Ep 391391: Why Moms Lack Self Trust
From the time you were a little girl you were likely told to quiet or completely shut down your own instincts in order to make other people happy. “Give Uncle Bob a big hug!” “Wear the pink dress. That one looks the prettiest on you. And then you watched your mom seek your dad’s approval and permission over and over as if it were required. Maybe it was. And then you had your own baby and you got really good an ignoring your body as it screamed at you: “I’m hungry!” “I’m tired!” “I need a break.” You couldn’t eat or sleep or take a break because this baby needed you in order to stay alive. And now you’ve existed for perhaps decades silencing your instincts in order to meet others expectations, make others happy, and keep babies alive. And you’ve completely lost any sense of self-trust. You wonder why you don’t know what you’re passionate about or why you can’t figure out your purpose or why you don’t even have a favorite food anymore. It’s because you’ve lost the ability to trust your gut, to listen to your instincts, to trust that you are smart and worthy and qualified and deserving. If you’re reading this and thinking, “SHIT. She’s talking about me.”, this episode is for you. This is where you get to start building back your self-trust. This is where you learn to get quiet and curious and conscientious. This is where you begin. 389: Holidays, Boundaries, PEACE & JOY
Every year since launching The Shameless Mom Academy podcast, moms have asked me about how to manage families and boundaries around the holidays. So, every year I talk about it. Because I don’t believe you should compromise your joy to meet someone else’s needs. I want you to own your holidays. Own your peace. Own your joy. Own the magic. Own the boundaries. Own your disregard for others' expectations of you. That last part might sound harsh, insensitive, even downright selfish. And maybe it is. And maybe that’s ok! It is not your job to manage the expectations of 4 sets of grandparents, 7 aunts, 3 uncles, 37 cousins, 4 step-siblings, a half-sister and a partridge in a pear tree. IT’S NOT. Your job is to meet the needs of your immediate family unit - to create joy and magic and meaningful traditions for these most intimate relationships with the few people you adore more than anyone else in the world. It might be possible to do this and meet the needs of some extended family. And it might not. And that’s ok. If you have any dread over the upcoming holiday season, this ep is for you. Tune in to learn how to prioritize all the right things (your joy and peace!) and how to set boundaries around all the noise (even if you love the heck out of those noisy folks!) Listen in to hear Dana share: The process of breaking through the fear around setting goals How she got out of paralyzing fear in order to create space to go after her dreams of writing and speaking How losing her mom by suicide shifted her ability to resist perfectionism and start taking risks to become an author The power of putting things in the context they need to be in order to overcome her family stories around incest and suicide What her intuition feels like and how she has learned to listen to it more often How life mapping can get you in deeper touch with your intuition The importance of having a deep and clear understanding around the WHY attached to each of your goals Links Mentioned: Connect with Dana and find events: Life Mapping Institute Dana on Facebook Life Mapping Institute Dana on LinkedIn Dana on Instagram Life Mapping Institute Book: Live Your Gift Thank You to Our Sponsors: Best Fiends: Download FREE on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Ep 379379: 4 Time Management Mindset Shifts for Moms
Do you suck at time management? I get it. I’ve been there. Like, this week. I have to laugh at the timing of this episode. I recorded it a few weeks ago, but at the time of writing this show description, my time couldn’t feel more tight. It has been one of those weeks where I’m constantly having to follow my own advice. In a week when all the things are exploding and imploding, I’m having to be exceptionally clear around why I’m spending time on every single task - to make sure that I’m not prioritizing the wrong thing at the wrong time. This is HARD. This means that I’m dropping a few balls - on purpose. And that’s ok. Time management is not about getting all the things done on time. It’s about getting the right things done at the right time. It’s about identifying what the “right things” even are. Listen in to this episode to learn how to: Work with your vision instead of against it when it comes to prioritization Gain clarity around action steps versus tasks (so important!) Ep 377377: 17 Ways Motherhood Qualifies You To Be A CEO
