Injuries and possibly underwhelming play led Brandon Beane to sign two veterans this week (Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain) in addition to reportedly working out Corey Davis, a former fifth overall pick in 2017. The guys discuss what they're currently thinking at the position, and end up revisiting the Stefon Diggs trade for the 10,000 time.Also, Injuries happen to key players on teams every season and as a result depth guys need to be prepared to step up. Of course, every player on the 53-man roster could potentially see their role increase due to injuries or other circumstances at any given time, but we're locking on six players that Patrick can see becoming important role players on the Bills this year if not more. That said, there's several factors that contributed to that, ranging from key starters on the defense not playing at all, to several players admitting they didn't game plan for Chicago, not to mention the Bears already playing their second preseason game. Still, for the most part the Bills stunk and it wasn't fun to watch at all. The question is, does it matter? On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick has a smorgasbord of his biggest takeaways, both small and potentially large from the Buffalo Bills preseason opening dud against the Chicago Bears.Preseason marks excitement for the return of NFL football but is often meaningless. You're especially hoping that's the case if you're a Bills fan. Surely Sean McDermott won't be in the best of mood as the team returns to practice this week and Patrick has plenty of thoughts on why he shouldn't be.Among them is an offensive line, all three units that couldn't make a block to save their lives, especially in the running game. Again, preseason or not it's a little alarming as all five starters were with the team last year. Also, quarterback play from the moment Josh Allen departed wasn't exactly stellar, nor was the second or third team defense.On the brighter side, we saw glimpses from the offense worthy of exciting including plays from wide receivers Khalil Shakir, Curtis Samuel and Keon Coleman. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran was at Buffalo Bills training camp Monday and has plenty of first-hand observations, with the focus being on a few of the underdog stories that are beginning to take shape.Among the things that most stood out to Patrick is the continued productive play of former undrafted tight end Zach Davidson, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL. He's looked fluid in camp and seems to be catching everything while making it look effortless. He talks about the chances he has of supplanting Quintin Morris on the roster and what the fallout for that could be.Sixth round rookie defensive back Daequan Hardy has also been impressive through parts of camp, including Monday. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, the pads went on for the first time at Buffalo Bills training camp and Patrick Moran was there to accumulate several observations from Monday's practice, including defensive end Greg Rousseau having another dominant showing.There's been several accounts of Rousseau having a really strong start to camp and after seeing his first camp of the season in person, Patrick is completely on board. He discusses what he saw from Rousseau during practice, including dismantling right tackle Spencer Brown multiple times during both individual and team drills. Rousseau's going into his fourth season and is being counted on to elevate his game to a level that puts him up there among the league's better edge defenders. He's also got a lot potentially on the line when it comes to commanding a second contract.Also, after no injuries of significance through the first few days, that streak came to an end with news that likely starting free safety Mike Edwards is expected to miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury. While Bernard was set to take on Tyrel Dodson for a starting job, it was probably thought by most the team would ultimately look outside to find it's starting middle linebacker. Bernard would win the job and within just a few games it became apparent that he's not only a good player, but a difference maker in the Buffalo defense. Bernard went on to have an outstanding first year as a Buffalo starter and has himself positioned as a critical part of the team going forward.Who may be this year's version of Bernard based on the criteria of contributing way more than most expect? Hell, the Sabres didn't even really replace the recently bought out Jeff Skinner.Buffalo did make a few signings with guys that realistically could improve their bottom six forward lines but aren't players that resonated with fans. Patrick has thoughts on Buffalo overpaying for Jason Zucker, adding forwards Sam Lafferty and Nicholas Aube-Kubel as well as finding more depth at goaltending with Felix Sandstrom. The team also re-signed Jacob Bryson.Patrick also goes back to the well on a take he's been saying regularly since February--that the Sabres are the worst organization in all of pro sports right now with the proven fact that seemingly no one of value wants to come play here as part