Ep 490490: Give Yourself Permission To Practice
Soooo… I’m taking a memoir writing class. I do not know the first thing about writing a memoir. I don’t know if I even want to write a memoir. But I do know that I want to be a better writer. At the end of my first writing class, our teacher gave us an assignment, “Write 700 words about your topic. And don’t try to make it the best piece of writing you’ve ever done. Make it mediocre.” When was the last time you gave yourself permission to be mediocre? When did you decide to try something just for the sake of trying it and letting yourself practice? Most of us are constantly tied up in measuring progress and growth. We are aiming to get closer to perfect with every step. It’s ok to stop measuring progress sometimes. It’s ok to not track metrics. It’s ok to be totally imperfect and messy and just play around in order to learn and grow and have fun. It’s ok to simply practice. In giving yourself permission to practice, you get to show up without judgement. You get to step outside of your head and ignore metrics that you might otherwise mistakenly attach to your self worth. You get to be creative and just have fun. Remember fun? Yeah, me neither… Listen in to hear all about how you can give yourself permission to practice and step away from a constant push for progress and perfection. This might just be the breath of fresh air you need! Now, more than ever, her dedication to helping entrepreneurial women lead with their heart and head is the exact type of leadership we need. Listen in to hear Leslie share: How she went from leadership in ministry work to running a six figure pole dancing studio The overlap of ministry and pole dancing in terms of voice, power and reclamation What it really means to create a values based community or organization How she uses the Enneagram to highlight her gifts and skills in order to have the most impact in the world Why it’s important to know your innate strengths and weaknesses in order to be a better leader How women are disconnected from their own bodies and “dead to their bodies” and why this is dangerous How to recognize our somatic reactions to notice when we’re aligned or out of alignment The difference between responding and reacting and how to get better at responding The importance of having pleasure practices Links mentioned: Get updates about our upcoming Gratitude Challenge Connect with Leslie Instagram: Leslie Lyons Book: The Road Back To You Thank you to our sponsors: Because Mom Said So Podcast: Find on Apple Podcast, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts! Ep 488488: It’s Ok If You’re Tired
It’s ok if you’re tired. Over the last I have had many conversations with clients and colleagues and loved ones who are just tired. We are tired of being home with everyone everyday. We are tired of shifts and changes to job status. We are tired of constantly worrying about health and safety around COVID. We are tired of adapting to uncertainty and unpredictability. We are tired of distance learning (bless our teachers!). We are tired of having no personal time or personal space. We are tired of politics. We are tired of social media. We are tired of feeling disillusioned. We are tired of trying to just get through it. The just get throughedness of 2020 is wiping us out, if we’re being honest. I’m giving you permission to OWN & HONOR your fatigue. You should feel tired. Bone tired. But, in spite of your fatigue, you do have to keep going. Ep 486486: Being Connected vs Actually Connecting
There is a huge difference between being connected and actually connecting. Most of us are very connected. We are constantly tapped into social media, news outlets, our inboxes, TV shows, games & apps on our phone, and online shopping. So many opportunities to be connected each day, right?! How are these connections making you feel? Being connected in so many places and spaces that don’t allow for deep connection and vulnerability with other humans can leave us feeling drained, exhausted, frustrated, hopeless, powerless, depressed, and anxious. Being so constantly connected can instill self doubt, fear, and anger. Being constantly connected can feel so constricting. On the other hand, actually connecting in deep and meaningful relationships feels restorative, regenerative, freeing and joy filled. Meaningful connecting can instill hope and power and gratitude. This feels expansive instead of constricting. Connecting positive impacts our physical, mental, and emotional health. YES! Can you see the difference between being connected vs actually connecting? It’s pretty profound. Listen in to learn how you can spend less time being connected and more time actually connecting. Ep 485485: Kelly Rose: Turning It Up vs Toning It Down While Running For Senate
