Ep 328328: The Seahawks go from not doing much in three days to doing something in free agency
It's once again that time of year where we hope that the Seahawks will go after some big name targets and free agency and come away somewhat disappointed. Coming into Wednesday, Seattle had signed another cornerback castoff from the San Francisco 49ers and signed Poona Ford to stay in Seattle for two more years. Neither the offensive line and defensive line were addressed. Not until the second half of the recording of this latest show. After talking about missed opportunities in free agency, we look back on some of the worst takes regarding the drama surrounding Russell Wilson. We have multiple theories to choose from on why Russ was not named in the letter to season ticket holders and Adam likely nails the easiest explanation. We also diagnose how Sam Darnold entered the quarterback conversation this past week after Pete Carroll's quotes from December were used to support two different trade proposals. In the second half of the show, we get news that the Seahawks have acquired an offensive lineman from the Las Vegas Raiders. He wasn't the one discussed in the first half, but we take a look at some of the highlights of the move and talk about what it could mean for Damien Lewis. The Seahawks are also signing a veteran tight end, but it highlights a key area the Seahawks aren't taking advantage of when it comes to contracts to try and squeeze multiple moves into this offseason. Mike Silver lands in the Do Better segment for what was probably the worst take about the Russell Wilson situation, and Adam takes issue with characterizing Deshaun Watson's issues with the Houston franchise as anything remotely similar to Russ in Seattle. Better at life honors go to the 1984 Seahawks defense for some overdue recognition and to the "Acid Queen" as Adam rebounds from last week's call out to do better. Support the show Get in the Flock! Ep 327327: Does Pete Carroll have a messaging problem?
This week show begins with a two-minute rundown of all the biggest stories that Adam has taken note of from the past week. Notably, Justin Britt signing with the Texans. Then we get into the clip behind one of the biggest stories of the week that was reported incorrectly . . . that the Seahawks are "shopping" Russell Wilson. When, after clarification, they were actually returning phone calls. Dan Patrick, the host behind the interview that kicked off the offseason of drama, joined 950 KJR in Seattle and had a couple of statements that offer a national perspective of the situation with the Seahawks. If people in the national sports media have the idea that Pete Carroll isn't "all in" on Russell Wilson, then maybe the Seahawks coach has a problem when it comes to public messaging about his quarterback. In news that came after recording the show, Carlos Dunlap was released by the Seahawks on Monday, but our discussion about relating his contract to J.J. Watt may actually provide some context to his departure. If Dunlap wasn't willing to restructure to a deal similar to Watt, Seattle may see that as the ceiling for the market for finding a free agents at that spot or if Dunlap were to return after testing the market. In the second half of the episode, we respond to some comments from the Flock that came in regarding the current situation in Seattle. As people organize into Team Russ vs Team Pete, is it time to give up on the idea of being Team Work This Catfish Out and team up? Find out why Britni is no longer allowed near acid and why Michael Pittman may not catch many passes from Carson Wentz this year. We close out the show with some advice from OJ Simpson and award Better at Life honors to Aaron Levine for his recent coverage of Russell Wilson. Ep 326326: The Russell Wilson offseason drama is not going away
It's a single-topic show for this episode of the podcast. Because, on Thursday morning, Michael-Shawn Dugar released an article on The Athletic that detailed the timeline from this year and some of the details from previous years that provide additional context to some of Russell Wilson's recent comments. The point of the article is that, from Wilson's perspective, it's more than just getting offensive linemen - it's about winning a certain way. We hit on some of the main points from the story and, while it still seems incredibly unlikely a trade would happen, the more important thing is that Pete Carroll and Russ have to communicate more clearly with each other, rather than doing it through the media. Ep 325325: Nick Wright spawns 'masterpiece' trade to send the Seahawks to the NFC West cellar
As it turns out there's a bit more discussion we can have on Russell Wilson without it being a repeat of last week. We talk about the Josina Anderson tweet updating us all that Russell Wilson isn't getting traded and agree with Joe Fann's assessment that what it really means is that all is perfect in Seattle. Russell Wilson hit 3 on the scale of unhappy offseason Russ last year when he said he wanted stars, and this year he's turned it up to 4. Still a long way to go before we're in Deshaun Watson territory. Nick Wright of FS1 came up with the "perfect fake trade" that would send Seattle to the bottom of the NFC West and cost Pete Carroll and John Schneider their jobs. Seahawks fans aren't going to be happy with Nick Bosa on their team with Watson leading the 49ers to division titles. At least Mike Florio came up with some trade ideas that at least get Seattle a pick of the top two quarterbacks from the 2021 draft. If management were to accept either of those, they'd have to be certain we'd be watching Seattle compete for a title in the next three years. Free agency is around the corner, and Zach Ertz's name is coming up in possible trade talks. Carlos Dunlap is on the mind of some Seahawks fans to make cap space, but some are willing to suggest that money could be better used to bring another Bengals player to Seattle to be the third option at wide receiver. We announce the top 10 teams from the pick'em league this year. If you participated and want to be in the running for the 2020 James Harrison Award, you can go to http://tinypiecesofseahawksstuff.com and comment with your team name or comment in the post from the Ring of Honor group on Facebook. Our thoughts go out to those in Texas who are recovering following the massive power outages in Texas. Adam's passion about his problems with the power grid electrify a segment of 'Do Better' and Brandan goes after the NCAA. Better at life honors go to NASA and a plea for them to create an amazing fund raising idea, as well as the current and former Seahawks who are helping feed families in Texas who were impacted by the recent disaster. Ep 324324: Russell Wilson is focused on the right priority (and is not getting traded)
Wasting no time with offseason drama from the Seahawks this offseason, news came out on the day of the Super Bowl that teams were making calls to Seattle about their interest in Russell Wilson. Though the news expressly came along with the disclaimer that the Seahawks, of course, weren't interested. Yet, by Wednesday, there were sports betting sites laying odds as to which team Wilson would be going to next. So where did this come from? We pull the quotes from former Seahawks receiver Brandon Marshall and Russell Wilson's quotes from the Dan Patrick Show that seemed to generate most of this discussion. Interestingly enough, nowhere in those discussions were any kind of hints that Wilson is demanding to be traded or suggesting that he's unhappy with the team. Instead, he's clearly focused on what Seattle needs to do this offseason to improve - acquiring talent to put together an offensive line that can protect their star quarterback. Considering what we all witnessed in Super Bowl 55, that should be the goal for every team in the NFL. Because we saw the league MVP from 2018 and the league MVP from 2020 both struggle against the Tampa Bay Bucs defensive front. Russell Wilson is focused on the right priority and the Seahawks front office should have that same focus as well! We also discuss the Matt Stafford trade to the Los Angeles Rams and what it means for the division. Adam brings a historical perspective at quality quarterbacks who have made mid- or late-career moves. Plus, we take another shot at nicknaming the new offensive coordinator and the results from an in-depth data analysis on some important career tendencies. We're running a promotion for those who want to help the show and get a little something extra. Those who sign up for annual support at getintheflock.com can get stickers at $1 per month annually. A podcast patch at $3 per month annually and a pair of logo stainless steel pint glass for anyone above $5 who moves to an annual subscription. Plus, we're not running the "uncatfished" version of the show in the Patreon feed for those who have been asking for that. Do better call outs this week go to Adam's truck for continuing to find ways to uniquely break down, and how people need to learn how to ask Kam Chancellor the correct questions when they see him in person. Better at life honors go to the NFL's Man of the Year and to the crew at the Around the NFL podcast for blowing off Super Bowl coverage to honor one of their former co-hosts. Ep 323323: New slogan for Seahawks new OC - Hammer the Poona