I’ve known for the last few years that motherhood is a massive qualifier for any CEO role. For quite some time I’ve been compiling lists in my head of different ways motherhood prepares a woman to lead and negotiate and teach and advocate at the highest level. But when I sat down to create a master list of the TOP ways motherhood qualifies a woman to be a CEO, I could barely contain my excitement. The thoughts that had been swarming in my head for years came pouring out and the connections were so clear and so obvious. It is not a stretch by any means to state that motherhood qualifies you to lead at the very highest level. In fact, I would suggest that in some (many?) instances those who are not mothers are significantly less qualified to lead at the highest levels. Motherhood requires you to be a master multitasker, people manager, time manager, negotiator, decision-maker, action taker, planner, budgeter, teacher, coach, mentor, visionary, value creator, boundary enforcer, teammate and advocate who can be patient, persuasive, compassionate, fearless, agile, empathetic, resilient, intentional, resourceful, disciplined, determined, and tenacious as all get out. Tell me what other role, job, experience would make you more qualified to be a CEO? You are capable of being the CEO of your life, your household, your community, and any other organization you want to build or lead. If you’re not 100% certain of that already, this episode is for you. Listen in. More than once. Prior to her consulting practice, Arianna worked on maternal health issues for over a decade as a health educator, a social worker in a mental health clinic, a reproductive health researcher, and a yoga therapist. Listen in to hear Arianna share: How to approach maternity leave as experimental and not templated - understanding that you cannot predict what your situation might be The necessity of framing maternity leave as a basic human right 3 tips to “babyproof your business” for entrepreneur mamas Places and groups where you can connect with other new mamas in order to strengthen your social support networks How to create a transition plan back to prepare to re-enter your work postpartum Links mentioned: Get your Early Bird tickets to Shameless Mom Con 2020: shamelessmomcon.com Connect with Arianna: Arianna Taboada Instagram Postpartum Support International Thank you to our sponsors: Openfit: Join the Openfit 30-day challenge and get a special extended 30-day free trial membership to Openfit when you text SHAMELESS to 303030. Ep 375375: The Danger Of Indifference In Motherhood
You can’t afford to be indifferent. You can’t afford to not care or have an opinion. When you let others have all the opinions and all the loud voices, you also let them have all the power. When you let others play big while you stay small, you risk losing or never even acquiring what is rightfully yours. When you don’t create space to own and honor your truths you miss opportunities to share your strengths, gifts, and talents with the world - massively limiting your impact and your legacy. When we as women don’t show ALL THE WAY UP we pay the ultimate price - perpetuating sexism and gender inequality on a global level. You might think I’m sounding a little dramatic here. A little “extra”, as the kids would say. I’m going big with this statement and my beliefs around this because I’m not willing to passively perpetuate gender inequality and I’m not interested in growing a community of passive women who want to stay cozy and comfy with the status quo. I’m here for you - and for your power, your gifts, your opinions, your stories, and the legacy you’re building. I’m here to see you get the promotion, get the raise, get a seat at the board room table and rock the mic on the biggest stages. So, let’s go be a little extra together, shall we? Ep 373373: 5 Ways To Build Something You're Ridiculously Proud Of
When the inspiration for this episode hit me I got super excited. Typical. But then I got a little worried. Not typical. I worried that I would put an episode out there that told you all to “BUILD SOMETHING!” and you all would say: “HOW?” “ WHEN?” “ WHYYYYY????” Look, you work your butt off as it is. I SEE YOU. You hustle like a mother to get yourself and the kids out the door in the morning, to run a household, to reach your professional aspirations, to keep allll the balls in the air. And now I’m gonna tell you to go build something on top of all that. It’s a tall order. And also…. It might be the key to your sanity, your joy, and your most ideal mental health. You were born to create something - whether it’s creating a plentiful garden, a knitting circle, a community of like-minded women, a side hustle selling makeup, or an online business. In creating something, you have the opportunity to tap into the truest parts of yourself. And this is crucial in motherhood. One of the most important parts of managing the motherload of motherhood is staying connected to YOU - and those parts of your identity that exist outside of marriage and motherhood that don’t have a ton of opportunity to SHINE unless you make the time to let them shine. In this episode, I’m going to talk you through 4 reasons to build something outside of marriage and motherhood and 5 ways to get to building. Building something that you’re ridiculously proud of doesn’t have to consume a ton of time and energy. And chances are the thing you build will actually give you energy and motivation in other areas of your life. Are you ready? Let’s do this! I learned a lot in this conversation and walked away with some new strategies that I’m excited to take with me in order to lean into tension instead of run like hell to get away from it. Listen in to hear CrisMarie and Susan share: Why conflict, not romance, is the key to a lasting relationship Why walking into tension is important and powerful How to use the 5-5-5 method of conflict resolution How to grow and evolve in a partnership to share dreams and needs Why compatibility is NOT the secret to a long and fulfilling relationship Why you need to show up as a “FULL ME” in your partnership Links mentioned: Shameless Mom Con 2020 tickets are available!! Ep 371371: Train People How To Treat You