As a mom, mentor, and voice for the community, Kelly takes pride in standing with those who are fighting for a better, more compassionate world. Kelly and her husband Steve live on a farm in McDonough, GA with their two elementary age children, two horses, one pony, three donkeys, three dogs, and four cats. Their home is Kelly’s favorite place to spend time with any spare moment usually spent out in the barn visiting with her animals. Together Steve and Kelly own and operate a successful local business, Studio 48, an acting studio on McDonough’s Square. Independently they each are still working in their longstanding careers in the television and film industry, Kelly as a Post Production Producer and Steve an actor. In taking this step to run for Senate District 17, Kelly hopes she can inspire the next generation to get involved and prove that you do not need a specific background or look a certain way to take an active role in politics. Kelly believes that as laws are made for us it is now time to show everyone they can be made by us. Listen in to hear Kelly share: Why she decided to run for Senate after moving from CA to GA The trigger around women’s rights that pushed her to go all in on her Senate run The impact of her campaign and activism and hate mail on her family How she handled it when her male colleague told her she should “tone it down” if she wanted to win What it’s like to run for office as a progressive in a traditionally conservative district How we can restore trust in politicians after such a massive erosion of trust over the last handful of years How she’s allowing herself to take imperfect action while parenting and running for office Links mentioned: Connect with and learn more about Kelly: Kelly Rose Kelly on IG & Twitter: Kelly Rose and Kelly Rose Kelly on FB: @kellyrose4GA Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 484484: Dr. Alexandra Owensby: Single Mom Running For Congress
Dr. Alexandra Owensby is running for the Congressional seat in Kentucky's 4th district. In addition to that, she's working at her local hospital during the pandemic. After leaving an abusive marriage, Dr. Owensby put herself through nursing school as a full-time single mother of two, utilizing student loans. While working the night shift to make childcare more affordable, she was able to minimize time away from her children. After graduating and earning her RN S\status, Alexandra obtained a position as an ICU nurse. Though still struggling to make ends meet with a salary below $40,000.00 annually, she was able to make it with assistance from the Children’s Health Insurance Program, due to their zero-dollar co-pays for medicine, dental care, and clinic visits. Dr. Owensby believes strongly that this type of Healthcare is what all American families deserve access to. Alexandra’s journey through hardship and the American education system has inspired her to run for Congress as Kentucky’s 4th District Representative. She is not a politician born into money, nor is she a millionaire business owner looking to boost her image. Dr. Alexandra Owensby’s story is the spark that moves an average American citizen to ask for the opportunity to lead in a city where most do not. Listen in to hear Alexandra share: What inspired her to get involved in politics after being in the medical field The unexpected gifts of running for political office (and why you should do it) How moms are always dropping multiple balls and why it’s totally ok Why being a single mom who put herself through school to get multiple degrees makes her uniquely qualified to be a congresswoman How you can coach your kids to be more resilient during COVID Links mentioned: Connect with and learn more about Alexandra: Alexandra Owensby Thank you to our sponsor: Best Fiends: Download FREE on the Apple App Store or Google Play. 483: Be Bold & Brave In Order To BUILD
I have to tell you something scary... In September 2020, 865,000 women left the work force. In September 2020, 216,000 men left the work force. When women are leaving the work force at 4 times the rate of men, big things are bound to happen. There will be fewer women in corporate leadership. There will be fewer female voices at board room tables and around any meeting tables. There will be fewer women to advocate for women's rights in the office. There will be fewer women to point out inequities across the board in corporate culture. Let's be honest, the inequities work in men's favor, so it's unlikely they will highlight them and change them with fewer women at the office. I'm afraid it will be quite the opposite. While this is scary - really scary - I also have a lot of hope. Because I know that many of the women who walked away from traditional/corporate jobs in September are not ready to walk away from their power & purpose. They are just shifting it. I predict a massive shift in the way women lead over the next few years. Instead of trying to hold space in someone else's company and live by someone else's rules that just don't fly if you're homeschooling/distance learning in a pandemic, we will see women build their own companies. I am SO HERE FOR THIS. Let's BUILD THOSE COMPANIES. Listen in for inspiration to get bold & brave in order to BUILD. Ep 482482: Deborah Porter: Forgiveness and Naked Vulnerability