The Seattle Seahawks have announced their new offensive coordinator and Shane Waldron will come up from Los Angeles to join the Seattle Seahawks. The worst part about this move is that it forces us to say some things that sound like there are some positive components of the Rams offense. But the best part about is may be that it may signal a compliment to Russell Wilson's game that could help the team improve. However, it does come with some risk. Ahead of this episode, we reached out to our members of the Flock and the Ring of Honor group of Facebook to get some questions from the group on the things that you want to talk about. Before we get there, we talk a bit about the NFC Championship game and the call by the refs and the fourth down decision and how those moments impacted the game. In our mailbag segment, we talk about the Seahawks free agents the team could be most likely to keep some players we'd be okay with moving on from, and where the cap money should be focused on in the offseason when it comes to free agency. With NFC West rivals looking to upgrade at quarterback, we talk about the worst possible outcome in the division this offseason. Plus, we rank some of the sexiest deep balls of Russell Wilson's career. One email even inspires our new slogan we'd like to see pitched to the Seahawks new offensive coordinator. In our Do Better segment, Falcons new head coach Arthur Smith is recognized for dropping the most cliches ever in an introductory "hype" video. Aaron Rodgers gets called out for passing on accountability following the game against Tampa Bay. Better at life honor go to Marshawn Lynch and to the Lions new head coach who, by the most recent press conference, appears to be the anti-Arthur Smith. Ep 322322: Schotty out as OC, Pete Carroll closes out the 2020 season
As the 2020 season closes out for the Seahawks, we recap the news from this past week. The biggest news is that the Seahawks are moving on from Brian Schottenheimer as the team's offensive coordinator. John Schneider apparently isn't going to the Detroit Lions after all. Instead, he signs with the Seahawks through 2027. However, Seattle did lose one name from their front office to the Carolina Panthers. Were there any clues from Pete Carroll's press conference to close out the season that suggests that Schottenheimer was on the way out? There were certainly clues about the direction the Seahawks coach wants to head in. As much as there are concerns about it shifting too heavily toward the run, Pete was very clear about it not being a monumental shift. He wants to run teams out of playing two-deep safeties, he wants to improve on third down conversions, and he wants to continue to be explosive in the passing game. Russell Wilson also gave his final press conference while vacationing from Mexico. It was a different tone from the Seahawks quarterback than we've heard in previous seasons, and he wanted to make sure we all know how critical it is that he's a part of the process with hiring the new offensive coordinator and being "on the same page." But who should the new offensive coordinator be? We work through all the names that have been projected and ultimately settle on one name we haven't heard many Seahawks fans talking about. Adam has some thoughts on Seahawks players who were talking about how difficult one particular aspect of the season was to overcome. Brandan goes after Texans fans for coming up with a terrible idea for a cause they chose to march about near the stadium in Houston. Better at life honors go to a man for peacefully residing in an airport for months and to a couple of teams for making the choice to hire defensive coordinators for their head coaching vacancies. Ep 321321: CATFISH the Rams!
Was this week's loss to the Rams in the playoffs the most disappointing and frustrating performance of the Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson era, or was it the most predictable? Either way it was the first home loss in the playoffs since the 2004 playoffs, which coincidentally was also against the Rams franchise. Russell Wilson, with two healthy thumbs, was outplayed by a quarterback who looked like he could feel his heartbeat in his throwing thumb. Pete Carroll passed over opportunities to go for it on fourth down early in the game, but then when his hand was forced the offense narrowly missed a delay of game only to get a false start. Penalties cost the Seahawks the game, turnovers cost the team the game, and Wilson unable to respond from questions about his play from the previous eight weeks cost the Seahawks the game. Despite the Rams defense playing extremely well, we discuss a variety of ways the offense could have attacked their rival and either stayed true to the slogan or by making other adjustments. We'll look at Pete Carroll's post-game comments in the next episode, but this week we discuss how Carroll's philosophy may be worth questioning after multiple seasons of early playoff exits. Could the offensive coordinator be on the hot seat? We talk about possible coaching moves as well as how we'll likely see more questions this offseason surrounding Wilson than any other season. Those questions are already beginning to be thrown out there on Twitter as highlighted in Do Better and there are deeper questions about whether humans are alone in the universe that we may hear more about this summer. Better at Life honors go to Tony Romo for offering some comedic relief following the Seahawks playoff game and to the Seahawks Swab Team getting recognition for their efforts this season. Ep 320320: Seahawks passing defense goes from historic worst to 31st
The regular season has come to a close for the Seahawks following a 26-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers down in Glendale, Arizona. At the midpoint of the season, we were extremely concerned about a Seattle defense that was giving up passing yards at an historic rate. Not only were they worst in the NFL in 2020, they were on pace to be the worst in NFL history. If not for the 3-yard touchdown pass by the 49ers in garbage time, the Seahawks would have finished ahead of the Detroit Lions for the 30th spot. However, there has also been another turnaround. The offense went from scoring 30+ points a game through the first eight games to only having one game above 30 in the second half. But improving the defense through the acquisition of Carlos Dunlap and the 2nd play of Jamal Adams and D.J. Reed offering a big improvement over the first half of the season. It's possible to play both good defense and score 30 points or more. So what's going on? We discuss what changed from the first half to the second half and talk about which quarterback we'll see the Rams play on Saturday. In the second half of the show, we talk about the preferred route through the playoffs. We discuss the news of John Schneider getting interest from the Detroit Lions to become their general manager. Our 'Do Better' segment features talk around the Philadelphia Eagles and the reaction to their performance in the final game of the NFL season. Better at life honors go to a legend of sports radio and to a New York Giants draft pick that had been holding onto an old tweet from Skip Bayless. Ep 319319: The Seattle Seahawks are NFC West Champions again
The Seattle Seahawks finally had a convincing victory over a Sean McVay coached Los Angeles Rams team. Not only that, but they did it on the back of a defensive unit that had questions surrounding it early this season. Is it time to give Ken Norton some credit for the turnaround? The 20-9 win over the Rams earned Seattle their first NFC West title since 2016, but was it done in a way to improve Adam's mood from the previous week? After all, the structure of the game wasn't much different. We look at some of the third downs throughout the game and it was one area where Russell Wilson struggled early on in the game. Next up is a San Francisco 49ers franchise that Seattle has dominated throughout the Russell Wilson era. Kyle Shannahan has managed two wins against this Seahawks team (the same number that Jim Harbaugh had). Injuries continue to plague the 49ers, but George Kittle will be in the game and C.J. Beathard has done well to avoid throwing any interceptions. But Kittle will be his only big name target with both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk out for this Sunday's game. Even with injuries, Seattle should expect a physical game, particularly from the 49ers defense. In the second half of the show, we talk about the departure of Damon 'Snacks' Harrison and the return of Luke Willson. We also discuss a number of playoff scenarios for Seattle and why there is the potential for a big difference between having the 2nd and 3rd seed in the playoffs. D.K.O. earned the top spot in the pick'em league this week, and Jeremy comes in with the answer regarding career rushing leaders for the Seahawks. Adam calls out an anonymous Fansided article for daring to consider life for the Seahawks without Russell Wilson as Brandan brings evidence as to why Bobby Wagner should have earned a fumble recovery at the end of the Rams game. Better at life honors go to the Tennessee Titans social media team for their injury designation of one of their players and to the Seahawks franchise for earning an NFC West title in the face of different areas of adversity. Ep 318318: Time for DK Metcalf to get his revenge