People will treat you according to your boundaries. If you let people walk all over you, they’ll keep walking all over you. If you let people spit on your face in the middle of your living room (or on Facebook), they’ll keep doing it. You have every right to have high standards and high expectations around how others are allowed to treat you. It’s ok to expect people to act in high integrity. It’s ok to let people know certain things don’t fly. It’s ok to draw a line in the sand and say, “NO MORE.” You deserve to be treated like the queen you are. You deserve to expect and demand respect from others. And when that doesn’t happen, you need to make it clear that it’s not ok and you will not stand for it. Listen in to learn 5 ways how you can better train people how to treat you #everydamnday - including powerful and painful examples from my own life and a major lesson from the queen herself, Brene Brown. Ep 369369: Lessons Learned While Embracing Adventure Over Chaos
I took a serious vow 10 weeks ago. I vowed to embrace adventure over chaos for the summer. I embraced this mission with all my heart. I had a strategic plan. I had a support crew. I had hope. And even with all that, this mission was HARD. There is no denying that there were moments of magic this summer. There were plenty of those. And for that, I’m beyond grateful. But I’m ending this season exhausted and in need of rest and reflection to figure out how I can do better next year. Even in the face of fatigue, there were some valuable takeaways from my “adventure over chaos” mission. I learned: I can be wildly productive in short stints of time if that’s all I have I can keep my business growing outside of the structure and routine I typically thrive in I can ask for help and everyone will immediately lean in to help me I can compartmentalize work and play more than I thought I could (barely, lol) My simple routines keep me grounded, even in chaos (morning practice and workouts, mainly) In the absence of full days to myself, small blocks of restorative time make a big difference I’m not as immune to mom guilt as I thought I was Listen in to this full episode if you’re also recovering from a season of overwhelm OR approaching a season of overwhelm. So, let’s treat this season appropriately. Let’s hunker down and dig into new habits (or the reintegration of old habits that fell by the wayside over the last 3 months.) Let’s get back to what serves us as women, as leaders, as the CEOs of our lives. Ep 366366: Sarah Stevens: The Beautifull Project: The Truth About Fatness and Thin Allies
After leaving a career in corporate healthcare in 2016, Sarah set out to find work that better aligned with her passion and purpose. As co-owner of Black Pearl Coaching and Consulting, she served as a consultant to small businesses and nonprofits. Through this work, she accepted a position as the inaugural Executive Director with Lead(h)er, a nonprofit that connects women with mentors to fuel career and community engagement - a position she still holds to this day. In 2018, Sarah launched The Beautifull Project, an entrepreneurial effort that combined her past professional experience with her commitment to pursuing purposeful work. Using the power of collective storytelling, The Project invites women back to their bodies, encouraging, and supporting them as they learn to use their voice and take up space. When Sarah is not thinking up big ideas for The Project, she is shamelessly momming 3 teens, writing, reading, teaching yoga, and leaning as far as possible into an honest, authentic life. Listen in to hear Sarah share: Her experience growing up in a body she deemed to be “too big and too much” Her history of body image battles and disordered eating How her Beautifull Project was born out of the moment her doctor prescribed her speed and a 600 calorie a day diet for weight loss Why “being concerned” for a fat person’s health is a discriminatory crutch How she’s embracing living in a fat body How to talk to your kids about fatness and fat as a neutral descriptor Why thin people must be allies for fat people if we want to create space for all women to live safely in their bodies and in their power Links mentioned: Connect with Sarah Facebook: The Beautifull Project Instagram: @thebeautifullproject and @seeing_sarah The TED talk Podcast: Beauti: The Interviews Thank you to our sponsors: Embr: Go to Embr and Save $50 with code SHAMELESS at checkout. Ep 365365: How I'm Raising An Emotionally Intelligent & Emotionally Capable Son
