On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran takes all 32 NFL teams, puts them all into seven tiers and focuses on which grouping the Buffalo Bills most likely belong in.As opposed to taking each team and "power ranking" them No. 1-32, this exercise leads to seven tiers being created: Super Bowl favorites, Legit Super Bowl Contenders, Playoff Near Locks, Playoff Top Contenders, Could Surprise, Nah and 2025 No. 1 Pick Contenders. Patrick first explains why he prefers to tiers to complete numerical order--being able to place multiple teams on the same level.From there we start at the bottom tier and work our way up. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by friend and recurring guest Anthony Marino to discuss several topics, including the team's head scratching signing of former decorated wrestler Gabe Steveson and speculating if running back James Cook is capable of rushing for 1,500 yards.Cook ran for 1,122 for Buffalo last year despite seemingly having a quick leash for a lot of the early part of the season. No Buffalo Bills running back has rushed for at least 1,500 yards since OJ Simpson all the way back in 1976. That said, maybe the accomplishment isn't as far fetched as it seems. Cook pretty much established himself as one of the best backs in the league last year, finishing fourth in the NFL and rushing and running for 1,500 yards isn't unprecedented in recent years. Five active backs have done a total of seven times over the past five years. The guys spend some time considering if Cook has the ability and opportunity to join that club in this 2024 Bills offense.Also, the Bills signed former Olympic wrestler and WWE "superstar" Gabe Steveson last week. It's interesting on several levels considering Stevenson has literally never played organized football in his life. There's also former legal issues with Stevenson that makes the move a head scratcher if not straight-up controversial. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, the Buffalo Bills will have at least a little more spending money freed up to potentially spend come June 1st in a few days, and Patrick Moran has a list of several potential roster addition candidates to discuss.The Bills still don't have a lot of cap room even once they they get the money saved by cutting Tre White with a post-June 1st designation earlier this offseason, but it does at least open up the door to be a little more flexible and add an able player or two to the mix. Buffalo signed defensive end Leonard Floyd on June 6 last year and he paid huge dividend and while that expectation is definitely not there this time around, there's a few holes on the depth of this roster that could use some polishing.Patrick focuses on three of them: offensive guard, edge rusher and cornerback and makes a case why Brandon Beane should consider adding to at least one of these position groups if not more before training camp begins. That said, it'd be naive to think this roster doesn't have it's fair share of question marks as well as some players being doubted that got plenty to prove. Among them discussed by Patrick and Anthony is Von Miller, who needs to prove if he has any chance of staying with the Bills beyond 2024 that he's not washed up and over the hill at 35 years old. Also, Taylor Rapp needs to prove that he's the player we saw at the end of last season, particularly in Miami if he's going to hold off second-round pick Cole Bishop and the starting strong safety job for a sustained among of time. Meanwhile, Kaiir Elam is highly unlikely to be a starter but will surely get an opportunity at some point--he needs to prove he's not officially a first-round bust.Also, Connor McGovern needs to prove he's capable of successfully moving over from guard to center if h doesn't want a fifth-round rookie center staring over his shoulder and despite being fourth in the NFL in rushing and seventh in the league in total yards from scrimmage last year, James Cook needs to prove he can be trusted to hold on to the football in the passing game and keep the reps Ty Johnson and fourth-round rookie Ray Davis could end up taking from him.That plus the guys talk a little Matt Milano concern, what sport they'd pick to be a star athlete in if they had their choice, the weekly "Finish the Sentence" segment and much more. Perfectly understandable, but this Bills roster is chockfull of some young talent that is likely still ascending that at least on some levels simply fly under the radar.The guys talk about some of them, including Dawson Knox, who saw his production decline last year between a wrist injury and the emergence of rookie first-round pick Dalton Kincaid. That doesn't mean people should be sleeping on Knox's potential in this offense though. This is a guy who caught nearly 50 passes for over 500 yards in both 2021 and 2022 with 15 touchdowns during that span. He's also been good in the playoffs.Also, people tend to think of Rasul Douglas first when it comes to excellent Bills cornerbacks, but Christian Benford was (very) quietly graded by PFF