The Seattle Seahawks earned a playoff spot and the Rams were beaten by a previously winless team on the same weekend. Was a 20-15 victory to lock a playoff berth a better feeling than seeing a rival lose in that way? Up 20-3 against the Football Team, it looked like there was potential for a second straight dominant win. Instead, it came down to a final drive by Washington that could have given them a late lead over Seattle. Where did things start to turn? We take a look at the four offensive drives and the way the team played defensively in the fourth quarter. This Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams looks different than the matchup earlier in the season. Shaquille Griffin has returned from injury, the pass rush has shown consistency since the previous matchup, and Alex Collins won't be finishing the game as the leading rusher. But the main thing we want to see is a revenge game from DK Metcalf. A response from him would prove that the previous game against the Rams defense was a fluke, and would help to put him ahead of Steve Largent in the record books. We also discuss the thing the Jets did successfully against the Rams defense and how it's a strategy Russell Wilson can't be expected to take advantage of. In the second half of the show we talk about some of the latest Seahawks transactions. Tight end Greg Olsen could return from injury this week. Despite Adam's earlier frustrations with the team, he struggles to place other teams ahead of Seattle in the power rankings. Do Better call outs go to the NFL for continuing to throw road blocks at Josh Gordon's return to the NFL as well as the Pro Bowl selection committee for a pair of Seahawks snubs. Ep 317317: An A minus for the 2nd-biggest blowout of the Pete Carroll era
We all remember the biggest blowout of the Pete Carroll era. The 58-0 win over the Arizona Cardinals back in 2012 was one of a string of performances by Seattle leading up to the playoffs in Russell Wilson's rookie season where everything was clicking for the team. Sandwiched between that game and the Super Bowl 48 victory is the latest win over the New York Jets. Should the Seahawks get credit for beating a team they were expected to easily defeat? We recognize some of the biggest performances on defense as well as Jamal Adams record-setting sack. Russell Wilson looked much better against the Jets than he had in previous weeks, but now the Seahawks offensive line is facing one of it's biggest tests of the season with the defensive line of the Washington Football Team. Second overall pick Chase Young is coming off a game where he recovered a fumble for a touchdown. He's one of a few pass rushers Russ will have to worry about this week. One piece of news to watch will be if Alex Smith will be able to bounce back from his injured calf this week in time for Sunday. With a win against Washington, the Seahawks can clinch a playoff berth before facing two of their division rivals in the final two weeks. We discuss why it's critical for the Seahawks to, at the very least, earn a division title this season. Jeremy calls in with a new trivia question and breaks down some of the top career rushing leaders from the wide receiver position. We get into the "greatest game of the NFL season" in Adam's Do Better as Brandan talks about the Patrick Mahomes 'futurists.'Better at life honors go to a successful space mission by Japan and to Kelly Victoria for bringing a magical world to life in the eyes of a 4-year-old girl and in return had an incredibly rewarding experience of her own after coming across a fairy garden. p>Register for the 2020 Podcast Pick'em League Pick'em League Home at CBS Sports Post 'Go Hawks' in the comments for the latest Tiny Pieces of Seahawks Stuff (TPoSS) Giveaway Support the show Get in the Flock! Ep 316316: Great. Seahawks fans have to worry about this Jets game now
After watching what was the worst Russell Wilson performance we've seen this season, this show's listeners apparently want to throw us, the hosts of the podcast, under the bus. It's hard to blame them, because a lot about this last game didn't make a lot of sense, so we've got too point fingers at something. While it's difficult to point to the exact issue with Russ, we give it our best attempt from what we've seen looking back at the game. Coming up on Sunday, Seahawks fans now have to worry about and wonder if Seattle can get things back together well enough to get a win over the Jets and avoid being swept by the state of New York. Sam Darnold is coming off the best game of his season where he only turned the ball over three times, the defense played well enough for about 15 seconds short of a full 60 minutes to win, and the Jets are likely going to be without their best running back and wide receiver. So what are we worried about again? In the second half of the show, we take a look around the division and also talk about some of the some of the latest team news regarding Josh Gordon and Rashaad Penny. We discuss the aftermath of the unboxing of the B.J. Finney pants that came in the mail last week. (Note: we are still taking some suggestions on what the fate of those should be.) Congratulations go out to Hyde and Seek and What A Hasselbeck for their pick'em performances the last two weeks. Also a congrats to Doc Scott on a career milestone and release of his Essential Mix on BBC Radio. Ep 315315: Wilson to Metcalf connection slays the Eagles
The Seattle Seahawks offense looked flat through the fourth quarter and even at other times of the game, but thankfully they had DK Metcalf who appears to have some sort of vendetta against the Eagles. The story of Jim Schwartz coming up to him ahead of the game and comparing him to Calvin Johnson was well documented, but Metcalf's postgame comments about how Philly could have been his home also seems to strike a nerve for the sophomore receiver. Even though we expected to see improvements from the defense in this game, it demonstrated the team's ability to look how it should when the pass rush, linebackers and corners are able to complement one another. We also discuss the perspective some fans and some in the media are still downplaying the seasons that Metcalf and Jamal Adams are having for the Seahawks this year. Looking ahead to the game against the Giants, we talk about a couple of their players to watch on defense. Daniel Jones looks like an injury suffered against the Bengals will keep him out of the lineup this week. Jones has been able to make up for some of the deficiencies in the Giants offensive line, so with Colt McCoy now in the lineup it may be a challenge to get the ball to a more talented receiving corps than the Seahawks saw last week. In the second half of the show we talk about the San Francisco 49ers move to Arizona for their next couple "home" games. Talk a little bit about the Broncos and how they looked without a quarterback against the Saints and how this week's win over the Eagles could come into play for playoff seeding. 'Do Better' callouts go out to Bruce Arians and to the Seahawks official auction site. Better at Life honors go to the continued monolith hijinks discussed last week and to the Detroit Lions Reddit community for honoring the quarterback that helped force Matt Patricia out of town. Ep 314314: The Seahawks somehow fix their defense with a 'powerful' meeting
The Seattle Seahawks are now 7-3 and coming off a 28-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. For the second time this season, we watched a Seahawks defense shut out an opponent in the first quarter of a football game. It was their best defensive performance in terms of points allowed in the 2020 season. What did it take to help turn things around for the defense? By accounts from the team in press conferences this week, they simply held a meeting where players talked about what their jobs were in particular situations. The defense also got an assist from a Seahawks offense that held the ball for a majority of the game. It kept the Arizona Cardinals offense off the field. Carlos Hyde gave Seattle a dynamic on offense that we haven't seen in previous weeks. We also take a look at some of the moments that both kept the Cardinals in the game, and helped the Seahawks expand their lead late in the game. The Seahawks move into a four-game stretch of the season where anything other than going undefeated will be a huge disappointment. The next four teams on the schedule (Eagles, Giants, Jets, Football Team) have combined to win a total of two games outside of their own division. With that in mind, the Seahawks need to have some statement wins and rack up stats, especially if Russell Wilson is going to be back in the conversation for MVP. It's not just for personal awards, it's to get the team prepared for a Week 16 rematch with the Rams. In the second half of the show we take a look back at the previous five weeks and why 2-3 feels like a disappointing result despite some of the issues Seattle faced with injuries. We get into the pick'em winners from the past two weeks. In the 'Do Better' segment we talk about how North Korea may or may not be militarizing dolphins and what DeAndre Hopkins was crying about after a Cardinals loss to the Dolphins. Ep 313313: Cleansing of the Hawkra ahead of TNF
It was an ugly game against the Rams that I'm sure most of us prefer not to think about too much. Russell Wilson rarely has back-to-bad games where mistakes end up costing the Seahawks the football game and three in a row is unheard of. So this episode is dedicated to a full Hawkra cleansing of our flock ahead of the Thursday Night Football matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Sure, it seems like the Cardinals are in a good place after winning in the final seconds against the Bills, and we get into all the reasons why it feels like things are going in the opposite direction for the Seahawks. Now we get back to neutral ahead of this game though. It's a shorter show this week as we will likely double up with shows on the 'mini-bye' after the game against the Cardinals. (Note from Brandan: No Better at Life mentions this week, so I'm making a prediction in the show notes here that Adam probably has a better at life locked in for the SpaceX astronauts on the next show.) Ep 312312: Seahawks magic number is 35, Dolphins achieve 'perfect record' vs NFC West
