Indeed such stories of wagering one’s soul for these supernatural benefits and gifts are so ingrained in various cultures, especially ones based in Christianity, that “to make a deal with the Devil” has become a common colloquial proverb in many places. Yet as entwined as the idea of these diabolical pacts may be with myth, legend, fiction and folklore, there have been over the centuries those who have been said to have allegedly made very real, literal bargains with the actual Devil himself or at least potent demons. These are strange tales which have caused such pacts to stretch out from fiction into the real world, suggesting that not only are they purportedly possible, but that demonic entities and even Satan himself somehow in fact really exist.

What's sure is that the first historic record of the holiday is a calendar dating from 354 CE, belonging to a rich Roman Christian named Philocalus. That calendar tells us that on the same date - December 25 - another holiday was celebrated, marking the birth of Sol Invictus, “the Unconquered Sun.” That was a new pagan cult, worshiping a new sun deity. Both these holidays coincided with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which had been celebrated from December 17 to December 24th. That was a festival celebrating the god Saturn, which – as we will see - contributed heavily to latter-day Christmas traditions. That’s right folks, Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory is correct, it’s Saturnalia, not the birth of Jesus. So then why December 25th? His name is Krampus, and he’s the terror of Austria and the Alpine region.A mangled, deranged face with bloodshot eyes tops a furry black body. Giant horns curl up from his head, displaying his half-goat, half-demon lineage. Home invasions are a not an all too common occurrence, but for most people they are a major fear, a fear that Bryan Bertino exploited quite well in 2008’s THE STRANGERS, the story of a young couple who become the victims of a random home invasion while vacationing in their remote summer home. But what makes the film more frightening is that there was a rumor that it was based on real events. You may want to check those locks one more time now. Although the film does bare a resemblance to the highly publicized Tate-Labianca murders of 1969, there is a less well-known murder that has also been discussed in regards to the film.In November of 1980, Glenna “Sue” Sharp was renting a cabin in Keddie, California, an isolated wooded region in the northern part of the state. During the 80s, it was a derelict town where people usually ended up when everything else in their life had gone wrong. It also had a big crime problem for such a small town.

Ok, now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s double dark enigma… and the Villisca Axe Murder House mystery!At the end of a quiet street in Villisca, Iowa, there sits an old white frame house. Up the street, there are a group of churches, and a few blocks away is a park that faces a middle school. The old white house looks like many of the others that fill the neighborhood, but unlike them, it lies abandoned. The house emits no light or sound, and upon closer inspection, the doors are found to be tightly boarded up. A small sign out front reads: “Villisca Axe Murder House.”Despite its ominous air, the little white house was once filled with life. Life that was harshly stamped out one warm summer’s night in 1912, when a mysterious stranger broke in, and viciously bludgeoned its eight sleeping inhabitants to death. The event would come to be known as the Villisca axe murders and would baffle law enforcement for over a century.On June 10, 1912, the Moore family was sleeping peacefully in their beds. Joe and Sarah Moore were asleep upstairs, while their four children were resting in a room down the hall. In a guest room on the first floor were two girls, the Stillinger sisters, who had come for a sleepover. Shortly after midnight, a stranger entered through the unlocked door (not an uncommon sight in what was considered a small, safe, friendly town), and plucked an oil lamp from a nearby table, rigging it to burn so low it supplied light for barely one person. On one hand, the stranger held the lamp, lighting the way through the house. In his other, he held an axe.

Nothing says ‘Holiday Greetings’ like terrorists who target this season as the perfect time for lone wolf attacks. Indeed, the new London attack may well be the beginning of this year’s holiday spree. Multiple stabbings at Fishmongers’ Hall began the calls to police and the chase to London Bridge. Passersby became heroes as they swarmed the terrorist, knocked him down and took his kitchen knife. When police arrived, they shot him, but not before he opened his jacket to reveal a suicide vest. The vest turned out to be a hoax, but his intentions were very real. Yet, many media outlets refused to call it a ’terror’ attack, long after the Metro Police had said that it was one! And the few media outlets that showed his body, blurred his face. His name, Usman Khan, wasn’t released for hours, though he turned out to be a convicted terrorist who’d been released from prison.There's apparently more concern for preventing Islamophobia than for reporting the truth! After the London attack, New York police went on higher alert, aware that there are wannabe terrrorists close at hand. In fact, it’s not only ‘a tree that grows in Brooklyn’, but a wannabe terrorist, as well. Zachary Clark had just been arrested for encouraging ISIS attacks in the NYC subway! Hear how he urged lone wolves to overcome their discomfort at plunging a knife into a non-believer's chest and to “make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom!"