Recently I’ve spoken out about the crucial importance of cultivating emotional intelligence in young men. The official definition of emotional intelligence is: the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Historically, men have not been raised to be emotionally intelligent, emotionally capable or emotionally available. Historically, we have largely failed to raise men who can handle interpersonal relationships or relationships with their larger communities judiciously and empathetically. Historically, we have taught men to stuff feelings, dismiss feelings, ignore feelings, and deny feelings. And the consequences are proving to be dire. There are so many horrific outcomes when we have multiple generations of men who are unable to identify their feelings, express their feelings, and relate to other peoples’ feelings. The result of generations of poor emotional intelligence among men is rape culture, diet culture, racism, sexism, men policing women’s bodies, rampant struggles with mental health, the addiction epidemic and so much more that we won’t see the full impact of for years to come. This is disturbing and distressing to say the least. Add to that the numbers and data we’re seeing around mass shootings - largely executed by young, white men - young white men who with known mental health struggles and/or dangerously radical views stemming from a lack of empathy and compassion for others. This is an emotional intelligence crisis. The responsibility of raising an emotionally intelligent young man (a young white man, in my case) in our current landscape is a critical task that cannot be taken lightly. A number of you have asked me how we can do our very best in raising emotionally intelligent young men - and just how I’m facing this responsibility head-on. In this episode, I’ll share the 8 things I’m doing to raise an emotionally intelligent, emotionally capable son. By no means do I think I’m doing it perfectly. But I think I’m getting a few things right and it’s all worth sharing if it helps any of our young men. Ep 364364: Darcy Lockman: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership
Darcy Lockman is a journalist turned clinical psychologist and the author of All the Rage: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership (Harper Collins). Her writing has appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post, among others. Her first book, Brooklyn Zoo, chronicled the year she spent working on the psychiatric ward of a city hospital. She currently practices in New York City, where she lives with her husband and daughters. I have invested a lot of time learning about building equitable relationships in the last year. As someone who likes to take on all. the. things., I know what it’s like to be the doer and the know-er and the gatekeeper of everything in the family. It’s an exhausting, unfair, and unnecessary burden that we can improve - drastically. I couldn’t be more excited to invite you into this conversation with Darcy and me. Listen in to hear Darcy share: What “good” dads get away with Societal, multi-generational indoctrination of gender roles - even among progressive couples The truth about maternal gatekeeping and the potential damage around it The power of using your anger in adaptive ways to have a more equitable relationship The research-proven struggles and burdens of the mental load of motherhood, especially in the first 4 years Strategies to build a more equitable partnership with your partner Links mentioned: Connect with Darcy Book: All The Rage Twitter: @darcy_lockman Thank you to our sponsors: BruMate: Right now, Brumate is giving my/our listeners a special discount of 15% off your first order when you go to www.brumate.com and use our code SHAMELESS, that's BruMate. Ep 362362: Carol Gavhane: Surviving Secondary Infertility
Carol Gavhane is co-founder of Asha Blooms, a handcrafted purposeful jewelry company dedicated to inspiring and uplifting people. Born out of her walk with secondary infertility, she and her husband created this business once it dawned on them that words and intentions really do matter. Each piece of jewelry is tied to a specific intention, and it’s their vision that others see themselves for who they already are – whole, loved, complete, courageous and renewed. Everything about their first child was fairly typical, but trying to add to the family afterwards was incredibly difficult. During those years, they tried everything under the sun to get or sustain pregnancy - clean eating, support groups, fertility yoga, acupuncture, meditation, negotiations with God, many visits to the fertility clinic, and so on. These services absolutely helped as they provided comfort or bits of positivity, but there were many dark days thrown in the mix. During this journey, Carol found a fertility bracelet that became a beacon of hope, a daily wearable reminder to continue on, which she did for nearly three years. Looking back, Carol credits science, hope, and intention with the