At the midpoint of the season, the Seahawks are 6-2, but they found another way to lose in frustrating fashion. According to Adam, this was even more frustrating than the loss to the Cardinals, because the team played whatever the opposite is of complementary football. Instead, each phase of the game contributed to something that made it more difficult for another phase. Whether it was giving up a big return on special teams, untimely turnovers, or making a terrible decision on defense when it mattered most, each phase found a way to contribute to the loss. But it's not just on the players, or on the coaches, there is blame to share throughout the organization for some of what we're seeing on the field. Fortunately, for a defense that seems to have most of their difficulty with mobile quarterbacks, there aren't many left on the schedule. Jared Goff is the next man up to face this Seahawks defense. Can the team make the necessary adjustments based on issues we've seen in the recent loss to the Bills and some of the previous games as well? Will an improved offensive line be able to slow down Aaron Donald? But maybe the most fun matchup will be seeing DK Metcalf going up against Jalen Ramsey. The last team to face the Los Angeles Rams was the Miami Dolphins. Not only did Miami win that game, but they also beat the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Sam Marcoux, of the podcast Welcome to Perfectville, joins the show to take a victory lap for their "perfect record" in the NFC West. Also in the second half of the show, we remembered to announce the latest winner of the Tiny Piece of Seahawks Stuff, but we forgot to bring the latest trivia question (even though Jeremy explained the origin of all the work that went into it). Congratulations go out to Iupati Mouth for the win in the pick'em league this week. Philip Rivers and a Seahawks petitioner land in the Do Better segment this week. Ep 311311: Wagner, Wilson and Metcalf dominate 49ers, reinforcements to arrive for Seahawks vs Buffalo
The Seahawks put together what was probably their most satisfying victory over the season, because they did it against their rival San Francisco 49ers. Of course Niners fans will complain about injuries, the turf, Russell Wilson being so good at football that it's somehow unfair, DK Metcalf having more abs than should be legally allowed, and Bobby Wagner keeping a secret stash of voodoo dolls he can deploy as he's running through their offensive line. We could go on. Seattle travels to Buffalo this weekend to take on Josh Allen and the Bills. If the Seahawks can put up 25 points, which according to stats off the top of Adam's head is roughly half of what our team usually scores with Russell Wilson against the Bills, then they'll join a small club of high scoring offenses through eight regular season games. On defense, we will likely see the addition of Carlos Dunlap and the return of Jamal Adams and Rasheem Green. In the second half of the show, we talk about Russell Wilson and the mentorship role that he's demonstrating this year. Who are the other NFC contenders for the top seed? Tampa Bay and Green Bay are looking like the only two serious challengers. In Do Better, we're talking about analysts who are suggesting that Wilson was inviting a helmet shot late in the game against the 49ers and a clothing store that dared to suggest love and unity among our fellow Americans this week. Better at life honors go to NASA for reconnecting with Voyager 2 and to Bobby Wagner for his NFC defensive player of the week honors. Ep 310310: Dunlap trade comes at a time for a change in Seahawks mindset on defense
Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals showed one thing about this Seahawks defense. It's not an issue that can be fixed by a change in defensive coordinator. It's not an issue that can be fixed by the addition of Carlos Dunlap. It's going to take another shift in Pete Carroll's mindset about playing more aggressively in some key moments. Carroll already made the shift on offense, so it's possible this change can happen mid season. We discuss some of the reasons why the change is so important especially with the way the team is operating on offense. There were some positive takeaways from the game against the Cardinals to discuss. DK Metcalf had an incredible play, but Tyler Lockett caught 15 passes for 200 yards and there's barely been a peep about some of his incredible catches coming out of that game. We also look ahead to the matchup with the San Francisco 49ers and why this game is important to have a bounce back game in the division. Antonio Brown is going to the Bucs and Pro Football Talk suggested that it was some trick by the Seahawks to offer up fake interest in Brown to help make another team in the league interested. From there the discussion takes a turn to national reporters versus local beat reporters. Congratulations to Deep balls better than rainbows as the pick'em league winner for Week 7. In Do Better, we call out the inevitable shots that were fired Russell Wilson's direction regarding his MVP candidacy and a strange characterization of the Seahawks acquisition of Carlos Dunlap. Better at life honors go to a neighborly good deed and to our quarterback for continuing to do great things in the community. Ep 309309: Seahawks at the top of the NFC, Antonio Brown linked to Seattle again
The Seattle Seahawks are coming off of their bye week. This past week, two games in particular worked out very well for Seattle. The 49ers beat the Rams, which put some room between LA and the Seahawks in the NFC West standings. The Green Bay Packers also lost, which put Seattle at the top of the NFC. They now go on to face the Arizona Cardinals on a weekend that the final two undefeated AFC teams play. The matchup with the Cardinals was supposed to be a chance to see how Jordyn Brooks and Jamal Adams could offer the dynamic the Seahawks wanted to match up against the NFC West. That may have to wait, but Snacks Harrison and Mychal Kendricks could be on the field for the first time in 2020. The 5-0 start for the Seahawks means that Russell Wilson has now had a five-game win streak in six of his nine seasons in the NFL. Looking at his attempts per game, it has been a steady increase from the first streak in 2012 to the current streak in 2020. In the second half of the show, we talk about the decision to keep fans out of the stadium until late November. We also discuss the importance of making sure we are accountable to our superstitions, after too many Floridians trimmed their beards leading to the benching of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Congratulations to The Jordyn Brookings Institution, the Week 6 pick'em winner. Ep 308308: The Seattle Seahawks are 5-0 for the first time in history
For the first time in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks are undefeated through the first five games of the season. This week's show starts off with a fair amount of concern over the health of our fellow fans. Just how many more of these kind of endings can Pete Carroll expect us to endure? While the first half against the Vikings wasn't much to get excited about, the ability of the defense to hold Minnesota to only 13 points to start the game may have been the most important factor of that half. The Seahawks only needed five good minutes of offense in the second half to help get the team to their first 5-0 start. Looking at the offense, DK Metcalf not only had the game-winning touchdown reception, he added another touchdown along with a huge 40-yard catch on fourth down. It was an incredible game for Metcalf. We also highlight some of the biggest moments from Russell Wilson on the final drive of the game, and some of the other members of the Seahawks offense. Looking ahead to the next four games, Seattle has a stretch of three road games in four weeks, and their first run through their NFC West rivals coming up. We discuss the outlook for the team moving forward. In the second half of the show, we take a look back at two of DCH's biggest predictions that he was able to reverse jinx into existence. Anyone critical of his performance last week owes an apology. Congratulations to Joseph V.T. who won last month's tiny piece of Seahawks stuff and congrats to Tonbridgehawk for winning the pick'em league for Week 5. Ep 307307: Good teams don't let bad teams score touchdowns (when it matters)
The Seattle Seahawks are 4-0 for the second time in franchise history. They've also scored 30+ points over four games for the second time in the Russell Wilson era and the third time in franchise history. The other two stretches were in 2015 and back in 1986. Joining the show to talk about the 31-23 victory over the Dolphins is Doug Chanselle-Hary, or DCH as he is often referred to on the show. Russell Wilson threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns, and despite continuing to be on pace to tie Peyton Manning's record for touchdown passes in a season, we gripe about some of the touchdown passes that were left out there on the field. Mixed reviews on the defense this week from the crew as there was only one punt on the day for Miami. However, they turned the ball over twice and they managed to hold Miami to field goals up until the point the Seahawks were up by two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter. Coming up this Sunday night is a matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have not won a game against Pete Carroll since he joined the Seahawks back in 2010. In fact, Carroll has only lost one game in his career as a head coach or defensive coordinator versus Minnesota. If the Seahawks are going to win this game, stopping Dalvin Cook will be a critical component. In fact, this team matches up very closely with what Seattle saw against Dallas in Week 3. In the second half of the show, we talk about the impacts of the virus on the league this past week and how it has the potential derail the season. Congrats to Mentals Bodies Chicken (a former league champion) for getting the top spot this week with 14 games correct in the pick'em league. Ep 306306: Pete Carroll has conditioned Seahawks fans to expect and appreciate good defense
