S2 Ep 1591S2 Ep1591: MOREAN ARTS CENTER June Bunch Previews Upcoming Exhibits/Events

Artist and musician June Bunch previews this winter's upcoming exhibitions and events at Morean Arts Center. Winter Classes February Art Camp Glass Blowing ExperienceJANUARY Morean Center for Clay: The Morean Center for Clay gets fired up with fresh 10/10: Wood Fire Again kiln creations and Berit Hines’ Wondrous Vessels on January 10, from 5-9pm. The fruits of the annual wood firing symposium will be on display in the exhibition 10/10: Wood Fire Again, showcasing a group of potters from all over Florida and beyond. This year’s works come from multiple artists who sacrificed their sanity for over a week during round-the-clock shifts of feeding the anagama kiln’s flame. Through the collective struggle and triumph, marvelous ceramic artworks have been produced for your viewing pleasure. Four kilns, forty artists, and countless logs later have made for one spectacular showcase. Witness not only the variety of artistic styles, but methods of firing. Indulge your senses in the decadent ashy drips of the Anagama; the fiery coal crust of the Train; the slick sheen of the Oil/Salt; and the juicy rind of the Groundhog.Berit Hines shares her Wondrous Vessels in the gallery that come from coil and slab building, which creates one-of-a-kind ceramic vessels depicting a break from symmetrical objects. Hines manipulates the clay body to emphasize the plasticity and gestural qualities of the material while achieving asymmetry.Though sculptural, many of the objects still retain their functionality. The exhibitions are free and open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday,10am-5pm. 10/10 Wood Fire Again will be on view through March 7 and Wondrous Vessels will be on view through February 7.Morean Arts Center 1/16: The Morean Arts Center highlights the National Association of Women Artists, SARTQ Artist Collective, and Rebecca Sexton Larson.A Journey Through My Imagination is a juried exhibition of artwork by members of The National Association of Women Artists (NAWAFL). Featuring painting, photography, ceramics, glass, and more, this show demonstrates the depth and breadth of work being made by participants in one of the oldest art organizations in the US. NAWAFL, founded in 1889, is the oldest professional women’s fine arts organization in the United States, serving professional women artists of all backgrounds and traditions. It encourages contemporary and emerging artists while continuing to honor the long and important contribution of women to the history of American culture and art.The Morean and SARTQ Artist Collective collaborate to present Day Dreams, a captivating group exhibition delving into the enigmatic and surreal world of dreams. This exhibition transports viewers to the subconscious, inviting them to explore the complexities, contradictions, and hidden meanings that reside within our dreams. Through a diverse range of artistic mediums—from painting and sculpture to mixed media, photography, and installation—Day Dreams aims to evoke an immersive and thought-provoking experience where reality and imagination intertwine. Where Leaves Remember by Rebecca Sexton Larson displays an ongoing body of work presented as a sketchbook exploring the relationship between nature, memory, and transformation. Each page functions as both surface and site—a place where recollection accumulates, shifts, and reconfigures over time. Rooted in the premise that leaves, like people, retain evidence of what has passed, the project explores how memory operates as a layered and evolving process. Through drawings, photographs, and text fragments, the work considers how marks and materials record the interplay between permanence and loss. Where Leaves Remember examines how natural cycles of decay and renewal parallel the ways in which human memory is continually rehabilitating through time and experience."Coming off the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we're excited to host these exhibitions that encourage calmness, contemplation and meditation,” said Amanda Cooper, Chief Curator at the Morean Arts Center. “Sexton-Larson's work asks that we slow down and think about the connection between memory and nature, between loss and the passage of time. Day Dreams and A Journey through My Imagination are a soothing feast for the eyes with playful imagery and cotton candy color palettes.”All three exhibitions will be on display from January 16 through March 26. The Morean Arts Center gallery is free and open to the public Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm at 719 Central Avenue. For more information, please visit MoreanArtsCenter.org or call 727.822.7872. 2/14 Artist Jennifer Schumacher Waller uses clay to record moments in-between fixed states. S2 Ep 1589S2 Ep1589: ARTS ALIVE Bill DeYoung - Anthony Gervais & Troy Padraic Brooks on Off-Central's Gruesome Playground Injuries