among the very best corners in the NFL last season. It's a rare sharp left turn from Buffalo sports talk on Talking Buffalo today as Patrick Moran reveals his wing rankings and tiers for 2024 and is joined by Luke and Tom from the Buffalo Wing Coalition for their thoughts and analysis in a conversation recorded live at Sonny Red's in Lackawanna.Ranking and placing wings into tiers is something Patrick's done at least a handful of times in recent years although it's been 18 months since he's done it last. It was a fun exercise that began in 2016 not long after moving to Florida for what would become five years. On his latest list is 92 different wing spots throughout Western New York (although a small handful of them have recently closed shop) and instead of ranking them 1 through 92 he has them broken up into seven tiers: Waiver Wire, Roster Bubble, Depth Chart, Solid Starters, All-Pro, Elite and of course the four-spot Mt. Rushmore.While these charts are the opinions of Patrick alone, he's joined by two of the guys from the Buffalo Wing Coalition for their insight. The Buffalo Wing Coalition has grown significantly in recent years and these guys do an outstanding job of highlighting one of the region's greatest treasures. It's the weekly Podbag on today's Talking Buffalo, the episode where fans control the topics with their takes and questions for Patrick Moran to reply too, focused (as usual) heavily on the Buffalo Bills.One question in particular that got Patrick thinking was a question asking who's going to be the Bills player that has one of those "wow" seasons you didn't see coming, referencing Terrell Bernard as that guy last year. But last year's defense wasn't without cracks and the guys talk about some of those issues, including the unit's failure to close out games with a (very) late lead three times, some awful injury luck and a penchant for imploding in games the team didn't win.They spend a good chunk of this show explaining some factors that could lead to the defense being better this season, even if not statistically. The Bills record was certainly better from that point on, but was the offense really more efficient? Patrick looked into some statistics and found trends the guys talk about, including a big change in time of possession, the needing to continuing to move towards running the football more, no singular lion's share of passing targets and significant upticks for two weapons. They also talk about a few things that were perceived as big changes but really werent---such as Josh Allen's turnovers and rushing attempts/yards.Also, John Murphy is retiring from being the radio voice of the Buffalo Bills after 35 years, including the past 19 as the team's play-by-play guy. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined in studio by longtime friend and recurring guest Tone Pucks to discuss a potentially effective Bills free agent singing flying under the radar, two potential breakout candidates this season for the Bills in addition to plenty of Buffalo Sabres talk.Chase Claypool was the noticeable name that signed with the Bills late last week, a move that Tone calls out Patrick for his negative overreaction, but the addition of Dawuane Smoot mostly slid the cracks and/or was quickly dismissed by many as non-relevant news. Tone advises that shouldn't be the case, pointing out the structure of his contract shows it's highly likely Smoot's going to be part of this roster and defensive end rotation. The guys talk about that very possibly be a good thing considering Smoot had four consecutive seasons of at least six sacks before being slowed down last year in recovering from a torn achilles. Can Smoot be this year's version of Leonard Floyd?After the Smoot section Patrick gets into two incoming second-year players he may be higher than most; wide receiver Justin Shorter and linebacker Dorian Williams. In the case of Shorter, Brandon Beane's excellent day three draft record is pointed out as well Shorter never getting going last year after a hamstring injury. Williams was a different story---we saw his athleticism immediately but it was apparent that mental gaffes on assignments led him to Sean McDermott's dog house, so much so that he mostly watched from the sidelines as AJ Klein got helplessly torched by Travis Kelce in the playoffs. Patrick feels confident that if Williams grows on the mental side of things in year two that he could carve himself out a significant role in this defense and on this roster, even if not as a starter.They also talk about what the Sabres may do with UPL's next contract, even more Jeff Skinner talk, Tone snubs Patrick's birthday and much more. On today's Talking Buffalo, it's another edition of The Podbag---the episode where the audience controls the narrative and Patrick Moran is answering questions and reading takes sent it from listeners and viewers of the show, mostly focused around the ongoing Buffalo Bills offseason.The Bills lost a ton of veteran players and leaders this offseason, particularly Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Tre