The Seattle Seahawks are 3-0 for the first time since 2013. So why does it feel different three games into the season than it did back then? One difference is that Russell Wilson has now set himself apart from the league and has some of the best weapons on offense of his career. But the defense has given up more passing yards to opponents than any other team in history. The 2011 Patriots and Packers and the 2018 Chiefs were playoff teams that had similar issues in the secondary through the first three games and went on two win a lot of regular season games. We take a look at what that means historically for a team's Super Bowl chances. We also get into the highlights from the last game against the Cowboys, the players who stood out, and some of the strange moments from Sunday's game. Sam Marcoux of the Perfectville Podcast joins us to preview Sunday's matchup with the Miami Dolphins. While Ryan Fitzpatrick may not be quite at the level of quarterback's the Seahawks have faced in the first three weeks, he has some significant weapons at receiver and had no problem torching the Jacksonville Jaguars defense on Thursday Night Football. Sam tells us why Seahawks fans should be crossing their fingers that his post-game attire is a red Hawaiian shirt. Congratulations go out to pick'em winners from the last two weeks. Sideline Sockeye for Week 2 and Unlimited Flocker for Week 3. In the Do Better segment, we learn there's a canary in the coal mine when it comes to finding power rankings that you should ignore. We also learn that Cowboys fans can tend to get litigious when their team is losing. Ep 305305: It's Raining Sexy Deep Balls in Seattle
The final play of the game will define the latest matchup between the Seahawks and Patriots, as Seattle earned the 35-30 victory. However, listening to national programs, you'd think Cam Newton had the breakout performance of his professional career. Cam may deserve a mention, but Russell Wilson should get the credit as the best quarterback in the game with his five touchdown passes to five different receivers. The balance of the offense shifted back closer to what we've come to expect from Coach Pete Carroll, but we're continuing to see some new things, too. Wilson didn't shy away from the challenge of going up against the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year either. Because they went right at Stephon Gilmore, this game will be remembered as the one where we knew DK Metcalf is on his way to stardom. Looking ahead to the Dallas Cowboys matchup, the Seahawks are going to need to stop Ezekiel Elliot both on the ground and through their screen game. Can the line stop Zeke the same way they held up Newton on Sunday night? If they can't, then it will be on Russ to continue to put up points. He should be able to do it after seeing the Cowboys defensive line underachieve in back-to-back weeks. In the second half of the show, we look around the NFC West from this past week. We also congratulate The Biggest Little Flocker on the Week 2 Pick'em victory. NFL defenses throughout the league need to do better, and so does a Patriots receiver who is trying to erase a nickname that he clearly earned and there is definitive documentary evidence for the reason why. Finally, the Seahawks offensive coordinator and Mr. Unlimited himself both land Better at Life honors this week. Ep 304304: Seahawks first game showcases new dynamics on offense and defense
Anyone questioning if Pete Carroll could drastically shift the dynamics of the offense and defense from last season to this season got their concerns answered in the Seahawks Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Their 38-25 victory featured an aggressiveness on offense rarely seen in previous years. No give up plays on 2nd and long, going for it all on fourth down while the Seahawks had the lead, and Russell Wilson looking as though he was in complete command of the offense. Defensively, Carroll used Jamal Adams to generate pressure in a way we haven't seen him use that position in the past. We saw nickel and dime defenses. With those exciting changes, there remain areas of significant concern. With the Seahawks leading by three scores and a relatively immobile quarterback in Matt Ryan, Seattle's defensive line still wasn't able to get into the backfield with any regularity. Late in the game we didn't see punishing runs by Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde to help put the game away. Atlanta had early success running the football and in the second half they completely abandoned the idea testing Seattle's defensive tackles. Against the Patriots, the Seahawks front seven will be tested defensively. New England ran the ball early against the Dolphins and then opened up a passing game in the second half that allowed them to move the ball very effectively against Miami. The Patriots strength on defense is in their secondary, but containing Russell Wilson has never been something New England has had much success with. Let's see if the trend of what we saw on offense against the Falcons continues in Week 2. In the second half of the show take a look down at the 2019 NFC Champions in the cellar of the NFC West. We discuss the new club that Russell Wilson belongs to and another player who will be joining that club in the near future. Ep 303303: Strengths and shortcomings of the Seahawks roster, matchups to watch versus Atlanta
It was a big weekend for Seahawks news ahead of the Week 1 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. On Saturday, the team released its 53-man roster which highlighted the strengths and shortcomings we've been discussing a lot in the offseason. Now it's official-the defensive line has some big question marks. The next day, we learned that Jadeveon Clowney would not be returning to Seattle. Although reports showed that offers made to Clowney were valued at the range of the contract he ultimately signed, he is going back to the AFC to play in the division of his former team. To kick off the season, the Seahawks will take on the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan was down with an injury last season and even though Seattle had a huge halftime lead, it ended up disappearing toward the fourth quarter. Are we going to see the Seahawks employ a similar strategy this season with their offense to try and go up big early against teams? Perhaps giving up more than 450 yards in the air to Matt Schaub last season was enough to emphasize the importance of improving depth in the secondary in the offseason. We close out the first half of the show talking about areas of the roster that could come back to bite the team by choosing to focus on depth and familiarity with the team rather than going after higher priced talent. In the second half of the show, we get a little pushback from one of our newest members of the flock on the pancakes versus waffles debate. We learn about how creative gender reveals need to consider temperature and climate in their decision making, and for people who pump gas and don't move their car before going into the store. Ep 302302: Seattle Seahawks 2020 Season Expectations
It's time for the annual assessment of our Seattle Seahawks before we head into the regular season. This first game against the Atlanta Falcons is coming up in less than three weeks! We talk about the areas of the team that improved the most in the offseason, the areas that we feel still need improvement, and at least one issue from 2019 that hasn't been talked about enough for how big of a problem it was for the team last season. On offense, will the Seahawks "Let Russ Cook" or will Pete Carroll shift to a more conservative approach and adopt the "Hammer the Rock" philosophy? Without preseason games, we can only go off the clues we've been given by some of the transactions. We can also go off some of the clues through short video releases to see how the offensive line is shaping up, but we also have to consider the competition when hyping up our own players. The offseason hype is in full swing when it comes to players like Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Phillip Dorsett, and Travis "TD" Homer. The blame for the hype goes all the way to the top. By "the top" we mean it goes even beyond Pete Carroll or even the NFL. The 2020 Podcast Pick'em League is now functional. Be sure and register and create a creative team name. Look for a bonus show later this week as we have even more than we talk about beyond this huge 2020 season kickoff episode. Ep 301301: San Francisco 49ers - Know Your Rival 2020
Prior to the deal for Jamal Adams, the Seahawks offseason addition of Quinton Dunbar was the biggest trade of the offseason. The likelihood that Dunbar would play for the team looked low throughout offseason, but now that his legal issues have been resolved Seattle's secondary will get a big boost with both Dunbar and Adams. As we watch for a boost on the defensive line, the only recent addition was to sign Branden Jackson back to the team. But could we see something soon around Jadeveon Clowney, Everson Griffen or Clay Matthews? Our Know Your Rival series continues as we look at the moves the San Francisco 49ers made in the offseason. They've made some complimentary moves to address their biggest losses, but there are question marks that go along with each of those moves. With the 49ers coming off a Super Bowl loss, we discuss some of the same issues that the Rams and Seahawks had to endure after a big loss. After the break, an article confirms our thoughts about how NFC West QBs are ranked outside of Seattle. As we explored potential safe spaces for Seahawks backup QB Geno Smith, we learn of a unique phenomenon in the world that provides the ultimate protection. Closing the show, we talk about the return of Mr. Unlimited and the idea that the Seahawks don't have a top 40 fantasy football player on the team. Ep 300300: Holy Catfish! The Seahawks trade for Jamal Adams