creation of baby Henry. I had the opportunity to meet Carol a couple months ago through a colleague and our connection was instant and deep. I relate to so much of her story. I know a lot of other mamas out there are with Carol and me, as well. Listen in to hear Carol share: What secondary infertility is and how it flipped her life upside down for 3 years What infertility looks like on the outside vs. the inside of a woman's body and demeanor How she found hope and comfort in an unlikely place What inspired her to start a jewelry company and the special meaning behind her work Links Mentioned: Connect with Carol and see her gorgeous Asha Blooms jewelry Asha Blooms on Instagram Asha Blooms on Facebook Thank you to our sponsors: Stamps: Right now, my listeners get a special offer that includes a 4-week trial PLUS free postage AND a digital scale without any long-term commitment. Ep 361361: Take Off Your Armor, Put On Your Cape
Are you ready for some truth-telling??? It’s time to take off your armor. You deserve to embrace and appreciate all parts of yourself and your story, not just the pretty parts. You deserve to reframe and reset your mindset around the struggles in your life, not settle for constant self-doubt and negative self-talk. You deserve to get curious about who you are and where you want to go in life, not stay the course that is no longer lighting you up. You deserve to grow and expand and become a more positive, powerful, purposeful version of yourself, not shrink in frustration and worry that you'll never get all the things you want. Not only do you deserve all this - you are TRULY CAPABLE of all this. You are capable of embracing all of you and all of your story. You are capable of reframing and resetting your mindset so you can shut down that negative self-talk. You are capable of getting curious about where you want to go in the next 3, 6, 12 months and actually starting to take steps to get yourself there. You are capable of growing and expanding into a more positive, powerful and purposeful version of yourself starting right now. If you're struggling with your identity - who you are, where you've come from, where you want to go - you are not alone. And it's time to take off your armor. The armor that you think is protecting you is actually holding you back from taking action, building momentum, and realizing what you're truly capable of. Here’s what your armor might look like: keeping people at arm’s length Laughing when you are hurting instead of speaking up for yourself Keeping secrets and holding shame around your stories Playing small out of fear of failure or fear of looking silly Making others look small in order to feel better about yourself (gossiping about other women, telling other women’s stories, passing judgment on other women’s bodies, choices, success stories) Staying comfortable and stagnant instead of taking a chance to step into bigger roles/opportunities Tune into learn 7 steps to take off your armor and put on your cape. Ep 360360: Chrissy King: Strength, Power and Intersectional Feminism
Chrissy King is a writer, speaker, strength coach, and self-proclaimed truth-teller with a passion for intersectional feminism and creating a diverse and inclusive wellness industry. She has been featured in SELF, SHAPE, BuzzFeed, Muscle and Fitness, and Livestrong, among others. She empowers individuals to stop shrinking, start taking up space and use their energy to create their specific magic in the world. When she’s not serving her clients by empowering them to create stress-free and sustainable lifestyles and feel confident and empowered in their skin, she spends her time lifting all the weights, reading, traveling, and hanging with friends and family. I have wanted to have Chrissy come on the show for some time. I’ve followed her for years online and her messaging always resonates with me. I think this conversation is especially timely given the Monday’s episode about Beyonce’s recent messaging around body image. While I recorded this interview before the Beyonce episode, there are a lot of the same themes and reinforced messaging around the power in protecting and elevating women of all backgrounds, shapes, sizes, orientations. Listen in to hear Chrissy share: How passion in one area of your life can ignite passion in other areas of your life What intersectional feminism is and how it pertains to you Her terrifying move to publish an article titled, “Is Fitness Only For Thin White Women?” - and the response it drew The importance of noticing inclusion and diversity in ALL spaces - and why you need to call it out when it’s missing (which it usually is) How to manage your evolving relationship with your body Links mentioned: Facebook: Chrissy King Fitness Instagram: I Am Chrissy King Twitter: I Am Chrissy King Thank you to our sponsors: Embr: Go to Embr and Save $50 with code SHAMELESS at checkout. Ep 359359: What Happens When You Call Out Beyonce
