S2 Ep 1691S2 Ep1691: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Congresswoman Sara Jacobs Egg Freezing Choice: Why Authenticity Wins
What if one of the most personal decisions a woman can make (when and whether to become a mother) became a public act of courage that shifted the conversation for an entire generation? In Episode 710 of Passion Struck, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-CA) joins John R. Miles for a deeply human conversation that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with agency, worth, and vulnerability.👉At 31, newly sworn into Congress, Sara froze her eggs to preserve the option of motherhood on her own timeline. At 36, still serving, she returned for two more rounds and chose to speak openly about the physical toll, emotional weight, and empowering choice behind it. Sara shares the raw realities (hot flashes, intense cravings, acne, and the surprising joy of taking control), why she rejects pity for empowerment, and how radical vulnerability has become her superpower in leadership. She challenges the idea that women must be perfect to lead, explains why fertility is not just a “women’s issue,” and calls on male leaders to recognize their experience represents only half the story. 👉If you’ve ever felt pressure to follow a prescribed path or wondered how authenticity can reshape both personal life and public policy, this conversation is for you. S2 Ep 1689S2 Ep1689: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung & Stars of Himself and Nora @freeFALL
The current show at St. Petersburg’s freeFall Theatre is Jonathan Brielle’s Himself and Nora running through March 8. It’s a musical about the iconic Irish novelist James Joyce (1882-1941) and the intimate yet tempestuous relationship he had with his wife, Nora Barnacle. Joining Bill today in the Arts Alive! podcast studio are Robert Teasdale (Joyce) and Katie Davis (Nora), who discuss the play, the dynamic between the long-ago Irish lovers, and the process by which director Eric Davis (no relation) and musical director Michael Raabe pulled the powerful production together. Himself and Nora also stars Michael Gregory, Julia Rifino and Drew H. Wells, each in multiple roles, but at day’s end it’s all about “Jimmy” and Nora. Many subjects are tackled, including the Catholic church and its effects on the free-thinking Joyces, the moral standards of the era (Joyce’s controversial epic Ulysess can’t find an American publisher), alcoholism and adultery.

S2 Ep 1687S2 Ep1687: GOOD DEEDS Preview Class Acts & Mahaffey Concerts w/ Bill Edwards & Katrina Young.
Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts Supports Student Wellness with Mahaffey Class Acts ProgramIn this episode of Good Deeds, host Nanette Wiser catches up with CEO & Philanthropist Bill Edwards (Duke Energy Center for the Arts- Mahaffey Theater, Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts) and Katrina Young (VP of Arts Education & Entertainment, Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts) about a very special Class Acts Live Performance program Feb. 9 "How to Survive Middle School" for grades 5-8 that deals with the issues of bullying, social media and its impact on mental health.👉Comedian Robert Post barely survived Middle School. Struggling because of various learning disabilities, he found that making people laugh saved him. In this brand new multimedia performance, kids talk to kids in a compelling, funny, and educational show. Dealing with real issues affecting students today, including social media, testing, bullying, and peer pressure, these video testimonials by kids and their advocates (along with a generous dose of Post’s signature humor) are sure to resonate with school and public audiences alike. One of Robert Post’s childhood report cards in Columbus, Ohio, gave a hint as to how his future might unfold. Not amused by Robert’s antics, his teacher created a whole new column of categories describing maladaptive behavior. Happily for audiences around the world, Post stuck with antics. The result: a dazzling performance career that continues to defy categories.👉Class Acts youth educational programs continue with Cirque du Bam, A Carnival of Creativity; The Lightning Thief TYA Edition; Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus; The Boy Who Grew Flowers; and Honk!Jr., followed by theatrical summer camps and The Descendants play, following the success of The Little Mermaid (2024) and Legally Blonde Jr. The Musicial. Learn more at [email protected].👉Bill filled us in on the big news that his first draft of book is finished and with his publisher as well as his plan to let someone else take of management of The Mahaffey in Fall 2026 when his contract is up with the city. We will forever be grateful for his contributions to our community and his work creating a world-class performance venue. After walking 1,600 miles down the Pacific Coast with just 44 possessions, Robin arrived in Los Angeles, sat naked in Griffith Park, and relinquished everything — no ID, bank account, phone, or clothing — to live in nature, subsisting on strangers’ kindness."MORE#environment #robingreenfield #eckerdcollege #1millionfruittrees #sustainableliving #foraging #zeroconsumption #zerowaste #nanettewiser #livelifebetter #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1668S2 Ep1668: ARTS ALIVE! Bill DeYoung w/John Gascot & Laura Spencer UNITED Mural Fest @Studios at 5663