In the Arts Alive! studio today with St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung are Anthony Gervais and Troy Padraic Brooks, names and faces that will be familiar to fans of live professional theater on both sides of the bay. Only Brooks has been on the podcast before, talking about a production in which he was co-starring in early 2025. Gervais, who’s also an actor, is directing Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries this weekend and next at the Off-Central in St. Petersburg. The show, which stars Brooks and Sarah Beth Saho, chronicles a friendship over the course of 30 years; we meet Doug and Kayleen as children, adolescents and adults. The story is told in anon-linear fashion, jumping from one time period to another as the playwright sees fit.The through line for these two somewhat tortured souls is, and has always been, injury and pain. It is the language only they speak and understand. To call Gruesome Playground Injuries dark would be underselling it. It’s not a fun musical or a canny whodunit. More of the feel-bad show of the season. For all that, it is compelling psychological theater, performed thespians who remain fully committed from the first boo-boo to the last.#billdeyoung #artsalive #stpetecatalyst #anthonygervais #troypadraicbrooks #offcentral

S2 Ep 1579S2 Ep1579: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles - Rick Hanson & Joshua Green: How To Rewire Your Brain

Whey Your Brain Is Wired for Us vs Them Psychology: How to Rewire It for Belonging(Airs 1/12) In this episode of Passion Struck, host John R. Miles joins psychologist Rick Hanson and Harvard’s Joshua Greene to unpack us vs them psychology, why our brains are hardwired for tribal division in a connected world, and how neuroscience offers a path to broader belonging and compassion. At a time of rising polarization, this conversation reveals the evolutionary roots of outrage and exclusion and practical ways to expand your moral circle without erasing differences. Framed around the Pods Fight Poverty initiative, it turns insight into real impact for families in extreme poverty. Together, they explore how moral psychology and neuroscience explain why tribal thinking feels so automatic, why belonging and mattering are biological needs, and how we can expand the moral circle without denying fundamental differences. Why the Human Brain Is Wired for Us vs Them PsychologyJoshua Greene explains that us vs them psychology evolved for tribal survival: internal cooperation, external vigilance. Today, it amplifies polarization as disagreement feels like an existential threat. Human moral systems developed to help small groups cooperate internally while competing externally, allowing early societies to survive in harsh environments. Morality, in this sense, evolved as a coordination tool. It helped people trust those inside the group and remain vigilant toward those outside it. The challenge today is that these ancient instincts are now operating in a hyperconnected world. The brain still reacts as if disagreement signals danger, even when the threat is ideological rather than physical. What once protected us now fuels polarization, outrage, and moral certainty. Recognizing this wiring does not excuse harmful behavior, but it gives us the awareness needed to interrupt it.Explore More: The Ignited Life Newsletter If today’s episode sparked something in you, you’ll love The Ignited Life—our free Substack newsletter created to fuel your growth between episodes. S2 Ep 1578S2 Ep1578: Big Broadway Energy: Stephen Riordan welcomes Avery Anderson and Samantha Martí-Parisi