In a trade the Seattle Seahawks could not have timed any better for our podcast, Jamal Adams is now heading to the Pacific Northwest. Why was the timing so important? We can now celebrate a milestone of the show with some good news rather than talking about our rival that is the defending NFC Champion. Instead, we talk about the risks associated with the Adams trade, the various reactions among Seahawks fans and some questions about the team that still remain going into the season. As part of our milestone episode, Steve Raible joins the show and he talks about how announcing Seahawks games could be very different in this 2020 season. He shares some moments from his career with the team and we even talk about the popularization of the "Holy Catfish" call and the play from Marshawn Lynch's career that put the term in the consciousness of Seahawks fans. After the interview, we talk about the NFL Top 100 list, some of the recent roster cuts by Seattle and which 80s to 90s era Seahawks tattoo we would get. We close the show by talking about why China and Mike Florio need to do better. Better at Life honors go to the newest member of the Seahawks as well as a Canadian couple who went off the grid and may need to provide Geno Smith with some advice on living in solitude. We close the show with a thanks to all those supporting the podcast along with a new parody song (lyrics by Flocktimus Prime): Thank you for joining the Flock. We talk Seahawks around the clock. Bonus: Reacting to the Jamal Adams trade w/Rob Staton
bonusThe Seahawks pulled off a trade on Saturday for an immensely talented safety. Jamal Adams was an All-Pro in 2019 and second team All-Pro the year before. Seattle is getting a player who immediately gives them another player on the defensive side of the ball that opposing teams will need to account for. But it also came at a big cost. While Pete Carroll and John Schneider have dealt first round picks in the past, no trade comes close to the amount of risk associated with this deal. But giving up two future first round picks, it means that if an injury occurs that gives the team a top 10 pick - the Jets will now be the beneficiary. Did the Seahawks also make a mistake by not using a similar trade package for help along the defensive line? The next few weeks will tell us if Seattle is actually satisfied with the moves they've made up front or if there is more work to be done ahead of the Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Ep 299299: Arizona Cardinals - Know Your Rival 2020
Please help out the show by nominating the Sea Hawkers Podcast for the 15th Annual People's Choice Podcast Awards. You can visit podcastawards.com to register and make the nomination in the Sports category. There's less than a week left. We missed the cut last year and would really like to make it this year. Before we get to the Arizona Cardinals offseason and their outlook for 2020, we discuss the decision to cancel preseason games. It will be the first time since we've been doing the show that we don't have a preseason crush going into Week 1 of the NFL. Included in the changes is how the team has allowed season ticket holders to opt out for their seats this year. We also discuss the PFF rankings for the Seahawks defensive line and how Michael Bennett's retirement means one less veteran who can come back and help offer some improvement. There's still some time before the season and as we review the Cardinals you'll understand that there isn't much difference between the lowest ranked team and being middle of the pack in the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals are a team, apart from maybe the Tampa Bay Bucs, who are widely seen as winning the offseason. But apart from optimism from last year and a blockbuster trade for one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, the NFC West rival parallels the Cleveland Browns in many respects. The most positive part of the Cardinals is that they have very few players who can be disliked. We need your help in making up some rumors to build up our sports hate for this particular team. In the second half of the show, we talk about the latest news in the Quinton Dunbar case. There is one reason to be optimistic that he could play for the team this season. The renaming of the Washington Football Team, means that a friend of a longtime listener also needs a new nickname. CBS Sports lands in the doghouse for both of the Do Better selections this week. There has been a lot of focus on team nicknames over the past couple weeks, so we close the show by focusing on the best and worst of team names throughout sports. Ep 298298: Los Angeles Rams - Know Your Rival 2020
The month of July is traditionally the month where we look around the division at the other NFC West rivals to get an idea of how the landscape has changed since the previous season. That tradition continues for our show this year, but instead of bringing on other podcasters this season, we're going to be putting in the work and doing the research ourselves. Kicking off the month of July is the Los Angeles Rams. They have a new logo, they have new uniforms and they have a new stadium. Those three things help add up to a 10-6 season according to some of our favorite Rams fans. With a significant loss of talent in the offseason, it's tough to see where the Rams find a way to improve off last season. The offensive line hasn't improve and that will prove to be the single biggest factor in the Rams decline. We take a look at an article of the top six offseason moves for the Rams, and that alone should provide the kind of clues that it's going to be an uphill battle for coach Sean McVay. In the second half of the show we talk about the record breaking Patrick Mahomes contract, Cam Newton signing with the Patriots, and another former Seahawks cornerback going to San Francisco. Truck manufacturers are called out along with NFC West writers who voted for one former Rams player to make the all-decade team for the division. Better at life honors go to a mutual friend and to the crew of Hard Knocks for continuing to move forward in shining a light on what the Rams will be dealing with leading up to the scheduled 2020 NFL season. Ep 297297: Decoding Pete Carroll's Comments on Colin Kaepernick
This is normally the time of the offseason where we would talk about the Seahawks finishing up OTAs, instead we're talking about the end of the team's zoom meetings. With the relatively lack of news, some of the biggest news still remains the comments from Pete Carroll revisiting the team's decision not to sign Colin Kaepernick. We provide some of the context that Carroll may have been unwilling to offer in the press conference with the mindset of trying to protect his team, while at the same time trying not to hurt Kap's chances of getting back into the NFL, and not wanting to talk about the potential for added distractions. Where have the Seahawks spent their money this offseason? In an offseason where there was potential to bring in some big name talent, to this point they've generally spread the money out rather than spending big in one spot. Can we really believe that Carroll is content with the job they've done to this point in the offseason? The potential for a 2020 season may even be in jeopardy, but Adam may have the expertise needed to consult with teams on how to live life outdoors and away from people, all things that may be necessary for football to happen in the fall. Closing out the show, we talk about camper home repair, how wrong Snopes is about Tom Brady, the excitement over rural Internet, and the Bridge to the Future march. Ep 296296: Clowney turns down the Browns, Pete Prisco joins Team 'Let Russ Cook'
NFL teams are returning to their facilities starting on Friday so that is hopefully a positive step toward having an NFL season this year. The Carlos Hyde signing may be sending a less than positive signal about the health of Rashaad Penny though. The guys talk about how a potentially troubling aspect of the signing is how playerprofiler.com has Eddie Lacy as the "best comp" for Hyde. Jadeveon Clowney remains unsigned and the latest rumors say he turned down a deal from the Browns worth $12 million with incentives up to $20 million. Are the Seahawks really going to be content with the players they currently have on the defensive line going into the season? Pete Prisco's Top 100 list hit the street recently, which means it's time for a trip to Prisco's World. How has Prisco gone from having Russell Wilson ranked so low in the past to now being on team "Let Russ Cook"? We also go down the list and talk about the rankings of some of the players from our NFC West rivals. In the second half of the show, we respond to some emails and reviews and Adam talks about an uncomfortable experience in his Do Better. We also discuss how Tiger Woods let down Russell Wilson in the quarterback's charity efforts. Lastly, Pete Carroll closes the show with his message of empathy after watching a week of protests and violence in the streets. Support the show Get in the Flock! Bobby Wagner is hurting like everybody else
bonusBobby Wagner met with reporters on Monday and it turned into a conversation more than a news conference. Many of the news stories that came out yesterday and today are based on this call, and this will give you the full context of what was discussed. I cut out some of the audio problems that came up during the call, silence between questions, some "ums" and the four football questions that took away from the conversation that dominated the call.