In this episode of ARTS ALIVE! podcast, St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung talks about public art. Disheartened by the State’s removal of St. Petersburg’s Black History Matters street mural, artist John Gascot decided to commission a new mural of DEI declaration, outdoors on his own building. Gascot is a co-owner of Studios at 5663, a Pinellas Park artists’ collective. Beginning Saturday, six artists, Gascot included, will paint the word UNITED on the building’s western wall. This space measures approximately 1,200 square feet. The public is invited to UNITED Mural Fest, a free 11 a.m.-4 p.m. event that will include tours of the artist lairs inside the building at 5663 Park Boulevard, along with opportunities to paint several community canvases. Members of the public can paint the new mural’s background, as well, while the six artists each work, in their own diverse styles, on their own letter. Gascot has the letter U. Artist Laura Spencer, aka Miss Crit, has been assigned the letter E. Spencer joins Gascot on today’s podcast, discussing the event, the artists involved, and her membership in the Leadership St. Pete Class of 2026.#billdeyoung #artsalive #stpetecatalyst #unitedmuralfest #studiosat5663 #johngascot #lauraspencer #misscrit #pinellaspark #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1667S2 Ep1667: ECKERD COLLEGE NEWS February Events: Environmental Film Fest, Cinema & Theater
In this episode of Eckerd College news & updates, Nanette Wiser shares some of incredible public events on campus including an Environmental Film Festival, lectures, International Cinema Series and London's National Theater Live at Eckerd College! Here are three of the many events in February. 👉Eckerd College will host a special event with Robin Greenfield (environmental activist and author) as he continues his mission to forage 100% of his food this year to highlight underutilized wild resources. Greenfield will offer his insights at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday Feb. 11, 2026 in a public lecture at Eckerd College’s Fox Hall, 4200 54th Avenue S. St. Petersburg, FL 33711. Greenfield believes the Earth can provide us with everything we need. For one year he is foraging every bite of his food and medicine. “Nature” is his garden, his pantry and his pharmacy. To bring this message to the people, he is traveling to communities throughout the United States. He will embody a relationship of reciprocity with Earth during his community visits, bringing a spotlight to the food and medicine that is growing freely and abundantly all around us. As well as enthusiastically inviting communities to join him in a grassroots effort to plant 1 Million Community Fruit Trees over the next decade. Upcoming events. More on Robin."A Thoreau-esque character for our digital age, he pushes the boundaries of essentialism to their outer limits in what amounts to performance art with purpose: shedding modern artifice to connect more deeply with himself and the planet. After walking 1,600 miles down the Pacific Coast with just 44 possessions, Robin arrived in Los Angeles, sat naked in Griffith Park, and relinquished everything — no ID, bank account, phone, or clothing — to live in nature, subsisting on strangers’ kindness."MORE👉The Eckerd College Community Farm will join Greenfield’s initiative by planting new trees on Feb. 11 and donating banana trees to neighboring community gardens. The EC Community Farm is a 1-acre sustainable farm and food forest situated between the soccer and baseball fields in the heart of Eckerd’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. It provides produce to the campus, while creating opportunities for hands-on education, service, and recreation.👉The Last Slave Ship: The Clotilda, Her Descendants and an Extraordinary Reckoning Tuesday, February 17, 2026, 7 p.m.Location: Fox Hall, Eckerd College campusIn this public lecture, author and filmmaker Ben Raines will share his startling discovery of a piece of hidden American history. Fifty years after the Atlantic slave trade had been outlawed, the Clotilda became the last ship in history to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. The ship was scuttled and burned on arrival, so the wealthy perpetrators could hide from prosecution. Despite people’s numerous efforts to find the sunken wreck, Clotilda remained hidden for the next 160 years. But in 2019, Raines made international news when he successfully concluded his obsessive quest through the Alabama swamps to uncover one of our nation’s most important historical artifacts.Sponsored by the Eckerd College Gulf Scholars Program👉Cultivating Climate Citizens: An Interdisciplinary ApproachThursday, February 26, 2026, 5:30 p.m.Location: Environmental Studies 100, Eckerd College campusThis lecture from a Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar will describe the ways in which institutions of higher education can ensure that students are equipped with the tools and sense of purpose to become resilient and adaptable citizens, as well as climate leaders in their communities. Dr. Laura A. Ogden is an environmental anthropologist at Dartmouth College and serves as the Special Advisor to the Provost on Climate and Sustainability. Professor Ogden has conducted long-term fieldwork in the Florida Everglades and in the Fuegian Archipelago of South America. Her books include Swamplife: People, Gators, and Mangroves Entangled in the Everglades and Loss and Wonder at the World’s End. S2 Ep 1663S2 Ep1663: Car-Free Conversations with Domenico and Saumitra and guest John Barkett
In this episode of Car Free Conversations, hosts Domenico and Saumitra sit down with John Barkett, founder of Barkett Realty, to talk about transformative, people-centered projects reshaping St. Petersburg—without the use of cars.🌿 Trails Crossing Project John shares the vision behind Trails Crossing, a 12.5-acre cultural park planned beneath I-275 that will reconnect neighborhoods long divided by highways. The project aims to safely activate the Pinellas Trail, link districts like Kenwood, Grand Central, Uptown, the Edge District, the Warehouse Arts District, and South St. Pete, and turn fenced, underused land into vibrant public space. Expect shaded walkways, public art, sculpture gardens, amphitheater space, safer crossings, and community gathering areas—all designed with public input.