S2 Ep 1743S2 Ep1743: LIVE LIFE BETTER F3 The Burg: Fitness Fellowship & Faith Combats Male Isolation & Builds Friendship
In this episode of Live Life Better, host Nanette Wiser talks with psychotherapist Jason A. Tomkins, LCSW & Navy veteran David Bertoncini about F3 The Burg on how the peer-led mens' leadership group helps men combat isolation and build new friendships through fitness training, fellowship and faith. What is F3? F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. It’s a free, peer-led men’s leadership movement that started in 2011 and now operates worldwide. In St. Petersburg, we’re known as F3 The Burg. What do they do? Free, outdoor workouts (45–60 minutes), rain or shine Open to all men, regardless of fitness level Rotating volunteer leadership Post-workout coffee (“coffeeteria”) for connection and accountability Community service and leadership development Core principles: Always free, open to all men, peer-led outdoor fitness building discipline and resilience that ends with a brief circle of reflection and post work-out coffee. Faith means believing in something bigger than yourself and serving others (not tied to any denomination)Why it matters locally: St. Petersburg continues to grow, and many men lack consistent community. F3 provides connection, purpose, leadership development, and positive mental and physical health benefits — especially for men navigating career and family pressures.Nation's website: https://f3nation.com/Local website: www.f3theburg.com Youtube that explains us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ1uxuR65So#livelifebetter #F3StPete #faith #fitness #fellowship #menshealth #menswellness #mentalhealth #poweroffriendship #nanetteWiser #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1740S2 Ep1740: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Alex Imas, The Winner’s Curse: How Behavioral Economics Explains Why We Make Bad Decisions
The Winner’s Curse: How Behavioral Economics Explains Why We Make Bad Decisions The winner’s curse describes a paradox that shows up everywhere in modern life. The moment we win an auction, land the deal, or beat the competition is often the moment we unknowingly overpaid, overcommitted, or misunderstood the true value of what we gained. 👉In this episode of Passion Struck, Alex Imas joins John R. Miles to unpack why winning so often leads to regret, how behavioral economics explains this pattern, and what it reveals about the way humans make decisions under uncertainty. Drawing on decades of research and real-world examples, this conversation explores how our mental shortcuts, overconfidence, and distorted perceptions quietly shape outcomes in markets, careers, and everyday choices.👉The Curse Explained This phenomenon occurs when the person who “wins” is actually the one who made the most optimistic error. Because everyone is working with imperfect information, the highest bid or strongest conviction often reflects the biggest overestimation rather than superior insight. Originally observed in competitive auctions and natural resource markets, the winner’s curse now appears across investing, hiring, negotiations, and even personal life decisions. Winning feels good in the moment, but it can signal that we misunderstood the situation more than anyone else. This episode explains why success itself can be a warning sign.Explore More: The Ignited Life Newsletter If today’s episode sparked something in you, you’ll love The Ignited Life—our free Substack newsletter created to fuel your growth between episodes. S2 Ep 1736S2 Ep1736: City Proclamation Honors Community Assistance and Life Liaison (CALL) program 2-12-26
In January 2021, City Council approved the contract to launch the Community Assistance and Life Liaison (CALL) program pilot. CALL will improve the response to mental illness, poverty, and addiction, providing assistance while reducing criminalization and stigma. Many of the calls for service the Police Department is asked to respond to during a normal day are better addressed by a human services professional. Through CALL, emergency dispatchers will send social workers to certain calls for service including mental health crisis, suicide intervention, truancy, homeless complaints, and neighborhood disputes.CALL goals: Reduce police involvement in non-criminal and non-violent calls for service. Reduce repeat calls for service to police from the same person by providing support and longer-term service connections. Provide a more compassionate approach to quality-of-life issues. Increase the amount of time our sworn officers can focus on keeping our City safe. Gulf Coast JFCS in partnership with St. Petersburg Police Department will lead a team of clinical staff and community navigators who are dispatched to non-violent, non-criminal calls to provide a therapeutic, wrap-around response. #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete

S2 Ep 1733S2 Ep1733: ECKERD COLLEGE NEWS Maddie Merrick w/Dr. Erin Rickman, HERP Laboratory
In this episode of Eckerd College News, WECX's Maddie Merrick interviews Dr. Erin Rickman as part of her series on animal research. Eckerd's newest research lab, the Anglo-American Reptile Research Lab, was created four months ago by Erin Rickman, assistant professor of animal studies. This is Rickman’s first year teaching at Eckerd, having moved to the United States from Lancing, England last September and they are currently studying ten crested geckos. 🎤The lab’s main goal is to understand the cognitive development of reptiles. “Reptile welfare is so far behind anything else, it’s basically nonexistent,” said Rickman. Although many own reptiles, the study of reptiles only emerged 30-40 years ago, resulting in a lack of understanding in the inner workings of reptiles’ brains. Read The Triton article for more on the Rickman.🎤The Herpetological Environments and Research in Practice (HERP) Laboratory at Eckerd College looks to improve the welfare of captive herptiles and they focus on how the captive environment can influence animal behavior and cognition. S2 Ep 1714S2 Ep1714: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Steven Sloman on The Cost of Conviction: Deepest Values, Taboo Tradeoffs and Better Thinking
