(3/23/2026) Lunchtime Conversation host Nanette Wiser enjoys the TBCC newsletter "The Beach Brief" from Charlie Justice, President/CEO Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBCC), so we asked him to come in monthly to give us an update on how the beaches are doing (preventing oil drilling, renourishment, infrastructure and more) and preview upcoming events (May Annual Tourism Luncheon at The Tradewinds Island Resort). From lobbying for our County & Beaches in Tallahasee, supporting new and existing businesses with networking, ambassador and leadership program, hurricane recovery support and more, Justice and his team have their finger on the pulse of the beaches.ABOUT JUSTICE In January 2025, the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBBC) welcomed Charlie Justice as the board’s new CEO, replacing the dedicated and amazing Robin Miller who moved to a new job out of state. Justice has experience with state and local governments. For the past 12 years, he worked as a Pinellas County Commissioner representing District 3. In the early 2000s, Justice represented the 53rd District in the Florida House of Representatives for six years. Later, he became a state senator from the 16th district for four years.ABOUT THE CHAMBER The Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce, also known as the Gulf Beaches Chamber, is one of the largest chambers in the Tampa Bay area. They primarily serve all of the gulf beach communities in Pinellas County, from Sand Key to Tierra Verde. Every day they strive to connect members, educate our members, and advocate for our members. Originally established in 1958 as the St. Pete Beach Chamber of Commerce. Then, in 1989, multiple chambers along the beaches decided to condense into one, forming the Gulf Beaches of Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. Eight years later in 1997, the decision was made to shorten the name to the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber.UPCOMING EVENTS#charliejustice #thebeachbrief #tasteofthebeaches #tampabaychamberofcommerce #tbcc #gulfbeaches #gulfbeachesstrong #nanettewiser #pinellascounty #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1854S2 Ep1854: ARTS ALIVE St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung with Mike Hazlett, Green Light Cinema-Lounge-Kitchen

Mike Hazlett is today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast. As the owner and operator of St. Petersburg’s independent movie theater, Green Light Cinema, he’s been able to monitor changes in the film exhibition business (hint: streaming has taken a major bite out of movie theater operations), along with changes in the city’s movie-watching routines and habits. 🎤Yes, many people still enjoy sitting in a dark room in front of a big screen, especially when it’s a small, critically-acclaimed film that the big multiplex chains don’t care about. Those things are on Mike Hazlett’s mind. As well as the unexpected success of his latest venture, which debuted last December. Green Light Kitchen and Lounge, a 3,500-square-foot space adjacent to the theater, has become a runaway hit. Hazlett, it seems, has found an entertainment sweet spot, by providing food, drinks and live music (along with the occasional comedy or theater performance) before or after a film screening.🎤He also discusses the benefits of partnering with other arts organizations to create events to attract a wide range of visitors, and the importance of paying attention to what people are saying, and asking for. AND how he could not have predicted any of this when he and his wife, fresh out of Boston, decided to open a movie house in downtown St. Petersburg in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event will take place from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the new facility located at 3151 73rd Street North, St. Petersburg, FL, 33710. Parc invites family, friends, partners and the public to join the celebratory ribbon-cutting and mark this milestone that underscores Parc’s commitment to providing comprehensive services and support for children and families.“Seventy-three years ago, ten families refused to accept limitations for their children,” said Michelle Detweiler, president and CEO of Parc. “Since that time, Parc has been advocating for children with disabilities to grow, learn and thrive in an inclusive, caring environment. The opening of the Tom & Mary James Children’s Services Center advances our mission to ensure children with developmental disabilities receive the early intervention and support they need to grow, learn and develop to their fullest potential while strengthening the families who care for them.”Serving children from two months to five years of age, the Tom & Mary James Children’s Services Center will provide a dedicated, purpose-built home for Parc’s existing preschool and early intervention programs including physical, speech and occupational therapies, along with transportation, meals and supportive care. The Center will house two community-based resources: Early Intervention Services and the Caregiver Relief Program. The Early Intervention Services program is an outreach model in which specialists work one-on-one with children in their natural environment to prepare them for kindergarten. The Caregiver Relief Program provides up to 20 hours per month of respite care for families with children up to age 21, helping prevent child abuse and caregiver burnout. Dedicated to excellence, the Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to enhance cognitive and emotional development. The facility is named in honor of Tom and Mary James, local philanthropists and supporters of Parc for more than 50 years, who made a $2 million donation, which helped ignite the $10 million Raise the Roof capital campaign. To date, Parc has raised over $8.1 million for this project.“People should know that, despite the size of the community we’re in, we have a very good place for people with special needs, which you can’t find everywhere,” said Tom James. “I’ve known the people with Parc for a very long time. The fact is, they have demonstrated time and time again that they’ll bend over backwards to help all the kids and adults who need services. I speak from experience, knowing some of the people who live there. I’m proud we are associated with Parc Center for Disabilities.” To learn more about Parc Center for Disabilities, visit www.parc-fl.org.For more on Parc’s services for children and families, explore www.parc-fl.org/programs/childrens-services.###About Parc Center for DisabilitiesParc Center for Disabilities is a nonprofit organization that has been serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1953. S2 Ep 1850S2 Ep1850: Community, Leadership & Giving Back with Jeff Baker

Karen Carmichael sits down with Jeff Baker, Florida Government and Community Relations Manager at Duke Energy, for a thoughtful conversation about what it really means to serve a community—both in times of crisis and in everyday life.Jeff’s role, as he explains, extends far beyond energy infrastructure. For more than a decade, he has immersed himself in organizations across the Tampa Bay region, driven not by obligation, but by curiosity. That curiosity, Jeff shares, is what first pulled him into nonprofit work. Serving on boards gave him a window into the challenges and successes of organizations making a real difference. Over time, that curiosity grew into a deep commitment to community engagement—something he now considers one of the most rewarding parts of his life.As the conversation unfolds, Jeff reflects on what makes a nonprofit board truly effective. It’s not just about credentials or experience—it’s about people who genuinely care about the mission and bring diverse perspectives to the table. Different ages, backgrounds, and viewpoints create stronger, more informed leadership, ultimately helping organizations better serve their communities. But nonprofit work isn’t without its challenges. Jeff recalls his experience with the Urban League, where an unexpected leadership loss forced the board into a difficult transition. The experience underscored the importance of succession planning and being prepared for the unexpected—lessons that resonate across the nonprofit sector. From a corporate perspective, Jeff explains how Duke Energy approaches community investment through the Duke Energy Foundation. Their focus centers on three key areas: strengthening local economies through workforce development, enhancing disaster preparedness and resiliency, and expanding opportunities for long-term community growth.A major part of that effort involves empowering employees to give back. Through programs like “Hours for Good” and donation matching, Duke Energy employees can directly support the causes they care about—turning volunteer hours into meaningful financial contributions for nonprofits.Jeff also points to the urgent needs facing the community today, particularly around affordability. Partnerships with organizations like Feeding Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg Free Clinic are helping address food insecurity and provide critical support to families struggling to make ends meet. One initiative that stands out to Jeff personally is Duke Energy’s partnership with St. Petersburg College. Together, they’ve developed a lineman training program that creates a direct pathway to stable, high-paying careers. Beyond workforce development, the program strengthens local retention—ensuring that talent trained in the community stays in the community. For nonprofit leaders and volunteers, Jeff offers practical advice shaped by years of experience: align with partners who share your mission, avoid duplicating services, and stay focused on what your organization does best. For those simply looking to get involved, he encourages finding a cause that truly resonates—because passion makes all the difference. He also highlights organizations like 100 Women Who Care and 100 Good Guys, which make it easy for people to learn about and support local nonprofits through simple, high-impact giving events. In the end, the conversation paints a clear picture: meaningful community impact doesn’t come from any one sector alone. It’s built through collaboration—between businesses, nonprofits, and individuals all working toward a common goal. Jeff Baker’s perspective offers both insight and inspiration, reminding us that getting involved, in whatever way we can, is where real change begins.🔗 Helpful Links Duke Energy Community: https://www.duke-energy.com/community Feeding Tampa Bay: https://feedingtampabay.org St. Pete Free Clinic: https://stpetersburgfreeclinic.org St. Petersburg College: https://www.spcollege.edu #CommunityImpact #NonprofitLeadership #DukeEnergy #TampaBayGives

S2 Ep 1849S2 Ep1849: FRUGAL FRIENDS Jen Smith & Jill Sirianni: How Marketing Manipulates You to Spend Money You Don't Have

In E566, Frugal Friends hosts Jen Smith & Jill Sirianni talk about "How Marketing Manipulates You to Spend Money You Don't Have." Social media made you buy that thing. And yes, it was on purpose. Today’s episode breaks down exactly how marketing psychology manipulates you and how companies use emotion, identity, and guilt to encourage you to buy things you don’t need with money you don’t have.Parasocial Intimacy Among the emotional strategies marketers use, Jen highlights parasocial intimacy. This occurs when influencers share highly emotional or “vulnerable” experiences like crying on camera, discussing breakups, burnout, or financial struggles to evoke empathy, sadness, or grief, and foster a sense of personal connection. Jill notes that because this connection feels authentic, audiences are naturally drawn in and more inclined to engage or make purchases.Authority Through Complexity When influencers cater to a specific niche, they often come across as professional, credible, and trustworthy. However, some creators use overly complex explanations or jargon especially in finance, wellness, or entrepreneurship to confuse their audience. This confusion can build misplaced trust, creating a sense of dependence on the influencer, which can eventually lead followers to make purchases they might not have considered otherwise.False Empowerment If you’ve ever come across posts that tell you directly, “You deserve this” or “Invest in yourself,” it’s worth taking a closer look at the intention behind them. While these messages may feel motivating, they can also be a subtle marketing strategy designed to make you. Over time, this can blur the line between financial choices and emotional fulfillment.Your most recent “oh no, I’m being influenced” momentFor Jen, it’s the running gears that she uses for when she’s running. While for Jill, its the iconic dermaplaning razor that has never seen the light of the day (never been used. ever.)**RadioStPete is delighted to rebroadcast curated podcasts of FRUGAL FRIENDS with Jen Smith & Jill Sirianni. S2 Ep 1848S2 Ep1848: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Leslie John on The Science of Opening Up

The Science of Opening Up: Why Under Sharing Is More Costly Than Oversharing with Leslie JohnWhat if the real reason you regret conversations is not because you said too much, but because you said too little? In this episode, John R. Miles explore the science of opening up with Leslie John, a leading behavioral scientist at Harvard Business School. Her research reveals that we fixate on the risks of oversharing while overlooking the hidden cost of under sharing. From missed opportunities in love to diminished trust at work, silence carries consequences that are often invisible but deeply impactful. Through powerful stories, including the reunion of John and Grace after twenty years apart, and rigorous research on self-disclosure, stress, and psychological safety, Leslie shows how revealing wisely strengthens connection, influence, and well-being.The TLI Problem: Why Silence Is Not NeutralWe tend to evaluate conversations through the lens of embarrassment. The fear of a disclosure hangover makes us cautious. Yet Leslie’s work demonstrates that silence creates its own risks. Too Little Information, or TLI, leads to missed opportunities for intimacy, trust, and growth. Research on regret consistently shows that in the long run we regret what we did not say far more than what we did. These missed moments accumulate quietly. A reassurance never voiced. A frustration never named. A truth never shared. Over time, those omissions shape relationships and outcomes more than we realize. The Physics Of Connection: Social Risk And Mutual TrustSelf-disclosure works because it involves social risk. When you share something personal, you relinquish control and signal trust. That act invites trust in return. This mutual exchange forms the foundation of deep friendships, strong partnerships, and meaningful collaboration. Leslie explains that vulnerability is not about emotional dumping. It is about calibrated revealing. When done thoughtfully, it strengthens bonds and increases perceived authenticity. People feel closer to those who allow themselves to be known.Leadership And Psychological Safety At WorkIn professional environments, many people feel pressure to project confidence and composure. Leslie’s research shows that when leaders practice metered vulnerability, employees report higher trust and motivation. Naming emotions such as frustration in a meeting can unlock clarity and momentum. Psychological safety is strengthened when leaders go first. Eye contact, openness, and appropriate self-disclosure create an environment where others feel safe to contribute. Performance improves when people are not preoccupied with concealing their thoughts and feelings.Key Highlights from this Episode Why Too Little Information often causes more long-term regret than Too Much Information How the disclosure hangover skews our future communication decisions The science behind why vulnerability builds trust The physiological cost of suppressing emotions Why couples misread each other more than they realize How leaders can increase influence through measured openness The connection between self-disclosure and reduced loneliness Leslie John is the James E. Burke Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and a leading expert on self-disclosure and decision-making. Her award-winning research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Economist. A Canadian-born, professionally trained ballet dancer, she now lives in Boston with her husband and two sons. What Your Body Has Been Trying to Tell You | Breath, Movement & Recovery with Dr. Aissa McGuirlWhat if your exhaustion, pain, or restlessness isn’t something to fix, but something to listen to? In this episode of Work Is Third, Dawn Hunter sits down with Dr. Aissa McGuirl, physical therapist and author of Connect the Body Dots, for a grounded conversation about what our bodies are trying to tell us and why so many of us aren’t listening. Together, they explore how breath, movement, and recovery are foundational to nervous system regulation, sustainable energy, and long-term health. Dr. McGuirl shares why constant productivity keeps us stuck in survival mode, how body awareness can change the way we work and live, and what it really means to support your body instead of pushing through it. This episode is an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and rethink what “taking care of yourself” actually looks like in a culture that rewards burnout and productivity.📚 Guest Info connectthbodydots.com IG @dr.aissa_ YouTube connectthebodydots Book: Connect the Body Dots, connectthebodydots.com/thebookStay Connected with Dawn Hunter Visit The Dawn Lab.🔔 Dawn Hunter, JD, MPH is a speaker, trainer, and culture strategist who blends law, leadership, and wellbeing to create healthier, more human-centered workplaces.