White, Mitch Morse and Stefon Diggs. This coupled with their inability to get past the AFC divisional round the past three years has created a strong national perception, at least among media and fans that Buffalo's Super Bowl window is closing if not closed for this regime. As one fan of the show points out, it's a load of crap and uses multiple examples of great quarterbacks winning Super Bowl far older than Josh Allen currently is. Patrick talks about agreeing that the Bills window to win a championship with this core is still very much doable but does admit that it won't get any seemingly easier than it was the past handful of seasons, when Buffalo put themselves in great position to get it done.There's several other interesting submissions this week, including a more predominant running game on the way, someone locked in on the development of second-year linebacker Dorian Williams, Sean McDermott's storied history of developing linebackers and Diggs' attitude being gone a positive for the Bills. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is really starting to wonder if the Buffalo Bills are having a crisis of identity with their offense based on recent decisions and it's up to friend and recurring guest Anthony Marino to convince him it's not headed toward a downward spiral.it's been well documented in conversation, data and film study that Bills quarterback Josh Allen has enjoyed the majority of his success working the passing game with smaller receivers who excel at separation and getting open quickly as opposed to bigger, physical lumbering receivers who excel more in traffic and catching contested balls. General manager Brandon Beane talked about this just a week or so before the NFL draft, yet the Bills appear to be getting away from what their standard of receiver has been, first drafting Keon Coleman in the second round and then signing free agent wide receiver Chase Claypool last Friday.Patrick absolutely hates the Claypool signing and immediately overreacted on social media when it happened, something Anthony immediately called him out on. At any rate, the guys have a pretty detailed discussion over what they think this Bills offense is trying to be. Does factors like drafting a big guy like Keon Coleman over a Stefon Diggs/Khalil Shakir type like Ladd McConkey, and cutting Mitch Morse to move a much bigger Connor McGovern over to center, or drafting bowling ball style running back Ray Davis in the fourth round symbolize that Sean McDermott is looking for the Bills to be more physical and methodical with their offense as opposed to speedy and explosive?It certainly feels that way. Also, there's no use crying over spilled milk but do the guys think the team is going to rue trading Diggs instead of finding a way to make things work for one more year and does the departure of Diggs and not doing anything of note other than a draft to replace him put a lot of instant pressure on Coleman?What about the notion that Sean McDermott doesn't care about the offense as much as the defense, despite the fact the Bills have now drafted a pass catcher with their first pick in the past two drafts. In the end he created a power ranking for all 32 teams in addition to putting them in six separate tiers---as the difference between being ranked 13th to 20th feels a lot more distant than it actually is. In compiling the list he took into account their current talent, projected talent going forward and what teams he'd be willing to trade the Buffalo wide receiver room for.Patrick's assessment concludes that the Bills top four of Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Mack Hollins slides into the fifth of six tiers and more specifically ranks just 25th out of 32 teams. The guys have a conversation about the Bills group, where they slot in on the chart and how much more could they realistically rise in the reasonably near future.Also, Tim Graham of The Athletic recently posted a fascinating story about the Pegula's, including the revelation that Kim Pegula is now legally incapacitated with Terry as the guardian in addition to Terry's daughter Laura playing a much more prominent role in the the Bills and Buffalo Sabres organization than almost anyone knew about. Today it's almost entirely about the Sabres. Following a 13th consecutive season of missing the playoffs, not only an extension of their own record but tying the New York Jets for the longest in major pro sports, Terry Pegula fired Don Granato and within a week Ruff was hired to once again take over. The guys talk about if have a problem with a wider coaching net not being cast before landing on Ruff as well as how much of the hire is about hockey and how much to perhaps help win back fans.There's also plenty to talk about with the team in general. Despite nearly everyone saying it's not going to happen, Tone is still convinced that the Sabres are going to end up getting rid of Jeff Skinner this summer, whether that comes through buy out or a trade and even uses an interesting Bills situation as a baseline for