healthy mind {that realization in and of itself provided its own source of grief and guilt}. These gifts were not given to me to be put in a box in the back of a closet - but that’s where they sat.I couldn’t give these gifts away because many were personalized. I also couldn’t just throw them away because of the sentimental attachment. That birthed the concept of the two-piece token system: A piece to keep your sentimental memories with you always and a piece to symbolically release that ‘heavy on your heart’ grief.Sharing Solace officially launched May 19, 2018 - Madelyn Elizabeth’s would-be 8th birthday. I hope we’ve made Miss Maddie proud!Music Credits:Adventure by MusicbyAden | https://soundcloud.com/musicbyadenHappy | https://soundcloud.com/morning-kuliSend us Fan MailSupport the showEnjoy the show! S19 Ep 17A $50MM Sale for the Godfather of Cheese with Miguel Leal

This guest sold his business for $50mil to the global company Sigma Alimentos. This company still uses, and used, his recipes to won the 2020 World Championship Cheese Contest with his "flagship cotija cheese."Miguel Leal is widely regarded as the “Godfather of Mexican Cheese” in the United States, Miguel Leal’s story humbly began at a cheese factory in his native Mexico as a teenager. When he was invited to travel to the United States as an apprentice, he jumped at the chance. One of six children raised in poverty after the tragic death of his father in an earthquake, Leal arrived in Wisconsin without money and speaking little English. As an illegal immigrant, he had no choice but to make a cardboard bed on the factory’s boiler room floor. He was among the first to recognize that the growing number of Latinx immigrants in the U.S. meant there would be a market for specialty Mexican cheeses, and eventually partnered with a master cheesemaker from Wisconsin to work with the Amish in Ohio to produce and hand-sell 60-pound wheels of cotija cheese in the Chicago metro area. The skyrocketing demand for his cheese led Leal to establish his own company, Mexican Cheese Producers, Inc. in 1994. He eventually constructed a state-of- the-art production plant in Darlington, Wisconsin—a prime location with access to the finest quality milk in the country. There, he continued to perfect recipes for a variety of Mexican cheeses and took out patents for the machines used to produce them.