of the evidence. Meanwhile the NHL Draft has come and gone and the Sabres, to the chagrin of many of their fans didn't do much over the weekend---highlighted by trading down from the 11th pick three spots and acquiring an extra second-rounder, a pick they parlayed into someone very likely to be a fourth line forward.Chad has plenty of thoughts on how the opening weekend of player movement and the draft played out, including Buffalo moving down three spots from 11 and in the process costing themselves an opportunity to select one of two highly touted defensemen both on the board for the Sabres original pick, Sam Dickinson and Zeve Buium, a player Minnesota moved up to get at pick No. 12. Did Adams drop the ball by prematurely moving back? The extra pick led Adams to trading with Washington and acquiring pending restricted free agent Brent Malenstyn, a physical player who is excellent in some areas of the game but isn't going to offer a lot offensively (just six goals in his first full NHL campaign last season).Of course, Buffalo did make a pick at No. 14 and Chad shares his thoughts on Konsta Helenius.At least through this point the Sabres biggest move was making the buyout of Jeff Skinner official. The Sabres now save $7.5 million in cap space for this season but will be paying Skinner for the next six years instead of three. Their record on the ice and decisions off the ice support the statement, which only strengthened on Monday night when the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup in game-seven, which of course saw Sam Reinhart score the series-winning goal. With that ,Reinhart joins Jack Eichel and Ryan O'Reilly are former core players that have went on to taste the pinnacle of hockey success----after leaving Buffalo, not to mention Kyle Okposo. Patrick has plenty to say about that and the now likely buyout of overpriced forward Jeff Skinner in the coming days.Another commenter takes the Sabres woes a step further, saying that they've been horribly run for literally most of their existence. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, with just a few weeks before training the camp the Buffalo Bills 90-man roster is pretty much set, and Patrick Moran's joined by friend and recurring guest Anthony Marino to go over the additions and subtractions positionally and come up with their official Bills offseason report card.With emphasizing that this exercise is not a "state of the team" as a whole but more so a comparison and analysis of what the team lost versus what they added, the guys go through the team positionally and try to figure out if the team got better, stayed the same or worsened at each spot. Obviously the conversation revolves around three areas of the team that resulted in the most personnel turnover: wide receiver, defensive line and safety.The exercise also shows a few areas of the team that clearly on paper have downgraded on paper during the offseason, most notably cornerback after losing both Tre White and Dane Jackson and the only addition being a sixth-round rookie who's path to the roster is most likely through special teams. Offensive line is also a downgrade after losing their starting center and reliable utility lineman while adding just a fifth-round rookie, even if his ceiling is ultimately pretty high.Plus, the running back position may be an addition by subtraction upgrade at this point---ditto at quarterback and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens for a second consecutive show and this time the guys are discussing if the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins should all be considered co-favorites to win the AFC east division.Among others, Ceasar's Sports Book in Vegas has Buffalo, New York and Miami essentially in a dead heat in regards to betting odds to win the division, with the Bills and Jets both at +180 and the Dolphins right there with them at +190. Should that be the case? Patrick doesn't think so while Joe thinks it should be Buffalo and Miami neck and neck. Of course, debating ensues. Patrick acknowledges there's several questions that need to be answered about the Bills but is more confident they're still the cream of the crop of the division while Joe continues to be of the mindset of expecting Buffalo to take a step back.Meanwhile Patrick keeps things even by laying out several question marks fans and supporters of both Miami and New York should be having as well. They discuss Miami's ridiculously hard schedule down the stretch, key edge rushers trying to come back from major injuries and general lack of belief (at least from Patrick) in the quarterback. It's probably in stark contrast to what a lot of Bills fans assume Diggs feels about Allen, seeing who presumably wanted out of Buffalo this offseason and there's been reports and plenty of speculation that the Diggs/Allen dynamic had been on shaky grounds for quite a while. Joe also talks about his belief that the majority of Bills fans would like to see Diggs fail in Houston to make them feel better about trading him away---a move Joe continues to think was a mistake.They also talk about OTA's, minicamp and other offseason content that Joe regards as mostly a waste of time.