comparison. On this rare weekend episode of Talking Buffalo, night two of the NFL draft is in the books and Patrick Moran's streaming live just minutes after, offering instant reaction to what Buffalo added to it's roster in rounds two and three.The Bills stuck to the board with the first pick of round two and went with the 6-foot-4 big receiver from Florida State. Coleman 658 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns with the Seminoles last year and Patrick's got plenty thoughts on him, including loving the facts they'll be no "what ifs" with who the Bills wanted at receiver. Just as they could've taken Xavier Worthy or Xavier Legette on night one, Beane could've taken any receiver he wanted to begin the second round and landed on Coleman. Patrick goes through some Coleman's biggest strengths (size, competitive, run blocking) and weaknesses (straight line speed, separation skills) and what his fit on this team should be.No trade up with their second of two second round picks either as Buffalo selected safety Cole Bishop of Utah, marking the second consecutive year Buffalo's plugged a prospect early from there (Dalton Kincaid). Patrick has thoughts on him, warning that fans shouldn't expect Bishop to be a plug-and-play starter but he's a ferocious, fearless and athletic safety that has impact starter potential and reminds him plenty of a young Jordan Poyer.With their last pick of the night, they stood pat at No. 95 in round three and selected Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter. On this special episode of Talking Buffalo, the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is in the books and Patrick Moran is up (very) late to provide instant reaction to the Buffalo Bills trading back not once, but twice near the end of the first round and leaving Thursday night without a pick.The Bills traded down from 28 to 32 with Kansas City, allowing them to grab Xavier Worthy. They they traded down from the last pick of round one to the first of round two with Carolina, allowing the Packers to go get Xavier Legette. Obviously, Patrick's got a lot of thoughts, admittedly confused as they're in real time just minutes after the round ended.Patrick also spends some time going over some of the things he was most surprised by---including six of the first 12 picks being quarterbacks and the first 14 picks being all offensive players. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, the NFL Draft has finally arrived and Patrick Moran is making his final Buffalo Bills predictions with analysis of some possible scenarios just hours before the real thing is set to begin.After spending weeks if not months believing that a non-wide receiver was very much in play with Buffalo's first pick depending on how things fell, Patrick's heard enough to now believe it's a receiver no matter what theme inside the walls at One Bills Drive. That makes the question not if the Bills will take a wide receiver in the first round, but rather which one and at what point. Patrick lays out scenarios that could have them go as high as Tennessee at seven to go get Rome Odunze, the mid-to-late teens to fish out Brian Thomas Jr. or even just a few spots to ensure one of the tier of other guys they like to be available.In fact, Patrick lays out his prediction that the Bills ultimately move up three spots with the Green Bay Packers to get the wide receiver he thinks is their best fit, Xavier Legette over Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell. In his quick four-round mock Patrick explains why his choice would be Legette and in fact it's just the first of two trades he makes on behalf of Brandon Beane. After being rejected in a trade-up offer in the second round Patrick stands pat and explains why safety Kamren Kinchens is the perfect Bills pick there, even if PFF thinks the selection stinks. There's depth to be had all over the roster for sure but receiver feels like the one glaring need going into this draft. That puts many things in play---ranging from going into the top 10 to land Rome Odunze, moving into the middle of the first-round to snag Brian Thomas Jr., a moderate trade up or trade back to take a receiver first, or to not address it all with the first pick, seeing there's a lot of day two talent at the position. The guys offer predictions on how it's addressed, including Patrick being convinced the possibility of Brandon Beane trading for a veteran bona fide number one receiver being very much real despite the salary cap challenges. In fact, in three "bold" prediction scenarios he sees the Bills moving up from 28 to 17, but not for a receiver. Patrick has eight guys likely to be selected in the second to fifth round range that he's pretty high and thinks could be a great fit for Buffalo. The list includes a pair of guys in the trenches that could play meaningful snaps right away, two wide receivers that could contribute and potentially even start by season's end and a pair of prospects from the team Patrick's a big fan of, Notre Dame.Turning to the Sabres, Patrick expresses his