Last week I called out Beyonce in a social media post. A lot of really interesting lessons and insights came from the ensuing comments and conversation. I thought it was worth dedicating an entire episode to the results of that one social media post because it brought to light: The difference between shaming someone and holding them accountable How you can simultaneously be a victim and a perpetrator of diet culture Why thin women need to protect and elevate plus size women Why women should be hypersensitive to body shaming and how being dismissive of sizeism compromises women’s power on a global level How you can appreciate and find tremendous value in someone’s work and leadership while not agreeing with everything they say and stand for Thank you to our sponsors: BarkBox: Get a FREE EXTRA MONTH of Barkbox with any 6 or 12-month subscription by visiting BarkBox. Ep 357357: Stop Making Other People Comfortable
Women are raised to believe we should make other people comfortable. We should be caretakers of others needs and desires and feelings - even when it comes at a cost to our own needs, desires, and feelings. Because of this indoctrination early in our lives, we also take it upon ourselves to make sure that we don’t outshine others - because that could make them feel bad or less than. Instead, we let ourselves feel bad and less than. We make it a priority to make other people comfortable. And in many cases this means we shrink and play small in front of others. We don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable and we certainly don’t want anyone to judge us for shining too brightly. So, we stay small, quiet, dull, demure instead - because showing up as bold, bright, big, brave feels too risky. Here are some instances in which you might make others uncomfortable with your shininess and badassery, as well as put yourself at risk of other people’s judgment: when you lose weight when you run a 5K, 10K or a marathon when you quit your job to stay home with your kids when you make a lot of money when you write a book when you start your own business when you go for a promotion when you go back to school to get an advanced degree when you put your child in full-time childcare when you go on an epic vacation when you take every Friday off when you get weekly massage when you buy your kid something fancy/”spoil” them when you buy a bigger house when you buy a tiny house when you announce you’re a photographer/event planner/jewelry designer/lifecoach/blogger/podcaster, speaker, writer when you say you want to be a mogul Have you ever achieved one of these items and intentionally not shared it with others? You kept is small and private out of fear that others would be uncomfortable with your success or achievement and/or that they might pass judgment on you and dull your shine? I want to encourage you to reframe how you think about other people's opinions. It’s not your job to tend to other people’s opinions. In fact, you should pay them no mind. It’s not your job to make other people comfortable. Their discomfort is about them, not you. And it’s their responsibility, not yours. It’s not your job to play small and stay small because others can’t or won’t step up and shine. Your job is to SHINE LIKE A MOTHER. And when you do so you will become a mirror that attracts people who want to see you in all your big, bold, brave badassery. When you start attracting these kinds of people, you will continue to be able to shine in brighter ways for all your days. Listen in for a deeper dive and 4 ways to deal with the uncomfortable, judgy people in your life. Ep 355355: The Necessary Connection Between Courage and Confidence
The truth about confidence is that it REQUIRES courage. If you take a good look back at your life, I bet you’ll see a clear connection between the times that you took courageous action and the defining moments when you became more confident. You’ll likely notice that these moments all involved: getting uncomfortable doing it scared pushing yourself further than you’ve ever gone facing fears head-on Some examples of this might include: Applying for a new, higher-level job Signing up for a 5K, 10K, marathon Speaking up in the face of injustice Reporting an abuser Asking for a raise Setting a firm boundary with a family member or long-time friend Moving across the country Leaving an abusive relationship Showing up to an event where you don’t know anyone Traveling alone Skydiving or bungee jumping Climbing a mountain Having a baby Advocating for your child’s needs Starting a business Leaving your marriage Fixing your marriage Starting a blog Asking for help Finding a therapist or coach Getting healthy Courage is contagious. When you do one courageous thing and subsequently build a little confidence, you automatically start looking for more opportunities to be courageous. Over time, you build momentum around being an action taker and dream chaser who enjoys the discomfort that comes with courageous action because you know the outcome will be a more confident sense of self, a more joy-filled life, and a world with bigger dreams realized. When you don’t take courage action on a regular basis, you become complacent. You don’t see yourself as someone who can grow or meet new goals. You feel stuck, unmotivated, uninspired. This is painful. So, choose your pain. The pain of complacency or the pain of courageous action. One has a much more positive and powerful outcome. Tune in to hear 7 ways to build courage that will train your brain to take courageous, confident, life-changing action on a regular basis. Ep 354354: Laura Cathcart Robbins: I Was The Only Black Woman In The Room