Big Broadway Energy kicks off the new year as host Stephen Riordan welcomes guests Avery Anderson and Samantha Martí-Parisi for a conversation about storytelling, identity, and the power of intimate theatre.Recorded in December and airing in January, this episode reflects on the Tampa Bay arts scene while looking boldly ahead to 2026 with fresh perspectives. Those perspectives are embodied by Anderson—arts strategist, journalist, and co-founder of the nonprofit Story Keepers—and Martí-Parisi, the performer starring in Story Keepers’ Florida premiere of Pink Unicorn.Story Keepers is not a traditional theatre company, but a storytelling initiative dedicated to developing new artists and new work across forms—from theatre to digital media to music. Founded by Avery Anderson alongside David Digo, José Avilés, and Julia Rafino, the organization centers community, equity, and artistic incubation, ensuring that new voices are supported from first draft to first audience. That mission comes vividly to life in Pink Unicorn, a powerful solo play by Elise Forier Edie. The story follows Tricia Lee, a Christian mother in a small Texas town whose world shifts when her child comes out as gender-queer. Rather than offering easy answers, the play lives in the messy, human in-between: a parent learning, stumbling, loving, and trying to find the right words. As described on the Story Keepers website, Pink Unicorn asks a resonant question: What happens when your child looks you in the eye and tells you they’re not the person the world expects them to be?Directed by Anderson and performed by Martí-Parisi, this production breaks theatrical convention by unfolding not just in galleries, but in people’s homes—living rooms and backyards across Tampa Bay. With audiences of just 10–15 people, the experience becomes a “coffee-table conversation,” dissolving the fourth wall and replacing it with eye contact, vulnerability, and shared breath. It’s theatre rooted in safety, trust, and connection—especially vital in a state and moment where queer stories and bodies are often marginalized.Throughout the episode, Riordan, Anderson, and Martí-Parisi explore why this kind of storytelling matters now: how art builds community, how intimacy deepens empathy, and how showing up—imperfectly but with love—can change lives. They also reflect on Tampa Bay as both a haven and a challenge, and on the responsibility artists carry to create spaces where people feel seen, welcomed, and not alone.Pink Unicorn runs throughout January at six locations, including private homes, The Studio@620, and The Werk Gallery, opening January 15. S2 Ep 1571S2 Ep1571: PET TIPS Rescue Pets Rejoice! The Humane Society of Tampa Bay + Humane Society of Pinellas Merger

Eckerd College correspondent Maddie Merrick reports on the Jan. 2 merger of two great pet rescue non-profit organizations - The Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Humane Society of Pinellas County that was announced Dec. 17, 2025. 👉The two longstanding organizations are merging, formally uniting their missions, teams, and resources to create a more compassionate and sustainable future for animals and families throughout Tampa Bay; becoming The Humane Society of Tampa Bay: Hillsborough Campus and Pinellas Campus effective January 2nd, 2026. The merger comes after years of collaboration, shared values, and a joint commitment to building a more humane community. By bringing their strengths together, the organizations will significantly expand lifesaving services, veterinary support, community outreach, and humane education across the region. “This merger allows us to save more lives and serve more families than ever before,” said Sherry Silk, CEO. “Together, we can respond faster to animals in crisis, provide greater access to affordable pet care, and deliver a deeper impact in the communities we serve.” Key Benefits of the Merger Saving More Lives By combining medical teams, shelter operations, and resources, the unified organization will expand access to veterinary care, improve crisis response, and increase the number of animals who find homes. A more coordinated system means more lives saved and a stronger approach to ending animal homelessness. Helping More Families Stay Together Through expanded affordable veterinary services and pet food support, the organization will help families keep their pets—reducing unnecessary surrenders and strengthening the human–animal bond across Tampa Bay. Strengthening Community Programs A unified volunteer and staff network will increase the reach of high-impact community programs, including TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) for feral cats, and humane education efforts for children in schools and neighborhoods. These programs are essential to reducing community cat populations and inspiring the next generation of compassionate citizens. Building a Sustainable Future The merger will reduce duplication, streamline operations, and allow donor dollars to go farther. Shared costs mean more funding directly supports lifesaving programs and animal welfare initiatives. For more information about the merger and how to get involved, visit HumaneSocietyTampa.org/better-together. #pettips #maddiemerrick #rescuepets #nonprofits #humanesocietyoftampabay#stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete #tampabay

S2 Ep 1567S2 Ep1567: ARTS ALIVE St. Pete Catalyst's Bill De Young with Project Alchemy