Ep 295295: Assigning blame for the Seahawks offseason - It's the Giants' fault
It's the first show of the second half of the Seahawks offseason, just past the Seahawkquinox, and there were a lot of strange things to happen at the apex of the offseason. First, we discuss the rumor that apparently was being thrown around two years ago, but was apparently only worth reporting now that Russell Wilson is being considered as the second-most untradeable player in the offseason. We go back to the initial audio that sparked the flurry of stories as Chris Simms seemed to downplay a rumor he didn't believe was worth following up on at the time. Another story that we don't have a clear picture of is what happened leading up to the arrest warrant being issued for the new Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar. The story from the initial report was that Dunbar was involved in a robbery, but not long after the reports had changed and stories from witnesses had evolved to Dunbar having left the scene before the robbery took place. We also discuss team news like Geno Smith coming back to the Seahawks and a pair of veteran running backs the Seahawks have reportedly discussed contracts with. One listener says he'll be done with the NFL if games are played this fall without fans, and we talk about how the games could be broadcast to make it less weird. In the second half of the show, we discuss the Rams new uniforms as well as a new rule that would take the place of the onside kick. A member of the flock points to how many of the Seahawks moves stem from some of the issues Seattle struggled with in their game against the Packers. We also look back at a listener who took issue with the discussion coming out of the draft show a few weeks back. Finally, we note areas where Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have been disrespected in the Do Better segment this week. Better at life honors go out to a Browns fan on YouTube and to Will Ferrell for one of his comments going after a current member of the Seahawks tight end group. Support the show Get in the Flock! Ep 294Bonus: The INs and OUTs of the 2020 Seahawks Schedule
bonusThe Seattle Seahawks 2020 schedule is out and every year for the last few years now Dave Bloomquist, one of our long-time members of the flock, joins the show to dig deep into the schedule. Dave looks at the rest days for the team and finds where there are some of the toughest stretches of the upcoming season regardless of the strength of opponent. We also take a look back into history to see where the team performs well, and doesn't perform so well, to start the season. Ep 294294: Seattle Seahawks 2020 Draft Recap
The Seattle Seahawks went into the draft with a need to improve the pass rush and came away with two defensive ends. Can Darrell Taylor and Alton Robinson help make up the difference with Jadeveon Clowney looking like he may not return to the team? Jarran Reed taking his old number back is the latest clue that Clowney has plans to go to another team this offseason. Two more players who won't be back are Justin Britt and D.J. Fluker. While Fluker got a lot of love on his way out the door, there didn't seem to be as much there for Britt. After we talk about the player departures, we go pick by pick through the latest additions starting with the team's newest linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Every year the Seahawks release some of the best calls to their draft picks to let them know they're being selected and this year's winning call went to their seventh round pick Stephen Sullivan. Every year of the draft we have to decode what the team was taking into consideration as to why they approached the draft the way that they did. We go through some of the biggest factors, and also look at the players the team has taken to try and decide if it's a clue for the future direction of the team and we get to try and project the type of impact the player will have. Adam says the player he's most intrigued by is WR Freddie Swain and Brandan likes OG Damien Lewis. In the second half of the show we talk about moves from the division rivals as San Francisco was able to trade for Trent Williams to fill in behind Joe Staley. The move made frat boy Sean McVay want to pound beers. Adam talks about how he's tired of news writers not following the rules of journalism. We hear your suggestions of the terrifying movie villains combined into one and better at life honors go out to Justin Britt and the people who made the 2020 NFL Draft come together. The Seahawks close out the 2020 NFL Draft with five picks on Day 3
bonusOur bonus daily coverage of the 2020 NFL Draft wraps up with a look at the Seahawks Day 3 selections. Did the Seahawks fully address their needs or do they have more work to do before the start of the season? What kind of immediate impact could their new group have on the team? Rob Staton of the Seahawks Draft Blog is back on the podcast as we talk about all five of the picks from the third day of the draft. Colby Parkinson was a player who was talked about as a potential first round pick only a year ago and they were able to select him in the fourth round. The Seahawks added running back Deejay Dallas as players of his build were becoming more scarce in the draft. Seattle doubled up on edge rushers by taking Alton Robinson in the fifth round and closed out their day with two wide receivers: Freddie Swain of Florida and Stephen Sullivan of LSU. We close out the show talking about what it could mean for the roster and the flexibility it offers them to make moves if they find themselves in a situation where they can add an impact free agent going into the NFL season. Seattle Seahawks 2020 NFL Draft Day 2 Reaction
bonusThe Seahawks made a big move near the start of Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft to move up and select pass rusher Darrell Taylor of Tennessee. They gave up their 3rd round compensatory pick to make the move, but were able to add a mid-fourth round pick by trading back from the final pick of the second round. In the third round, at pick 69, Seattle went with another SEC player in the trenches. Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog joins the podcast and says he had LSU guard Damien Lewis consistently projected to go in the top 50. Although the Seahawks have been stocking up on guard this offseason, he immediately jumps into the competition for a starting spot. Reacting to the Seahawks selection after the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft
bonusThe Seattle Seahawks stayed put on the first day of the draft and selected Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog comes back on the show to react to the pick. With so many needs on the team, it's difficult for fans to accept that the Seahawks have now used their top draft asset as the biggest needs for the team remain the biggest needs.
Ep 293293: Pre-draft coverage with Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog
We've got Rob Staton back on the podcast for one last show before the draft. Prior to the show, we listened in to the press conference with Pete Carroll and John Schneider and discuss some of our takeaways regarding the ongoing situation with Jadeveon Clowney, the state of the Seahawks pass rush, and how the focus on the offensive line in free agency. Considering the lack of immediate contributors at the defensive end spot, it may be better for the Seahawks to look toward the defensive interior or consider weapons for Russell Wilson either at receiver or at running back. Rob talks about how Jonathan Taylor can't help but talk about the Seahawks even when he's asked about other NFL teams. At the Seahawks Draft Blog, there's a draft board that is loaded with potential Seahawks draft picks that Rob believes should be on Pete and John's radar when it comes to the different rounds. Sure, there may be some surprises, but if you study up on that list, it's likely you'll become familiar with players who Seattle ultimately selects this Thursday through Saturday. If you want to join in booing the NFL Commissioner, @elloMK is pulling together a group of 100 Seahawks fans on Twitter and may still have some spots available. Ep 292292: Greg Olsen learns the culture of the Seahawks TE group, ranking the 2020 quarterback draft class
This show starts off by recapping the Seahawks news from the past two weeks, including the sad news of former Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson passing away this week. In free agency news, Seattle continues to add to the offensive line by bringing back Mike Iupati. What does this mean for the team in terms of how they approach the 2020 draft and which players are going to be competing for which positions? With the draft beginning next week, we discuss the similarities and differences from previous drafts. Even though there are some glaring needs on defense, the team could continue to look for weapons to surround Russell Wilson with early on in the draft. With the offseason being very different this year, it could also change the way teams may want to think about their rookie players going into next season. The Seahawks recently posted a video on the tight ends position room where Greg Olsen was introduced to the current group of Seattle tight ends. To say that he'll bring a higher level of maturity to the group is an understatement and we have the clips as evidence. We also clue Luke Willson into why a grizzly bear would obviously win a fight with a gorilla. Adam has ranked the 2020 class of quarterbacks and has decided that only two rise to the level of providing a team with a quarterback who gives a team a legitimate shot at the playoffs. In the second half of the show we dive into some clips from the Mysterious Universe podcast that explores some of the origins of Pete Carroll's coaching philosophy. If you want to check out their full podcast, you can tune in around the 1:12:25 mark of their show. We also discuss a listener email that talks about just how lucky the team would be to find a pass rusher who can provide an immediate impact late in the first round or into the second round of the draft. Closing out the show, we talk about an Air Force program that combines two of the most terrifying terms to come from sci-fi films into a single program that should sound alarm bells for anyone familiar with the Terminator and Star Trek series. Kam Chancellor is snubbed from a list of All-Decade team snubs. A politician in Washington State has decided to give up politics to serve the public in another way and science and medicine tells us all why it was better for humanity that the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year. Ep 291291: Seahawks draft prospects on the offensive and defensive line