Laura Cathcart Robbins is a Shameless Mom, a writer, and a recovery thriver and survivor. In September 2018 she found herself in an all too familiar situation. She was the only one in the room. She was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her ‘only one’ experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt ‘othered.’ Laura now hosts the podcast, The Only One In The Room, where she interviews a person about their ‘only one’ story each episode. On her show, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable, accounts from people who are like most of us. Laura’s hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. She hopes to make you think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school or in a crowded subway car. Laura’s show and her work is for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, her show and her work are for everyone. Listen in to hear Laura share: What it’s like to be the only black person in the room in 2018 The difference between visible only-ness vs invisible only-ness - like addiction, divorce, infertility, having a child with special needs What it feels like to be the only one in the room and how we’ve all been the only one in the room at some point The isolation of onlyness - and the antidote How to create opportunities and cultivate your biggest gifts from your onlyness Links Mentioned: The Only One In The Room Podcast Laura’s article in the Huffington Post Laura on Instagram Laura on Facebook Thank you to our sponsors: Get access to MOMENTUM Mamas and Shameless Mom Con 2020 during our wild & crazy Christmas in July event (starting July 20!) Ep 353353: How To Build Social Support Systems That Serve You
As you grow and evolve in different areas of your life it is imperative that you build support systems that serve you. This doesn’t typically happen by chance. It happens by design. While this takes effort and often vulnerability, the value of safe and sacred support systems is immeasurable. It is common to make the mistake of leaning on one person or one group for all your needs. If you want to be really well supported it’s important to have multiple networks and support systems to lean into. Here are some of my networks/support systems (in random order): Mom friends Female entrepreneur friends Podcaster friends Running/workout/training friends Forever Friends (high school/college) My marriage The purpose of these different support systems is that you need different networks to connect with people who are in the same place at the same time with the same needs, dreams, and interests. As you listen to this episode, you’ll learn why it’s not reasonable or wise to lean on one person or one group for all your needs. It’s so important to build these support systems because: You must have a place to shine You must have a safe place to be seen as you grow You must have sacred places to connect with like-minded people All of this preserves your mental health, improves your sense of worth, and helps you build a more dynamic identity. AND all of this helps you minimize and mitigate loneliness, isolation, depression, and anxiety. Listen in to learn: How to build support systems that serve you How to release relationships that don’t allow you to shine Why some people are no longer your people and how to be ok with that Where to find your squad and how to connect with them Thank you to our sponsors: Get access to MOMENTUM Mamas and Shameless Mom Con 2020 during our wild & crazy Christmas in July event (starting July 20!) EKim Strobel is a teacher, a consultant, a speaker, a happiness coach, and an aspiring author. But her personal life is just as full. When she’s not firing up educators with her signature mix of excitement and experience, she’s a die-hard runner, an advocate for her community’s abandoned animals, and a family-oriented gal who loves spending time with her husband Scott, their four children, two grandkids, and three pups. It’s tempting to believe that the Chief Happiness Officer herself has never known a down day. But the truth is, sometimes you have to live through darkness before you can thrive in the light. Kim spent her childhood and teen and young adult years dealing with panic attacks and crippling fear. Diagnosis of a seizure disorder and full panic disorder followed and with them a burgeoning fear that she would never be able to achieve her dreams. Listen in to hear how Kim overcame her crippling panic disorder and what her life looks like today - as a Happiness Coach, who is not immune to panic attack relapses. Listen in to hear Kim share: How she endured 8 years living with panic disorder, having 25 panic attacks a day at times How medical intervention and CBD therapy saved her life How to retrain your brain toward happiness 50% of your long term happiness is genetic, 10% is external circumstances, 40% is self-controlled/self-managed Top 5 happiness habits What your kids are really see when you show up imperfectly Links Mentioned: Connect with Kim Free Facebook Group Instagram Deepak Chopra Ananda meditation app Thank you to our sponsors: Scary Mommy Speaks podcast Openfit: Join the Openfit 30-day challenge and get a special extended 30-day free trial membership to Openfit when you text SHAMELESS to 303030. Ep 351351: Dreaming, Doing & Decisiveness