thoughts on the team announcing Granato's dismissal the morning following their season finale in Tampa the night before. For Aaron, how much does that raise the likelihood that the Bills have to go receiver first? Neither Patrick nor Anthony consider it feasible to trade all the way up in the draft to target a non-receiver such as offensive tackle Joe Alt or edge rusher Dallas Turner. Instead, Anthony lists five guys that are considered realistic for the Bills, whether that's staying pat at 28 and having a guy fall to them or to make a modest move up--meaning no higher than the very late teens or early twenties.The list includes two edge rushers, an interior defensive lineman, a defensive back and interior offensive lineman. To reiterate, both guys predict and prefer wide receiver to be the spot but with the position being rich in depth, there's certainly a possibility the Bills look elsewhere before turning their attention to a pass catcher.After Anthony's list, Patrick adds three more of his own with his rationale behind the possibilities. In those regards as well many others, it's been a huge disappointment. The guys discuss how much Granato, the current sixth-longest tenured head coach in the NHL deserves the blame for another faceplant of a regular season campaign---one that saw Buffalo got from third in the NHL in goals scored last year to 21st this year, on the heels of a power play ranked 29th in the league. Early sleepwalks to start games were a huge problem this season, as evidenced by the 29 times Buffalo's given up two or more goals in the first period and just a 7-21-1 record in those games. That's a direct indictment on Granato not having his team ready to play coming out of the locker room. There's that, a seemingly big lack of accountability and a season-long inability to go on any sort of sustained positive run.Of course, Granato deserving to get fired and it actually happening are two completely different things. Do Patrick and Tony have confidence in Terry Pegula to fire Granato when the season ends next week, even if he has to eat an entire Granato extension before it actually kicks in? Spoiler alert---not likely.They also spend time talking Bills, even though Tone is completely disengaged from all the Stefon Diggs drama at this point. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran disputes any (mostly) national narrative that the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl window has formally closed, but discusses how and why there are plenty of reasons to proceed with caution.Critics and haters alike both nationally and surely some locally have written off the Bills completely after a handful of AFC divisional round face plants coupled with significance player personnel losses over the offseason. Patrick explains why he thinks that foolish on several reasons, ranging of course primarily because of a quarterback as capable of anyone in the sport and a nucleus of teammates that are still ascending and haven't hit their ceiling yet, plus plenty of guys with leadership material to fill voids such as Von Miller, Taron Johnson, Dion Dawkins and Dawson Knox among others.That said, it's fair to argue the Bills have blown incredible chances over the past three years and may not be gifted another opportunity as golden anytime soon. The AFC is stacked and it certainly appears you can add Houston to that mix as well, not to mention Joe Burrow returning to a Bengals team that has owned the Bills over the past two years and of course, back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City that will probably have a significantly better offense than they did last year. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's the third weekly Buffalo Bills mock draft in a series leading up to the actual NFL draft starting on April 25th and for this one Patrick Moran is joined by talented analyst Anthony Prohaska of Cover 1 in a mock that features not one, but two trades with the Washington Commanders.Of course the Bills fan base and quite possibly the team itself is reeling from the trade of star receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. While many are outraged and have seemingly turned on Diggs since the trade in light of learning more about the rocky relationship between he and Josh Allen, Anthony spends time speaking highly of Diggs and his elite worth ethic, even throwing in a Kobe Bryant comparison.The guys fire up the mock draft and pause at several points, highlighting potential move up spots and ballpark costs to do it. Despite several opportunities, Anthony, playing Bills GM and making the picks ultimately not only decides against trading up, but actually ends up moving back from 28 to 36 after a trade with Washington that nets the Bills a third-round pick. Anthony uses the Bills first pick to take a lightning fast receiver and again passes on the chance to move up in round two, standing pat and coming back with another receiver many would consider borderline shocking to still be on the board.Anthony goes interior defensive line with the