Mike Hazlett is today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast. As the owner and operator of St. Petersburg’s independent movie theater, Green Light Cinema, he’s been able to monitor changes in the film exhibition business (hint: streaming has taken a major bite out of movie theater operations), along with changes in the city’s movie-watching routines and habits. 🎤Yes, many people still enjoy sitting in a dark room in front of a big screen, especially when it’s a small, critically-acclaimed film that the big multiplex chains don’t care about. Those things are on Mike Hazlett’s mind. As well as the unexpected success of his latest venture, which debuted last December. Green Light Kitchen and Lounge, a 3,500-square-foot space adjacent to the theater, has become a runaway hit. Hazlett, it seems, has found an entertainment sweet spot, by providing food, drinks and live music (along with the occasional comedy or theater performance) before or after a film screening.🎤He also discusses the benefits of partnering with other arts organizations to create events to attract a wide range of visitors, and the importance of paying attention to what people are saying, and asking for. AND how he could not have predicted any of this when he and his wife, fresh out of Boston, decided to open a movie house in downtown St. Petersburg in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Michael Healey’s tender drama The Drawer Boy is onstage through Sunday at The Off-Central, St. Petersburg’s intimate “black box” theater – with just 43 seats, it allows the audience to get right into the thick of things. Joining host Bill DeYoung on Arts Alive! today is the entire cast of The Drawer Boy, Stephen Riordan, Michael Menszycki and Lucas Ethington. Riordan and Menszycki play lifelong friends who have operated a farm together for years. Ethington’s character is a young playwright and actor who arrives to “study” them for a theatrical project about life on a farm.There are lots of laughs in The Drawer Boy, and plenty of pathos, along with more than a little heartbreak (no spoilers here). In a world that so strongly wants to deny you a place, they take you back to a time you didn’t even realize was so precious. Anything too big to fit in a suitcase is left behind forever. Items like photos are some of the last reminders of a home now long gone. This exhibition is an exploration of the tenderness and fragility of the past, conducted through the use of soft and hard materials. The objects chosen are small, mundane, and often ephemeral to show how everyone finds their own way to carry home with them. In this place worry is edged out by the fantastic and mystical. The apocalyptic is supplanted by the surreal and the allegorical. Outside influences still seep in, broken ceramic windows let in a flurry of leaves, cigarettes, old tin cans, a dead bluejay. My work often flirts with how the world might end, while simultaneously finding ways to adapt, recreate, and live on. The Morean is proud to present the work of three seniors in the Pinellas County Center for the Arts program at Gibbs High School 4/11-5/29. After three years of an intense visual art curriculum, students in their fourth year at PCCA begin preparation for their senior project. The senior project is required of all PCCA students wishing to graduate with a certificate from the program. Seniors in the visual art department must develop a cohesive body of work that describes an in-depth exploration of a particular artistic concern or visual idea.