For the first Arts Alive! podcast of 2026, four guests join St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung. That’s a record – and since they couldn’t all be in the studio at the same time (not enough microphones!), we conducted the interview via Zoom. They are dancers and choreographers with projectALCHEMY, the St. Petersburg-based nonprofit dance incubator and studio. Samantha Kedziora, Talia Demps, Esophia Higgins-Wilkins and Kirsten Standridge will be part of MIXED: Across St. Pete, a series of pop-up dance performances in public areas around the city Jan. 4-9.The seven neighborhoods on the visit list are Roser Park, Historic Kenwood, Maximo Park, Downtown, Edgemoor, Historic Old Northeast and The Deuces Corridor. Taking dance off the stage and out of the theater is one particular passion of company founder Alexander Jones – he calls it “the power of movement to illuminate the spaces we call home.” To keep the experience organic, company members won’t reveal any specific dates or times. If you're there, you're there. Each of the women discuss their feelings about dance “in the wild,” about the Mixed work they’ve developed (for themselves and other company dancers), and about Jones himself, as teacher, mentor – and friend.MIXed: Across St. Pete The project concludes with a ticketed closing event at The Studio@620, where the company will create a brand-new, in-the-moment improvisational work that reflects on the dance experiences that unfolded across the city throughout the week. This performance is not a repeat of the neighborhood pieces—it is a reimagining and expansion of the stories, landscapes, and movement research discovered in those spaces, interwoven with short dance films and live music by Darren McFarland. MIXed: Across St. Pete honors the beauty of St. Petersburg’s neighborhoods, the importance of accessible dance experiences, and the power of movement to illuminate the spaces we call home.January 4–9: Citywide January 10: Closing Event at The Studio@620 Tickets-$20 General / $15 StudentsLEARN MORE about Bill DeYoung and tune in every Friday on RadioStPete for Arts Alive during Lunchtime Conversations. S2 Ep 1558S2 Ep1558: PET TIPS Keep Your Fur-Baby Safe & Secure on New Year's Eve

In this episode of Pet Tips, host Nanette Wiser shares some tips for keeping your fur-babies safe and secure. To keep pets safe on New Year's Eve, create a calm, indoor sanctuary away from fireworks and guests, ensure they have up-to-date ID/microchips, keep them leashed if outside, and remove dangerous human foods, alcohol, and decorations like confetti, as loud noises and chaos can cause panic and escape attempts. Safe Haven: Set up a quiet, interior room with their bed, toys, and blankets to block sounds and lights. Mask Noises: Use white noise, a TV, or soft music to muffle fireworks and party sounds. Exercise Early: A long walk or play session before the festivities tire them out, helping them rest later. Maintain Routine: Stick to regular feeding and walking times as much as possible. Toxic Foods Keep alcohol (even spills), chocolate, grapes, onions, and rich foods far out of reach. Decorations: Put away confetti, tinsel, balloons, and decorative lights that can be ingested or chewed. Fireworks: Don't let pets near fireworks, sparklers, or party poppers; the debris is also dangerous if swallowed. #pettips #newyearseve #petsafety #pethealth #nanettewiser #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1554S2 Ep1554: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE Rui Farias Bayfront Center Retrospective

In this episode of HISTORICALLY ST PETE, St. Petersburg Museum of History Executive Director Rui Farias talks about the history of Bayfront Center, a site now home to The Mahaffey's world class venue. Set along the downtown waterfront at 400 First Street South, the Bayfront Center complex emerged as one of St. Petersburg’s most ambitious midcentury civic projects. The waterside venue, consisting of a multiuse indoor arena and an adjoining theater later renamed the Mahaffey, officially opened with great fanfare on May 6, 1965. Designed to accommodate events of all kinds, the arena could hold up to 8,600 people depending on its configuration and was intended to serve as a cultural, civic, and entertainment hub for the growing city.Over its four decade run, Bayfront Center welcomed some of the biggest names in music and entertainment. Performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, and the Grateful Dead all took the stage, cementing the venue’s place in the city’s cultural life. Beyond concerts, the arena hosted political rallies, business conventions, high school graduations, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and professional wrestling events including World Championship Wrestling’s 1995 Slamboree.Sports also played a major role. Local basketball and hockey teams competed there, along with the Tampa Bay Rowdies from 1975 to 1987 and the Tampa Bay Terror indoor soccer team in the mid 1990s.A major renovation culminated in a grand reopening on September 4, 1988, drawing an estimated 50,000 visitors. Despite its popularity, rising costs and newer facilities led to the arena’s demolition in 2004. The Bayfront Center’s legacy, however, lives on in decades of shared memories along the city’s waterfront.Explore more at the Museum 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday or from Noon to 5pm on $6 Sundays! #HistoryStPete
