On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to conversate on several Buffalo Bills topics, including counting down Patrick's list of the top 20 Buffalo Bills non first round draft picks of the modern era.Through interest and plenty of boredom, Patrick spent several hours going through every year of the Bills draft history and coming up with his power rankings of the best players that weren't taken in the first round. It's important to note that by modern era that means anytime past 1970 after the NFL and AFL merged. That disqualified a handful of 1960's draft picks that would've easily been on and likely near the top of the list, such as Butch Byrd, Mike Stratton, Tom Sestak and Billy Shaw.Patrick counts down his list with explanations for each and spoiler alert---there's three current Buffalo Bills players on the list. As you'd expect Joe has plenty to say about several of the players and especially the order Patrick has them ranked in. It's another edition of The Podbag on today's Talking Buffalo and Patrick Moran is responding to several comments, questions and takes submitted by listeners including a heavy dose of Buffalo Bills draft topics.With a million mock drafts and opinions out there, someone asks Patrick to identity five things as it pertains to the Bills draft that he's actually feeling confident about. He comes up with five, including the likelihood that Brandon Beane is going to have to move up from pick No. 30 if his target is one of the two most talked about defensive tackles in the draft that feel like perfect fits for the Bills, Derrick Harmon and Kenneth Grant. He also expresses confidence the Bills are going to a wide receiver among their first three picks after feeling the complete opposite during this entire process while thinking running back won't be addressed much if at all next week.Patrick also responds to a take that it feels like 2022 all over again where the Bills feel pigeonholed into taking a cornerback first, such as the case with Kaiir Elam a few years ago. In fact, the guys go out of their way to praise Brandon Beane and staff and what appears to be a really solid offseason balance of locking up core players for the long term while investing free agent dollars in areas of need, particularly on the defensive line. The Bills are poised to be in the mix for an AFC championship yet again this season and for good reason---it's a very well put together roster with a lot of strengths, none so more than the MVP quarterback.However, that doesn't mean this is roster without flaws or least question marks around it and both Patrick and Matt put on their critically objective hats and discuss several of them, including what appears to be a pretty big leap of faith that Keon Coleman will grow into a very good wide receiver in his second year, the boundary cornerback position looking razor thin (again, as things stand) and a safety room that least Patrick isn't ready to start believing in.They also wonder how much, if at all the James Cook contract situation could be an issue come training camp in July and if it'll resolve itself or become a New York Jets 2024 Haasan Reddick situation in the worse case. As things stand Dane Jackson would be in line to start alongside Christian Benford and it's hard to fathom Bills brass considering that a Plan A. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran kicks off the first of what will be a handful of Buffalo Bills full seven round mock drafts over the next few weeks, and enlists David Tilton from Cover 1 for guidance and expertise.Depending on what you’re trying to get from them, mock drafts can be incredibly useful or absolutely useless. The guys explain that rather that worrying about how the accuracy and predictive nature of mock drafts, use it as an “exercise” to learn about trends, how depth at various positions are deeper than others and just a general opportunity to learn about more prospects.They then spend some time talking about many of the Bills draft needs, both primary and secondary with David discussing some of the players he has an eye on before the mock begins, including two defensive tackles and a corner. Patrick goes over a bunch of potential trade up scenarios over the first few rounds according to the latest draft value chart before the mock is up and running.Once the mock gets going David finds himself in a bind with the 30th overall pick over taking defensive tackle Derrick Harmon or cornerback Trey Amos. Ultimately David takes the guy he was highest on entering the mock and goes defense with the next two picks as well.There is one trade that sees Buffalo trade both their fourths to get into the late third round and nab a receiver the Bills apparently are interested in “real life”, Isaiah Bond. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren (SB Nation) for their weekly chat with the focus today on a handful of sneaky positional draft needs for the Buffalo Bills in addition to a handful of interesting potential Buffalo trade up options and where packaging some picks can get them up to.Cornerback, edge rusher and defensive tackle are three big needs and (very) likely to be addressed early in the draft—possibly even their first three selections. However, there’s other positions on this team that could definitely use some reinforcing with both this season and the future in mind. The guys talk about why tight end could be a little more of a priority than most think despite already having both Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox on the team. Also, an interior lineman doesn’t have a real path to playing time as a rookie but that doesn’t mean a solid mid round prospect can’t become impactful as soon as 2026. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran offers plenty of live reaction from day one of the NFL free agency tampering period as it pertains both to the Buffalo Bills and around the NFL.The Bills made their first move of free agency on Monday on offense, inking former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Josh Palmer to a three-year deal worth a reported $36 million. They followed that up by inking defensive lineman Michael Hoecht to a three-year deal worth a reported $24 million.Palmer's stats with the Chargers have been pretty pedestrian throughout his four year career, catching 39 passes for 584 yards and a touchdown last year. While his general stats are hardly impressive Patrick elaborates on why he was calling for this signing literally as recently as yesterday's show, explaining how plenty of metrics demonstrate that he's the type of receiver the Bills lack and could really use right now in this offense that was historical.As far Hoecht, Patrick admits to not knowing much at all about him but runs off some facts for him and feels better about the addition after seeing some plugged in Bills content creators having been supportive of the signing before free agency started.Patrick also has thoughts on while everyone wants the Bills to add star players and they very well still may, it was their role players and some of those contributions that were a major reason Buffalo had such a great season in 2024, saying Palmer's presence could be along the lines of great contributors from last year like Ty Johnson, Mack Hollins, Alec Anderson, Dorian Williams and others.Patrick also talks about what he's happy and not happy about in regards to where the Bills stand early on in free agency---where he thinks the Bills should've went with some decisions and still may going forward. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander (Two in the Box) to discuss the respective general managers of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, Brandon Beane and Kevyn Adams finding themselves with the pressure cranked up to get things done in the coming weeks for varying reasons.It doesn't take a genius general manager or any sort of football guy to watch the Super Bowl and realize the true formula for success against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs is to create pressure with a four man rush with a dominant defensive line. Sure, the Bills have been within a field goal of the Chiefs in the past two playoffs but have fallen short for a handful of reasons, none so more than their inability to get defensive stops and pressure on Mahomes. The guys talk about several options out there in the coming weeks for Beane and the Bills and the intense pressure he's probably feeling to take a big swing at edge and/or interior defensive line, whether it's via trade or prominent free agent(s).As for the Sabres, they're cellar dwelling 54 games into the season as the league shuts down for two weeks for the 4 Nations Face Off. Chris has several thoughts on what Adams can and should do during this time to try and make a big move to help his team, assuming of course he remains on as general manager. If he does the NHL trade deadline is March 7th and you have to assume he'll do at least something.