Deborah Porter is the ultimate list maker, system creator, and investigator of anything that will make things run smoother at home and in life. From new mom to working mom to at home mom to empty nester, she's seen it all. Deborah has been married to her college sweetheart, Clif for 30 years and they have 3 adult children, Chanel (NY), Christian (NY), and Clif (DC). During the early years, she worked hard at not losing sight of her purpose and goals beyond motherhood. Having systems in place allowed her to make room for herself in every phase of life. Deborah believes that motherhood may be the only job you put your absolute all into, knowing that the goal is to work yourself out of that job and provide your children with all they need to successfully launch into their future. Deborah is a Mom Coach with Moms Mentoring Circle where we believe mothering doesn't have to happen alone. Listen in to hear Deborah share: The hope she is seeing in young during this cultural revolution - especially among her own adult children What it was like to meet her father for the first time at age 21 Why she decided to forgive her father and the gifts that came of their relationship as a result What is the biggest foe of forgiveness (naked vulnerability) How you can lean into forgiveness to expand your perspective into order to move forward in your life The 3 gifts you can give your kids to launch them into adulthood The ultimate goal of parenting The importance of collaboration over comparison Her 2 powerful universal messages for moms Links mentioned: Join my Tenacious Mamas Business & Leadership Workshop Connect with Deborah Moms Mentoring Circles on Facebook Moms Mentoring Circles on IG Deborah on Facebook Deborah’s FB Group: Habits of a Confident Mom TED talk: Melody Hobson - Color Blind or Color Brave? Ep 481481: 3 Ways To Be A Better Critical Thinker
I don’t need to tell you there is a lot of noise right now. So. Much. Noise. I want to encourage you (while I’m also encouraging myself, lol) to step back from the noise to become a better critical thinker. It’s easy to let the high emotions of this election season (and the pandemic and the cultural revolution) cause us to react in knee jerk ways. But that is not effective or productive. Instead of knee jerk reactions, the best gift we can give ourselves and those who might benefit from the value of our voice, is to LISTEN. Rather than adding to the noise, listen for a moment before you speak. And then, when you do speak, speak in a way that creates space for others to listen and be in conversation with you. Speak with well formulated thoughts that can actually have impact. Speak with your authentic voice that will allow others to learn and grow with you. And after you speak, sit back and restore your head and your heart in order to get back to listening. Listen in to hear me walk you through this 3 part process LISTEN-SPEAK-RESTORE to see how you can escape the noise, add value to the conversations that matter, and sustain this climate that is bound to remain heavy and heated for quite some time. Your voice has value. Become a better critical thinker to use it to the very best of your ability. Ep 479479: How RBG Will Live On In Us
I found myself gutted the moment I heard. I felt a familiar sinking feeling wash over my entire body. It was the same feeling I had on that fateful day after the election in November of 2016. I texted a girlfriend: Omg. RBG. She replied: I kind of feel like the world is ending. I felt the same. A few minutes later, I saw this RBG quote on social media, "I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability." I texted this quote to my friend and said: This is giving me solace. I feel like we are doing this. She replied: That is true and a good reminder. I've spent the last week reflecting on the gifts RBG gave us. Here are 3 lessons she taught us that will serve as my inspiration to keep working to the best of my ability #everydamnday. I am sharing them with you in hopes they will inspire your life and your legacy, as well. Speak up loud and proud - even when (especially when) you have an unpopular opinion. Trust that your voice has value. Be persistent. We have a massive responsibility to SHOW UP right now. We need to show up for this election season like we have never shown up before. Black lives, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the health of our planet are all in imminent danger right now. The loss of RBG and the implications on the Supreme Court and the future of our country are monumental, to say the least. Listen in to hear Chelsea share: What inspired her 30th birthday bucket list to really conscientiously enjoy the