Bills third round pick before bolstering the offensive line and cornerback room with a pair of fourth rounders. They go safety with their first fifth-round pick before executing a trade up, with Washington again to snag a guard Anthony's high on. They finish off with an edge rusher with their last fifth rounder and a running back project in round seven.This was not only a great mock draft to follow along to, but Anthony does an amazing job at informing and educating Bills fans of several prospects. On this episode of Talking Buffalo streamed live, Patrick Moran is joined by friend and recurring guest Tone Pucks for a plethora of reactions following the Buffalo Bills shocking trade of Stefon Diggs to Houston in early April, discussed objectively from all angles. It was widely assumed that at least in part because of his contract, Diggs would remain in Buffalo for 2024 before a potential out for Buffalo in 2025. Instead, not only did the Bills trade Diggs along with a 2024 sixth and 2025 fifth round pick to Houston for a 2025 second, they did so without it being a post-June 1 designation, meaning the Bills have decided to eat the entirety of his $31 million in dead cap this season instead of spreading it out over two years. The guys obviously have plenty to react to, including the timing of the trade, salary cap ramifications and how things got to the point where it feels the Bills became desperate to get him off their team. They also discuss if Diggs demanded a trade before today, how much if at all has his skill set eroded and in some ways is this move a form of addition by subtraction.They also discuss how the Bills will likely replace him including the now very real option of moving up in the draft to get a top receiver. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's the second of five weekly Buffalo Bills full seven round mock drafts leading up to the actual NFL draft starting April 25th and this time Patrick Moran is doing his solo, outlining realistic trade up and down scenarios and ultimately pulling the trigger on two himself.Before he gets into what'll be his lone solo mock, Patrick spends some time talking about what his goals are coming in---including help in the trenches very early, a receiver with one of the first two picks and some safety help early on day three. With the NFL changing the kickoff rule the expectations are teams will be more locked in on special teams skill, and that's no different with the Bills in this mock.He also lists three candidates that could be realistically trading up for, a few non-receivers definitely worth taking with the No. 28 overall pick, a couple of worthy wide receivers there as well as a handful of great candidates if the Bills are to trade down. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran has discovered information on several aspects of the PSL and season ticket costs and policies with the new Stadium as opposed to just speculation and shares what he's learned after talking to multiple sources, demonstrating that at least some of the rumors out there are myths.Contrary to what a lot of people have said or suggested, it's not "buy your PSL now or miss out and go to the back of the line." Patrick explains how that's working with group and also shares what he's learned about the financing of PSL's, including how much of a deposit needs to put down when purchasing them and when the cutoff balance pay date is for these loans, which for the record are interest-free.Patrick also provides details of what's being sold and shown to perspective PSL buyers right now, including three club level areas that are going for $50k, $20k and $15k respectively. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to discuss if the standard for success is too relaxed when it comes to Buffalo professional sports teams, and Joe also goes on (multiple) tirades over Buffalo Bills & Sabres owner Terry Pegula's unwillingness to speak publicly.Whether they deliver or not, other markets like Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, New York City, etc. have a mentality among fans and media that if you're not playing for championships then your season is a failure. That doesn't appear to be the case, at least not to Patrick in Buffalo. To him the standard in this market has been to make the playoffs, with maybe the goal posts moved to winning divisional titles in order for it to be evaluated as a successful campaign. Patrick doesn't buy it and thinks the standards the players and coaches are held to should be championship game appearances. Guys like Ed Oliver and Stefon Diggs, who've been great in the regular season seem to save their worst performances of the season for elimination game losses, which doesn't seem to carry the weight here it would in other markets.As far as Pegula rarely ever speaking publicly and never about the performances of the teams he owns, it continues to have Joe incensed and that's apparent on today's show. He also has plenty to say about a local media that he feels doesn't hold the owner nearly accountable for it either.