Times are tough for some of the 2020 NFL Draft prospects. Particularly those prospects who would have been able to shine in front of NFL scouts at the various team Pro Days across the country. While there are quite a few players to feel sympathy for, there is a subset of players for which Rob Staton has no sympathy. Rob talks about a few players who had an opportunity to compete at the NFL Combine and chose not to ultimately missed out on what ended up being their last chance to display their athleticism. One Seahawks free agent has been significantly impacted by his inability to meet with teams and get looked over by medical staff is Jadeveon Clowney. Considering the Seahawks biggest need has been to add to the defensive line, they've done little to add high impact talent to a group that finished at the bottom of the NFL in so many categories. Is Clowney, the coronavirus, or the Seahawks to blame for this? Getting back into Seahawks prospects, we take a look at players who can rush the passer as we learn who underwhelmed Rob is when considering several options Seattle has throughout the draft. While the options at pass rush may be limited at the end of the first round, finding a player on the offensive line may be more promising. We discuss Rob's latest mock draft and his thoughts on some of the biggest names. Closing out the show, we explore a position that is relatively low when you consider positions of need for Seattle. But the Seahawks always seem to find a way to surprise us when it comes to the draft. When it comes down to the kind of players Rob wants, there's a certain type of mentality he feels is missing and would like to see Seattle address through the draft. Ep 290290: Evaluating the Frank Clark trade one year later, best Seahawks among NFL jersey numbers
The Seahawks made a couple moves in the last week of free agency and freeing up some salary cap space with the release of Ed Dickson and the announcement that Tedric Thompson would be released soon. With those two moves announced on the same day, Seahawks fans were anticipating bigger news. Instead, we learn that Jadeveon Clowney's public asking price has now dropped below the $20 million mark. At the very least, hopefully it means there is some resolution on the issue soon. With some down time ahead of the NFL Draft later this month, we take a look back at the 2019 free agency period and the situation that led the Seahawks to trade Frank Clark and if that's a move that John Schneider would like to have back or if he would need to do all over again. What ultimately came of the draft picks that were exchanged with the Kansas City Chiefs? Though Ziggy Ansah was the biggest miss of the previous offseason, the risk may still have been worth the reward although we take a look at some of the other moves that ultimately could have been accomplished with the cap space that was dedicated for Ansah. The Athletic kicked off the offseason lists by running through the top players in NFL history to wear each jersey number and several Seahawks veterans made the list and there were many other honorable mentions. The conversation led to a discovery by Adam on how to use former Seahawks nose tackle Joe Nash in Tecmo Bowl to blow up every play up the middle or even plays where the quarterback was under center. In the second half of the show we talk about our latest giveaway. Members of the Flock can go to tinypiecesofseahawksstuff.com and type 'Go Hawks' in the comments for a random drawing of a Russell Wilson card with a tiny piece of Seahawks jersey. We also talk about some NFL news as well as a running back who is Adam's current draft crush. Do better calls go out to Jeep thieves as well as NFL owners. Ep 289289: Time for Clowney to get off the fence, ranking the Seahawks best moves so far
The Seahawks are now into the second week of free agency and Jadeveon Clowney has not yet made a decision to return to the Seahawks or move on to another team. What is making this decision so difficult for Seattle's top pass rusher? In the meantime, the Seahawks made two moves that have some potential upside for the roster by sending a 5th round draft pick to Washington for a cornerback going into the final year of his contract. Quinton Dunbar received the 2nd highest coverage grade from PFF last season, but there is some important context for fans to at least be aware of before crossing off Tre Flowers as a member of the starting lineup in 2020. John Schneider also brought in a veteran wide receiver. Where does that move rank among his 10 best decisions so far this offseason? Especially considering what might be some of the best decisions on which players would stay in Seattle and which were allowed to move on. Despite the moves, there continue to be glaring spots for improvement along the defensive line. Mike Daniels in the interior should be a key target for Seattle while there are some veteran pass rushers who remain available as possible upgrades. In the second half of the show we learn that Germain Ifedi is heading to the Chicago Bears, which ads to a growing list of questionable moves that appear to be a desperate attempt to compete in the NFC North. Todd Gurley was cut by the Los Angeles Rams and since joined the Falcons. We also discuss how Tom Brady will look (and sound) while playing quarterback for Bruce Arians. Ep 288288: What the CATFISH is John Schneider doing? Oh wait, that makes sense
It's incredible how things have changed in just the short time since our last episode. As we all deal with some of the many changes that we're working through, it's fun to take some time and think about things like Seahawks football. So with NFL free agency moving on as scheduled, the Seahawks are focusing primarily on the offensive line while adding a veteran pass rusher as Bruce Irvin returns to the Seahawks. Along the defensive line Jarran Reed returns to Seattle while Quinton Jefferson finds a new home in Buffalo. As Germaine Ifedi looks to make upwards of $10 million per season, John Schneider seems to have found a right tackle from the Jets who compares to Ifedi with one-third of the penalties. Jadeveon Clowney is still looking for a big time contract, too, but is time running out for him to make a deal? Seattle seems to have an inside track the longer we wait. Fan favorite Luke Wilson is also back with the team. Around the NFC West we look at some of the other major deals as DeAndre Hopkins is now going to be paired with Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona. We break down how the Texans made one of the worst moves in history by accepting a trade that included David Johnson, which may be even more help to the Cardinals by allowing them to clear out cap space. The Rams find themselves in a tough spot with Jared Goff now counting more toward the salary cap than any other quarterback in the NFL. Ep 287287: Seahawks needs versus wants ahead of free agency
For the two months since the conclusion of the Seahawks season, every position group has now been dissected to the point that a person could be convinced that every area of the team has room to find improvement. Ahead of free agency next week, Adam and Brandan direct the focus toward what the Seahawks really need to find in free agency and away from the positions that could be considered as luxury moves. But if Seattle is going to have a championship offseason, their financial focus truly needs to be on positions of need. Teams can begin negotiating directly with players early next week, but is it possible that a contract for Clowney could come at the end of this week ahead of free agency? If he does decide to head out we talk about why Yannick Ngakoue isn't the answer and how there are several names in the free agent market who could be signed to help build a solid rotations of veterans along with the young players along the Seahawks line. Compensatory picks have been announced and we talk about which picks the Seahawks have now. Russell Wilson also has a new quarterback coach who we can only expect will become the NFL's next Mike Holmgren. We close out the show by talking about the restrictions impacting Seattle sporting events, an article about the Rams that asks a question that has already been answered and a look at the NFL's latest draft model to incorrectly predict future Seahawks. Ep 286286: Ngakoue trade rumor clouds situation with Clowney, post-combine talk with Rob Staton
This week the rumor is that the Seattle Seahawks may be looking to trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their top defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. This could signal a few different things with regard to Jadeveon Clowney. Perhaps they've decided to move on from Clowney (a bit too early to seem likely), or it could be that they are trying to gauge the market before making their best offer to Clowney. It may be they want him in addition to keeping Clowney or they are simply doing their due diligence in case a deal falls through before free agency opens. Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog joins the show to talk about an unlikely scenario, but one that could be worth considering with the talent that Clemson's Isaiah Simmons could bring to the NFL. Offensive line could be a prime target, but will any of the guys the Seahawks like be left by the end of the first round? Even with the deep receiver draft, Rob considers the idea that the Seahawks could fill their need for a possession receiver by taking a tight end.