life she’s built Why she chose to homeschool in order to honor her children’s identity and create a safe place for them to experience their identity without being othered How she has embraced defiance and what that has looked like Why she is building her own table instead of trying to find a seat at someone else’s How she’s breaking cultural norms with her art and her work Why she shifted her professional work from social work to henna artist with only $32 to her name The truth about making money from your art Her legacy around “excellence is not optional” Why you need to share your art with the world (and charge real money for it) Links mentioned: Sign Up for my Purposeful & Profitable Podcasting Workshop Check out Chelsea’s Henna Boutique Cardamom & Clove on FB Cardamom & Clove on IG Learn about Hennapreneur Hennapreneur on FB Hennapreneur on IG Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 475475: 4 Ways Podcasting Changed My Life
This time 5 years ago I had just started listening to podcasts. I was inspired and challenged by so many things I learned from the mentors I invited into my ears. I was soaking so many new opportunities for learning and growth. Within a few months, I would decide that I wanted to start my own podcast… someday…. I figured it would take me many months, if not a year or so to get a show off the ground. However, when I shared this dream with another podcaster, the momentum began and I had a show up and running within a matter of 8 weeks. WHOA. I didn’t expect it to happen so fast at all. But my podcaster friend was quick to remind me that there is no reason to wait to share your message or your mission with the world. He was so right. I know there are mamas who tune into me twice a week religiously who think, “Mayyyybe someday I’ll start my own podcast.” Maybe that someday is now??? Podcasting has changed my life in some very profound ways. It has afforded me opportunities for impact and growth that I never saw coming. I has allowed me to build beautiful and deeply profound client relationships, upgrade my entrepreneurial skills (and income), make ridiculously awesome new friends and colleagues, and redefine what I stand for and where I am going. Podcasting can do the same for you. Listen in to hear how podcasting has changed my life and can change yours too. Ep 473473: 3 Ways To Use Your Voice as a Bridge To Impact
Your voice is a gift and a tool. It is the bridge between your brilliance and your impact. To use it is to change the world. To quiet it is to withhold one of your biggest assets from the world. The world needs your voice - because with your voice comes a perspective and a power that can shift how others see things. Your voice has the power to change minds and missions and policy. And when you use your voice you grant others permission to use theirs. How will you use your voice in the remaining critical months of 2020? Will you set firm boundaries with others so you can stop wasting your precious energy on those who do not deserve the best parts of you? Will you start a podcast (yes, please) or a blog or a memoir? Will you run for office or step into a leadership position in your community (YES, PLEASE)? How will you build the bridge between your brilliance and your impact during this critical time? Ep 471471: 5 Ways to Get Unstuck And Find Direction
A member of Tenacious Mamas (my business and leadership mastermind group) recently shared with us that she was feeling stuck - without a sense of direction or much clarity around her goals. These feelings of stuckness and perhaps even confusion around stuckness are so common given what we have all been through this year. Things have been unpredictable for many months now and will continue to be so for many more months. This leads us to feel like we lack control and direction, which makes it hard to connect to a sense of purpose and specific goals. So, how can we keep moving forward? The answer lies in who you’re spending time with, how you’re spending time alone (yes, you need to be spending a little time alone - which may feel nearly impossible in COVID times), and what thought patterns you’re making space for. Ep 467467: 3 Questions That Create Ease, Peace & Power
When you know your core values, you can make decisions with ease, peace, clarity, and power. This is so freeing if you’re someone who has long struggled with analysis paralysis or decision fatigue. How would it feel if you had a ton of clarity around what you want to say YES to and what you want to say NO to? How would it feel if you could confidently express yourself without worrying about what others might think? How would it feel to clearly understand and own who you are becoming as a woman, leader, mom, partner? This would all feel so freeing and liberating right? The key to creating and defining your core values is in asking yourself 3 simple questions. If you can think through these 3 questions, all the sudden so many answers will become clear, if not obvious for you. I have been working on these 3 questions for about 5 years now and I have way less analysis paralysis when I’m making decisions. I worry so much less about other peoples’ opinions. And I can truly see exactly how I show up as a leader in all the different roles in my life. THIS IS POWER. Ep 463463: How To Gain Power With A Proactive Pause