📍 Get Involved The public is invited to review early concepts and share feedback: 🗓 January 29 | ⏰ 6:00–7:30 PM 📍 Barack Obama Library 🌐 https://trailsx.org🏘️ The Looking Glass Initiative (South St. Pete) John also dives into the Looking Glass Initiative, a long-term effort to revitalize the MLK South corridor without displacement. The project includes: Renovation of historic retail spaces A community center (former American Legion building) An urban teaching garden A food pharmacy and healthcare partnerships focused on “food as medicine” Safer streets, including push-button crosswalks and advocacy for two-way traffic on MLK The initiative emphasizes mutual aid over charity, community-led planning, and scalable solutions to address food insecurity, health disparities, and mobility gaps—especially for residents without cars.🚦 Why Two-Way Streets Matter John explains how converting MLK from one-way to two-way traffic can slow cars, improve safety, support local businesses, and reconnect neighborhoods that have been treated as pass-throughs rather than places. This episode highlights what thoughtful, community-rooted development can look like—prioritizing safety, access, culture, and dignity over speed and short-term profit.📻 Listen & Stay Connected 🎧 More episodes: found in the Radio St Pete podcast archive 🤝 Connect Pinellas: https://connectpinellas.org#CarFreeConversations #RadioStPete #StPeteFL #CarFreeStPete #TrailsCrossing #PinellasTrail #UrbanMobility #PublicSpaces #Placemaking #WalkBikeStPete #SouthStPete #MLKSouth #LookingGlassInitiative #FoodIsMedicine #CommunityLed #EquitableDevelopment #TransitOrientedDevelopment #NoCarNoProblem

S2 Ep 1661S2 Ep1661: WHAT'S BREWING TAMPA BAY Alumni Matt Dahm & USF St. Pete Brewing Arts Collab
What's Brewing Tampa Bay host Matt Dahm, Mastry's Brewing Co. and USF alumni, joined Nanette Wiser to talk about his collab with USF St. Pete Brewing Arts where he also teaches when he's not brewing craft beer. The result: The St. Pete Pilsner - a crisp and smooth pilsner, brewed by USF alumni, features a student-designed label (Ashley Wiser) that highlights aspects of USF, St. Petersburg and the art of beer brewing. It is now available at Mastry’s St. Pete Beach location and will soon be available at retailers near USF’s campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee. In April, USF St. Petersburg will host its annual fundraiser, Bulls & Brews by the Bay, where the idea first germinated. 👉“Over the years, our Brewing Arts program has developed some great relationships with local breweries, with many of these owners and head brewers teaching in our program and being our champions in the community,” said Joe Askren, director of USF’s Brewing Arts program. “One of those supporters came to us with the idea of partnering to make a beer, label it and sell it to further support what we are doing here.” 👉Says Matt of the project, four years in the making: "Proud moment for Mastry’s Brewing and an exciting example of what strong community partnerships can create. Through our collaboration with the USF Brewing Arts, we’ve launched the first USF-branded beer, St. Pete Pilsner, paying tribute to the Brewing Arts founding at the St. Pete Campus. This project brought together USF students, alumni, faculty, and our brewing team—from recipe development to a student-designed can label—creating a product that supports education while celebrating local craft. A portion of proceeds from every St. Pete Pilsner sold goes directly back to the USF Brewing Arts Program, helping invest in the next generation of brewing professionals. Grateful to the USF team, faculty, and students who made this possible. Partnerships like this are how we strengthen both industry and community. Stay tuned as we have more bold Bulls brews on the way!" 👉Learn more about Mastry's Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida. S2 Ep 1659S2 Ep1659: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE Rui Farias Previews SPMOH Tourism Exhibit Opening 1/29
In this episode of HISTORICALLY ST. PETE, Rui Farias, executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History previews a new exhibit opening January 29th: WISH YOU WERE HERE: The Art of Selling Sunshine. 🦩Says Farias: "Let's talk about what really made St. Pete famous, tourism. For more than a century, tourism has shaped our identity. From the earliest health seekers who came for sunshine and salt air, to families who filled roadside motels, to retirees who played shuffleboard by the hundreds; visitors have left their mark on every corner of this city. Tourism brought investment, growth, and sometimes tension, influencing politics, architecture, and the natural environment. In the new exhibit - showcased in our 4, 000 square foot gallery - we tell the story of marketing St. Pete to visitors and the visitor experience."🦩The exhibit draws on postcards, photographs, and artefacts to show how Saint Pete sold itself to the world and how travellers responded. From Tent City to Web City, from alligator wrestling to orange crate art, the stories here remind us of how important visitors have always been to the life of the Sunshine City. And when you visit the gallery, imagine arriving here for the first time, stepping into the Florida sun, and writing home with familiar words, "wish you were here."🦩ABOUT Historically St Pete: Aired Monday on RadioStPete.com, this is a weekly conversation where we explore the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Rui Farias is the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Located on the St. Pete Pier, the Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 103 years, and now he shares them you.Says Rui: "Back when I used to teach history at St. Pete High, I would try and instill the importance of knowing your community’s history. Whether it’s the founding fathers & mothers, or the birth and grow of your city, and yes, even the bad or uncomfortable history. I truly believe that once you understand the history of St. Pete, how we started, what we’ve gone through, how we’re still trying to grow and improve, you can’t help but fall in love with this city.