There is a huge difference between dreaming and doing. Yet, sometimes we confuse the two. Dreaming lives in your head and your heart. Dreaming doesn’t have a plan. Dreaming is passive. Dreaming doesn’t have a start date. Dreaming doesn’t keep you accountable. Dreaming is not an accomplishment. Dreaming is picture perfect and linear, a series of perfect steps that take you to a perfect destination. Dreaming is future-oriented. It’s about later… when you have time when the kids are older when the circumstances are juuuuust so. Dreaming is outcome focused. Dreaming feels indulgent and delightful, like something you might not even be worthy of. In contrast… Doing is your dream in action. Doing is a plan. Doing has a start date, as well as an end date. Doing keeps you accountable. Doing is an accomplishment. Doing is not linear, its a series of highs and lows and lefts and rights and a few wrong turns that take you to a beautifully imperfect place that you’re ridiculously proud of. Doing is action oriented. Doing is present-oriented, not future-oriented. Doing is step focused - not outcome focused - where you’re always considering, “what is my next right step?” Doing feels scary, exciting, nerve-wracking, determined, and disciplined. Dreaming definitely serves a purpose. It provides: Hope Vision Clarity Joy Escape Doing serves a transformative experience: Sense of pride Sense of momentum Sense of accomplishment Increased self-worth New/evolved sense of identity At the crux of dreaming vs doing is a lot of decision making. I would argue that decisiveness is the biggest struggle of doing. Making decisions toward your dreams (the doing) can be crippling. But for the doing to take place, the decisions must be made. You must become a DECISION MAKER AND AN ACTION TAKER. It is the only path to your dreams. Listen in to hear how to learn how to become a better decision maker and action taker - in order to be a DOER who realizes all her dreams. Ep 349349: 9 Ways To Improve Your Self Worth
I have recently had multiple mamas reach out to me to ask me to do an episode on self-worth. AND I’ve been repeatedly noticing that questioning one’s worthiness is a common stumbling block for a number of my coaching clients. In fact, perhaps the most common stumbling block. When it comes to self-worth, we need to look at a few things: Why do you feel a lack of worth? What is at the root of your struggles with self-worth? How is lack of worth showing up in your life? How is lack of worth holding you back in life? What are the dangerous risk factors of not cultivating a strong sense of self-worth? What simple action steps can you take to improve your self-worth? Cultivating a strong sense of self-worth can take time - as many of us have been sitting in self-doubt and grappling with negative self-talk for years, maybe decades. But when you start to identify the root of your struggles and see some of the patterns around poor self-worth in your life, it can quickly become clear how you can change course. Changing course doesn’t have to be big and overwhelming. It can be small, simple steps you take to integrate a more positive and powerful sense of self into your identity. And this can be SO FREEING. In this episode, I walk you through 9 such steps. So, let’s get to it, shall we? Let’s all step up and step into our badassery. Ep 347347: Are You Stuck In Distraction From Action?
I’m going to challenge you on something today. Are you ready? I want to know how you get caught up in distraction from action? Do you get stuck in vicious loops of email → social media → checking work data and never actually dig into the projects that will take your business or career to the next level? Or maybe your vicious loop looks more like pick up toys → clean up kitchen → change laundry → check phone, over and over all day long? Or what about the constant loop of researching → planning → list making? Or maybe you make rules for yourself that distract you from the action - like, “I must wash all our baseboards and organize my closet before I start my [book/blog/podcast/apply for a job/write the email asking for a raise].” Sound familiar??? All of this is a distraction from the action - busyness that serves as a facade for productivity. We mistake tasks and to do’s for goals and action steps. There is a huge difference though. Tasks and to do’s don’t take a closer to realizing our dreams. In fact, they are often hiding places and safe spaces that hold us back from our dreams. Conversely, goals and action steps are critical steps toward accomplishments that reap great benefits - much greater than clean baseboards.