I know I’m not the only one who has experienced a massive regression into reactive tendencies during this wild season of life... Look, I pride myself on being proactive instead of reactive. I coach on this. I thought I had it LOCKED DOWN. But, throw me into a pandemic and a cultural revolution and, well, I’m often finding myself more reactive than I’d like AND feeling like my reactions are more emotionally charged than ever. Just me? Something I’ve been testing lately - with much constraint, because it is not coming easily or naturally, is using a proactive pause before allowing myself to react in a situation where I might be tempted to be less than my best self. I can tell you these proactive pauses have given me so much more power and perspective each day - in the way I parent, the way I frame my day, the way I show up for conversations - all of it. Ep 459459: 5 Ways To Dream Big When Everything Is Unpredictable
Have you lost your mojo? The world is so uncertain right now and there is no end in sight. Around us we see people losing steam and losing hope. People are sitting down. I want to lovingly challenge you to STAY STANDING. Keep moving forward. Even if your steps are barely measurable. Any step forward is a step forward, no matter the size. And a step forward keeps you in momentum, which is key when things are hard. The world can't afford for you to sit down. We can't afford for you to quit dreaming. We need you to keep going. Our country needs you to keep going. Your community needs you to keep going. Your family needs you to keep going. Keep dreaming even if the dream has shifted. It is our dreaming that keeps our spirits up, our heads and hearts engaged, and our souls on fire. You need your dreams now more than ever before. If you're struggling right now, here are a few steps you can take to keep showing up for your dreams: Own what is working and what you do have control over Set some dreamy 3 year goals Make space to be quiet and creative #everydamnday Connect with other women who are still standing and in staying in momentum I’m not going to watch you let your dreams die. Ep 457457: There Is No Going Back To Normal. Thankfully.
What if the beauty of a revolution is that you don’t get to “go back to normal” afterward? Living through a pandemic and a cultural revolution in the same few month period has caused a massive shift. A much needed shift, in so many ways. A shift that is providing hope - if we commit to doing better moving forward. This is not to say there have not been losses and traumas to grieve during this time. The losses have been profound. But, there has also been new levels of awareness and conscientiousness. There has been large scale growth in knowledge and perspective. Many have tremendously expanded their capacity for compassion and empathy, as well as their commitment to being change makers. Glennon Doyle talks about “the Knowing” in her new book, Untamed. Our Knowing is this deep sense inside ourselves that we must learn to listen to if we want to live in alignment with our core values, if we want to do better. We are in a time when we are expanding our Knowing in deep and powerful ways. And this Knowing is leading us to more doing and better doing. Glennon is known for her saying, “First the pain, then the rising.” I want to add to that - first the Knowing, then the doing. As we know more and Know more deeply, we can take action. We have more power. Our voices become louder. We move through the phases of Knowing > Growing > Doing. So, we don’t get to go back. Thankfully. We get to Know, Grow, and Do so much better as we move forward. Listen in to learn 4 essential questions you can ask yourself as you commit to doing better moving forward. Ep 455455: 3 Steps To Create Core Values You Can Confidently Commit To
A few years ago I was at a workshop for business owners and we had to create a list of our core values. We were given a list of 40 or so values to choose from and had to narrow it down to our top 5. I couldn’t do it. I cried. It took me longer than anyone else in the room to narrow my list down to just a few core values I wanted to commit to. The process of discernment around this brought up a lot of emotion around why certain things are important to me. It forced me to look at myself, who I am, how I show up, and how I want to impact the world. While this was hard, it was ultimately so freeing. When I (finally) completed the exercise, I had so much clarity around what was most important to me and why each value was important. These core values have become guiding lights for me as I’ve developed as a woman, a mom, and a CEO. Listen in to hear why committing to a short list of core values is important - even crucial. Learn exactly how to choose a few select core values that will become beacons in times of uncertainty. Ep 449449: The Breakdown and Rebuilding of Self Trust in 2020