The Cost of Conviction: Deepest Values, Taboo Tradeoffs and Better Thinking(2/16/2026) We like to believe we make decisions by weighing evidence, considering outcomes, and thinking things through. But in reality, most of our choices are guided by something far more powerful and far less examined: our sacred values. In this episode of Passion Struck, John R. Miles interviews Steven Sloman, one of the world’s leading cognitive scientists and the author of The Cost of Conviction, to explore how our deepest moral commitments shape the way we think, argue, vote, and lead. Steven explains why relying too heavily on sacred values can quietly override consequences, shut down reasoning, and fuel the kind of polarization we see everywhere today. Drawing on decades of research in decision-making, psychology, and collective cognition, this conversation challenges the assumption that moral certainty equates with moral clarity. Instead, Steven shows how humility, tradeoff thinking, and shared reasoning are essential if we want better decisions and a less divided society. Our Deeply Held Sacred Values, and How Decisions Really Get MadeSteven Sloman introduces a powerful distinction between two ways humans make decisions. One approach focuses on consequences and outcomes. The other relies on moral absolutes that frame actions as simply right or wrong. While both are necessary, problems arise when these deepest values dominate situations that require nuance, tradeoffs, and long-term thinking. When these deepest values take over, decision-making feels easier and more emotionally satisfying. But that ease often comes at the cost of understanding, empathy, and flexibility. This is where good intentions can quietly lead us astray.Taboo Tradeoffs and Why Moral Absolutes Break DownOne of the most striking parts of this conversation is Steven’s explanation of taboo tradeoffs. These occur when people refuse to exchange moral convictions for any material or practical benefit, even when circumstances demand difficult choices. Steven also introduces tragic tradeoffs, moments when two deepest values collide, and no option preserves moral purity. These moments reveal why absolute thinking struggles in a complex world and why mature decision making requires accepting loss, ambiguity, and responsibility.ABOUT PASSION STRUCK In Passion Struck, John R. Saumitra shares his personal connection as one of the original mural artists, making the moment especially meaningful.Throughout the conversation, the group reflects on how visibility, public space, and transportation choices all shape a sense of belonging—and how small, creative changes can make St. Pete easier to navigate without a car and more joyful for everyone.Links & Contact City of St. Petersburg: https://www.stpete.org Connect Pinellas: https://www.connectpinellas.org Nathan Bruemmer: [email protected] #CarFreeStPete #StPetePride #BikeStPete #LGBTQCommunity

S2 Ep 1699S2 Ep1699: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE Black History Month - The Weekly Challenger
In this episode of HISTORICALLY ST. PETE, Rui Farias - the executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History, highlights another St. Pete leader and organization in our African American community during Black History Month. Rui welcomes Irene Johnson-Pridgen to studio to talk about her brother, Cleveland Johnson Jr., the founder of The Weekly Challenger in St. Petersburg, today still a comprehensive source of African American news in all of Tampa Bay. Learn more all year round at SPMOH's Civil Rights trolley tour events and exhibits, and on their social media.👉In 1967, The Weekly Challenger dcoumented the history of St. Petersburg's African American community. Founded by community advocate Cleveland Johnson Jr., it provided fair and affirming coverage of Black life in Pinellas County . It thrived as a folksy paper that published news that the larger daily papers ignored. The late publisher Cleveland Johnson, a native of Thomasville, Ga., started working as a salesman in the early 1950s for the Weekly Advertiser owned by M.C. Fountain. After years of working under Fountain, Johnson acquired the business in 1967, changed the name and rebranded it as a weekly newspaper catering to African-American news in the Tampa Bay area.👉During the first two decades of ownership, Johnson expanded the paper from just a few pages to 32, eight of them in color, seven with full-page advertisements. The paper closely followed events related to school desegregation, and kept up with national corporations, noting which ones would hire black employees. When Johnson died in 2001 at the age of 73, obituaries were published in newspapers as far away as Honolulu, Hawaii.👉After his death his widow, Ethel Johnson, stepped in as publisher. Now, more than a decade later, The Weekly Challenger is still the voice of the black community in Pinellas County, and after a cavalcade of general managers, Johnson’s youngest daughter, Lyn Johnson, has taken over as publisher. Since her short time at the helm, becoming manager in February of 2012, Johnson has brought readership up by focusing strictly on community news, adding national news only to the website.#historicallystepete #ruifarias #stpetersburgmuseumofhistory #spmoh #civilrightsmovement #africanamericanstpete #theweeklychallenger #Clevelandjohnsonjr. #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete
