S2 Ep 1935S2 Ep1935: ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung: Roxanne Fay & Bonnie Agan in Ripcord @Off-Central
In this episode of ARTS ALIVE! St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung chats with cast members Roxanne Fay and Bonnie Agans, starring in playwright David Lindsay-Abaire’s Ripcord is the new show at the Off- Central in St. Petersburg. They’re both familiar to Tampa Bay theater fans; both have years of memorable performances on their resumes, from dramas to comedies. Ripcord, which runs through April 19 at the 43-seat black box theater, has elements of both genres. Although it’s officially a comedy, there are tears behind the laughter, and laughter behind the tears. It’s the sort of theatrical razor’s walk at which Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole, Good People, Kimberly Akimbo) is adept.Fay and Agan play Abby and Marilyn, respectively, roommates at a seniorliving facility. They’re different as chalk and cheese, as the old saying goes, and as their personalities clash, as they try to out-maneuver and one-upone another, they (and the audience) learn a few uncomfortable secrets.Ah, but getting there is the funhouse ride. Alongside a solid supportingcast, Fay and Agan turn Abby and Marilyn into flesh and blood, believable(and frequently hilarious) characters.#billdeyoung #artsalive #stpetecatalyst #ripcord #off-central #roxannefay #bonnieagan #theater #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

(4/6/2026) In this episode of One Place, Many Voices, host Nanette Wisesr chats with author Deb Carson about the history of the circus in Pinellas County and her book about her uncle Albert, one Ringling's most famous performers in advance of World Circus Day this month. Becoming FLO: A Mostly True Story by Deb Carson (edited by Nanette Wiser, cover art by Janet Nummi) Says Carson: It’s Baltimore, 1920. You’re 16. You have four adoring sisters and four disapproving brothers. You are the son of devout Orthodox Jewish immigrant parents who escaped Russian pogroms. Your murderously abusive father is repulsed by your artful interests. You’re harboring a big secret. And an even bigger desire. What would you do? Most Orthodox Jewish boys at the turn of the 20th century did not run away from home. Did ot join the circus. Did not find fame. And did not find herself. Flo did. From the shtetl to the Big Top, Flo’s true story inspires. Despite all odds, through sheer grit and the power of art, Flo’s escape from a father’s violence, a world of anti-Semitism and rampant Queer intolerance takes readers on a remarkable journey; and one that illuminates a path out for those who similarly struggle."Celebrate World Circus Day April 18 at the Ringling' Circus Museum in Sarasota.Come one, come all, and visit us at The Ringling as we join communities around the globe to celebrate the rich history and extraordinary artistry of the circus arts. I love to combine humor and old-fashioned “schtick” with music and theater. My cabarets allow me to go creatively crazy! My heroes are Bette Midler, Carol Burnett, Lucille O’Ball, Judy Garland and Liza Minelli. I was hired to sing the songs of Judy Garland in my first cabaret in NYC called LEGENDARY LADIES, and have been “bit” by the cabaret bug ever since. Spring Fever is a brand new uplifting show with songs pertaining to spring that has Broadway classics in jazz arrangements. There are some fun non-B’way tunes, too. Even though I have an amazing band, I’m going to play the piano and sing Kacey Musgraves, RAINBOW, and also do a solo on my ukulele. I like to have quiet intimate moments as well as silly schtick. I don’t wanna give away all my secrets, but the front few rows may wanna wear rain gear! I love to surprise my audiences… so I’ll have guest artists pop up and start playing, or use funny props - like a walker when I perform the song BIG SPENDER (with choreography of course) in my Torch cabaret. This show has a guest artist banjo player for RAINBOW CONNECTION, and another hottie female sax player that just appears on stage wearing feathers for AIN’T NOBODY HERE BUT US CHICKENS. I also have guest artist kids who made posters that correspond to the lyrics of THE BIRDS AND THE BEES. They’ll flash their artwork as I sing. (It’s adorable! It’s a holdover from when I used to teach elementary school.) Lastly - this show has some gorgeous music: Barbra Streisand’s version of HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA, OVER THE RAINBOW, and I’ll sing Blossom Dearie’s version (in French) of IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING. I love to sing in French and Spanish even though I’m not conversational anymore. Certain songs lend themselves to other languages."#musicscene #gulfportseniorfoundation #laurieLoyst #springfever #catherinehickmantheater #nanettewiser #gooddeeds #fundraiser #gulfport #jazz #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1912S2 Ep1912: PASSION STRUCK John R. Miles: Arthur Brooks "How To Find Meaning In Your Life"
Arthur Brooks: How to Find The Meaning of Your Life in an Age of Emptiness In this episode of Passion Struck, John R. Miles talks with Arthur Brooks. This is an invitation to step out of the noise, to reconsider what truly matters, and to begin reconnecting with a life that feels lived rather than simulated. We live in a time where everything appears to be working, where opportunity is abundant, technology is accelerating, and success has never been more accessible, yet beneath that surface, more and more people are quietly asking themselves a question they can’t quite escape: What is the meaning of your life when everything looks right, but something inside still feels unresolved? In this deeply revealing conversation, I sit down with Arthur C. Brooks to explore what is really happening beneath the rise in anxiety, depression, and disconnection, and what unfolds is not simply a discussion about mental health, but a much deeper inquiry into how modern life itself is reshaping our ability to experience meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. Arthur does not approach this as an abstract philosophical problem, but as something he has observed again and again in real conversations with people who feel successful on the outside and lost on the inside, and what he uncovers is that meaning has not disappeared from our lives, but our ways of living have made it increasingly difficult to perceive, access, and sustain.Explore More: The Ignited Life Newsletter If today’s episode sparked something in you, you’ll love The Ignited Life—our free Substack newsletter created to fuel your growth between episodes. In this episode of ARTS ALIVE, Bill DeYoung talks to one of the stars of American's Stage's Into The Woods.Ryan Joustra is not a real witch – as far as we know – but she’s playing one onstage through April 26 at Demens Landing Park. It’s there you’ll find the American Stage production of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical Into the Woods. Fairy tales come to life in this whimsical and humorous tale, and as might be expected, there’s a witch at the center of the goings-on. The Witch, as she’s known, makes trouble for the Baker and His Wife, Rapunzel, Jack (of beanstalk fame) and the others. Is she, to borrow from The Wizard of Oz, a good witch or a bad witch? In today’s Arts Alive! interview, Joustra provides her thoughts on the matter. She also discusses the show’s impressively large cast, and how the backstage designers and crew have made their madcap comings and goings appear seamless (hint: The word is teamwork). The St. Petersburg native recaps her impressive resume (she majored in Vocal Performance and Professional Music at Berklee College of Music), her work in American Stage’s Tales By Twilight series, and her longtime membership in the Dirty John’s comedy troupe.