I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has broken many (all?) of us over and over. A friend recently introduced me to the idea of being antifragile, based on the work and book Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. She shared with me that in our breaking we have this beautiful opportunity to pick up the pieces and rebuild into something more dynamic and flexible and strong and powerful and thoughtful and conscientious. We will break and we can rebuild and in our rebuilding we can become better than before. We can embrace that we will break over and over in our lifetime and each time something beautiful can come of the way we put the pieces back together. There has been a lot of breaking in 2020. In our breaking, our self trust has been ROCKED. Repeatedly. It is time to rebuild. Listen in to learn 6 ways that you can start to rebuild into a woman who is more dynamic, flexible, strong, powerful, thoughtful, and conscientious. Ep 446446: Abbi Wood: Finding Your Voice Outside of Your Family and Culture
As a woman and person of color, Abbi Wood has heard more than her fair share of what to say and do in the world. At times a whisper, and at times a yell, she's used her voice to create what she calls a full and fulfilling life. Primarily, she works with biz owners to help them find their voice (or, as she calls it, uncover their biznality) so that marketing and talking about their business feels like a natural extension of themselves vs an out-of-body experience. I reached out to Abbi after hearing her speak at an event. She was there to speak about helping women find their voices in their businesses and brands. But what was so compelling about her talk was her own story about finding her own voice after being silenced by her family, pushed into an arranged marriage, and moving across the world to build a completely new and independent life. Listen in to hear Abbi share: Her experience being raised in Pakistani family in England Her experience feeling like she didn’t fit in anywhere - in her brown family or in her white world How her voice was quieted by her family and culture Her path into an arranged marriage How she ended up secretly on birth control while also in fertility treatment How she got out of her arranged marriage and found her voice How she helps women find their voices, embrace their stories and create their biznality Links mentioned: Connect with Abbi: Abbi Wood Abbi and Biznality on FB Thank you to our sponsor: Best Fiends: Download FREE on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Ep 445445: Mastering Pandemic Decisions: Postpone, Pivot or Repurpose?
In the last 3 months, we have had the opportunity to postpone, pivot, and repurpose nearly every aspect of our lives - over and over again. It has been hard, heavy, confusing, and disorienting to say the least. But 12 weeks in, I’d say we have begun to master these shifts. We are able to take a critical look at the opportunities in front of us each day and assess: “Is this a time to postpone, pivot, or repurpose.” I know these decisions are becoming more clear for me, as I make them over and over. I’m able to make them with increased ease and confidence. Today, I’ll share how I’m discerning when to postpone vs pivot vs repurpose. I’ll use a few recent family and business examples, the biggest and most scary (and most successful) being the massive shift to repurpose Shameless Mom Con 2020 to the Shameless Mom Con Collective. Ep 443443: How To Reboot Your Body In A Pandemic
I’m wondering how many of you, like me, saw the beginning of this pandemic as similar to a series of snow days or a long weekend? Perhaps you let typical habits and routines go in order to hunker down with late-night TV binging, extra treats, lotsa wine, little movement, and a bit of disregard for what really fuels your body. Perhaps as you got deeper into this weird and unsettling season of life, you had less and less time to yourself. You stopped doing restorative activities that allowed you to have moments to yourself to think and breath - probably because there was no way to actually be alone. We are now months into this season of life and many of us are suffering because we have let go of the habits that truly serve us: fueling our bodies well, moving our bodies to process stress, and resting/restoring when we need time and space to ourselves. Listen in to hear how you can get your body back into a groove that supports the energy you want to carry each day - and gifts you the space you need to keep your head above water.
